The heart of Britain’s democracy was transformed into a scene of bloodshed in a few horrific moments yesterday.

Gunshots rang out within yards of the House of Commons after a knifeman burst in and confronted officers posted at the front gates.

As MPs and workers were held in lock-

down within the Palace of Westminster, medics struggled for up to half an hour to assist a police officer and the apparent assailant sprawled on the cobbled carriageway outside.

One of the first on the scene was Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood – a former army officer whose own brother

died in the Bali terrorist bombing in 2002 – who attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation of an injured police officer.

The politician, who has responsibility for Israel and the Palestinian Territories, was photographed administering aid to the stricken policeman in the immediate aftermath of the afternoon.

He was later seen with blood on his hands and face.

His party colleague Alistair Burt said: “Tobias Ellwood is the very best of us. To rush towards trouble is the action of a brave man. My admiration knows no bounds.”

Board of Deputies president advises Jewish students: ‘Don’t study at LSE’ The president of the Board of Deputies has told Jewish students not to study at the London School of Economics because the prestigious university hosted an American professor who has criticised Israel.

In an unusual move, Jonathan Arkush “strongly advised” Jewish students where not to study, after LSE chiefs stood by their decision to invite Professor Richard Falk, former United Nations Special Rapporteur to Palestine.

Falk’s recent co-authored report for a UN commission accuses Israel of “apartheid,” and in his former UN role he accused the state of “war crimes”. He was speaking in London on Monday at the launch of his book Palestine’s Horizon: Towards a Just Peace, in which he says Jerusalem has been “ethnically cleansed”.

The LSE’s Jewish Society said it was “completely unacceptable that Jewish students were subjected to the comments made during the talk”, and called for the university to

take “strong action” after the event turned ugly.

Gilad Atzmon, one of Falk’s supporters in the audience, told students to read the works of notorious Holocaust denier David Irving.

In 2012, the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office condemned Falk for providing the cover endorsement for Atzmon’s book The Wandering Who, which accuses “the Jews” of being “the only people who managed to maintain and sustain a racially-orientated, expansionist and genocidal national identity that is not at all different from Nazi ethnic ideology”.

Falk’s address was interrupted as the event descended into chaos, with pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian activists shouting accusations. Two pro-Israel activists – Jonathan Hoffman and Sharon Klaff – were removed for disruption.

At the back of the room, security guards waded into a fracas, with postgraduate

Sapan Maini-Thompson later saying Atzmon audibly claimed Jews were being removed for misbehaviour, as in Germany.

He told Jewish News: “He said to those around him ‘the Jews were expelled from Germany for misbehaving’ – which he repeated when challenged.

“He was recommending to those around him to read the works of David Irving and said Israel’s actions in the occupied territories are Hitlerian. After the event, I went up to the man and aggressively called him a Nazi. I’m not hiding that.”

While stressing he was not accusing anyone on the panel of anti-Semitism, he said of those in the audience who had made the remarks: “LSE should be far stricter on vetting procedures for those coming on to campus.

Known fascists shouldn’t be allowed on campus.”

Atzmon later confirmed to Jewish News he “indeed” recommended Irving’s work “to anyone who is interested in history rather than the

Holocaust religion”. He added that Jews have been expelled from many countries, saying: “Jews are always expelled for a reason. This isn’t to say I support expulsion or any measure against Jews or anyone else.”

During the launch – organised by the Civil Society and Human Security Unit within LSE’s Department of International Relations and also promoted by the Council for Arab-British Understanding –Hoffman repeatedly shouted at Falk, calling him an “antiSemite”. He unfurled an Israeli flag as he was led out.

In a statement, the LSE’s Jewish Society said it was “appalled by the treatment of Jewish students”, adding: “Prior to the event, we raised concerns through official channels. No substantial response was received. During the event, physical threats were also made to Jewish students by another attendee who was not removed from the event by security.”

Attention had initially focused on a report Falk recently co-authored on behalf of the UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which concluded that Israel was imposing an “apartheid regime” on the Palestinians. After protests from the US, it was withdrawn from the ESCWA website.

Falk, who is professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University, said the “firestorm” the study provoked meant it gained “ten times more attention than it otherwise would have,” after Israel’s Foreign Ministry likened it to Der Sturmer, Sturmer an anti-Semitic Nazi propaganda

publication.

“US Ambassador Nicki Haley attacked the report by attacking me,” said Falk. “It’s illustrative of a problematic situation, which has arisen over the last five or six years, that Israel and its strongest supporters no longer want to argue on the substance of the issues relating to their administration of the Palestinian people. They attack the messenger.”

During the event, Falk referred to the “changing dynamics of Zionist ambition”.

UN Watch had earlier called for him to be expelled from the UK because of his past remarks, but the LSE defended hosting him. It said: “We are committed to encouraging the free exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of respect, even on issues over which views differ sharply, such as the Middle East.”

Before the end of the event, chair Prof May Kaldor said to loud applause: “I am deeply ashamed on behalf of the LSE that there should be people who come to a meeting of this kind and behave in this way. It illustrates to me how unacceptable the way free speech is being closed down in this country.”

Speaker quits Cork talk over Falk A leading academic has pulled out of a conference in Ireland after it became apparent it would also feature Richard Falk.

Professor Alan Johnson (pic( tured) from UKIsrael think tank BICOM said Falk’s invitation to the event in Cork meant the event was

now “an attempt to normalise anti-Semitism” and withdrew his attendance.

“I have informed the organisers that I will no longer be participating,” he said.

“I had agreed to participate in an academic conference to present a paper in defence of Israel’s right to exist. But by inviting a speaker who espouses anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, the conference is now objectively an attempt to normalise antiSemitism. I cannot attend such an event.”

This comes after the University of East London (UEL) and Middlesex University cancelled events with Falk, the Emeritus Professor of Princeton University, who

accused Israel of war crimes in his role as UN Special Rapporteur to Palestine from 2008-14. He was also due to speak at UEL on Tuesday night, before the event was pulled at the last minute.

The university cancelled the event, saying it took “the difficult decision” because “it became clear, the day before the event, that the university’s external speakers policy had not been adequately followed”. The event, which had been advertised on the university’s events page, had been due to launch Falk’s new book, Palestine’s Horizons: Towards a Just Peace.

Sir Mick steps down as JLC chair

The long-term chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council has passionately defended the organisation’s contribution and expressed regret “closer organisational alignment” with the Board of Deputies was not achieved, as he announced he will not seek re-election.

Sir Mick Davis has served in the role for eight years, during which the number of member organisations has doubled and major strategic changes were introduced in areas such as schools and leadership – prompting plaudits yesterday from across the community.

In a letter to the JLC’s Council of Membership, the former chief executive of Xstarta – who also chaired David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission – said: “The time is right to allow others with equal passion to take the community forward with a fresh vision. The work of the JLC is vital in nurturing a vibrant, forward-thinking and outward-facing Jewish community of Great Britain. It has been inspiring work to lead.”

Former Board of Deputies president and JLC chair, Henry Grunwald, said he was in no doubt Sir Mick “leaves the community in a stronger position”, while recognising there were “few people whose reputation polarises our community like he does”.

as “unrepresentative and undemocratic” including very publicly by current Board president Jonathan Arkush.

Despite being a prominent supporter of Jewish and Israel causes, Sir Mick also faced criticism over his repeated criticism of Israel’s leadership in regard to the peace process and warning of the consequences of not achieving a two-state solution. As he told JLC members he was “proud the community stands unapologetically with Israel” ahead of the Balfour centenary, the country’s Ambassador Mark Regev described him as “one of the pillars of British Jewry and I thank him for his friendship and support”.

Grunwald, writing in today’s Jewish News, said: “His vision and strategic thought led the JLC to institute commissions on Jewish schools, from which emerged Partnerships for Jewish Schools, on Women in Jewish Leadership, from which came the Women in Jewish leadership programmes; on Informal Provision for Young People, from which came Reshet and on synagogue vitality. He strengthened the JLC’s political engagement and its structures to counter BDS, raised the funds to counter delegitimisation of Israel and spoke strongly in support of leadership development, and Jewish and Israel education.”

He added: “He has the courage to speak his mind, even when others disagree, the determination to defend his principles even when it comes at a cost, and the drive to translate vision into action.”

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said Sir Mick “has relentlessly and generously committed himself to the betterment of Jewish life in the UK, in Israel and beyond”, while Reform Judaism’s Senior Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner said: “He brings courage, warmth and endless generosity of heart as well as philanthropic generosity.”

