Corbyn announces new inquiry A new investigation into Ken Livingstone will be held after a Labour panel failed to expel the former London mayor, party leader Jeremy Corbyn has announced. Livingstone was handed a two-year suspension on Tuesday for bringing the party into disrepute for his comments on Hitler supporting Zionism – a decision that sparked a chorus of condemnation and caused dozens of Labour Party members to rip up their membership cards. By yesterday afternoon, Corbyn – who earlier spoke to Jewish Labour Movement’s Jeremy Newmark – said that, since the verdict, Livingstone had “failed to acknowledge or apologise for the hurt he has caused... “Many people are understandably upset that he has continued to make which could open him to further disciplinary action”. He added: “Ken’s subsequent comments and actions will now be considered by the National Executive Committee after representations from party members.” More than 100 MPs backed a letter from JLM condemning the betrayal of the party’s values over antiSemitism and the group has also published a draft motion that it intends to take to the party’s annual conference. Livingstone’s reaction to the verdict, including new comments on the topic and a lack of apology, led Corbyn to announce the National Executive Committee would revisit it “after representations from party members”. The reaction followed howls of criticism from

The Chief Rabbi has led a chorus of communal disgust at the Labour Party’s decision not to expel Ken Livingstone. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis was among the first to react to Tuesday’s news, saying: “This was a chance for Labour to show that it would not tolerate wilful and unapologetic baiting of the Jewish community, by shamefully using the Holocaust as a tool with which to inflict the maximum amount of offence.” Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Simon Johnson said he was “deeply disappointed,” adding: “The Labour Party’s structures should have had the courage to issue a firmer penalty if they feel as they did, that his comments brought the party into disrepute.” He said the Jewish community “judged the Labour Party on its actions, not on its rhetoric,” adding that the decision showed the party’s processes were “insufficient”. Board of Deputies President Jonathan Arkush said: “Relations between the Labour Party and the Jewish community have reached a new all-time low.” A statement from the Community Security Trust added: “This decision strengthens real anti-Semites and their fellow travellers, and will leave the Jewish community less confident than ever that Labour is serious about dealing with anti-Semitism.”

Livingstone also made the wild claim that this newspaper opposes his expulsion from the Labour Party – mistaking a blog published on the website with Jewish News editorial. The post, entitled ‘Kicking out Ken Livingstone for Hitler remark would be a bad mistake’, was written by blogger and barrister David Wolchover. Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer said: “This emphasises how deluded the man has become. We publish all manner of online blogs. These are clearly individual views and not the editorial line of the newspaper, which has staunchly led calls for Livingstone’s expulsion.”

The Labour Party was built to fight racism, fascism and discrimination wherever it exists in society. Yesterday, my party, the party of Manny Shinwell, of Ian Mikardo, and of Alf Dubs failed in its founding principle. It fell short of John McDonnell’s call of zero-tolerance for antisemitism, and instead has reaffirmed Momentum chair Jon Lansman’s statement that the left has a “blind spot on anti-Semitism”. Let’s be clear. Ken Livingstone, the former Mayor of London who did so much to transform our capital, has brought the Labour Party into disrepute. We know this because he has said so himself. He was found guilty on all three charges of bringing the party into disrepute. The devastating blow for the Jewish community, and Holocaust survivors, who were caused so much pain and anguish by Mr Livingstone is in the sentencing. A two-year suspension from holding office (with one year already factored in) is a betrayal of our principles. Mr Livingstone is still a member of our party, is still able to attend meetings and vote, and to influence the future of our policies. This sends out the message that there is a revolving door, whereby people can revise the history of the Shoah, sit quietly for a year and then return to active politics as if nothing

has happened. Today, we have seen wall-to-wall consensus from within the Jewish community and from all sections of the Labour Party. From Tom Watson MP, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis. From Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Manchester Metro Mayoral Candidate Andy Burnham and all the sections of the Jewish community. The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has published a letter from more than 100 Labour MPs and 50 Labour peers condemning this decision. We have called for the National Executive Committee to consider a new disciplinary process based upon Ken’s subsequent remarks and triumphalism after the verdict. These calls have been widely backed by party leaders including Jeremy Corbyn and Shadow Attorney General Shami Chakrabarti. If this is not delivered, we have pledged to take the matter all the way to an open debate at Party Conference in September. I have asked Jewish Labour members to heed the lesson of Cable Street: in the face of adversity you stay, you stand, you fight. The JLM will continue to battle to ensure that the Labour Party remains true to our founding principles, not just welcoming Jews, but celebrating our faith, history and heritage. Join JLM, stand with us against antiSemitism and all forms of hatred in the Labour Party and in wider society. After all, that’s what the Labour Party was built to do.

Strangeness on a train: my trip with Ken BY JUSTIN COHEN NEWS EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS

I didn’t need the former London mayor to claim Jewish News was backing him to know he was on another planet. A 13-minute journey alone (along with a carriage packed with commuters) with him on the northbound Jubilee Line was more than enough to do that. That’s the decidedly bizarre position I found myself within minutes of the conclusion of his three-day disciplinary hearing into charges he brought the party into disrepute. As he walked at pace away from the hearing towards St James’ Park station, the media pack in hot pursuit, I made it clear to the former mayor I was from a Jewish newspaper. As the rest of the pack peeled away, I suggested he stop hurtling towards the Underground for two minutes, only for him to invite me to join him on the journey home instead. He called his wife, casually telling her he hadn’t been expelled and would shortly be home for dinner. What followed was an experience that will surely always rank as one of the most bizarre of my career. As we

made our way down the escalators, he pointed out that he expected the Jewish Chronicle would be rather angry at the result. I felt obliged, if a little shocked, to have to point out that we would be too, stressing again, when he sought my views, the hurt he had caused. I started filming as we reached the platform at Westminster, but he insisted he couldn’t wait as the next train hurtled into the platform. On to the train we went, the man who is currently the Jewish community enemy number one and the news editor of a paper that last week called for ‘Kenxit’. It was an odd experience, not just because we were surrounded by bemused tourists and locals taking snaps, but perhaps all the more so because he remained doggedly attached to his version of events and strikingly unrepentant. “I’ve had the children of Holocaust survivors come up to me and say ‘my dad would have agreed with what you say,’” he said. How does he feel to have caused further damage to Labour relations with British Jews? “I’d simply say to the Jewish community: look at my record; the eight years I was mayor antiSemitic incidents were halved. Boris

Johnson came to office and in his first year they went up 60 percent.” Not a hint of irony that his time as mayor will be remembered by AngloJewry for many things, such as his concentration camp guard slur and his hosting of hate preacher Yusuf al-Qaradawi (an invitation he also defended during our journey). He offered perhaps his strangest defence yet when I suggested his pattern of behaviour suggested a Holocaust obsession. He said the terms ‘jumped up little Hitler’ and ‘isn’t that what concentration camp guards said?’ when responding to comments of ‘‘I’m just doing my job’ were “common bits of slang and abuse back in the 1950s”. At one point he acknowledged he hadn’t provided a “detailed historical analysis” in his original comments about Hitler and Zionism. Ah, perhaps we’re getting somewhere. You acknowledge that Hitler didn’t support the creation of a Jewish state yet saying he supported Zionism means just that, I pointed out. “It’s not the same thing,” he said. I was clearly hitting my head against a brick wall. He had always told the truth in politics, he insisted. “I haven’t been to a New Labour training school for duplicity and eva-

sion. It’s my fault.” On at least three occasions I offered him the chance to apologise. “If anyone was upset I’m really sorry about that,” is the best he could muster. When I asked if he could say it without the word ‘if’, he pointedly refused. It no longer particularly matters how much the former mayor digs himself in. What matters is that Labour’s disciplinary panel found against him and still didn’t expel him. Unless it was a very different Livingstone to the one I encountered, the panel took its decision knowing he remained unrepentant and would likely continue the behaviour that brought the party into disrepute in the first place. No wonder questions are being asked about the make-up of the panel and what Livingstone said when asked – as the rules dictate – whether there were mitigating circumstances.

Leslie Diamond, who was attacked in Elmgate Gardens, off Hale Lane, said: “One jumped on me from behind, threw me on the floor and was strangling me so hard I was sure I was going to die.

