KNOWING
Nick
IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE NOT WAKING UP TO NICK FERRARI. From 7am to 10am on weekday mornings, his dulcet tones on LBC ease Londoners into whatever angst-ridden issue is dominating the headlines. As a newspaper veteran, Nick knows how to make a splash on air, and he has entertained us with numerous memorable encounters, such as exposing the miscalculations of former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, who had budgeted £300,000 for10,000 new police officers. “What are you paying them?” queried Nick, who already knew the answer. Always on his toes even though he is sitting down, Nick knows how to make mincemeat of guests with opposing views, but is much kinder to callers – or at least he tries to be. David Cameron – remember him? – once suggested that Nick he stood as the Tory candidate for London mayor he would win, but rather than risk it, Nick has remained on air while sharing his talent with TV, most recently as a regular on Sky’s The Pledge. So what else would you like to know about Nick Ferrari...? How long have you been on LBC and what do you love about the job? Records hadn’t begun when I joined LBC, but it was around the time the ravens arrived at the Tower of London! It does, I know, sound corny, but it really, truly, is the listeners. You simply never know what they’re going to say, or what’s going to happen next. I remember when I was in an episode of Extras, with Ricky Gervais, and he came to the studio, listened for a while and said some of it was comedy so brilliant it could never be scripted. Who’s your favourite Jewish caller? This is a very moving one. It was an elderly woman from Temple Fortune. We were discussing the importance of Holocaust Memorial Day and she called in. She said: “I was a 14-year-old girl imprisoned in Auschwitz. Can you imagine what I went through?” That chilling line has never left me. Have you been to Israel? If not, why not? No. Twice it was arranged (OMG! one occasion
with Boris Johnson) and on both occasions just days before I was due, there were significant uprisings. A working trip for a charity is being planned for later summer, so watch out! If you make it to Jerusalem, what will you write on the paper you put into the Kotel? A prayer giving thanks for, and asking for, continued safety and security of my family and loved ones. Ever been to a Jewish wedding? No. But if any insane Jewish lady is reading this ... What was your best year in Fleet Street and why? I loved Fleet Street but, truthfully, probably the year The Sun left it and went to Wapping. It was the start of a glorious revolution. What do you put on your bagel? Smoked salmon, naturally. But no cream cheese, thank you.
7
What topic in the news would you most like to drop from your show? Terrorist atrocities and paedophile rings. Will you be watching the Eurovision Song Contest live from Tel Aviv? I won’t be watching, but my favourite Eurovision winner has to be Bucks Fizz. I reported on them for The Sunday Mirror and then The Sun and they were smashing folk. How do you wake up in the morning and at what time? At 5.30am a member of my staff quietly enters the room and gently strokes the side of my face while the sound of whales plays in the background. My bath is then run and the newspapers freshly ironed... Finish the lines “If I Were A Rich Man...” I’d get the same tax lawyers as Starbucks. Do you get fan mail? What’s the best example? Both fan and hate mail. Not sure if it qualifies as best, but I have been in receipt of pictures from a few women of parts of their anatomy only their lovers should see! I’ve no idea why. And I’ve certainly never asked for it. Salt beef or cholent? Salt beef. My late dad worked at The Daily Mirror when it was in Holborn and he used to take me to a restaurant called The Nosherie in Hatton Garden. The salt beef sandwiches were simply out of this world. Magically, your heritage reveals that you are Jewish. What name would you choose for yourself? Anything that goes as well as “Nick” in front of the name Ferrari. You are invited to a Passover dinner; who would you like the other seven guests to be? Assuming they have to be living: Jeff Bezos, the Duke of Edinburgh, Kim Jong-un, Angela Merkel, Alan Carr, Julian Assange and Jennifer Aniston. She’s sitting next to me, by the way. What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Try to maintain a sense of humour. And never be the last to leave the green room.
A tourist asks you to recommend two unique things to do in London – what do you reply? Be sure to stand on Waterloo Bridge as dusk falls; it’s a truly stunning and unique view. And, finances permitting, eat out as much as you can. The restaurant scene in this town has gone from being worse than the worst public school in the 1950s, to being the buzziest around. If you could ask any question to a living politician, who and what would it be? I’d ask Emmanuel Macron: “Why do you suppose more and more of your citizens are starting to despise you?” Barbra Streisand or Goldie Hawn and why? Goldie Hawn. I remember watching her as a boy in a wonderfully anarchic TV show called Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. She was tremendous. If you weren’t a journalist and presenter, what would you be and why? As the Chief Rabbi post isn’t currently vacant (and I don’t think I qualify), I’ll go for conductor. Of music, by the way, not buses.