Sir Mick said in his letter to council members that “our communal architecture is not fit for purpose” with too many charities competing for the “same space and resource”. He added: “I must note my regret that the Board of Deputies and JLC could not achieve closer organisational alignment during my tenure... I am, however pleased that a positive working relationship exists between the two executive teams – when that prevails the community prospers.”

Answering questions over how representative his organisation is, he said: “Our membership now comprises most synagogue bodies, almost all the welfare organisations, almost all the Israel and Zionist organisations and those that secure and educate our community. Far from being unrepresentative, the JLC has provided real representation for the 21st century.”

Six Day victory was ‘watershed’

Israeli soldiers during the Six Day War

International experts have said the Six Day War between Arab states and Israel was a “watershed” moment in the Middle East, as it marked the day the Palestinians knew they had to “fend for themselves”.

Professor Asher Susser of Tel Aviv University told a conference in London that Israel’s rapid defeat of Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian armies “ended Arab dreams of their place in the sun”.

The 50-year anniversary conference, organised by UK-Israel think tank BICOM and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), heard

Susser say the victory exposed pan-Arabism as “an empty vessel”, leading Arab states to pursue their own interests.

“No one in the Middle East more than the Palestinians believed that [Egyptian leader] Col Abdel Nasser’s formula – Arab unity, Arab socialism, and an alliance with the Soviet Union – would deliver Palestine. In six days, shockingly, humiliatingly, unbelievably, it all came to nothing,” he said, but the void left by pan-Arabism’s defeat led to two contradictory trends in the Middle East that are still seen today.

On the one hand, Susser said,

Siege image ‘no longer recognised’ The image of Israel being “under siege” was one few now recognised, the Six Day War conference was told.

Prof David Newman, formerly of Ben-Gurion University, said 70 percent of Israelis alive today were not alive in 1967, when Israel dramatically won the brief conflict.

Newman said many Israelis

today did not know the image of a “besieged Israel”, an idea still mistakenly pushed by many Israelis and supporters of the country.

“We do ourselves an injustice when we show ourselves in this way,” he said. “We are a strong state militarily. We need to think differently about where we are.”

Israel should now think “outside the territorial box” because of settlement expansion in recent years, because “settlements have made it almost impossible to draw borders”.

On the implications for a twostate solution, Newman said “we’ve missed the opportunity”, adding that solutions such as power-

UK university chiefs will visit Israel to grow academic links Plans have been unveiled for university vice-chancellors from across the country to join a landmark delegation to Israel, writes Alex Davis.

Universities Minister Jo Johnson will head the trip, which will take place under the auspices of Universities UK. Sir Steve Smith, the vice chancellor of Exeter, spoke of the first of its kind delegation during a meeting of the Board of Deputies on Sunday. He said he would take part in the initiative as a “show of support for academic links with Israel”.

It comes amid concerns over the nature of discourse about Israel on some university campuses, with several high-profile attempts by anti-Israeli protestors to shut down talks by speakers from the country. There have also been recent cases of Holocaust denial leaflets being distributed on campus.

The general secretary of the UNITE union, Len McCluskey, has vowed to discipline any members found to have sent anti-Semitic messages, after his backers subjected the man challenging him for the top job to online abuse.

Gerard Coyne, who condemned the “singling out” of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict under McCluskey, is said to be considering calling police after being sent Twitter messages invoking age-old tropes.

One tweet from @1UnionBloke – who has made clear his support for McCluskey

– carried an image referring to “Jewish mafia” with the words: “Be warned @ gerard_coyne has backing now!!”

A spokesperson for McCluskey said: “Unite has made it clear any member who has made anti-Semitic comments is in breach of the union’s rules and will face disciplinary action.”

Livingstone expecting to lose ‘Hitler’ hearing Ken Livingstone has said he will demand a judicial review if – as expected – he is punished by the Labour Party for saying Adolf Hitler was a Zionist.

In a radio interview yesterday, the suspended former London mayor (pictured) also called for Labour to oust a number of its MPs for “consciously undermining” leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 presenter Emma Barnett, he referred again to his comments about Hitler, and said he would ask the courts to decide whether he was historically accurate if he is expelled.

“I’m afraid we’ll have to be off to a judicial review in the courts,” said Livingstone, who has maintained he spoke correctly last year when he said Hitler was a Zionist “before he went mad and killed six million Jews”.

“The issue will be: what was actually said, and what is the truth.

The Labour Party has got no chance

of winning a judicial review.”

Accepting that his political career was now over and that he was “retired,” he added: “I’m not having my political career defined at the end that I’m anti-Semitic.”

Livingstone said some of Labour’s antiCorbyn MPs had jumped on his comments about Hitler to accuse him of anti-Semitism and should be kicked out for their criticisms of the party leader.

“Those that have been most over the top I think should be suspended,” he said. “Jeremy should reintroduce automatic re-selection. It’s really ridiculous that MPs in safe seats have a job for life ... I’m particularly talking about Chuka Umunna [and] Wes Streeting. Basically it’s the same group of MPs who were screaming that I’d said Hitler was a Zionist and I was anti-Semitic.”

Streeting hit back on Twitter, saying: “I won’t be taking any lectures in loyalty from Ken Livingstone. I’m not sure why he hasn’t yet been expelled from Labour.”

Board of Deputies’ president Jonathan Arkush said: “Ken Livingstone is an embarrassment to the party and should be expelled immediately.”

Livingstone’s interview has highlighted bitter divisions in the party between the traditional left-wing pro-Corbyn faction and centrists, some of whom have left the party.

Corbyn: ‘I’ve stood with you’ Jeremy Corbyn insists he’s stood “side-byside” with the Jewish community to fight anti-Semitism.

Speaking at the Runneymede Trust ahead of the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Corbyn (pictured) stressed Labour could be proud of its contribution to the struggle for justice and human rights.

“Theresa May will tell you she wants a society that works for everyone,” he said. “But friends, I and many others in the Labour Party haven’t just talked the talk, we have walked the walk. I have stood side by side with your communities: to campaign against apart-

heid South Africa, against increasing Islamophobia in this country, against racism and against anti-Semitism.”

He stressed his party was “implacably opposed” to anti-Semitism and was taking forward the recommendations of the Chakrabarti report.

He also accused the government of allowing the demonisation of migrants who keep the NHS going, adding that it was not refugees from Syria who crashed the economy and said that black people with degrees earn less than their white peers and that women of Bangladeshi or Pakistani origin are less than half as likely to be employed as women from other groups.

Tonge was ‘not at fault’ on meeting

A Labour council candidate in Birmingham has been deselected after she shared a social media post headlined ‘Israel key link in exporting ISIS oil’.

Alison Gove-Humphries, a Jeremy Corbyn supporter standing for election in Hall Green, also shared posts suggesting Israel was behind last year’s media storm focusing on anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

The posts were published on political blog Guido Fawkes four days after her selection to fight the Hall Green by-election.

She was removed from a list of approved candidates by the Birmingham Board of the Labour Party on Friday, the Birmingham Post reported.

A House of Lords committee has found that Baroness Tonge was not at fault for chairing a meeting last year that called for the UK Government to apologise for issuing the Balfour Declaration, but which was later described as “anti-Semitic”.

Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev alleged content at the event – organised by the Palestinian Return Centre last October – involved “disseminating anti-Semitism, promoting Holocaust revisionism and encouraging support for Hamas”.

But the Sub-Committee on Lords’ Standards found Tonge did not breach the code as she did not knowingly host an anti-Semitic event, nor failed to take steps to stop it from becoming so.

Charedi charter flight in Labour dismisses emergency landing drama Ryan complaint Jewish pilgrims have described their shock after a charter flight from London was forced into an emergency landing on Sunday.

One passenger said how she felt the “fragility of human life” as the pilot announced an emergency descent during the flight from London Stansted to the Polish city of Rzeszow.

She was one of 262 passengers and 10 crew members who were left shaken but unhurt after the cabin suddenly depressurised without warning.

The incident caused the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Shocked passengers were forced to pull on oxygen masks to help them to breathe when the warning sirens sounded.

The female passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her fear but said: “I thank God and the pilot

The airline said all passengers were able to be returned safely to London after the incident.

The Labour Party has rejected a complaint against its MP Joan Ryan after she was secretly filmed by Al Jazeera, Jewish News has learned.

