Vicky Lane with her partner Lisa Wise

WISE UP IN THE WOOD ONE OF THE GREAT JOYS (AND THERE ARE MANY) OF HAVING A DAUGHTER IS CHOOSING HER WARDROBE. Long before their daughters enter this world, mothers of girls are mentally colour-co-ordinating dresses and bibs while choosing hair clips for their forthcoming bald babies. But make the most of that pastel onesie because, in the blink of an eye, your little girl will be creating her own dress code as a ‘tween’ and that is when you will need Dress Wise. The shop – a welcome new arrival on Borehamwood High Street – is a haven for the parents of girls who are stuck in that awkward stage when children’s clothing is too cute and adult wear is inappropriate. “Not to mention the wrong size,” says Dress Wise co-owner Vicky Lane who, together with her business partner Lisa Wise, has brought a wealth of family retail experience to a store that young girls can’t wait to visit. “There are so few shops that cater for them,” Vicky continues. “The arm length in adult sizes is too long and the designs often far too risqué for a 12 or 13-year-old. But these girls also want to wear fashionable clothing that flatters, and that is what we offer.” One of the big attractions at Dress Wise is the American labels it stocks, which are not available anywhere else in London. So, if your daughter is a fan of SoNikki sweats or vintage inspired Flying Tomato separates, this is where they are hanging, along with designs by Dance & Marvel and En Crème. That the clothing at Dress Wise has made the shop the place to be on Friday after school delights Vicky and Lisa, but they also keep a close watch on the excited clientele. “We never allow a young customer to spend a lot of money on clothing without asking questions and offering to put it aside until they return with a parent,” says Vicky. “We have teenagers of our own and want to respect parents’ wishes and look out for their daughters.” Shop owners with a moral conscience and Flying Tomato tops – your daughter will be impressed. Bargain Designs / Fashion, Health & Beauty

WD6’S BEST KEPT SECRET I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a bargain. Surely even the Queen and Victoria Beckham enjoy the thrill of a serious discount, not that they would ever actively seek one out. But that doesn’t stop the rest of us, hence my excitement at the discovery of David Oliver’s designer outlet at the end of my road. To be more precise, it is just beyond Morrisons and Smart car showroom on Stirling Way, which may not be an obvious place to look for a designer dress at a tenth of the price, but where you will find it. There, among the rails of designer bargains in David’s veritable Aladdin’s cave in Borehamwood. Those who formerly frequented his shops in Baker Street, The Galleria in Hatfield and Woodside Park will have fond memories of the cut-price German, Italian and French labels they bought there and probably still hang in their wardrobes. Knowing a Ribkoff from a Ronen Chen has kept David in fashion retail for longer than he can remember and he understands that most women are not perfect size zeros, but still want to look glamorous. Shopping for the perfect gown at an affordable price has become tricky as we are stuck between the uncertainty of buying on the internet or facing the hideous prospect of trawling the rails of TK Maxx without any help. This is not the case at David Oliver. Attentive sales assistants who know the stock will show you around and make suggestions. Not in a pushy way, but more in the spirit of ‘you wouldn’t want to miss this’. And you would be crazy to do so, with dresses in all hues and colours for all occasions nestled between silk tops, leather jackets and perfect fit French trousers. David tipped me off on the line of jeans he had in stock for curvier girls and, at their price, I couldn’t resist them. Cut price and close to home....I’m guessing I’ll see you there. Fashion, Health & Beauty / That is my dress

