British student killed in Israel was ‘a treasure’
STARTER FOR
Hannah Bladon’s family ‘devastated’ after tragic Jerusalem stabbing attack Family and friends of Hannah Bladon, the British student stabbed to death on Good Friday on Jerusalem’s light rail service, have paid tribute to “a caring, compassionate, rare treasure”. The 21-year-old from Burton-on-Trent [pictured below] was studying theology at the Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School. She was attacked by a Palestinian man, who pulled a knife from his bag and repeatedly stabbed her as the tram neared Jerusalem’s City Hall. Hannah’s course was part of an exchange programme with Birmingham University, where she had been reading religion, theology and archaeology since 2015. She arrived in the country in January and was due to finish in September. She had visited an archaeological dig on the morning of her death. Hannah was a devout member of her local church and a devoted Derby County supporter. The football team held a minute’s silence before its game on Sunday in her memory. Her “devastated” family have paid tribute to the “most caring, sensitive and compassionate daughter you could ever wish for.” Rona Evyasaf, who taught her at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, told Jewish News: “My acquaintance with Hannah was too short. I found
this Sunday
her to be very serious about her studies. Her tragic death has left me and a lot of others here in Israel shocked and sad. I take a small comfort in the fact that she partly fulfilled some of her dreams in coming to study in Israel and participating in digs.” Birmingham University told Jewish News it is planning on an event to bring students and staff together to remember Hannah. Her personal tutor, Dr Andrew Davies, called Hannah a “rare treasure”. He added: “One of the first things that struck us about her was her enthusiasm. She was always first to be there for lectures, brighteyed, bushy-tailed, even in the early hours of the morning. Really enthusiastic, really dedicated and really committed – clear first-class material, and she wanted to be an academic in the future.” Meanwhile, it has emerged that her killer told investigators he attacked the student because he wanted to die and hoped that the soldier standing next to her would shoot him dead. Jamil Tamimi, 57, from East Jerusalem, has been described as having severe mental problems and is said to have made previous suicide attempts, once swallowing razor blades. Tragically, Hannah was only standing close to Tamimi, next to the exit doors of the train, because she gave up her seat for a young mum with a baby.

Theresa May’s surprise decision to call a General Election on 8 June sent shockwaves through Westminster this week. The prime minister said she would be seeking a mandate for her strategy in the forthcoming negotiations on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU. This will be the third time UK voters have headed to the polls in three years. See page 2

News / General Election 2017
Jewish MPs say they’ll stand Labour’s Luciana Berger, Ruth Smeeth and Louise Ellman are among the Jewish MPs to announce their plans to fight for re-election as the line-up of candidates in London’s most Jewish constituencies begins to take shape, writes Justin Cohen. MPs yesterday overwhelmingly backed Theresa May’s shock decision to seek an early General Election on 8 June, sounding the starting gun on a 50-day campaign. The prime minister, speaking in Downing Street, said Westminster had failed to come together when stability was needed after the vote to leave the European Union. Berger, who won Liverpool Wavertree with a majority of more than 24,000 and nearly 70 percent of the vote in 2015, was among the raft of Labour MPs who left Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet ahead of the last leadership contest. Ellman will defend a similar majority in neighbouring Riverside. With Labour 21 points behind in some of the latest polls, Smeeth will face an altogether tougher test in again seeking the nomination for Stoke on Trent Central, where she will defend a majority of just under 5,000. Mike Freer, Conservative MP for Finchley and Golders Green, won a majority of nearly 6,000 at the last election and

Labour candidates: Luciana Berger, left, and Ruth Smeeth
backed the prime minister’s decision to seek parliamentary approval for a new poll. “The UK’s future relationship with the European Union is the most important political issue of the day,” he said. “With a strong mandate from the people of the UK, Theresa May will strengthen her negotiating hand.” The country, he said, faced a choice between strong government or an “unstable coalition government led by Jeremy Corbyn and propped up by the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party”. Stressing his record in standing up for Jewish and other communities, Freer added: “The PM has been resolute on anti-Semitism and extremism. The Jewish community knows that in Theresa May and me, they have a true friend and supporter.” He is likely to fancy his chances of extending his majority further, as will Matthew Offord in neighbouring Hendon, the other seat with the largest Jewish community in the UK. Andrew Dismore, a former MP for the area, is yet to

declare if he will put his name forward. Tulip Siddiq, who narrowly saw off a Conservative challenge at the last election, will seek a second term in Hampstead and Kilburn. She said it had been the “greatest honour I could have wished for” to represent the constituency for the last two years, during which she’s challenged the premier at PMQs more than any other backbench MP. She said a “hard Brexit” must be rejected. In a statement focusing on her record locally, she said: “It has been my absolute pleasure to attend countless festivals and celebrations in our local shuls and community centres. The age-old evil of anti-Semitism continues to blight our society, which is why it has been a privilege to shape Parliament’s response through my role as the vice-chair for the APPG on anti-Semitism. Ahead of this general election, I hope that the Jewish community across Hampstead and Kilburn will place their trust in me once again.” Ilford North’s Labour incumbent Wes Streeting, vice chair of the APPG against anti-Semitism, could face a re-match with two-term MP Lee Scott, who missed out by just 598 votes last time. The latter – who has declared his intention to seek the Tory nomination – said: “I have been contacted by hundreds of residents asking me to stand again. With their help, I am confident we can help deliver the mandate Theresa May seeks to deliver a good Brexit for Britain.” In Hertsmere, meanwhile, Oliver Dowden will defend a majority of 18,000. He said: “It has been a privilege to serve Hertsmere, my home patch, and an area I know so well for the past two years. I have tried to be a strong voice for the people that elected me. It would be an honour to serve again.” Among the other Jewish candidates standing are Robert Halfon and Ed Miliband.

