The anniversaries of much-loved movies and TV shows provides a useful theme for spring/summer fashion, according to Brigit Grant BRACE YOURSELF because on 16 June Grease the movie will be 40 years old! That’s right, the film that had every young guy longing to be T-Bird and date a Pink Lady has reached a Ruby celebration and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny (John Travolta) are now collectively 133 years old. If you are one of those women who, in 1978, tried to squeeze into the black spray-on satin trousers Sandy wore in the You’re The One That I Want finale, you’ll know it’s a look that has never gone out of fashion, but the 1950s Capri pants in the shops now are easier to get on. Sandy’s off-the-shoulder top and hoop earrings will get any girl through a long hot summer and we’re all still “hopelessly devoted” to that black leather (or faux) jacket, which remains a fixture in the seasonal offerings. As for the red mules, Manolo Blahnik is still a fan and has come up with his own version of Sandy’s shoes – the Fibiona – which will go with jeans or evening wear and should at that price.
THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEX AND THE CITY’S debut on 6 June (yesterday) is the ‘Mr Big’ one for fashion because the show was a game changer for sartorial inspiration, and Carrie Bradshaw’s style continues to influence every trend that hits the runway. From Carrie’s namesake necklace to her clash of colour combos, the show’s designer Patricia Field kept the show’s fans constantly on their Louboutin toes. Take a look at spring/summer collections and you’ll see Carrie everywhere, be it the essential yellow dress, the pastel suit or that little white summer dress. Over the top evening wear, spiky shoes and the bum bag are all Carrie and, although her friends Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were well-turned-out, it was the sassy columnist who wore huge flowers, newspaper print gowns and carried a crazy bag. Here’s to bringing a bit of Bradshaw into your fashion life this summer.

Louisa Walters meets the team behind Anoushka G
DREAM DRESSES
T
he first thing you notice when you walk into Anoushka G in Temple Fortune is how cool it is. I don’t just mean the temperature – although it was refreshingly cool on the hot day I visited – but the vibe. There’s none of the plush carpet, swags and tails, glitz and chintz usually associated with bridal and eveningwear shops. This is a spacious, airy, high ceilinged unit with dark cemento (shiny concrete to you and me) floor, modern chain-link chandeliers and well-spaced rails of beautiful, stylish, artistically designed and well-cut dresses.
All this cool nicely contrasts with the warmth of the people behind the brand. Husband-andwife team George and Anna have been in the eveningwear business for nearly 30 years and in bridalwear since 2004. As soon as you make their acquaintance you get the feeling that they really care, and will make sure you look and feel fabulous in your dress. Anoushka G in Temple Fortune is the only place where you can buy the Anoushka G brand. When you buy from here you are buying direct from the designer – the head of the fashion house – whether it’s off the peg, made to measure or bespoke. They make dresses for all

ages (starting at around 13). The eveningwear collection is being added to continuously while a new bridal range comes out three times a year. In eveningwear there’s a definite trend for blush and gold tones, plus interesting fabrics and detailing. Patterns are making a comeback – ranging from simple but striking designs in two colourways or full-on multi-coloured floral patterns created by beads and sequins. But for Anna it’s not about ‘fashion’ – it’s about making people feel happy. “Our first ever wedding dress was an adaptation of a black satin evening gown. A client fell in love with it and asked us if we could make it in white for her wedding day,” she says. Anna is still making a version of this same dress today. I saw it in white and another version in a beautiful rich deep cerise. There are wedding dresses in all shapes, but Anna is seeing less demand for the full princess look. “Dresses are becoming softer and less ‘gowny’ more romantic,” she says. “Fabrics are getting lighter - we use a lot of lace and silk chiffon which makes many of our dresses suitable for destination weddings.’ There is a core range of adult bridesmaid dresses – all similar but with noticeable design differences – available in eight colours, and also suitable for eveningwear. (I have one in red and it’s the most comfortable, easy-to-wear evening dress I have ever owned and it is fantastic value for money). There is something for everyone at Anoushka G. “We can fit the orthodox brides who need to cover up but don’t want to look frumpy. We have beautiful dresses designed particularly for this market, but they are so lovely that non-orthodox girls buy them too,” says Anna. “We can make the grandmother of the barmitzvah look glamorous. We have dresses a girl can wear for her batmitzvah or her prom. We can fit the bride, her mother, her grandmother and all her bridesmaids.”
Bridesmaid dresses start from under £200, evening wear from £395 (bespoke from £800), bridal from £1,400. There’s a range of veils, shoes and bags too. anoushkag.com anoushkaglondon Anoushka G. London

COOL AND THE GANG
Louisa Walters meets the #NoSweat team behind a revolutionary brand of much-needed nightwear
H
ot flushes. Two words that send chills through women of a certain age who then start to sweat. Doors are opened then closed, cardigans are on then off, and as for the misery of night sweats – don’t get me started. It was because of these shared ‘hot’ experiences that I joined a friend at a focus group to assess a new brand of nightwear for hot flushing women. Six months later, I was road (sleep) testing a pair of pretty, comfortable PJs that absolutely lived up to their promise to “wick away the sweat and give me back my nights’ sleep”. The women behind these PJs – and more – are north London ladies Eileen (originally from Vancouver) and Nancy, who met at the school gates 15 years ago and now their sons share a flat together. But I digress... Two years ago, the ladies were at a 50th birthday celebration in a hot country when conversation between the female guests turned to flushes, sweats and lack of a good night’s sleep. As party chat goes, it was not exciting, but it got Eileen and Nancy thinking all the way

home and that’s when they landed the idea for Cucumber Clothing. The company launched last September and marries great design with fabric innovation to create attractive sleepwear for menopausal women that takes away sweat and odours at speed so the wearer stays cool and dry. “It won’t stop the night sweats, but it does mean that the wearer can go straight back to sleep,” says Nancy. It took nine months to find the right fabric. “We tested several materials before we decided on the one that offered the best wicking properties combined with the softest hand feel,” says Nancy. “We import this material, but we manufacture in the UK. All the factories we work with treat their staff fairly and pay them well – for us it is important.” But the clothes are not just for menopausal women. “Once we had proved we had a product, we capitalised on the feedback from our customers and extended our jersey range with some loungewear pieces that are great for off-duty dressing, yoga and Pilates,” says Nancy. “We also decided to think about the travel market as the jersey range is great for long flights because it doesn’t crease, and because the material is thermo-regulating, the changing temperature in the cabin is not an issue.” Next came a ruffle range for holidays, which included the ruffle dress and it can be dressed up for a night out and then worn to bed. In just eight months, nearly 20 percent of customers have reordered. “We clearly are solving a problem for women,” adds Nancy.