GET BEAUTIFUL IN BELGRAVIA There may be a wedding on the horizon, a barmitzvah just months away or a black tie occasion looming, but whatever the event you want your dress to be memorable. Even if you opt for something in black, it mustn’t blend in with all the other LBDs – and that requires the red carpet flair of a designer such as Nevena Nikolova. Based in SW1, Nevena has been creating pieces for A- listers, brides and international clients since she founded her label with her brother in 2001. Prior to that, she was a linguist, which is extremely useful when you are dressing women across the globe. Inspired and taught by her dressmaking mother– “the most spectacularly dressed woman in our town”, the Bulgarian designer is akin to a celebrity herself in her homeland, where her skill as a couturier is revered. This is now the case in Lodon’s Belgravia, where she makes bespoke gowns that do all the right things to flatter the wearer. “I am known for loving lace and I do,” says Nevena. “It is the most difficult and beautiful material to work with. One has to be quite clever to understand it and very skilled to handle its very specific technical nature.” And if lace isn’t the material used, then only the best fabrics are. “We make all our lining in silk, each zipper is made to order in Japan, and the pins are of the best quality of steel, long, thin and sharp. The finishing of every Nevena creation is spectacular, a piece of art on its own.” Trends are not an issue, as every outfit is individual and a new collection normally consists of 30 to 40 pieces each year. Currently, there is no pret-a-porter option to buy, as Nevena invests so much of herself in each gown there isn’t the time. “I will have to consider it one day but, if so, it has to make sense and make my clients and myself happy for all the right reasons,” she says. “My specialty is highlighting individuality and so I customise existing designs to capture that.” When it comes to her own wardrobe, Nevena is as versatile as her own designs. “I do wear all sorts of gowns, ranging from baby doll short, flared and playfully seductive, to long and dramatic evening gowns. To me, the feeling of wearing a big wonderful black brocade skirt, paired with a rather casual angora lace blouse is incomparable to anything else in evening wear.” This is worth remembering when choosing your next LBD. TEMPLE FORTUNE TEMPTS WITH TUAL

LINGERIE, SWIMWEAR AND NIGHTWEAR SPECIALIST

GOTTEX 10% DISCOUNT ON GOTTEX SWIMWEAR WITH THIS ADVERT. (One week only)

The ‘Save the Date’ arrives, you note it in your diary – and then you start planning what you’ll wear. Your husband suggests one of the outfits hanging in your wardrobe, but you aren’t listening as you’re already on your way to Tual for the wisdom of Altug Sezek. A graduate of Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion, Turkish-born Altug has a sixth sense when it comes to sourcing eveningwear. He trawls the world for the magnificent collection of cocktail and evening dresses that is on display in his boudoir-style boutique. The size of the store belies its content, as there are close to 500 dresses to choose from, displayed in colour order. The softest baby pink chiffon gives way to bold fuchsia satin, on to purple crepe, midnight blue organza, turquoise taffeta, red silk, green, gold, silver and then dependable black. Most pieces are full length, but there are ballerina and knee-length dresses too, as well as super-glam jumpsuits. The ethos is glamour, luxurious fabrics and expert structure; beautiful accent beading rather than full-on bling and a few very unusual pieces. Strapless, one-shoulder, short sleeves, long sleeves – there is something to suit all requirements of being covered up or exposed. And if you want it customised – this can be done, too. A heavily printed red and black flamenco-style dress with a hi-low skirt is a stand-out piece, although Altug cautions it’s not for everyone. A full-length figure-hugging crepe dress with fretwork on the skirt and leather trim offers a more edgy look, and I was really taken with a royal blue satin fifties-style dress with box pleats and beautiful black sequinned roses appliqued on the bodice and around the hem. Tual is the sole UK stockist for all the labels it carries, so there is no risk of someone else wearing the same dress as you. Now you just have to remonstrate with your husband. SIMPLE AND CHIC IN ST ALBANS Shopping is much more relaxed in a market town and as St Albans is nearer for many than the West End, there is every reason to take advantage of the proximity – notably at Simply French. With framed Vogue covers adorning the walls and antique furniture used to best effect, it isn’t a surprise to discover owner Lesley Ivinson is the epitome of elegance in a smart dress and Chanel-style jacket. This is everyday wear for Lesley, but not for the clientele she has attracted with her casual, comfortable clothing that has that inimitable French finish. Lesley’s customers are seldom out of trousers, but rely on the cut of labels such as Ficelle and Robell, which come straight to Hertfordshire from Paris. For spring 2017, Simply French is running the trouser gamut with everything from Capri pants to wider, pleated trousers and in all colours. Shirts and French cotton knitwear in soft pastels, tropical hues and black and white is also available and would be appreciated as a Mother’s Day gift. “French ready-to-wear clothing is our speciality,” says Lesley. “I also want to keep everything affordable and we have managed to do that in spite of Euro fluctuation.” Even more reason to head to Herts. The Way You Wear It / Fashion, Health & Beauty