Yom HaShoah / News
Thrones star’s tribute Game of Thrones star Laura Pradelska has paid tribute to the “resilience, strength and courage” of her grandparents, who all survived the Holocaust, ahead of this year’s Yom HaShoah commemoration, writes Francine Wolfisz. The actress, who starred as Quaithe in the hit HBO series, has been invited to address the audience at the Allianz stadium on Sunday, as part of this year’s theme, Women’s Resistance. Speaking to Jewish News this week, the German-born actress revealed how her father’s mother, Klara Stern, was married just before the war and gave birth to her first child while living in a labour camp in Nowy Sacz, Poland. One day, after returning from a forcedlabour factory, Klara discovered both her parents and her seven-month-old son had been murdered by the Nazis. She was later separated from her husband and deported to Auschwitz, before being forced onto a death march. When the war ended, Klara found only eight of more than 1 2 0

Her maternal grandmother, Esther Schultz, also survived the Holocaust, having managed to secure forged Aryan papers because of her “beautiful blond, Laura Pradelska’s mother, Minka, centre, with sisters blue-eyed looks and Eva and Naomi, and parents Meir and Esther the ability to speak “It was through my grandmother’s Polish without a Yiddish accent”. Mayor to ‘honour’ the past at Yom HaShoah
The mayor, Chief Rabbi and wife Valerie at last year’s event
Sadiq Khan is to address thousands of people at the community’s central Yom HaShoah commemoration in Hendon on Sunday. It will be the second successive year that the mayor of London has attended the event at Barnet Copthall stadium, having made it the very first official event following his City Hall election victory last year. Neil Martin, chief executive of Yom HaShoah UK,
said: “Yom HaShoah is our day to honour the past and pledge to continue the legacy of survivors and refugees. “But it’s also about shaping the future, and the London mayor’s attendence once again shows how we are all working together to ensure a cohesive and strong society that defiantly says ‘never again’.” For free tickets visit yomhashoah.org.uk /nationalevent

News / Mental health
Harry a hero, says campaigner Jonny Jonny Benjamin, the Jewish mental health campaigner who has worked closely with Prince Harry for the royal-backed charity Heads Together, spoke this week of his admiration for the Prince in speaking out about his own issues, writes Jenni Frazer. Benjamin, who was awarded an MBE last year for his work in raising awareness about mental health, told Jewish News: “It’s hard enough dealing with this sort of thing when you are not in the spotlight. I can’t imagine what it’s like when you have so much [public] pressure on you. You only have to look at poor Amy Winehouse and her very public decline as a sad example.” The ex-JFS student was so profoundly affected by his own problems he tried to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge into the Thames and was talked out of it by a stranger. In 2014, Benjamin launched a campaign, Find Mike, to try to locate the man who saved him and now with that man, Neil Laybourn, he is running the London Marathon on Sunday to raise money for Heads Together. The charity was launched last May by Princes Harry and William and the Duchess of Cambridge with the aim of raising £10million mental health initiatives. One such target, says Benjamin, “is to set up a crisis text line for people so that they can have someone to contact immediately. The Marathon is just a start; we hope Heads Together will be a long-term thing”.
This week, Prince Harry took the unprecedented step of speaking out about the profound problems which beset him in his late 20s as a result of repressing grief over the death of his mother, Princess Diana. Benjamin, who has worked with the prince for the past year, says Prince Harry has been “very private about his own issues. It was much more about other people and listening to their experiences. What he has done in speaking out is a huge step”. In the Jewish community, Benjamin said: “Things have changed remarkably. We have a mental health café in Golders Green and people from JAMI [the community mental health organisation] go into schools and shuls. It’s quite amazing: I could never have thought, five years ago, I’d be able to go into a Shabbat service and speak about mental health, but the level of awareness now has a lot to do with people like Prince Harry speaking out. We are a long way from the time when people will treat depression like diabetes, but we are getting there.” His own training for the Marathon was disrupted in February when he went into hospital, but Benjamin says however long it takes he is determined to run on Sunday: “This is being described as the first mental health marathon, and it’s a really big thing.” http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/JonnyandNeil

The May Fair Hotel has cancelled the screening on Sunday of a documentary about convicted Palestinian terrorist Marwan Barghouti. The event was advertised on the UK Palestinian Mission’s website but the venue has told Jewish News it has decided not to proceed after undertaking “standard due diligence”. The advert said the screening of Marwan – organised by Fateh Movement-UK and the General Union of Palestinian Communities in Europe – would mark Prisoners Day in solidarity with 6,500 “political prisoners” in Israeli jails, some of whom would start a hunger strike that day. Barghouti is serving five life sentences for murder and membership of a terrorist organisation. But the advert said the documentary “shows the many faces of the Fateh representative from resistance fighter to advocate of the two-state solution and demonstrates how his personal story is symbolic of the Palestinian people’s fight for freedom and independence”. A spokesperson for the Edwardian Hotels London said: “We were recently approached by the State of Palestine to host a private screening at The May Fair Theatre. As is usual business practice, we reviewed the request and undertook standard due diligence, following which we have decided to not progress this event any further.”
Convicted terrorist Marwan Barghouti
Meanwhile, Liz Spayd, the public editor of The New York Times responded on Tuesday to criticism of the newspaper for publishing an op-ed by Barghouti identifying him only as “a Palestinian leader and parliamentarian”. Nearly a day later, an editor’s note appended to the end of the article clarified that Barghouti is serving a lengthy prison term after being convicted in an Israeli court of five counts of murder and membership of a terrorist organisation.

The chair of Partnerships for Jewish Schools is set to be elected to head the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) after his sole rival withdrew. Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain Hoy Enterprises, will succeed Sir Mick Davis subject to a vote of the organisation’s council next month. It comes after Stephen Pack, who chairs the United Synagogue, pulled out. Goldstein, who will present his manifesto and answer questions at what was to have been a hustings later this month, said: “I am excited at the opportunity to share my views with and take questions from JLC members at the hustings and to stand for election in early May.” In announcing his candidature, he said: “Sir Mick Davis has been a passionate and thoughtful leader of our community and we owe him a debt of gratitude. “I would like to build on his successes and I look forward to sharing my ideas with the JLC membership at the hustings later this month. It would be a great honour to continue serving my community as JLC chair.” PaJeS is an umbrella group for Jewish schools and a division of the JLC, meaning Goldstein is already familiar with the group he now seeks to lead. In 2015, Goldstein was appointed to the Chief Rabbinate Trust, where he was charged with providing “strategic guidance” to the Chief

