May stresses importance of Iran nuke deal to Bibi Prime Minister Theresa May has used a phone call with her Israeli counterpart to stress the importance of the Iran nuclear deal.

May told Benjamin Netanyahu that it was important the agreement was properly monitored and enforced, as the international community needed to be “clear-eyed” about the threat Iran poses to the Middle East.

The nuclear deal with Tehran received strong criticism from President Donald Trump, amid speculation that the US administration may withdraw.

The landmark agreement capped Iran’s uranium enrichment levels in return for the lifting of international sanctions.

Referring to the call with Netanyahu, a Downing Street spokesman said: “They discussed Iran, with the prime

minister noting the importance of the nuclear deal with Iran, which has neutralised the possibility of the Iranians acquiring nuclear weapons for more than a decade.

“The prime minister said the UK remains firmly committed to the deal and that we believe it is vitally important for regional security.

“The prime minister said it was important that the deal is carefully monitored and properly enforced, and that both sides deliver on their commitments.”

The spokesman added: “They agreed that the international community needed to be clear-eyed about the threat Iran poses to the Gulf and the wider Middle East, and that the international community should continue working together to push back against Iran’s destabilising regional activity.”

The spokesman said the two

prime ministers agreed that both nations wanted strong post-Brexit trade links.

He added: “They agreed security co-operation between the UK and Israel was very strong and would continue, particularly on counterterrorism, where we faced shared challenges.

“They also agreed our bilateral trade relationship would continue to go from strength to strength, noting the UKIsrael trade working group had already met, and discussions on how to ensure the freest possible post-Brexit trading relationship had been constructive.”

Iran and Israel have engaged in a war of words recently, with the former’s President Hassan Rouhani saying at the UN that it was “not possible” to guarantee Israel’s security as long as it “usurped” Palestinian lands.

FIRST ROCKET FROM GAZA IN TWO MONTHS A rocket fired from Gaza struck southern Israel on Sunday evening, but no injuries were reported.

The Code Red warning siren sounded in southern Israeli cities and towns near the border with Gaza at about 9pm prior to the rocket landing in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council.

It is the first rocket fire from Gaza in about two months. The attack comes as a reconciliation deal between the Fatah party and the terrorist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip has progressed.

CROSSINGS CLOSED TO PALESTINIANS

Crossings between Israel and the West Bank and Gaza have been closed to Palestinians for 11 days.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman approved the closure after three Israeli officers were killed by a Palestinian man at the entrance to the Jerusalem-area West Bank settlement of Har Adar.

Exceptions were being made for humanitarian, medical and unusual cases with the approval of the Israeli military’s coordinator of government activities in the territories.

Ofcom clears Al Jazeera programme Al Jazeera has been cleared of breaching impartiality rules by media regulator Ofcom after complaints concerning its fourpart documentary about proIsrael groups in the UK, which aired earlier this year.

The Qatar-based network said it had been “vindicated” this week after regulators did not uphold four complaints about The Lobby documentary.

Based on covert reporting by a journalist posing as a proIsrael activist, the documentary exposed how an Israeli diplomat sought to set up political groups in the UK and even discussed “taking down” proPalestinian ministers and MPs.

The filming resulted in an immediate apology from Israel’s ambassador, the removal of the diplomat in question, statements of “serious concern” made by the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, and an inquiry into undue influence by foreign

Pro-Israel campaigners in the UK alleged, however, that Al Jazeera was guilty of antiSemitism, infringement of privacy, unfair editing and bias.

Ofcom rejected all four counts, saying Al Jazeera was not in breach of the Code of Conduct.

The regulator said: “We did not consider the programme portrayed negative stereotypes of Jewish people as controlling or seeking to control the media or governments. It was our view these individuals featured in the context of its investigation into the alleged activities of a foreign state.”

MPs back Berger on mental health A call from Labour MP Luciana Berger for the prime minister to ring-fence mental health spending has received the backing of 160 MPs. Writing on World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, the Liverpool Wavertree MP [pictured], who was appointed Shadow Minister for Mental Health by Jeremy Corbyn before resigning in a failed coup, told Theresa May: “Money is not reaching the front-line.”

During last week’s Conservative Party conference, May said mental health had been “dangerously disregarded as a secondary issue to physical health” but Berger said May’s words were at odds with reality, arguing that Clinical Commissioning Groups were having to spend less on mental health this year owing to cuts.

She urged May to “commit to ring-fence mental health spending… There is prec-

edent with other areas of NHS funding and this would be a transformative policy that would make a real difference to local services”.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said an extra £1.3 billion would be invested annually from 2021.

However, Ben Barkow, director of the Wiener Library, said: “The UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation has not been as constructive or communicative as it could be in accepting the input of the UK’s experts from libraries, museums, memorial institutions or survivor organisations, historians and education specialists.

TRUMP ACCUSED OF APPRENTICE ‘ANTI-SEMITISM’ Anti-Jewish sentiment and other racism was a big part of the persona of Donald Trump when he starred on The Apprentice, one of the producers has claimed. Bill Pruitt told a US National Public Radio podcast that after the first couple of shows of the series, Trump started saying inappropriate things during discussions about who to fire. Pruitt said it was “very much a racist issue” about AfricanAmericans and Jewish people.

SCHOOLGIRL HURT IN ‘ANTI-SEMITIC’ ATTACK IN PARIS A 10-year-old girl was assaulted by her classmates and the home of a family daubed with racist graffiti in two Paris-area incidents deemed to be anti-Semitic. The alleged assault was reported to France’s ministry of education by watchdog group the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA. The group also said anti-Semitic slogans were daubed on the side of a home belonging to a Jewish family in a Paris suburb. [JTA]

Concern over donor plans The Board of Deputies has urged the government to tread carefully if it reverses the system of organ donation in the UK by requiring people to opt out instead of opting in.

The board’s cautionary note followed Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party conference speech last week in which she said the government would shift “the balance in favour of organ donation”.

Marie van der Zyl, a board vice president, said: “While Judaism in principle encourages organ donation in order to save lives, any changes must ensure there is no risk of a person having organs taken against their and their families’ wishes. This could obviously cause very grave distress at a sensitive time.”

She added: “The removal of organs raises religious issues centring on the point at which death is presumed to occur.

The government will need to consult carefully to protect freedom of religious practice.”

A genetic test for groups of women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer could soon be rolled out across the UK after researchers said it might prompt corrective surgery.

The Single Nucleotide Polymorphism [SNP] test, which samples blood or saliva, will at first be available for patients at St Mary’s Hospital in London and Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, but cancer charities say they hope it will be rolled out nationwide.

Sir Cliff Richard took his entertainment to the tennis courts in Israel this week, one day before his concert in Tel Aviv, in aid of a charity helping Israeli Arab children mix with their Jewish peers.