STYLING KNOW-HOW IN NW11 In this minimalist, monochrome, modern world, a splash of colour is always welcome and this is just one of many reasons why visiting Mitch in NW11 is such a pleasure. A veritable cacophony of styles, colours and options in size 16 to 28 (there are some smaller sizes too) means that no woman need leave empty-handed. There is so much to choose from, and an unhurried, relaxed ambience makes the experience an absolute treat. Owner Denise has got the recipe absolutely right in her large, airy, well-stocked shop, and she and her staff have years of experience in dressing larger women for all occasions. Daywear, cruisewear, occasionwear and accessories (check out the fabulous new hat range and the stunning chunky jewellery) – it’s all there with enough of each to go round. Many lines are repeated and there is a year-round buy one get one half price offer on trousers. Unusually for a boutique, Mitch has a flexible returns policy, meaning that customers can take items home and get that all-important second opinion without having to drag in hubby/mother/daughter with them. Super-stylish herself (she has been in fashion forever), Denise really knows how to dress a larger lady and pull an outfit together. Customers return repeatedly because they have confidence in her and her buying choices. “I have a wonderful following of loyal customers and I buy with them in mind,” says Denise. “Women often pop in for one item and leave with two or three.” New for this season is a fabulous collection of linen and jersey by Israeli brand Alembika (exclusive to Mitch) in really stylish designs. Q’neel is a popular range always carried in the shop and, for occasions, there is Joseph Ribkoff (as seen on Jane McDonald on her cruising show on Channel 5) – fabulously smart, elegant black dresses or colourful printed jackets to make a real impact. IT’S GOING SWIMMINGLY Sorry ladies, the daffodils swaying on the roundabout green are a signal to pack up your coats and fur-lined boots and… try on that swimsuit. Some of us would rather take on a mountain of ironing than try on a cossie, as once you’re over 18 or over eight stone, the itsy bitsy teeny weeny from Primark isn’t going to work. But there is hope, as well as expert advice, wonderful service and a stunning collection of suitable swimwear at Leibergs in Temple Fortune. If you’re a bikini fan, there are gorgeous two-pieces to try, with brands such as Charmline and Sunflair jostling for space with Lidea and Maryan. There is a gorgeous range of styles and designs across the board. When it comes to swimsuits, Gottex is the Rolls-Royce and Leibergs’ bestselling brand. Available in bandeau, as well as with straps, the fabric, the structure and the cut all work together to make a super-flattering costume available in sizes 10 – 22. Most have a double lining, but there is a lightweight option (Gottex Profile) for those requiring less support. Clever patterns and ruching are designed to hide a multitude of sins and matching cover-ups do the rest. Miraclesuit goes even further when it comes to extra firm hold, claiming to make you lose 10 pounds in 10 seconds. Roidal is another brand worth looking at – its costumes are exquisitely beautiful in wonderful colours and look good enough to be worn under a jacket to go out for dinner. Once you’ve invested in a really good bikini or swimming costume, you need to look after it. “Never, ever put your swimwear in the machine,” says shop owner Frances. “It rots the elasticity and the underwires will come out. Handwash with gentle soap. The same applies to bras.” Leibergs is renowned for its serious bra fitting for all ages and sizes up to an I cup. No appointment is necessary and well-trained eyes with years of experience means that Frances and her staff know exactly how to make sure you’re well supported and comfortable in your bra. Of course, summer means T-shirt bras – of which there are plenty to choose from at Leibergs – and strapless bras, which are ever the challenge to source. Leibergs is stocking the new Chantelle silicone-free strapless bra, which has been brilliantly designed to stay in place without discomfort. Definitely worth checking out. BROWS (ER) UPDATE Permanent make-up restores the old you... only better, says Brigit Grant You can only write about beauty fads from a distance for so long before giving them a go yourself. This was not the case with the urchin haircut, fake braces or dyeing armpit hair, which briefly debuted as aesthetic fixes. But I was swept away by eyelash extensions. I was so distracted by women with long lashes on the tube that I missed my stop as they literally created a breeze when they blinked. They just looked so girlie and awake, which I discovered is one of the benefits when I got a set of my own. Lash application is a lengthy process, but beautician Kim Balaskas understands clients who are always in a hurry and fixed me up with a set of natural-looking extensions that specifically create thickness and in record time. With my lashes still batting, it was my brows that came to the fore this month as they were thinning and fading in different places (see top right and below). It wasn’t a good look and Kim also a permanent make-up specialist was desperate to restore my eyebrows. “It will make you look younger,” Kim said, which was enough to agree. Using my existing shape as the template, she pencilled the area and, once I approved it, set to work with her