HOMMEWEAR
Debbie Collins recommends a shop where men can enjoy fashion
AS A RULE MEN DON’T ENJOY SHOPPING. David Beckham probably does (Posh probably insists on it) but other blokes often show up at a shop and then leave empty-handed due to a poor selection or lack of guidance from staff. Of course, shopping is easy for men like Beckham with perfectly proportioned limbs who can buy off the peg without alterations. Sadly this is not the case for men with extra-long arms, super short legs and a neck to rival a large side of prime bola. Those guys need the sort of specialist help that is available at Boutique Homme in Golders Green. With the largest local selection of quality menswear this family-run business caters to the man about town who doesn’t want to go into town. But with ever-changing trends how does this shop stand proud on the high street? “My father opened the shop over 30 years ago and I eventually took over the reins,” says current owner Darren Magee. “Our customers know they can get
the very best range and service from us and I think that is what has kept people coming back.” Testament to their friendly and helpful service is the fact that Boutique Homme is serving the next generation of customers. “We now sell suits to the sons of the customers my dad served in the early days,” notes Darren. “They are men who care about their appearance and looking their best and we are able to give them the time and expertise they expect.” Boutique Homme suits start from £300 with their showcase Italian brand Canali. “We offer a full fitting and finish service with alterations carried out by our expert tailor. People have been known to come in for a suit and have it altered and ready in just a couple of days,” says Darren. Boutique Homme also stock jeans and shirts for a younger audience with 7 for All Mankind the key seller. Running the style gamut from super smart to uber casual with designs by Cerruti 1881, Profumo, Eton, Duchamp and Lagerfeld it is possible to build a full wardrobe or just get that perfect addition at Boutique Homme.
TRENDS FOR MEN in 2018 according to GQ The Eighties: Every guy’s style icon for next season? His dad, circa 1983. From pastel colours to boxy suit jackets and light wash jeans with frayed hems menswear silhouettes and shades from the Dynasty decade were on the catwalks in all three fashion capitals. Fendi mixed 80’s sportswear with tailoring and Cerruti paired square-cut jackets with cool loose trousers. Wear White: The trend is head to toe, but if that is too much add an indigo denim jacket or light, tailored navy blazer. For shoes, try smart black or brown leather sandals or penny loafers. Think Pink: No longer afraid to be seen in it, pink is still on trend and it is hot pink from Comme des Garcons and Billionaire. See Stripes: A variety of widths are on offer, from thick to pin, but you’ll be needing a stripe suit and the good news it is flattering on every guy no matter their body shape.

Fashion, Health & Beauty / Dame Esther and Rebecca Wilcox
THAT’S THEIR LIFE It’s rare for a Jewish daughter to get a word in, let alone run the show. But Rebecca Wilcox gets to on tour with her mother, Esther Rantzen. Brigit Grant met them
D
ame Esther Rantzen doesn’t shy away from impertinent questions. She positively revels in them. “The journalist who just left asked if I had any health problems or memory loss?” chirps a beaming Esther, inviting me into her Hampstead apartment. “Having reached the age of 75, she seemed to assume that I would, but I had to disappoint her.” For those, such as myself, who have treasured Esther’s contribution to television over the past 50 years, her state of fine fettle can only be a good thing, along with her svelte figure, which women of all ages must envy. “You just saw me eating a croissant with jam,” says Esther, dismissing any notion that she has deprived
herself of food to be TV slim (it adds 10 lbs) for five decades. “She understands when she is hungry, eats and then stops which I have never been able to do as I have no appestat,” admits Rebecca Wilcox, Esther’s 38-yearold daughter and sidekick/inquisitor on the That’s Life UK Tour. With their sizable TV experience as consumer journalists and presenters, this mother and daughter duo make for a formidable team, with Rebecca firing questions, but in truth it is really the audience who ask the tricky stuff when the women appear on stage and tell all. “I’ve always loved a live audience – That’s Life was done in a television theatre – for their unpredictability,” replies Esther. “This tour also

gives me a chance to be with my daughter as we both have busy lives, but this is contractual and so we have to turn up together.” Rebecca laughs and acknowledges that spending time with mum and appearing for one night only in “the most gorgeous theatres” is not really hard work. And it would be less so if Esther stuck to the format. “I wrote a script that ties in with answers mum gave in my preparatory interviews. But on the road, she gives a different answer every bloody time, so my perfectly constructed archive material, with clips from That’s Life, is not always seen. But she’s brilliant at keeping me on my toes and I’m finding out so much more about her.” A lot of the new finds are generated by the audience Q&A, which “could go horribly wrong”, but hasn’t yet. “There are people who’ve come who know my life better than I do,” says Esther, who is memorably the face of That’s Life and founder of Childline, but also counts appearances in I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! Strictly Come Dancing and even First Dates as career bullet point and, more importantly, her happy marriage to the late documentary maker Desmond Wilcox. “The point of doing this was to look back at what we’ve both done and offer candid insight into our family life, so there are questions about characters people remember from That’s Life, notably the talking dog, to me getting arrested for offering the public bat soup. There have also been some bewildered tourists who’ve come with a friend and don’t know who I am. They are great fun.” No-go subjects for Esther and Rebecca are sex and Brexit. “Sex because any mention of it in connection with her mother makes my daughter throw up,” sighs Esther. “And Brexit because it almost caused the break-up of the little group of friends I dine with on a regular basis in northwest London. Brexit made these distinguished people of a certain age throw themselves across
tables in order to seize each other by the throat. I read an article that summed it up perfectly with the headline – ‘The People Who Didn’t Vote The Way I Voted Are Much Less Intelligent.’ ” While our future in Europe may be off the table, Esther will talk knowledgeably about sexual harassment and the BBC equal pay row as a veteran broadcaster who got to be on screen at the Beeb when most women were either secretaries or researchers. “ I’m pleased to say it is now very difficult to put a current affairs programme together that doesn’t have a strong female input on and off camera,” notes Esther. “But we have to be careful, because when one looks at the children doing least well, it is white working class boys; so we can’t let the pendulum swing too far in any one direction. We need to use our common sense so everyone gets a chance.” With her Jewish background, which was explored on BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?,

