Hate numbers falling Anti-Semitic attitudes in the UK have fallen slightly since 2015 and are now below those in France and Germany, a new poll from the US-based AntiDefamation League claims.

The findings, published in the ADL’s fourth Index of Anti-Semitism, follow studies into the attitudes of people in the three countries into the extent they believe in antiSemitic stereotypes, such as Jewish power and influence.

In the UK, the ADL found ten percent of those polled held anti-Semitic attitudes, a fall from figures released in 2015. It also found far fewer people now believe Jews care more for Israel than Britain.

More than a quarter of

respondents felt there was now more anti-Semitism being voiced in British politics, with 36 percent concerned about left-wing antiSemitism and 40 percent worried about anti-Semitism from the extreme right.

While almost a third still believed Jews were more loyal to Israel than they were to the UK, this number has fallen substantially from 41 percent of British respondents answering similarly in 2015.

There was also a stark comparison with Germany on where anti-Semitism comes from: 26 percent of Germans thought it stemmed from Jews’ behaviour but only 14 percent of Brits agreed.

In other findings, one in five British respondents felt Jews still talk too much about the Holocaust; in France almost a third thought so.

In all three countries, those who felt Israel’s actions affected their thinking about Jews were more likely to hold anti-Semitic attitudes.

Equally, the more religiously observant were more likely to be anti-Semitic.

“It is clear anti-Semitic attitudes are now less prevalent in the UK than Germany or France,” said a Community Security Trust spokesman.

“It is also clear anti-Semitic attitudes are falling in the UK, based on 2015 data.

“However, ten percent of the UK population still harbour some form of antiSemitic view, which is unacceptable.”

DANON NEW UN VICE-PRESIDENT Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations has said it is “an honour” to have been elected vice-president of the UN General Assembly, which meets in September.

Danny Danon, a rightwing settlement advocate whose candidacy for Israeli ambassador to Brazil was rejected by the South American country, announced his election to one of 21 vice-president positions on Wednesday. “It is an honour to represent Israel in this position,” he said.

“We have proven once again that Israel is ready and able to serve in significant positions in the UN and attempts to block this progress will not succeed.”

Danon is the fourth Israeli to serve as a vice-president at the United Nations, former Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor also having done so, but last year Danon became the first Israeli to head up a

permanent UN committee, taking charge of legal affairs.

In his new role, which commences for a one-year fixed-term in September, he will chair General Assembly meetings in lieu of the president, input into agenda-setting and oversee “the rules and decorum during the sessions”.

US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, who has won applause for sharply criticising the international body’s bias against Israel, is due to visit the Jewish state next week, where she will meet political leaders and visit a UN peacekeeping operation.

Trump will keep embassy in Tel Aviv Donald Trump is due to delay the decision to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, ahead of Friday’s deadline to do so.

The US president will delay the controversial relocation, diplomatic sources told Reuters, after Trump met Israeli and Palestinian leaders last month.

Announcing an embassy in Jerusalem to coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the Six Day War had

been mooted as a strong possibility by analysts, but Trump is now expected to kick his campaign pledge into the long grass.

It follows a regional tour, during which Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, sounding surprisingly upbeat about the chances of a peace deal.

Such a deal would likely involve regional partners mostly drawn from Sunni

Muslim states, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, whose leaders would not take kindly to such a symbolically explosive gesture on the part of the US. Asked whether Trump would agree to the embassy’s move, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said: “Once we have a decision, we’ll put it out,” adding there would be “something very soon on that”.

Relocating the US

embassy to Jerusalem – the seat of Israeli government – is hugely controversial because Palestinians insist on East Jerusalem being the capital of their future state, whereas Israeli leaders say the city must remain undivided.

All recent US presidents have shunned calls to move the US embassy, but Trump had stridently committed to doing so, most notably at the AIPAC policy conference in 2016.

An Orthodox rabbi has called the head of the Spanish and Portuguese community “more poisonous than Louis Jacobs” following his controversial lecture on male homosexuality.

I’ll be Jewish community’s champion

With just six days to go until the most important election of my lifetime, I am determined to build a country that works for everyone; a country where no matter who you are, or where you’re from, you can achieve your goals.

The Jewish community has made an immense contribution to British life, whether it’s in business, the arts or the charitable sector – Jewish people in Britain today set an example to us all. We have some fantastic Jewish candidates standing for the Conservatives at this election, and many more like me who are not Jewish, but understand and support both the Jewish community and Israel. I’m proud we’re a party which has representatives from every community in Britain, from council members right through to government ministers.

I know there are very real concerns in the Jewish community at this election time, not least what a newly-elected government will do about anti-Semitism. We will always take a zero-tolerance approach to such hatred, in contrast to what we have regrettably seen from Jeremy Corbyn.

In December the Conservative Government formally adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of anti-Semitism. Sir Eric Pickles, the UK Government’s special envoy for post-Holocaust Issues,

led the way in getting the IHRA to agreement in the first place, and Britain was one of the first countries to adopt the definition. We will also stand firm against terrorism, whether it occurs in Manchester or Tel Aviv. In our manifesto for this election, we have pledged to establish a Commission for Countering Extremism to root out extremism and anti-Semitism in society.

We will push forward with our plan to tackle hate crime committed on the basis of religion.

We are also working with the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation to deliver our commitment to a new National Holocaust Memorial and

associated learning centre in London.

We have continued to stand up for Israel. We have refused to support one-sided and unfair criticism of Israel internationally, whether at the Paris Peace Conference in January or in voting at the UN Human Rights Council, UNESCO, and even the WHO this spring.

The UK is Israel’s second-largest trading partner and the country’s number one destination for investment in Europe, with more than 300 Israeli companies operating here.

We have taken firm action to stop counterproductive and damaging municipal boycotts

against Israel and will legislate on this.

We should celebrate and build on that economic relationship, condemning any attempt to undermine that. We have defended the right of Jews to practice shechita, and we will continue to protect methods of religious slaughter.

We will continue to fund the Jewish Community Protective Security Grant with £13.4m in this financial year. This will help protect Jewish schools, colleges, nurseries and synagogues.

We have opened seven new Jewish schools across the country under the free school programme, and we have a manifesto commitment to replace the unfair and ineffective inclusivity rules which limit, new, oversubscribed faith schools from admitting more than half their intake on the basis of religion. I know the Jewish community leadership has welcomed our plans, and I am keen to see more high-quality Jewish faith schools being set up by the community.

The stark reality is that every vote for any other party at this election is a vote to send Jeremy Corbyn one step closer to Downing Street. I pledge to stand firm on the issues which matter specifically to the Jewish community, and to be your champion in the next Government.

I have been strong and consistent in my approach to these issues, in contrast to Jeremy Corbyn and his team. That is the stark reality of the choice we face and the choice we must focus on over the next week.  Editorial comment, page 16

Corbyn condemns Barnett abuse Jeremy Corbyn has insisted he won’t tolerate abuse after BBC Radio presenter Emma Barnett was subjected to antiSemitic slurs from his supporters following an interview with the Labour leader.

Corbyn took to airwaves this morning to launch Labour’s childcare policy, but Emma Barnett was left scrambling to put a cost on the proposal under repeated questioning from the Women’s Hour presenter.

In the minutes that followed, a number of his supporters attacked Barnett online. One accused

her of being a “Zionist shill” while another suggested she had spent much of her early career writing “Zionist drivel”.

Corbyn didn’t explicitly use the word anti-Semitic but said: “It is totally, absolutely and completely unacceptable for anyone to throw abuse at with Corbyn anyone else. Under no circumstances should anyone throw abuse because of the job they’re doing.”

The Labour leader added that anyone who puts themselves up for office should be ready to take any questions.

Offord denies ignoring widow The widow of a Jewish man from London who died from a terminal illness earlier this year has accused her local Tory candidate of “ignoring” her late husband’s concerns about future financing for his family.

The Conservative Matthew Offord, who is standing to retain his seat in Hendon, denied that he had ignored the dying man’s plea, but this was met with disdain by the man’s widow during an emotional exchange at an election hustings at Mill Hill synagogue.

The late Jewish man, known only as ‘Alan’, twice emailed Offord about a recent government rule change to bereavement support, which he said would cost his family £50,000.

He died of cancer one month ago.

At the hustings, Offord said he did reply but this was strenuously denied by the widow, who was in the audience when the issue was raised.

Corbyn rejects claim he honoured terrorist Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has flatly rejected reports he honoured one of the terrorists involved in the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Insisting he had dedicated his life to the search for peace, he said he was “absolutely not” honouring Atef Bseiso when he laid a wreath at a Palestinian conference in Tunisia.