The party’s compliance unit this week said the Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) chair was not in breach of party rules over a complaint related to footage from the Labour Party conference while she was at the LFI stand.

Britney set to play in Israel Pop star Britney Spears will perform in Tel Aviv in July, Israeli media is reporting.

The show by the 35-yearold American pop singer will reportedly take place at Yarkon Park and be part of her upcoming Asian tour.

Google tackles hate videos Google has apologised and promised to overhaul its YouTube policies after companies and government departments pulled advertising in protest at the hosting of anti-Semitic and homophobic videos.

The internet giant said it would hire extra staff to police content after major brands and agencies hit Google where it hurts in response to “vile” anti-Semitic videos that were found to be making money for those behind them.

It follows revelations in The Times that government departments and big highstreet brands were essentially funding racist videos through their adverts, with more than 200 anti-Semitic videos thought to be hosted on YouTube.

Google will ‘overhaul’ YouTube’s policies

On Tuesday, Google’s UK chief Philipp Schindler said: “We’ll be hiring significant numbers of people and developing new tools powered by our latest advancements in artificial intelligence and machine-learning to increase our capacity to review questionable content for advertising.”

FN HEAD QUESTIONS HOLOCAUST DEATHS The head of Marine Le Pen’s Front National party in the French city of Nice has said there was no mass killing during the Holocaust.

Benoît Loeuillet was filmed secretly by a documentary crew saying: “I don’t think there were that many deaths ... during the Shoah.”

Asked about Holocaust deniers, he said: “I don’t really know what to think. It’s complicated ... there weren’t six million [deaths]. There weren’t mass deaths as we’ve been told.”

Safe dating scheme offered to students Jewish Women’s Aid launched its Safer Dating programme on Monday with an evening of bowling, karaoke and cocktails, writes Noa Lessoff Gendler.

Safer Dating, which aims to help 16 to 25-year-olds identify the signs of an unhealthy relationship, will run at Jewish societies, schools and youth movements across the country.

Guests from schools, youth movements and universities, who attended the launch at All Star Lanes in Holborn, praised the initiative.

Sixth-former Debbie Kaye said: “People don’t want to sit and hear lectures. This is a fun way of tackling the subject.”

Dr Pam Alldred of Brunel University, London, who specialises in education and youth studies, said: “It’s a great idea to have this event in a social space – the kind of space where these conversations need to be had.”

The team behind the proposed new Jewish secondary school in north London has said it still intends to proceed with the bid – despite two existing Jewish secondary schools increasing their intake.

Last week plans were announced to merge two rival bids for new Jewish free schools, but in the same week JFS and JCoSS [pictured] said

they would offer an additional 90 places between them, while newly-approved planning permission at Hasmonean also incorporates additional places.

This week, a spokeswoman for the proposed new merged bid confirmed that an application would still be made in April, despite Jewish education chiefs saying the extra provision for places would be “suffi-

cient” to meet demand.

“We do not think the 90 extra places are sufficient to deal with the excess demand,” she said. “One of our key goals is to increase parental choice.”

The statement seems to contradict a comment from Rabbi David Meyer, director of Partnerships for Jewish Schools, who last week said the extra places “will help ensure

Jewish refugee: ‘I’m not related to Rudolf Hess’ Her surname was synonymous with one of the most shameful chapters in European history.

So it is little wonder German Jewish refugee Eleanor Hess sought to distance herself from her infamous namesake Rudolf when she enquired about receiving Foreign Office compensation.

Her tentative request about the pot of cash handed over to the British Government by the Germans nearly two decades after the end of the Second World War was dismissed.

Miss Hess’s speculative letter – among a cache of historical files released by the National Archives at Kew – was accompanied by a note denying being any relation to Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler’s deputy, as well as to revered British-born concert pianist Myra Hess.

Trump approval lowest among American Jews President Donald Trump’s approval rating among Jews in the United States is 31 percent – more than 11 percent lower than his overall rating of 42 percent, according to a new Gallup poll.

The survey points out that Jews appear to be reacting to Trump a l o n g party

lines. Some 64 percent of Jews identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party, according to data from the same time period, and 29 percent identify with or lean toward the Republican Party.

Gallup also points out that Trump has sent “mixed signals to American Jews about their position in the country and his administration’s stance toward Israel”.

ENVOY IS QUIZZED OVER AIR STRIKES

Russia has summoned its ambassador to Israel for clarification following Israeli airstrikes in Syria.

The country, which backs Syrian president Bashar Assad, summoned envoy Gary Koren, less than 24 hours after the Israeli military action, according to The Times of Israel.

In a rare statement, the Israel Defence Forces con-

firmed it had carried out aerial strikes in Syria and intercepted missiles launched at its aircraft from the ground.

No Israelis were hurt during the strikes or from the anti-aircraft fire, according to an IDF spokesman.

Israel is believed to have carried out several attacks on Syrian soil in recent years, but usually refrains from confirming or denying reports.

A UN affiliate has removed a report accusing Israel of apartheid from the internet following a request from the secretary-general of the international body.

Antonio Guterres asked the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, or EWCWA, to remove the report, which was said to “establish, on the basis of scholarly inquiry and

overwhelming evidence, that Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid,” Reuters reported.

Rima Khalaf, the commission’s chief, resigned because of Guterres’ pressure to remove the report, according to Reuters.

After the UN action, a previous link to the report yielded an error message and the report was not listed among

the publications on the website for the ESCWA, a Beirut-based agency comprised of 18 Arab member states, including one identified as the State of Palestine.

A UN spokesman had earlier said the report was published without consulting the secretariat and “does not reflect the views of the secretary-general”.

The United States and Israel sharply criticised the report.

“The US is outraged by the report,” Nikki Haley, the U.S. envoy to the UN, said. “The secretariat was right to distance itself.”

Israel’s ambassador, Danny Danon, said in a statement: “The attempt to smear and falsely label the only true democracy in the Middle East by creating a false analogy is despicable and constitutes a blatant lie.”

Actor and artist Corin Nemec has created a giant graffiti wall dedicated to Shimon Peres as a message of peace in Tel Aviv.

The American actor arrived in the country as part of a delegation with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and created the portrait of the late president at the Peres Centre for Peace and Innovation.

Tel Aviv-Jaffa mayor Ron Huldai also participated in the artwork alongside a group of young participants in Peres Centre programmes.

Nemec said: “I am honoured to be here in Tel Aviv, which is one of my favourite cities in the world, and at the Peres Centre.

Ya’alon: Netanyahu’s actions are an attack on democracy In a wide-ranging discussion with Jewish News, former defence minister Moshe Ya’alon reflects on the importance of a ‘moral compass’ in Israeli politics. Interview by Stephen Oryszczuk

srael’s former top soldier and defence minister laid out in London this week why he should be the country’s next prime minister, as he criticised Benjamin Netanyahu for “seeking to control the media” and “generating hatred”.

Former IDF General Moshe Ya’alon, who was in the UK for a Zionist Federation dinner, later took aim at the current Israeli coalition, which he said was “dominated by extremists” who were “attacking the Supreme Court” and threatening the rule of law.

In an interview with Jewish News, he said: “Ministers, members of the Knesset, the prime minister, yes he is doing it…

It’s unbelievable to me. It’s against democracy.”

Ya’alon was reacting to Israeli media reports this weekend that Netanyahu had threatened to call an election unless plans to create a new public-service broadcaster were abandoned, and said it was part of a pattern.

“The Supreme Court should be respected by the Jewish

Home Party and Likud [but] the Supreme Court is being attacked. It’s all the new nominations of the judges.

They are going to judge according to the law, but the fact that the Supreme Court is not respected means that we do not respect the rule of law.”

Ya’alon resigned from Netanyahu’s government last year after an Israeli soldier was filmed shooting a wounded Palestinian attacker in the head. Ya’alon said the soldier’s actions “completely contradicts IDF values and its battle ethics”, but Netanyahu argued for a pardon, calling the family in sympathy before the trial.

“To offend the Supreme Court, not to respect the rule of law, to generate hatred against the different sectors in Israeli society – against the Arabs, against the leftists – it’s ignoring Jewish values,” he said.

Alluding to the soldier’s case, he added: “When it comes to keeping Israel Jewish, meaning keeping our morals, first is the sanctity of life. I had a couple of disputes about this with the current coalition.”

Ya’alon recently quit the Likud party and announced that he was forming his own political party to challenge Netanyahu, about whom he may have been referring when he spoke of Israel’s leaders needing to “navigate by the [moral] compass, not by the number of Facebook likes”.