I could not breathe at all. I was punched in the chest. They pulled the rings off my hand.” She said the attackers stole her mother’s wedding ring, which she described as “yellow gold and platinum with an inscription on the inside”, and her own engagement ring. The challenger for the post of general secretary of Unite, Britain’s biggest trade union, Gerard Coyne, last night issued a furious denunciation of Ken Livingstone and the two panellists on the Livingstone hearing who are Unite members. Coyne described Livingstone’s comments “and total lack of contrition” as “grotesque” but, in response to suggestions the two Unite representatives on the Labour National Constitution Committee panel, Russell Cartwright and Brenda Warrington, “had argued against having a hearing”, Coyne told Jewish News: “I am ashamed that representatives of my union on the NCC panel were allegedly arguing against having any hearing at all”. And, in a reference to the role of other Unite members at Labour’s disputes committee, considering allegations of antisemitism at the Oxford University Labour Club, Coyne said: “The leadership of Unite seems to think its role in the Labour Party is to defend the indefensible”. He added: “There is a troubling trend of racism within the Labour movement. I had to report to the police antiSemitic comments and images tweeted at me last month. “We need to stamp this out. If a member of Unite acted in the way Mr Livingstone has, under my leadership they would be expelled.” Police are understood to still be investigating a series of tweets and images sent to Coyne on social media by someone identifying themselves only as ‘1UnionBloke’. Coyne’s office says police have not yet established who was responsible for

the tweets but, according to the Guido Fawkes political website, some Unite officials believe the former account holder to have been “a senior official in Unite”. Asked earlier yesterday morning about the decision to suspend rather than expel Livingstone, Pauline Doyle, spokeswoman for current Unite general secretary Len McCluskey, said: “This is a matter for the Labour Party, not Unite, so we will not be making any comment.” But on BBC Radio 5 later, McCluskey said Labour had been right to suspend Livingstone for his “bizarre” comments. But he described the wider controversy as “mood music” being exploited by political enemies of Corbyn. The Unite chief said the row had been “got up” by the rightwing press, “aided and abetted by those Labour MPs who wake up and think, what stick can we beat Jeremy with?” Questions have now emerged over how two members of the same union, Unite, came to sit on the Livingstone hearing panel. Cartwright is the secretary of the parliamentary staff branch of Unite, while Warrington is a Tameside councillor and long-standing member of Unite. The panel chair, Rose Burley, is a member of Walsall South constituency Labour party and is branch secretary of her local GMB union. Cartwright is also understood to be a member of the activist group the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy, which has close links with the hard-left Momentum organisation which is an aggressive backer of McCluskey’s campaign to remain general secretary of Unite.

Fury at Cork conference slurs Community leaders this week condemned “deplorable” statements made at a conference in Ireland examining the legal legitimacy of Israel – urging the event’s financial backers to withdraw future funding. It comes after one of the speakers, American academic Professor Joel Kovel, told the audience in Cork that five Mossad agents were “cheering” the destruction of the Twin Towers during the 9/11 attacks on New York in 2001. “As the towers burned, do you know about the five painters cheering on the process from across the river?” Kovel asked the audience. “They were Mossad agents, six of them actually. They were arrested and disappeared from the face of the earth.” Audience members challenged the statement as “not true” and “anti-Semitic”. A statement later issued by Jewish Human Rights

Professor Geoffrey Alderman spoke at the event, despite coming under communal pressure to pull out. He said: “I’ve had fantastic feedback from participants. One emailed me to say my paper changed his views. I consider this a victory. Many participants said my paper raised issues about which they were unaware, namely the geographical area now called Jordan wasoriginally part of the British Mandate of Palestine,

and that the then-colonial secretary (Churchill) banned Jews from settling east of the Jordan River. So if I achieved nothing else, I brought facts to which participants were not aware.” He added: “The other point I raised which caused some hard thinking was that Israel administers the West Bank in succession to Britain, not Jordan, which illegally occupied the area from 1948 to 1967. “I drew attention to the fact that the determination to invade the Jewish state in 1948 is the only example I can think of where UN member states took military action to frustrate a UN resolution. I was treated with the courtesy and in general it was a civilised event.”

TWO CHARGED FOR ALLEGED ATTACK NEAR AIPAC EVENT Two men have been charged with a hate crime for an assault on an Arab teacher, allegedly carried out by members of the Jewish Defence League outside last week’s AIPAC conference in Washington, D.C. The assailants were named by a police spokeswoman as Yosef Steynovitz, 32, who was charged with assault with significant bodily injury, and Rami Lubranicki, 59, who was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

ISRAEL SELECTS ITS FIRST FEMALE MUSLIM DIPLOMAT Israel has appointed its first female Muslim diplomat. The Foreign Ministry has selected Rasha Atamny, 31, to represent the state in Ankara, Turkey. Atamny, who is completing the final months of the ministry’s cadet course, will serve as the embassy’s first secretary in the influential Muslim nation. However, talks were described as “positive and productive” by union chiefs.

NAZI SALUTE MAN HELD BY POLICE Police detained a 26-year-old man for a racially-aggravated public order offence, after he abused passers-by and did a Nazi salute in Golders Green. Neighbourhood watch group Shomrim N.W. followed the man after he performed the offensive gesture, before police arrested him. A Community Security Trust spokesperson said: “We are pleased the offender was arrested and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the police.”

Jones attacks Netanyahu Oxford plan praised and anti-Semitism on left Guardian columnist Owen Jones used the first Henry Smith Memorial Lecture to condemn anti-Semitism on the left and denounce Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. In conversation with Sarah Sackman, vicechair of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) at Belsize Square Synagogue, Jones described what had happened with Ken Livingstone as “a tragedy” for the Labour Party. Livingstone’s remarks about Hitler and Zionism were “totally unacceptable”, he said, adding it was critical non-Jews on the left “stand in solidarity” against such attitudes. The event, commemorating the long and distinguished contribution to Labour politics by the late Henry Smith, was a real case of “Alias Smith and Jones’, as Jones has been a close friend for many years of Smith’s son, Stef, and in his opening remarks spoke of how the relationship had enabled him to learn about Jewish people and the Holocaust. The major thread running through his comments was the condemnation of antiSemitism and great regret that Jews should not feel comfortable within the Labour Party. “It’s vital that the Jewish contribution to Labour should always be recognised”, he said. “Without Jews the Labour Party would not exist”. Jones famously received so much abuse on social media for agreeing to take part in Sunday’s event he temporarily left Twitter. He

complained its users “read about Jews and their life experience [of anti-Semitism] and use it as an opportunity to condemn Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians.” Those on the left should listen, “take anti-Semitism seriously, and don’t treat it as part of a right-wing conspiracy”. Jones, who has not yet visited Israel, did not pull his punches on the current Israeli government. Describing himself as a passionate supporter of Palestinian self-determination, he described Netanyahu’s administration as “hardright, bigoted, violating international law and making peace impossible”. He added he wanted a two-state solution in which both Jews and Palestinians could feel safe, something that was possible only through dialogue and not a military solution.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has praised Jewish philanthropists who have helped Oxford University to expand a prestigious scholarship programme to include Israelis for the first time. At a meeting at Rivlin’s Jerusalem residence, two Israeli students who will be studying at Oxford met Canadians Larry and Judy Tanenbaum, whose funding for the 113-year old Rhodes Trust made it possible. Rivlin said he hoped Maayan Roichman and Nadav Lidor would be the first of

many Rhodes Scholars, as the programme’s expansion now allows Israel to be considered as a candidate country. The expansion takes the number of annual scholarships from 83 to 95, and includes candidates from Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories.

MID EAST TALKS IN LONDON Israeli and Palestinian officials held off-the-radar talks in London last year which facilitators said “broke new ground” in an attempt to restart peace negotiations. The private meeting, involving government representatives, academics and security figures from both Israel and the Palestinian Authority, was hosted by two London-based think-tanks,

Chatham House and BICOM. Those involved said there was widespread agreement that bilateral negotiations now represented a “tired” old model, and there was a willingness to work towards a “hybrid model,” perhaps involving Arab states. “These talks were constructive and serious,” said BICOM chief executive James Sorene. “We broke new ground with some clear proposals.”

A Kenton grandmother who called on the Jewish community to help find an urgent stem cell donor had a transplant this week – from her daughter. Sipy Howard (pictured, right), who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) on her birthday in December, is hoping the stem cell transplant from her daughter Jolene will work, after no match was found from the family’s donor registration drive. In a short statement on Facebook on Tuesday, the family said: “Big day today! Sipy is getting her stem cell transplant… We are hopeful that this procedure will work. Thank you for everyone’s well wishes. We are all very grateful.”