Corbyn travelled to the country in October 2014, less than a year before becoming Labour leader, and attended a ceremony where wreaths were laid for those killed by an Israeli air raid on the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and on the graves of people “killed by Mossad agents in Paris”.

The Sunday Times reported that was an apparent reference to Bseiso, a PLO agent who was involved in the hostagetaking and massacre at the 1972 Olympics which killed 11 members of the Israeli team.

Asked if he was honouring Bseiso, Corbyn said: “Absolutely not. We were searching for peace in the Middle East.

The only way we achieve peace is by bringing people together.”

The Labour leader used ‘inclusive language’ when referring to Hamas

In a report for the Morning Star, Corbyn wrote about the visit to Tunisia, stating: “Wreaths were laid at the graves of those who died on that day and on the graves of others killed by Mossad agents in Paris in 1991.”

Simon Johnson, chief executive of

the Jewish Leadership Council, said: “At first sight, attending a wreath-laying ceremony for a known terrorist, who led one of the most notorious acts of international terrorism, the attack on the Munich Olympics, would appear to be beyond the pale.”

Meanwhile, Corbyn has defended his description of Palestinian terror group Hamas as “friends” during a general election TV grilling on Monday. The Labour leader insisted he was using “inclusive language” to promote a “two-state solution”, when he made the remarks during a parliamentary meeting in 2009.

During the live TV interview, hosted

by Faisal Islam and Jeremy Paxman, Corbyn was probed on links to the IRA and Hamas. He defended his description of the latter as “friends”, saying the way in which he used it “promoted the need for dialogue between Israel and all aspects of Palestine including Fatah as well as Hamas”.

On the IRA, the Labour leader claimed he had “openly supported the IRA in the past” by attending a commemoration for eight IRA members killed by the SAS in Loughgall.

The Jewish population of Harrow East may be declining but it’s still an important constituency for the community, encompassing locations such as Stanmore Synagogue and JFS. This is traditionally a semi-marginal seat, but Bob Blackman increased his majority by 5.7 percent to 24,668 at the 2015 poll, 4,757 votes ahead of Labour. Candidate interviews by Marc Shoffman

ADAM BERNARD LIBERAL DEMOCRATS The Liberal Democrats came fourth in 2015 and activist Adam Bernard is looking to reverse the party’s fortunes.

A research fellow at Queen Mary University, Bernard says there should be more MPs with scientific expertise.

He explains: “I’ve been fortunate to grow up in an era more or less free from extremist nationalism, but it seems clear to me now that this isn’t going to continue without politicians who make it continue.

“At a personal level, I’d like to see more MPs with scientific expertise. I think some of the recent failures in areas such as internet regulation and drugs policy could have been avoided with more scientifically-literate decision-makers.”

He was among the many Liberal Democrat candidates who supported the sacking of David Ward, adding: “As a liberal party, we abhor anti-Semitism, along with bigotry of all varieties. We are proposing that when crimes are motivated by such hatred, this should always be treated as an aggravating factor.

“While we don’t believe it’s the place of government to police people’s beliefs, we will work closely with non-governmental anti-extremism organisations to encourage active harmony between communities.”

ELECTION HUSTINGS CANCELLED Two election hustings planned by the London Jewish Forum were cancelled this week after campaigning was suspended.

All political parties announced they would halt campaigning in the wake of Monday night’s Manchester terrorist atrocity.

Alyth Synagogue was set to host its second hustings in two days for Finchley and Golders Green, while candidates for Ilford North were also scheduled to go head-to-head as part of a series organised by the London Jewish Forum in partnership with Jewish News.

Adrian Cohen, chairman of the London Jewish Forum said: “Following the terrible events, our thoughts at the London Jewish Forum are with the people of the great City of Manchester.

“It is entirely appropriate that we postpone hustings events in Ilford North and Finchley & Golders Green in respect for what has happened. Our thoughts go out to those people and families affected by this horrific terror attack.

We hope to reschedule the hustings when the campaign resumes.”

Bob Blackman is looking to secure a third term from voters and, as a vice-chairman of the all-party parliamentary groups for Israel and anti-Semitism, he feels he is best placed to represent the community’s needs.

He says: “I could quote being in Israel at the time of Operation Protective Edge as demonstrating my support for Israel, or leading a debate in parliament on the rights of the Jewish community regarding the practice of shechita as being important moments.

“I remain 100 percent committed to supporting Israel as a Jewish state against all the critics and also in defending the Jewish way of life within our multi-religious community.”

Blackman highlights the UK government’s rebuking of the UN Human Rights Council in March for anti-Israel bias as evidence of support for the community and Jewish State.

“I feel this marks a strengthening of the partnership that has historically existed between Israel and the UK, but which some previous governments have taken for granted,” he explains.

“As well as leading a proudly pro-Israel government, Theresa May is the only leader capable of taking the strong stance that will make it clear that anti-Semitism has no place in our society.”

Schools and security are hot topics in most constituencies and Blackman has expressed support for more faith schools after JFS increased places due to overwhelming demand and says he would want to see the new government commit to making a pool of security funding readily available specifically for the prevention of anti-Semitic crimes.

Blackman adds: “This remains a hot-button topic that deserves far more attention that it is getting. It is absolutely crucial that the Jewish community in the UK receives protection and that schools and synagogues are given adequate support as a priority.”

NAVIN SHAH LABOUR Former Harrow Council leader and a London Assembly member, Navin Shah has been part of the fabric of the constituency for the past 40 years.

He knows the importance of faith schools, having supported the first-ever government-funded Hindu school in Harrow.

Shah says he has been concerned with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s approach to tacking anti-Semitism but insists the community can still trust the party, adding that he would support the expulsion of Ken Livingstone over the Hitler and Zionism remarks.

He says he would support letting parents of voluntary-aided schools claim Gift Aid and put security funding on a firmer financial footing.

He adds: “We are entering the most decisive period of decision-making in my lifetime in negotiating a final Brexit deal. I respect the outcome of the referendum result, but if elected I will not support a hard Brexit which will hurt the people of Harrow.

“I believe in a fairer immigration system which maintains our status as an open and welcoming society while understanding that careful controls are required which will benefit other Europeans who work here and Commonwealth citizens from further afield.”

On a sunny morning in Ilford North, the traffic roars down Woodford High Road towards Gants Hill roundabout.

The campaign offices of Labour’s Wes Streeting and Conservative Lee Scott are just a bus stop away from each other – but the two men could not be further apart.

Just two years ago, Streeting, the onetime president of the National Union

of Students, caused a huge upset in this constituency by overturning Lee Scott’s majority of 5,404 to snatch the seat by a tiny majority of 589 votes.

Now Scott, 61, who held Ilford North for 10 years, is seeking to regain his seat – and he thinks the tide of unpopularity trailing Labour candidates because of the Jeremy Corbyn factor may give him impetus.

Despite Streeting, 34, being one of the most outspoken critics of his own leader, Scott continues to refer to his opponent as “Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour candidate”,

a description Streeting himself predicted Scott would use.

And despite Scott, a father-of-five who suffered from major anti-Semitic attacks in the 2010 election, saying only weeks before Theresa May’s snap election announcement that he would not stand again, he is back on the campaign trail after consultation with “the boss” – his wife.

He says he feels a sense of unfinished business but when I put it to him that with as narrow a loss as 589 votes he might be entitled to feel “I was robbed”, Scott shakes his head. “I lost, simple as that”, he says.

“Now it’s time to move on.”

For both men, 2017 is a very different sort of election from 2015. In 2015 Scott, a former campaign director of UJIA, was the incumbent MP in Ilford North, a son of the constituency who lives and works locally.

Streeting was by his own admission an “unknown quantity”.

Now the situation is reversed, and it is Streeting who is the incumbent and Scott who is the challenger. But on the day we met, there was one thing in common – neither was able to campaign because of the national suspension, agreed by all parties, imposed after the bombing atrocity in Manchester only days before.

There is an air of suspended animation about both men, plainly itching to get back on the doorsteps. Each reports positive responses – Scott, in fact, says he was persuaded to run one more time after receiving “hundreds” of emails urging him to try to win the seat back once the election had been called.

But Streeting says: “I actually have a record to stand on now. I have been heartened by the number of people who say they will vote for me on the basis of my work as a constituency MP.” Ilford North’s voters, he says, include Corbyn fans “and those who say they wouldn’t vote Labour because of Corbyn, but are prepared to vote for me because of my local work. It’s a really mixed picture.

Ilford North is marginal in every sense – it’s about 50/50 on Remain or Leave”.