Referring to a recent Israeli law retroactively legalising dozens of illegal Jewish settlements built on privatelyowned Palestinian land, he asked: “Can you confiscate private land from someone – Arab, Israeli, whatever – then deliver it to someone else? No way. It’s going to be a chaotic situation.

It’s not going to be approved by the Attorney-General, nor by the Supreme Court, but the coalition voted for it. The only one who voted against it was Benny Begin. So, what – he’s leftist?”

Ya’alon said that while he was a “hawk” on security and defence, he supported Palestinian “autonomy” in the West Bank, and advocated greater inclusion of Arabs into Israeli society, such as by participating in national service as a substitute to serving in the IDF. “We started in 2007,” he said. “We had more Arabs appealing to serve in the national service than we had jobs.

This is the best way to integrate. It’s a great change for the integration of Israeli Arabs in Israeli society.

“President Rivlin has called for this. Is he leftist? This is [Ze’ev] Jabotinsky’s way.

“Today, the atmosphere is not to allow Arabs to be integrated into Israeli society and to generate hatred by the prime minister, defence minister, education minister – how come?

This is against our values as a Jewish and democratic state.”

Optimistic about Israel, but it’s being attacked for just ‘existing’ Moshe Ya’alon told guests at the Zionist Federation’s annual dinner on Sunday night he was optimistic about Israel’s economic and military position, but saw “no chance” of a settlement to the decades-old conflict.

Introduced by Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev as an “Israeli hero”, he said for too many people, it was “not about occupation since ’67, it’s about occupation since ’48. It’s about our very existence”. He attacked the “misconceptions” about the region that persist in international and public discourse.

While he was prepared to give up land for peace and firmly rejected the idea of annexing Area C [part of the West Bank], he suggested it was futile while Israel does not even feature in Palestinian textbooks and payments are made to

terrorists. He said: “Without dealing with education, there’s no chance of a better future for them.”

Turning to Syria, he said Israel made it clear from the start it would not take a position, while setting out red lines including violation of its sovereignty. He also pointed to the treatment in Israel of 3,000 Syrians injured in the conflict.

“I’m a great believer in interests not illusions, whether using stick or a carrot in this case.”

Ya’alon, who was not paid for his speech, claimed the Obama administration’s “disengagement” from the Middle East had left a vacuum and room for “rogue elements”.

Peace is possible There are powerful parallels to be drawn between the transformation of an IRA terrorist turned peacemaker and the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Martin McGuinness, who died this week, was a cold-blooded killer, whose journey from gunman to statesman saw him shake hands with the Queen and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ian Paisley.

For all his sins, he proved peace is possible between sworn enemies.

That tragedy and hate, even in the most entrenched conflict, does not need to be the status quo. And that even those who resort to violence to achieve their aims can harbour hope for compromise.

Like the IRA, Palestinian leaders opt for what they know best – bloodshed. Their hostility runs so deep they’re even prepared to kill themselves if it means Jews die too. This entrenched animosity must be wiped out for peace to take root. To achieve this, a Palestinian leader must emerge who fosters an atmosphere of hope and views the promise of a state as the fulfillment of a dream rather than a sell-out to Zionists. He must tackle decades of prejudice and reeducate his followers to respect human life.

Does such a Palestinian exist, capable of leading his people towards a new destiny? If he does, he will surely come from left field. Those mooted as possible successors to Mahmoud Abbas, when the first elections since 2005 finally take place, are the usual suspects – Yasser Arafat’s cousin Nasser al-Qudwa, technocrat Mohammad Shtayyeh, intelligence chief Majid Farraj and chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.

The only politician thought capable of uniting Gaza and Ramallah – Hamas and Fatah – and therefore able to carry a popular mandate, is convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti, currently languishing in jail – a place many fairly feel McGuinness should have spent most of his life.

The ringleaders of perhaps the world’s deepest and most depressing conflict might learn a long overdue lesson from the conversion of Martin McGuinness. That there is another way. A peaceful way. That after Abbas, there need not be another abyss.

MAYBE IT’S THE JEWS WHO DESERVE THE APOLOGY Baroness Tonge and friends are opening a can of worms expecting the British government to apologise for issuing the Balfour Declaration [Jewish News, 9 March].

Britain was not the only country to issue such a document. France did too and others because Palestine is strategic as it backs on to the area

near the Suez Canal.

It was the League of Nations that allocated Palestine for the Jewish homeland on behalf of the international community of the time. It is another error to say the Palestinian Arabs were indigenous to that territory. Not so. Arabs are indigenous to Arabia, Jews to Judea.

Arabs burst out of Arabia and overran most of the Middle East and North Africa, but they are not indigenous to Palestine. If any party has a grievance it is the Jewish people, when some 80 percent of Mandated Palestine was grabbed by the Hashemites and renamed Jordan. Britain did nothing

Perhaps we Jews should be the ones asking for an apology.

DISAPPOINTMENT OVER DISABLING COMMENTS ON SACKS’ BDS VIDEO I was disappointed to see, after watching Rabbi Lord Sacks’ Boycott Divestment and Sanctions movement video on YouTube, that comments were disabled [Jewish News, 9 March].

I’m a Green Party campaigner and took part as a student in both Israel Apartheid Week and Israel Awareness Week. I am all for open debate, so let me give your readers the facts.

The question of BDS came up in the Jewish News/GLA debates. The Green Party constituency candidate gave an honest answer; UKIP did not even know what BDS stands for. The now co-leader Jonathan Bartley emphasised free speech when asked about stopping Israel Apartheid Week.

In the video by Rabbi Sacks, BDS is depicted as a wall. I don’t need to explain to you how muddled this is.

BDS explicitly rejects anti-Semitism and the Green Party MP and elected members have supported the latest cross-party motions against anti-Semitism and have generally called for bridges not walls.

Israel has its weapons, cyber capability, army, navy, air force and allies, all of which make it more powerful than the Palestinians, though of course both sides need to stop the violence. I am concerned that we cannot get past this as a community of like-minded individuals.

Don’t apportion blame until you know the facts When the case of the now jailed IDF soldier Elor Azaria came to light, a former IDF soldier came forward with an account of a life-and-death scenario to which he had been a party some years earlier.

He and his commanding officer were waiting for a car carrying a known terrorist to arrive at a checkpoint, having received intelligence.

The car’s occupants were ordered out, and the commanding officer instructed his junior that under no circumstances was he to point his rifle at the suspect, as he appeared to be disarmed. In a fraction of a second, the terrorist managed to shoot the officer and his junior.

The officer was killed outright; his junior suffered terrible injuries, though he eventually recovered.

This was not an isolated example and the point my informant was forcefully making was that in such situations no one can say with certainty that a terrorist playing dead or severely injured is no longer a threat.

Jewish mental health taboo is slowly lifting HANNAH SHARRON

e like to think the best of ourselves. We believe we’re inclusive, accepting and supportive, as individuals and as a Jewish community. By and large, this is the case.

So why don’t Jewish students feel they can talk about mental health?

When one student disclosed a mental illness to her ex-housemate, she hoped this confidence would help her friend to understand better the thoughts swirling through her mind and affecting her behaviour.

Instead, the housemate slammed her bedroom door, telling the student she was being “selfish” by “ruining the house atmosphere”, and “it would be better if she went home”.

This student is not alone: the number who got in touch after we announced the relaunch of Reclaim, UJS’ mental health campaign, was overwhelming. They said they wanted to be involved due to their experiences of mental illness at university: feeling they had no one to talk to, not knowing where to seek support.

The taboo on mental health in the Jewish

community has definitely started to dissolve.

With campaigners like Jonny Benjamin and charities such as Jami, we’re in a much better place than we were a few years ago.

But through talking to students we found although mental health no longer holds the stigma it did, many people still don’t know how to offer support to friends who disclose a mental illness. This is problematic because many students leave home for university. Research in 2011 by JPR showed of 925 Jewish students surveyed, just one in five respondents (18 percent) lived at home during term-time. Those that don’t suddenly find themselves without the support networks they are used to; their friends become surrogate families but can’t offer that crucial support if they don’t know how.

That’s part of what Reclaim is about.

University also brings new experiences. Even if you choose to give drugs or alcohol a wide berth, there is still the stress of moving to a new city, learning at a faster pace and with less direct support, doing your own laundry, cooking and cleaning, meeting new people and having to find new friends.

