News / Berlin terror attack
Israeli tourist injured in Berlin terror attack An Israeli tourist was among the injured in Monday’s terror attack in the centre of the German capital. Twelve people were killed when a truck ploughed into a Christmas market near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. At least 48 people were seriously injured. The injured Israeli tourist was in the market with his wife, who is still missing. The husband is undergoing emergency treatement in hospital. Dr Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, said: “We are appalled at these senseless and despicable murders across Europe. “Our hearts are with the victims and their families, our deepest solidarity with the people and our strongest wishes for a full recovery to those injured in these barbaric attacks.” “Once again we have seen the bloody face of Islamist terrorism in our capitals and in our streets. “Let us not just hope that 2017 will be a better year, but let us join together to defeat this scourge and rid it from our societies.”
A firefighter at the scene of the attack
Chabad’s Yehuda Teichtal, a rabbi in Berlin’s official Jewish community, said he had been to the scene of the attack on Monday night with colleague Rabbi Shmuel Segal to see if they could help. Teichtal said plans for the annual public menorah lighting ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate would go ahead
as planned, albeit with higher security. Teichtal said he hoped “more people than ever” would come to the event. “We have to have zero-tolerance for terrorism and at the same time reach our hands out.” Berlin Jewish Community head Gideon Joffe said Berliners were proud of their tolerant and cosmopolitan city and would fight to keep it that way. He urged all Berliners to go to the Chabad candlelighting ceremony next Tuesday. The Central Council of Jews in Germany called the attack “disgusting” and added: “Our thoughts and actions must not be overcome by fear and terror… may the messages of our two holidays give us strength in these difficult hours.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and sent condolences to the families of the people killed and the German government. “This attack joins [other] reprehensible attacks; terror is spreading everywhere and can be stopped only if we fight it, and we will defeat it, but we will defeat it much quicker if all free nations under attack unite,” Netanyahu said. NEW JEWISH SCHOOL APPLICATION REJECTED Plans for a new Jewish secondary school in north-west London have been rejected. Barkai College saw its proposal turned down amid continuing concern over a shortage of places in the area. A report in the summer revealed a shortage of about 90 year-seven places in Jewish state schools in north-west London, but a “significant overprovision” in Redbridge. A spokesperson for Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS) said: “We have been exploring alternatives for ensuring sufficient provision

at Jewish secondary schools. While the decision of the DfE not to approve the free school application is a setback, it was only one of the options. “PaJeS has for some time been in ongoing discussions with the community’s schools to see if additional provision can be created through the expansion of our existing schools. In many ways, this is a far more economical alternative and will also help mitigate the shortage in teachers and educational resources.” PaJeS said it would be continuing discussions in January.

Tonge reported / News
Tonge investigated over Lords meeting Baroness Tonge is being investigated by the Commissioner for Standards in the House of Lords. The independent peer was suspended and subsequently quit the Liberal Democrats in October after chairing a meeting at which an audience member compared Israel to Islamic State and suggested Jews were responsible for the Holocaust. She is now the subject of an inquiry by the Commissioner for Standards over “alleged failure to act on personal honour and alleged breach of rules on House facilities”. The findings are expected to be published early next year. The Commissioner’s Office would not offer any further details about the probe and it is not known whether it is connected to the event she chaired, which was organ-
Tonge chaired a Palestine Return Centre event in the Lords
ised by the Palestine Return Centre. The event marked the launch of a campaign calling for an apology for the Balfour Declaration. She later insisted she didn’t hear much of the “rant” comparing Israel to Islamic State and claimed challenging such speakers only caused them to “go on and on”. A spokesperson for the All-
Party Parliamentary Group Against anti-Semitism, which spearheaded the investigation call, said: “Members were concerned about reports from the meeting and took appropriate action.” In 2012, Tonge claimed Israel would not exist forever in its present form – but remained a Lib Dem member until the latest controversy.

News / Rabbi controversy / Hate survey
Top rabbi hosts far-right leader The Chief Rabbi of Russia has been criticised after holding private talks with the head of Austria’s far right Freedom Party this week, Jewish News can reveal, writes Justin Cohen. Rabbi Berel Lazar agreed to the request to meet a delegation led by Heinz-Christian Strache at his office in Moscow, just two weeks after Jewish leaders breathed a sigh of relief when his party’s candidate suffered a narrow defeat in the country’s presidential election. A spokesman for the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FJCR), which the Chabad rabbi heads, insisted the meeting did not represent