COUNT ON
Rachel
ESSEX GIRL RACHEL RILEY needs no introduction. She’s been hitting the headlines lately in her new role as a vocal opponent of antisemitism. For those unfamiliar with Jewish News’ favourite geek, she is the only person who can really decipher the numbers on Countdown as she has an honours degree in mathematics from Oxford University. Had it not been for her dislike of daily commutes, Rachel would have worked in the City, but Deutsche Bank’s loss was Nick Hewer and Jimmy Carr’s gain. And there’s more...
1
Rachel beat 1,000 applicants for the role to replace Carol Vorderman on Countdown. She takes the job of solving the numbers round so seriously that if she cannot solve it on the show, she takes it away with her to finish.
2
Co-host on the comedy show 8 Out Of 10 Cats headed by Jimmy Carr, she was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013 and now has a permanent dance partner in Pasha Kovalev and is learning Russian.
3
She’s co-presented ITV’s It’s Not Rocket Science and appeared on Top Gear, Would I Lie to You and Room 101.
4
Rachel is also an avid Manchester United fan, whose passion for football rivals even her talent for numbers crunching.
5
“Religion wise, I choose Man United,”she wrote on Twitter. “Life wise I choose the options without intolerance, hatred and fear.”
6
Rachel is involved with Premier League Primary Stars, which helps children grow in confidence on and off the pitch – and has appeared on Sky
Sports, presenting Fantasy Football Club and Friday Night Football.
7
Over recent months, the presenter also emerged as the unlikely face of the fight against racism, after she spoke out against Jeremy Corbyn.
8
Rachel revealed in January that she was forced to get extra security after receiving a torrent of abuse from online trolls for speaking out.
9
Her tenacity earned her a mention in the House of Commons.
10
Rachel loves a rude word on Countdown: “The funniest ones for me – because you get such a range of people who watch... – are words like ‘growler’, where old people won’t know there’s a funny connotation to it, but everyone around my age is going to be screaming.

CHALLAH

CHALLAH QUEEN ALLEGRA BENITAH is a former-tax lawyer turned food influencer who runs a business teaching the ins and outs of braiding and baking. Benita, or Challah Mummy as she is most widely known, has previously appeared on ITV demonstrating how to bake sweet, savoury or rainbow challah. The mum-of-two, who also happens
to be the daughter of TV personality Vanessa Feltz, took a career break after having her two children and got into challah-making after attending a workshop at her son’s school. She pursued a legal career at an international firm in London after graduating from Cambridge before she made the switch. Her Instagram feed, which boasts over 4,000 followers, is filled with colourful and inventive designs and helpful tips for aspiring bakers. challahmummy@gmail.com

ABOUT
Norwood
NORWOOD IS THE UK’S LARGEST JEWISH CHARITY, supporting vulnerable children and their families, children with special educational needs and those with learning disabilities and autism.
For families facing breakdown, abuse, disability, mental health problems or crisis, Norwood offers everything from specialist social work support to counselling, support groups to respite care. From preschool through to college, it provides educational psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and specialist teaching to help children and young people overcome barriers to learning. Norwood’s services for adults with learning disabilities encourage independence and choice by providing accommodation options; social work support; and access to learning, leisure and
volunteering opportunities. Its team of highly skilled practitioners and family of services provide people who turn to Norwood with the support they need – and for as long as they need it – to enjoy fulfilled and engaged lives. For more information visit norwood.org.uk
NORWOOD SUPPORTS THE WHOLE FAMILY WHEN ROCHELLE AND ELLIOT were told their eight-and-a-halfmonth-old daughter Annie had leftside hemiplegia, a form of cerebral palsy causing a weakness down her left side, it was a huge shock. The family was thrown into the chaotic world of formal diagnoses, tests, scans and appointments. “I couldn’t bring myself to say the word disabled, but I was desperate to get answers about Annie’s condition,” says
you hear the words your child is “ When disabled, everything changes. We had so many questions about how Annie would cope. Norwood answered them, and did so much more.
”
Rochelle. “You know the disability isn’t going to go away, so you grieve for the child you thought you had.” Annie finally started sitting up on her own at 12 months, she crawled at 14 months and took her first steps at 16 months. Things seemed to be improving for Annie and her family. Then, when Annie was just over three years old, she suffered a tonic-clonic epileptic fit. “It was a full body seizure and, having just started to come to terms with the first diagnosis, and getting over major surgery, we were broken again,” recounts Elliot. Annie was also later diagnosed with autism at seven. Rochelle says: “The NHS didn’t help us to