The British singer, 76, hit the courts in Herzliya as part of a fundraiser for the Freddie Krivine Foundation, which facilitates tennis coaching to children aged eight to 18 years, ahead of his concert at Menora Mivtachim Arena.

The Christian entertainer and tennis fan joined forces with the foundation, which supports both Muslim and Christian Israeli Arab schools and after-school tennis clubs, as well as promoting coexistence through sport with Jewish children.

JCoSS headmaster ordained as a priest The headmaster of JCoSS has been ordained as a Church of England priest.

Patrick Moriarty, 51, who is not Jewish, has been headmaster of the Jewish Community Secondary School in East Barnet since 2012. The school has 1,300 students and 100 teachers.

“The governing body is proud to have a non-Jew as its head teacher and prouder still that he has been able to find time to take his own religious beliefs to the next level,” said Jeremy Kosky, chairman of the school’s governors.

Moriarty, who works 70 hours a week, has been appointed as assistant curate at St Mary the Virgin in Barnet, following his ordination as a deacon in July at St Albans Cathedral.

Moriarty’s new colleagues at St Mary the Virgin were pleased to share him with the Jewish institution, they said.

Interfaith succah in Grenfell’s shadow Members of three London synagogues – West London, New West End and Holland Park – held an interfaith Succot lunch on Sunday with worshippers from a nearby mosque.

Al Manaar mosque hosted the event, with the aim of “promoting mutual understanding, cohesion, and interfaith work” between the faiths.

Also looking to address poverty and homelessness in London, participants brought food to be donated to the mosque’s homeless night shelter.

Rabbi Natan Levy, of Faiths Forum for London, who helped to facilitate the initiative, said:

“After Grenfell the mosque and synagogues opened their doors, purses and hearts to victims of the Grenfell fire. The succah continues this generous community spirit of hospitality.

“This succah in the courtyard of Al Manaar is a tangible symbol of healing and hope at the heart of a community coming together across divides of faith and sectarianism.”

Levy added: “I love all the questions I get – such as why am I building a booth in my backyard? But my favourite element here is the children.

“We adults do interfaith, but we love having kids come here – a Jewish child visiting

The Balfour100 committee, which is responsible for planning the community’s celebrations, said more than 160 events have already been planned, including Friday night dinners, lectures and debates.

Teacher ‘fired’ for living with partner A teacher at a Jewish nursery school in London claims she was fired for living with her boyfriend.

Zelda de Groen, 24, is suing Gan Menachem nursery in Hendon, for more than £20,600, charging religious and sexual discrimination.

The nursery, for children under the age of eight, is described as “ultra-Orthodox” in the lawsuit.

De Groen grew up in a Charedi home in Stamford Hill, but left “after many years of significant discontent”.

She moved in with her boyfriend in April last year.

De Groen, who has since married her boyfriend, told the Watford Employment Tribunal that school managers subjected her to

a ‘humiliating’ hourlong interview in which they said it was time for her to get married. She also described their tone as “threatening”.

“I was told that having kids outside of marriage is wrong and will not be tolerated,” she said.

Two days after the meeting De Groen asked her managers for an apology, but instead was given a letter notifying her of disciplinary proceedings. She was fired a month later.

Shoah-denying singer to stand trial A blogger accused of posting an antiSemitic song online denying the Holocaust is to stand trial in January following a campaign by a the Campaign Against Antisemitism [CAA].

Alison Chabloz penned the song (((Survivors))), which includes lyrics such as: “Did the Holocaust ever happen? Was it just a bunch of lies? Seems that some intend to pull the wool over our eyes” and “Now Auschwitz, holy temple, is a theme park just for fools, the gassing zone a proven hoax, indoctrination rules”.

She performed it, along with another called Nemo’s Anti-Semitic Universe, at a conference hosted by a group called The London Forum – which describes itself as “a confer-

During a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London last Wednesday, Chabloz was arrested on suspicion of further offences of sending offensive material by a

public communications network.

Proceedings continued without her.

Chabloz, 53, of Town Lane, Charlesworth, in Glossop, Derbyshire, originally faced a private prosecution by CAA, after the Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] decided not to pursue the case. It later reversed its decision and pressed charges.

Chabloz is charged with two counts of sending by a public communications network an offensive, indecent or menacing message or material and two alternative counts of “causing” offensive material to be sent by a public communications network.

She is expeceted to enter a plea at a preliminary hearing on 25 October.

FOX: ISRAEL KEY AFTER BREXIT The minister responsible for negotiating Britain’s new trading relationships in the post-Brexit world told a Jewish Care breakfast that Israel will be “a key partner in the future”.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox MP, who called himself “a longstanding friend of the Israeli people,” said the UK was already the “number one destination in Europe for Israeli investment,” with 300 Israeli companies listed here.

Fox paid tribute to an event last month celebrating Tel Aviv in London, saying: “I was struck by the many similarities between the two cities, not only in their formidable international reputations for technology, innovation and financial services, but in the vibrancy of the culture that we share.

“These parallels are indicative of the complimentary nature of the Israeli and UK economies. It is a

strong foundation from which to enhance our future relationship.”

He added that he was “proud” to have created a UK-Israel Trade Working Group within his department, which he said was “designed to identify and remove barriers to trade between our two countries.”

Fox added: “This will strengthen our bilateral relationship and provide a foundation for further progress on our exit from the EU.”

PM’s wife ‘misused public funds’ The Israeli Prime Minister’s wife acted systematically and deliberately in her misuse of public funds to pay for lavish meals for herself and her family, according to a draft indictment fleaked to the press.

by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit accuses Sara Netanyahu of “exploiting her status as the wife of the prime minister” and details how she and Ezra Saidoff, a former deputy director general of the Prime Minister’s Office, “worked together to circumvent the rules and restrictions in order to fraudulently obtain

funding for the meals of Mrs Netanyahu and her family at the expense of the public”.

Both Netanyahu and Saidoff deny any wrongdoing and the indictments are pending hearings for both of them.

In the draft indictment, Mandelblidt says Netanyahu and Saidoff tried to hide the fact that cooks were employed at the residence, to justify the funding for the meals and the private chefs.

It was, says the attorney general, “a systematic thing”, done “deliberately to deceive the relevant persons at the prime minister’s residence”.

Under state regulations, cooks at the Prime Minister’s Residence are supposed to supply prime ministers and their immediate families with daily meals. Where cooks are not employed, the prime minister’s family is permitted to order external meals, up to a maximum cost of NIS 200 (£43) per person plus VAT. The document details 15 cases in which Netanyahu had chefs invited, despite six cooks being employed at the residence.

Jews not named at Canada Shoah memorial Canada’s government has removed a plaque at a new Holocaust memorial that omitted any reference to Jews or anti-Semitism.