a hechsher [kosher stamp] or “solidarity” but was seen as a “duty”. He told Jewish News: “Rabbi Lazar is ready to meet everyone and have dialogue
with everyone. He has met during career with Russian nationalists and seen good results. We believe talks are much better than pogroms.” But the decision to hold the meeting was branded “astonishing, bizarre, worrisome” by Vienna-based Rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister. He said: “Of course it is a hechsher; by meeting them he implies they are kosher. Furthermore is the breach of a taboo. The simple question is why and what for? If the intention is to gain any sort of gratefulness or political favouritism from fascists, then it is simply disgusting.” Arie Folger, the Chief Rabbi
of Vienna, said he was sure the meeting was “motivated by a desire to promote tolerance and understanding for Jews” but he couldn’t have been wellinformed about his guest. He claimed the Freedom Party is agitating against shechita in the state of Carinthia and a Chabad rabbi in Vienna urged followers to vote against the party. An FJCR spokesman said the rabbi hadn’t challenged Strache on his party’s position on immigration. He said the delegation was keen to stress the party was not anti-Semitic and were friends of Israel, while the rabbi stressed “he believes people have to live together”.
Hate crime a national problem, says survey Three-quarters of Britons think hate crime is a national problem and more than half think the situation is worse since the EU referendum, according to an ICM poll. The survey, commissioned by a campaign supported by Jewish and Muslim charities, also revealed almost three people in ten saying it was not a hate crime to call someone a name because of their race. While race crime did increase by 400 percent around the referendum, government figures show it was a blip, with the rate of incidents now back at 2015 levels. However, 58 per-
cent of respondents felt it had increased since Brexit. Speaking in support of the #BetterThanThat campaign, Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said: “We have some of the world’s strongest laws to protect people from hate crime and we are taking action to improve support for victims.”

Jewish representatives say an independent report published this week “trivialises antiSemitism,” after it found the National Union of Students was not institutionally racist. The report into culture and practices at the national student body, commissioned by the union’s president Malia Bouattia and undertaken by the Runnymede Trust, recommended that the NUS should improve
its understanding of racism, noting several problem areas. While broadly welcoming the report, however, the Union of Jewish Students took issue with some perceived omissions, as well as elements of the language used. UJS campaigns director Josh Nagli said: “Jewish students are likely to be disappointed because there seems to be a lack of
any in-depth examination of the challenges facing Jewish students.” The report’s authors note the “negative” media coverage of Bouattia’s groundbreaking election to president in April, which was “greeted with elation on the [NUS] conference floor” but which was met with headlines of “shock,” “controversy” and “antiSemitism”.

Terrror funding/ Conviction quashed / News
Cash clampdown on PA funding Britain has made major changes in funding for Palestine after a three-month freeze over concerns it is being used to aid terrorism. The Department for International Development (DIFD) said this week that although Britain would continue to fund the Palestinian Authority, in future aid would go “solely to health and education services, to meet the immediate needs of the Palestinian people and maximise value for money”. Funding would go only towards “the salaries of health and education public servants
on a vetted list” and “will no longer be used to support salaries of Palestinian Authority public servants in Gaza who have not been able to work”. DIFD said UK support to the PA — up to £25million this financial year — will help to pay the salaries of up to 30,000 teachers, doctors, nurses, midwives and other essential health and education public servants on a vetted list. The payments to the PA will now be made through an EU system which is checked by independent auditors; payments are additionally checked
through a strict vetting process which takes in a variety of different sanctions, including, says DIFD, “terrorism financing”. Chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council Simon Johnson said: “We welcome this sensible move by DIFD to concentrate aid where it is most needed.”
of the Zionist Federation, said: “The scandal of salaries for terrorists has been an issue the Zionist Federation has campaigned on for a long time... this is an important change in the UK’s attitude towards Palestinian aid and we hope it will contribute to a change in the PA’s attitude as well.”

Orthodox man’s rape conviction quashed The conviction of a strictlyOrthodox man for the kidnap, rape and false imprisonment of his ex-wife has been quashed on appeal, writes Jenni Frazer. The man, who cannot be named, was serving a 14-year prison sentence after his conviction at Snaresbrook Crown Court last July. But last week the Appeal Court ruled that there should be a retrial. This is now expected to take place at Snaresbrook early next year. The case made legal history as the first relating to rape to take place in a court without the presence of the complainant. The man’s ex-wife, who also cannot be named, had left the UK for Israel before the opening of the first trial, and actually withdrew her com-
Conservative Friends of Israel honorary president Lord Polak also praised the announcement, saying: “With the redirection of aid to education and health, the ability of the Palestinian Authority to abuse this funding to reward terror is significantly reduced.” Paul Charney, chairman
plaint against her ex-husband in a series of emails to the prosecution authorities. But the CPS said it felt there was “sufficient evidence” to proceed with the trial without the victim. Det Insp Neil Rawlinson of the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command said at the conclusion of the trial that the case marked “a momentous milestone for all victims of rape”. The man’s defence barrister, Jonathan Goldberg QC, told Jewish News: “As in any other case, a retrial means that a new judge will direct a new jury to approach the case with a completely new set of eyes.” The defence is due to make an application for the man to be freed on bail this week.