understand. They just gave us information.” All this time, right from when Annie was born, what made everything so much harder for Rochelle and Elliot was the lack of sleep they were getting. “Annie struggles to sleep and wakes multiple times in the night. Even with melatonin to get her to sleep, there is no guarantee it will keep her asleep,” says Elliot. “Our family was breaking down due to the stress that Annie was causing us and, even with family help, we needed more focused input. “When we realised we needed support, we called Norwood – and we got the help we needed. They sent someone to assess our family and while the local authority’s disabled child’s team took us seriously and gave us support for Annie, we knew Norwood would be there for the whole family.” “Looking after Annie is physically and emotionally hard,” adds Rochelle. Now aged 12, Annie has behavioural problems, the speaking age of a three or fouryear-old, needs help washing and dressing, and has no sense of danger. “Everything you do requires extra planning. It’s like having a young child all the time. The last time we went out as a family was five years ago. We’ve never had a family holiday. Samuel is young and doesn’t know any different, but Harry’s growing into a young man now and I’m very aware of his emotional needs. It’s important we make time for him.” Bucket and Spades, Norwood’s short-breaks service, gives the family some vital time off. Rochelle explains: “Annie really enjoys it and asks to go back as soon as she gets home. The staff are fantastic.
They take her to museums and shopping trips, and make her favourite food. It’s also important to us that the staff understand about being Jewish because it means I don’t have to explain everything. “The service enables me to spend quality time with the boys. Once I’ve taken Annie, I can ask Harry what he’d like to do. Buckets and Spades gives us a window of normality. Our home feels very relaxed. It’s an exceptional service and means everything to us.” Rochelle and Harry also directly benefited from Norwood’s support. Harry attended Norwood’s monthly Siblings’ Group, providing ongoing support for brothers or sisters of people with special educational needs and disability, and had sessions with a Norwood social worker. Rochelle says: “He really appreciated having someone to talk to outside of the family.” Rochelle found Norwood’s counselling helpful. “Norwood was there for our whole family, not just Annie. Norwood is there when you don’t know where else to go. It’s all-encompassing.” Elliot explains: “We wish we had made that call to Norwood from the time of the first diagnosis, because they actively wanted to help. “They took us through all the different areas in which we needed support and lightened the burden by saying ‘we can help you with that’. “We have opened up to tell our family’s story because it’s our way of giving back to Norwood to say thank you for making our lives brighter.” Norwood’s Children and Families Service sees and acts on social problems to which others are blind, meeting the ever increasing needs of children and their families within the community. The charity’s aim is to ensure that every adult, child and family who turns to it is given the support they need, for as long as they need it – not only to cope, but thrive.