The National Holocaust Memorial, in the capital of Ottawa, was inaugurated last week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The plaque memorialised the “millions of men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust” and the “survivors who ... were able to make their way to Canada after one of the darkest chapters in history”.

Opposition MP David Sweet said: “If we are going

to stamp out hatred toward Jews, it is important to get history right.”

Heritage Minister Melanie Joly said the plaque would be replaced with one “that reflects the horrors experienced by the Jewish people” as well as the Shoah’s five million other victims.

Key role for both centres Should we have two prominent, permanent and public Holocaust learning centres less than a mile apart from each other in central London? Can you have too much Holocaust education?

That was the suggestion this week, after the Imperial War Museum – whose own revamped exhibit opens in 2020 – struck a match, lit its cigarette, looked the new National Memorial proposal and said: ‘This town doesn’t need the two of us.’

A survey of anti-Semitic attitudes in the UK, published last month by the Institute of Jewish Policy Research, found that uncomfortable numbers still think “Jews exploit Holocaust victimhood for their own purposes”.

This is mirrored in the United States, where a quarter feel that “Jews still talk too much about what happened to them in the Holocaust”. You can’t over-talk the Holocaust because no one can do too much to avoid repeating it. Indeed, the day we stop remembering what happened is the day we’re condemned to.

Still, back to the point in question: do you need both the IWM’s new interactive Holocaust centre and the National Memorial’s underground learning centre a stone’s throw away from each other? Granted, if you were to design London from scratch, they probably wouldn’t be so close. But can they complement each other, rather than compete? Absolutely. It’s been known for almost two years that the Westminster project will include a learning centre alongside a memorial. So why has the IWM chosen to only speak out now? That it will be in such a prominent location – next to Parliament – is also crucial and a sign of the importance placed on Holocuast education across the political spectrum.

There are always new ways to help embed learning, so it is no bad thing to have two fine centres showing different aspects of a huge subject in a city whose streets are trod by the tens of millions. Bring them both on.

Rejigged definition is absurd You report that “Brent Council has voted to adopt an extended definition of anti-Semitism that includes Israel criticism” (jewishnews.co.uk, 19 September).

First, this is not correct. The IHRA definition of anti-Semitism states that mere criticism is not anti-Semitic (as is obvious).

Second, the rejigged definition passed is an absurdity. For example, in Brent it is now only ‘sometimes’ anti-Semitic to justify the killing of Jews in the name of a radical ideology. I called Councillor Shafique Choudhary (the Labour proposer of the amendment) to find out when

Moral fork in the road Renowned American Orthodox scholar Rabbi Moshe Tendler warned that by arguing against organ donation, Jews “separate themselves from the rest of humanity in a negative way”. Tendler’s profound point came to mind again this week in the wake of the prime minster’s announcement that the Government will “shift the balance in favour of organ donation”, so people will need to opt out rather than opt in.

‘FUNDAMENTALIST VIEWS’ NOT IMPOSED You report that the Jewish Life Advocacy Centre ‘is arguing that the rabbinical courts have no legal authority to investigate or reject an Israeli citizen’s Jewish status, especially since the state has already recognised it” [jewishnews.co.uk, 18 September].

Presumably this refers primarily to immigrants from the former Soviet Union who came under the terms of the Law of Return, which only required them to have at least one Jewish grandparent.

While its director, Rabbi Seth Farber, may be correct that “one must take at their word a person who says they are Jewish”, this only applies if there is no reason to be suspicious. There is so large a proportion of these recent immigrants whose maternal

grandmother was not Jewish that the rabbinic courts are forced to check all of them.

If this is so, the courts cannot perform their marriages since they are not halachically Jewish. They can, of course, convert, but most are unwilling to take on mitzvah observance, so this is usually not an option. In view of these facts, it isn’t true that “a small group is imposing its fundamentalist views on the Israeli immigrant population”.

JEWISH LEADERSHIP MUST SPEAK UP MORE ON ISRAEL One word glaringly absent from Jonathan Goldstein’s article in The Sunday Times on 1 October was “Israel”. Yet that’s the hook Jeremy Corbyn and his cronies use to couch their underlying anti-Semitism.

Only when the leadership of British Jewry states universally and unequivocally that singling out Israel for criticism equals anti-Semitism will things start to change.

Otherwise articles like this, which neatly avoid using the “I” word, only help to fan the flames. They support the notion that anti-Semitism and antiZionism are disconnected and

by doing so enable anti-Semites to perpetrate the former under the guise of the latter.

It’s obvious. It’s certainly clear for Jewish students on campus or any of us who has ever witnessed a proPalestinian demonstration.

I fail to understand why Jewish leadership in the UK finds it so difficult to speak resolutely on behalf of its connection to the world’s only Jewish homeland – a thriving economic, multicultural, multiethnic, liberal democracy.

The non-Jewish world will respect us more if we show more respect for ourselves.

L

anding in Israel was an experience like no other. I’d heard about the feeling of arriving at Ben Gurion from friends and colleagues I have met since founding the Pakistan Israel Alliance, but I certainly didn’t expect it to feel like this.

I was arriving early as a guest speaker of the IDC Herzliya Counter Terrorism Conference, and was the “advance party” as part of the Zionist Federation’s ground-breaking Muslim delegation to Israel.

Our group was in Israel from Thursday night until Monday afternoon. We saw many incredible things.

We visited the Western Wall, prayed at Al Aqsa, met with Israel’s first Bedouin diplomat and learnt of the Druze engagement with the IDF. We travelled from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, visiting the site of Israel’s declaration of independence, went to the north of Israel and saw the changing demographic and

environment, and spent the Shabbat hosted at a wonderful community in Jerusalem, Kol Haneshama, and by a fantastic spokesperson for the country in the form of a Jerusalem city councillor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum and her family.

This was my first visit to Israel, and came off the back of much hard work by the Zionist Federation to build links with the Pakistani Muslim community in the UK. This has been achieved firstly by founding the Pakistan Israel Alliance (PIA), of which I am proud to be the director, and more so by coordinating this visit and engaging with others from my community.

This journey has not been without challenge, though. Over the past couple of months there have been a series of articles in major Pakistani newspapers both in the UK and Pakistan accusing me of being a spy, funded by Mossad with a mission to destroy the Pakistani people.

While this is hurtful and horrible for me and my family to experience, it came as no surprise.

Pakistan or within most Pakistani communities is not common and is not looked upon favourably.

But nevertheless I am determined to be a unique voice, rising above the parapet and ensuring that Israel receives its fair treatment within my community.

I was not always a supporter of Israel. I have joined the marches in both Pakistan and London where the crowds can be heard shouting the familiar slogans calling for “death to Israel, death to Jews.”