Streeting is remarkably frank about his biggest problem, particularly when it comes to Jewish voters. It is Corbyn, of course. “I’ve been really moved by some of the conversations I’ve had with Jewish voters in the last weeks.

“On one hand, there is a warmth toward me that wasn’t there two years ago, and that’s based on my record as an MP. People have seen that I’ve stayed true to my word: I’ve been one of the leading campaigners against anti-Semitism, willing to put my head above the parapet and tell a few home truths to the Labour Party.

“I’ve taken on Ken Livingstone and shown a real leadership role as co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Committee on British Jews and as vice chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Antisemitism. But there is no doubt that Corbyn has been the biggest hurdle, whether it’s at the school gates at Clore Tikvah and Ilford Jewish Primary School, or at Sinclair House or Chabad Lubavitch.

“There has been real anxiety about what Corbyn stands for, how he has tackled anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, and for some people that hurdle is just too much and they won’t vote Labour. For others, they will stick with me, and I recognise that is quite an ‘ask’ after how the Labour Party has behaved in the last two years – and I am very touched by that.”

Of his opponent, Streeting says: “If people elect Lee Scott, they will be electing another Conservative MP to make up Theresa May’s numbers, who will nod through whatever she is doing in Parliament. If I am returned, that makes a huge difference because Jewish voters know they will have a champion who will take on anti-Semitism within society and within the Labour Party.”

For Streeting, the biggest challenge is “preventing a Tory landslide”, although in fairness it is probably more holding on to his slender majority.

A bus stop away Lee Scott, in campaign offices tucked away near Chabad’s Ilford headquarters, says: “This election is far more about the stability of Theresa May than the chaos of Jeremy Corbyn”.

But he can’t resist getting a dig in at Corbyn by saying that the election is also about national issues, “rather than who people want as their local candidate”. For good measure, Scott says he is very proud of having Theresa May as his party leader, something he doesn’t feel Streeting is able to say of his own leader.

Scott says he enjoys helping people, “and I believe I still have something to offer”.

Though he himself voted on the Remain side in the EU referendum, he has since changed his mind and said as much weeks before the election was called, something which may well play well on Brexiteer doorsteps in the constituency.

Scott is also helped – though he does look a little embarrassed by it – by the decision of UKIP not to pick a candidate to run in the Ilford North contest.

The party took 4,500 votes in 2015, but Scott insists that its 2017 decision does not mean UKIP is supporting him (Streeting, unsurprisingly, says it does).

JEWISH COMMUNITY HAS NO CHIEF WHIP

Growing up with a father who was an MP, envelopes would arrive weekly containing instructions from the chief whip. The instructions came in the form of the title of the Parliamentary debate accompanied by long, thick black lines – the “whip”.

Anything less important would have a single line, more critical votes would have two lines.

Most vital of all was the three line whip, three black lines – you had no choice but to be there to vote with your party.

The chief whip would ensure everyone was aware and acted on what was in the collective interest.

In the Jewish community, there is no chief whip.

Our community is not one sided. There is no Jewish whip because we are a community of diverse opinions, of debate.

The very idea that there exists a Jewish way to vote is, to me, totally at odds with the

vibrant spectrum of opinion in any Jewish space in this country.

Some believe that Jews should be corralled around one united political opinion as dissent might weaken us and how we’re seen.

It is then only right that there is no such thing as a way Jews must vote.

Politics change quickly. At some points, Labour has been named as “good for the Jews”.

At other times, Conservatives have held the same moniker.

Many Jews say it is only logical to support Labour values. Equally, others say it is logical to vote Conservative, because of concerns over the Labour leadership and the behaviour towards the community and Israel.

A Jewish vote is not just disingenuous, against the idea of debate which is in our intellectual and communal DNA, it would be both “bad for the Jews” and bad for Britain.

There can be no one Jewish way to vote, no Jewish three line whip.

Let’s relish voting, relish democracy and relish our political differences.

Labour just aren’t putting up an alternative – our MP Wes Streeting voted with the Tories to trigger Article 50 and has no interest in giving us a say in what kind of deal we get with the EU. “Since the last election, I’ve started working for an animal welfare charity and kept campaigning locally to protect school spending and for more local NHS resources, so many local residents will recognise me and the work we’ve been doing.

“It seems absurd that in this day and age anti-Semitism remains a major problem. Last year’s EU referendum seems to have emboldened a small but nasty section of society and attacks on ethnic and religious minorities have been on the increase, even in political parties – we saw Shami Chakrabarti’s ‘whitewashing’ of the Labour anti-Semitism report last year and Ken Livingstone being given a slap on the wrist for saying Hitler supported Zionism.

“There was even a Lib Dem candidate selected who had made awful remarks in the past, criticising ‘the Jews’ among other comments. We absolutely can do something about it though. I was proud when Tim Farron showed real leadership and sacked that candidate. It’s 2017 – there is just no reason to tolerate anti-Semitism.

“Faith schools absolutely can and usually do provide excellent levels of education for children but I think they should follow the independent school model. With that said, I’d absolutely support the increase and expansion of Jewish schools.”

Trustee of bomber family’s mosque wrote hate tweets The trustee of a mosque linked to the family of the Manchester suicide bomber has denied it is a breeding ground for extremism, as it was revealed that he was behind offensive tweets about Jews.

Farzi Haffar from Didsbury mosque this week sought to calm fears about radicalisation, despite having sent social media messages commenting on “the Jewish lobby” and describing Israelis as Nazis.

Haffar, who denied that concert bomber Salman Abedi had visited the mosque, did say the killer’s father, Ramadan, had used it.

“We’ve never seen him,” said Haffar, referring to the 22-year-old suicide bomber, who killed 22 people and injured more than 110 people on Monday. “His father who used to pray here is in Libya. Lots of Libyans prayed here.” Asked about extremism, Haffar added: “We have never had a concern here about radicalisation. I am part of a police advisory group. We do not want to end up with radicals and we are very careful about the imams we employ.

We have never had concerns and have been horrified since yesterday.”

However, Jewish grassroots groups were quick to point out that Haffar had previously sent a number of inflammatory tweets.

They included one reading: “The more these radical and fundamental #Jewish invaders attack #Moslem and #Christian #Arab holy areas in

Palestine, the more hate there is.”

In another message, he retweeted someone writing about “joy/applause for breaking taboo, comparing Israelis to Nazis”.

Colonel Richard Kemp, a former British Army commander, said Haffar’s tweets were “incitement to hatred”.

HOPKINS SACKED BY LBC AFTER ‘FINAL SOLUTION’ TWEET Controversial broadcaster Katie Hopkins and LBC have agreed she will leave the radio station “immediately” over remarks made in the wake of the Manchester attack. Hopkins caused outrage with a tweet that appeared to reference the term used by the Nazis for the Holocaust. The now-deleted message, made in the hours after the explosion, read: “22 dead – number rising. Schofield.

Don’t you even dare. Do not be a part of the problem. We need a final solution #Machester” (sic).

KILLER’S COUSIN POSTED SICK PRO-HITLER MESSAGE A cousin of the Manchester bomber who was arrested last week in connection with the attack that left 22 dead posted anti-Semitic messages on social media.

Abderahman Forjani, 21, was arrested on 23 May, hours after the suicide bomb attack by Salman Adedi outside the Manchester Arena at the end of a concert

by American popstar Ariana Grande. His brother, Abdalla Forjani, was also arrested.

Forjani had posted anti-Semitic messages on Facebook.

Among the posts appearing on his account, which has since been taken down, were: “If only Hitler was still alive – these Jews would be burnt in chambers.”

He also posted about his animosity toward his home town of Manchester.

It was also reported that the bomber had prayed at Didsbury mosque in south Manchester, which was attended by at least two British members of the Islamic State terror organisation who had travelled to Syria.

Some 14 people have been arrested in connection with the bomb attack.

Israeli thinking helps Manchester to heal A British charity set up by a Glaswegian rabbi and a French Jew is using psychological techniques from Israel to help those affected by the bombing.

Scottish Rabbi Dov Benyaacov-Kurtzman and Heads Up co-founder Maurice Benaim from France have both lived in Israel, and have imported a new two-stage technique in part focused on memory structure, which is now used by the Israeli army.

In Manchester this week, the duo opened a “pop-up” clinic when a city-centre landlord agreed to let them use his vacant city-centre premises, with up to 70 professionals volunteering their time.

The team received training from the technique’s Israeli developer Professor Uri Gidron on Sunday, and now work in shifts to help those affected by the suicide bombing of the Ariane Grande concert at the Manchester Arena on 22 May.

