Britain accused of ‘hostile’ betrayal over settlements Israel blames UK for leading role in ‘shameful’ United Nations vote

Israel has accused Britain of being a prime mover in pushing for the United Nation’s anti-settlements resolution, after Jerusalem curbed contacts with a dozen states in a bitter diplomatic row provoked by the controversial vote, writes Justin Cohen. Jewish community leaders condemned the UK’s decision to join 13 other members of the United Nations Security Council in supporting the motion, which passed in New York last Friday after America broke with tradition and decided to abstain rather than veto the condemnatory text. Benjamin Netanyahu [pictured] originally accused the White House of initiating the move and of a “shameful anti-Israel ambush at the UN”, while the envoys of 12 countries who backed the motion were summoned. But over the past 24 hours, the Israelis

have sought to place the UK’s own role under the microscope. Haaretz reported claims by Israel that British diplomats worked secretly with the Palestinians on the wording of the resolution before it was presented by Egypt, who later withdrew it. It also revealed allegations that Britain was among those lobbying New Zealand to bring it back to the table. “The UK and Israel disagree on the settlements issue, but this resolution was extremely harmful to both Israel and Continued on page 2

News / United Nations vote: the aftermath

Israeli anger focused on both US and Britain

Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama during their most recent meeting in New York in September

Continued from page 1 the cause of peace in ways that have nothing to do with settlements,” an Israeli official told The Telegraph. “We’re disappointed that a friend and ally such as the UK would take a leading role in formulating and promoting this hostile resolution.” In response to the reports, a foreign office spokesman said: “The UNSC resolution was proposed and drafted by the Egyptian delegation, which the UK engaged with as a P5 member and as we do with all Security Council texts.” Motion 2332 branded settlements a “flagrant violation of international law” that reduce chances for a two-state solution. Netanyahu rejects such claims, blaming the failure of peace efforts on Palestinian refusal to recognise Israel’s Jewish identity. Welcomed by the Palestinians, the resolution, while mostly symbolic, could hinder Israel’s negotiating position in future

peace talks. The UK has long criticised settlement building, with Theresa May insisting only two weeks ago continued building is “unacceptable. It must stop”. Amid the diplomatic fallout, Jerusalem was forced to deny that a planned meeting between Netanyahu and Theresa May – a firm friend of Israel – at the World Economic Forum had been cancelled. No talks had been scheduled, they said. Last week, Yachad wrote to Boris Johnson urging the UK to support the motion. But Jonathan Arkush, President of the Board of Deputies, said: “I am deeply disappointed that the UK Government failed to take the honourable course of exercising its power to veto a biased and unbalanced resolution.” The Israeli leader insisted Israel would not abide by its terms and he said he had spoken with US leaders,

both Democrats and Republicans, who vowed to fight the move, including he said, from Israel’s “friend” in the incoming administration, the president-elect. “The decision taken at the UN yesterday was part of the swan song of the old world biased against Israel,” Netanyahu said. “We are entering a new era and as President-elect Trump said, this is going to happen much quicker than people think. In this new era there is a high price for those trying to harm Israel,” he said. Trump, for his part, took to Twitter to say Israel was being treated with “disdain and disrespect”. In the UK, Yachad said it believed the UK had acted in Israel’s “best long-term interests, saying the vote presents an “historic opportunity to put resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict back at the top of the international agenda”. Conservative Friends of Isra-

ISRAEL STUNG BY CRITICISM FROM ITS CLOSEST ALLIES

Variously described as unbalanced, unfair and a humiliating blow by Israeli politicians past and present, UN Security Council Resolution 2334 passed with 14 votes in favour and an American abstention. Yet beyond the rumours and accusations of British complicity and American collusion over the text’s wording lies the necessity of focusing on the resolution’s significance. Israel’s criticisms are based around three arguments. The resolution is silent or muted regarding Israeli concerns, such as Palestinian terrorism and incitement. It indulges Palestinian intransigence by consolidating the belief that national goals can be achieved without negotiated compromises. And in failing to distinguish between Israeli construction over the former armistice line, the resolution erodes previous Israeli-Palestinian (and Israeli-American) understandings over territorial swaps, thus making future negotiations harder. As former head of Military Intelligence Amos Yadlin wrote: “The approach underlying Resolution 2334, whereby the Western Wall is tantamount to the Yitzhar settlement… eliminates any chances of negotiations toward a twostate arrangement.” However, it is disingenuous to focus

on external perfidy while ignoring how Israel’s own policies facilitated the resolution’s passage. Since 2011, when the US vetoed a similar draft resolution, Obama has lost his belief in the Netanyahu government’s commitment to a two state solution. Legal measures currently being considered by the Knesset – against the advice of the Attorney General – to regulate and legalise settlement homes and outposts built on private Palestinian land may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Indeed, Netanyahu warned of this exact scenario if the bill were to pass, although he ultimately supported it in order to maintain his coalition. In the longer term, the Palestinian ‘victory’ lends credence to its ‘internationalisation’ strategy, and so-called ‘lawfare’ against Israel in international agencies may increase. One open question relates to domestic issues, where Netanyahu is positioning himself as protector of Israel’s national dignity against a deeply hostile world. Will this approach be strengthened in light of the international community’s apparent hostility? Or, stung by criticism from its closest allies over settlements, might the public become convinced of the centre-left’s argument that even if not the obstacle to peace, Israel’s policies in outlying areas of the West Bank, are ultimately damaging to the country’s national security?

el’s Parliamentary Chairman Sir Eric Pickles MP and Honorary President Lord Polak said: “CFI is disappointed by the UK’s decision to support the UN Security Council Resolution, which legitimises the Palestinian Authority’s attempts to internationalise the issue and avoid the necessary direct peace talks. In addition, the Resolution will embolden the hardline BDS movement and the ramifications for Jerusalem and Judaism’s holiest site – the Western Wall – are seriously

troubling. CFI will be writing to the prime minister and seeking an urgent meeting with the foreign secretary.” Paul Charney, chairman of the Zionist Federation, said: “Yet again the UN has proved it is a bias, onesided body, hell bent on criticising Israel above all other nations of the world. This resolution is not designed to broach any form of ‘legitimate criticism’ of Israel and is clearly just another stick with which to bash the only democracy in the Middle East.”

DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, BICOM

The founder of the grassroots group that helped propel Jeremy Corbyn to the Labour leadership has condemned anti-Israel Jews who blame the row over anti-Semitism on “Zionists” – as he insisted he “can’t see any good reason” why it’s taken so long to determine Ken Livingstone’s fate in the party, writes Justin Cohen. Momentum chief Jon Lansman was speaking to Jewish News after taking part in two panels on his first visit to Limmud, setting out why Jews should support Labour under Corbyn.

While he acknowledged there was a problem of anti-Semitism in the party, he claimed the row had been “exaggerated” and there was a “gap between perception and reality”. But he added: “I think the suggestion that the row about anti-Semitism has been organised by Zionists is completely wrong. Jewish anti-Zionists are entitled to their point of view about Zionism but are not helping Palestinian or themselves in claiming the row is part of a Zionist conspiracy. It is not. To the extent that those things have been

exaggerated, which I think they have been, it is by people who are hostile to the Labour Party.” The report from Shami Chakrabarti was “a start” but “there’s more to do”, he insisted. “Jeremy’s got to show he understands the need for it and I think he’s doing that.” But he added: “One of the things that disappoints me is that the Chakrabarti report made a number of recommendations to improve the procedures – to make them more transparent, make sure they abide by the principles of natural

justice – but those haven’t been properly implemented yet.” Lansman condemned Livingstone when he was suspended in April after claiming Hitler supported Zionism “before he went mad” – but it is not

known when his long-term fate will be decided. Lansman said: “I don’t know why it’s taking so long. I can’t see any particularly good reason for it” but he “trusts” the final judgement will confirm the end of the former London mayor’s political career. On a personal level, he is “concerned and sorry” about revelations about anti-Semitism. “I take cases of anti-Semitism extremely seriously, as does Labour and Jeremy. It was hard for a party that values its history of fighting all racism to see it include people with anti-Semitic attitudes.” He also expressed hope that relations between the party and the Jewish community can be repaired. “In a world where the far right is on the rise in the US and Europe, there are many reasons for hoping we will resolve the strains in the relationship.”

Kerry warns: Israeli democracy at stake’

‘Disappointment’ over school bids The team behind a proposed new modern Orthodox school, Kavanah College, has expressed “understandable disappointment” that their bid to open a free five-form entry secondary school on the seam of north west Barnet, and south Hertfordshire has been turned down by the Department of Education. But an optimistic statement from the Kavanah group says that “the feedback” to their application “was on the whole very positive”, and that they are now planning a revised submission for the next round of applications, The Kavanah team said: “The Department for Education has acknowledged our strengths, namely our high calibre pre-opening team who have a good range of expertise. “We are delighted that Dame Helen Hyde and Marilyn Nathan, our exceptional joint educational leads, will be continuing to work with

John Kerry responding to Israel’s anger over last week’s United Nations vote on settlements

US secretary of state John Kerry has defended the Obama administration’s decision to allow the UN Security Council to declare Israeli settlements illegal – and warned that Israel’s very future as a democracy is at stake. Kerry, responding to Israel’s fury over the US abstention of the United Nations vote, questioned Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s true commitment to Palestinian statehood, which has formed the basis for all serious peace talks for years. Though Netanyahu said he believes in the two-state solution, Kerry said that under his leadership, Israel’s government is “the most right-wing in Israel’s history”. Kerry said in a farewell speech: “If the choice is one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic, it cannot be both – and it won’t ever really be at peace.” The speech is a comprehensive airing of grievances that have built up in the Obama administration over eight years but were rarely, until this month, discussed publicly. It marks the latest escalation in a vicious row between the US and Israel which has erupted in the last days of Barack Obama’s administration. The extraordinary display of discord between allies – with US and Israeli officials openly disparaging

each other – has also pitted Obama against presidentelect Donald Trump, who has firmly taken the side of Netanyahu. Israel’s government was enraged after the US abstained from voting on the UN Security Council resolution last week that called Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem a violation of international law. Netanyahu accused the US of colluding with the Palestinians and helping draft the resolution. The US has vehemently denied those charges. Kerry insisted the US “did not draft or originate” the resolution, introduce by Egypt and later by a handful of other nations. “The United States did in fact vote in accordance with our values, just as previous administrations have done,” Kerry said at the state department on Wednesday. “The vote in the United Nations was about preserving the two-state solution. That’s what we were standing up for.” For years, Obama has been deeply frustrated by the continuing growth of Israeli settlements despite his pleas to Netanyahu to rein them in. Israel’s government argues previous settlement freezes have failed to spur progress toward a peace deal and that stopping or removing them must not be a precondition for future talks.

Point-by-point, Kerry tried to rebut the arguments Israel has used to defend the settlements, declaring that “the settler agenda is defining the future of Israel”. He warned that Israelis at risk of a permanent occupation of Palestinian territory, drawing a pointed reference to America’s own history of racial segregation. “Separate and unequal is what you would have, and nobody can explain how that works,” Kerry said. He reiterated that the Obama administration’s commitment to Israel is as strong as that of previous presidents, but he also noted that previous American administrations had also abstained on certain resolutions critical of Israel. He emphasised the record levels of military assistance the US has provided Israel under Obama, codified by a 10-year aid deal recently struck worth 38 billion dollars (£31 billion). “No American administration has done more for Israel’s security than Barack Obama’s,” Kerry said. Netanyahu’s office quickly denounced Kerry’s speech, saying it was “skewed against Israel” and “obsessively” focused on Israeli settlements. The prime minister’s spokesman added that the speech “barely touched on the root of the conflict – Palestinian opposition to a Jewish state in any boundaries”.