I have been drawn in by the incitement, hatred and indoctrination of those seeking only to bring about a time when Israel no longer exists.

But I have also met Israelis, studied at Israel’s institutions, and now, with thanks to the Zionist Federation, even been to the country.

As a result of these experiences, I can say unequivocally that the impression within my community and the reality on the ground could not be further from each other.

I am now proud to call myself a Zionist, and I am proud to have been able to visit the land of Israel.

I just wish as many others as possible from my community would take the perceived risk, ignore the anti-Israel rhetoric that is so often spewed out, and visit this wonderful country.

This delegation may have been the first of its kind from the UK, and possibly the world, but the PIA and the Zionist Federation intend to do many more like it and to ensure that this trip, and trips like it, are able to grow and thrive in the future.

NEW ISRAEL FUND ACTIVISM FELLOW

A

fter 10 years as a London divorce lawyer, I needed a break. Given how much time I spend thinking, reading and talking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I decided to head for Jerusalem.

I was concerned by the Israeli government’s policies and wanted to work with Israelis challenging the government’s approach and to increase my knowledge of the conflict.

In the West Bank, in particular in Area C [rural areas under Israeli control] with Israeli activists, it became clear that among all the political arguments, the day-to-day reality of those affected by the Israeli government’s policies is often overlooked.

The family of Zoaba, a farmer in the Jordan Valley whose family have lived on their land for more than 100 years, have since 1996 seen their homes demolished by the army multiple times, causing seven of his eight sons to move away, because the homes were built without permits

– almost impossible for Palestinians to obtain.

In the village of Um Al Khair in the South Hebron hills, many homes are under demolition orders for the same reason. Villagers describe living with the constant anxiety that their homes will be demolished.

In late August a new anxiety arose: nightly stone-throwing attacks from the adjacent settlement of Carmel. Staying in the village one September night, I too experienced lying awake in a tent listening to stones hit the ground metres away. Despite repeated calls to the Israeli police no one has been arrested and the attacks continue.

Earlier that night further calamity had struck: 35 years after Carmel’s establishment, the Israeli administration began fencing its official boundaries, far beyond its built-up area.

Soldiers stretched coils of razor wire across the hillside and within a few minutes the shepherds of Um Al Khair were cut off from grazing lands their families had worked for decades.

With much of their grazing land already built on by Carmel, it is becoming ever harder for the shepherds to maintain their livelihoods.

Shepherding is also becoming tougher in

the Jordan Valley. Ta’ayush activists accompany shepherds several times a week to deter settler violence and military interference.

Interactions with soldiers were frequent.

Declaring an area a closed military zone – an area temporarily closed for security reasons – was a frequent tactic to clear shepherds from an area.

There never seemed to be a genuine security concern, rather a desire disrupt the shepherds.

The Palestinian villages in which the shepherds live suffer from poverty and are unconnected to water or electricity supplies.

By contrast, Jewish outposts, built without permits, boast green lawns watered by sprin-

klers and almost never suffer demolitions.

At the outpost of Mevo’ot Jericho, I watched soldiers laugh and chat with the residents, pet their dogs, accept drinks and snacks, and confer closely with them. Despite their illegal status under Israeli law, in reality outposts enjoy the support of the Israeli administration.

More than 100 outposts mean less grazing land and more water resources diverted.

I believe in the need for a Jewish state; I also believe in the Jewish values of justice, compassion, and loving one’s neighbour as oneself.

The reality is it is not possible to maintain a 50-year military occupation in a moral way.

Supporters of Israel should reflect on that in the coming months.

Bosnia still not ready to confront its recent past MICHAEL NEWMAN

ged 17, Nedzad Avdic was herded together with other Bosniak men and boys, separated from their womenfolk, and taken to a field for execution. Miraculously, not only did the gunmen’s bullets fail to kill him, he managed to survive the aftermath by foraging in the forests surrounding Srebrenica.

Nedzad’s story underlines the importance and value of the work of the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) during the visit I recently made to Sarajevo and Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina organised by Remembering Srebrenica (srebrenica.org.uk).

The genocide perpetrated there in July 1995, during which some 8,700 (Muslim) Bosniaks were slaughtered in under one week, has eerie echoes of the Holocaust: the dehumanisation, degradation and persecution, forcing people into secluded areas and to wear white armbands to identify them as Muslims, the separation of

families and the brutal murder. Victims were duped so as not to create panic, with soldiers removing evidence of crimes.

Bosnia remains ravaged by the civil war, which claimed at least 35,000 lives. The three ethnic groups – Catholic Croats, Orthodox Serbs and Bosniaks – live almost autonomously.

Although the atrocities have been formally recognised as a genocide by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, this label is not accepted throughout Bosnia and the perpetrators continue to live alongside survivors.

The legal terminology of crimes against humanity and genocide, of which some of the perpetrators of the civil war were convicted, were coined after the Second World War in response to the Holocaust.

Families of the victims cannot leave flowers in remembrance and many places of execution are unmarked. Organisations such as Mothers of Srebrenica are unable to pursue justice, while the International Commission on Missing Persons, which tries to identify the victims from remains disinterred from mass graves, receives no state funding.

Ironically, some of the people we assist experienced part of the 47-month siege of Sarajevo during the break-up of the former Yugoslavia; having lived under fascism and

then communism, many fled here as refugees.

The old synagogue is just 150 metres from a mosque and a cathedral but is used only during the high holy days with congregants mindful of the Jewish presence in the city that stretches back to Ottoman times.

Giving visitors a taste of what life was like during the seige, at the Tunnel Museum, you can scuttle through part of an 800 metre stretch that provided a subterranean lifeline for those under daily attack from snipers.

At meetings of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, we have discussed whether the act of remembrance is demanding enough. While the word directs us to consider ways to create cultures of remembrance, it also inspires us to strengthen, advance, and promote Shoah education and research worldwide.

Our guide, Resad Trbonja, described the situation in Bosnia as an ‘interrupted peace’. Perhaps given its relatively recent history, the country appears not yet ready to come to terms with what happened, or to find space in the national consciousness for meaningful remembrance and to bring together ethnicities that share a country.

Imperial War Museum is being pointlessly precious ALEX BRUMMER

hen Britain’s Holocaust memorial next to Parliament was conceived, no one could have anticipated how relevant its location would be. Anti-Semitism in Britain long has been present and many of my generation have memories from our schooldays. There was my art master who proclaimed Jewish boys can’t paint, ignorant of Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Camille Pizarro, David Bomberg and others.

But what is different now is the ferocity of the anti-Semitic attitudes and the terror fear, which means Jewish venues have to be guarded from potential assailants. And, chillingly, the spectre of one of our major political parties preparing for government, with a leader in Jeremy Corbyn, who declines to disavow anti-Zionism and embraces Palestinian groups who threaten to wipe Israel off the map.