Benaim and BenyaacovKurtzman are in the process of developing a “national resilience programme,” designed for the aftermath of terrorist attacks and developed using the experience of Israelis.

“Over time they realised that the traditional approach [to counselling] based emotional support was not helpful, that it gave the victims a higher risk of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,” said Benaim. “This new Israeli method is based on cognition. When a person goes into shock, his thinking ability is not functioning – emotions are hijacking it,” he says. “The amygdala takes over the frontcortex. It’s a natural response, a defence. The idea we employ, called Cognitive Psychological First-Aid, is to reactivate the thinking part and deactivate the emotional part. This makes the person return very quickly to effective functioning.”

Janner family’s ‘relief’ as claims are dropped Lord Janner’s family has spoken of their “immense relief and intense gratitude” at the news that six claimants against his estate have dropped their civil suits alleging child sexual abuse by the late Labour peer.

But Daniel Janner, a QC like his late father; Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, the senior rabbi of Reform Judaism, and mental health campaigner Marion Janner are now seeking an urgent meeting with the chair of the national child abuse inquiry, Professor Alexis Jay, in an effort to get Lord Janner’s name removed entirely as a separate strand of the inquiry.

The unexpected news that the suits were being dropped was broken to the family last Thursday. Richard Scorer, one of the lawyers for the six claimants, said despite the decision, the cases would have been difficult to win because of the historical nature of the claims.

Instead, he said: “Our clients have now received categorical assurances from [Professor] Jay, that she will hear the allegations of abuse by the late Lord Janner as part of her wide-reaching inquiry, and that the actions of the various agencies involved will be scrutinised in detail.

“As a result, our clients will focus their efforts on working with the inquiry to discover the truth of what really happened rather than continue to fight the civil

An academics’ union has passed a motion at its annual congress distancing itself from a controversial new definition of anti-Semitism.

The University and Colleges Union (UCU), which has 110,000 members, rejected the new International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition, because it “conflates anti-Semitism with criticism of Israel”.

Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Simon Johnson said the motion was “an attempt to discredit the IHRA definition”. He added that the move was offensive, but no surprise. “UCU has a history of attempting to define

anti-Semitism on behalf of the Jewish community as opposed to consulting.”

Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush condemned the motion, calling it “retrograde and deeply disappointing”, adding: “Despite past form, it beggars belief that anyone in the UCU would want to dictate to Jews what constitutes anti-Semitic abuse against them.

“This resolution seeks to deny victims of anti-Semitic abuse the right to call it out for what it is – particularly when it is dressed up as dangerous demonisation of Israel or when Jews are harassed or intimidated because of their connections with Israel.”

Lord Janner’s family are now seeking to have his name removed from the inquiry

cases against Janner’s estate, which are at risk of being ruled out of time.”

But Rabbi Janner-Klausner said she believed the lawsuits had been dropped “because when it came to the prospect of giving evidence, they couldn’t do it”.

And she added that if it were true that [Professor] Jay had given such assurances to the clients of Mr Scorer “then she should resign, because it makes the inquiry even more of a farce, and certainly not independent”.

The dropping of the suits marks the

end of a long fight for the Janner family, who have been “in limbo” since their father’s death in December 2015.

They are now renewing calls for the community to honour their father, particularly the many organisations which he founded.

In a joint statement the siblings said: “We want to thank all those who stood by our family through this nightmare.

“The allegations against our late father were wholly unsubstantiated and an appalling injustice”.

Palmach heroes remembered with Memorial to the Missing ceremony

A new set of names was unveiled on Sunday for the first time in Britain to join those on the circular stone memorial in Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey to the men and women who went missing on active service during the Second World War. The new names are those of 23 members of the Palmach who took part in the first joint operation between the Jews of Mandate Palestine and the British forces.

Tragically, Operation Boatswain, an attempt to sabotage a Vichy-run oil refinery off the Lebanese coast, ended in disaster.

The 23 young men set out on 18 May, 1941, with British liaison officer Maj Sir Anthony Palmer of the SOE in the Ari Yam [Sea Lion] from Haifa. The boat disappeared; despite searches, neither it, its cargo of explosives nor the men on board were seen again.

In 2014, Col Nir Ereli of the IDF’s Missing in Action sector convened a meeting of the families of the 23 to tell them the files were being closed.

Ajex archivist Martin Sugarman felt it was important to have the sacrifice recorded. There was a separate memorial to Maj Palmer, but nothing for the 23 young Jews. After much research, Sugarman wrote to the Commonwealth War Graves

Commission outlining the details of the case, and sending as many back-up documents as he could showing the men had volunteered to take part in the mission to help the British and Allied forces.

The story is relatively well known in Israel, where a number of memorials exist, but there has never been a recognition of Operation Boatswain in Britain.

That changed on Sunday in a ceremony organised by the Secret World War Two Learning Network at which Israel’s UK ambassador, Mark Regev, pulled aside an Israeli flag to reveal the names of the 23 men on a memorial panel.

Regev read a letter from Benjamin Netanyahu, who wrote: “Theirs [the 23] is a story of incredible courage and dedication. Their heroism reflected the Palmach’s readiness to contribute to the Allied war effort against the Axis powers, and its enormous sacrifice during World War II.” Netanyahu commended Britain’s agreement to add the names to the Memorial to the Missing and added: “Like the other gallant soldiers whose names appear on the memorial and whose fates remain unknown, our Palmach fighters paid the highest price in our shared fight.”

Former Israeli ambassador Gershon Gan, a cousin of Amiram Shochat, one of the 23, represented the families. Given the name Amiram as a middle name in tribute to his cousin, he praised Sugarman and the War Graves Commission for “rekindling the memory of the mission”, and reminding everyone the men were “sons, husbands, fathers, cousins and boyfriends”.

Regev laid a wreath on behalf of the state of Israel and Louisa Russell laid another on behalf of the Secret World War Two Learning Network.

Rabbi (Major) Reuven Livingstone recited El Maale Rachamim and Ajex banners were lowered in memory of the 23.

The event was chaired by Paul McCue, a trustee of the Learning Network.

Sir Nicky’s kinder unveil monument in his honour Children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton from Nazi death camps have unveiled a monument in Prague’s main train station to honour their parents.

ANTI-ISRAEL AUTHOR EVENTS CANCELLED Anti-Israel author Gilad Atzmon has hit out at venues in Newcastle and Edinburgh for cancelling his book launch events at the last minute.

Israeli-born Atzmon had been due to speak about his new book Being in Time at the Cluny in Newcastle on Monday and at the Lighthouse in Edinburgh on Tuesday, when he was told the venues were cancelling.

In a statement, the owner of the Lighthouse said: “Gilad Atzmon has chosen to share a stage with Holocaust deniers and has failed to distance himself from far-right individuals and groups who have used

his own words to justify their anti-Semitism.”

The owner also noted that the event coincided with the Jewish festival of Shavuot “and as a result many Jewish individuals who might have wanted to attend to challenge would not be able to do so”.

Atzmon said the reasoning of the Edinburgh venue, which describes itself as a ‘radical bookstore,’ was “an insult to intelligence”.

PALESTINE CENTRE LOSES UN SUPPORT OVER TERROR LINK The United Nations has ended its support for a Palestinian women’s centre after a decision to name it after a terrorist, with Norway asking for its donor money back.

The rebuke follows a Palestinian Authority decision to name the new cultural centre in the West Bank after Dalal Mughrabi, who in 1978 was one of 13 Palestinians to hijack a Tel Aviv bus, killing 38 people, many of them children. She has since been praised as a “martyr”.

30,000 ATTEND TEL AVIV RALLY AGAINST SETTLEMENT POLICY Some 30,000 Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv against what organisers described as “50 years of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories”.

The rally in Rabin Square was organised by the anti-settlement group Peace Now under the banner of “Two States – One Hope”. Those taking part included left-wing Israeli parties such as the Zionist Union, as well as other left-wing groups like the New Israel Fund.

Questions over Kushner’s ‘back channel’ to Russia Donald Trump’s son-in-law and key adviser has been caught up in an escalating scandal over the US president’s links to Russia after it was alleged he set up a secret “back channel” before Trump even took office.

Jared Kushner, an Orthodox Jew whose wife Ivanka is one of Trump’s five children, is a real estate and media tycoon who was appointed senior White House adviser with a wide-ranging remit which includes the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.

Until this week, Kushner had largely escaped the focus on Trump’s links with Vladimir Putin’s Moscow regime, which has so far forced the resignation of Trump’s national security adviser and the recusal of his attorneygeneral from the FBI investigation into Russian influence.