Dame Esther and Rebecca Wilcox / Fashion, Health & Beauty
Above: The late Desmond Wilcox with Rebecca and, right, on her wedding day
the asking of religious questions very much depends on where Esther and Rebecca are appearing. “They do ask about me being an agnostic, but I’m a Jewish agnostic,” says the woman who is a member of two shuls (LJS in St John’s Wood and West London because of Dame Julia Neuberger). For Rebecca, it’s a little more complicated. “And more so for my poor confused son, who has a Jewish mother, a Catholic father and goes to a C of E school where they have a Jesus corner. I told him Jesus was a great Jewish man, but my son insists he is nothing – as in without faith. But he knows his mummy is Jewish and he likes it when we sing Jewish songs, plus his favourite food is matzah.”
“But Benji is only five!” chips in Grandma Esther, who has four other grandchildren. Rebecca, who has a brother, Joshua, and sister, Miriam, originally wanted to be an actress, but read English at Oxford before going into TV as a producer. “There was never ever a time when I didn’t want to do it. But I would tell people that I wanted to be a documentary maker like my father because I thought it sounded better, but what I really wanted was to run the world like my mother.” Anecdotes about her late father arise only if there’s an audience question, but Desi is very present in the art in her mother’s apartment. “After 18 years, it is still a painful subject for me,” says Rebecca. “We don’t grieve for him and he is a point of happiness in our lives, but it is just so sad.” Describing herself as the archetypal Jewish mother forever tied to her children, Esther is
still on a mission and founded The Silver Line, the UK’s only free, confidential 24-hour helpline for vulnerable and isolated people aged 55 and over. With the same commitment to campaigning that she gave to Childline, Esther has now sought the help of charities, organisations and individuals who offered their support and expertise to a neglected demographic. Fiercely protective of her mother, Rebecca can’t resist attacking trolls on Twitter who insult her. “When I was little, my great uncle Max told me that when someone brilliant and successful puts their head above the parapet people want to chop it down – and you must never listen to what they say. So I don’t. Unless it’s a stupid troll.” I leave Esther and Rebecca talking about fashion. Evidently, Esther is a wonderful
shopping companion – until her daughter spots something she likes. “Then she tells me it doesn’t suit me and tries it on herself.” “That only happened once,” retorts the Dame. “I think you’ll find it was more,” says Rebecca. “Remember that Katie Holmes jacket reduced from £900 to £90 in Selfridges sale?” “Oh, yes,” says a sheepish Esther. “It’s one of my favourites.” All evidence suggests this is a Jewish mother and daughter act you won’t want to miss. • That’s Life UK Tour is at Alban Arena in St Albans on Thursday, 14 June, at 8pm. Fashion, Health & Beauty / Summer Sorted
IT’S ALL ABOUT I LOVE SUMMER but seriously miss the cover-up benefits of winter clothing, says Brigit Grant. Anything could be going on under a big jumper, long skirt and heavy boots, but there is no place to hide in a diaphanous silk dress or beach playsuit. Regretting every Friday night kneidel and Sunday salmon bagel, I now face the annual task of trying to shift the kine-ahora curves before the B-Day landing (that’s B as in Beach). Fortunately, every other woman is thinking the same thing, including the skinny ones who won’t even sniff a Danish before Spain. “Oi, have I piled on the pounds!” they say struggling to fill their size 6 Seven jeans as they divide a falafel between four. But it’s all relative and mine like their food, which is why I have to try everything to avoid the walk of shame in a kaftan.
THE DOWNSIZING DRINKS One swallow does not a summer make, but it does if you’re drinking Skinny Coffee Club. The Skinny Coffee Club drinkers appear regularly on Facebook proudly displaying their inch loss in denim shorts, but so far I can only tell you that it tastes really good from the comfort of a onesie. Like all weight-loss drinks, Skinny Coffee (it’s kosher friendly) comes alongside a flexible eating and exercise plan which one is encouraged to follow. The drink which comes in a stylish brown envelope pouch contains lots of fat-busting ingredients including green tea extract to increase metabolism, garcinia A skinny coffee clubber cambogia to reduce appetite - and acheiver super food spirulina. To lose up to a stone in 28 days requires the consumption of two cups a day with coconut or almond milk if you don’t like it black and sticking to a healthy diet. I’ve been back at the gym since I started the coffee, but have not been entirely dedicated to the drink. I do however know someone who dropped 16lbs in a month, so it can be done and I will update you in September. www. skinnycoffeeclub.com Not drinking enough water is an issue for many, but it is required in the Maxislim BerryTrim mix which is a good thing. Also kosher-friendly, this food supplement which contains high strength Glucomannan has been dubbed the ‘gastric band in a glass’but the pleasantly fruity drink just makes you feel full enough not to stop the snacks. As with Skinny Coffee I have not been strictly committed to the cause , but the reviews by Wafflemama and other diet bloggers have been very positive when they combined it with the right food and exercise. (£29.95 for 42 servings at good health stores. www.healtharenaproducts.com
ABS (ENCE) MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER I didn’t realise how much I had missed The Laboratory Gym in Mill Hill until I was lying on a mat last week with resistance bands around my thighs praying for the Core Fusion class to end. Welcoming, swish and calm, The Lab is an oasis of possibility where the classes inflict pain, but next day’s muscle aches prove they work. If only I’d slept at The Lab through the winter months and eaten at their healthy café, there would be less of me. www.millhilllab/spa.co.uk
GET TREATMENT If all else fails, there are non-surgical treatments that can sort out your shape and Accent Prime is one of the best. I’m still on a trial, so nothing to show yet, but it’s possible to get your skin tightened and body contoured in a lunchtime. Using radiofrequency (RF) which is delivered via rapid “in motion’’ technology directly to the tissue, the rotation generates friction which produces powerful and effective heat that causes contraction, stimulating the formation of new collagen to tighten and firm the skin on the chosen area. It also delivers ultrasonic waves that destroy fat cells and helps improve cellulite. A course of six treatments are recommended for best results at Courthouse Clinics in Watford or Wimpole Street where the beauticians are informed. I’m very hopeful and will report back. courthouseclinics.com

THE BEACH POUR ON CREAM The pounds may still be there, but you can smooth and tone the bumps with some serious creams including: Revitalizing Lifto-Firm Body by QMS Medicosmetics which is a contouring cream that contains an ingredient complex of bitter orange and caffeine in natural oils to shape, tone and lift body contours. (£68 from QMS Medicosmetics salons and Liberty, London. It’s the slimming properties of brown seaweed extract and Menthol that makes Dr. Ceuticals Tummy Tone an effective gel which works a directly on the causes of retained fat to help minimise the appearance of love handles aka cholla rails. BEAUTY EXTRAS We wax and lazer ourselves into hairless submission, but now and again it’s cue the razor. FFS (Friction Free Shaving) is the only shaving subscription service in the world that’s exclusively for women. It launched in November 2015 as a challenger brand to make bespoke women’s shaving products that challenge low quality, plastic women’s razors. FFS offers three razors, ‘Frankie,’ ‘Silvia’ and ‘Rose’ at £5 or £9 a month (P&P included). In box one members receive a bespoke metal handle and four blades, and every month after that they are sent four replacement blades – meaning they can be changed once a week. FFS also recently launched a luxurious shave cream and has further products launching later this year. www.ffs.co.uk When discussing skin and aging, collagen is the focus, but elastin plays an equally important role in keeping us looking young. Sure, collagen provides the firmness, but elastin gives it its elasticity and the ability to rebound when pinched or pulled. You know what bubbahs are like around cheeks. Chlorella inhibits the elastase enzyme, which breaks down elastin and Sun Chlorella stands out from the other products because they use a DYNO®-Mill process, which breaks down the cell walls of the algae (without the use of heat or chemicals which can reduce the quality of the chlorella) to ensure their products retain the most nutrients possible. It’s a skin saving purchase. www.sunchlorella.co.uk or health stores nationwide. Sun Chorella (£50) New scents for summer include Daisy Dream Marc Jacobs Twinkle Edition – which may just be a limited edition fragrance, but by all accounts this reinterpretation of the classic Daisy Dream perfume transports you to a beautiful place with endless blue skies, sparkling sunshine and flowers blooming everywhere. An airy blend of lush florals and juicy black cherries, it’s almost a desert. (£29.99 The fragranceshop.co.uk). Aqua Manda was the scent that captured the spirit of the late 60’s and is one of four perfume that have been reissued because they were missed. Black Rose from the 1950s, Babe from the 1980s and Tribe a la 1990s are the others you can spray on nostalgically depending on your age. I was a Charlie/Rive Gauche kind of girl, but I’m liking the tang of oranges and enlightenment in Aqua Manda. (£39.99 www.aquamandaperfume.com and selected stores) Salt, sea and sun take their toll, but not with Fillerina Lip Volume 3, an awardwinning, revolutionary lip plumping and hydrating product. You won’t need lipstick (though this is a great primer) as the hyaluronic acids in Fillerina really plump up the tissue and keep lips moist. This really makes a visible difference and use it for one month to see the best results. (£75.00 at Marks and Spencers and www.marksandspencer.com)
Dr Ceuticals Sculpting Cellulite Treatment targets cellulite with its Red Algae and cooling Menthol massaged into thighs, buttocks and waist every night for three months, so I should’ve started in February. (£19.99 at Boots). Off the shelf and familiar Palmer’s have just launched a new Skin Firming Lotion in their Coconut Oil Formula range which smells of summer and contains Sea Weed extract which helps ease fluid retention, boosts elasticity and tones skin. Great for giving sparkle to skin that has been hidden all winter and needs hydrating. (7.99 from Boots or Superdrug). A lotion that promises to improve skin elasticity within ten days and comes with endorsements from my mother and Meghan Markle has to be the answer. “I use NIVEA Q10 Body lotion religiously” Meghan told Beauty Banter before they added vitamin C and she married Harry. At only £8.49 from Boots you’ll be beach ready for royalty. Finally if you can’t shift it invest in some figure shaping swimwear. I tried on the Miraclesuit in a size below and it really did shapes and streamline the tummy. The tag line is look 10 pounds lighter in 10 seconds, which sounds like a lot less work.