specialist facial tattooing machine, which applies pigment to the skin using the finest needles. It doesn’t hurt (think energetic toothbrush), although contact with the sinuses on the brow bone did make my nose run. On completion and before showing me the results, Kim reminded me that the initial darkness would fade over the next two weeks and look more natural. It took an evening to adjust to them but, within a few days, I have come to appreciate my new brows. Defined, tidy, almost symmetrical and a perfect canopy for my lashes, I understand why permanent make-up is so popular. For anyone who feels their brows or lips have disappeared due to ageing and/or sun exposure, this is an opportunity to restore them and shed a few years. Think of it as repainting the front room with Kim as the decorator. Kim Balaskas, Permanent Make-Up and Beauty Clinic, Bickerton House, 25 Bickerton Road, Highgate N19 5JT. So how does one get a quality experience without heading to the top hotel spas ‘Up West’ and paying through the nose? The answer may lie in East Barnet where Ziba Beauty Salon (meaning ‘beautiful’ in Persian) is a mecca of calm run by the super-knowledgeable Maryam who worked in top salons and spas for discerning clientele in Dubai. “Ziba opened just over a year ago as we wanted to bring a ittle bit of high-end luxury to the high street for a very fair price.” With muted peach coloured walls and super-comfortable spa stations, you feel relaxed the minute you walk through the door. Senior beauty therapist Suzie brings 18 years of top-level beauty experience to Ziba. “We work with the best brands such as

DOCTOR’S ORDERS Dr Perricone is a genuine skin expert, so when he says cocoa has more antioxidants than blueberries, green tea, or red wine, it has to be true. But rather than eat it, the good doctor has created Cocoa Moisture Mask (£52) to sort out dryness, firmness and loss of radiance. Massaging the white microcapsules into your skin turns them brown, so you look edible, but your skin will be Galaxy smooth. A great guilt-free gift. Perricone MD’s Thio: Plex Intensive (£120) is another genius two-part product that has women raving about its ability to lift and brighten skin suffering from stubborn signs of ageing. The doctor’s brightening system is a detox, restorative agent in one tube and an antioxidant vitamin complex in the other that deals with lines, dark spots and discoloration. They are worth every penny for the noticeable changes. Dr Perricone even makes mascara that is an anti-ageing lash treatment with his Perricone MD No Mascara Mascara(£25 ). The lashes I’ve got with this wand are thicker and more lifted than with any other product.