The Shoah memorial so close to the

However, not even the creation of a permanent Shoah memorial happens without friction. It may be part of the museum culture in Berlin, Washington, Sydney and elsewhere but, in London, controversy stalks the project.

Instead of facilities dedicated to the Shoah being dotted around London, from the Wiener Library to Imperial War Museum, a dedicated facility pulling together all the valuable archives and exhibits with a study centre seemed the right thing to do. Instead, we have a competition for a building that has attracted some of the finest architects and designers in the land, including Norman Foster, Daniel Libeskind and renowned Jewish sculptor Anish Kapoor and a facility that is arousing jealousy.

The Imperial War Museum (IWM), which is investing £33m in its Holocaust facilities for education, is wary of a rival exhibit in a prime spot just a mile away from its own archives.

resources, is always a mistake. There is a case, for instance, for merging the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and Holocaust Educational Trust, each sponsored by different government departments and each with their own respective staff teams.

There is a danger of doubling up happening again because the commission established by Cameron came up with a muddled concept – a memorial that also is an education centre.

I also think it’s an error to remember the Shoah in a war museum that glorifies weaponry when the allies famously refused to use that power to bomb the railways to Auschwitz. But at this stage, with key decisions taken, there is little point in the IWM becoming precious about a potential rival institution nearby. That is like the British Library objecting to the London Library.

What is important is that the memorial at Victoria Tower Gardens is built without interruption. And that it provides a sharp reminder to anti-Semites and anti-Zionists of what happens when the wickedness of mob rule becomes a dominant strand in politics.

Pupils from Etz Chaim Primary School in Mill Hill paid a visit to Jewish Care’s Clore Manor home in Hendon to celebrate Succot with residents.

Thirty Year 4 children had drinks and biscuits and shook the lulav and etrog in the succah. The school’s assistant headteacher, Sarah Osborne, said: “Our visit was such a valuable experience for the children. They enjoyed meeting the residents and singing to them. Many of them have never met anyone in their 90s before. They thought about how to speak to the residents and listened carefully as they told their stories.”

Jews and Muslims celebrated Succot together when The Al Khoei Islamic Centre hosted the Brondesbury Park Synagogue succah on Sunday.

JCoSS students Joshua Maltz, Danny Gordon, Asher Saipe, Freddie Fiber and Aden Hekster, who make up rock band Roycroft, performed to a packed crowd, who were also treated to crafts, games and refreshments. They raised more than £1,000, to be donated to the Myisrael charity Musicians of Tomorrow. Guitar player Maltz raised an additional £1,700 from the London to Windsor cycle challenge.

Ex-Sinai School teacher Zoe Melzack chopped 10 inches of her hair, raising £500 for the Princess Trust Charity.

Having taught children who used the free wig service, the 24-year-old from Borehamwood, said: “These children have lost the majority or their childhood to a horrific illness or condition. I know donating my hair won’t change this, however, it will make these beautiful princesses feel more confident and hopefully happier even if just for a short while.”

‘My mum used to put me to sleep in a cello case!’

Calista Robertson talks to Francine Wolfisz about her musical parents, her Jewish roots and how George Orwell came to her grandma’s house for Friday night dinner…

T

here’s always been something a little rock ‘n’ roll about Calista Robertson.

Born into a musical family, she was handed a violin aged three and a year later gave her first concert at the Royal Albert Hall – but, she confesses, spent the entire evening asleep on stage.

Such was the entrance of Calista – daughter of the late Paul Robertson, one of the founding members of the Medici String Quartet and Americanborn violinist Chika Yamauchi – into the world of music.

Her earliest memories comprise “crawling around on a piano” and being schlepped about rehearsals rooms and concert halls.

“When I was a two-year-old and my mum was studying her PhD, she used

to put me to sleep in her cello case,” she laughs. “I literally grew up within music and am so grateful for that.”

Now a talented pianist in her own right, the 29-year-old Royal Academy graduate is forging ahead with a career as a singer-songwriter and has just unveiled her new EP, Project: Love Me. Released under her dark alterego, Calista Kazuko (taken from her middle name), the sweeping tracks are edgy, enigmatic and full of high drama.

Critics compare her to Florence and the Machine, Tori Amos and Regina Spektor.

There are even shades of rebel Kate Bush. That’s unsurprising, given that Calista proudly comes from a long line of rebels. Her father, Paul, famously used to turn up at the Royal Academy for classes in his pyjamas, declined

the leader’s seat in the orchestra and argued with his teacher.

Paul’s parents were also out-and-out rebels. His mother, Esther, who grew up in a large Russian-Jewish family from the East End married a non-Jewish atheist. Frowned upon by both their families, the couple moved to Oxford and Paul thereafter spent a Bohemian childhood living in a caravan.

Despite turning away from the religious aspects of Judaism, Calista reveals she was especially close to her grandmother and that she “always had these incredible Yiddish phrases”.

She recalls: “My grandmother was always singing, always dancing. That’s my overwhelming memory of her, always dancing, cleaning and fussing.

part of our childhood and she basically brought us [Calista and her two siblings] up most of the time. I miss her a lot. She lived till she was 95 and was always with us. That was an ongoing joke. My parents would try to move to some other part of the country, but my granny would then move in next door!”

Calista also relished listening to her Jewish grandmother’s stories from life in the East End. “My grandmother’s father used to bring someone back every Friday night for dinner, that was the tradition.

“One day he brought a very nice, well-spoken man, who ended up staying under the stairs.

“He would help clean and really became a part of the family for a few weeks. As it actually turned out, it was George Orwell doing research for Down and Out in Paris and London!”

Paul, who passed away aged 63 last year, was for Calista her “greatest inspiration” and credits him with passing on

his musical talent and “a great sense of humour.”

She tells me: “He was so proud, the most open-mined person about everything and had the most love for everyone.”

Calista’s schedule is getting busier by the day. Apart from working on her album, produced by award-winning film producer Guy Dagul, she is also writing the music for a new play, Joy, which opens at the Theatre Royal Stratford East later this month.

Then of course, there’s Project: Love Me, which Calista describes as “getting the chance to turn into who I want to be in everyday life, but not allowed to be!”

She adds: “Calista Kazuko channels Norma Desmond, she’s completely shameless, fabulous and extravagant.

Helping stamp out hate An ambitious school project to commemorate Shoah victims has attracted worldwide attention after collecting a staggering 11 million stamps

nine-year-old school project set up to commemorate people who perished in the Holocaust has surpassed its unlikely goal to collect 11 million stamps – representing the lives of six million Jews and five million other victims of intolerance.