LIVING THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL LIFE
365 days a year IT IS THE PERFECT SPOT. A piece of land opposite the beach in Herzliya Pituah, between the Dan Acadia Hotel and Herzliya Marina. A great many architects and designers fantasised about filling that spot – but needed the opportunity to design a project for this most desirable slice of virgin beach. The privilege fell to architect Rani Ziss and designer Dana Oberson, who were chosen to plan and erect a building for veteran construction company Ofer Investments, and it would be one of the most prestigious and intriguing projects built along our coastline. The company then chose designer Dana Oberson, owner of the successful studio Oberson Architects in Ramat Hasharon, to design a luxury residential project of the highest standard for a specific and particularly demanding niche audience. We spoke with Dana about the creative process that involved combining two worlds – boutique
hotel and private luxury residence – to achieve the prestigious luxury project on Herzliya beach. “It’s a design that will render you open-mouthed and make you feel like packing your bags as soon as possible,” is what she should say, but she gives credit to architect Rani for creating the structure. “It’s a unique shape – not as a smooth curtain wall cube, but as a complex and intriguing structure. As a result, each apartment is a separate and prominent unit floating in space, which gives the project residents a sense of intimacy, as if they were living in a villa on the beach.” Dana then goes on to talk about the zen atmosphere in the public spaces, including the lobby, which has a rust-coloured Arabic Mashrabiya (decorative balcony) as the centerpiece. The calmness and serenity exhuded by the soft, bright atmosphere is a result of moving away from the rigid urban style and dark colours seen in other buildings throughout the country.
21
A great deal of thought went into the swimming pool in the complex, where Dana has created a practical public space, with room for privacy. “The choice of colours – a combination of beige, green and the colour of shallow water creates a sense of freedom, luxury, the feeling of being aboard a yacht,” she says. As an architect with many years of experience, Dana primarily focused on the exterior of the spaces she designed, but then realised it was not enough and she wanted to be the one who chooses the smallest details, right up to the flower bowl on the table. This attention to detail is also evident in the project overall – including the choice of quality materials that blend together to create the exact atmosphere she wanted to give the residents. When asked who she imagined the target audience to be for these apartments, she said: “Israeli customers who want to feel European, as well as overseas customers who want to be a step away from the beach and enjoy the Israeli weather
in a location and residential environment that feels as if it belongs to another country.”
Live like you dream In all the conversations we had with the design and development people of the ‘Herzliya Pituach on the Sea’ project, one message prevailed – to create a dream project – and they achieved it. It has an unparalleled location – only eight minutes drive from Tel Aviv’s City (even during rush hour) and is within walking distance to the bustling gourmet scene of Herzliya, just along the street. Culture lovers will enjoy the proximity to the Performing Arts Centre of Herzliya, the Zappa concert complex and the galleries nearby. For shoppers, the mall and the design and fashion shops around the compound offer huge choice. So if you are looking for a home in which to spend the most beautiful time of your life, and you have five million shekels to invest in yourself, you should set a date to visit ‘Herzliya Pituach on the Sea’.

TORAH IN
Action
TAL, WHICH STANDS FOR ‘TORAH, ACTION, LIFE’, IS AN EXCITING JEWISH ORGANISATION with a vision of enhancing the lives of young professionals and Jewish youth. It is sponsoring the Education zone at Jewish News’ Family Show & Expo on Sunday at Allianz Park and is running an online campaign live from the event in support of the new building the organisation is buying to use as the TAL centre. Open to all those of Jewish background, with a specific concentration on the Sephardic community, TAL, founded by Rabbi Jonathan Tawil, works closely with all communities ensuring that our youth have a sense of pride in their synagogues, as well as a new and exciting environment in which to flourish. contributions from all the communal rabbis and leaders. The Parasha Sheet is distributed throughout London and the UK to more than 25 synagogues and is enjoyed by thousands. It has also set up a Chavruta night, where people from all backgrounds can come and learn in a fantastic atmosphere. And it has organised weekly Shiurim around the community. On the Action side, TAL has organised many successful themed Shabbatons, attended by more than 200 people. TAL creates an inspiring atmosphere coupled with a great social, which enables participants to meet and develop relationships with youth from the wider community. Recently, TAL organised a sensational international weekend with more than 400 young professionals. Thousands of Jewish young people across the country are already involved in JLGB activities and the organisation will be showcasing even more fantastic opportunities for your children – and it’s all free. There will be laser tag, live quiz shows, team building, glitter face painting, fancy dress, and an interactive photo booth. JLGB is also excited to have a special Purim “puppet spiel” workshop, which will allow children to work with master puppeteers and, with a dose of imagination, retell the story of Purim. For older teens, JLGB is offering an iPadpowered digital animation experience, which they can share live with their friends on social media. JLGB is renowned for its adventure activities, with thousands of young people taking part each year in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and it is excited to live up to expectations by bringing a laser tag arena and other high-octane games, including driving arcades, dance mats and basketball shootouts. Now that’s what you call a Kids & Youth Zone. This sort of thing happens each and every week at the local JLGB group in your community, where the focus is on the individual and aims to recognise and enhance every young person’s potential, building their character to develop their leadership, communication, organisation, initiative, resilience, confidence and creativity. JLGB has created a unique blend of activities that support not only your child’s future, but are also linked to government priorities for youth
and social development. Playing an active part in the local community and wider society is a key value for JLGB, and there is no better time than Purim to help others and support those in need. JLGB will be running social action projects on the day for all the family to take part in, including packing and decorating mishloach manot (food parcels) with US Chesed, and designing Purim cards. For those already involved, or who would like to sign up to the Yoni Jesner Award by taking part in volunteering opportunities, they will be able to record their hours online on the day on evolve, JLGB’s youth volunteering and skills initiative, which brings together all national achievement awards and qualifications available to Jewish young people across the UK. The evolve online platform will help to support your child’s volunteering, develop their sense of community and identity, to learn new transferable skills and gain the recognition they deserve. JLGB’s fantastic and groundbreaking government-backed National Citizen Service (NCS) programme is the ideal way for any student in Years 11 and 12 to spend their summer. For just £50 (including all accommodation, food and travel) this three-week life transformational
26
experience has become a rite of passage across the UK. JLGB offers the only kosher and faith-friendly version of NCS for the community. Be sure to also visit the JLGB stand in the charity zone to take advantage of one-off discounts for its summer camps, providing an amazing opportunity for children to develop while forging friendships with hundreds of others from across the UK and around the world. There is no better time to get involved in JLGB and, thanks to recent funding and plans to invest £5million in expanding its services, the youth organisation is excited to support even more young people in high quality youth programmes. Don’t miss out!