The facial tool comes with the option to choose one of three creams that either brighten, rejuvenate or clarify with the help of the micro-pulsed vibrations that remove dead skin cells to give a healthy complexion. This skincare package will deal with acne, blackheads, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, sun damage and ageing skin. GOLDEN GIRLS

LIP IT I’ve loved Sleek MakeUP ever since trying them backstage at the MOBO Awards and their Matte Me lipstick range (£4.99) has three new shades for spring: Apricot Blooms, French Fancy and Crushed Lavender.

No one wants to start spring ashen-faced and St. Moriz Dry Oil Self Tanning Mist (£9.99) is non-greasy, smells unusually good and builds colour throughout the day. Better still is the St. Moriz Ultra Finish (£9.99), which has the scent of baby powder and goes on with a sponge to create airbrushed matte bronze skin instead of Trump orange.

Boots, Superdrug and sleekmakeup.com

Available at Superdrug

I’ve also been an advocate of Burts Bees’ natural products. Along with sorting out chapped lips, the company has moved into glorious colour with a 100% natural lipstick range (£9.99) which has great names such as Russet River and Ruby Ripple and they condition your smackers with moringa oil, raspberry seed oil and mimosa flower wax. The company also does colour crayons, which are equally good for your lips. Available at Burtsbees.co.uk, John Lewis and Feelunique.com

SOAKING Ordinarily, a bath oil wouldn’t get a mention, but Olverum (from £26) is the exception because you will emerge from the water with the sort of skin you never thought you’d feel again. Yes, it’s that soft. A Mother’s Day must, available at Liberty, Harvey Nichols, Conran and houseoffraser.co.uk

LUSHES LASHES I am still addicted to the eyelash extensions, but I also look after my own with RapidLash Serum (£39.99) and RapidShield Daily Conditioner (£28) after noting they got the best beauty reviews. The serum noticeably strengthens lashes against breakage and stimulates growth with its various proteins and vitamins, while the conditioner is for people who want to improve the elasticity and keeps the moisture in their lashes so they look a hundred times more luscious. Available at Boots and rapidlash.co.uk

RIGHT IMPRESSION FRANCINE LEWIS is used to making an impression – indeed, as an impressionist, she does many of them. But now the Britain’s Got Talent participant – who blew away judges with her impersonations of Cheryl Cole, Stacey Solomon, Katie Price and others – aims to make a different sort of impression as she launches First Impressions, her own make-up brand consisting of a strobing kit. It includes three palettes to create a highlighting effect to define cheekbones and illuminate the face for a more defined sculptured look. Francine, who has always been a big fan of make-up and takes great pride in her appearance, has also designed a variety of lipsticks and a perfumed body spray. It was the 41-year-old actress, model and TV presenter’s passion to one day develop and create a make-up brand. Having appeared on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in 2013 and continued on her tour and TV work, various make-up artists have helped her to achieve her look before she learned how to do it herself. Francine’s line is expected to be launched next month. Alex Newman

BEAUTY TOOLS

OF THE TRADE A re-watch of classic films only serves to magnify the natural beauty of screen sirens such as Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, most notably in her role as ‘Cleopatra’. With plump lips, flawless porcelain skin and the most unique violet eyes, she was years ahead of the skincare game. As we approach Pesach, it seems apt to feature beauty brand ‘Opatra’, its name a clear nod to the Egyptian Queen. Offering salongrade beauty devices for personal home use, Opatra are flawlessly leading the way in clever design and innovative technology in a booming industry. ‘Sonic’ devices have been around for some time now, but it’s only recently that the market has really picked up on them, especially home-use versions. “It’s all about devices,” says Company Director Israeli-born Effy Salhov. “People want that salon-finish in their own home and that is what our brand is about. We’ve created fun, tactile products that actually work and give professional results.” Simple, elegant and portable, Opatra devices are produced in Israel to the highest quality and come with a lifetime warranty. The products themselves are not just for women – men can benefit from them too - and are particularly appealing if you’re not quite ready for invasive treatments such as botox and fillers. Their ground breaking device called the ‘DermiSonic’ is similar in appearance to a mens’ electric razor. This clever tool is an anti-ageing and skin repairing device based on galvanic ultrasonic treatment, massage and LED light therapy. In English? It’s a 3-in-1 magic wand that sits ergonomically in your hand and amongst many other properties, can give you a non-surgical facelift, rid you of dead skin and revitalise skin cells. In a nutshell, you glow. All of the devices work with your chosen facial cream and activate a its’ benefits beyond what