Explaining his decision to withdraw, Pack said: “After much discussion with the family over Yom Tov, I decided not to accept the nomination to stand. Survivors’ funds / Regev talk / News
Shoah survivors to get more money for increasing needs Survivors in Britain are to get almost twice as much from this year’s Claims Conference budget as they did in 2015 as, although there are fewer survivors, their needs have increased, writes Jenni Frazer. Greg Schneider, executive vice-president of the New Yorkbased Claims Conference, says that funding, allocated to the Association of Jewish Refugees, will be £5,700,448 in 2017, compared with £5,201,878 the previous year, and a huge jump from 2015’s £3,016,878. The money, negotiated by the Claims Conference from the German government, goes to the 45 Aid Society, Agudas Israel Housing Association. North London Bikur Cholim, Association of Jewish Refugees, Jewish Care (the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre/ Shalvata), and Bikur Cholim. Schneider says the work of the Claims Conference is increasing, contrary to popular assumptions, despite the fact
The Claims Conference is distributing more funds to survivors
more and more survivors are passing each year. “In 2016, we distributed more than in any other year of the 65 years of the Claims Conference. And the second biggest year was 2015; the [amount of ] money doesn’t matter, it’s what the money buys, what the survivors need to live. And we are still growing”. More than 70 years after the end of the Second World War, the Claims Conference
is still in negotiation with the German government for funds for survivors. Schneider says one of his greatest challenges is “bridging the gap from the bedroom to the conference room, where we are sitting with all kinds of projections and statistics, how many survivors are still alive, where do they live… and it’s not about that”. Instead, says Schneider: “It’s about the woman who can’t get out of bed. The woman whose
Ambassador to speak at SOAS despite protests by students Mark Regev will next week become the first Israeli diplomat to address students at the School of Oriental and African Studies in more than a decade – despite protests at the historic visit. The ambassador was invited by the UN Society and the Jewish Society, a year after anti-Israel graffiti was daubed on the campus following his meeting with the university’s vicechancellor within days of taking up the post. Thirty-three university societies, including the Palestine Society, Herb Society, Decolonising Our Minds Society and Origami Society, have signed a statement protesting the event, which they say “flies in the face” of the Students’ Union backing for the boycott campaign. They call for supporters to join ‘Apartheid off Campus’ day next Thursday, ahead of the talk that evening.
Suggesting “armed embassy personnel” would accompany the ambassador, they suggest many students “fear for their safety with Israeli security personnel roaming our campus. Palestinian staff and students would be subject to the same questioning and searching they suffered living under military occupation in Palestine should they attend a public event”. They also claim that more than than 100 academic staff have signed a statement against Regev’s presence. The university’s registrar pledged it was in contact with the union and societies involved to ensure “the event can take place safely” and told SOAS staff: “SOAS is a place which promotes freedom of debate and has a long tradition of hosting speakers from all over the world.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
SUPPORTERS WARNED OF ZERO TOLERANCE ON ANTI-SEMITISM Football fans have been warned that there will be zero tolerance towards anyone caught chanting anti-Semitic abuse at this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Action against Discrimination and the Board of Deputies of British Jews have called on both clubs, the FA and Metropolitan Police to remind fans of their behaviour ahead of the match at Wembley Stadium. AAD chairman Jonathan Metliss said: “It’s about time the vile chanting from the Chelsea supporters towards Tottenham supporters is brought to an end. We’re endeavouring to ensure this won’t take place at the match – if it does, offenders should be appropriately dealt with.”
ORTHODOX UKIP CANDIDATE ‘SORRY’ FOR BURNING BIBLE
An Orthodox Jewish candidate for mayor of Manchester apologised after burning what he called a “missionary bible” and posting images of it on social media. Shneur Odze, who is a candidate for the UK Independence Party, or UKIP, on the eve of Passover found the Hebrew-language New Testament produced by a proselytising Christian group in his synagogue. He took it out into the street and set it alight, according to reports. He then posted photos of the book burning and wrote on Twitter: “Grateful to whoever put a missionary bible among our synagogue’s books. Was wondering what I’d burn my Chametz with.” The post has been removed from his Twitter feed and Odze said he “felt he had no choice but to burn the book’.
whole family was brought to a ravine, and they were all shot. By a miracle the bullets missed her, but she fell into a pit with every single person she knew in the world, her parents, her grandparents, her aunts, uncles, her entire community. And she waited until she thought the Nazis were gone, and then she clawed her way out, past the bodies.” Schneider met this woman in Ukraine. She has no one, he says, and, without the Claims Conference, there would be no one to care for her in any way. “If we don’t succeed [in our negotiations with the Germans], that woman is doomed. That propels us. The intensity of understanding that the bedroom is usually one room, where there is a bed. And we have to bridge that gap between those two places, her bedroom and the conference room, with all its graphs and the charts. That’s why we do what we do.”

Archive released / News
Shoah docs revealed An archive of Holocaust evidence long closed to public view has been made available in London for the first time since the 1940s, when it was used by the United Nations’ War Crimes Commission. The vast UNWCC trove of documents, most of which were smuggled out of Eastern Europe during the early 1940s and later used to convict leading Nazis, are being opened at the Wiener Library this week. Until now, only researchers with special permission from their governments and the UN were able to view them, and even then they were not allowed to take copies. It shows how Britain, the US and Russia were slow to press for leading Nazis to face trial for crimes against humanity, with countries such as Poland leading the call. In another bundle of documents built up to indict Adolf Hitler for war crimes in Czechoslovakia, there is an affidavit from British soldier Harry Ogden,

who was imprisoned in a prisoner-of-war camp next to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The release shows how the Polish government in exile was able to provide extraordinary detail of the camps in which Jews and others were held and killed, with one 1944 description documenting how victims were forced to strip and how “the terracotta floors in the chambers… became very slippery when wet”. The London library was originally founded in the
Netherlands and is named after Alfred Wiener, who shipped his collection to the UK in 1939, subsequently working with British authorities to chart the crimes of the Nazi government. Archivist Howard Falksohn said the release meant scholars “may be able to rewrite crucial chapters of history using the new evidence”. The online release has been timed to coincide with the launch of Human Rights After Hitler, a book by Dan Plesch, a London-based researcher who has had access to the archive for ten years. He helped to convince diplomats to open access to the documents. Plesch describes how the changing geopolitical landscape of the late 1940s meant that prosecuting Nazis became less important than rallying support for America’s anti-Communist offensive at the start of the Cold War.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Psychological journey from loss to rebirth The period from Yom HaShoah to Yom Hazikaron to Yom Ha’atzmaut is an eight-day journey, from a people’s loss to a people’s rebirth. It is a tale of travel from darkness into light. The dates were chosen and enshrined in law by Israel’s first prime minitser, David Ben-Gurion in 1953. To him, the symbolism in the timing was significant: his country would go from mourning the victims of genocide and war to celebrating the wonders of nationhood and independence. This year, as Israelis stand silent in remembrance, we stand with them. As they celebrate the joy of Israel, we celebrate with them. In November we will celebrate 100 years since Britain played its part in the creation of Israel. But in this year of centenaries, we know that looking back is as important as looking forward. We hope and pray that our children and grandchildren will one day celebrate the day when Israel finally sees peace with her Arab and Palestinian neighbours and ensures her Jewish and democratic status for years to come. Perhaps that day could be called the Day of the Future.
Our grand celebration Twenty years ago this newspaper’s first issue hit the streets of London. Next week we will publish our 1,000th! We will mark this literally grand occasion with a special 40-page souvenir magazine looking back at how the publication has analysed, scrutinised and celebrated two decades of vibrant Jewish life in Britain, Israel and across the world. Pick up your copy of our landmark issue next Thursday and celebrate with us!