Hours before Kol Nidre earlier this month, community volunteers for the Holocaust Stamp Project at the Foxborough Regional Charter School in Massachusetts for children of kindergarten age up to 12 delivered some 7,000 cancelled stamps to the organisers.

The school’s student life adviser, Jamie Droste, who oversees community service learning for Foxborough, said the delivery brought the total to 11,011,979.

By chance, the goal-setting event took place on a day a television crew was at the school, in a suburb south of Boston, to report on the remarkable project.

The project began nine years ago in the fifth-grade classroom of Charlotte Sheer as a result of her students reading Number the Stars, the award-winning work of historical fiction by Lois Lowry set during the Holocaust.

By collecting 11 million stamps one stamp at a time, Sheer envisioned the project as a way to make tangible the incomprehensible magnitude of the genocide.

From its modest beginnings of collecting a few thousand of the tiny scraps of paper, the Holocaust Stamp Project has transformed into an all-volunteer community service component for the school’s high school students.

It has also attracted volunteers from the community who help with the time consuming process of counting and sorting the

Only a few of the school’s 1,300 students are Jewish, Droste added. The rest come from diverse cultures and backgrounds, with many from immigrant families whose lives are far removed from the events of the Holocaust. Some are from countries that have also experienced war or economic hardships. “The multicultural diversity makes the school strong,” she said.

In today’s political climate, students are aware of the hate in the world, Droste observed.

“This is one lesson that reaches all of them. We need to focus on peace and what is good and never forget the lives of those who were taken because of intolerance,” she said.

The project was recognised during the Yom Hashoah commemoration last spring with an award by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston.

Droste said she is hoping the collages and collection will find a permanent home at an institution or organisation where they can be on display.

Droste, who has directed the project since Sheer’s retirement about five years ago, said it was a way for students to learn about the importance of acceptance, tolerance and respect for diversity.

Over the years, as word of the project spread through reports in the media locally and in Israel and Germany, stamps have arrived from 47 states and 22 countries including Australia, Canada, the UK, Israel and Ireland.

Some, including many from Holocaust survivors or their families, are sent a few at a time while others, including some rare items, have been donated by collectors in batches of thousands.

As part of the project, students have transformed many of the stamps into 11 meticulously crafted and colourful collages whose intricate designs reflect a Holocaust-related theme.

It’s frum up north

Gateshead’s Jewish community has doubled since 2008 as thousands of Charedim head up the M1. Cnaan Liphshiz discovers why It’s lunchtime, and as they wait for their sandwiches at a kosher deli, five young Charedi Orthodox men have a lively discussion in Yiddish about Jewish texts.

Such a scene may be mundane in Jerusalem or New York, or even Antwerp or London.

But it’s not a sight that many outside Britain would associate with Gateshead, in a region that has seen its once large Jewish communities decline dramatically in recent decades.

In a unique set of circumstances, the city, which sits directly across the River Tyne from Newcastle, has become home to the UK’s fastestgrowing Jewish community. A tight-knit congregation of 8,000 Charedi residents now calls it home, and the community also has an unusual marriage of intellectualism with insularity and suspicion of foreign cultural influences.

Opinions on why the increase in size has happened vary. Locals cite everything from relatively low housing prices and the leadership of the local chief rabbi to Gateshead’s longer-standing qualities, notably a commitment to educating religious women alongside its yeshiva for boys, one of Europe’s largest.

Whatever the reason, residents and others agree the Gateshead community has achieved spectacular success in an unlikely setting. To Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush, the city has become “the Charedi equivalent of Oxford: a unique university town for the very devout; a citadel of Orthodox intellectualism”.

The most prestigious institution of education in town is the Gateshead Yeshiva, a seminary founded 88 years ago. It has a student body now of 300 aged roughly 15 to 23 who study 12 hours a day and live in dormitory rooms each of which is inhabited by three to four students.

The yeshiva’s reputation opened the door to at least five others that are widely regarded as excellent. This, in turn, created the nucleus of a community of teachers who live here permanently. And that has helped to make Gateshead into a major hub of intellectual activity in the Charedi world, alongside the town’s seven Jewish bookstores (the biggest, Lehmanns, is a well-known communal institution with 40,000 volumes in stock).

Several students said graduating from the

main yeshiva will improve not only their knowledge of the Talmud but their prospects of finding a quality shidduch, or match for a wife.

“Studying here will definitely affect who we marry,” said Yishai Rose, 20, of London. “A girl who wants someone who’s well-developed in his learning, a very, very good student, if you went here and did well here, the better girl you’ll get.”

This wasn’t always so, according to Joseph Schleider, a former leader of the Gateshead Jewish community and an historian who has studied it since it was set up in the 19th century

by Jews fleeing persecution in czarist Russia.

“In Lithuania, nobody wanted to marry a rabbi,” he said. To women who were not brought up inside the Charedi education system, It meant poverty. But in Gateshead, this began to change in the 1940s, when a seminary for women and girls opened. That provided “a nucleus of 400 girls who want only someone with rabbinical status”.

This was “a very powerful development that changed the face of the Gateshead Jewish community more than anything else,” Schleider said, and it laid the foundation for the community’s current “renaissance,” as he calls it. Another seminary for women opened in 1998.

Still, Gateshead had a far smaller Jewish community less than a decade ago, when there was one small kosher bake shop and little spiritual activity outside its main synagogue, which is behind the yeshiva. It did not have the amenities to pull in young couples or retain yeshiva graduates wanting to start families.

Those started popping up shortly after the arrival in 2008 of its current chief rabbi, New Jersey-born Shraga Feivel Zimmerman, known here simply as “the Rov”, a Yiddish pronunciation of the word rabbi.

“Before the Rov, things had been the same for many, many years,” said Shimon Guttentag, a senior administrator at the yeshiva, adding that the change has improved the quality of life for Jews “tremendously.”

Schleider said Zimmerman — who declined to be interviewed, citing a busy schedule — opened up the community, which Schleider said was more averse than it is now to interacting with the outside.

“For all of the many years we’ve been here at Gateshead, the Jewish community was essentially isolated,” Schleider said in an interview last month, referring to the insular attitudes. He also noted men wearing jeans are frowned upon by some in his deeply conservative community.

Schleider said the insularity changed somewhat under Zimmerman’s leadership, as he “decided he’s not going to be buried in the synagogue but be a community-wide rabbi”.

Gateshead is one of the few places in Britain with a large Jewish community where

anti-Semitism is not a primary concern. The Gateshead Yeshiva doesn’t have any guards or even a perimeter fence.

“We are mindful of the situation today but thankfully we’ve not had serious incident and it’s not a major problem affecting us,” said Rabbi Gershon Miller, a senior educator at the yeshiva.

Schleider said part of this reality is the relative scarceness of “ethnic populations” — a reference to Muslims.