DEBBIE COLLINS WENT TO… STANMORE-BASED SOLITAIRE BEAUTY SOLITAIRE has been primping and preening local ladies (and gentlemen) before it became fashionable to nip in for threading on your lunchbreak. Now Solitaire in Whetstone has merged with the Stanmore salon where there is a huge menu of treatments including the highly effective CACI Synergy facials, which uses tiny electrical signals to boost muscle tone and skin tissue resulting in improved skin tone, texture and face shape. Jennifer Lopez loves it, but on their social media pages Solitaire highlight hat it’s also a great treatment for men. From a simple manicure to laser hair removal or an indulgent paraffin pedicures which leaves your feet silky smooth, Solitaire will get you sorted. It might be a subtle brow tint to create brow definition after one of their expert therapists threads your brows or lash extensions so there is no more messing about with mascara on holiday. This treatment takes an hour or so, with individual lashes applied, which with care, can last for up to three or four weeks before any maintenance is required. For the less daring, there is the option of a ‘lash lift’ and tint, where lashes are tinted and then curled to give the illusion of fullness. Solitaire also have their own-range of skin products including a coconut oil which is addictive, but you will have to go there to try it and a treatment.

Spa Turn/ Fashion, Health & Beauty SARA MORRIS WENT TO… BERNARDITA’S BEAUTY SALON IN WEST HAMPSTEAD From the moment I entered BERNARDITA it felt like I was in a little haven. Comfortable doesn’t begin to describe it and then there was the bed – heated – and so instantly relaxing. With summer ahead I was there to tackle all the negative effects of winter with a Belnatur facial which is very special. To give you an idea it involves a mask using an infra red light, exfoliation with vitamin C for wrinkles, and a lift with collagen which is applied to hydrate the skin with oxygen (Hyaluronic Acid). Bernardita used a high-frequency machine with Citoline Elastine oxygen and to finish, well I was in my element as the finale was a gorgeous face and neck massage. After my facial I looked like a new person. Bernardita was charming throughout and I left with the sort of glow you would normally get from a fortnight on the Riveria.

ALEX GALBINSKI WENT TO… AKASHA SPA AT THE CAFÉ ROYAL IN PICCADILLY
Just walking into the AKASHA HOLISTIC WELLBEING CENTRE gives rise to a straightening of the shoulders, the slowing down of breath, and the reawakening of the senses. It’s not a coincidence; there is a quote in its brochure: “The moment you relax, you are in the present. Relaxation is going beyond time – no past, no future.” I certainly relaxed at Akasha, the three floor well-being centre attached to the fivestar Hotel Café Royal, located just by Piccadilly Circus which back in March, introduced an exclusive range of spa treatments by wellbeing experts, Aromatherapy Associates. Treatments from this British brand combine traditional healing therapies and massage techniques using therapeutic oil blends with rich natural essences, along with affirmations and mindful actions to enhance well-being. The geranium scent filling the urban underground retreat was light and delicate, as was the infusion of turmeric, mint and ginger that the chef makes each morning to a secret recipe (a shame, as I’d have liked to attempt a recreation at home). There are eight Aromatherapy Associates treatments that look after face and body as well as promoting general well-being. I chose
the We Relax (60 minutes £150), with the light relax oil blend. Massage movements are focused on the back, scalp, face, neck and shoulders, and any (or rather, many) knots created by sitting hunched over a laptop were gently but firmly teased out by Jenny, my therapist, during the hour-long session. Taking deep breaths and repeating affirmations as she instructed helped me feel centred and mindful. I was not running through all the remaining errands on my to-do list; I was present in the treatment room, one of nine in the intimate spa. Jenny gave me a card with the following affirmation to take away: “As I breathe, I smile and I relax”. It suggested I try to smile internally as well as externally, so the body can release feel-good chemicals that work to make one happier and more positive. Akasha (a Sanskrit word meaning ‘the essence of all things’, based on the four elements of nature: earth, fire, water and air) is also home to one of London’s only Watsu pools (where the gentle body therapy is performed in warm water), an 18-metre swimming pool, a 300 sq metre gym and a private hammam. It also offers Valmont treatments and exclusive Vichy Shower experiences, as well as classes such as yoga, Pilates, boxing and cardio, and the lounge bar serves fresh and nutritious dishes comprising the four elements. Akasha takes a holistic approach to looking after its guests and I definitely left feeling a lot less harassed than when I arrived. DAD’S DAY Mother’s Day is never an issue when it comes to gifts, but dads are a different matter. With D.Day (Sunday 17 June) in just over a week, it may be time to stare at your father’s face. Does he look tired and grey? Are the bags under his eyes more like holdalls? And have his smile lines become deep furrows? If any of this applies to your pater’s visage, why not get him a Cetuem Facial? Before you scoff at the notion, Cetuem Founder Andria Vassiliou has four sons and her husband John is a cosmetologist who makes all of the products, so she knows a lot about the perils of male skin and how it gets neglected. “Women don’t think twice about having a facial, but men are reluctant to invest in skincare or appreciate how they can turn back time with exfoliation and regular moisturising,” says Andria who counts Amanda Holden and Ingrid Tarrant as Cetuem customers.
With 45 years experience, the jewel in the crown is the SCR Gold Collagen Rejuvenation Facial (£95)which purifies and hydrates the skin and the collagen plumps out fine lines and lessens deeper ones. It is also good for those dads who suffer with acne or breakouts. CETUEM are offering JN readers a 20% discount on a Father’s Day facial in Harley Street or their HQ in Southgate. ALL ABOARD FOR GIVING A round up of the charity’s achievements, goals and pop-up success

ith so many charity shops on every high street, knowing what each one represents and contributes to has never been more important. While most are dedicated to a single cause, funds raised by All Aboard are distributed to multiple charities and benefit many. Chief executive Alan Haynes would like to feature them all to show how All Aboard has helped, but he is starting out with Spread A Smile. “It’s a brilliant and amazing charity that I was introduced to by its co-founder Josephine Segal,” enthuses Alan. “The charity’s mission is simple; to brighten the days of