Debbie Collins roadtests devices that give you a salonfinish in your own home

basic fingertip application is capable of. The simplicity ofOpatra devices means that there are no plugs or fiddly chargers – just a USB cable or a battery. This is certainly true of the ‘DermiEye’ device which I ‘m roadtesting. Run on an AAA battery, it’s a unique tool which works on ‘smart sensors’ that cleverly activate over 200 pulses per second as soon as it touches the eye area. Not an on/off button in sight. It’s super sleek, highly portable and you can even use it in the car whilst waiting at school pick-up. The DermiNeck device works on smart vibration technology to help relax neck lines and firm up the skin – less gobble-gobble, more goddess-goddess. Looking a little like a whale’s tale, you simply choose your setting, apply preferred neck cream and glide the ‘tail’ over your skin. As seen with the DermiSonic, clever tri-colour settings ensure a foolproof way to select your chosen feature. Most recently launched is the DermiPores product, designed to open and close facial pores using a hot and cold vibrating massager and tighten muscles. Cleopatra is within your sights. www.opatra.com

Yes, back in January when I realised my love handles were more like love shelves I decided to commit wholeheartedly to The Laboratory. No more sitting on the sofa watching Scarlett Mofatt’s fitness dvd for me. I would brave all weathers to get to Mill Hill and be first on the crosstrainer before jogging into the studio for 45 minutes of Schwinn Cycling with Louise or Sphinx who does it in the dark on a Sunday. In my head I pictured the ultimate physical transformation scenario with me rocking that treadmill dressed in something clingy by Rita Ora while other Lab members yelled “Look at that tuchas” with envy. When that happens I’ll let you know as I have struggled to stay on the path of good intentions and find the Lab’s cafe more inviting than 15 reps on the Pull Down. I also use work, parenting, dog-walking and FaceBooking as legitimate excuses not to show up at the gym, which is daft because when I get there I have a seriously good time. After all The Lab is a social soiree with smoothies that is open day and night. It also calms me down the moment I cross the threshold with its taupe decor, smell of spa oil and smartly-dressed receptionists whispering “good morning”. Trust me the sense of wellbeing extends all the way to the changing rooms. Upstairs amidst the challenging equipment it is still relaxed, but sweating is encouraged. I only have to look at a rowing machine to perspire, so imagine how drenched I get doing Body Combat with Chi. As the name suggests this is not a class for the fainthearted as Chi blends the moves of Lucy Liu in Kill Bill with the athleticism of Crouching Tiger warriors and expects you to follow suit. At times she literally freezes in mid-air while jumping which is a cinematic skill worth emulating. Truth is anything is possible at The Lab as their no-judgement philosophy is very nurturing and the trainers set achievable goals. They are also wise beyond their years as I discovered recently talking to Lab trainer Tony about my dreams of a better body to which he replied “You must focus on being healthy and remember it’s who you are on the inside that matters most.” See you at The Lab.