AML is an aggressive blood cancer, the same suffered by fellow Kenton grandmother Sharon Berger, whose family created the phenomenally successful Spit4Mum campaign in 2012. For most people, birthdays come with goodwill messages, perhaps a dozen or so from friends and family. If it’s a special birthday, they may get more. But few will beat last week’s haul by East Ender Millie Finger. As she turned 100, she woke up to more than 1,500 messages of love from around the world. Many were from complete strangers. “It is marvellous what everyone has done for me,” said Milly, who lives in a council flat above Watney Market. “I love you all. Thank you.” Milly’s daughter passed away several years ago, and her only remaining family – a niece and nephew – do not live nearby, so she has been embraced by the Jewish Care team, whose staff and volunteers threw her a party to remember

The centenarian has been a staunch supporter of the charity’s work, recalling her story last year in a fundraising film story, which charity bosses said “touched the hearts of many members of the community”. Gallery sells work by Shoah hate artist The Saatchi Art online gallery has been asked to stop selling paintings by French artist Thomas Losfeld, who participated in the Iran Holocaust Cartoon Contest in 2015. Jewish News readers expressed concern this week that the website – which is based in Los Angeles and not affiliated in any way to the Saatchi Gallery in London – was stocking the artist’s drawings despite serious concerns about his past activities. One of Losfeld’s previous pieces shows the guard tower at AuschwitzBirkenau set within a snow globe, with dollar bills falling instead of snow. Another depicts Robert Faurisson, a Franco-British Holocaust denier, wearing blue and white striped clothing and a yellow star. Boris urges settlement rethink Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has strongly criticised Israel’s decision to establish a new settlement deep inside the West Bank, expropriate additional territory as ‘state land’ and build another 2,000 units in existing settlements. Johnson, who was joined in anger by other leading European politicians, said the Israeli plans were being made “in spite of significant international concern” and asked the Israeli authorities not to go ahead. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin after 14 people were killed in a bombing attack on a St Petersburg subway. “On behalf of the Government of Israel, I send condolences to President Putin and to the families of those who were murdered following today’s bombing on the S. Petersburg subway,” Netanyahu wrote in a statement on Monday, hours after the afternoon blast, which also injured dozens more. “The citizens of Israel stand alongside the Russian

people at this difficult time.” The home-made bomb filled with shrapnel detonated in a moving subway car after Putin had arrived in his hometown for a visit. A much more powerful bomb was discovered later disguised as a fire extinguisher at a nearby train station and was successfully defused. The attack shut down the entire subway system in St Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city. Russian state investigators named the prime suspect as Akbarzhon Jalilov, 22, who was born in Kyrgyzstan. Campus survey reveals student fears A report examining the experience of Jewish students on campus says almost half do not feel comfortable voicing their views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in class, but that most do not worry about hate crime. Published on Monday, the report is the culmination of five months’ research, and is described as a “first-of-itskind study” by the National Union of Students (NUS) to help make university life more “inclusive and welcoming” to Jewish students. Researchers found that while 73 percent of Jewish

Other concerns expressed by respondents included lack of access to kosher food on campus (42 percent) and the timetabling of exams and activities over Shabbat and Jewish festivals (59 percent). The UK is home to 8,500 Jewish students, a quarter of whom study in London, and concerns have been growing in recent years that the politically-charged nature of the Middle East debate in British campuses was creating a hostile environment. The NUS must work to rebuild trust with Jewish students and, along with students’ unions and higher education institutions, aim to fully understand Jewish students’ needs”. A spokesperson for Jewdents, a Jewish student group which support boycotts of Israel, said: “It is hugely significant that 1 in 4 Jewish students are comfortable or very comfortable with BDS. We expect an even higher proportion would support a settlement boycott. “Many students are unable to practice progressive Judaism within JSocs or to be openly critical of Israel, and UJS has done nothing to tackle this.”

I’ve led the joint report by the National Union of Students (NUS) and Union of Jewish Students on the experiences of Jewish students on campus. It is a response to increasing anti-Semitism across the UK: The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors anti-Semitism in the UK, recorded 1,309 anti-Semitic incidents in 2016, the highest total it has ever recorded. The report is also a response to Jewish students who are increasingly telling us that they feel uncomfortable engaging not only with student politics and NUS, but also with their students’ unions and university communities. Higher education should be here for all students and we need to make sure that all students can engage with us without feeling discriminated against. I want Jewish students to know that we are

committed to ensuring that this includes them. How do we achieve this? It is not to shut down debate around Israel/Palestine. Universities, as we are often reminded, should be places where free and open debate is encouraged. If students feel passionately about a political issue, then they should be supported to discuss it. Of course, many Jewish students also hold strong, often deeply personal, views on the Israel/Palestine debate and would like to be given a chance to discuss these. The problem, as we have seen in this report, is that they feel that they cannot engage in this particular debate without being subjected to anti-Semitic language and views. This has to change, and it can only change if we listen to the experiences of Jewish students. Only when discrimination and racism in all forms is eradicated can we have truly free debate. Only when Jewish students feel able to engage with every single aspect of student life without fear of prejudice will anti-Semitism no longer be an urgent problem for our movement.

SIR HOWARD BERNSTEIN NAMED JLC VICE-CHAIR The former chief executive of Manchester City Council credited with regenerating Britain’s second city is to become a vice-president of the Jewish Leadership Council. Sir Howard Bernstein, who rose to head the council after

joining as a clerk, championed the city’s innovative tram system and oversaw the city centre’s reconstruction after a massive IRA bomb in 1996. “Sir Howard is the outstanding local government leader of his generation,” said JLC chief executive Simon

Johnson. “His unparalleled experience will be of huge value to our community and we look forward to working with him.” Bernstein is acknowledged to have inspired investment and growth and reformed the council’s public sector work, including its healthcare provision, for which he was subsequently listed as one of the most influential people in the NHS.

‘Hatzola’s heroes saved my life’ A Jewish doctor living in Hampstead Garden Suburb has thanked the Hatzola emergency service for saving her life after she suffered an ectopic pregnancy but was told an ambulance would not be sent. The 35-year-old GP, who does not wish to be named, suffered “severe abdominal pain” while six weeks pregnant. She called her sister-in-law, who came round and called 999. The doctor said the ambulance service advised her to wait two hours to see if it got worse and to call 111, but the pair, now joined by the woman’s mother, decided to make their way to hospital. As they tried to walk down the stairs, the woman collapsed. “We reassessed, and my mum remembered she had Hatzola’s number on her phone. They were there in five minutes, put me on a stretcher and used the blue light to get me to the Royal Free fast.” The doctor was rushed into emergency surgery and it was found she had suffered major

internal bleeding. She said: “I had to have six units of blood and a life-saving operation.” The woman was at home recovering this week. Without Hatzola’s “speed and professionalism” she added: “I would have died at home.” In such circumstances, she warned: “If you can’t get to hospital, and no one can get you there, what do you do? It’s important we keep this amazing service in our community, because without it you’re just left”. She said as a GP she is well

And that demand is going to get bigger because of the crisis in the NHS. Celebrity snapper turns lens on survivors Harry Borden is Britain’s Annie Leibovitz. Sort of. The American-born, UKraised portrait photographer, 52, admits there “are some parallels” in their careers, although “obviously, I’m nowhere near as successful”. Still, Borden is the UK’s go-to photographer when a publication wants a celebrity portrait. Elton John, Paul McCartney, Ewan McGregor and, perhaps most famously, Margaret Thatcher, have been among his subjects. His work has appeared on the covers of Vogue, GQ and The New Yorker, among many others, and he has more than 100 works in the National Portrait Gallery. Around nine years ago, however, he felt there was more to life than taking pictures of the rich and famous. At what he considered “the height of my powers,” he decided to “use my photography for something more useful”. And there began a journey that took him as far as Israel, Australia and back to the US to

take photos of 200 Holocaust survivors. Of these, 104 are collected in his new book, Survivor: A Portrait of the Survivors of the Holocaust. The project was a personal one. Borden was born in New York but moved to England as an infant — first to London, then to rural Devon — where he attended church schools and sang in a church choir. He considered himself Christian, like his mother, Lillian. Borden said his father, Charlie — an advertising execu-

tive and a non-practicing Jew — told him that the only thing he derived from his Jewish background was a fear of antiSemitism. Still, from his paternal grandmother — who often spoke about her life as a Jew in her native Romania — Borden had a sense of his Jewish heritage. He also remained haunted by something his father once told him: “The Nazis would have killed us.” Reflecting on those conversations with his grandmother

— as well as his father’s comment, combined with ambivalence towards Judaism — is what motivated him to take portraits of survivors, he said. “It was part of an exploration of my identity,” he said. “In rural Devon, there were no Jewish people.” He took his last photos in 2010, and gradually, Survivor morphed from an online project into a hefty 276-page book. The images are elegant in their simplicity, and each image is accompanied by a

handwritten note (and, at the book’s end, a biography of each survivor). “I wanted the portraits to be an authentic record of the relationship I had with my subject on the day,” he said. Asked if he had favourite photographs in the book, Borden said: “Felix Fibich made me laugh, cry and helped create one of my favourite images. “Being a choreographer, he asked if he could express himself through dance. Three people were stabbed in the Old City of Jerusalem by a Palestinian teenager, who was shot and killed at the scene. The attack in the Muslim Quarter on Saturday was the second Palestinian stabbing incident in the Old City in the same week. The teen, identified by the Palestinian Ministry of Health as Ahmad Zahir Fathi Ghazal, 17, from Nablus in the northern West Bank, stabbed two civilians aged 18 and 20, before trying to hide in an apartment building. He stabbed a Border Police officer during the struggle to

arrest him and he was shot and killed by another officer, according to Israeli police. Last week Siham Ratib Nimr, 49, was killed as she tried to stab Israeli Border Police officers outside the Damascus gate in Jerusalem. She was the mother of Mustafa Nimer, who was shot dead by Border Police last year outside the Shuafat refugee camp.