They do this by sending entertainers – fairies, magicians, singers, artists, face painters and therapy dogs into five London hospitals visiting more than 5,000 young people every year.” Josephine explains: “We help to spread smiles and laughter at a time when these young people and their families need it most. “Because of All Aboard’s support, Spread A Smile was able to make an extra eight hospital visits in 2017, which meant more
children had a brighter day.” For parents, Spread a Smile offers a chance for them to see their children looking happy, as one explained: “The entertainers were one of the only things that could raise a smile in our daughter during chemotherapy. “It’s hard to explain how slowly time passes on a children’s oncology ward, but Spread A Smile silenced the ticking of the clock, and remained at our daughter’s side to sprinkle a little fairy dust and make her feel, for a few moments, like the luckiest
POP UP It may have been a cold April weekend, but that did not stop All Aboard from setting up its biannual stall at the King’s Cross, Classic Car Boot Sale and raising a staggering amount for its many worthy charities. Held over two days, the hardworking team of regular volunteers, staff and chief executive Alan Haynes gave up their time to make sales while meeting and chatting to many new customers who might not otherwise have heard of All Aboard. The charity’s next pop-up at Canary Wharf is 18 July 2018 and then again at King’s Cross in August. You can follow the charity on Instagram for latest updates, including news about its latest eBay treasures. All Aboard’s eBay online shop is going from strength to strength, with an ever increasing range of daily listings, including collectibles, high end and designer items. BOSS On The Run
The charity is always looking for top-drawer stock so if you have something “a bit more special” and want All Aboard to make the most of it, then please donate to its eBay shop. New to All Aboard is its warehouse shop, with handpicked designer and vintage goods for sale. Visits are by appointment only.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN. Time for All Aboard’s chief executive Alan Haynes to take part in the Maccabi Fun Run and tackle another 10km run, raising much needed-funds for the charity’s shops. This year is proving to be particularly challenging for the boss, as an old knee injury is hampering his training. Alan hopes to get some warm weather training in before the event, or rather, a trip to see the “mother in law” in Israel with running shoes already packed! “Beats running around Watford,” says Alan. “Not that there is anything wrong with Watford.” This will be Alan’s third event, having last year completed the Tri-Run event – which is running the 10km, 5km and 1km all on the same day – raising more than £1,800 for All Aboard. As always, it will have a stall at Fun Run handing out “goodie bags” to the children and talking to the community about ways they can support or volunteer for the charity. To support Alan, go to his Just Giving web page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Alan-Haynes6 where he hopes to raise more than £3,500 for All Aboard this year.

Charity Shop / Fashion, Health & Beauty
Charity shopaholic Deborah Cicurel takes a seasonal browse at All Aboard Where can you find a French Connection dress for £5, a gorgeous coffee table book for £2 and a pristine cup and saucer set for £10? All Aboard, of course. Knowing the money from your purchases is going to charity turns shopping into the ultimate guilt-free experience, and the shops really do have a great selection of clothes, books, crockery, games, shoes and sun hats. First sight of the sun and light evenings is a good excuse to pop in and hunt for those little All Aboard extras, and as I entered the branch on West End Lane, I spotted a basket of scarves for just £1 each. In spring months, when the warm weather veers to cold without any warning, how could I resist? I quickly snapped up a beautiful red scarf for less than half the price of a coffee. Tempting, also, were the Oasis and French Connection dresses I spotted for as little as £5. I have plenty of summer parties coming up: perfect, I thought. Then it was time to
wander over to the book section. For as little as £1, there were countless useful items: Lonely Planet books on destinations I’d love to visit, practically new cookbooks stuffed with recipes and arty tomes that would look perfect on my coffee table. My arms stuffed with new purchases, and all for less than I’d spend on a pair of high street jeans, I couldn’t resist looking elsewhere in the store. OK, so I didn’t really need new cups and saucers, but the delicate porcelain, intricate design and low prices were too tempting. And then I saw a huge sunhat, which is a sensible buy with summer coming – and so was the board game for those long Shabbat afternoons when the whole family is round the table.

HAIR AT LAST Brie Bailey finds a salon that does long-stay styling for girls of all ages
O
nce upon a time you had to go to New York to get a fullset of acrylic nails attached within the hour. A manicure in Blighty during the same period was a file, shape and polish done by a nice lady sitting on a footstool while a stylist permed your hair. We caught up of course when the Korean experts set up shop on every high street and got us excited about massage chairs and Shellac. So much for catching up with NYC and the French tips, when it comes to blow dry-only salons we were sadly lacking – and then along came Amba. Dedicated blow-out bars are two-a-penny in Manhattan, where clients who only want a wash and styling do not have to squeeze in between the cut and colour customers and that is something Amba’s owner Telina Morjaria understood. Her pastel-coloured salon on Mill Hill Broadway is seductively girlie and the stylists love blow-drying which is not true of many hairdressers. With a glass of bubbly in your hand they will talk you through their extensive lookbook which features such favourites as the Super Straight One, the Hollywood, the Bouncy one and the Beachy one.
Madison and Millie prepare for plaits
But there is more and when your daughters hear about it they will be Amba regulars too. The braid board set by the window features a collection of plaits, fishtails and hair rolls that burgeoning fashionistas can’t resist particularly for a barmitzvah or party. My own daughter felt her polished double Dutch plaits were also perfect for school and invited her friend Millie to come on our second visit. A blow-dry that lasts for a week, a braid that’s cool for school and a glass of bubbly….. Manhattan has finally made it to Mill Hill. tel: 0208 906 9000 e-mail: info@ambablowdry.com

Push Presents/ Fashion, Health & Beauty
PUSHED FOR GIFT IDEAS? Everyone knows what to buy a new baby. But what about the parents? Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate, which is pretty much what happened when Sharona Rollnick went looking for a unique gift for her newly-pregnant sister and her partner – the soon-to-be dad. The search resulted in her setting up a dedicated gift shop – Birthing Gifts – which has an incredible selection of presents for everyone about to enter the baby world who needs to feel the love from family and friends. But there is more. Straight from the US comes the aptly-named Push Present, which is essentially a reward for the mother’s efforts, although dads have been known to empathise to such a degree that they might be worthy of a ‘push present’ too ( a ‘plutzing present’ might be more accurate). So what can you buy at Birthing Gifts? Click recipients on the site and you’ll find those ‘Push Presents’ for mum, which include the personalised Royal Crown Thermos Travel Mug or a personalised Sleep Well Candle. There’s also jewellery and why not? She deserves it. Gifts for dad include the super cute personalised ‘Daddy and Me’ T shirts and don’t think for a minute that grandparents get left out, so there’s sugges-
tions for them and what kind of a parent would you be if you left out the other siblings? Evidently you will soon be able to find gifts for a brit on the site, and while you are guessing about what these might be, why not think about acquiring a mother and baby yoga and massage course as a gift. Sharona not only has an expert eye for presents, but she is also a qualified therapist and knows that the combination of massage and yoga can help a baby to sleep easily and well. What better present could there be for new parents? birthinggifts.com and www.babymassageandyoga.co.uk