LABOUR’S LONG DECLINE In the aftermath of the Ken Livingstone saga, Jeremy Newmark of the Jewish Labour Movement has the temerity to suggest that people should join the Labour Party to fight anti-Semitism. The Jewish Labour group has been wholly ineffective against the surge of anti-Semitic sentiment expressed by some of its MPs and councillors. The real issue
surrounds the big Union bully boys who control the Party with their members’ money. Why didn’t Mr Newmark speak out against the late Bob Crow (rail union leader) who years ago appeared to suggest that Israel should be bombed, no doubt for defending itself against Palestinian terror? Why hasn’t he spoken against Len McCluskey, as there have been undertones of anti-Semitism by

I write in reference to Baroness Warsi’s comments that anyone from this country going to enlist in the IDF should be regarded in the same light as those who join Daesh and be put on trial. Is she really saying they are the same; the one

Britain does owe an apology
ENGAGE WITH THOSE OF DIFFERING VIEWS
Uri Rabin was right to suggest the Jews are owed an apology from the British Government over the Balfour Declaration, but not for the reasons he states (Jewish News, 23 March). To understand why requires an explanation of what Balfour was and what it was not. Balfour’s letter to Lord Rothschild was not a guarantee to anyone; this is where Jenny Tonge and her cohort deliberately distort the facts to suit their narrative. It was an expression of wishes, of best endeavours as the letter states, and it was even-handed to both Jews and Arabs inhabiting Palestine. What is often forgotten is the letter refers specifically to the rights and political status of Jews in other countries not being prejudiced by the creation of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. Mr Rabin refers to other such declarations, however the significance of Balfour is that it was General Allenby’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force that ended 400 years of Ottoman Turkish rule and established a British mandate in Palestine. The legitimate reasons for Britain
Your issue of 23 March puzzled me. First, your story that the Board of Deputies president advises Jewish students not to study at LSE. Would we gain anything from this? We need to have intellectual debate, educate and turn enemies of beliefs and thoughts to understanding friends. Second, the letter from Gerry Goldbloom baffled me. We must not stifle debate and ‘assassinate’ those who do not agree with us but agree to disagree and continue debating.
to apologise to the Jewish people are, firstly, that successive governments and Foreign Office officials spent the next 30 years rowing back from any commitment inferred by Balfour, including the imposition of harsh quotas on Jewish immigration to Palestine in the 1930s, without which many more Jews would have been spared from the Holocaust. The second reason for an apology is that Britain, as the mandatory power in Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, and with significant influence in Iran, failed abysmally to ensure protection of Jews’ civil rights in these countries following the establishment of Israel resulting in their enforced mass exodus. To this day, the vast majority of Middle Eastern countries are no-go areas for Jews. When Theresa May, Boris Johnson, and their colleagues rise to acclaim Britain’s role in the creation of the state of Israel in the run-up to the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, it is to be hoped they will do so with humility rather than triumphalism.