Last week, however, the Washington Post reported that in December last year Kushner sought to set up a secret “back channel” between Trump’s team and Russia.

Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the reports were “obviously very concerning,” adding that if they were proven Kushner’s topsecret security clearance should be removed.

In a familiar refrain, Trump tweeted that it was “fake news”, but he is now under considerable pressure with investigations under way into his team’s links with Russia, which is

Lebanese movie-goers must keep wondering Lebanon’s ministry of the economy has banned the new Wonder Woman film because lead actress Gal Gadot is Israeli.

An advance premiere of the film was cancelled on Wednesday in Beirut. Posters of the movie and digital billboards had previously sprouted up around the Lebanese capital.

A protest group called the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon demonstrated against showing the film.

The group on its Facebook page praised the ministry’s

call, saying it advocated a ban because Gadot was a soldier in the Israeli army, and has

expressed support for Israel’s military policies against the Gaza Strip, run by terror group Hamas.

In a widely shared posting on her Facebook page, Gadot has praised Israel’s military during the Gaza-Israel 2014 war, sending prayers to Israeli soldiers “who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas”.

The British government has marked a significant shift in attitude by voting against a motion which it said “politicised” medical access for Palestinians. It follows a vote at the 70th World Health Assembly in Geneva last Thursday, in which the UK joined the US, Australia, Canada, Israel, Guatemala and Togo in opposing a call for improved health provisions for Palestinians. The decision marks a notable change in the UK’s voting.

Israel is to reduce the electricity supply to Gaza after officials in the Palestinian government in the West Bank said payments would be scaled back. Maj Gen Yoav Mordechai of the Israeli defence body COGAT said the move is due to “internal problems” between Gaza’s Hamas rulers and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

He did not say when electricity would be reduced or how long it would last.

Israel’s interior minister and his wife are reportedly among 16 people who were interrogated by police in a major corruption probe.

Sixteen people were taken in for questioning on Monday in the investigation into tax evasion and property crimes, police said. Aryeh Deri and his wife were questioned by the police’s high-profile crimes unit for at least 10 hours over suspected wrongdoing, Israeli media reported.

Communal concerns weigh heavy in vote One week from now, either Theresa May or Jeremy Corbyn will enter Downing Street. A great many voters, of course, have already made their minds up. After 18 months of shocking headlines about Corbyn’s past pronouncements and antiSemitism in his party, Theresa May would have to announce a ban on shechita for some Jewish voters to consider backing her rival for Number 10.

While the candidacy of community members at the forefront of fighting anti-Semitism may help avoid a dramatic erosion of support beyond the low levels of 2015, the wrath they faced from some quarters is a measure of the anger the Labour brand currently stirs up among parts of Anglo-Jewry.

British Jews, of course, will be swayed by Brexit, the cost of living and strong local candidates as well as ‘Jewish’ issues, but perhaps – more than ever – these will be uppermost in many minds.

Where questions persist over Corbyn’s position on some forms of boycotts and the Balfour Declaration whose centenary we mark this year, May has made clear it will be marked with “pride”.

She makes no mention in her column in today’s Jewish News of the Dubs Amendment, whose curtailment was widely condemned. But on tackling antiSemitism she seeks to stress clear blue water between herself and her main rival, saying her record of zero-tolerance stands in sharp contrast to his. On this, as the PM rightly points out, she has indeed been “strong and consistent”.

This will ring true with many readers. Labour’s rhetoric of zero-tolerance has too often not been matched by actions. The cases of Ken Livingstone and Oxford Union Labour Club and the speedy readmission of Jackie Walker – only for the party to suspend her again – stand out.

It’s true many of the offensive social media posts revealed over the last year were posted well before Corbyn became leader. It’s also true his clear condemnation of Nazi-Israel comparisons (a favourite of anti-Semitic elements on the left) were a step forward. Also, both main parties have adopted the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. But there’s no getting away from the fact that under his watch the party has fallen short in the way it has dealt with some cases.

There is also no getting away from a 30-year one-sided record on Israel and the Palestinians. The very thought of someone who previously introduced members of Hamas as ‘friends’ and who attended an event where a wreath was laid at the grave of Munich Olympic terrorist becoming PM, is more than enough to send a shudder through most British Jews.

With May and Tim Farron having already addressed the community directly through these pages, there is still time for Corbyn to do so for the first time.

No one is pretending he would get an easy ride but it’s precisely because of the persistent concern in Anglo-Jewry – so much so that the new JLC chair has suggested his victory would create a crisis for the community – that such direct engagement is so important.

All the more so from a leader who has shown himself ready to go head-tohead with the PM (which she sidestepped) and who, even his fiercest critics recognise, has outperformed expectations and visibly grown with confidence

Trump’s peacemaking is all unfounded optimism DAVID HOROVITZ EDITOR, TIMES OF ISRAEL

or decades, we’ve watched American administrations wrestle with the nuances of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, gradually formulating and recalibrating their positions — seeking to make progress for Israel’s sake, for the Palestinians’ sake, seeking to defang a pretext for terrorism, seeking the near-impossible deal.

And when US President Donald J. Trump came to the Middle East this week – to Riyadh, Jerusalem and Bethlehem – the Arab and Israeli leaders he met, and the pundits who watched him, subjected his every utterance to the spectacularly nuanced scrutiny they applied to all those other administrations over the years. Where is the administration headed? What to make of what he said, of what he didn’t say?

But Trump is no sophisticate where matters of Middle East political maneuvering are concerned. And neither has he

The former administration experts on our region, and the best brains the US think tanks can produce — thus far, at least, almost none of them has been drawn into the Trump administration brain trust.

For now, therefore, it’s worth internalising that where President Trump and the Middle East peace process are concerned, there is no strategy for the pundits to try to figure out. It’s not even a case of “What you see is what you get” – because there’s no telling

what we may get. It is, rather: What you see is what there is. Not carefully, warily calculated formulations, hinting at the subtle agenda beneath. But Trump front and center. Trump from the heart. Trump from the gut.

And what you see is a president who believes in his deal-making skills, and wants to think he can apply them to regional politics.

What you see is a president who is wary of Muslims, but is now, rhetorically at least, distinguishing between the religion and its adherents, on the one hand, and the political manipulation of the religion by evil people, on the other — hence his talk in Riyadh on Sunday of “Islamist extremism” and “Islamist terror.” Not Islamic extremism; not Islamic terror.

What you see is a president instinctively supportive of Israel — of a strong nation, with a glorious history, that knows how to look after itself. You saw it in his history-making “private visit” to the Israeli-liberated, holiest place for Jewish prayer – kippah on head, respectful, empathetic. It is an unsophisticated love — a birthright Israel-style love – that the Palestinians are doing their best to cloud. (After unso-

phisticated love for Israel, there often follows dismay at the realisation that not everything is quite as clear-cut as one had thought. The more you know, the more complicated it can get; the challenge for Israel and its supporters will become more acute if Trump engages more deeply, to see him maintain his Zionist sensibilities amid a complex narrative).

What you see is a presidentwell-disposed toward Jews. They’re part of his family.

In his Israel Museum speech, the last event of his whirlwind Middle East trip, he insisted, in a departure from his prepared text, that Abbas and the Palestinians are “ready to reach for peace.”

Speaking slowly, as though addressing small children, he continued, “I know you’ve heard it before. I am telling you. That’s what I do. They are ready to reach for peace.” And, he went on, still extemporising, after his meeting with “my very good friend, Benjamin, I can tell you also, that he is reaching for peace. He wants peace.”

To which one can only say two things: One: Would that it were all so simple.

Two: Nobody, but nobody, knows quite what will happen when – or if – President Trump allows himself to recognise that it is not.

n an interview last week with the Wall Street Journal, Salman Abedi’s sister, Jomana, gave a chilling explanation for why her brother massacred 22 people in the Manchester arena. Instead of thundering against this act of mass murder, she put it into a grievance based context. ‘I think he saw children – Muslim children – dying everywhere, and wanted revenge’ she said. ‘He saw the explosives America drops on children in Syria, and he wanted revenge’.

Those sentiments encapsulate the victim narrative you constantly hear from Islamists.

Terrorism is the inevitable response from Muslims anguished by the ‘crimes’ of western governments. The West is really to blame for the suffering of its own civilians because it stokes up Muslim anger by misguided interventions and warmongering. This feeds into a wider narrative of oppression and Islamophobia whereby ‘alienated’ and impression-

Of course, it is not just Islamists who offer this explanation. They have an army of fellow travellers in left-liberal circles who fall over themselves to offer up excuses for Islamist barbarity.