Recent research by NUS shows 78 percent of students have experienced a mental health problem. There isn’t yet any research on Jewish

student mental health, but the JPR report cited above showed Jewish students are more worried than students in general about passing exams (76 percent versus 68 percent) and living up to their parents’ expectations (41 percent versus 32 percent). They are also more likely to have relationship issues, feel lonely and have personal health concerns, physical and mental.

While it would be dangerous to assume a causal link between these statistics and any presence of mental illness in the Jewish student population, the figures do show Jewish students feel disproportionately stressed, concerned or worried when compared to the general student population.

Reclaim is unique in that it is student-led.

There is a place for the amazing work done by student unions, universities and charities, but Reclaim is grassroots, the students in control.

Much of UJS’ work is about peer leadership, but with mental illness there is a special resonance. Many mental illnesses take control away from the sufferers, from their thoughts to their behaviour, affecting their ability to study, maintain friendships or even complete day-to-day activities like supermarket shopping. Reclaim literally empowers the students to reclaim the conversation about their mental health, a platform for student voices with speaker nights and online blogs and vlogs.

Reclaim does not set out to treat Jewish students who are suffering from mental illness, but we have heard the call for a mental health campaign that focuses on their real experiences on campus.

Most importantly, Reclaim will show those suffering with mental illness that as students and as members of the Jewish community, they are not alone.

An appalling mistake Israel simply must apologise for JENNI FRAZER

W

e know that war is appalling and sometimes terrible mistakes are made, errors of judgment, whatever you want to call them. But equally, sometimes, there is a time to know when to acknowledge such human errors, and quit while you are ahead.

The trap into which apologists for such mistakes fall is to end up defending the indefensible, and it is never an edifying sight.

I thought about this last week, when reading about the tragedy of Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Gaza clinician.

This is a man who lost three of his daughters and a niece when an Israeli tank shell struck his home during the final days of Operation Cast Lead in 2009.

Dr Abuelaish was unusual in many ways: he lived in the Gaza town of Jebaliya but worked as a fertility specialist and gynaecologist in Tel Hashomer, one of Israel’s biggest hospitals.

He – like his Israeli colleagues – treated Jews and Arabs alike. He sent his children to Israeli peace camps, and was a rare proponent of dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis. He spoke fluent Hebrew, had many friends in Israel, and was often contacted by journalists for updates during the first Gaza war, which was launched to end Hamas rocket fire on Israeli border towns.

On 16 January 2009, two days before Operation Cast Lead came to an end, the doctor phoned his journalist friend, Shlomo Eldar, live on air, and pleaded for help in evacuating the wounded, including a daughter and a niece.

He made the call moments after the Israeli shell had struck his home — and appalled Israeli viewers were brought face-to-face with the doctor’s agony.

But it was too late. Dr Abuelaish, whose wife had died from leukaemia four months before the shell attack, lost daughters Aya, Mayar and Bissan, and his niece, Noor.

The broken-hearted doctor moved from Gaza, and with his five surviving children began a new life in Canada.

Last week, Dr Abuelaish returned to

Israel to seek an apology and compensation from the Israeli government. It is, of course, impossible to put a price on such deaths and ridiculous to suppose otherwise. But the doctor wants to give any compensation to a charity he has established in memory of the four girls, the Daughters for Life Foundation, which promotes education for women and girls of Middle Eastern background.

It seemed to me on a first – and even a second – reading, that this was an open and shut case.

Israel has few enough friends in Gaza as it is: why not bow to the inevitable, accept the responsibility and tell a grieving father how sorry the state is?

But then I read this charmless comment on social media: “His is a most tragic story,

but with all due respect, the apology should be sought not from Israel, but Hamas who put them in harm’s way.”

And I realised that Israel was trying to defend the indefensible. And so it proved.

Court papers were produced in which it was argued that while there is no denying that the IDF shelled the doctor’s Gaza building, “the presence of other explosives in the building means the deaths and injuries might have been caused by those other explosives”.

“Might”? That’s a hell of a possible, Israel.

I am not arguing that Israel should apologise because Dr Abuelaish was a bit of a media star, but rather because there was a terrible error made, in the heat of war.

There’s a waiting path here, leading to the right thing to do. Please do it.

Sir Mick split opinion, but took the JLC to new heights HENRY GRUNWALD

FORMER CHAIRMAN, JEWISH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

T

he confirmation from Sir Mick Davis this week that he is stepping down as chair of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) marks the end of an era. I was Mick’s predecessor as the JLC’s first chair and have watched as he has raised its profile and ambition.

There are few people whose reputation polarises our community like him. There are those who feel that he has professionalised our community, improved our systems and taken us away from a model that wasn’t productive. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those who feel he is an undemocratic leader who has imposed his views on the community; that he has been at odds with the community due to his views on Israel.

However, I have no doubt that Sir Mick has left the community in a stronger position than when he first appeared as chairman of UJIA. As chair of the JLC, he has presided over a

significant expansion in its membership and its remit. His vision and strategic thought led the JLC to institute Commission on Jewish schools, from which emerged Partnerships for Jewish Schools; on Women in Jewish Leadership, from which came the Women in Jewish leadership programmes; on Informal Provision for Young People, from which came Reshet and on Synagogue Vitality.

He strengthened the JLC’s political engagement and its structures to counter the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS), raised the funds to counter delegitimisation of Israel and spoke strongly in support of leadership development, and Jewish and Israel education.

I also worked with him in his role as chair of the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission. He was a superb chair, who gently and skilfully led a distinguished group of Commissioners and the government to accept the proposal to build a fitting memorial to the Holocaust in the very heart of London.

He has been immensely generous in his philanthropy, and his time, with countless

organisations benefiting from his generosity.

This legacy of generosity will last well beyond his time with the JLC. I am, however, one of those who has been uneasy about the expansion of the role of the JLC and the direction in which it has gone. I feel it has mixed its message and diluted the original intention of its founders.

However, Sir Mick has recognised this and has instructed CEO Simon Johnson to undertake a consultation with council members on what they feel should be the JLC’s role in the coming years.

This reflects one of his characteristics that I most admire. A man of strong and principled opinions and views, he is also a sufficiently

strong and confident leader to be able to listen to opposing views and, if a sufficiently good case is made, to amend his opinions accordingly.

He is deeply and passionately committed to the long-term well-being, strength and sustainability of our community.

Few people care as deeply as he does or demonstrate that care as openly.

There is no doubt Sir Mick will continue to contribute to the Jewish community. During his time at the JLC, he has revolutionised it and had a huge impact on the community. I admire him greatly. We will all miss his passion, his vision, his strong leadership and his generosity.

I hope the organisation will thrive, but its new chair will have quite an act to follow.

United Synagogue women are content with their roles BRIAN GORDON

A

long-standing, positive feature of Anglo-Jewry is the visible demarcation – the clear blue water – between Orthodoxy and non-Orthodoxy.

In the UK, people know where they stand. The United, Federation, Adass, Sephardi and Provincial Hebrew congregations are Orthodox. Reform, Liberal, Progressive and Masorti are not. While there are differences among the congregations of both categories, they are not fundamental or prohibitive.

The distinction between Orthodox and non-Orthodox is crucial for shechita and kashrut. It’s crucial in determining halachic status for marriage, divorce and conversion. And ascertaining the Orthodox status of a shul and its rabbi.

Of all the Orthodox congregations, the United Synagogue (US) is the most inclusive. Its approach has always been to welcome as members all who are halachically Jewish, regardless of individual belief or observance.

Every now and again, erosions occur within its ranks. Mischievous little factions, usually from the membership, but occasionally spurred on by a minority of misguided ministers, try to stretch the religious boundaries. Their antics would draw the US leftwards to a point that could end blur the clear blue water and jeopardise its Orthodox status. It is for the right-minded clergy – in particular the London Beth Din and the Chief Rabbi – to accord zero-tolerance to these activists.

The erosions generally relate to the role of women in the shul and this issue has been the chink in the US’ armour.

Outside the shul, the matter of intergender relationships is a social phenomenon that can be argued and contained.

Inside, it poses a major threat. Kashrut, brit milah, Shabbat, festivals and Torah study – being essentially spiritual – sit comfortably with all shades of Orthodoxy.

Feminism does not, and never will.

The latest feminist ploy in the US is being cunningly packaged in the guise of “partnership minyanim”, where women are involved in running the service, giving sermons, maybe reading Torah portions, and who

knows what else? These are activities where women have never in Orthodox tradition been actively involved. It is pushing halachic boundaries to potential breaking point.