Spicer latest to ride the wave of faux Fuhrerism NICK FERRARI
TV & RADIO PRESENTER
Y
et another supposed big beast and skilled communicator from the arena of politics falls foul of invoking the name of Hitler or the ideals of Nazism in a cheap way to try and stun an audience with the magnitude of their comparison. Sadly, for White House press secretary Sean Spicer, this turned more into a case of schlock and flaw as opposed to shock and awe. Showing less of a grasp on the subject than might reasonably be expected from an educationally troubled 11-year-old stuck at the bottom of the B stream in history, Spicer turned in his own version of Holocaust denial. “You had someone as despicable as Hitler, who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons,” he said. As the press corps let out a collective whoosh of stunned and disbelieving breath, the idiot Spicer waded deeper into the mire. “When it comes to sarin gas, (Hitler) was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing.”
❝
SPICER SHOWED LESS GRASP ON THE SUBJECT THAN AN 11-YEAR-OLD STUCK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ‘B’ STREAM IN HISTORY When challenged by a journalist, Spicer managed to switch from being plain dumb to outright offensive. He blathered away about how Hitler “brought them into Holocaust centres”. What the hell is a “Holocaust centre?” It makes it sound like a cross between an elderly day club and a garden store. Even if he’d stayed up all night thinking about it, it’s hard to imagine he could have been seen to be more callous or incorrect. Spicer is not alone in recently riding a wave of faux Fuhrerism, with perhaps
the most egregious offender being former London mayor Ken Livingstone. It is in no way stretching the truth to suggest Livingstone has form in this area, but his latest outburst is surely the crowning glory of all his many crass comments. He effectively tried to link Zionism to Nazism and has yet to show a shred of remorse. After an inquiry lasting 11 months, the Labour Party finally decided to take action. Remembering the party has been riven with accusations of anti-Semitism and is struggling to emerge from a sinister cloak of supposed anti-Jewish action and rhetoric, here was an opportunity to show they were ready to take a hard line. However, they bottled it and instead of expelling him, handed Livingstone (who had previously told journalists even he thought he would be booted out) a suspension. Then, this rush to revisionism spread across the English Channel when French far-right leader and Presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen sought to absolve France of complicity in the rounding up and deportation of thousands of Jews to death
camps (or those “Holocaust centres” as Spicer likes to refer to them) during the war. As recently as 1995, former President Jacques Chirac formally acknowledged that while the French had rightly been famous for their resistance movement during the war, there had been the darker side of the Vichy and of police aiding the Nazi occupiers in identifying and sending thousands of the country’s Jews to their death. While it would be a dangerously retrograde step to try and ban any allusion to Adolf Hitler or Nazis in public life, it is vital sensitivities are always observed. We’ve been laughing at aspects of our wars with the Germans for decades; all the way from wartime BBC radio comedy ITMA to Dad’s Army and from Basil Fawlty’s peerless Fawlty Towers sketch with his German hotel guests to Blackadder. Handled correctly, drawing elements from one of the darkest times in recent history can work. Get it wrong and, to quote Shakespeare’s Macbeth, it is merely “sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
For the first time in my adult life, I may not vote JENNI FRAZER
W
hen I was little and my mother was trying to teach me how to navigate the seder and the Haggadah, I remember getting to the part of the plagues and her telling me how my grandmother would routinely add an extra plague to the 10 we already had — Hitler. I have to admit that, aged five or six, I hadn’t the faintest idea what grandma meant, only catching on years later when I read about the ironic Russian Jewish prayer: “May God save and keep the Tsar… far away from us.” Just such a prayer could equally be applied to those who invoke Hitler. Only those living under rocks or elsewhere in the galaxy could have failed to have caught on to the endless repetition of Hitler in the past few months. It has begun to feel like being on the receiving end of an interminable series of Channel 5 programmes, Hitler in colour, Hitler the vegetarian, Hitler
who-might-not-have-been-as-bad-asAssad, and – lest we forget – Hitler who supported Zionism. There have been the merely stupid comparisons, such as those made by White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and the calculated, made by the reviled former mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. I don’t believe that Spicer is a Holocaust denier, although there are plenty of people who were quick to pin that label on him. And Spicer, who may not be the sharpest tool in the box, has at least acknowledged that he, as he himself put it, “screwed up”. As for Livingstone, who has consistently and steadfastly refused to apologise for his comments, I believe he is a wily politician who knows exactly what he is doing and how far he can push people. On 5 April — yes, it seems longer ago, doesn’t it? — Labour’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn, back against the wall, announced that there would be a new inquiry into Ken Livingstone’s continuing membership
of the party. I haven’t seen any further details of this inquiry and I doubt very much that either it, or any conclusion, will come in time to save Labour in the general and local elections in the strongholds of Jewish voters. Last Wednesday, a group of the usual suspects, the “As-A-Jews” immortalised by Howard Jacobson, wrote a whining letter to the Guardian saying why Livingstone should not be thrown out of the Labour Party. Interestingly, two of the signatories – Tony Greenstein and Jackie Walker – are themselves facing party disciplinary proceedings. To the Jew in the pew, I wonder how much any of this backstabbing and infighting actually penetrates. For me,
❝
for the first time in my life, I am considering not voting at all, which I regard as a terrible betrayal of all that previous generations of women, and previous generations of Jews, went through in order for me to be able to have my say at the ballot box. What I’m left with is a feeling of astonishment that, after nearly 80 years, the name of Hitler can still be conjured up with such ease and that comparisons with the Nazis are so carelessly invoked. I also know that at last week’s seder, as we were calling out the names of the plagues, and the children round the table laughed and made faces, there was another name which I added to my list. Thanks for the idea, grandma.

What have Jews ever done for the Muslim community? FIYAZ MUGHAL
FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR, FAITH MATTERS
T
he above question is one I’ve heard over the years while working in Muslim communities. Such statements usually come from those who see Jewish communities primarily through the lens of the Middle East political scenario. So much so that it is one of the first things that come to mind when Jewish communities are mentioned. So what have Jews ever done for us? Well how about the human rights we enjoy and the ability to walk down the street without getting beaten up? That is partly down to Jewish men and women who stood firm on the streets of our country against those who wanted a mono-faith and mono-cultural Britain. Their efforts, their blood, sweat and toil is embedded into the streets of our country. We can never allow our nation to be taken over by those who seek to divide communities or to promote extremism and intolerance. We can never give up on their courage and their sacrifices to those extremists within far right or
Islamist groups. Or how about the halal food Muslims enjoy? The campaigning to protect halal and shechita has been driven by Jewish communities and is now jointly led because of this initial inspiring work. Many in the over-40 generation will probably have come across or worked within racial equality councils in their lives. Such institutions came about partly because of campaigning by Jews for equal rights for black and minority ethnic communities and through political lobbying in the societal fight against racism and prejudice. Jews led these campaigns with other communities. That joint activism shaped and changed a Britain over many decades where many within these communities ran the gauntlet of being regularly abused when they went shopping or when they dropped their children at schools. Many have forgotten these times and think modern day Britain has not changed. That is simply not true or reflective of the huge societal progressive changes that have swept our tiny island and which we must
acknowledge. However, what is depressing is that today, our Jewish brothers and sisters are not seen as being part of the social activism within black and minority ethnic communities. They have been pushed outside of these activism circles by discussions within such communities which sometimes support antiSemitic notions of Jews being powerful and that minority rights are about challenging power. The latter is true, but it must never be tied to anti-Semitic discourse which alienates a historically and socially active community which has been at the vanguard of the struggle against racism. Just because most Askenazi Jews are white does not mean that they do not suffer prejudice and hatred on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Or how about Jewish activism which has positively shaped hate crime legislation? I have worked for many years countering anti-Muslim hatred. The work around tackling hate crimes has been shaped by Jewish communities. Who can forget the murder of Stephen Lawrence that shocked a nation and led to
Jews, African Caribbeans, Muslims and other communities coming together to shape an agenda. We must not forget that some within Muslim communities also realise how much we owe to Jewish activism, spirituality and the deep sense of moral care embedded in and part of the make-up of Judaism. The support provided to Bradford’s Reform synagogue by local British Muslims was a beacon of hope and inspiration which should be highlighted over and over to those whose motivations and beliefs towards Jews are informed by anger about the Middle East conflict. We know that sometimes this dog whistle politics is couched within the term ‘Zionist’ as though it is a get-out clause for some antiSemites who can wallow in their ignorance, hatred and intolerance. Individuals who use the situation in the Middle East to target Jewish businesses and religious institutions and create divisions between Muslims and Jews need to be told that their politics of hate is well and truly over. Of that we can be sure.