Islamic State, they tell us, may do unconscionable things but they are merely reacting to the wrongs they witness on a daily basis. The chief apologist is Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn, a man who has stood in friendship with terror

groups for several decades.

In a major speech last week, in which he condemned Abedi, Corbyn argued that the military approach to terror was flawed and that ‘talking to people you profoundly disagree with’ would bear more fruit. Naturally, this suggests that there are grievances to be discussed and resolved, a process which will diminish the number of attacks we face. So what are these grievances?

Fortunately, the leaders of ISIS have been very helpful in this regard. In the fifteenth edition of their glossy magazine Dabiq, they explain why they hate us so much and what we must do to make us all safer.

The most important reason they give for attacking western countries is that their populations are full of blaspheming ‘disbelievers’ who ‘reject the oneness of Allah’ and ‘indulge in all manner of devilish practices’. They go on: ‘Your disbelief is the primary reason we fight you’.

The second reason is ISIL’s hatred of democratic, liberal societies which grant ‘supreme authority’ to people’s ‘whims and desires’ via the ‘legislators’ that are voted into power.

These whims include a tolerance for ‘gay rights,’ ‘alcohol’, ‘drugs’ and ‘fornication’. Such is their visceral fear and loathing of female sexuality that their supporters called the Manchester arena a ‘shameless concert arena’.

The third reason is that western countries are full of atheists who deny ‘the existence of your Lord and creator’. The fourth reason is the West’s shameless ‘crimes against Islam’ which include mocking the prophets and vilifying the laws of the Shariah.

It is only after this litany of complaints that they fulminate against Western foreign policy though it is made clear that there will be no respite even if we change approach. ‘The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam’.

Thanks to Dabiq, we have all the proof we need that the essential driver of violent jihad is pure religious fanaticism, not revenge for western misdeeds. There’s the lesson here for Jeremy Corbyn and the army of apologists who love giving terrorists a free pass.

It’s high time to field strictlyOrthodox Jewish candidates BRIAN GORDON

’m surprised by the criticism levelled against Jeremy Newmark and Mike Katz for standing as Labour candidates in Hendon and Finchley and Golders Green. I’m not among those critics.

Within the laws of democratic procedure, everyone is entitled to stand for election where he wishes. It is quite understandable that an aspiring MP would avidly seize an opportunity for candidature wherever it arises.

The Conservative MPs who represented Hendon and Finchley and Golders Green since 2010 and are restanding – Matthew Offord and Mike Freer – are solid Israel supporters and committed advocates for the needs of our community. So it’s absurd to view the candidature of two Jewish Labour activists as an expression of no-confidence in the incumbents. It’s part of established political custom that major parties field candidates in all constituencies, regardless of the prospect of success. No doubt Newmark and Katz

consider they could do an equally good or even better job as MPs. In view of the shambolic state of the Labour Party, it’s virtually inconceivable they’ll be given a chance. But they should not be condemned for “having a go” just because they happen to be Jewish.

My criticism of them is the fact that, as active Jews, they can represent a party at all whose leadership is so hostile to Israel and so apathetic about internal anti-Semitism. Both are from Labour’s moderate wing and doubtless detest Corbyn and his obnoxious ideology.

But their effective promotion of Corbyn and his extreme left-wing cohorts as the next government is a deplorable and indefensible position.

Why, however, are they contesting unwinnable Labour seats rather than secure ones?

I suspect they had little choice. I understand that at this snap election the Labour hierarchy, like the Conservatives, exerted rigid control, over who was selected and where. The prospect of two men with a high Jewish/Zionist profile becoming Labour MPs would be anathema to the current leadership. The opportunity for ultimate success was likely manipulated against

them – hence they are where they are.

But are Jewish voters really more inclined to vote for Jewish candidates? Generally, I think not. Jewish issues certainly count. But a good non-Jewish candidate can be as acceptable as any other. The difference the Jewish identities of Newmark and Katz will make to the size of their polls is negligible.

The only situation in which a Jewish candidate can make a significant difference is if he is strictly-Orthodox in a Jewish area.

Alas, we have not seen the like at parliamentary level, simply because a strictly-Orthodox candidate has rarely been selected by a major political party, which is a great shame.

Jews in Parliament, some reaching the highest levels. But the election of an Orthodox MP is highly overdue. Especially with today’s so-called British values of community cohesion, equalities and “protected characteristics”, where practically any culture or allegiance is accepted.

This major deficiency, suggests there is still an unspoken, lingering prejudice. Maybe it’s partly the Orthodox community’s fault for not sufficiently pushing for decision-making positions within political parties.

L’chaim to Manchester – a city that’s in my blood JENNI FRAZER

M

y grandparents came to Manchester from – supposedly, but we don’t really know – Kiev and Berdichev, outposts of the Pale of Settlement in 19th century Greater Russia.

Unlike most of their contemporaries, they brought their parents with them, rather than the other way round. The young people, who married as teenagers in Manchester in 1901, were bursting to get away from the narrow confines and burgeoning pogroms of their birthplaces.

So Manchester it was. They settled down and began to have children: eight in their case, my great-aunt and her husband with an eye-watering 13 offspring.

And because it was Manchester, and that’s what you did, my grandfather opened a raincoat factory, Reindeer Raincoats, with the unforgettable marketing slogan, “Don’t forget the rain, dear!”

And he and my grandmother, who had had a rocky economic start to their marriage, prospered and flourished in the “can-do” atmosphere of the city.

By the time my mother, the youngest of the eight, came along, things were more than comfortable.

The family were founders of one of the “cathedral” shuls of north Manchester, and Grandma’s Shabbat afternoon tea had the equivalent of a three-line whip for all the numerous cousins and inevitable sons and

daughters-in-law.

It sounds fanciful now, but growing up in Glasgow, Manchester meant so much to me. One of my many aunts used to send parcels to us which were usually padded out with copies of the Manchester Guardian and the Manchester Evening News, and I remember distinctly flattening out the newspapers and reading them cover to cover, familiarising myself with the city and its landmarks even before we went to live there. (She was glamorous, this aunt, worked in the circulation department of the Evening News. Another of the aunts wrote occasional editorials for the Manchester Guardian, so perhaps newspapers are in the blood.)

Visits to Manchester, on smoky trains powered by stokers shovelling coal, were big occasions. Grandma herself would meet us at Victoria Station – just around the corner from where the Manchester Arena is now.

And when we moved from Glasgow, Manchester became my playground: from the city’s Central Library where I studied (not hard enough) for my A-levels, to the Kardomah Cafe in St Ann’s Square where it was cool to hang out with friends. The

69 Theatre Company operated in what became the Royal Exchange Theatre, a glorious hub where the Corn Exchange prices still showed as they were on the last day of trading.

As soon as I was old enough I got a holiday job in a catalogue company in one of the former Victorian warehouses in Granby Row, where last week police raided a gentrified block of flats in pursuit of the network of the Manchester Arena bomber.

Later, as a student, I worked as a lowly production assistant at BBC Manchester, once memorably escorting the great Indian film star Asha Parekh through Piccadilly Gardens to the studios, pursued by a tribe of her fans.

Paradise Row, where my grandfather’s raincoat factory once was, no longer exists, bombed to smithereens during the Second World War. But the city, with its town hall clock famously big enough to accommodate a double-decker bus, thrives and moves on.

My grandparents would say: “What Manchester does today, London does tomorrow”.

That’s what I was taught in synagogue. And in Sunday school. And again in my Zionist youth movement. On my gap year on kibbutz.

Last Saturday night, the IDF turned up at Sumud Freedom Camp in the South Hebron Hills, where an historic coalition of Palestinian, Israeli and Diaspora Jewish activists re-established the Palestinian village of Sarura.

130 Jewish activists were there as part of a delegation with the Centre for Jewish NonViolence, who takes Diaspora Jews to the West Bank to undertake solidarity work with Palestinian communities.

The people of Sarura were displaced in 1997 due to settler violence. ‘Sumud’ is the Arabic word for ‘steadfastness.’

Our participation in this action was an act of solidarity with the coalition, to leverage the Jewish privilege we hold in Israel/Palestine to try and prevent further displacement and violence being targeted at the villagers who had

But the experiences of aggression Jewish activists felt that night is just one example of the kinds of intimidation that Palestinian communities face on a daily basis in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

I’m certain that the only reason the situation did not escalate to arrest is due to the presence of Jewish bodies.

Last Wednesday, in the haven of the Jewish people, a peaceful demonstration at Damascus Gate was ripped apart by Israeli police. Israeli and Diaspora Jews formed a blockade in the path of the March of the Flags for Jerusalem Day. In the haven for the Jewish people, the Muslim quarter in the old city is ‘sterilised’ .