Charities’ learning curve Two British Jewish charities working on dementia care in eastern Europe say they learned as much from their first visits as they hoped to teach. World Jewish Relief and Jewish Care are working with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, but say they have seen carers there come up with innovative solutions themselves. The charities are running a series of seminars to support poorer Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, with funding for local Jewish organisations to employ people to deliver new dementia care services. However Gill Yentis, Jewish Care’s dementia practitioner,
said it had been a learning experience for the British charities, after she visited Kishinev with WJR to meet Isaac, a wheelchair user with huge mobility problems, and a 30-hour a week home-care worker. “I thought I was going there to model good practice the home-care worker could learn from me. But I found Isaac arranging flowers. She’d moved Isaac’s desk so he looked out of the window. She’d thought of every possible cognitive stimulation just by Googling it.” WJR’s Beth Saffer said she had seen “horrendous cases of discrimination of people with dementia”, adding: “It’s nice to think we’re doing something to cause a ripple of change.”

News / Jack Kagan mourned / ‘Anti-Semitism’ investigation / £25k playground
Defiant war hero Jack dies, aged 87 Photo by Yakir Zur
Jack Kagan, who inspired generations with his stories of fighting the Nazis, passed away this week aged 87. Kagan was the only known living member in the UK of the Bielski partisans, who hid out in eastern European forests and opposed Nazi invading forces during the war. The ex-resistance member was born in 1929 and lived in the eastern Polish town of Novogródek until he was 10, at which point his village was occupied. After being put into a ghetto and subjected to forced labour, Kagan escaped from his barracks in 1943 and joined the partisan group. Along with more than 1,200 men, women and children, the Bielski fighters lived and survived in the Naliboki forest as a community and managed to create synagogues, bakeries, a hospital and even an airstrip. Their story of resistance later became the central focus

of the film Defiance, starring Daniel Craig. After the war Jack moved to the UK, where he married his wife Barbara. The couple had had three children. In 2016 he was nominated in the Queen’s New Year Honours List and received the British Empire Medal (BEM). Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock said: “As the only surviving member of Bielski par-
tisans in the UK, Jack was an incredible man who inspired generations. We’ve lost a dear friend and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family.” The UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation said it was “deeply sad” that Jack passed away. It added: “He led an extraordinary life and made an invaluable contribution to the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission.”
A man whose European body represents ethnic minorities – except Jews – has been reported to police for anti-Semitic comments on Facebook. Jason Schumann’s website, the European Forum for Ethnic Minority Individuals, Communities and Organisations (known as Efemico), has been taken down after a stormy fight with the Campaign Against Antisemitism, (CAA) which has taken action against him. Efemico accused three organisations – the CAA, the Community Security Trust and Jewish Human Rights Watch – of harassing “innocent” individuals and threatened them with a Charity Commission investigation. In a Tweet from the Efemico account, Schu-
mann wrote: “Whilst antisemitism is wrong, anyone harassed by @CST_UK, @antisemitism or @jhrwatch, please contact us to take further.” Schumann recently told a Jewish Facebook user: “It is Jews who are the real nazis. [sic] No group of people more insidious, more evil, or more pernicious. An eternal curse upon them.” CAA investigators established Schumann was the website owner. Its chairman Gideon Falter said: “This incident shows the sophisticated techniques now being used against Jews, even to intimidate them from taking action against antiSemitism. “We have reported his anti-Semitic comment to the police.”
£25K AWARD FOR HASMONEAN Hasmonean Primary School has won a £25,000 grant to build a new playground after beating competition from other community award applicants around the country. The Hendon primary applied for the funding from the One Family Foundation to build a “playground fitness trail” after teachers and therapists warned “childhood obesity is of great concern”. The school hopes the new play area will particularly help children with special needs such as dyspraxia, autism and hypermobility, allowing them to build their strength and co-ordination. It said these children were currently “disadvan-
taged by a lack of equipment”. In its November application the school said: “At the moment the only activity available during playtime is football. “Dyspraxic children and frequently children with ADHD and ASD lack the co-ordination to play football. “The [new] play equipment will enable them to be more included during playtime as they will be more readily able to access it.” Headteacher Dr Alan Shaw said: “The transformation of our playground will help to improve pupils’ fitness, provide stimulation and aid inclusion as well as being fantastic fun!”