Genius who was light years ahead Geoffrey Rush reveals the many challenges of portraying visionary physicist and cultural icon Albert Einstein
A
lbert Einstein once famously said: “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity – and I’m not sure about the universe.” Behind the prolific German-Jewish physicist who unlocked the mysteries of the cosmos was a man grappling with a tumultuous private life and rising anti-Semitism in Europe, as revealed in Genius, a new 10-part series charting his life from National Geographic, starting on Sunday. Featuring Einstein’s lovers, enemies and fellow scientific luminaries, the cast includes Emily Watson as his second wife – and first cousin – Elsa Einstein, as well as Australian actor Geoffrey Rush as the celebrated scientist. How much did you know about Einstein before you started working on Genius? Geoffrey Rush (GR): I was four when Einstein died, so there was not a huge amount of overlap. Everything I know is from the legend of who he was, because he was one of the most idiosyncratic figures of the 20th century. He was a cult figure, as famous as Charlie Chaplin. In a pre-celebrity world, they were household names. Chaplin for being an amazing film-maker and clown, and Einstein for being a complex theoretical physicist, who wrote a theory that toppled all the existing orthodoxy that had been around for 300 years. What were you most surprised to learn about Einstein? GR: There was quite a bit. He was famous for being famous as a scientist. Everyone knows he had ridiculous hair. It probably came out of his youth at the Prussian Academy where scientists were a little woolier. There are so many photos of him meeting other famous people, like Marilyn Monroe, and of him sticking out his tongue and being cheeky. The great thing about this series is that it looks at his youth. Ultimately, although non-linear, the series shows Einstein from age
passionate. She gave him license to have affairs. They were radical progressives on that level. What does the word genius mean to you? GR: The German philosopher [Arthur] Schopenhauer said: “Talent hits a target that no one else can hit, genius hits a target that no one else can see.” We can apply that to Einstein. He engaged in thought experiments. He would let his mind wander and drift off and speculate. ‘What if I could travel faster than the speed of light, what would light look like?’ Pretty trippy.
Geoffrey Rush, above, plays Albert Einstein, pictured right, in the new series of Genius
five, when his father gave him a compass and young Albert was intrigued at what forces were at work that made the needle always point in one direction, until 76 when he died. There is a lot people don’t know. What were you most surprised to learn about Einstein? GR: How open and gregarious and truly childlike he was for a man with such complexity of ideas. Some people have tried to classify him as somewhat autistic, but I don’t think it’s true, because he loved sailing and intellectual company. He came out of a flourishing Jewish world in early 20th century Germany and he would hang out with his friends and they would play music. Eventually he loved to travel and he had an expansive personality. I was lucky to get a lot of footage of him visiting Britain and the USA, and he seemed to greet press like Groucho Marx. He had people laughing and was kind of clown-like with his naivety. Rumour has it he was thought of as dopey and a slow starter, but he was just daydreaming and that ended up being his greatest strength.
What were some of his quirks? GR: I noticed in early footage, in his teenage years, that he was rebellious and antiauthoritarian and hated the German militaristic sensibility. He was quite outspoken and forthright and sometimes lacking in confidence. Did you know he was such a ladies’ man? GR: I didn’t know about that, but I suppose if you put that equation together, he had a lot of celebrity. I think he had many young lovers, because he moved around a lot. He gave up his German passport and was a bit of a gallivant. He was bright and some women find that deeply attractive. And he had humour. He liked a partner in his life and he found that with Elsa, after his sad and awkward failure of a first marriage to Mileva Maric. He knew his gift only functioned if he lived a well-ordered and coordinated life. He was fortunate with Elsa to find someone happy to be that person. She didn’t match his intellect like Mileva did. Mileva was brilliant, but Elsa was happy to be his manager, mother, organiser, PR person and that marriage was one of deep friendship, but not particularly
What do you hope viewers will get from Genius? GR: I think people might be quite surprised at how immediate the sense of drama is, in a world particularly undergoing radical shifts. There have been arguments about the value of science for humankind and for goodness. There is a part concerning the First World War, where [Nobel prize-winning chemist] Fritz Haber finds out Germany is going to run out of food and he discovers extracting nitrogen and rescues Germany. He also discovered the weapon of chlorine gas under the assumption fewer lives would be lost and it would end the war quicker. Ethical dilemmas dominate the science. Have you enjoyed playing Einstein? GR: Yes, enormously! I thought I’d have to act playing a genius on set every day, but there are many banal and surprising moments. For example, he meets a neighbour, Alice, and she wants him to do her homework for her. He guides her mind into the mystery of maths on a level that would be exciting rather than rigid and formal. I read that someone who was a student of Einstein wrote of him: “He was just the most generous human being.” We don’t find many of them around now, but he seemed interested in the better sides of our nature. Genius airs on Sunday, 23 April, 9pm on National Geographic

SEDRA Shemini
It’s Biblical
BY RABBI RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS This week’s parsha contains two fascinating passages which shed considerable light on our responsibilities as Jews today. The first is the odd behaviour of Aaron’s older two sons Nadav and Abihu, who offer “strange fire” to God right after the Almighty has consumed Aaron’s offering. The sons’ offering is voluntary, not commanded, and God’s response is sudden and violent, giving rise to two conflicting opinions about their offering – arrogant and presumptuous, or very holy indeed. The juxtaposition of the first passage of next week’s parsha (prohibiting service of God while drunk) adds another implication, that the sons of Aaron were inebriated. Shortly after is the passage which details kosher and unclean animals, birds and fish. Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch ties these two together, indicating submission to the Almighty despite the dictates of our personal sentiments should always take precedence. Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev puts it more succinctly. Just as Moses’ sister Miriam arranged for his mother to care for him, God wishes us to follow his rules and feed ourselves accordingly. Yocheved fed Moses food appropriate to being the highest level of prophet. God wants us likewise to abstain from impure foods, so we too achieve our mission to be a Nation of Priests. So much for those who would rationalise our dietary laws, or try to explain how much more healthy they are. Spiritual requirements, not health, are the primary motives, and scientific thought cannot encompass the real rationale.