WALLENBERG NOTE SELLS FOR £10,000 A document signed by Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg that saved a Jewish woman from the Nazis sold at auction for more than £10,000. On September 22, 1944, an affidavit signed by Wallenberg in Nazi-occupied Budapest saved the life of Zsigmondne Simko, a Hungarian Jewish woman, by declaring that she was under the protection of the Swedish government. The document was purchased for around £10,000 through the Nate D. Sanders auction house in Los Angeles. In keeping with company policy, Sanders did not divulge the identity of the buyer.

RABBIS RULE ON PIZZA DISPUTE The owner of a kosher pizzeria in New York has successfully sued the owner of a rival kosher pizzeria by invoking an ancient Talmudic law. Daniel Branover, whose upmarket Basil Pizza & Wine Bar has diners queuing for up to two hours, took exception to newcomer Calabria, opened by Shemi Harel across the street, and took the matter to the Beth Din (or Rabbinical Court) of the Borough Park neighbourhood in Brooklyn. In a case that has intrigued intellectual property lawyers around the world, Branover sued on the grounds of ‘hasagat gevul,’ which translates as ‘trespassing’ or ‘unfair competi-

tion’ depending upon the circumstances. Branover alleged that Harel set up shop in order to entice diners queuing for seats, and that Basil’s employees were approached for information, arguing that this went beyond legitimate competition. The Rabbinical Court said it considered the proximity of the two restaurants, Branover’s investment and reputation, and the “similarities in the appearance and concept” of the two restaurants. However, they also considered the ability of the two men to make a living as an important for any claim based on ‘hasagat gevul’.

Despite the leniency of his sentence, Ken Livingstone was found guilty of all three charges of a breach of rules by the party’s disciplinary panel, the National Constitutional Committee. It took three days to decide his words were “grossly detrimental”, giving him time to double down, informing reporters outside his hearing that the Nazis also sold guns to Zionists... “So you had up until the start of the war real collaboration.” He might as well have insisted Eva Braun kept kosher, Heinrich Himmler had a barmitzvah and Josef Goebbels was a huge klezmer fan. Livingstone arguably indulges in the dark arts of disgraced Holocaust denier David Irving, wilfully misconstruing history to suit his agenda. To suggest the bastard who murdered six million Jews supported a Jewish homeland is like saying the 9/11 terrorists supported the redevelopment of lower Manhattan. In both cases the only intention, from start to finish, was death and destruction. To peddle any other analysis is to lie. Hitler didn’t support Zionists any more than he supported gypsies, gay rights or step-free wheelchair access. He was, however, a big fan of sterilisation, slave labour and slaughter for all these causes. Livingstone’s idiosyncratic philosophy is old anti-Semitic wine in new bottles. It’s intellectual anti-Semitism masquerading as anti-Zionism. Any fool can deny Hitler’s crimes. It takes a real piece of work to use them against the Jews all over again. Jeremy Corbyn can mouth off all he wants about “setting the gold standard for anti-racism”. His party can undertake as many Chakrabarti reports as it wants. But granting members – even the leader’s ideological allies – immunity from moral accountability has now turned the acceptable level of debate on Israel in the Labour Party toxic and broken Labour’s relationship with British Jews beyond repair.

Why do people refer to the offenders as ‘Orthodox’? Most dictionary definitions of ‘orthodox’ are along the lines of “following the traditional or generally-accepted rules or beliefs of a religion”. Where in our religion is it generally accepted to be rude? The Kedoshim commandment is to ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ and Hillel said: ‘What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah.’

Further to your story about pork being placed next to kosher food at Morrisons [Jewish News, 9 March], I noticed in the section for kosher and halal produce in the Asda hypermarket in north Watford an inappropriate illustration above the shelves [see below]. Charedim not always as pure as driven snow I read Geoffrey Niman’s letter with a sense of incredulity [Jewish News, 9 March]. He implied Charedi people are as pure as can be and righteously uphold the words of the Torah. I’m sure most do but many despicable issues have arisen involving Charedi men’s behaviour towards women and children. Some who deserved to be prosecuted were hidden away among their communities in a shameful way. His comments about ‘promiscuous intermingling of the sexes that sadly is

I wonder what is the basis for this assertion, particularly as I’ve always understood that Israel’s courts are free and independent, and not under political control. The operating of Israel’s court is something to be proud of, particularly when it has had to mete out justice to individuals such as terrorists charged with committing heinous crimes against its people. The fact that, in general, it has managed to achieve this fairly while under intense provocation is one of the reasons why most fair-minded people consider Israel to be a beacon of freedom and democracy in the Middle East.

DAD HAD EXEMPLARY CARE Our father recently passed away in Jewish Care’s Rubens House, aged 101. The wonderful attention he received from carers and management staff was exemplary. Without these carers, who came from different countries, his last few months would not have been as meaningful and fulfilling as it was. It was amazing how

Bad parents? Chances are they may well be Zionists JENNI FRAZER

First: “An assailant drove into a crowd of people and killed three, including a police officer, before being shot and killed by security forces.” Second: “An assailant stabbed two young men and a police officer on Saturday afternoon, wounding them, before being shot and killed by security forces, police said.” The first, as we must all be aware by now, refers to the event on Westminster Bridge in central London. Despite warnings from anti-terrorist authorities to expect attacks, it was rare enough to make us all — at least temporarily — familiar with the names of the assailant, Khalid Masood, and of his victims, PC Keith Palmer, Aysha Frade, Kurt Cochran and Len Rhodes. The second event took place in Jerusalem’s Old City, and was the second attack in a week: before it happened, Israeli border police shot and killed a woman as she attempted to stab them with scissors outside

Damascus Gate. The woman was later identified as Siham Rateb Nimir, 49, from East Jerusalem but I had to scour reports to find the name of the Saturday stabber, so commonplace have these attacks become: he was a teenager of just 17, Ahmed Jazal. I thought about these two horrible incidents and the public’s general responses to them as I was reading reports of the navelgazing hate-fest that was taking place in Cork over last weekend. I think — and I hope I am right — that most people will have been relieved that Masood was shot dead by British police, before he could cause any further carnage. That is the policy adopted by Israeli security forces and Israelis, on the whole, approve of such a policy. It is a difficult and fine line to get right, a hair-trigger (literally) judgment call, and the other thing which I ought to say is that all we armchair opinion-formers should be mightily glad that we are never called upon to make such a decision. In Cork, meanwhile, a group of academics

(academics!) have been airing their beliefs that Israelis treat Palestinians like “untermenschen”, a term used by Exeter University’s Dr Ghada Kharmi. She spent much of her childhood, it should be recalled, in Golders Green, and is thus in a position to know better about the use of such language. Elsewhere at the Cork conference — called in order to discuss the international legitimacy of Israel — a member of the audience claimed that Zionists routinely withdrew love and affection from their children in order to turn them into killers. That is something that might draw gasps from normal people, but which appeared to concern very few of the participants.

The only person foolhardy enough to continue participation in Cork was Jewish academic Professor Geoffrey Alderman, who tells me he was received to “spontaneous applause” and had had an email from a delegate “saying that I have partially changed his mind on Israel/Palestine”. Even if this were the case, I cannot but believe that Professor Alderman’s presence did anything but lend a spurious air of legitimacy to the conference. It will have made the haters happy and the rest of us just outright bemused. In such a climate, it is difficult to know how to proceed. As I say, compare and contrast.