Tribute / Rabbi Lionel Blue: 1930 – 2016
Heartfelt tributes to ‘God’s best PR man’ Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of Britain’s first openlygay rabbi, Lionel Blue, following his death at the age of 86. Mourners at Western Cemetery in Cheshunt included Liberal Judaism’s Senior Rabbi Danny Rich and rabbis Dr Andrew Goldstein, Harry Jacobi and Mark Solomon, plus Liberal Judaism’s LGBTQI+ project manager, Surat-Shaan Knan. Rabbi Blue, described as “God’s best PR man in Britain”, shot to fame on BBC Radio 4’s Thought For The Day in the 1970s and stunned listeners when he announced he was gay – inspiring countless others to finally speak out. Maidenhead synagogue’s Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain said: “For several decades Lionel Blue became the indispensable Monday-morning wake-up call for millions in Britain, mixing religious insights with honesty and humour. “Through the popularity of his broadcasts and book, he made rabbis more human, Judaism more understandable, and faith in general more user-friendly.” Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, senior rabbi to Reform Judaism, said: “Lionel, as a teacher, writer and much-loved national broadcaster, transformed how Britain viewed Jews, Judaism and, most importantly, ourselves.”
Spiritual anchor and guide RABBI DANNY RICH SENIOR RABBI, LIBERAL JUDAISM
Rabbi Lionel Blue never held a formal post within Liberal Judaism but his death robs so many Liberal and Reform Jews, and indeed non-Jews too, of a personal spiritual anchor and guide. However large his congregation – and on Radio 4’s Thought for the Day, it was an impressive one – Lionel had the ability to persuade you, the listener, to think that he was talking to you alone in the privacy of his study or in your front room.
Despite being a teacher and mentor par excellence, he was humble enough to understand that the best of teachers learn most from their students and unplanned encounters. As my rabbinic colleagues gathered for his funeral and shivas this week, each one had his or her own reason to appreciate their own encounter with Lionel. Each experienced something deep and genuinely meaningful. In his passing, it is unlikely that we will see another of his ilk again. While Lionel and his memory belong to no single religious or other group, I am proud that he was both a Progressive Jew and a personal friend.
HE MADE US FEEL INCLUDED SURAT-SHAAN KNAN Rabbi Blue after receiving his OBE and, below, at recent anniversary celebrations for Leo Baeck College, where he was the first alumnus
Liberal Judaism’s Rabbi Charley Baginsky said: “Lionel Blue was a pioneering rabbi, teacher and mentor. He entertained the nation for decades with media appearances, but his contribution was more than entertainment. He had a unique ability to connect with people, speak from the heart and provide a strong dose of common sense. “On a personal level, as a lecturer at Leo Baeck College, Lionel was the archetypal rabbi’s rabbi – always there for us as individuals, helping us to better understand our own personal and spiritual journeys.” A post on the Facebook page of Beit Klal Yisrael, the Jewish community affiliated to Liberal Judaism, said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Rabbi Lionel Blue OBE. “Lionel was a wonderful and inspirational man who spoke with such wisdom and humour and whose words reached out far beyond just the Jewish community.”
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn paid personal tribute with a message on Twitter. He said: “Rabbi Lionel Blue was not only a respected rabbi, teacher and mentor for the Jewish community. “He was a wise and good-natured voice of reason for us all. His legacy will be that his common sense and great humour will remain in our thoughts.” Simon Johnson, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, commented: “His humorous, personal and insightful broadcasts were hugely popular and did much to expose the UK to Jewish thought and values. ” Benjamin Cohen, chief executive of PinkNews, said: “Rabbi Blue was an inspiration to many LGBT Jews and their family members. “Whenever he spoke about his own personal journey and the process of coming out, it always struck me how brave he was to live openly as a gay man in the 1960s, when homosexuality was still criminalised by law.”
LGBTQI+ MANAGER, LIBERAL JUDAISM
When those of us in the faith and LGBTQI+ communities think of Rabbi Lionel Blue, one word is always used: legend. He can claim that accolade for so many reasons – from his inspiring teaching at Leo Baeck College to the radio work that turned him into a household name. But for me, and so many others, he was the great Jewish LGBTQI+ pioneer.
As the first British rabbi to publicly come out as gay back in the 1970s, and to be so proud of being both gay and Jewish, he provided two sets of inspiration, the first being for the many of us struggling to come out and worrying about finding acceptance in our families and faith communities. The second, equally important and often overlooked, was to show us that there was a place for us for in the synagogue. Lionel’s personal example means a generation of LGBTQI+ people now feel included by Judaism.
Warmth, wit and wisdom BENJAMIN ELLIS TRUSTEE, KESHETUK
It’s Lionel’s voice we remember. The voice coming out of the radio on the way to work or school, filled with warmth, wit and wisdom. The honest voice, fully aware of his own flaws and willing to share his own experiences to inspire and help others. The selfdoubting voice, that wondered aloud whether he would have stood up to the
Nazis if they were coming for him. The voice that, for much of his life, was painfully ahead of its time. For much of his life, the world wasn’t ready for him. The shame heaped upon people like Lionel broke many. Lionel survived not by finding his way, but by creating a way, by paving a path that showed others how to live. When others were spurning people living with HIV, he ran retreats for those affected. Throughout life he searched for truth and in later life also found partnership and love.