Jeremy Corbyn has described the Chanukah story as the “first national liberation struggle” in a message to mark the festival. He added: “A small band of Jews inspired by their history of rebelling against slavery held out against an empire, defending their people and traditions against oppression.”

us on this application”. They were determined to continue with a renewed bid, the team said, particularly in response to the “overwhelming support from parents, politicians and the wider community” The planned school, backed by the United Synagogue and the Chief Rabbi’s Office, had a platform of inclusion as part of its mission statement. The team said that Kavanah would have “a distinct Jewish ethos, but one that is built on inclusion…students will not be taught within a bubble of the school environment. We want to show them the world beyond the walls. to help them to understand their place within it, and the impact they can have on it.” Kavanah’s rejection comes after another proposed Jewish school, Barkai, was turned down by the Department of Education for apparently having too much Jewish focus within its curriculum. • Editorial comment, page 11

Limmud Conference 2016

Labour’s often-fractious relations with the Jewish community were spotlighted in two packed sessions at this year’s Limmud conference writes Debbie Ferrer. And the star of the show, according to social-media reports, was Labour’s former parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green, Sarah Sackman. In passionate and well-received remarks, the 32-year-old barrister acknowledged that it had been a difficult time to be a member of the Labour Party. She admitted that she had been asked repeatedly how she, as a Jewish woman, could remain involved with the organisation. But Sackman, who is vice-chair of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), urged her audience: “Shape events or be shaped by them. Don’t mourn – organise.” She said there were battles in which the Jewish community needed to get involved, not least in combating “the rise in the suspicion of the other – and we know where that ends”. THE MOOD AT LIMMUD

DANIEL EISENBERG LONDON

Sackman was speaking on a panel which included Jon Lansman, the Jewish founder of Momentum, the pro-Jeremy Corbyn pressure group. Lansman, treading a difficult line, acknowledged there was anti-Semitism within the Labour Party but also claimed the bulk of it pre-dated the election of Jeremy Corbyn as party leader, and that today, although it was “real”, it was “exaggerated”. He criticised both Tories and non-Jews on the right of the Labour Party, who he accused of spinning anti-Semitism into a bigger issue than he believed it was. But he drew an incredulous response from some members of the audience when he praised the Chakrabarti Report into Antisemitism as “a good start”. Fellow panellists such as Luke Akehurst, director of We Believe in Israel, and the chair of JLM, Jeremy Newmark, did not agree. Akehurst said: “I was very disappointed by Chakrabarti. I thought she understood what the community’s concerns were.” She had

But – to loud applause – Newmark added: “Jeremy Corbyn needs to stand up and take responsibility.

Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner pictured with Deborah Lipstadt at Limmud

A ground-breaking project called Real Conversations, which aims to change the way in which Jews and Muslims view each other, was unveiled at Limmud by Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, senior rabbi of the Reform Movement, writes Jenni Frazer. As Alex Fenton, Janner-Klausner’s director of public affairs, explained, at the core of the proposed scheme, to be run in Leeds and Bradford next spring in conjunction with the Islamic Society of Britain, will be “a way of having difficult conversations”.

He added: Too often, interfaith dialogue focuses on what Jews and Muslims have in common, such as shechita and halal, and avoids talking about Israel/Palestine. We think we need to have those conversations right from the start.” The project envisages two trained facilitators, one a Jew and one a Muslim, running workshops for school students aged around 13 to 14. The workshops will be held for “single identity groups”, which is to say a group of

Jewish students and a separate group of Muslim students. In that way, Fenton said, people would feel themselves free to discuss difficult issues. The idea was launched at a Limmud session entitled This is not dialogue, this is not interfaith. What it was hoped to be, said Janner-Klausner, was “a series of short, sharp interventions”. Its inspiration, she added, had been the outpouring of anti-Semitism on social media during the 2014 Gaza war, and her realisation that it was simply not going to be possible, given the difference in the size of the two communities, for every Jew to meet a Muslim, or vice versa, in order to change perceptions. Fenton emphasised that the intention was not to change people’s political narrative “but to improve relations between Jews and Muslims in the UK”. While the programme is being piloted in Leeds and Bradford, it could be rolled out nationally if it is successful. Janner-Klausner told Jewish News: “This will change how Jews and Muslims view each other, view themselves and view our role as British citizens. “Real Conversations can be the template for unlocking fortress thinking. I strongly believe that well-facilitated, difficult conversations enable toxins to come out, helping us to build immunity for a healthier, more robust Britain”.

THE MOOD AT LIMMUD

ANNIKA HERNROTH ROTHSTEIN LIMMUDNIK

Before I even get to Birmingham and Limmud, I see a Facebook post from a friend: “Something has happened to Limmud. There are more Conservatives here every year.” Knowing him, that statement is one of outrage rather than contentment. Without knowing his personal experience, I can assume his upset stems from a change in programming that has taken place over the past years, where the previously solidly-liberal conference has opened its doors to voices from the political and religious right, creating pockets of what may seem like foreign thoughts to an otherwise homogenous organisation. As I’ve now been here for a couple of days, for my third Limmud in England and seventh in total, I can say this change has had a ripple effect, and the mood and even culture of Limmud has undergone many changes for the better. I was one of those few conservative voices a few years ago, and felt then as if I had walked into enemy territory. The idea was perhaps novel for parties, the mixing and debating – often wildly contrarian views – and bringing the “other” into what had already been so

firmly and successfully moulded and established. It has been three years since I was first at Limmud England, and what was a rarity is now, if not common, at least a pattern taking form – several sessions each day, teaching from a politically conservative or religiously orthodox perspective, and on the panels now a true diversity of opinion. Plainly speaking – I now feel welcome at Limmud, and truly part of the learning and teaching experience, and that speaks to the strength of the participants and to the concept of Limmud itself, having opened its doors and welcomed the sometimes uncomfortable and unexpected. Most unexpected, perhaps, has been the reaction from the audience, as they’ve come up to me after the sessions or greeted me in the halls. Not, as I perhaps had expected, with criticism and opposition but more often than not with an affirming and welcoming tone. This may be a sign of the times, of society turning toward a more conservative viewpoint as we all experience a global upheaval, or it could be these meetings are so rarely tested that any theory of animosity is and remains just that. Either way, my third Limmud in England has been a surprisingly hopeful experience.

Co-ordinators from the group recruited social media and began organising a search. When he replied , aid services were contacted and Yoav identified. Gavriel Ost, CEO of Shomrim NW London said: “Yoav was found safe and well and is now being cared for.”