You’ll be dazzled by the dynamism of our youth SIMON JOHNSON CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JLC

often hear from current heads of communal organisations about their concerns on where the next generation of Jewish leaders might be found. Well, reading the Jewish News projects Eighteen Under 18 and Thirty Under 30, which we at the Jewish Leadership Council have been proud to support, should give us all confidence there are a large number of bright, young, talented and engaged leaders making their mark on our community. You will first see the leaders identified in the Eighteen Under 18 category. Nobody should be surprised at the depth of talent that we have identified there. Those of us who are alumni of peer-led youth organisations like BBYO will know how much we were able to achieve in our teenage years. As a chapter president and national executive member of BBYO, I was chairing meetings, organising conventions,

handling finances and speaking publicly. These skills I developed have sustained me throughout my career. In my business life, my employers were spending thousands of pounds on professional trainers to provide my colleagues with things I had developed and learned how to do for free in my youth movement. The 18s list is full of young people using their initiative, enthusiasm and passion for the benefit of the community. They are working in established organisations, in innovative programmes, in schools, shuls and youth movements. Their stories provide a breath of fresh air. They have instilled in me an excitement about what they might achieve. It will be fascinating to follow their careers and see if they indeed fulfil the huge future leadership potential that the judges identified. You will enjoy meeting them and hearing of their achievements. There are a number of interesting stories to watch out for as Jewish News counts down the Thirty Under 30. I was a judge

on the Twenty-Five Under 25 project two years ago and it will be interesting to see who from that list is still making a mark on the community and how. The advantage of Jewish News running these programmes periodically is that it allows us to see the development of our brightest young leaders and the impact they are making. There are a number of leaders who are new to the list who have burst into the community over the past couple of years and made their presence felt. This shows the dynamism of our youth and demonstrates there is still a willingness on the part of bright and talented young people to put their skills at the disposal

of the community. It counters the gloomy predictions I have been hearing that there are insufficient leaders coming through. What this list tells us is that the challenge to our communal organisations is how to take advantage of this talent and keep them involved. It would be criminal if any of these leaders were not able to be involved because there was no room for them in communal organisations. It should provide an incentive to us all to look at how we can refresh our leadership structures to ensure that the brightest talent is always welcome. What will be clear over the coming weeks is that the future of our community leadership is bright.

Coming from the most prominent Muslim parliamentarian, this will make Islamic jihadists sniff blood. It will encourage UK Muslims to join terror groups and embolden IS. Repeating the lie that Israel committed war crimes in Gaza validates Hamas’ human shield strategy and encourages further violence and killing. She has blood on her hands. Her arguments are absurd. She obviously doesn’t care about the so-called loophole she demands is closed: allowing British citizens to join a foreign army. If she did, she would apply the same in

Israeli intelligence has saved many British lives on the battlefields of Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, here at home and abroad. Israeli drone, counter-IED and battlefield medical technology have made our forces more effective and kept British soldiers alive and fighting. Israel’s staunch military backing to Egypt and Jordan has held IS at bay and prevented an even worse immigration flow into Europe.

Will our young people who join the IDF cut off their victims’ heads, burn them in cages, bury them up to their necks and leave them to die, line them up and shoot them in the back of the head, systematically destroy their cultural heritage, rape their women and children, torture their prisoners and beat and abuse their elders, as IS do? I won’t even answer that. The IDF complies with the Geneva Conventions and with Jewish morality handed down across the centuries. In its efforts to avoid civilian casualties in battle, the IDF is admired and emulated by armies throughout the world. I have seen many young British IDF soldiers in action. I hugely admire their dedication, humanity, professionalism, courage and fighting spirit. I abhor and reject the contemptible accusations of Sayeeda Warsi. Unlike these brave Jewish men and women, she has never put herself in harm’s way for her country, has no understanding of the depredations of our bestial IS enemies or the righteousness of our friends and allies of the IDF.

utter exasperation. I believe that the simple message that antiSemitism is always unacceptable in the Labour Party should have been made clearer from the outset of this debacle. It is regrettable that we have had to undertake 12 months of bureaucratic gymnastics in order to see the kind of condemnations that have been forthcoming today. How many inquiries, how many disciplinary committees need to be convened to reach a conclusion that most see as a matter of common decency and common sense? I have been inundated with messages from local residents with whom I grew up, with whom I went to school, and with whom I have remained close. They are appalled, not just by Ken Livingstone’s gratuitously offensive comments, but by the lack of decisiveness and the apparent equivocation with which they are also handled. They have told me they are at their wits’ end with the party and, sadly, many have felt

compelled to resign. My anger that they have been bounced into such a situation knows no bounds. Neither does my determination to right the insufferable wrong of the past 24 hours. Last week, I wrote to many Jewish constituents ahead of Passover – that great festival of emancipation. I gave them my reassurances that I would confront all forms of anti-Semitism, violent and non-violent, and that I would undertake whatever actions I could to improve relations with the community. The Jewish community contributes profoundly to this country and deserves a political environment free from discrimination

and hurtful distortions of their past. Labour should be seeking the gold standard in an approach to anti-racism, rather than scrambling to find a safe distance from those who claim to share our values, but whose actions say otherwise. This has been an embarrassing episode in an historic relationship that is too important for us to abandon. I would encourage all those reading this to support groups such as the Jewish Labour Movement and to continue making representations to your elected representatives. Only by repeatedly challenging antiSemitic language and behaviour will we triumph in ridding our politics of this age-old evil.

LEARNING THE SKILLS FOR LIFE Deborah Cicurel finds out how Kisharon is helping people aged 16 to 25 with learning disabilities to access further education

isharon is one of London’s best-known Jewish charities. It’s valuable, cherished and important, providing the community with vital support for hundreds of people with learning disabilities, as well as their families. The services are located over several London sites and cater for the needs of people with learning disabilities throughout their lives – from nursery and school for children, through to supported living services, college, day services and work opportunities for older people. But did you know the charity also offers further education for people with learning disabilities? The programme, in partnership with Hackney Community College, is aimed at helping people aged 16 to 25 with learning disabilities to access further education in a culturally appropriate environment they feel comfortable with. “Kisharon provides support for each individual to develop their potential and live a fulfilling life within the community,” says Aviva Braunold, manager of Day Support, Education and Therapies at Kisharon. “This is an excellent partnership between Kisharon and Hackney

KISHARON AND HCC GIVE PEOPLE THE CONFIDENCE AND SKILLS FOR A MORE INDEPENDENT LIFE Community College that provides opportunities for the development of personal skills and further independence for people in the community who wish to access further education within a culture they are familiar with. “Jewish input is incorporated into sessions: for example, we have blessings, prayers and lunchtime learning options for men and women, and independent living skills comply with all aspects of a kosher home,” she adds. “The partnership ensures that all staff receive an extensive induction, which includes information on all Jewish festivals and religious and cultural practices. “Programmes are based around suitable activities which are in keeping with the Jewish way of life.”

HCC@Kisharon, as it is called, opened in September 2014 and is based in Hackney’s Brenner centre. The courses offered on the programme comprise a variety of educational areas, including numeracy and literacy, basic skills, independent living, social skills and work experience opportunities within both the local and wider community. “These courses allow the individual to grow and develop in independence from adolescence to adulthood,” says Braunold. “They teach people to develop confidence, increase knowledge of basic skills and life skills and live a more independent life.” The courses are structured towards students learning to be independent, with suitable support provided for their needs. “Students work in small groups with specialist support tailored to meet their needs, which gradually reduce as they learn to do more things for themselves,” adds Braunold. “The course is person-centred and determined by individual need and choice, building on existing skills and pointing students to where they want to be at the end of the course. “Students will develop communication, English and maths skills relevant to everyday life embedded in all areas of the course. “There will also be opportunities to develop skills to use technology and explore how the digital world can increase independence.” The courses are tailored to the cultural, religious and educational needs of each individual student. They’re not just about learning, but about real life experience: work experience opportunities in the third year and support from Kisharon’s employment manager allow the

learning to become a real life experience for students to develop beyond their years at the college. Braunold says there have been a number of success stories that have evolved from Kisharon’s partnership with the college. “One parent gave great feedback, paying tribute to the staff working with her son,” she says. “He entered the provision extremely shy and quiet, and felt unable to participate in daily tasks that other people his age could do easily. “She explained that through the care, support and attention to detail, and the person-centred programme that he has received at HCC @ Kisharon, he is now a confident young man who prides himself in being able to access two jobs. “He engages well within the community and he is comfortable that his Jewish culture has not been compromised during his educational experiences.” Braunold says other people have been enormously helped by the structure afforded by the course. “Another parent commented that her son’s behavior significantly improved since attending the HCC @ Kisharon provision, due to the structured timetable and detailed learning plan he accesses each wday to become more independent,” she says. “He is now able to plan a menu, cook meals in the kitchen, set the table and wash up, which have all helped towards his independent living for the future.” Find out more at the HCC@Kisharon Open Day on Wednesday, 26 April, 10am to 1pm at Brenner Centre, Stamford Hill, N16 5TP. The company’s turnover was £11m, but it has now more than doubled to £26m. The net profits also doubled to £2m in this period. As well as his belief in his field, the Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue member says the other key to success is tenacity. Goral uses his 23 years of experience

working with small and medium-sized enterprises and the ActionCOACH six steps system tested on more than 100,000 businesses. It is his passion to ensure clients keep to the plan. And, he says, it works. First off, results are guaranteed. If, after a year of coaching, the gross profit growth does not cover the fees, Goral will refund the difference (as long as the business owner has met all its commitments on the agreed growth plan). Profiles by Noa Lessof Gendler AMITAI LANDAU-POPE, AGED 18 As head boy of JFS, Amitai has demonstrated an exceptional standard in his leadership style and sense of responsibility, remaining calm and humble at all times while maintaining respect and authority among his peers. He has worked as the school’s AJEX (Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women) coordinator and organised the school’s largest turnout at the AJEX parade. He also represented the Jewish community, alongside the Chief Rabbi, at the Naz Foundation’s interfaith Iftar at Lambeth Palace. Amitai is a promotor of mental health awareness, a madrich at RSY and a youth leader at Finchley Reform Synagogue. Last year, he was chosen to be a member of the Young People’s Script Panel at the Royal Court Theatre. Now he is writing and directing a verbatim play about the life of Eleanor Rathbone for an event at JFS for the Eleanor Rathbone Charitable Trust. His many talents and interests serve the community around him.