News / Aleppo appeal / World round-up / Katsav released NEWS IN BRIEF
FORMER PRESIDENT FREE AFTER 5 YEARS
UJIA ACTS AFTER WEBSITE HACKED
Former president Moshed Katsav has been freed after serving five years of a seven-year sentence for sex crimes. An Israeli parole board which had previously twice rejected Katsav’s pleas accepted an appeal last week for his early release. Katsav’s lawyer Zion Amir said the Likud member burst into tears upon hearing the news.
A website run by a leading Israel advocacy group has been hacked, leading to a “breach of data”. UJIA said its Israel Experience online registration site had been broken into by hackers with “a limited list of names and email addresses being compromised”, but stressed “the site was immediately taken down and the police and CST informed”.

Israelis rush to help children caught up in Aleppo horror Israelis fed up with “standing idly by” have promised to help hundreds of thousands of Syrian children left stranded and starving after Russian and Syrian forces reduced Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city, to rubble. Organisers of the grassroots effort ‘Just Beyond the Border’ said they were bypassing Israeli government inaction and taking direct action. “Hundreds of thousands of children are now refugees, orphans, torn apart from the world they knew,” the group said. “They are just trying to survive the cold winter.” Using the Mimoona fundraising website, they have so far raised more than £200,000 from more than 5,300 individual donors, and have enlisted the help of Israeli Flying Aid to deliver blankets, medicine, sanitation kits and baby food. Organiser Yoav Bakshi Yeivin said: “As an Israeli child I grew up asking where the world was when we needed them most. As a Jew, I always

There is no nation that knows better than us how lethal apathy can be.” He said the world was “watching, considering its options,” but added: “As an Israeli, a Jew and a neighbour I can’t stand by.” Another organiser, Shivi Froman, said: “The reality in Syria is complicated for us as Israelis but inaction is not an option. We want to take children out of the equation because children are children and they deserve assistance irrespective of how complex the reality might be.” Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his government to find ways to extend medical assistance to Syrians injured in the latest round of fighting, especially those from Aleppo. He said: “I’ve asked the foreign ministry to seek ways to expand our medical assistance to civilian casualities of the tragedy, specifically in Aleppo, where we’re prepared to take in women, children and men if they’re not combatants.”

Residents back new Amona deal Residents of the Amona West Bank outpost have approved a last-minute deal to prevent a forceful evacuation by the Israeli government. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Naftali Bennett, the head of the rightwing Jewish Home Party, met Amona families to offer them a deal that would build 24 homes
on the same hilltop where they currently live and assist the other 16 families in finding homes nearby. The offer comes after residents voted 58-20 against a deal that would have seen about a dozen families relocated to another plot on the hill and the rest resettled nearby. The new deal would require the Supreme Court to give the Israeli government an extra month to prepare living spaces on the new plot, which Israel has declared abandoned by its previous Palestinian residents.
Charity heads deported The heads of two British Muslim charities have been refused entry to Israel for “security reasons”, despite being invited by an Israeli charity and despite one of the men having been awarded an OBE for his interfaith work. Maqsood Ahmed and Irfan Khan, two leaders of the international Muslim Hands charity, were held in cells at Ben-Gurion Airport overnight before being turned away by Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet.
They had been invited by the Abraham Fund Initiatives (TAFI) for a three-day programme of events, including lessons where Jewish students were to learn Arabic and Arab students were to learn Hebrew. The incident, reported by Ha’aretz, was queried by TAFI directors, who said they had consulted the Israeli foreign ministry’s European department beforehand, and been told there were no problems. They added they had never before had guests barred.