School decision has serious implications

So faith-based schools are a threat to British society. That appears to be the message from the secretary of state after both applications to open a new Jewish free school in north London were rejected, because time for faith education would be “disproportionate” compared to other subjects. The implications of last week’s decisions on the proposed Barkai College and Kavanagh College secondaries will be of concern to established Jewish schools around the country – especially those consistently scoring high marks in national league tables across a broad spectrum of subjects. The unquestionable all-round success of Jewish and other faith schools adds up to a compelling case for this important sector of our education system. Religion can help, not hinder, educational success. That’s a lesson the Department for Education would be wise to learn.

frame watching television. He was weak and could not stand to greet us. He was barely audible. He never feared death. He lived his early life pained by his sexuality and physically repulsed by his body. He was crippled by depression during those years. But he made a point of not fearing physical pain or his own mortality. Rabbi Lionel Blue won recognition for his words, but his actions were just as remarkable. If anyone wants a marker of how brave his decision to come out was, do not look alone to what the legions of listeners, LGBT campaigners and rabbis said responding to his death. Momentarily consider what was not said, and in particular the Chief Rabbi’s response to Lionel’s death this week: shameless, shameful, radio silence. In a homophobic community, Lionel decided to show the world the person he was. And the world loved him for it. Gabriel Pogrund By email

THE FANATICS WHO ABUSE THE DECENCY OF THE FREE WORLD I heartily endorse Mr Howard’s letter entitled ‘The wrong direction’ [Jewish News, 22 December]. In no way do I believe the majority of refugees seeking sanctuary in the UK and other European countries are actual or potential terrorists. Rather, they are prosaic people who want a measure of democracy and the opportunity to make a good living financially. Unfortunately, there are many fanatics who abuse the decency of the free world. And even more unfortunately, there are politicians from all sides of the spectrum who unknowingly play straight into the hands of these fanatics. Not all of these politicians are of the ilk of Jenny Tonge, who is a deranged Israel hater. But there are also those who shut their eyes to the indifference of so many of the wealthy Muslim countries for monetary reasons. Big business at an international level is at play here. A part we can all play in creating a better world CHIEF RABBI EPHRAIM MIRVIS

I

n 1960, as campaigning began for a general election in Israel, the Mapai Party printed a series of full-page advertisements, using quotes from an interview with Ha’aretz by Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik zt’l, urging voters to abandon Mizrachi and to vote for it instead. The rav, whose support for Mizrachi was well known, was upset his comments were being misused and wrote a number of letters to Mizrachi leaders in Israel, in which he expounded about his identification with them. In one such letter, he offered an assessment of the importance of Mizrachi as a ‘movement’. He wrote: “This movement holds within its hand the answer to a serious dilemma: How can we insert our eternal values into the splendour of the modern world? How can we remain steadfast and strong in the very centre of the modern society and sanctify the new – and that which is occurring on a daily basis – with utmost holiness? According to the worldview of our movement, Judaism is immensely powerful

and capable of achieving anything. The most developed society too ... also requires our Torah and only in it, will it find satisfaction.” If anything, the dilemma Rav Soloveitchik describes is more pertinent today than during his lifetime. In the modern age, we are truly blessed with ever more sophisticated technology. Whether in science, commerce or the arts, creativity and innovation abound. But, how can they be embraced by Judaism, which so faithfully clings to ancient tradition? I was honoured recently to accept the position of president of Mizrachi UK. I did so because I believe our eternal challenge as Jews is both straightforward and also awash with complexity: How to sanctify the innovations of the modern world in accordance with our eternal Jewish values? In Mizrachi, I see a movement striving to strike that ideal balance. The root of the Hebrew word for Chanukah means ‘dedication’ or ‘consecration’. When we sing the words Chanukat Hamizbeach in Ma’oz Tzur, it is a reference to the consecration of the altar upon which sacrifices were brought – the designation of a physical location as a place of holiness. Indeed, seeking ways to illuminate the material world with the light of Godliness is one

of the central themes of the story of Chanukah The Maccabees were fighting for the freedom to bring spirituality into a society dominated by the Hellenistic materialism of the Greek Empire. The lights of Chanukah in our homes are a symbol of the miracle of Chanukah but also represent our commitment to the splendour of Torah and Mitzvot which bring the light of the divine into a world dominated by the mundane and extraneous distractions of life. Nachmanides taught there is nothing physical in this world which is inherently good or evil. Throughout history, money has been used to wield power over those more vulnerable but also to provide much-needed support to them; influence to manipulate and distort, but also to inspire and encourage. Indeed, the challenge finds a nationalist dimension in

Medinat Yisrael. The responsibility to recognise Israel for the remarkable miracle it is, to see it in the context of history and to celebrate the monumental contribution that it makes to Jewish life, lies within us all. Einstein said: “There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” Each of us is blessed with a unique set of characteristics, skills and opportunities in life. We can embrace them as the divine gifts they are or decide not to. We can choose to serve God or to serve ourselves. Let us embark on a journey together in which we choose to celebrate his miracles, to shine the light of his divine presence wherever there is darkness and to play our part in perfecting the world around us according to his will.

riday-night kiddush in shul makes me feel like crying. Perhaps you know this quaint little ritual. The rabbi, or cantor, or someone important, pours a full chalice of grape juice at the end of the Kabbalat Shabbat service, turns to the congregation and intones the Friday night benediction over the cup. The problem is kiddush doesn’t count halachically unless accompanied by a meal. This meal-less kiddush is simply a vestigial throwback to the time when people used to eat their Shabbat supper in the synagogue. Now it remains as one of those nostalgic Jewish anachronisms, like the second Yekum Purkan. Each week leaves a sad cup of half-drunk juice for the caretaker to deal with. Friday-night kiddush in shul fills me with hope, for it’s not hard to envision just who was eating Friday-night meals in warm wooden shuls in the shtetle – the poor, the travellers, the homeless.