AVI DUBINER, AGED 16, & MICHAL MORGENSTERN, AGED 17 Avi and Michal work tirelessly on GIFT’s Shabbat Walk project, coordinating Shabbat afternoon visits by teenagers to care homes, hospitals and those who are lonely or in need of extra support. They work with Jewish Care, Norwood, KEF, Kisharon and Camp Simcha to provide care and comfort to vulnerable people in the community. During the week, Michal and Avi arrange for volunteers to visit families with financial difficulties or children with special needs. The pair organise food packing by volunteers twice a month, conduct training sessions for the hundreds of volunteers and are continually exploring new initiatives to keep the Shabbat Walk expanding and affecting change. Not only do they dedicate hours to the organisation of the project, they also walk miles every Shabbat to take part themselves. They deserve credit for their incredible commitment and positive influence in the community.

NATHAN BORODA, AGED 17

DAWN BENNETT, AGED 17 Since her batmitzvah, Dawn has engaged with social action in a productive way. She founded the charity Evolve in 2012 with the intention of helping former Soviet communities to develop and recover from their 20th century history. Since its beginnings, Evolve has worked to provide resources for the Jewish wing of the Minsk State Kindergarten, set up a new kindergarten in Ukraine, and has raised money for orphanages in Eastern Europe to buy washing machines and tumble dryers. The charity’s biggest project is an annual summer camp in Ukraine, which Dawn organises and runs for 80 Jewish and non-Jewish children. The camp aims to support them through traumas brought about by the dramatic political situation. Dawn’s strong belief in the importance of community also makes her a generous and active chair for the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls’ Jewish Society and a committed madricha (youth leader) at Camp Simcha.

DANIA MANN-WINEBERG, AGED 17 Mancunian Dania is involved in everything, volunteering for soup kitchens, attending Shabbat services at the Heathlands Village care home, and spending time with children with special needs, painting and gardening with them to improve their coordination and allow their parents some rest. She is a committee member at Friendship Circle, a Jewish charity aiming to provide fun and integrating activities to people with special needs. She runs her shul’s children’s service and mother and toddler group. Dania also takes part in interfaith events linking her school, Yavneh, where she is head girl, with Manchester Islamic High School for Girls and the nearby Catholic school St Monica’s. She is also a talented musician, and plays the violin for residents of Newlands care home. She also plays with Mifal Hatruma Ladies Band, which raises money for disadvantaged Israeli teenagers.

HARRY MARKHAM, AGED 17 The energy and attention that Nathan has dedicated to the Jewish Labour Movement has significantly contributed to its recent revival in Manchester. He has become an ambassador for the Jewish community there, representing its needs to non-Jewish audiences and educating non-Jewish MPs in the Labour Party. At a time when left-wing anti-Semitism is being widely discussed, Nathan’s involvement has been an asset, both in Manchester and across the wider community. During the Ivan Lewis mayoral campaign, he displayed a mature political understanding. Those who work with him recognise his shrewd, calm leadership, and his articulate confidence. His socialist and Zionist values are deeply rooted in his Judaism and it is this focused, ambitious drive that is so apparent in both his Jewish and secular activities.

King Solomon sixth-former Harry is a proud and dedicated Zionist, showing courage and determination when speaking about his values to both friendly and hostile audiences. He founded Essex Friends of Israel and Zionist Future, which work to inspire and motivate young people to engage with and recognise the importance of Israel. He has been crucial in securing high-profile speakers for both groups and has been in contact with previous and sitting MPs in his constituency. His work promotes the welfare of the community and educates many about Zionism. Continuously organising Israeli advocacy events and pro-Israel rallies, Harry aims to share the values that are manifested in the Jewish state and spread a positive Zionist message. Harry’s energy, passion and dedication is contributing to a vibrant Zionist generation.

More recently, his work has been displayed on the cover of The Hospital Club’s Art Guide, on the London underground and the official UJIA Israel Tour 2016 T-shirt. His solo exhibition in Covent Garden was a sell-out event. But Zoom also uses his talent for social justice, designing artwork for the refugee campaign #LetTheChildrenIn, and a Shana Tova card sold in aid of the Congregation of Jacob in Whitechapel. Keen to share his skills, he offers free cartooning workshops to schools in disadvantaged areas and has even spoken in the House of Commons on the importance of innovation and creativity.

JESS BAKER, AGED 17

Jake and Zach are entrepreneurial young inventors who crowdfunded a product known as the MakeTronix alarm, an educational tool designed to teach young people about technology and programming. The product is a DIY kit making use of the versatile mini-computer Raspberry Pi, and lessons provided on the MakeTronix website give instructions encouraging users to “get learning, hacking and programming”. The boys also deserve recognition for their desire to spread knowledge, which observers say will have a transformative effect. Kantor King Solomon High School, where Zach is a student, has expressed interest in investing, and Ilford MP Wes Streeting has praised the pair’s dedication to teaching computer science. He also acknowledged the Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade’s role in bringing the boys together on Israel Tour. At JLGB, the boys are also appreciated for their leadership skills, always quietly willing to lend assistance and continuously showing their dedication to educating young people.

GEORGE ROSENFELD, AGED 17 Jess, an LJY-Netzer madricha and Birmingham Progressive Synagogue cheder teacher, is outstanding in her commitment to social action. Described as ‘fiercely ideological’, she has worked with Citizens UK for four years and has twice been voted the organisation’s Young Leader of the Year. Her community work extends to campaigning for Birmingham City Council to improve its mental health services and to accept 50 Syrian refugees into the city. She has organised a number of fundraising sleep-outs for homeless youths, is setting up a Birmingham youth council, and is vocal in encouraging young people to vote. Her dedication to LJY and her stellar leadership qualities have resulted in a significant increase in LJY participants from the Birmingham area. She has continued with an astonishing amount of extracurricular activities during her A-Levels, and, to top it off, it has been said that when there is one person alone in the group, it’s Jess who will make that person feel welcome.

DORA HIRSH, AGED 16

George has the voice of an angel, and he uses it, along with vocal contributions from a group of his friends, to raise money for charities with which the boys have connections through sales of their CDs. The group, known as the Four Sons, have raised more than £35,000 for WaterAid, and George travelled to Zambia to meet the people who are benefiting from the project, and to learn how the donations are being used. He kept a moving diary of the trip, which demonstrates his sensitive understanding of his own privilege and a strong sense of social justice. He writes on his website: “I hope that through selling these CDs, we will be able to raise a great amount of money, because if we do, we could be saving thousands of lives. If that’s not a good enough substitute for Fifa 13, what is?” The Four Sons also support Chai Cancer Care and Emunah with their beautiful and popular renditions of the best-known Hebrew psalms and prayers.

ABI BRUNNER, AGED 17 Dora is a young woman whose love of Judaism has resulted in her being the youngest person to date to participate in the Liberal movement’s Ba’alei Tefilah programme. She has also been accepted to study at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem, despite being two years below the age limit. A true shaliach tzibur (prayer leader), she creates an inclusive atmosphere during services at Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, and has been praised for understanding and enhancing the mood of the community. She combines her love of Judaism with her talent for teaching, resulting in her Year 2 Hebrew class having a proficiency in Hebrew that rivals that of pupils in Year 6. Dora says she recognises the importance of action as well as text in Judaism, a belief that has seen her volunteering at food banks and for refugee projects as well as mentoring students at JCoSS with special needs. She is recognised as a great leader and is on her way to becoming a great rabbi in the future.

Sweet, energetic, a great tefillah (prayer) leader and a leader amongst her peers, Abi stands out as a shining example of good hadracha (guidance) and commitment to tikkun olam. She contributes tirelessly to the Together Plan, a charity set up by her mother, which supports young Jews ex-Soviet countries particularly in Belarus and Poland. She volunteers on trips and has been working as a madricha there prior to being a madricha at her own youth movement, RSY. Her performance of the RSY hadracha course reflects her commitment to strong leadership, teamwork and Jewish education. She is working on another project, compiling a book of creative responses about mental health difficulties by teenagers with first-hand experiences. The book will aim to show a range of struggles and reactions, working outside of official systems and filters to create an inclusive, genuine account for young readers seeking support.