Palestinian residents are forced to leave the area, while thousands of ultra-nationalists march through the old city chantng ‘death to Arabs’ and ‘Mohammed is dead.’ Protesters were strangled and shoved; one person even had her arm broken by Israeli police.

What other conclusions can we draw from this experience other than this supposedly inalienable right to a Jewish haven is actually conditional? Conditional to tacitly or explicitly supporting the occupation and the violence

that accompanies it.

In the US, the rise of organisations like If Not Now show a chasm between tacit support for the Israeli government and Occupation among communal leadership and the attitudes of young people.

As we mark the anniversary of the Six Day War, the British Jewish community needs brave leadership. From our youth movements to our synagogues, to our governing institutions, we need a willingness to declare that occupation is not our Judaism and that our self-determination is not contingent on the continuous control and oppression of another people.

We must build a Jewish movement against the occupation that centres itself on values of shared humanity. Sumud Freedom Camp is still standing. There will be a continuous presence as the rebuild continues.

I participated in the Sarura action because I learnt my values and lessons of social justice from my Judaism and ending the occupation is a Jewish social justice issue.

Fifty years of occupation is 50 years too many. Ilana Sumka, director of the Centre for Jewish Non-Violence often says that there is no ‘it’s complicated’ with occupation: you’re either for it, or against it. Which side are you on?

The dangerous drivel poisoning UK Muslims MAAJID NAWAZ

e were warned, we knew it was coming, but we were not prepared. Manchester responded with resilience and heart – this is undeniable. Salman Abedi had been reported multiple times to the police by members of the Muslim community, and even by his own family who warned British authorities that he was dangerous. Why then was he not in, as Theresa May put it, our current “intelligence picture”? Surely Abedi was a walking red flag?

But our security forces are at maximum capacity, actively monitoring 3,000 suspected British terrorists from a pool of 23,000 extremists. They simply cannot keep up. The problem of identifying and eradicating extremists requires a deeper solution. Though reporting suspicious behaviour is important and must continue, the Muslim community must do more to challenge the kind of normalised everyday extremism that provides an optimal breeding ground for more vicious ideology to foster and develop.

The Manchester Islamic Centre is a case in point. Also known as Didsbury mosque, this is a place that Abedi frequented. The Centre has announced that the attack “has no place in Islam or any religion” and that they serve people from “all background and faiths, from our food and clothes banks, to all our interfaith dialogues.”

While these sentiments are hard to fault, a closer look at the mosque’s past preaching reveals a different picture.

Trustee of Didsbury mosque Farzi Haffar has previously sent a number of inflammatory anti-Semitic tweets, including one that states: “The more these radical and fundamental #Jewish invaders attack #Moslem and #Christian #Arab holy areas in Palestine, the more hate there is.”

In another, he retweeted someone writing about “joy/applause for breaking taboo, comparing Israelis to Nazis”.

Didsbury mosque has also hosted speakers with anti-Semitic, homophobic, and other worrying views. Among them have been Abdullah Hakim Quick, Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari, and Abu Eesa Niamatullah.

The following provides only a slight glimpse into the dangerous drivel being preached on British soil by such speakers: Hardline preacher Abu Eesa Niamtullah has said, “Is it halal to love one’s nation? hat do you get when you pair an Israeli barn owl with a Palestinian barn owl? Middle East peace and an argument over whether the chick is Jewish or Muslim.

It sounds like a joke, but it is in fact the unlikely reality of an Israeli-PalestinianJordanian barn owl breeding programme in the Jordan Valley, now in full flight, whose project leaders this month published a paper on how nature conservation helps in peace-building.

The project traces its path to 1983, when an Israeli farmer in Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu realised he was using too much pesticide to kill rodents. He knew the strong chemicals were bad for the environment, especially in such a biologically diverse area (a key bottleneck for migratory birds), so he sought a natural solution – and came up with feathers.

Together with kestrels, barn owls are good hunters (or “biological pest management agents”) and native. The farmer knew they nested in cavities, so he built 14 nesting boxes.

At first his owls died, mostly poisoned by the pesticides of others, so he set about persuading neighbours in Beit She’an to sign up. Slowly, they did. With each barn owl pair producing 11 chicks on average, and with each barn owl killing up to 6,000 rodents a year, the project soon took off, letting farmers cut their pesticide use while still maintaining crop yield.

In the 1990s, news twitched the ear of Professor Yossi Leshem, a senior zoologist at Tel Aviv University, who first saw the potential to expand the scheme, given Palestinian and Jordanian farmers all share the Jordan Valley, and birds don’t need visas. He set off in search of partners – no mean feat, since many Arab communities still consider owls a bad omen, but soon there were 220 nest boxes in Jordanian and Palestinian Authority territory.

“Because barn owls know no boundaries, owls breeding in Israel hunt rodents in Jordan and the Palestinian territories , and vice versa,” said Leshem, in a paper in Cell

Press. “It’s another symbol of interconnectivity.”

The scheme became an official transnational project in 2002, when the farmers began ringing and tracking the birds to see where they went. Ever since, Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian farmers have met regularly to exchange experiences and information in joint seminars. This has continued even during times of conflict and the farmers now produce educational documents in Hebrew and Arabic for schoolchildren from all over the region visiting the nesting sites.

Professor Alexandre Roulin, a Swiss owl expert brought in to advise, said another example of interconnectivity was when the teams found “mixed” couples breeding; the first pair four years ago, a second pair last year.

There was even a “unique case” of two female barn owls laying eggs and incubating together in a single nest cup in a “communal nest” (a trio of two females and one male bred in an abandoned Israeli water tower in 2013, with all three owls bringing food to the communal family, which delivered 20 eggs, of which 19 hatched and 16 fledged).

Cooperation projects that benefit each country can help “build confidence between communities in conflict,” says Roulin. “By working together on a common, politically neutral goal, actors can change their vision of the neighbouring cross-border community and strengthen common regional identities.”

It is not the first time nature has cut through politics here. Israeli general Baruch Spiegel and Jordanian general Mansour Abu Rashid , both project supporters, recall an anecdote from 1993, when they were negotiating the Israel-Jordan peace treaty. Israeli researchers had been tracking wolves with radio collars, when one strayed over the border. Bedouins killed the wolf and gave the collar to Jordanian soldiers.

Spiegel asked for its return. Mansour ran into internal resistance but Spiegel finally got it back, with another collar lost years earlier.

News was relayed to prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was so encouraged by the trust it showed he told Spiegel to go all-out for a deal.

Owls, bats and wolves are not alone in helping to broker relations. In the Hua Valley every year, farmers feed 35,000 wintering cranes seven tons of corn a day to stop them damaging crops and to promote ecotourism on both sides of the border.

But third parties, perhaps from neutral countries or non-governmental organisations, can help, they say, as can support of respected national leaders like Shimon Peres shortly before he died.

“By promoting dialogue between communities,” they say, “ecosystems shared by multiple countries can be reconnected, favouring both nature conservation and peace-building.

Cous cous and olive salad with halloumi cheese This is a colourful combination of salad ingredients, which is served with hot cous cous and great for a light lunch or healthy supper any time of the year. Halloumi cheese is traditionally from Cyprus and made from sheep milk, flavoured with shreds of mint. It has a milky, slightly salty taste and a rubbery texture.

It comes into its own when cooked. Slices of halloumi cheese are delicious char-grilled or fried and eaten with salads. Mozzarella is a good alternative although its texture is quite different.

SERVES 4

COOKING TIME 15 MINS

250g cous cous 2 tablespoons vegetable stock powder 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 red onions – peeled and finely sliced 250g packet Halloumi cheese – drained and thinly sliced 300g baby plum or cherry tomatoes – cut in half 3 cloves garlic – finely chopped 85g black and green olives – pitted 15g each fresh parsley and basil 2 tablespoons capers Salt and freshly ground black pepper

cover with cling film and leave to stand for 5 minutes.

2 Heat a tablespoon of the oil in a shallow pan. Sauté the red onions for 2 to 3 minutes or until softened. Remove and using the same pan, fry the halloumi cheese slices for 3 minutes. Set aside.

3 Add the chopped garlic, tomatoes and olives and sauté for a further 2 minutes.

4 Finely chop the herbs and stir into the cous cous. Add the capers and tomato mixture.

5 Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

What does the Torah say about… the Manchester attack?

BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS This week’s Torah portion, right before the election, is apt because it is strong on themes of leadership and humility.