I am convinced the overwhelming majority of women within the US are content with their position in Judaism.

They have no desire to lead services, carry a Torah scroll, or wear tzitzit and tefillin, any more than their husbands have the urge to bake challot, light Shabbat candles or have babies.

Thoughtful Jewish women recognise their role is on a par with men, but with different responsibilities. Both the home and the synagogue are the fortresses of Jewish life – and remember, it is the mother who determines the child’s Jewish status.

If the partnership campaigners really can’t bear the idea of women sitting behind a mechitza or in the shul gallery, participating at services passively and modestly, it would be tempting to say they should push off and join Reform, where women can preach and sing to their heart’s content. But that would not be a religiously appropriate response.

So I would suggest they ask themselves if they really want to support and strengthen the US as a mainstream Orthodox entity. Or are they out to subvert it for their own political ends?

If they answer honestly, they may just find themselves reverting to the soundest partnership of all.

A

cross East Africa, 16 million people need immediate food assistance. Hundreds of people have already died of starvation. Drought and poor rains have decimated harvests, leaving millions of children malnourished and in need of urgent food and medical support. There is no doubt that much of the starvation has also been caused by human beings. Bombs and bullets, terrorism and war have destroyed infrastructure and forced millions of people to flee their homes. The international community must do more to bring conflicts to an end.

It’s easy to look at crises thousands of miles away and think that it’s either not our problem or not something we can do anything about.

Last week’s sedra (Torah portion), Ki Tissa, suggests otherwise.

East Africa may be far from the UK today, but it’s not far from where our ancestors became a people.

The Exodus narrative – the children of Israel escaping from slavery in Egypt – is remembered daily in our prayers and weekly each Shabbat.

The Exodus culminates with the children of Israel receiving the Torah in the Sinai Peninsula.

But events go quickly wrong in this week’s sedra: Moses has gone up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from God. He seems to be away for too long.

“When the people saw that Moses was late in coming down from the mountain, the people gathered against Aaron, and they said to him: ‘Come on! Make us gods that will go before us, because this man Moses, who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’”

(Exodus 32:1) Aaron, Moses’ brother, concedes to the people’s demand and together they build

the Golden Calf – an idol to worship – despite idolatry being expressly forbidden.

Although only a tiny fraction of the Jewish people were actually involved in the sin of the Golden Calf, the whole nation was held responsible: we all have a duty to act.

The Talmud goes even further and says very clearly that anyone who is able to protest against an injustice in the world, but chooses not to, is held accountable with the rest of the world’s citizens for their inaction.

(Shabbat 54b) And here’s the good news. Everyone can make a difference to this devastating crisis.

‘FOLLOWING THE RELIGIOUS ZIONIST DREAM’ Alex Galbinski speaks to Rabbi Andrew Shaw, CEO of Mizrachi UK, which aims to strengthen modern Othodoxy in the UK and people’s religious connection to Israel MORE THAN 50 YEARS AGO, leading American anthropologist Margaret Mead made a powerful observation: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Rav Doron Perez, Chief Executive of the World Mizrachi Movement, happily uses that quote when talking about Jewish history, the miracle of Chanukah – and his own organisation – a small but mighty cause that strives to punch above its weight.

Mizrachi UK, also known as The Centre for Religious Zionism in the UK, comprising just six paid staff members, describes itself as the UK’s leading framework for religious Zionism and modern Orthodoxy and provides educational and community programmes to strengthen people’s connection to Israel and Judaism.

Mizrachi is an acronym for Merkaz Ruchani (spiritual centre) and the movement was founded in 1902 in Vilnius at a world conference of religious Zionists.

The UK branch’s Chief Executive, Rabbi Andrew Shaw, says the global movement was the only religious movement to partner with Zionism.

“The Mizrachi founder wanted to create a movement that was both religious, Torah-based and Zionist, so he created religious Zionism, which supported Herzl in the Zionist dream, but also had a religious identity.”

So was born the global Mizrachi movement and today there are branches in the UK, Australia, South Africa, America and parts of South America. Mizrachi UK has had a presence since the 1950s, but there has been a resurgence in recent years with a new focus – it is now

purely educational, dealing with the religious Zionist modern Orthodox ideology. It is inspiring Anglo-Jewry with that ideology through schools, shuls, campuses, and communities.”

Mizrachi UK supporters embrace the modern world, but at the same time believe in an Orthodox framework for learning and observance, as well as a love for the state of Israel.

While Mizrachi UK is independent and unaffiliated to other organisations, it works most closely with the United Synagogue.

The charity was delighted when the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, accepted the role of president of Mizrachi UK. He wrote in one of its newsletters: “I [became president] because I believe that, as Jews, our eternal challenge is both straightforward and also awash with complexity: How can we sanctify the innovations of the modern world in accordance with our eternal Jewish values?

In Mizrachi, I see a movement which strives to strike that ideal balance.”

Rabbi Shaw has 15 years’ experience as the community development Rabbi at Stanmore and Canons Park United Synagogue and also founded Tribe, the United Synagogue’s youth division as well as directing its educational arm – Living and Learning – for six years.

Explaining that Mizrachi UK believes Torah should be at the centre of Zionism, he says: “We see the Zionist dream as a religious obligation. We see Israel not just as a secular state that came into being. We believe it is a miracle that Hashem returned us to our land after 2,000 years.”

Looking more long-term, Mizrachi UK seeks to help create the UK’s next generation of modern Orthodox Zionist Jewish leaders. It is working with an organisation called Manhigut Toranit (Torah leadership) on a five-year accelerated programme in Jerusalem, taking top Israeli students fluent in English and giving them “an incredible level of Torah scholarship”.

These scholars are sent out into the diaspora to “inspire the community.”

The first graduates – Rabbi Eliyahu and Yocheved Silverman – began work in the UK in September and are making a “huge impression” teaching in Hasmonean and in the wider community.

Shaw says: “We are also producing home-grown rabbis from the modern Orthodox background as well”. The organisation wants to create rabbis who have been raised in the modern Orthodox Zionist world, who have been to university and who very much live the Mizrachi ideology.

“There’s been a real gap in the creation of those types of leaders,” he says.

“We want to create a conveyor belt of rabbinic leadership, with rabbis training in Israel, who will eventually be part of the United Synagogue, our schools, campuses and our communities.”

Mizrachi UK also works with various campuses because it believes the students who have been educated through Bnei Akiva or have been to Israel on their gap year, are “tremendous leaders”.

“We want to motivate them to take on leadership roles on campus and in the wider community. They are students, part of the world we live in, and are passionate. We want them to share their passion, knowledge and experience while they’re on campus with their peers.”

Mizrachi UK is staging some major events in the near future. “We’re bringing over 13 of the top educators from Israel, and they’re being sent all

over the country for Shabbat,” explains Shaw. “And on Sunday, 7 May, we’re bringing everyone together for a whole day of inspiration at Kinloss. It will be a massive event, engaging thousands of people across the community.”

The 50th anniversary of Yom Yerushalayim will be celebrated with a range of events, including the facilitation of multiple celebrations across the UK, and a global celebration in Jerusalem coordinated by World Mizrachi.

A competition will also see 50 lucky students awarded a subsidised trip to be part of this momentous occasion.

Shaw says Mizrachi UK is expanding and working with communities outside of London. It has recently appointed a youth couple to work in Leeds and hope to employ a rabbinic couple in Manchester this autumn.

“By July, we hope to have a national staff of 13 people, which is remarkable growth in the space of 18 months when we only had one!’

“We’ve got to strengthen our community, and we work very closely within it with schools, shuls and campuses.

“In 10 years’ time, we hope the community will have far more of a strong committed modern Orthodox and religious Zionist voice in our lay leadership, rabbinic leadership, school leadership and on campus.

“That’s the dream and we are on our way, but we’ve got a long way to go.” mizrachi.org.uk

The 55-year-old accountant crossed the line in a time of 2:40, raising £10,000 for Kisharon.

3ZEV’S SHALVA RUN

Hasmonean pupil Zev Bloom raised £5,000 to help Shalva’s children and their families when he took part in the half-marathon event. Running along with a group of boys and girls from Hasmonean and JFS, he recorded the fastest time in his age group for the distance. He said: “It was amazing and the fact I was running for Shalva made it even more special.”