The combination of all these factors and more — including the proximity of Newcastle International Airport, an important amenity for Charedi families with large numbers of relatives in Israel, the US and beyond — has transformed Gateshead from an old, sleepy community to a magnet for these members.

Progress, however, has come at a price, according to Schleider, who said he misses the more personal nature of the community when it was smaller. Whereas Zimmerman’s predecessor, Bezalel Rakow, who led the community for 40 years until his death in 2003, was “like our father”, Zimmerman is more “an executive director”, he added.

“The community has seen tremendous growth, but has also become big, impersonal and less old-worldly for people like me.”

Hvar great time!

Charlotte Hardy travels to the idyllic Croatian island and discovers the world’s second oldest Sephardic Synagogue in Split

C

roatia, famed for its stunning natural beauty, stone-fronted city walls, glorious promenades, and fascinating history, had unsurprisingly enticed me back once again.

With a friend in tow, this summer’s locations within this Eastern European gem were Split, our initial base for two nights, followed by the blissful island of Hvar for seven.

With rave reviews that weren’t wrong, we booked the modest yet delightful Apartment Grašo, (£75pp for two nights) located in the heart of Split. It came with traditional high ceilings, cool stone walls, cosy features and ocean views.

We spent the first day getting acquainted with the history and architecture of the Diocletian Palace, commissioned for the Roman Emperor at the turn of the 4th century AD. It is here that the world’s second oldest (still in use) Sephardic synagogue is tucked away inside the Palace’s western wall. Built in the 16th century, it is situated inside the second floor of two converted medieval houses.

This important site is included in the privately-organised Jewish Heritage Tour of Split City, lasting approximately three hours.

The afternoon took a more adventurous turn as we scaled the dizzying heights of the Belfryan instantly recognisable symbol of the city.

At just 20 kuna per person (around £2.50) you can access a snap-happy range of scenes over the rooftops, all the way up, with the best

vantage point of the city.

The second day was spent exploring the shoreline, under expert advice from our accommodation host. Despite Split being Croatia’s second largest city, and the country not being famed for soft sandy beaches, we found several to meet most people’s needs, within walking distance of the apartment.

The more sedate of the two was Kastelet beach, approximately 25 minutes’ walk from the city centre – and the journey was stunning – via a sea-fronted path and dramatic rock formations. It appears popular with locals, who lay out on the pebbles, as well as families enjoying the shallow waters and shaded restaurant on-site.

The second, Bacvice, is said to be Split’s most popular beach, located 1km from the city centre past the ferry port. Locals and foreigners alike can be found here playing picigin. This sporting activity, which is famed for originating in the city during the First World War, was adapted by swimmers’ failed attempts at playing water polo in the shallow waters.

If that all sounds far too energetic, you’ll also find glorious deckchairs (in our experience, sunbathing on stones has a 20 minutes’ expiration point) and devouring the ice cream from one of the many colourful stands dotted along the seafront.

On day three, we departed by Jadrolinija ferry to Hvar, taking just over an hour-and-ahalf to reach our destination. Docking in the

famous port of Hvar Old Town, we were greeted with a stunning vista of swaying yachts in turquoise waters, contrasted by a hillside dominated by orange rooftops, winding cobbled streets and lush woodland beyond.

We were staying a 10-minute walk from Hvar Old Town.

Navigating 50kg worth of luggage up a steep hillside and into our apartment was challenging, but arriving at sunset, stepping out onto our balcony overlooking the sea and islands beyond drenched in a golden glow, made our exertion worth it.

Being savvy with our budget, I had booked a private one-bedroom apartment belonging to Earther’s hostel, but located away from the main building. It was a steal at around £160pp for seven nights, including free pancakes at breakfast.

Hvar offered an almost overwhelming array of things to do. The one-day Krka waterfalls tour provided the opportunity to swim in arguably Croatia’s all-time greatest national parks.

Taking to the waves, you could kayak from island to island, or speedboat over to the blue caves.

Another favourite activity of mine was meandering the streets of the Old Town, finding shade in the alleys, snacking on local fish and tapas, and exploring the ancient history of the city inside the castle walls.

My all-time travel goal of recent years was achieved when we sailed to the island next door, Brac. Our destination was Zlatni Rat, a spit of land famed for its white pebbled beach jutting out into the sea.

Upon reaching Bol Harbour, we embarked on a 30-minute pine tree-lined amble, via a quaint fruit and veg market, picking up a

ginormous watermelon en route (which was not such a good idea for the 2km long walk).

Unlike most beaches where I’d lie down and close my eyes for the day, I didn’t want to shut them for a second here. The mix of bright green and blue water, contrasting starkly with the white stone, and the flamboyant kite surfers flitting between the luxury yachts floating out at sea, made for an enchanting scene you wished would never end.

But end it did, and back in Hvar Old Town, as two single ladies, our trip wasn’t going to be complete without a day out at Hula Hula, the apparently infamous beach bar.

Playing laid-back tunes and perched on the edge of the shoreline, the location was made for sharing a picturesque sunset with a mojito, among a friendly European crowd. And for those who want to keep the party going, take a boat from Hvar port to Carpe Diem, where you won’t return until sunrise.

Before we knew it, it was time to kiss Hvar goodbye and fly away from an unforgettable holiday, completed on a shoestring budget with memories no money could buy.

Torah For Today Gifted people being judged differently for their crimes

BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN As soon as we finish reading the book of Devarim, we seem to hit the reset (or rewind – remember that?) button and start Bereshit again. In truth we neither reset, nor do we rewind.

Rather, we revisit familiar stories with a fresh perspective.

Adam is created in God’s image, imbued with a divine soul that gives him (and us) the capacity of free will, rational thought and intelligent speech. Unlike the angels who are purely spiritual, or the animals that are purely physical, he (and we) are a unique blend of both and is therefore held accountable for our actions.

This theme repeats itself numerous times in our parsha, most notably when Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden fruit (which, by the way, in rabbinic thought was almost anything but an apple) and with Cain’s brutal murder of his brother Abel.

The notion of free choice is so fundamental to the essence of mankind that it is hinted to in Adam’s very name. ‘Adam’ comes from the world adama, the earth from which he was formed, but it is also related to the word adameh, to be like God, in whose image he was created. This tension is our eternal challenge.

In addition to drawing our attention to this tension and challenge, the Torah provides tools and solutions. It is the Almighty’s one-time written communication with mankind (the word Torah comes from the word horaah, which means ‘instruction’).

The Torah, which is often referred to as Torat Chayim, presents itself as instructions for living. Every detail of every story, every law contains within it a life lesson to achieve this goal. Our challenge is to invest the time to be able to read it as such.