Lifestyle / The Jewish mastermind behind M&S’s Christmas
This isn’t just any Christmas ... There’s more than meets the eye to the M&S offering for the festive season. Alex Galbinski meets the expert who makes it happen
C
anadian-born Ira Dubin-sky is in charge of Christmas. And it’s not just any Christmas, but the M&S Christmas. So what is Dubinsky, a nice Jewish boy whose full title is head of marketing for Christmas, doing in such a role? He laughs and says: “Christmas is a very critical part Ira Dubinsky of the M&S calendar and, after I had done a number of other roles, they asked me to take it on. It’s really exciting.” He joined M&S in 2013 after completing an MBA in marketing at London Business School and has nearly 20 years’ experience of marketing and communications. Along with retail in general, it has been a difficult time for M&S recently. Dubinsky remains upbeat despite M&S announcing that it would close 30 UK clothes and homeware shops and convert 45 others into Simply Food branches after falling sales. Does he think M&S will survive? “Absolutely,” he affirms. “It’s a dynamic company; there are lots of really smart people from different backgrounds. I have huge confidence in our chief executive, Steve Rowe. I think he’s got the right vision.” I speak to him on the day Drapers reported new research suggesting more consumers will shop at M&S than any other retailer on the UK high street this Christmas. “That’s really welcome news. We’re always
an important destination for people at Christmas,” he says, adding cautiously, “but we have to have the right products at the right place at the right price and really engage with our customers. We don’t take anything for granted.” In the battle of the ads, it seems M&S might have trumped other department stores. Its #LoveMrs Claus offering features Santa’s glamorous wife, who saves the day for a young boy while channelling a Bond-style rescue (of hopes) and keeping the mystique of marriage alive. The M&S Christmas message, Dubinsky says, is about “love and family and togetherness and celebrating all of the special moments that we have in our lives and that are particularly important at Christmas”. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive both from colleagues inside the business and from customers as well as the industry,” says the 36-year-old, who lives in Walthamstow with his wife, the National Portrait Gallery’s head of corporate development, and their 15-month-old son. Customers have also voiced their approval on social media, he says, acknowledging that the advert was a new direction for the company. “In previous years, our advertising and marketing has been about our products and we’re very proud of them, but at Christmas we realised we needed to go a slightly different

The range of goodies on offer is a major part of the M&S appeal to the festive market
route and tell a little more of a warm story.” But whether it will translate into sales is the question on everyone’s lips. “With this type of campaign, where you tap into emotions and you try to resonate with people, it takes time to have an impact,” he says. “So far, things look good for us to have a good Christmas, but it’s too early to share any results.” Judaism is a “very important part” of his identity as a modern Progressive Jew, having grown up in the Dorshei Emet community in Montreal, and he now attends New London Synagogue on High Holy Days. While Dubinsky himself does not celebrate Christmas, he did stock up on M&S food for an early Chanukah party. For those who are honouring the festival, he says M&S food is often at the forefront of people’s minds. “We have an incredibly popular Christmas food ordering service, where you can get turkey and all the trimmings ready to go. “There are also some really lovely things people tend to gift from M&S, like gloves, scarves, cashmere jumpers and socks as well as puzzles, toys, books and beauty products.” His role is to ensure the customer experi-

ence is always on-message – from the TV advertising to window displays and product packaging, to the look and feel of the stores and the digital marketing campaigns. It involves much creative judgement and working with different agencies and stakeholders – “so there’s a lot of managing different opinions, critical paths and deadlines”, he acknowledges. So how does a British Christmas differ from a Canadian one? “Christmas has a special meaning about family and community here, more so than perhaps in North America or in other parts of Europe,” he says, citing the fact public transport shuts down in London on Christmas Day. “Religion aside, it’s the one time of year when you’re really supposed to be with your family and loved ones no matter what. The streets are quiet, and everyone’s inside, having their meal together and there’s something really nice about that.” Perhaps this season’s M&S advertising slogan, ‘Christmas with love’, is a perfect fit after all.