The parsha itself deals mainly with the Sotah (the suspected woman), the Nazir (who abstained from wine and grape products), the Priestly Blessing and the offerings of the tribal princes at the dedication of the Tabernacle in the Desert. The Haftorah deals with Samson, whose Nazirite oath was the source of his strength and his undoing.

Leadership is a two-edged sword. Those who actively pursue it are often ill-suited. The most surprising individuals often end up the best leaders. The Torah notably does not suggest hereditary temporal leadership, and our parsha starts with the Gershomites, descendants of Moses, who did not succeed him to power although their father held the highest office possible.

The only sour note here is perhaps the Nazir. When the Cohanim were designated hereditary priests, it might be said they supplanted the firstborn. The Nazir is a way of offering everyone a chance of holiness. Yet this is a form of arrogance.

What makes a person take on such unnecessary and onerous restrictions? The offering associated with the conclusion of the Nazir oath hints at the element of self-centredness that the Nazirite expresses. No wonder Samson ended up so badly. His parents unwittingly condemned him to his pride and his fall, by binding him to the one oath that has the potential to damage a person by giving a false sense of importance.

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL The tragedy in the Manchester Arena has concentrated minds on the sanctity of life. What does the Torah say about the taking of such young and innocent lives?

One of the most difficult passages for the modern reader of Torah is the policy to kill men, women and children in the conquest of Canaan.

Even in a time of war, it is difficult to conceive why children should be put to the sword. They are innocent, and should be protected from adult strife.

The commentators agonise over this and resort to stating that a Divine command regarding the slaughter of

the Canaanites was a one-off in history. Furthermore, it applied only once the options offered for a peaceful co-existence were rejected, implying that the locals would fight tooth and nail to attack any Israelite. Thus, an enemy Canaanite of any age was a potential mortal danger to Israelite of any age.

The Midianites, to whom Moses was related by marriage, were also condemned to annihilation in war. The Amalekites similarly pledged themselves to Israel’s defeat and so God declared war on Amalek for all time. At first, this may look horrific. However, the Torah never permitted taking of life before first suing an enemy for peace.

Salman Abedi neither gave warning nor offered an option to death, blowing

up himself and those around him. Such an act is in any case not mandated by any authority, Divine or other.

There is no religious merit in his actions, by the standards of any Abrahamic faith. His name will be bound up in the path of infamy.

Every 50 years, equality is restored.

Britain has some of the lowest social mobility in the developed world – OECD figures show our earnings in the UK are more likely to reflect our fathers’ than any other country (even if you haven’t followed in his footsteps into the rabbinate).

In the Guardian, Simon Rogers states “24 percent of vice-chancellors, 32 percent of MPs, 51 percent of top medics, 54 percent of FTSE-100 chief execs, 54 percent of top journalists, 70 percent of High Court judges … went to private school, though only 7 percent of the population do”.

The jubilee year attempts to combat social immobility. If every 50 years everyone in essence became equal again, nothing relies on the privileges of birth. Everyone races from the same start to try to succeed, but presumably with diminished motivation.

In jubilee years, even the most primitive economy would stall. You

wouldn’t buy new slaves, redeem them at a cost or buy new land. It isn’t surprising this system was probably never implemented.

However, perhaps it should challenge us to look at the impact on global wealth that the ownership of natural resources such as oil, precious metals and water has on society, and that’s before we consider the cost of kosher meat.

The concept of the jubilee year came at a time when it was impossible to conceive of a society without slavery. With social mobility stagnant, do we maintain a suppressed lower class work force?

At least in biblical times they knew the cost and timescale of redemption from their poverty. The Torah tells us to give everyone a chance to flourish from an equal footing.

How do we achieve it without repressing free market economics?

While I have lived in Jerusalem and love to visit, I’m not sure previously I could have agreed – the news about Progressive/Reform Judaism from Israel is not always positive.

While one-in-six Israelis will choose to marry outside Israel this

year to avoid the Orthodox Rabbinate’s closed control on marriage, Progressive weddings are still not legally recognised. Our communities receive little or no state funding and we cannot bury our own dead.

A request for a prayer space at the Kotel has turned into a fight making headlines around the world.

And yet, after last week, I find myself agreeing with Rabbi Freed-

lander, not only as a Jew but a Liberal one. The Progressive community in Israel is growing in number and influence, shifting the paradigm of Israel and diaspora relations, recognising we can learn from each other.

The Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem is ordaining more students, mostly under the leadership of Rabbi Ofek Meir. Communities are growing and are no longer associated simply with the expat community.

At the WUPJ conference, we made history with a Bnot Mitzvah service for women from South America at a section of the Western Wall.

Lions celebrate football festival Football teams from across the community and further afield were at Rowley Lane last weekend as Maccabi London Lions held a junior “Festival of Football”.

The morning featured three age groups – U9, U11 and U17 – as teams from host club Maccabi London Lions were joined by Brady Maccabi, HMH, Hendon United SC, Alyth, an U15 team from JCoSS and Maccabi Nice from France.

The three competitions were played in a round-robin contest, with Maccabi London Lions A winning the U9 event, HMH the U11 and Maccabi London Lions Under 15 White – the U17 tournament.

Nigel Burns, Director of Youth Football at Maccabi London Lions, who helped set up the tournament with James Benedick and Richard Freed, said: “I was delighted with the event everyone had a great time, the weather was amazing, and it was just wonderful to see so many boys enjoying themselves; it’s what youth football should all be about.

“The positive feedback we have received has been incredible and we’re now looking at staging a yearly summer tournament from 2018.”

MILCH ‘DIGS DEEP’ FOR 13TH WIN

Tony Milch maintained his unbeaten record as he claimed his 13th professional victory on Saturday night, though admitted to being ‘disappointed’ with his overall performance.

Beating Lithuanian Arvydas Tryzno on points, he said: “I was a little bit disappointed with my performance, I felt very flat out there, and not as sharp as usual.”

Describing the six rounds as a ‘learning experience’, he added: “I had to dig deep, it was a tough night, but also a great learning curve.”

UNDERDOGS WIN ISRAELI CUP

Bnei Yehuda upset Maccabi Tel Aviv as they won the Israeli State Cup in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Maccabi were looking to claim a second win in three years, however, after a goalless 120 minutes, the underdogs won the shootout 4-3, to claim the trophy for the third time and their first title since 1990.

A Norwood glove story Norwood’s Annual Charity Boxing Dinner saw more than £125,000 raised for two charities. Norwood and the Paskin Children’s Trust were the beneficiaries of the event, which was a mixture of live entertainment and action in the ring. Robert Waterman, co-chair of the Boxing Committee, alongside Lee Koffman, said: “It’s amazing to bring such a cross-section of people together to a charity boxing dinner for Norwood, where money can be raised for the good of the community.”

Having helped the Seagulls earn promotion last season, the Israeli midfielder (pictured) told the club’s website: “Every game is going to be something special for everyone in the team, but we’re not going to be a side that everyone beats and takes all the points from. We’re ready to be a solid, strong team and be competitive. We know what we have to do for ourselves and for the club to stay in this division.”

Finishing as runners-up to Newcastle in the Championship, he says the target in their first season is to consolidate their place. ‘We’re waiting for the fixtures to come out, but when you see Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea there, you realise that you’re in a big league playing against some of the biggest clubs in the world”, he said. “I said before that everything we achieved as players this season is the biggest thing that the club has ever done.

We need to reach our target, which is to stay in the Premier League for many years.”

Admitting how playing in English football’s top flight is “like a dream” for him, he added: “It’s been an ambition of mine since I left Israel to go and play in the Premier League. When you achieve something that you’ve always wanted to do since you were a child, it`s a massive thing for you and your family.”

More than 60 pooches and their owners enjoyed some fun in the sun at the weekend when they took part in a community dog walk.

Owners brought their furry, fourlegged friends to Sunny Hill Park for the 8th staging of the event, where an afternoon full of activities included competitions, pet grooming and the chance for dog and owner to get some exercise together by embarking on a designated walking route. There were also vets, dog trainers, walkers and the Kennel Club, all on hand to offer advice at the MAccabi GB event, A host of competitions saw a variety of awards up for grabs – including: The Dog with the Waggiest Tail, Best Dog & Owner Look-alike, Quickest to Sit, Prettiest Female Dog, Most Handsome Male Dog and Best in Show.

Organiser Valerie Parnes said: “The Maccabi GB Community Dog Walk bring Jewish dogs and humans together in one place for a social and active day.

“It’s great to see some owners take that extra effort in grooming their pooches for the competitions!

We aim to put on events for an active Jewish community, including those with four legs, and the Maccabi GB Community Dog Walk shows just that.”