Living with MS / Fashion, Health & Beauty
‘Being in a wheelchair was
NOT AN OPTION’ Alex Galbinski speaks to two people with multiple sclerosis about the ‘life-changing’ treatment that has turned around their condition
D
arren Fields will never forget the day his consultant told him he had the wrong illness. “What he actually meant was that multiple sclerosis (MS) was the wrong illness to have in the UK, because it is not a priority,” says Darren, who discovered later that a treatment feted for halting the disease was out of reach, because he had to trial other treatments first. Darren, 48, always knew that developing MS was a possibility as his mother and sister are sufferers. Because of his awareness of the condition, he was immediately able to identify the signs others would miss – so, when he woke up one morning to find his legs had gone hard, he knew what was happening. MS is an autoimmune condition that causes faulty immune cells to attack the nerves in the brain and/or spinal cord. It causes symptoms that include problems with vision, balance and co-ordination, as well as muscle stiffness, and there is currently no cure. Once diagnosed with MS, Darren was treated with disease modifying therapies (DMT), but the side effect of one caused liver problems, and another made him vulnerable to a deadly brain infection. This drug was also prescribed for a two-year period by doctors who told him taking it was at his own risk. Unfortunately, Darren’s symptoms were progressing – he was getting a tight feeling around his chest known as the MS ‘hug’, tingling down his left side, and random symptoms, such as discomfort in his eyes and pain down his leg. Being in constant pain made it difficult to
concentrate and function properly. All the while, Darren, a member of Radlett United Synagogue, was researching MS and its different treatments. He had discovered that haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), normally a treatment for people with cancer, was also producing good results for MS sufferers. When he told his doctors he wanted to pursue this treatment at a Russian clinic, they dismissed the idea. “They said no, it’s too extreme, you’re not bad enough, it’ll kill you,” he recalls. HSCT is a complex treatment involving high doses of chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow stem cell transplant to ‘reset’ the immune system. It does not regenerate damaged nerves, but aims to kill off the abnormal cells attacking the nervous system, thereby reducing inflammatory damage. Darren knew that this treatment carried its own risks, notably death as a result of the immune system being wiped out. “But it had got to the point where I had done sufficient research and followed enough people who had got through this treatment to decide that the science of it made sense,” says Darren. “I told my neurologist I was going to do it privately, and he said, ‘I’m not going to talk to you out of it – it’s the best treatment for MS’.” At the time, HSCT treatment in the UK was undergoing clinical trials for which Darren did not qualify, as his doctors did not consider his condition to be sufficiently advanced. “But the symptoms I had clearly showed my MS was progressing,” he insists. “I had also read enough to know that the earlier treatment is received – when there’s less damage – the better. Drugs will hold it at bay, but they don’t destroy it.” Darren’s belief was confirmed in March with the findings of the first ever international large scale randomised trial into HSCT in relapsing remitting MS. It showed that the treatment stopped the disease and significantly improved disability. The results have been described as a “game-changer”, although the trial co-investigators pointed out that longerterm evaluation is necessary and that the treatment is not suitable for every person with MS. But Darren wasn’t prepared to wait around and, in October 2016, flew to
Moscow’s Pirogov Centre where, over four weeks, he underwent the gruelling HSCT treatment, spending 10 days in isolation at a private cost of £40,000. A year later, he returned to Russia to be told his lesions had shrunk and there was no sign of MS. Doctors also believe he has a 95 percent chance of staying MS free. Overjoyed by his own recovery, Darren is disappointed others with MS aren’t given the option of HSCT treatment. “It’s not right – I look at those I know with MS who are now in a wheelchair or use walking sticks. They could have been in a better place having had this treatment. “UK doctors did not identify any new or active lesions, but in Russia they said my MS was highly active. Had I not gone there, I’d have had a major relapse and who knows what would have happened?” Darren also believes the cost of HSCT should be seen in the context of the longterm impact to the NHS to support an MS sufferer. “The treatment costs £40,000, but the drug I was taking costs the NHS £5,000 per month, which is £180,000 over three years. Add to that the risk of progression with no ability to work, benefits claimed, and care providers and you can see the cost to the NHS is millions per patient – but it doesn’t have to be.”
Jodi Jackson is another success story. The mother-of-three was diagnosed in March last year with an aggressive form of MS. Doctors told her she would be wheelchair-bound within 12 months and palliatively looked after within five to 10 years. The diagnosis, after waking up one night
feeling strange with numbness in her leg, came as a complete shock; Jodi had been a six-days-a-week gym-goer. By the time she was diagnosed with MS a few weeks later, she was suffering spasms in her arms and legs and couldn’t walk. “In hospital, I started manically researching HSCT from legitimate sources such as The Lancet. But all the consultants were saying, ‘Don’t do it, you’ll die’.” “It was a bit of a ‘Sophie’s Choice’ situation for me – do nothing, take the drugs and end up in a wheelchair on the sidelines of my children’s lives, or take a risk but possibly halt the disease forever,” she admits. Jodi, who lives in Arkley, talked to specialists about HSCT, one of whom told her she was a perfect candidate. However, she did not fit the criteria to have it on the NHS so opted to go private and was treated last October at London Bridge Hospital. It wasn’t easy. “My kids went to live with my brother, and I only saw them twice. I lost all my hair and I was very weak from the chemo,” she recalls. But she hasn’t looked back. The severe aches and pains, fatigue, pins and needles, ‘head fog’ and problems walking have all gone, while the lesions have shrunk. “They don’t call it a cure – they call it a halting of the disease,” she explains. “I’m out every day and back in the gym – it’s like it never happened. “MS is a very cruel disease: it can hit you at any time. Once there’s permanent damage, there’s no reversing it. I realise the treatment is not for everyone, but if everyone knew about it, at least they’d have the option.” Dr David Schley of the MS Society says: “HSCT is an important development in MS treatment and we’ve seen life-changing results for some people. “It can help prevent MS symptoms from progressing and, in some cases, even improve them. “However, results are varied and, unfortunately, HSCT doesn’t seem to be effective for all types of MS, which affects 100,000 people in the UK. “We strongly encourage anyone considering HSCT to discuss this carefully with their GP or neurologist, who can help you weigh up the risks and potential benefits.” For further information about MS and HSTC treatment: www.nhs.uk/conditions/multiple-sclerosis www.mssociety.org.uk