Campaigning for change / Special report
Israel’s quiet revolution Stephen Oryszczuk meets the co-founder of a new 11,000-strong group fighting for political change in Israel and the Palestinian territories
R
aluca Ganea is very small, unlike her ambitions. A 37-year Jaffa resident, she worked for Avaaz, the world’s biggest online activist network, but left to recreate something similar yet specific to Israel. Unashamedly progressive, political but not partisan, she wants to give others like her a voice, fighting the battles like-minded Israelis feel they need to fight. This new group, Zazim, is defining itself by its battles. One week, the community can be urging the government to provide running water to Palestinian villages in the West Bank, the next, campaigning against the promotion of a police chief found guilty of sexual offences. This “member-driven citizen movement” has found its voice – and it’s only 10 months old. Ganea is Zazim’s co-founder, and is in London to pick up an award, and to explain to [mainly young] British Jews what it is she does. “Zazim provides the platform and the community for committed Israeli citizens to organise for positive change,” says New Israel Fund chief executive Adam Ognall. “We’re proud to have helped them get off the ground.” He says Ganea is “that great mix of visionary
and practical that any good social change leader needs”, and she herself identifies “a thirst for campaigning… Many have been waiting for a voice. We help them come out of the closet”. The group has had mixed success. It fought the government’s decision to expand “one of Israel’s most polluting factories” in Haifa, and won. It fought against segregation of Arab and Jewish mothers in maternity wards, and went to court, which raised awareness. And it fought against the law, giving parliamentarians’ the right “to expel other parliamentarians for political reasons”, which was ultimately passed, but not without increased public scrutiny. Ganea explains that “the occupation hasn’t really been discussed in public since Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination, in1995, and the results can be seen today, with new laws trying to undermine the right of Arab citizens of Israel to vote and be elected”. The team’s first campaign was against a new civics textbook, issued and taught to all 16 to 18-year-olds in Israel, which “downplays the role and rights and minorities”. It was, she said, “an expression of how the political right and religious Zionists feel the state of Israel should
be run” . While Zazim’s work led to changed wording, “the essence remains unaltered”. Likewise, the fight against maternity ward segregation is making headway, with the recent announcement that one hospital has introduced a one-year rolling programme, training medical staff on ways and tools for preventing discrimination. Physicians for Human Rights, Israel’s foremost medical group, has backed both this and Zazim’s calls for drinking water in Palestinian villages. All these are examples of a bigger trend, Ganea says, and the time for action is now.
“Neutrality isn’t an option. Silence legitimises the occupation. There is no such thing as being neutral when it comes to big moral questions. You can’t hold millions under military law. Democracy and occupation don’t go together.” Has Zazim been criticised for its progressivism? “Not much, but we’re new, with 11,000 members. If we get 80,000, we’ll have one percent of the population. Then they’ll have to listen!”
Zazim members take issue with government-approved textbook on citizenship

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
How do we make the goodwill last? The coming days see the start of Chanukah, Christmas and the secular new year, bringing with it all the usual parties, presents and paraphernalia. The dulcet tones of Silent Night, Maoz Tzur and Auld Lang Syne will provide, if only for a few precious moments, a collective sense of wellbeing, happiness and calm that is rarely repeated throughout the rest of the year. As soon as the festive restpite clears, the dire state of international relations will once again rear its ugly head. There will be plenty to focus the mind in 2017 after the chaos and tragedy of the past 12 months. Russian influence continues to grow across eastern Europe and the Middle East while the United States seems increasingly irrelevant in these regions; Iran’s intervention in local conflicts has intensified; attempts to contain the fighting in Syria have repeatedly failed while ISIS remains a significant force; Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s farright Front National Party, could be the country’s next president. And Israel and the Palestinians are far from anything resembling common ground. Add to this turbulent backdrop bewilderment over Brexit, growing concerns over the Trump presidency and the ever-present threat of Islamic radicalisation and terror and the picture for 2017 looks less than rosy. Perhaps, over the testing months that lie ahead, the world’s politicians would be advised to cast their minds back to the festive spirit and remember how easy it can be to join hands with strangers and spread the spirit of goodwill. Well, we can always hope.

RUNNING AWAY MEANS THE BULLIES HAVE WON There certainly is anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, but the last thing Jewish Labour MPs like Luciana Berger (pictured) should do is to ‘run away’ like frightened schoolchildren, as suggested by your columnist Brian Gordon (Jewish News, 15 December). MPs are elected representatives and as such should be representing our interests and using their position to fight for issues that concern us.
Instead of ‘quitting en masse’ Jewish MPs from all parties should band together and fight every instance of anti-Semitism. They should also ensure there is adequate newspaper, TV and online coverage so that the general public is also aware of what is happening. The only way to defeat antiSemitism is to mount a concerted, strong and vociferous campaign against it. Running away simply

I wrote to the House of Lords standards committee about Baroness Jenny Tonge chairing an event on behalf of the Palestinian Return Centre in the House of Lords earlier this year, to launch the campaign calling for the United Kingdom to apologise for the Balfour Declaration. My complaint was subsequently looked at and it was decided there was indeed a case to answer. I am now awaiting decision on this matter. The point l would like to make to Jewish News readers is instead of going on Twitter or just jumping up and down in anger and frustration... do something!

SHECHITA STORIES DO NOT INVOLVE THE UK Leona Wieder rightly says the shackle-and-hoist position for shechita in South America has been condemned by the Israeli Rabbinate. She is also correct to point out the wide range of shechita in the US, some quite disappointing. Limited in her article is insight into shechita in the UK. Years ago, a UK government minister reported on ‘ritual slaughter’ in the UK, mentioning unsatisfactory practices. The late Dayan Berkovitz met the minister to see how the Beth Din could deal with problems. All the poor practices turned out to involve halal, not kosher, slaughter. Berkovitz asked why the report made no distinction and was told singling out halal might appear anti-Muslim. The point is shechita in the UK appears to be well regulated and the horror stories, while genuine, do not necessarily involve UK shechita. Perhaps we should read the section
in Samson Raphael Hirsch’s A Philosophy of Jewish Law and Observance’ on respect for the feelings and instincts of animals. This reminds us that Jewish law is lenient in rabbinical prohibitions on Shabbat and yom tov in the case of a suffering animal, the same as a non-seriously ill person. The Torah also commands us to allow the animals to share the shabbos day of rest ( Exodus 20.10).