SHERA CONWAY, AGED 17 Jessica’s contribution to the learning resource known as Treehouse at No 9 has been transformative for the programme, helping it to expand and develop. Co-founder Karen describes her as the ‘power pack’, unendingly sharing her creative drive. A platform that tells the stories of children whose disabilities become their superpowers, Treehouse aims to provide children with positive disabled role models, which supporters feel are often sorely missed in mainstream children’s writing. Jessica has created her own character, Pip, as well as helping to develop the character Freddie for Downs Syndrome Awareness Day. She has never allowed her own genetic condition to be a barrier to her social action, despite the regular surgery she needs. Jessica astonishes her teachers and other volunteers at Treehouse with her energy and enthusiasm. She is an exceptional ambassador for Treehouse and does credit to the community in her work to raise awareness about disabilities.

ADAM FELDMAN, AGED 17

Shera is JLGB’s #iWill ambassador, the person nominated by the movement to be involved in a number of cross-communal and interfaith activities rooted in social action. As part of the programme, she volunteered in South Africa and Soweto and met Sadiq Khan the day after his election as Mayor of London. She credits her participation in the programme for having helped to develop her confidence, leadership skills and community awareness. Her volunteering continues in JLGB, where she is responsible for the 16 to 18-year-old group, making her the youngest senior leader in the movement. Her positive attitude to hard work and enthusiastic input makes her one of the most sought-after young leaders. She coordinates social and training weekends, helps children at weekly groups, and has held regional positions. JLGB staff say she probably spends the equivalent of a day job on voluntary hours every week, an astonishing feat to maintain during her A-level year.

ROI SCHIFF, AGED 17 A co-creator of the government watchdog website GovTracker, Adam has shown phenomenal initiative and entrepreneurialism in the development of the project. He has impressed onlookers with his ahead-of-the-game views on political culpability, and was determined to hold legislators and leaders to account before the term ‘post-truth’ even entered the playing field. Now a highly relevant tool, GovTracker is a go-to resource for political commentators, analysts and A-level students alike. Adam’s belief and motivation enabled him to gather a talented team of graphic designers and programmers to help him to realise his vision. His engagement in politics and commitment to finding truth makes him a confident debater and public speaker, and he has been praised for his ability to provide transparent, lucid explanations when discussing governmental issues, something that many older and more experienced politicians lack. He is adaptable and team-oriented, and we look forward to more of Adam’s exciting developments in the future.

ZOHAR BENCHETRIT, AGED 14 Zohar, who is multilingual, uses her love and appreciation of cooking to explore her diverse Jewish roots, which range from Morocco and Algeria to Poland and the Czech Republic. While she was working on various social action projects with the Yoni Jesner Foundation, she came across the JW3 Challah for Hunger programme, in which volunteers bake and sell challah in aid of the charities Tzedek and Doorstep for the Homeless. Zohar is now a volunteer on a number of JW3 projects, and also works as a youth leader on the school holiday play schemes, despite being aged just 14. At JFS, she was awarded the first Mensch Prize for her academic work as well as her commitment to social action, and her strong belief in the importance of human rights makes her a keen follower of politics and current affairs. Zohar demonstrates many excellent leadership qualities and will be one to watch in years to come.

A madrich on Ezra and a committed Talmud scholar, Roi has single-handedly developed the website Time4Torah, which has been designed in order to make Mishnah study more accessible and engaging for young people. Inspired by his own love of rabbinical texts and the desire to share his passion, Roi started an online learning project designed to teach the Mishnah over three and a half years to daily users. Now the website and lessons are planned and launched, but Roi continues to contribute and update the programme by recording 15-minute talks every day. He also organises parties to celebrate the completion of every section. His commitment to Judaism and teaching, in a practical and creative way, opens up learning to new people. Roi’s database now contains more than 1,000 names. His commitment to education extends to Ezra, where he is a well-respected madrich.

HERSHI SCHNECK, AGED 16 Hershi is a young man who has found his calling through volunteering at Step by Step, a charity that looks after young people with special needs. Since he became involved with the organisation, his confidence has flourished and he has overcome remarkable challenges, building connections with the young people he supports and sharing his own sensitivity and intelligence. He ran the most recent recruiting programme for the charity and motivated others to follow his lead in offering care to people with disabilities, including at a full-time residential programme over the summer. Hershi’s positive lead-by-example style means that many of his peers have also volunteered at Step by Step, and they are now providing care and entertainment on a regular basis to those who are most in need of it. His teachers at Hasmonean have also lauded Hershi’s academic credentials, which they say have expanded rapidly since his transfer from a school where the primary focus was on Talmud study.

Francine Wolfisz speaks to Lord Michael Grade, television impresario and now theatre producer, as his stunning revival of 42nd Street brings a touch of razzmatazz to the West End

ide-eyed and tiny in stature, five-year-old Michael Grade sat on a bucket placed in the wings of Finsbury Park Empire, mesmerised as his Aunt Kathy performed in a production of Babes In The Wood. Now 70 years later, Grade – who comes from a family of showbusiness impresarios – reveals his enthusiasm for the stage is as strong as ever. With an enduring career in TV that has encompassed London Weekend Television, the BBC, ITV and almost a decade as chief executive of Channel Four, the Tory peer has in recent years produced show-stopping musicals. Two years ago he and business partner Michael Linnit were behind the smash production of Sweeney Todd starring Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel, while the duo scored further success with last year’s Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close.

Their latest venture is an opulent £6million revival of 42nd Street at Drury Lane’s Theatre Royal, which officially opened on Tuesday. The cast includes chart-topping Scottish singer Sheena Easton, in her West End debut as fallen star Dorothy Brock, ex-Emmerdale actor Tom Lister as desperate director Julian Marsh and Clare Halse as newcomer Peggy Sawyer. The all-singing, high-kicking and prodigious cast of 50 is “dazzling”, says Grade, 74. The tale features the songs of Harry Warren and Jewish lyricist Al Dubin, including such classics as We’re In The Money, Shuffle Off to Buffalo, I Only Have Eyes For You and 42nd Street. “This is a little Cinderella fairy tale about an understudy who becomes a star. When it was made by Warner Brothers in 1933, they were about to go bankrupt and it was at the height of the Depression in America. The story captured the mood and cheered

everybody up and today the message endures,” Grade enthuses. The rags-to-riches story steeped in a world of showbusiness resonates strongly with Grade, for it is one that echoes his own family’s experience. His father, Leslie (born Winogradsky), was the youngest of three brothers in a family of RussianJewish migrants living in Stepney. Both his parents worked in the textile industry, but Leslie, who left school at 14, pursued a career in showbusiness, eventually becoming one of the country’s best-known theatrical talent agents. Older brother Lew became a television mogul, while middle son Bernard Delfont(Boris), established himself as a leading West End producer. Showbusiness is more than just something Grade loves – it’s in his blood. “You can say that again!” he laughs. “My uncle Bernie loved musical theatre, my dad was more variety and revue and my uncle Lew loved television, so they certainly covered the spectrum.” What was it like growing up in a family of entertainment royalty? “I always got the good seats,” he smiles. “I can remember when there was a

different variety bill at The London Palladium every week, with huge American and British stars. In the holidays, we’d go almost every night. I fell in love with the theatre that way.” Grade’s family were also significant in forming his Jewish identity. His mother Lynn, who was not Jewish, left the family when Grade was three, leaving his “Yiddisher” grandmother to bring him up. “My Jewishness is very important to me,” explains Grade, who is married to Francesca, his third wife, and has three children. “I’m very proud of that; I’ve never hidden it and I feel very strongly about the culture. I feel connected, very much so.” His impressive career has spanned journalism, television, business and everything in between and he once earned $500,000 while working in Hollywood. He took “the biggest pay cut in history” when he returned to the UK as BBC1 controller – on a salary of £37,000. Grade introduced the likes of Neighbours, EastEnders, Friends and ER onto our screens. Not everyone has agreed with him along the way, but he has endured and is now looking to take the skills he evolved

within the TV industry to breathe new life into West End theatre. He says he enjoyed his time in TV, but adds: “ I love to go into a theatre and just stand and watch the audience. You can’t do that in telly.” Grade relishes taking his five grandchildren to the theatre. “I’ve got to nurture the audience of the future,” he quips. “I recently took all my grandchildren to see School of Rock. That special main course seder night meal has to tick certain criteria; slow long cooking so food will not spoil, can be prepared in advance, uses readily available ingredients, easy to serve for large numbers, requires few kitchen utensils and, above all, will be thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family!