WELL BEING FIND YOURSELF
They say that a change is as good as a rest for your state of mind – and what’s not to love about a break that includes something you’d love to do in a stunning location, far from the stresses of daily life? James Lockett, the founder and CEO of Frui, tells me that the company offers holidays for solo travellers looking to combine great locations with creativity. This creativity comes in the form of photography, painting,
drawing or cookery in locations that include Mongolia, Portugal and Jerusalem. He and the other tutors work to create ‘buzz moments’; times when you look around and can’t quite believe the amazing sights you have seen or what you have done. On the company’s recent photographic trip to Botswana, the buzz moment came when his group came across a pride of lions at 6.30am on their first game drive. “They were less than five metres away from us,” James exclaims. “We then tracked rhinos on foot and managed to photograph some of them. We had tea at a watering hole and some male giraffes came and started feeding, and we ended with an amazing outdoor BBQ in the bush. That was a pretty good day!” Frui aims to help its clients gain interesting perspectives on the world. As the groups are small – a maximum of 10 – the solo travellers bond easily. “We get a real mix on our holidays,” affirms James, who has a background in teaching art and photography. “On the Botswana trip, we had people in their mid-thirties to mid-sixties, and they all tend to be good fun. Some of them have been away with us on more than eight trips.”
The Israel photography trip is focused mainly on Jerusalem, but also takes in Jaffa as well as the surrounding desert and monasteries. The trips – lasting a long weekend (from £599) or up to two weeks (from £3,000) are also suitable for beginners, James assures. “We cover the basics but after that we do creative projects only focusing on a few technical aspects so it’s not like being bombarded by technical knowhow. “It’s more about enjoying the location by engaging with it more creatively than you would just sitting by the pool.” And should anyone want to brush up on the basics before committing to a longer trip, Frui runs day courses in London, Bristol, Leeds and Brighton. Now, I just need to decide which trip to sign up to first... www.frui.co.uk

Dr Chris Steele, resident doctor on ITV’s This Morning, discussed the benefits of LifeMel, a beehive product created by Russian microbiologist Dr Alexander Goroshit, who then moved to Israel. Steele explained that chemotherapy kills off cancer cells but also brings down the white blood cells that are the body’s immune system that kill off viruses and bacteria. “So if they drop to a certain level, specialists have to stop the chemo, reduce the dose, or spread the chemo out, but then the
tumour grows again,” he said. Referring to a small study showing what happened when LifeMel was given to patients on chemotherapy, he said: “They didn’t suffer this white cell drop. The findings were that 40 percent of patients got no drop in their white blood cells, 64 percent had no drop in their haemoglobin and 32 percent felt better.” The bees are fed on a special food mixture that enables them to make a product containing 16 medicinal herb extracts, including Siberian ginseng, Echinacea and uncaria tomentosa. Goroshit started his research in Russia after discovering that, while there was a cholera epidemic occurring in a certain village, it did not affect the beekeepers and their families. Dr Chris said: “Personally, I’ve advised this [product] to patients; one had cancer of the throat, one had breast cancer [and their] white cell counts didn’t drop. “And I’m treating one now who has pancreatic cancer and on a very toxic chemotherapy. He’s halfway through his chemo and he’s taken this honey and his white blood cells have dropped a little but no change in his chemo…” The recommended dose of the product – which is not technically a honey – is one level teaspoonful twice a day and a 120g jar costs £37.50. FEET FIRST Debbie Collins has first ‘foot’ experience of a top podiatrist ONE ADVANTAGE of the unpredictable British weather is that our feet can stay firmly within closed-toe shoes and fleece-lined boots. But then along comes a bout of warm weather and it’s time to reveal those hibernating feet – most of which are not ready to be seen with few or no visits to the chiropodist to have kept them in check. Step forward A & A Podiatrists in Radlett. Michael Abrahams and his team of podiatrists have been working in the area for 18 years, and the modern, friendly and welcoming practice
attracts patients from near and far. As a local practice, Michael always tries to be time flexible for his patients, whether that means opening for an early morning appointment, late night slots for commuters and even Sunday appointments. “I’ve got patients coming from as far as Windsor and Stratford,” he says. “I try to operate a relaxed and friendly surgery.” The majority of foot complaints Michael deals with are ingrown toenails and pesky verrucae – a common issue for younger patients – and his relaxed manner sets childrens’ minds at rest about the treatment. His method really doesn’t hurt and parents trust him to get verrucae dealt with far easier (and often cheaper) than over-the-counter products that have failed to bring long-term results. A & A Podiatrists are experts in advising and treating various in-chair procedures for toenail fungal infections, where a six-month treatment is carried out using revolutionary Pinpointe Laser and/or Lunula Laser machines from the USA, to direct low-level light to the affected area to kill off the fungus. Another common problem is that of reoccur-
ring ingrown toenails, an exceptionally painful thing to deal with. “Why suffer?” says Michael. “We carry out a simple but highly effective procedure called a ‘partial nail ablation’. A local anaesthetic is used to numb your toe so the edges of the nail can be cut away, resulting in a ‘slimmer’ nail bed. I’ve had patients who have suffered for more than 10 years with ingrown toenails and, after this treatment and a little after-care, can’t believe they suffered for so long.” Michael’s growing CV of experience, including a ‘MAT’ course (Movement Assessment Tool), means he can provide additional footcare treatments. “I’m always attending new courses and seminars to see how I can improve my practice by adding new products and services. Patients will often come in with additional problems, such as interior foot pain.” The practice can assess your gait for sports injuries and foot pain or check on flat feet. “I’m now looking into the dynamic and functional assessment of patients, by carrying out hop tests and jumps test and recording these details to prescribe the best course of treatment,” Michael continues. “This may be
prescribed orthotics, which we cast and fit here in Radlett, as well as a customised exercise plan.” Having caught my own toenail on the base of my bed last year, aside from the pain and discomfort, the nail eventually fell off and looked terribly unsightly. A & A Podiatry were able to provide a fantastic service called Pedique cosmetic nail reconstruction, which is non-toxic and, unlike standard salon nail tips, anti-fungal. The technique is excellent for discoloured, damaged or injured toenails whereby the special non-toxic gel, similar but more flexible than acrylic, is applied to create a ‘nail’. “This procedure is as popular for both men and women,” says Michael. “A badly damaged nail will never grow back properly so the Pedique gel is a fantastic solution to create the illusion of a near-perfect nail. No one would ever know what’s underneath.” For information and appointments, visit: A & A Podiatrists, 9 Station Road, Radlett, WD7 8JY. Tel: 01923 856 235 www.painfreefeet.co.uk

NOTHING TO GET STRESSED ABOUT SWEATY PALMS, MUSCLE TENSION, RACING HEART, flushed cheeks, light
headedness. We have all experienced some of these at some point in our lives. There are many factors in our lives that can cause stress. Work deadlines, financial troubles, arguments with loved ones and even traffic congestion are just some of the things in our lives that cause it. Being stressed is perfectly natural as it’s our bodies way of dealing with the negative pressures placed on it. However, stress can become a problem when the pressures become overwhelming and, in some cases, it can be a pre-cursor to anxiety.
FEELING ANXIOUS?
Anxiety is one of the most distressing emotions that people feel. It is sometimes called fear or nervousness. In the medical world, the word anxiety is used to describe different intensities of emotions from brief periods of nervousness to fear when faced with difficult experiences. It can also manifest itself in more serious ways such as phobias where people have a fear of a specific thing or situation. There are also panic attacks in which people feel like they can’t breathe plus post-traumatic stress disorder where repeated memories of terrible traumas can create high levels of distress.