RITUALS THAT ONCE SERVED THE POOR AND DOWNTRODDEN ARE NOW EMPTY AND TOKENISTIC It’s not difficult to set the scene. Each week, as the service would end, the rabbi would say kiddush over the wine and invite all those who had nowhere to eat to stay behind, near the stove, with a bit of challah, some soup perhaps. The shul doors would remain open, and all those who were hungry could indeed come and eat. Fast-forward to my shul today. Take the Shabbat-morning kiddush as our sample. The sushi, nestled next to the rugalach, with the crackers and dips right behind. And we all dig in, eat off little plastic plates and drink from little plastic cups, and then, after devouring all that

(and filling about four heaving bin-bags), we all go home and eat some more. And so few of us were ever hungry to begin with. Because there are scant Jewish poor in our cities, these rituals that once served the downtrodden are now empty and tokenistic. The shabbat-day kiddush reminds us to welcome the stranger at our gates. But our shul gates are locked, our security on high alert. For the poor stranger, the message is clear: ignore our liturgical promises, this is a place only for Jews. Nominally, this sounds like a whinge from the interfaith left. “Open our synagogues when hate-crime is on the rise? Are you nuts? “Follow the lead of so many churches (and more than a few mosques, Hindu temples and gurdwaras) and respond to the rising tide of absolute hunger in our neighbourhoods by creating a soup kitchen for the poor in the empty shul hall? Meshuganneh! The goyim will trief up the place.” (This was the response I actually had after floating the idea to one well-heeled synagogue). But just recently, Dame Louise Casey issued a report on the state of (dis)integration of British society. Her conclusions were stark: The

less integrated we are as a nation, the greater the economic and social costs we face – estimated as some £6billion a year. Our shut synagogue doors; our traditional Jewish school curriculum under the fatwa of the Beth Din which specifically forbids visits to any mosque or church, temple or gurdwara; our community centres in the poshest parts of London; our Shabbat UK navel-gazing obsession with our own community – these are not neutral activities; they are detrimental to the UK economy . Back in 2015, Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush wrote: “We’ve had 2,000 years’ experience of living as a minority – Muslims have had almost none. They need to undergo and build a set of values that adjusts to that status…I believe by force of reasonable argument we can show them there’s a better way than feeling like aliens in their own countries.” Though we Jews may be a model minority, let’s not get too holier-than-thou. As long as our kiddush ceremony welcomes no poor, our shul halls keep no homeless warm from winter cold, our community centres teach more krav maga than English, what right have we to preach our ways to the stranger at our gates?

The medics who make 2016 worth remembering after all JENNI FRAZER

I

t doesn’t matter what part of the political spectrum you favour: pretty much everyone is agreed 2016 has been an extraordinary year which few of us are ready to have repeated in a hurry. Besides the wide-scale lunacy which has overtaken many parts of the planet — that’s the Brexit referendum result and the election of Donald Trump in one misbegotten handful — and the near-misses such as the frighteningly close far-right win in Austria, we are looking back on a year of rising terrorism and misery for so many. From the mass deaths resulting from extremism in places such as Nice – and, more recently, in Berlin – to the individual agony of the family of murdered MP Jo Cox, 2016 has been a year of desperation and unhappiness. And yet, I’d like to shine a little sunshine for readers in these last otherwise mean-spirited days that have characterised this miserable past year of 2016. And that sunshine lies in the quiet, relative-

ly unsung work done by Israel to help, treat and save its Syrian neighbours who have been caught up in Assad’s bloody civil war. It came fully to light last week, when prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu presided over a preChanukah/Christmas reception for members of the foreign press based in Israel. And, though I would be among the first to note the prime minister’s particular brand of political opportunism, I was also rather happy to hear him announce that Israel was ready to take in injured refugees from Aleppo and arrange for them to be treated in the country’s hospitals. He said: “We see the tragedy of terrible suffering of civilians and I’ve asked the foreign ministry to seek ways to expand our medical assistance to the civilian casualties of the Syrian tragedy, specifically in Aleppo, where we’re prepared to take in wounded women and children, and also men if they’re not combatants.” Netanyahu went on: “We’d like to do that: bring them to Israel, take care of them in our hospitals as we’ve done with thousands of Syr-

ian civilians. We’re looking into ways of doing this; it’s being explored as we speak.” It was just a throwaway line, that “as we’ve done with thousands of Syrian civilians”, but in fact it was nothing but the truth: for the past three years the men and women of the IDF medical corps and of Israel’s northern hospitals have been quietly and patiently treating more than 2,000 Syrians. And those Syrians have come in all shapes and sizes, and some of them may well be militants fighting against Assad’s government forces. Since the Syrians began arriving in February 2013, a steady stream have been making their way across the frontier; one of the results to come out of this is that Syrian ba-

bies have been born at Ziv Medical Centre in Sfat, just 40 minutes from the Syrian border. It’s not all sweetness and light; Israel knows that too often it patches up young men who return to violence once back in Syria, and great care is taken to ensure that no trace of Hebrew lettering remains on their post-hospital medication or other aid. And yet, what a terrific thing for Israel to be doing, and how great a message must inevitably be seeping through to these Syrian patients: that Israel, the great enemy, is actually a good place with good people in it. Not perfect, but pretty nice in contrast to Syria. So l’chaim to Israel’s medics — and here’s to a peaceful year for all of us.

It wasn’t all bad news... Francine Wolfisz profiles the famous names for whom 2016 was good reason to celebrate

STAN LEE

Marvel Comics supremo Stan Lee saw the broadcast of Lucky Man, his first drama series written for UK television. “People ask me what superpower I would have, or what power I haven’t already given to a hero. I have always thought luck would probably be the greatest power of all, because if you are lucky, everything turns out right.” SUSAN BIER Danish-Jewish director Susanne Bier was at the helm of The Night Manager, the first TV adaptation of a John Le Carré novel in more than 20 years. The gripping BBC drama earned her an Emmy award. She told Jewish News: “My Jewishness has definitely impacted my work. Many of my previous films have dealt with family, which is so much a part of our DNA, but so too is having a distinct sense of catastrophe, because our history is full of it.” GAL GADOT Actress Gal Gadot took on the iconic role of Wonder Woman in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. The former Miss Israel told Jewish News: “I sometimes think maybe I put too much pressure on myself, but my mother raised me to be