SERVES 8

COOKING TIME 3 HOURS 15 MINUTES

3 tablespoons olive oil 3kg shin of beef cut into 4cm pieces 5 onions – peeled and sliced 4 large parsnips – peeled and cut into chunky wedges 4 large carrots – peeled and cut into chunky wedges 200ml red wine 500ml beef stock – 500ml hot water with 2 tablespoons beef stock 150g stoned dates 3 tablespoons horseradish sauce 3 tablespoons parsley – roughly chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper

This recipe covers all these requirements and uses horseradish and parsley, the symbolic seder night ingredients, which you will no doubt have in your cupboards. The addition of dates adds a little natural sweetness to harmonise the overall combined flavours. I like to serve it with either mashed or fondant potatoes.

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 170°C/ 325°F/ Gas mark 3. 2 Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Sauté the beef until brown and the onions until softened and golden but not burnt. This will take about 10 minutes.

Garnish: Sprigs of parsley – finely chopped

3 Transfer to a large ovenware dish. Add the parsnips, carrots, wine, stock, dates, horseradish sauce and parsley and season with salt and pepper.

Let my people Goa Keeley Bolger enjoys a new state of relaxation in India’s luxury beach destination

’m not sure what to expect when I reach my hotel in Goa. It’s dark and I only manage to snatch glimpses of coconut trees and the grand white balconies that nod to the state’s Portuguese colonial past – one that centuries ago hosted a notable Jewish population. “Goa is not like anywhere else in India,” says our driver proudly. “It moves at its own pace.” It’s not the first time I’ve heard about Goa’s famous gear switch – quite a contrast to the rest of India. It has a reputation for attracting laid-back hippies on yoga retreats and budget travellers seeking cheap massages on the beach. But I’m not a backpacker or a lover of lazing on beaches, so how do I fit into all of this? Quite easily, it turns out. Relaxation is the order of the day across the south of India’s smallest and richest state, and well-being is a key focus for the Park Hyatt and The Leela, the first two hotels I stay in during my break. Away from the honeymoon hordes and the busy hippy paradise of the north, hotels like this are helping to reposition Goa as a luxury beach destination. Both properties have enviable access to gloriously quiet and unspoilt stretches.

IT’S HARD NOT TO FEEL RELAXED WHEN THE DAYS FALL INTO A HAPPY PATTERN OF SWIMS, FRESH FISH CURRY AND LOLLING IN THE SUN

Of course, there are things to do; you can jet ski, have Goan cookery lessons or play tennis. But when the coastline is this beautiful and peaceful, it feels churlish to practise my serves. Nestled in our sun-loungers, my husband and I sip surprisingly delicious salty lime sodas, breaking up the day with ungainly hops into the Arabian Sea, scorching our feet on the sand in doing so. Indeed, it’s hard not to feel relaxed when the days fall into a happy pattern of swims, fresh fish curry and lolling in the sun. A hefty gin and tonic from a nearby beach shack sets the mood as we watch people paragliding along the coastline, while the sky turns pink. “Great view from the office,” I say to the owner of the beach shack. “It’s like this every night,” he replies with a smile. After all my idling on the beach, I decide to turn down the dial from ‘relaxed’ to ‘positively horizontal’ with a trip to the Park Hyatt’s spa. There, a cashew nut ritual awaits me. The therapist promises me a holistic retreat from the world where my body will be nourished and my mind relaxed. After a sauna and shower, my feet are buffed and soaked and I’m scrubbed all over with the spa’s oily cashew product to gently exfoliate my skin, before being wrapped up and massaged. A head massage with the cashew oil follows, as does another steam, a shower and another massage. When my time is up, I’m helped into a fluffy robe and given a cashew nectar drink to sip while I ‘adjust’ to my surroundings. As morning routines go, this is one I could certainly get used to. BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER This sedra is the only one to have the word ‘command’ as its name. It occurs at the beginning and at the conclusion and it is a phrase used 11 more times. It is therefore worth considering the nature of commandments and the position of one who is commanded. The Gemara states: “Greater is the one who is commanded and does than the one who is not commanded and does”. What the rabbis mean is that, on a scale of merit, it is a greater act to fulfil a commandment than it is to do the same action on one’s own volition. This appears to be counter-intuitive. Surely a volunteer is nobler than a paid worker and being self-motivated to do good is greater than goodness resulting from instruction? Tosafot explains that a person who is commanded has the fear of punishment hanging over them and are therefore very particular in their performance of the precept, so are deserving of greater reward, than someone who does the same act but was not commanded to do so. However, there is another dimension. Somebody who is ordered to do something and does it shows a greater degree of personal freedom than anybody else. Again this seems illogical. Our natural human inclination is to resist the dictates of another being. When we submit ourselves to that command, we have subdued our inclination and freed ourselves of that restrictive psyche. That is therefore a significant act and deserving of greater reward than one who merely chooses to act, following the whims of their heart.

In his biblical commentary, Tzror Hamor, the 15th century scholar, Rabbi Avraham Saba, writes: “Just as we are obligated to erase the name of Amalek, so too we are obligated to honour the name of Jethro.” Amalek represents an evil that is obstinate and unmoved by any information or experience. For example, Amalek wages war with the Jewish people even after knowing of their miraculous victory over Egypt. Conversely, Jethro represents the very opposite characteristic. When he heard information that challenged his philosophy and way of life, he courageously acknowledged and incorporated it into his life, at great personal cost. Perhaps it was in deference to Jethro’s spiritual integrity, that Moses implored

his father-in-law to join the Jews on their desert odyssey and link his fate to theirs, saying: “Please do not leave us…for you will be eyes for us,” meaning: You will help the Jewish people maintain a fresh set of eyes and a sense of marvel and mystery throughout their journey (of development) that only an outsider can bring to those raised inside a belief system.

And yet, despite Moses’ entreaties, Jethro refuses, saying, “I won’t go, for I will go to my land and my birthplace.” Amazingly, the words Jethro uses to reject Moses’ plea, are the very same words used to frame the formative journey that Abraham, Judaism’s first spiritual seeker, had been willing to take: “Go forth from your land and from your birthplace…” In the same way that Amalek were defined by their close-mindedness, Jethro was defined by his open-mindedness. He was more committed to the search for truth than he was to truth itself. Which explains why, even after declaring, “Now I know that [the Jewish] God is greater than all the gods,” he could not bring himself to conclude his search for truth and redirect his need for spiritual seeking into exploring new ways of understanding an infinite God. Thus Jethro became the first of many who, in their search for the truth in everything, end up finding truth in nothing.

Following the Daily Mail’s controversial ‘Legs-It’ front page, how do we address modern sexism?

BY DEBORAH BLAUSTEN The Torah commands us to honour our parents. But anyone who has been a child knows this is sometimes easier said than done. The Talmud situates the discussion about honouring one’s parents alongside one about the responsibilities that parents have towards their children, reminding us that the parent-child relationship is a reciprocal one. Parents are responsible for feeding, teaching, training and caring for their children. In return, children are obliged to honour their parents and take care of them when they are able to do so. The Talmud details the lengths a person must go to in order to honour their parents, including seemingly tolerating extreme or irrational behaviour, such as when a father throws his son’s purse of money into the sea or a mother tears her son’s clothes and spits in his face. Children should not undermine

their parents’ teaching and take care in correcting mistakes they make so as not to embarrass them. These obligations seemingly put undue pressure on the child to be subject to behaviour unacceptable to modern sensibilities. Maimonides explains that a parent is not allowed to intentionally exploit these rules and exercise wanton, irrational behaviour. If they do, they place a “stumbling block before the blind” and the child can forgo their parents’ honour and ignore them. If the behaviour is as a result of diminished capacity on behalf of parents, then the child is also not considered to be dishonouring them if they need to charge someone else with their care. Parents are to be honoured, but our tradition acknowledges that relationships are a two-way street.

When I saw the Daily Mail’s front page featuring the legs of British Prime Minister Theresa May and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon – and the outrage it caused – it set me pondering the casual sexism I experience every day. When I thought about becoming a rabbi, my privileged upbringing in a liberal London bubble, and perhaps my naivety, meant I never considered my gender in terms of the decision. Yet I have spent the past 10 years being introduced as a ‘female’ rabbi, while my male counterparts are introduced without an announcement of their gender. By saying ‘female’ rabbi, it suggests women are not the norm. In truth, half the Liberal rabbinate is

now female – a statistic that is similar in our sister Progressive movements around the world. Then there is the term ‘girl’. Flattering as some might suggest it is to refer to me or any woman in this way, I am not a girl any more than a 38-year-old man with three children and a responsible job is a ‘boy’. As Mayim Bialik said recently:

I struggle with the fact this article was written by a woman, columnist Sarah Vine, who seems to feel the need to undermine women and deepen their insecurity. I urge every one of you to think about the language you use each day.