When we are anxious, our physical, behavioural and thinking changes and what we experience is part of a response series called fight, flight and freeze. These three responses are good reactions to danger and form part of our own survival mechanisms. The trick is to idenfity when you are actually anxious and when your body is simply reacting to some form
of danger. For example, we may experience the same feeling of anxiousness watching a film about a robbery as we would when standing in front of a group of people to give a speech. There are ways to reduce anxiety when danger is not present, when the danger is not as serious as you might think or when too much anxiety interferes with good coping. It’s all about understanding the causes and effects of your anxiety and exploring your fears. With a range of psycho-education and motivational work you can be given the tools to deal with your emotions, and build
TOP TIPS TO DEAL WITH STRESS: • Take a deep breath and inhale and exhale slowly • Learn mindfulness techniques through Tai Chi or Yoga • Try to solve your problems in a structured way • Exercise on a daily basis • Take time out from the situation and go for a walk or listen to music • Work on maintaining a positive attitude and understand that you cannot control everything your emotional stability and confidence. However if the stress has moved to medium or serve anxiety as discussed in this article, It is always best to seek professional help. Putting your feet first
f you think private medical insurance is too expensive, think again. The deals are out there, if only you know where to look. Or – better still – get someone else to look for you. Switch Health is a specialist healthcare brokerage dedicated to bringing you the best value-for-money deals on private medical care – even if you have a pre-existing condition. With a choice of over 500 policies to choose from, they’ll have something just right for your circumstances, whatever they may be. “There are certainly good deals out there to be had,” said director Dan Parker. “I’ve just arranged cover for a young family – two adults, two children – where the monthly premium is £67.45. This includes all tests, full patient treatment in hospital with surgeon’s fees and an unlimited cancer pledge.” He explained: “Part of the problem is that people have got no idea of the range and variety of medical cover available – and how to access it.” Switch Health, for instance, don’t charge client fees. The service is free. And they’re independent. “This means you get the right policy for you based on your individual needs as everyone’s requirements are different,” said Dan. “Many of the deals we offer as a broker won’t be available to you as a direct customer. We have a wider range of BUPA policies, for instance, than you’ll get by visiting their website as an individual.” Some of them are specifically designed for cases with ‘difficult’ medical histories. There has been a brand new ‘switch and save’ deal launched with effect from May 21st which has a simplified switch declaration, savings of up to 10%, even on a mid-year switch and enhanced cover guaranteed. This offer is also from an insurer with a 5* Defaqto rating! Others offer free cover for children – if you pay for the eldest child or ‘partner goes free’ for the first year. Many of these deals are often short-term – so advice from a specialist like Switch Health. Their expertise can also help you avoid the horror stories. We’ve all heard tales of inadequate cover – or where a specialist’s fees were ‘too high’ for the policy, resulting in a hefty bill for the luckless patient. “Being familiar with the small print is our
job,” said Dan. “People make genuine but avoidable mistakes when dealing with these situations alone. We’re here to help ensure they avoid the possible pitfalls.” Some are commonplace within the industry, but largely unknown to the general public – “like the ‘Six Week Rule’ – often referred to by insurers who offer it as a ‘safety net’ which is misleading in my opinion as it makes it sound like a good thing to have on your policy!” “This is written into a number of policies and means the insurer won’t pay out if the NHS can see you within six weeks – which effectively excludes cancer treatments, which are typically prioritised by the health service. Because you’re seen quickly, you’ll never be able to claim.” Specialists’ fees can be another bone of contention because some policies contain what are known as ‘fee guidelines’ which set price limits for various procedures. For example, the standard fee for a cataract removal is £282. But some specialists will charge a lot more than that – on account of their expertise and additional experience. If their bill goes above the ‘fee guideline’ the patient will have to pay the extra. “Knowing which policies operate fee guidelines – and which policies don’t – means we can direct the customer to a product which is just right for them,” said Dan. “You can still be seen by the top experts in the field, without incurring a big bill.” Even if you already have medical insurance, it makes sense to give Switch Health a call. Fifty percent of their business involves dealing with existing cover – to see whether there’s a better deal on offer elsewhere. “People go to private medical insurance for a variety of reasons,” said Dan. Peace of mind is one of the main factors. Maybe they’ve had a bad experience of the NHS or want to e seen straight away. Or maybe they want access to cancer drugs not available on the NHS. Whatever the reason, it’s vital to get the right cover – and our business has been set up in a way which means there’s no incentive for our sales team to prioritise one provider over another. This means our deals are always tailored to the client’s best interests. It’s our first and only priority.” www.switchhealth.co.uk

Shaping Up/ Fashion, Health & Beauty
THE RIGHT FIT Deborah Cicurel goes in search of her shape
I LOVE MARATHONS, but mine tend to be the eating and boxset kind. So imagine my dismay at discovering summer was upon us and I had to whip myself into shape. My first stop was Rachelle Goodwin, a personal trainer who works from home in Golders Green (gymrachelle1@gmail.com). With a long list of qualifications, a friendly demeanour and plenty of experience, Goodwin is a great option for people who want to get fit in a
non-judgemental, warm environment. She runs three classes a week, which vary from £8 to £10 and could be in anything from cardio to boxing, and also offers personal training sessions at £45 an hour, with discounts if you book a pack of 10. The classes are more than just classes: the groups who attend are now great friends, sharing in each other’s happy and sad times. We started by running through my general health and how often I exercise (answer: not
enough). Goodwin then took me through an hour’s personal training session, starting off slowly so she could assess my fitness, then progressing onto movements using weights, Swiss balls and resistance bands. While I’m often intimidated walking into swanky gym classes full of Victoria’s Secret lookalikes, thinking everyone is laughing at my inability to do a press-up, there was no need to panic at this class. Goodwin was patient and talked me through all the exercises, making sure to adapt them to my abilities. She has helped all sorts of clients, from brides looking to whittle down for their weddings, to older ladies who can barely stand without being in pain. Whatever your state of fitness, Goodwin will get you working hard without feeling embarrassed. My next stop on the journey to fitness was Fit Club Studios (fitclubstudios.co.uk), a stylish, cool fitness studio on Totteridge Lane. While they offer everything from boxing and spin to dance and HIIT, I decided to start off gently with a Pilates class. The class was excellent: challenging for the body but yet never intimidating or too fast-paced. The instructor spoke slowly, gave clear instructions and offered modifications for anyone who couldn’t manage the initial
exercises. The gym is a well-thought out space: there’s everything from a bar to bicycles for spinning classes, but yet it never looks squashed. There was plenty of space for everyone in the class to keep up with the Pilates exercises, and there are extremely modern, clean showers and changing areas once you’re finished. Best of all, it’s suited to all kinds of gym-goers, whether you spend two hours a day in there, or one hour a month at best. There are gym facilities so you can work out on your own, or a long list of classes, from intense, cardio-heavy workouts to relaxing yoga sessions. There are also several payment options to work around you: you can buy packs of gym classes, packs of gym passes or just a single one if you don’t want to commit. The first class is free, too, so choose a class and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