DO YOU WANT HAIR? If the answer to this question is yes, then Janis Levy can help. Here she explains how her family company can change your life

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS one notices about a person’s physical appearance is their hair. Long, short, curly or straight our locks identify us, so when we lose them we want helpful solutions – the expert kind. Enter Hair Development. Our history began in the 1960s when my father Stanley Levy bought some wig making equipment from Adolf Cohen in Whitechapel

for five pounds and a 1930s Art & Craft hairdressing manual. From this Hair Development was launched and it remains the longest running hair replacement business in the UK and the only Extensions Company recommended by The Trichological Society. As a trained hairdresser who worked in Knightsbridge and Paris, opening premises on Mile End Road may have seemed incongruous, but Stanley understood what clients coping with hair loss needed whether it was due to chemotherapy, alopecia or simple aesthetics. Fifty five years on and Hair Development continues to cover all forms of non-surgical Hair Replacement for the public as well as creating fabulous wigs and tresses required for characters in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings. Miss Piggy has us to thank for her first bouffant and Margaret Thatcher for her glamorous ‘do’ in Spitting Image. Though we provide celebrities with beautiful hair extensions in countless produc-

Ethical, honest and steadfastly devoted to the industry my father remains as CEO and with his nephew Mark Burns as Managing Director, they are steering Hair Development from strength to strength. And I now work alongside them, having given up my career as a model and actress during which time I acquired iconic notoriety as the Cadbury’s Flake Girl. While working for NBC in Hollywood , I was one day transformed on set into an exotic brunette, courtesy of Hair Development. Thousands of miles from home and my father was still doing my hair! Having worked in the industry and seen the benefits of hair enhancement – albeit just for television – I know what clients need, and as the Creative Director of the company 020 8457 3300 I can make it happen. After all I have learnt from the best. Whatever your hair predicament, Hair Development is here to provide solutions with confidential consultations. PURE MAGIC If you are heading to Eilat any time soon, please go and see beautician Gail Schneider at the Dan Hotel and tell her I sent you. As the owners of the Wow Brow Studios in Israel and Miami, Gail and her sister Dari have turned eyebrow shaping into an art form and developed a signature facial. They also created Magic Serum which is one of the finest skincare products I’ve ever used because it is a moisturiser for day and night as well as a primer and neck cream. Imagine that, a single bottle to replace all the targeted tubes and pots crowding your bathroom. Being married to a hotelier means Gail relocates every few years which gives her the opportunity to share her make-up tips and demonstrate the value of the serum which lasts for months. Celebs and models stock up when passing through as it is currently only available to buy in Miami or Eilat. www.wowbrows.net Brigit Grant

GET YOUR LEGS GORGEOUS Highgate Hospital can help those who want to hide their pins when the sun comes out Summer is on its way, and with it that big wardrobe changeover to shorts, skirts and sandals. Smiles all round except for those suffering from varicose vweins. One in three people get them at some point, but that doesn’t make sufferers feel any better. Varicose veins are largely hereditary, but can also come from pregnancy, ageing, gaining weight, a job that requires you to stand for prolonged periods and from DVT. Some people find them painful, and severe varicose veins can cause leg ulcers or blood clots. The answer is to close the offending veins down so that the blood is forced to flow through your healthy veins. “These days the majority of patients are treated with a minimally invasive approach using local anaesthetic techniques,” says Paul Flora, vascular surgeon at Highgate Hospital. “This means the surgery can be a walk in and walk out procedure associated with less pain and a quicker recovery into normal activities. We also know that this targeted treatment is far more effective with far lower chances of recurrence than the stripping surgery offered previously.’ At Highgate Hospital there are various

treatments, all of which are minimally invasive. They are carried out under local anaesthetic and sessions are relatively quick (usually around an hour). Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical into the veins which makes them close up and fade away. EndoVenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT) is a laser treatment which destroys the vein walls. Larger veins may need a ‘foam’ version of the chemical and several sessions, or Venefit™ therapy, which is direct heating of

the vein wall with microwaves to close it down. Highgate Hospital is also offering a new ‘Glue’ treatment where the failed vein is filled with glue through a fine catheter in order to irritate its walls and cause it to seal off.

There is currently a special offer on varicose vein treatments at Highgate Hospital. Contact the hospital for details at Highgatehospital.co.uk 17-19 View Rd, Highgate, London N6 4DJ 020 8341 4182