Two 11-year-olds took part in the 10km run in Jerusalem, raising £1,000 for the city’s Shaare Zedek’s Wilf Children’s Hospital.

Israeli-born Shimi Davidson was born in Shaare Zedek, although is also a UK citizen as both his parents are Londoners, while Dovi Sarzin’s family made aliyah four years ago. They said: “It was so encouraging to be cheered on by the crowds. We both completed the 10km run in under an hour. We can’t wait to raise money for the children of Shaare Zedek in next year’s Jerusalem Marathon.’

‘Be Our Guest’ were the words on everyone’s lips at Kidanza dance school’s musical extravaganza at Shaw Theatre in Euston on Sunday. The title of one of the songs on the programme, as well as the show theme, it was a celebration of well-loved children’s classics performed by more than 150 dancers aged between three and 16 to celebrate Purim. Kidanza director Hila Moussaioff directed, choreographed and produced the show, alongside daughter Judi. The talent of the whole dance school was obvious and the joy with which the children danced and their beautiful and colourful costumes created a wonderful atmosphere.

A woman of measure Alex Galbinski speaks to June Kenton, the driving force behind Rigby & Peller and lingerie fitter to the Queen…

P

eople say they would kill to know what I know – and that is exactly what they would have to do.”

So begins June Kenton, the driving force behind the famous luxury lingerie brand Rigby & Peller, in the wry opening to her new autobiography, Storm In a D-Cup. The corsetière to the Queen has helped hundreds of celebrity clients over the years, but her lips remain tighter than well-fitted lingerie over their secrets.

“I never say anything I’ll regret,” says the lively 81-year-old. What she will tell me – and writes in the book – is about being a bundle of nerves on her first visit to Buckingham Palace.

“But it was all brilliant, we got on very well and I’ve had the Royal Warrant since 1982, so I must be doing something right,” she laughs.

Indeed she is. Her fascinating book tells the story of how she and Harold, her loving and supportive husband of 55 years, grew a business from one shop into an empire that now includes

nine UK outlets and more than 40 worldwide, including Hong Kong, China, Dubai, and the US. “The [Rigby & Peller] name is known all over the world, which is so satisfying because it’s what I’ve worked for,” says Kenton, whose client list reads like a celebrity who’s who.

There’s Dawn French (“just gorgeous”), Dame Barbara Cartland (“an extraordinary woman”), Princess Margaret, Joan Collins (“she would come into the shop and stand by the door as if to say ‘I’m here’”), Jo Brand (also an “extraordinary woman”) and Theresa May. Retailing is in her blood. Her family owned a successful womenswear shop in Kilburn that also sold lingerie.

It was while working as a showroom assistant for a clothing wholesaler that she met fellow employee Harold. After marrying in 1962, they bought a clothes shop in Brixton market and, less than two years later, opened another in Croydon.

The third, Contour, came in 1970, selling lingerie right next to Harrods, to huge success. In 1982 Tessa Seiden, owner of made-to-measure corsetiere Rigby & Peller (and niece of its Hungarian Jewish refugee co-founder Gita Peller), asked the Kentons if they would buy her struggling store.

“Harold decided he was not interested. ‘We don’t need Rigby & Peller. I don’t want Rigby & Peller. We can’t afford Rigby & Peller.’ We bought Rigby & Peller,” Kenton writes. And the rest is history.

It riles Kenton that 85 percent of women wear the wrong size bra which they have usually fitted themselves or bought in a supermarket with dinner.

“I couldn’t understand how people

were walking around wearing the wrong size bra,” Kenton tells me.

“It’s because they don’t have a proper fitting. The tape measure doesn’t tell you anything – you have to use your eyes. We go into the fitting room and put bras on you. It’s an art form.”

She credits this approach with the turnaround of Rigby & Peller into a leading retailer. “You’d be amazed how many women are uncomfortable – they walk and they’re bouncing up and down, falling out of their bras.

“You don’t realise how it affects you – running for the bus, picking up a child; every time you move, it moves.

Most people are wearing bras too small in the cup and too big around.

It’s so important to wear the right bra – for your health and well-being and what your clothes look like.”

It is clear the Kentons are grafters who approach life with a terrifically positive outlook – including when business ideas fell short, or during ill health such as Kenton’s breast cancer diagnosis aged 71, and her subsequent mastectomy and reconstruction.

The couple made things happen.

Through the Croydon branch of WIZO, Kenton became part of the Women’s Campaign for Soviet Jewry, aiming to persuade the Soviet Government of the 1970s to allow Jews to leave. Kenton phoned one such refusenik family regularly for 17 years in a show of solidarity.

“And we got them out,” she says.

“There’s no such thing as can’t – if you want to, you can. You can’t sit in your own bubble – you have to go out and make something happen.”

A month before her 60th birthday in 1995, Kenton completed her first charity trek , ‘Mount Sinai to the

She went on to do another four treks, raising around £300,000 for the cause.

Kenton, who now lives in Bushey Heath and is a member of her childhood synagogue in St John’s Wood, speaks lovingly of her two adopted children – David, 51, is a director of Rigby & Peller and works with the Community Security Trust while Jill, 46, is a voiceover artist.

While the grandmother-of-three remains tight-lipped over clients, she does write that “one customer

“She was very caring. Curator Jo Rosenthal says there was “a strong sense of bringing the exhibition back by public demand”, such was its impact on visitors when it first arrived here four years ago.

One important addition to the display is an original sketch designed by Amy’s friend and tattoo artist, Henry Hate. He subsequently inked the design, showing Amy’s paternal grandmother, Cynthia, onto the musician’s left arm, as a tribute to the matriarch’s eternal youthfulness and as Amy liked to say, ‘va va voom’.

Rosenthal explains: “They collaborated together on this design. Cynthia was a strong, charismatic, dynamic and very fashionable woman, who had a massive influence on Amy.” Outside the museum, the tribute to Amy spills out onto the streets with artwork sprinkled around Camden, including a striking closeup of Amy’s face painted onto the outside wall of Nemesis Tattoo in Stucley Place, as well as a smouldering black-and-white image in Miller Street.  Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait runs until 24 September at the Jewish Museum in Camden.

PREPARATION TIME 20 MINUTES

A straightforward cake to make such as this one is ideal at Pesach, especially as it can be made in one bowl. Carrots and pistachio nuts work well together to produce a moist cake that all the family will enjoy. Buying the pistachio nuts in their shells is a lot cheaper; although it is a little time consuming to shell them, it is well worth the effort.

COOKING TIME 1 HOUR

3 large eggs 120g caster sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 200g ground almonds 100g desiccated coconut 2 teaspoons cinnamon 150g unsalted butter/ non-dairy margarine – melted 2 large carrots – peeled and coarsely grated 100g pistachio nuts – roughly chopped 1 handful raisins Icing sugar for decoration (optional) Sliced pistachios for decoration (optional)

2 In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, sugar and vanilla together.

3 Then add the ground almonds, coconut, cinnamon and stir, before adding in the butter and giving the ingredients a thorough mix.

4 Add the grated carrots, pistachios and raisins and mix again until all ingredients are evenly incorporated and then gently pour the mixture into your cake tin.

5 Bake for one hour.

6 Allow the cake to cool overnight before cutting it (it comes out much moister this way).

7 Decorate with sifted icing sugar and sliced pistachios before serving.

BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER So enthusiastic were the people in donating to the construction of the Mishkan, the portable Tabernacle, they had to be told to stop. Informed by the wise-hearted people overseeing the project that they had sufficient supplies, Moses had to ask them to stop doing more work or bringing any more materials.

To understand the significance of this, we must note two recurring themes in Vayakhel: Melacha or creative activity and chacham leiv, wise-hearted people. Both were necessary for the Mishkan construction as the work was carried out by those with the wisdom necessary to produce the desired end result.

Melacha is also mentioned at the beginning of the sedra and relates to the prohibition of creative activity on Shabbat.

Our sages derive that the types of work employed in making the Mishkan are forbidden on the Sabbath day.

But it’s the theme of chacham leiv that provides us with a deeper link. It took a degree of wisdom for those involved in the Mishkan to recognise that, sometimes, less is more.

Surely that’s also the message of Shabbat – although working seven days may appear to be more productive than working six, those who are wise-hearted understand that isn’t the case. The success of any project, be it a temporary desert structure or life itself, depends as much on putting in the hard work as it does on knowing when to say enough.

Sometimes, having too much does not enhance what we are trying to achieve endangers it and so being conscious of that subtlety is the true hallmark of wisdom.