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL THIS WEEK:
CAIN
Cain was the first child recorded born to a human family. He was so named because his mother was the first human to give birth, a partner in creation to a new being. Cain literally means, ‘the product of creation’. He grew up to be a farmer, working the soil agriculturally. His younger brother, Hevel (Abel) became a sheep farmer. Conscious of the Divine, each set aside something from their crop as an offering to God. While Hevel brought the firstborn of his flock, Cain brought along a selection of vegetables which had no special qualities. God showed acceptance of Hevel’s offering and ignored Cain’s. Anger and
❝
jealousy set in and Cain was crestfallen. God tells Cain that should he improve himself rather than become angry, it would be better for his selfcontrol. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Cain did not take this message to heart. Frustrated, he decided to take out his anger on his brother; he lured Hevel out into the fields and murdered him. When God asked Cain the whereabouts of his brother, he lamely replied: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God was angry with him and told
RACKED WITH GUILT, CAIN CONFESSES HE IS A SINNER, BANISHED FROM SETTLEMENT AND FOREVER EXPOSED AS A MURDERER
Cain that his brother’s blood was crying out from the ground. As punishment, God cursed Cain’s relationship with the land, informing him that from now on he would have to work much harder to get a yield of produce. Furthermore, Cain would have to live a life of wandering, looking for new land to plant as the land would tire of producing for him. Racked with guilt, Cain confesses himself as a sinner, banished from settlement and forever exposed as a murderer, and feels vulnerable to attack. God therefore places a mark on Cain to protect him. Cain then settles down in the land of Nod and starts a family, with hope thus shown to be returning to the world.

The Bible Says What?
Progressively Speaking
An ambiguous message about life after death
With apologies in the news, what’s the Jewish view on saying sorry?
BY RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD Sometimes it is more interesting to notice what the Bible doesn’t say. It is strangely silent on what Maimonides decreed was a critical principle of faith – what, if anything, happens after we die? The idea of the physical resurrection of the dead can be found briefly only in two books – in the apocalyptic writings of Isaiah and Daniel, both very late works, both referring to an end-of-days scenario, neither painting a pleasurable picture. In early biblical texts, those who die are “gathered to their people”. It is an ambiguous idiom upon which later commentators can build the idea of an afterlife, and some sort of spiritual reunion of souls. But the Sadducees, the earliest inheritors of Judaism, who focused on the Temple rituals above all, rejected the idea of life after death, specifically because it was not a biblical idea. It was the Pharisees, the forerunners of the Rabbinic tradition, who embraced the idea and built on it. It was they who developed the concept of the
immortality of the soul, leading to post-mortem judgement, followed by reward and punishment, of Gan-Eden and Gehinnom, the closest we get to heaven and hell. Later biblical texts speak of Sheol, a place where the souls of the dead dwell in silence without sensory awareness. Only Samuel is ever described as leaving Sheol, conjured up to answer Saul’s question, and angry at the disturbance. Where does the soul go? The Bible tantalises us with only rare oblique allusions. Rabbinic tradition speaks of olam haba – the world to come, of which this world is the ante-room. Yet this is another ambiguous phrase. It can be understood as existing both in the present and in the future. The Bible understands that what matters is not death but life, seeing no need to explore a post-mortem existence. Silence is the only response.

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY One needs the news on for only a few minutes to hear of someone issuing a public apology, followed by a stream of analysis of it. Some feel it is rare for a modern public figure to apologise. I think rather the opposite. Football commentator Andy Gray apologised for comments he made if they caused offence, but was quick to point out it was not his fault they were broadcast – they were really only for the lads in the studio. Actress Hilary Swank said she deeply regretted attending a birthday party for the torture-loving Chechen president – but noted she could not be responsible for researching the human rights record of every person whose party she attended.

Rebekah Brooks apologised as she resigned from her position as chief executive of News International saying: “I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt, and I reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know.” Far from Elton John’s song Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, it seems to have become one of the easiest. The intentions behind it, however, seem
harder to analyse. Nick Smith, author of I Was Wrong, points out apologies cannot be designated to a proxy but must be serious, undertakings by the individuals concerned. Maimonides teaches that the first step of a true apology is to look to ourselves and see if we can admit in our hearts that we did wrong. The words can be simple as long as they are heartfelt and remorseful. Sincerity is also displayed through reparations. While not always possible, it helps if the apologiser can return something taken from another person, whether material possessions, dignity, pride or a good name. When there is no way to correct the hurt, asking how we can help to restore balance to the relationship is a great beginning. Now, who wants to tell Ken Livingstone or Sean Spicer?

Dear Nechama There are many elements to consider when looking for quality. For example, the carcass thickness and whether it has a solid panel in the back or on the top. Knock on the back of the carcass to see if it moves. Ideally, it should be 16 to 18mm thick. Look for solid hinges that don’t give when you apply pressure to an open door. Look for hinges that include the soft close element within them, rather than separate soft close gadgets. The most important element is the door, which makes up the majority of the cost of a kitchen. Two doors can look exactly the same but one could be solid wood painted and the other could be MDF painted or even vinyl wrapped MDF or chipboard. They are at opposite ends of the pricing spectrum.
Even with two painted doors you could find a significant price difference – some manufacturers paint only the outside of the doors and the number of layers of paint will also affect the price. Thinner doors may be less expensive, but thicker doors will last much longer. The brand will also make a difference and you might be paying a premium for the name. Panels can often add a substantial cost to your kitchen and may explain price differences. They have the same finish as the door and are added to the side of cabinets to give the kitchen a ‘quality look’. However they aren’t always necessary if the carcass coordinates with the door colour. You have to consider value for money and get the best for your budget. This may mean balancing doors, carcasses and panels to achieve the look you want.

WIN A PERSONALISED BOOK FOR YOUR CHILD! Jewish News and itsyourstory have teamed up to offer 10 lucky readers From A to Z, a wonderful photo-personalised alphabet book starring your child! Is your child starting school or nursery this year? If so mark this all-important milestone with a beautifully illustrated personalised alphabet book worth £20. Not only is it a fantastic teaching aid, which brings the alphabet to life by making them the star, it is also a perfect keepsake. The book is ideal for children who have not yet been taught their alphabet formally. Every letter is accompanied by a picture and a simple sentence that emphasises the sound, such as ‘Freddy’s Dinosaur is Daring and Dangerous’, ‘Oliver Octopus has Orange Socks’.
The child features in the illustrations and text on every page making it a fun and engaging read. Not only will your child learn how the letters sound and look, but they will also get to go on an adventure – meeting lots of animals, building a sandcastle and riding a rocket to the moon. It’s the perfect interactive read for young children as each illustration becomes a talking point. What are you painting a picture of? How many carriages are on the train? What colour is your yo-yo?