ambitious and every time I start to worry too much, I think about how my mother has led her life and what she taught me.” MICHAEL MAYER Michael Mayer was in the director’s chair for the critically-acclaimed revival of Funny Girl at London’s Savoy Theatre, with Sheridan Smith fully embracing the role of Fanny Brice. Mayer said: “You take one of the great musicals set within a different time and culture different from your own and you research. I would say as a result, Sheridan has definitely embraced her inner Jewess!” DAVID BECKHAM Football icon David Beckham told a 200-strong audience at JW3 he feels partly Jewish and although not brought up in the faith recalled that “whenever [my grandfather] went to synagogue, I was a part of that”. His Jewish maternal grandfather, Joseph West, died in 2009. STEVEN SPIELBERG Ahead of the release of his animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The BFG, twotime Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg told Jewish News he had no plans to slow down or “sit back on my tush”. The prolific American-Jewish filmmaker, now 70, added: “I’ve seen the one thing that happens when directors get older is they still have the passion and the determination to tell stories, but because of their age the people who hire you look at you as a relic from the past. I am not going to be a relic from the past!”

HONEY G Reality shows will never be the same, thanks to Honey G, aka Anna Georgette Gilford, on The X Factor. The 35-yearold from Harrow attracted as much criticism from those who believed she was a fake act as adoration from a legion of fans on social media. She didn’t make the final, but is still set to make her mark thanks to a lucrative deal with the Syco record label. In a frank interview with Jewish News, she revealed she had to deal with anti-Semitism: “When I was growing up, people used to make fun of me, referring to me as a ‘Jewish princess’ or talking to me about me looking Jewish, having a Jewish nose. It’s quite insulting.” ALAN SUGAR Ahead of Series 12 of The Apprentice, Jewish News asked Alan Sugar if he had ever made mistakes in business. The self-made billionaire quipped: “Did I make mistakes? How long have you got?” He added: “In business, you make mistakes but you get a lot more right than you get wrong and that’s how you come forward and that’s how you succeed.”

What does the Torah say about… Barack Obama’s legacy

RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS

RABBI ARIEL ABEL

We have so many distractions in our lives I’m amazed we get anything done. We wander off and explore irrelevance rather than the important. On social media, we fall victim to the desire to pursue a minor point to distraction – ultimately a self-destructive approach, because by pursuing minor preoccupations we forget our core activities. Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk told of a man with a special tobacco box, made from the horn of a holy goat. One day, it could not be found. He eventually met the animal, whose horns reached the heavens. The goat let him cut a piece of horn to make another box. Others felt the horn made the tobacco taste better and since the goat was pretty free with its horn, they too each received a piece; now the goat wanders about with no horns. We start this week’s parasha with Joseph having been used by others for their own benefit. He tries constantly to do right, by his brothers, by Potiphar in his home, and by the butler and the baker with their dreams. Only in this week’s parsha does he come into his own, showing wisdom and helping Pharaoh and Egyptians to avoid the coming famine. The essence of the situation is that none of us should allow ourselves to be the vehicle for satisfying others’ desires. By letting ourselves be sucked into a Facebook discussion, a Twitter storm or political controversies, we will, like the goat, end up losing the one valuable thing we have.

When Barack Obama first took office, his critics were openly suspicious. Barack Hussein Obama shares a middle name with a tyrant whom America had only just deposed in Iraq and although he was born in Hawaii some said he was a non-native and Kenyan and therefore unable to occupy the top job in the White House and command the American armed forces. On the issue of Israel, Obama has not been warm. While insisting on the importance of Israel’s security, he has consistently blocked the Senate’s majority vote from recognising Jeru-

STRIKINGLY, THE FIRST FAMILY IS THE FIRST IN MANY DECADES TO HAVE REMAINED FREE OF SCANDAL

salem as Israel’s capital. He took a dovish stance on Iran, relaxing sanctions without divesting them from nuclear power. Thus, he copiously heaped his goodwill on a regime that insists on Israel’s destruction. And last week his administration dramatically abstained on a motion at the UN condemning Israeli settlements. The body language between Obama and Netanyahu has been nothing short of hostile. Many Jews shunned Obama and, based on his Middle Eastern policies, deny he had any worth. However, many positive attributes, valuable to Torah values, permeated his presidency. The nearest the US has ever come to forming an NHS was the ‘Obama Care’ health plan. His aim was no Americans would be without adequate health care simply because they couldn’t afford it. Throughout his presidency, Obama was sensitive and caring to people often discriminated against such as LGBT and Afro-Americans. As the first Afro-American president, he reflected the values common to all Jews in seeking to champion the cause of the oppressed. Perhaps most strikingly, the First

Family is the first in many decades to have remained scandal free. The example set by the Obamas is healthy for the nation as a whole. The Obama legacy has not only set precedents for social justice but has also proven its worth as a family with values to emulate.

The Bible Says What?

Progressively Speaking

The Torah’s problematic views on child marriage

Good riddance to 2016, but what is there to look forward to in 2017?

RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS Some weeks ago in Istanbul, the government was forced into a rethink after thousands of women protested the idea that child-rapists could avoid prison by marrying their victims. This vile proposal would have enabled child marriages to go unchallenged, while placing victims into a so-called ‘normalised’ life with their abusers. Yet in Deuteronomy 22:28-29 this is precisely what Torah suggests: “If a man finds a virgin girl who was not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give 50 [shekels of] silver to the girl’s father, and she shall become his wife, because he violated her. He shall not be able to send her away all of his life.” I used to try to understand this verse as having the woman’s interests at heart – in that society, the woman having been raped, her marriageability was now in doubt and so the rapist had to take responsibility for his actions and look after her.

He couldn’t send her away without her consent (and, furthermore, the Talmud says he can’t marry her without her consent either, which helps a little, although the social pressures on the woman to choose him would have been significant). Of course, we wouldn’t endorse this as a solution today, but perhaps would take the idea that we value the long-term needs of the victim and interpret the result differently. Yet in light of events in Turkey, we can see just how dangerous such laws can be when not understood as having been made in a particular time, which need re-understanding through the ages (as the Talmud and responsa do for us to some extent). In the past we might have hoped that such laws could have acted as deterrents. Today I fear they would do quite the opposite.

 Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers is community educator at Reform Judaism

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY Progressive Jews are under attack in Israel both verbally and physically – the most extreme example being the graffiti death threats in Ra’anana issued to Progressive Jewish leaders. And then there are the large number of people we have lost through death, including our beloved teacher and mentor, Rabbi Lionel Blue OBE. So, given all this, how can we look ahead to 2017? The beauty of Judaism is in how it constantly challenges us and how we respond. Just as in the happiest times, we are commanded to remember the world is not yet redeemed, so

in the most difficult and challenging times we have a responsibility to find the beauty and potential in the world. My personal inspiration has always been Leonard Cohen, whom we also sadly lost in 2016. He famously sang: “There is a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in.” Similarly, Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik explained it is not about trying to understand why God lets these horrors happen but about asking ourselves how we will respond to them. For 2017, we must look beyond what affects us directly as Jews and ask by what means can we join with others – especially those who are under threat – to form one global community.

THE BEAUTY OF JUDAISM IS IN HOW IT CHALLENGES US AND HOW WE REPOND

The past year has not been a good one for Progressive Jews, or indeed progressives of any stripe. After the hatred unleashed during the UK referendum, the US presidential election and various votes around Europe, I’m sure we will all be glad to see the back of 2016. There have been so many acts of terrorism, it’s hard even to recall them all – the most recent being the sickening attack in Berlin that killed 12 people, while the tragedy of the battle for Aleppo became more horrific with every passing day. Jews have seen a rise in anti-Semitism in the UK while

Expert professional advice / Ask our experts

Ask our Our trusty team of advisers answer your questions about everything from law and finance to dating and dentistry. This week: The best time to sell a house, finding the right care provider and weight training for the over 60s... STEVE WAYNE BENJAMIN STEVENS See full profile on pages 18-19

Dear Steve What’s the best time of year to sell and what can I do to get my home ready to be put on the market? Alice

Dear Alice There is no such thing as “the best time”. The old obsession with spring has now changed, and over the past five years we have become as busy in August as we are in June. A new year will always bring new buyers to the market, so some could say that this is just as much an opportune moment to put up your home.

POLLY LANDESBERG SWEET TREE HOME CARE SERVICES See full profile on pages 18-19

Dear Polly My mother is in need of support at home. There are so many providers out there, how do I tell the good from the bad? Avishai Dear Avishai Choosing a quality care provider for yourself or a loved one is a life-changing decision. Spend as much

time as you can doing your research, speak to families of existing service clients, and make flexibility of service a priority. In the end, you must be fully satisfied by your choice of care, and have the freedom to make changes whenever you want. Family members should be able to trust their loved one is in good hands. Being an equal partner in the care is an important factor for the individual and for family and friends. Here are some top tips for researching care services: • Meet at least three potential care providers and ask challenging questions, especially about possible hidden entry and exit costs. Some charge for the setup of care and also have termination periods and fees.

It is still true, however, that as the weather changes, spring is still a great season for selling – but, again, there is no “best time”. We are often asked how you can get your home ready. The most important thing is for your property to be as uncluttered as possible, which allows us to take bright, clean photos to enable us to market your property in the best light. Sometimes, a fresh lick of neutral paint can transform a dark space and allow buyers to imagine what they could do with your home. The only other thing worth spending money on is “kerb appeal”. Because we still like to market properties with a front shot, lots of buyers decide on a viewing by this first photo. Spending time and money tidying your front garden and clearing away rubbish can also make a big impact when putting your home up for sale. • If looking for live-in home care, visit a care home for comparison. You might be surprised by other options. • Trial service providers for a week’s respite care to get a true sense of their services. • Look for companies that invest in training and development of their carers, and ask them about their recruitment processes. • Word of mouth is the most credible reinforcement of a quality provider – speak to friends, family, GPs and other community members. Ask for the most recent client feedback reports and contacts for references. • Review inspection reports online at the Care Quality Commission website www.cqc.org.uk. It is a trove of independent feedback on services near you.

ABIGAIL FELSENSTEIN DYNAMIC DEFINITION See full profile on pages 18-19

Dear Abigail My name is Anna and I am 60 years old. I have recently become more aware of my changing body and age and therefore have started going to the gym to try and combat some of the effects. So far I have been working on some cardio machines and doing

Dear Anna That is an excellent question! Many of my clients have asked about this and the short answer to your inquiry is a definite yes! Weight training has been shown to produce huge benefits whatever the age of the person choosing to follow that particular method – in fact, I would go so far as to say it becomes critical as you do get older because of the benefits it brings. Adults can lose between 4lbs and 6lbs of muscle tissue for every decade of their lives, which obvi-

ously can lead to a significant loss of strength and a slowing down of one’s metabolism. By undertaking a structured programme of strength training, you can regain your lost muscle tissue and increase your strength and metabolism and even bone density. All of these things are vital to help people of all ages not only to stay healthy and fit but also to prevent unnecessary weight gain. If you have never used weights before, I do suggest booking in a few sessions with us to learn the correct technique to avoid injury. Hope this has helped – and good luck with your positive lifestyle changes!

LAnd of promises Sharon Feinstein enjoys a touch of luxury in the city where A-list celebrities are never far away…

L

os Angeles – big, brash, speedy, always sunny – is the place of hope and pots of gold. The first thing they said when I checked into my hotel was: “Are you living the dream?” Now there’s a question. People move to California to reinvent themselves, but not all is as it seems beneath those promises, mansions, intangible wealth and sparkling white teeth. Beverly Hills, where face creams cost around $3,000 a pot and Beyoncé walks past, is a kind of Toytown. So clean, modern, unreal, it’s a bit like a stage set. You expect Clint Eastwood to be standing behind you shouting: “Cut!” And he’s not far away. In this town, no stars are. The best spa I’ve had outside Thailand was at the Montage Beverly Hills, spa of choice for A-listers, but you mustn’t mention who. Spa manager Ozzie arranged a 90-minute treatment that knocked 10 years off my accumulated stress, and dare I say ageing, which is a real bonus in the “must be young and beautiful” culture of LA. Blonde masseuse Brandy gave me the harmony oil pummelling of my life, and my daughter and I rounded it all off soaking in the bubbling Turkish bath. Beverly Hills’ only five-star and most spacious spa, it’s the place where stars prepare