Daniel is most famous for surviving being thrown into a den of hungry lions for defying the king’s order to pray only to his gods.

When Nebuchadnezzar threw Daniel’s friends into a superheated furnace for not worshipping his deity, they not only survived, but emerged unscathed.

BY RABBI BENJI STANLEY “The Eternal …said to Moses, I see that this is a stiffnecked people. Now… My anger may blaze forth against them and…destroy them” (Exodus 32:9-10).

Talk about an angry, vengeful God! The Bible, after all, often talks about one. Near its beginning, after the arguably small mistake of eating off-limits fruit, God banishes Adam from the Garden of Eden and curses Adam and Eve by sentencing them to various forms of painful labour.

At the end of the Five Books, Moses is permitted to look to the promised land, his life’s work, yet “died there… at the command of the Eternal” (Deuteronomy 34:5) as a punishment for hitting a rock in a moment of anger.

The Bible may begin and end with an angry, punitive God, who also features during much of the middle Yet, Torah, we are told by Rabbi Simlai in the Talmud “…begins and ends with loving kindness: it begins with: “the Eternal God made garments for the skin of Adam and his wife, and

clothed them” (Genesis 3:21). It ends with: “He [God] buried him [Moses] in the valley (Deuteronomy 34:6)”.

This could seem a remarkably selective act of reading from Rabbi Simlai. We have seen that God clothes Adam and Eve, while exiling and cursing them. He buries Moses – after condemning him to death outside the Promised Land.

Torah is a book and process, in which we must learn generous, kind behaviour from the text and prioritise some moments over others.

On one hand, we can wrestle with harshness in the world and recognise our anger at an angry God and a difficult text.

On the other hand, Rabbi Simlai teaches us to maintain a relationship with God and Torah, asking for kindness and justice from God and ourselves.

BY RABBI DANNY RICH Citing the recent example of Donald Trump’s returns, how we pay our taxes and how much we pay is often at the top of political and news agendas.

Judaism expects everyone to contribute a fair share. It’s a recurring theme in the Torah and Rabbinic literature, with the longstanding Talmudic principle of dina malchuta dina (“the law of the land is the law”).

But Progressive Judaism also offers two more reasons why paying tax is so important, even if you are president of the United States.

The first is historical. Our movement was founded in the first decade of the 19th century in Germany out of the intellectual milieu of the Enlightenment and the political environ-

ment of the French Revolution.

At that time, the Jews were moving from being a pariah people, restricted from the norms of life to being part of the new national state.

Progressive Judaism offered an opportunity to be both Jewish and a citizen of the modern state, and it follows that if Jews were to claim rights, they also had responsibilities.

These obligations, in my view,

include voting and participating in public life and paying any tax levied by a democratically elected government.

The second reason is ethical.

Progressive Judaism has sought to reclaim the Hebrew Prophetic idea that the performance of ritual obligations is acceptable to God only from Jews whose ethical behaviour accords with the core teachings of Judaism.

Progressive Judaism declares the ethical mitzvot of a higher order than the ritual ones.

Ethical mitzvot (support for the widow and the orphan, for example) are obligatory but some of that activity today is carried out by the state, utilising the taxes of citizens.

The evasion of taxes is therefore both a major breach of Jewish ethics and an attack on the modern, democratic state.  Danny Rich is senior rabbi and chief executive of Liberal Judaism

I highly recommend kosher cruising, which is becoming more and more popular with passengers wanting to enjoy a holiday cruise without having to worry about kosher dining.

I agree it is more expensive, but you must realise that there is an enormous difference between the standard “airline style” kosher boxes provided on most cruise lines at no additional cost or a specifically organised kosher cruise arrangement with a separate dining area exclusively available for kosher travellers.

An onboard kosher programme will provide superb freshly-prepared meals and a standard of cuisine comparable to any high-class kosher restaurant. All this,

their home’s value, with the exact amount dependent on their age and health. The cost of borrowing does not impact upon your pocket during your lifetime, but will reduce your estate.

Claire Dear Claire I’m sorry to hear about your difficult situation. The divorce process can often move painfully slowly, leaving the weaker financial party without enough money to meet their day-to-day needs.

At any time during the divorce process and before the court deals with the full financial application, you can make an application to the court for maintenance. In legal jargon this is referred to as ‘maintenance pending suit’.

If you decide to go ahead

with this application, you will have to supply the court with full details of your income and income needs. Your husband will be required to do the same.

When dealing with these applications I have often seen clients’ ‘needs’ substantially exceed the marital standard of living, which will not win any favours with the judge and there is case law of applications being rejected.

If you are genuinely unable to pay for what you really need over the coming months, I’d advise you make this application and contact a direct access barrister as soon as possible so it can be dealt with as a priority.

If you’re successful, you’ll be able to ask the court to make an order that your husband pay your costs. Good luck.

Oakwood’s championship dream dashed by title rivals Redbridge

Oakwood’s joint-manager Ric Blank has admitted this season’s Premier Division title is now Redbridge’s to lose after the sides played out a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s top-ofthe-table clash.

The O’s went into the game knowing victory would leave them needing to win their final game of the season to secure the title, however Sunday’s stalemate means Redbridge now have the destiny of the title in their own hands, with them needing to win their remaining four games to be crowned champions.

Redbridge boss Jon Jacobs claimed the result was better for Oakwood, saying they were still “clear favourites” in the title race, but O’s jointmanager Blank dismissed those comments, saying: “I found them interesting, especially considering some of their players were celebrating the draw.

“I would never celebrate a draw, but every team is different. I don’t see their run-in as particularly daunting given Hendon’s recent

struggles, but it’s [the title] totally out of our hands.”

Remaining philosophical on how the season may pan out, Blank said: “To even be in this race is quite something. We have given everything. Our focus is now beating Lions, we have to do that otherwise we’ll have no chance.

But I’m immensely proud of the boys and the run they’ve been on. If it’s not enough then I will applaud Redbridge and move on with my life.”

Sticking by his views, Jacobs said: “Having points in hand is always better so Oakwood are clear favourites.

“This result probably suits them more, with us needing four wins from four tough games, while they are playing a team with their eyes on cup glory in their only remaining fixture.

We have a tough challenge, but my boys are very motivated to achieve their target and we’ll do our best in our final four fixtures to [try and] pinch the title.”

Sunday’s match was the proverbial game of two halves, with Oakwood dominating the first half and Redbridge enjoying the better of the second.

fired the O’s ahead midway through the half with a typical emphatic finish, but Redbridge equalised with the last kick of the half when Dean Nyman lashed the ball past Jonny Blain.

Both managers were though in agreement that the draw was a fair result. Blank said: “We were absolutely magnificent in the first half and should have been out of sight. They were better in the second half and we were on the ropes for the first 15/20 minutes. We stabilised after that, but couldn’t create the killer chance and overall it was a fair result.”

Jacobs said: “They were much the better side in the first half, but it was all us in the second, where they looked vulnerable and were defending for their lives. We shaded the game after the break, but I think on reflection, the draw was a fair result.

“What this does is keep our season going into April and we will be fighting like crazy to see a from successful end to Watch action table the month.” eth ftop-o

Israel boss plans to shock Spain Elisha Levy said his Israel side will look to attack Spain when the sides meet in their 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday night.

The Israelis go into the game, which is taking place in Gijon, on the back of three wins, which sees them sit third in their qualifying group, a point behind the joint-leaders, Spain and Italy.

Despite going into the game as major underdogs, Levy says his team won’t turn up for the game simply to defend. He said: “We know we are facing one of the strongest national teams in the world, but we will go to Spain with the goal of playing positive football.

“They may be one of the best teams in the world, but we’re not going to Spain to mess around. There’s a buzz

about our team after the last three wins.

“We want to threaten Spain’s goal and do all we can to get a good result.

We don’t want to capitulate against any opponent. This is a big test for us, but we will do our best.”

Four British-based players were part of the 23-man squad, Hibernian goalkeeper Ofir Marciano, Celtic’s Nir Bitton and Brighton & Hove Albion duo Tomer Hemed and Biram Kayal – though the latter was forced to return back to England having picked up an injury.

Only the winners of each group will qualify automatically for next summer’s tournament in Russia, with the eight best runners-up taking part in a two-leg play-off.

The two countries have met on four previous occasions, with Spain having won three of the matches. The last game between the two was a 1-1 draw in a 2002 World Cup qualifier in Tel Aviv.