Community on its marks for marathon Sunday Last year’s Virgin Money London Marathon clashed with the second day of Pesach, meaning Jewish charities and organisations missed out on hundreds of thousands of pounds in fundraising due to yom yov. This year the community’s runners will be out in force again as they take on the 26.2 mile course for a variety of good causes. Emunah has seven runners taking part including a solicitor, accountant and architect. For David Bondt, 33, the charity is close to his heart. He says: “I was with my [late] grandma Irene when they opened the Beit Bondt building at Emunah’s Netivot Family Counselling and Day Care Centre. The challenge is a big commitment, I’ll be glad to finish and get my medal.” Roey Freilich has also been involved with Emunah for many years, and says: “I thought it was a good opportunity. This is my first marathon and it’s a lot tougher than I thought it would be.” Dovid Bitan confesses to not being a seasoned runner: “according to the training manuals I’m not really a runner… I’m keeping my friends company.” Their other four runners are Jonny Gould, 42, who says: “it keeps me fit and is a massive challenge”, Claire Gothelf, who’s running in memory of her father,
Harvey Gothelf, Marc Jackson, who also ran in Paris and Flora Frank, who has run 34 marathons to date and will also run under the Norwood banner. Donations to Team Emunah can be made at: http://emunah.org.uk/ donate/ Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Daniel Carmel-Brown, is running the marathon to mark 20 years at the charity. He says: “I’m dedicating this experience to the 1,400 colleagues and 3,000 volunteers who work tirelessly to support the Jewish community of London and the South East.” Other runners for them are Josh Domb, 27, who says: “When my grandma, Diane, went to live at Jewish Care’s Otto Schiff home last year, I was very keen to find a way to show my appreciation for everything they did for her. I’d always thought about running a marathon and this was a great opportunity to do it for an excellent charity.” Matt Blom, 26, says: “I’ve seen some of the great work they do, I’m just looking to finish and enjoy the atmosphere”, while Marcus Coatsworth, 31, always wanted to run a marathon, saying: “I promised myself that I would stop finding excuses when I got to 30. Running 26.2 miles is a daunting prospect
but it is time to achieve another of my life goals”. Their final runner, Yael Kohn, is travelling from Israel to take part. Jonny Phillips will be running his fifth London Marathon, as he looks to add to the £23,000 he’s already raised for Camp Simcha. The 43-year-old said: “The experience just keeps getting better. To know that I’m doing something I really enjoy and supporting an amazing charity elevates the whole marathon experience.” You can sponsor him at: http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ JonnyPhillips2017 Nightingale Hammerson’s Director of Operations, Andrew Leigh and Executive Assistant to the CEO, Cathy Buckingham, will be taking part to raise financial support for the charity. Andrew’s first attempt, while Cathy’s fifth, the latter said: “We’re amazed at the generosity of our friends and supporters of the charity, I really hope I can run my PB in London of 4.13. Sport / Redbridge revenge / Bloom’s Brighton promoted
We’re out for revenge! Redbridge want payback for controversial final defeat By Andrew Sherwood andrews@thejngroup.com @JewishNewsUK
Redbridge A manager Jon Jacobs says his side will be out for revenge on Sunday morning when they take on London Lions A in the Cyril Anekstein final. Jacobs, who’s also the club’s chairman, still feels aggrieved at how the 2013 final played out. Leading 2-0, they went on to lose the game 5-2, though were upset Lions goalkeeper Daniel Lipman was only shown a yellow and not red card when he brought down Adam Stolerman in the box to concede a penalty – viewing that as the major turning point of the game which led to the loss. Saying they ‘badly’ want to avenge that result, he believes he possesses a good enough quality of squad to right the wrongs of four years ago. He said: “We’re going to Wingate to win, we have enough quality in our squad all over the park to compete and impose our game on a talented Lions squad.” Also taking a sly dig at the Lions squad – and more pertinently the depth of it – he added, tongue-in-cheek: “We’re looking forward to meeting them on Sunday and I have a detailed dossier on their 200 players that they have available. We look forward to seeing Josh Kennet, Austin Lipman and
all their Saturday boys for the Maccabi League Cup final which they have richly contributed to.” Sunday’s match also gives them the opportunity to claim the first half of a league and cup double, with Jacobs saying: “This is the first of three finals for Redbridge which will define our season and will hopefully turn a good season into a great one. We’ve had a great run recently and are ready for the game against a very strong and respected opponent.” While Redbridge enjoy a six-point lead over the Lions in the table, having also played two games fewer, the sides have already played each other twice in the league this season, both recording a victory each. Redbridge were comfortable 5-1 winners back in October, but Lions edged a five-goal thriller in December, winning 3-2. Also hoping the match, between two of the powerhouses of Jewish football, will be a great advert for the league, he added: “It’s a showcase of some great individual talent on both sides. It’s an honour to be at Wingate, to be playing in the Cyril Anekstein final and I expect the boys to embrace the atmosphere and occasion.”

Bloomin’ marvellous for Brighton chairman Brighton & Hove Albion chairman Tony Bloom couldn’t contain his delight after he saw them secure promotion to the Premier League on Monday afternoon. The multi-millionaire, a Seagulls fan for 40 years, has ploughed around £250m of his own fortune into the club since 2009 – building their Amex stadium as well as investing in personnel and training facilities – and saw it all come to fruition when a 2-1 win over Wigan sealed their return to top-flight football for the first time since 1983. With promotion set to earn them around £200m, Bloom says the club will continue to invest, but it will be in moderation. He said: “We have to strengthen, that goes without saying, but we’re not looking to spend huge amounts. We’ll do things on a gradual basis as we have done. We have good players already, and we want to strengthen from that position.” Able to now keep hold of their best players – and reflecting on how important it was to do so last season, he said: “It was really important we kept together those main players who had gone so close last season. We

Sheffield Wednesday and the players were on the floor. I was on the floor. But I looked around and just said: ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and we will come back

from this and do it next season’. They’ve done it. It’s just an amazing performance. Words can’t describe what Chris Hughton [manager] and all the players have done this season. The teamwork, the camaraderie… it really is fantastic. “What will Brighton bring to the Premier League? A great city, a great fan base, an amazing stadium which will be sold out every game, and hopefully, on the pitch, we will do the city and our supporters proud.” Bloom – who played Maccabi League football with Hillgar – and Hughton could also be set to be granted freedom of the city, having been suggested by the leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, Warren Morgan, in recognition of the achievement which came 20 years after the club fought off relegation into non-league, potential liquidation, and were left homeless by the sale of the Goldstone Ground to property developers. One of Brighton’s two Israeli players, striker Tomer Hemed, took to twitter after Monday’s match to express his delight, saying: “We’re going to the Premier League! One of the best feelings in the world! Thanks god for everything”