for their definitive Oscar appearances. We floated up to the rooftop pool for lunch overlooking the city, and then dinner downstairs at newly-opened Georgie’s. This patio restaurant faces the low-lit trees and fountain in the piazza, with soft jazz drifting on the warm night air. The food is imaginative, with a lively menu. I can safely say I’ve never had fresh tuna as delicate and mouth-watering, and delicious sole with just-sweet-enough honeyed carrots. My top restaurants in LA were Yamashiro, the Peninsula’s Belvedere, Geoffrey’s in Malibu and Firefly Studio City. They are all dramatically different, but mustvisit venues. Yamashiro, under chef Christophe Bonnegrace, took me to sushi heaven, the dishes perfectly made, bounteous and brilliant. It’s a buzzy casual atmosphere, California cool, with cocktails sipped from pudding-bowl glasses in the flickering candlelight and breath-taking views of the city below. The Belvedere is simple, understated elegance, a dreamy feel on the terrace where we sat under the canopy of a sprawling pine with heat lamps and soft music. We drank Italian soave and ate Mediterranean dishes done with panache and great attention to detail. LA can feel exhilarating, with those blue sunny skies, the wind in your air, towering palms along the wide streets and seemingly happy, welcoming people.

Outside Tel Aviv and New York, Los Angeles has the largest Jewish community in the world and there is plenty to see. Steven Spielberg has created the USC Shoah Foundation, the largest archive of Holocaust testimonies, while his mum, Leah Adler, serves up the best blintzes at her kosher restaurant, the Milky Way. The city is comfortable for Jews in a million ways and it’s hard to find a major diaspora hospital more Jewish than Cedars-Sinai. But Los Angeles isn’t just a city, of course. It’s an idea, the elusive pot at the end of the rainbow, the glittering possibility, the lottery ticket someone must win. Drive down to the beach at Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway and eat at Geoffrey’s with views of the curving coastline and a long history of satisfied clients – Robert De Niro, Travolta and us too, because in LA everyone is a star. We ate baked brie in puff pastry, and then pan-seared Chilean sea bass on the open deck with good Napa Valley wine. Back in LA’s Studio City neighbourhood, where Clooney loves to dine, we hit Firefly, a day after Jay Z and Beyoncé had been seen in the same red-draped cabana. The restaurant is rather iconic, staged on part of a hillside lush with greenery glittering in the

lantern light. It’s upbeat and super-trendy with a great jazz band and mouth-watering food. My flavourful ricotta of pappardelle mushroom, spinach, and truffle was so authentic, it could easily have been made by an Italian mamma in Naples. Beyond the Hollywood of it all, and unlike Jack Kerouac, I felt there was a lot to love in this City of Angels. Kerouac described LA as “a jungle”, but for me the city had it all: the big blue sky, a changing landscape from mountains to ocean to desert to valley, all within a few minutes’ drive, and the great Getty Museum. It’s a city of nothing short of sheer energy and exuberance.

WHERE TO STAY... Sharon stayed at Spa Montage Beverly Hills, montagehotels.com/spamontage/beverlyhills, and dined at Yamashiro, yamashirohollywood.com, the Belvedere at the Peninsula Beverly Hills, beverlyhills.peninsula.com, Geoffrey’s Malibu, geoffreysmalibu.com and Firefly, fireflystudiocity.com

The sleep timer and pre-installed nature sounds also help you gently drift off, after even the busiest of days. When it’s time to get up, the (battery backed-up) dual alarm system lets you choose between waking to a favourite radio station, an alarm tone, or one of the pre-installed gentle, yet remarkably effective, nature sounds.

Available in five high-gloss lacquered finishes, the DAB/DAB+/ FM-equipped system also features Bluetooth, meaning you can wirelessly stream music from the likes of smartphones and tablet devices, such as iPads. There is also a USB slot for charging mobile devices, a headphone output for personal listening sessions, and six clearly labelled pre-sets, meaning that your favourite radio stations are never more than a click away. And when it comes to filling a room with sound, the sonoroRADIO excels, employing its innovative 360˚ speaker design to effortlessly spread sound throughout even larger rooms. Factor in the remote control, and anti-theft key lock security feature and you have the perfect audio all-in-one. For more information, visit www.sonoro.co.uk

Sport / Footballer crowned our Sports Star Of The Year

‘A perfect finish!’ ... That’s the verdict of Wycombe’s Scott Kashket after

1,000 JN readers vote him Jewish sports star of 2016 By Andrew Sherwood andrews@thejngroup.com @JewishNewsUK

Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Scott Kashket has been named Jewish sports star of 2016 by Jewish News readers. The 20-year-old amassed more than 1,000 votes, securing an overwhelming 82 percent of the vote, as he ended his year on a high. He told Jewish News: “I’d like to thank all the people who went out of their way to back me, it’s been a great end to the year for me!” Admitting the year didn’t get off to the best of starts for him, he said: “It’s

funny, it didn’t start off too well, but then I moved to Wycombe and it all began to work out for me, so hopefully I can go on from here.” His move in August, from Leyton Orient to the Wanderers, was initially on a loan period, but his performances on the pitch, which helped move the League Two side into a play-off spot, earned him a three-year contract at the club last month. The side’s top scorer, his latest goal was at the weekend in a 3-3 draw at high-flying Plymouth – his 12th goal in 13 appearances – and he’s fast becoming one of the stars of League Two. Looking ahead to 2017, he said: “I just want to carry on how it’s going

for me at the moment, and if anything changes thereon in, I’ll deal with it then.” Runner-up in the poll was Yarden Gerbi. The judo star, who claimed Israel’s first Olympic medal at the Rio Games in the summer told Jewish News: “I’m working hard to achieve my goals and my dreams, so it makes me feel supported when people vote for me like this. “I wish everyone a happy Chanukah and happy New Year, and that 2017 will be as amazing as 2016 was.” US gymnast Aly Raisman finished third, with Ori Sasson, Israel’s other medallist at Rio, one place behind in fourth.