Our sages teach that King David was expected to be stillborn and was given 70 years to live off Adam’s life, reducing Adam’s lifespan from 1,000 years to 930.

Therefore, when David sinned with Bathsheba, he was spared death as he was alive only by special decree.

Does this mean that there is one rule for some and another rule for others? In fact, David was punished, and while he did not lose his life for his adulterous act, he was sentenced to a life of penance and physical tribulation.

Furthermore, David’s sentence was passed by a heavenly decree for a case that never made it to a courthouse, and so was judged on a basis not to be found in the Torah.

The Torah states that no-one should be favoured in judgment, and that the poor and the rich receive the same consideration at law.

Therefore, judges should cover their eyes when seated in court, by drawing down a tallit over their faces.

No judge, however disciplined, can hope to resist being swayed by the appearance of a well-turned-out defendant.

Crucially, there is no one so gifted or blessed that he or she should warrant escaping corrective punishment.

The danger in that is twofold – socially, as Isaiah the prophet stated in that the widows receive no justice and the orphan’s argument does not even reach the judges’ ears – and for tikkun olam, here public policy, that the entire justice system is compromised.

While mitigating circumstances or repentance should reduce punishment, it

should not cancel it altogether, so that, as the Torah states, the people should hear, and see, and desist from crime.

No commandment to cover your head

Have we lost the climate change battle?

BY RABBI LEAH JORDAN We all know committed Jews of all genders who wear kippot and other head coverings all the time, some of the time or not at all. What lies behind these varying practices and what is the ideal today?

Shockingly, for something so central to Judaism, there is nothing in the Torah. The only possible related Biblical commandment is to “not follow their ways” about non-Jews.

In the Talmud, there is a sense that people may have worn wrapped functional head coverings, but that these were not required for piety’s sake.

During the era of the rabbis, there was a notion that head covering was spiritually respectful, though most Jews were not doing this all the time.

Only in Shulchan Aruch, the 16thcentury codification of Jewish law, do we see the firm rule to cover the heads when invoking God’s name.

The practice of wearing a head covering always didn’t enter Jewish communities until the 1600s in Poland – with the idea that it would proudly

distinguish you as Jewish. In the early days of Liberal Judaism, we adopted the ways of the wider European gentile society, which did not cover heads even in houses of worship.

But as our movement developed, we began to re-understand the practice as something that, first, might help focus our internal spirituality and, second, might be a mark of Jewish pride. Kippot are now much more abundant.

Finally, gender identity complicates this choice. The notion of covering one’s head for piety was not probably originally gendered – and yet many more male-identified people wear kippot than female-identified.

BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS Leading climate change campaigners claim that unless carbon emissions peak in the next three years and then fall steeply, we will have lost the battle against climate change, or at least of keeping global warming below 2°C. So it would seem that there is hope; the battle is not lost – yet it needs warriors urgently.

Are we sleepwalking through our comfortable lives, with too many excuses to make real changes? If we are to make change, we most certainly need to work collaboratively as individuals, families and communities, as well as organisations and businesses.

This also applies across denominations. Excitingly, synagogues from across the movements, including Alyth, Finchley Progressive Synagogue, Finchley Reform Synagogue, New North London Synagogue and Muswell Hill United, are pioneering an Eco-Synagogue programme with green teams in each community.

This echoes the Eco-Church

project, and the UK’s first purposebuilt eco-mosque in Cambridge. In this way, we may begin to see faith communities leading the way in making changes as a community.

Jewish Action on Climate Change is right behind Eco-Synagogue and works hard to develop a network of Jewish activists with clear and achievable targets, as well as alongside Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s Sustainable Development Commission.

Arguably, we spend our time fighting to keep nature out of our homes and cities and, when we

vanish, nature happily reclaims that which we fought to establish. We need the world more than it needs us. But is this really a Jewish issue?

Whether you turn to Torah or the rabbinic commentators Midrash or Talmud, Judaism expects us to look after our world and its resources.

While Genesis suggests in this week’s portion that we are to rule the earth, it also uses the language of ‘tending’ the earth.

Midrash expands on the Torah, insisting in Kohelet Rabbah: “See to it that you don’t spoil and destroy God’s world, for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.”

Dear George You absolutely can as mediation does not require there to be any legal proceedings in existence and is ideally suited as an alternative means of resolving disputes between parties.

The advantages of going straight to mediation are several. The most obvious is the considerable saving of legal costs and the efficient use of both parties’ time.

Additionally, in your case, the key advantage is that the mediation can be used not simply to resolve the dispute between yourself and your builder, but also to ensure that you maintain an ongoing relationship going forward, which can only be a good

thing as your building works progress.

I suggest you write to your builder suggesting the option of going to mediation. Be positive and point out the advantages for both sides.

If your builder is in agreement, you can move to jointly appointing a mediator. There are many skilled mediators who will help you through the process and work with both parties both pre-mediation hearing and throughout the mediation day to achieve a settlement of your dispute.

Early stage mediations, as they are known, are becoming more common, and if you do go forward with this, you will be part of a growing trend.

MGBSFL Two goals from player-manager Mitch Young helped FC Team claim their first league win of the season in Division Two as they beat Hertswood Vale 4-2. Richard Salmon and Jon Breger also found the back of the net, with Young saying: “Moving forward from here everything will click into gear and we will rise up the league.”

Faithfold B claimed their first win as Yehuda Emmanuel and JJ Marrache doubles, together with David Kizneris’ strike saw them beat Boca Jewniors 5-3. Straw Hat Pirates completed a trio of first wins as Ben Mandell’s double and Aron Gale’s strike saw them beat Temple Fortune B 3-1.

Catford & Bromley and Fairlop drew 1-1, Jamie Sinai and Bradley Gayer scoring respectively, while Zach Cohen’s hat-trick, along with strikes from Adam Lisberg and Harry Moss saw Mill Hill Dons win 5-1 at Raiders C. Jewish runners went the extra miles last weekend as they took part in the Royal Parks Marathon. Attracting a field of 16,000 runners to the 13.1 mile route, Norwood’s 18 representatives raised more than £10,000, while Jewish Care’s eight fundraisers raised £5,500. Kisharon benefitted by £10,000 from its nine runners, Camp Simcha’s quintet raised almost £8,000, while World Jewish Relief’s six runners raised £11,500 for the charity.

Tournament title as easy as ABC Team ABC tore down the Tuesday Tornadoes as they won the 2017 Maccabi GB Community Netball. Attracting 80 players to JFS, the event was run in association with International Woman’s Day and the Sport England initiative This Girl Can. MGB Community Netball Event Coordinator Talia Fennessy said: “This was a fantastic ladies event which saw teams of all abilities take part in.

It was so great to see so many members of the community get active whether they were Maccabiah athletes or they hadn’t picked up a netball since their schools days.”