Help us help them Our four Rehabilitation Centres in Israel care for the complex physical and emotional needs of the 51,000 wounded IDF veterans for the rest of their lives. As Israel continues to defend itself and the number of wounded veterans continues to grow, the funding needs of the centres increase. Funding from supporters around the world enables Beit Halochem to continue on‑going programmes, develop new initiatives and purchase much needed equipment.

CELEBRATING
50 Years OF GIVING THE KEY TO INDEPENDENCE
THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL YEAR FOR JEWISH BLIND & DISABLED. It marks half a century since the charity was established to enable people from the age of 18 upwards who have physical disabilities or impaired vision, to live independently with the dignity and choice others take for granted. We are delighted to celebrate both the past and the future at The Big Family Show & Expo. Unfortunately, one in five people in the UK find themselves facing the impact of a diagnosis of a disability or vision impairment whether through illness, an accident or age. Over the past 50 years our specialist state-of-the-art developments of one and two bedroom mobility apartments, with their many special features and support on site and on call 24/7, have transformed the lives of thousands of people who found themselves in this position. And we are currently looking forward to welcoming yet more new tenants when our latest development of 19 apartments, the Dyna & Fala Weinstock Wing, opens later this year. When someone moves into one of our buildings they don’t only move into their own apartment, they also move into a warm and welcoming community. A diagnosis of disability can leave someone feeling isolated and lonely. Moving into a Jewish Blind & Disabled development changes all that. Of course people can choose just to enjoy their privacy behind their own front door if they wish. But most prefer also to make the most of the very many clubs and activities, including celebrations of all the chagim, which take place regularly in the beautifully designed communal lounges and accessible gardens. However, as availability of these much sought after apartments is clearly finite, there are unfortunately many still struggling to cope in accommodation
unsuitable to their needs, often with no idea of the products and technologies that could make their lives so much easier. Now, for the first time in our 50 year history, we are able to use our unparalleled expertise to help people in this position too with the launch of our Independent Living Advisory Service. Jewish Blind & Disabled’s Independent Living Advisor will visit people living out in the community and make tailor-made recommendations that could make all the difference to their daily lives. And where specific aids are not affordable we may even be able fund their cost, with the recipient keeping them for as long as they are needed. So many people have no idea of the products and technologies that exist let alone which ones could make all the difference to their lives and to the lives of their families too. From simple aids like a ‘sock helper’ to more complicated technology such as a smartphone barcode reader providing real tine audio feedback – there are so many ways in which people’s independence can be maintained. And our Independent Living Advisor can now help them find, and possibly even fund, the products that could transform their lives.