APOLOGISTS FOR ODIOUS DONALD TRUMP To use the words of letter writer Isaac Cohen, I too am “saddened, upset and angry” – but, in my case, it is at the continuing diatribes being published in defence of the odious Donald Trump. Mr Cohen, and all the other apologists for Trump’s offensive rhetoric, seem to ignore the many recorded statements suggesting he not only racist but also someone who insults disabled people, belittles women, avoids taxes and even encourages violence. Deny he is racist until you are blue in the face but he has branded Mexicans rapists and Muslims terrorists. Throughout his campaign Trump enjoyed the vocal support of the Ku Klux Klan (who I’m sure Mr Cohen knows hate Jews alongside many other minorities).

The wrong direction I must be dense, or have been resident on another planet, but can readers enlighten me about a burning question that’s perplexed me since the start of the disgraceful refugee crisis. I am at a loss to understand why multitudes of refugees are making a beeline for Europe, facing so much suffering and untold rejection, when they should be heading for powerful oil-rich Arab states like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE,
Bahrain, Tunisia and others who have unlimited riches, land and resources that can be used to accommodate them? Why wouldn’t these fabulously rich oil-producing countries not welcome and offer a home to these refugees in the first place, given the fact that they all share the same religion? Wake up: meat is bad I’ve been pleased to see articles in the Jewish News about eating meat and the terrible cruelty involved. This needs a lot more coverage to make people aware. Everyone’s health benefits from either reducing or cutting out meat and, ultimately, animals will get a better deal too. The meat industry would like us all to remain ignorant. Simone Fields By email
Clarification: Last week’s letter headlined ‘The EU rules that make the refugee problem worse’ was written by Anthony Kerstein, not Sidney Sands. We apologise to both for this error.

Opinion
Good riddance to a year of relentless hostility ALEX BRUMMER CITY EDITOR, DAILY MAIL
T
he year 2016 is one many in the Jewish community would like to forget. Brexit is proving deeply divisive and, as the Remain camp likes to point out, it hasn’t even happened yet. The election of Donald Trump was as deep a shock to most American Jews, bastions of American liberalism, confronted with a leader potentially as spiteful and racist as the one portrayed in Philp Roth’s prophetic 2004 novel, The Plot Against America. Here at home, Jewish values and support for Israel came under vicious and brutal attack from internet trolls, with Labour’s Luciana Berger under siege. The anti-Israeli sentiments unleashed by Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party quickly transmogrified into traditional antiSemitic stereotypes. The old left-wing stager Ken Livingstone, once Corbyn’s foreign policy adviser, disgraced himself with his suggestion that Hitler was a Zionist. The LibDems found themselves in the ducking chair when the malignant anti-Zionist
Baroness Jenny Tonge chaired an event at the House of Lords populated by Holocaust deniers and other extremists – yet this did not stop the LibDems’ hero in the Richmond Park by-election, Sarah Olney, being photographed with Tonge, before the pictures mysteriously vanished from campaign literature. Working for a pro-Brexit paper, I, like many of my colleagues found the Leave vote a deeply uncomfortable personal experience. A close member of my family accused me of ‘ruining their children’s lives.’ I almost stopped going to shul on Shabbat rather than confront friends who all but accused me of adopting racist littleEnglander positions. The most ferocious attacks came when the Daily Mail, borrowing from the playwright Ibsen, ran its Enemies of the People headline above a story on the Appeal Court ruling that the Commons should have a say on invoking Article 50. A senior member of the judiciary, with whom I always had an amiable and civilised relationship, asked how I could work for such a paper. Rarely in my long life in journalism have I encountered such hostility. It has to be said that in a democracy the lawyers and judges should not regard themselves above criticism,
especially as citizens are granted such little insight into what factors form their views. Most are drawn from a privileged group of schools and universities and, in contrast to the US , there are no public hearings on their appointment. As for Brexit, my arguments have always been economic. The very idea I, as the son of refugees from Nazi Europe, would oppose giving shelter to immigrants fleeing from violence and poverty is anathema. My economic critique has long been based around the notion that the European Union is a dysfunctional club. Far from being the wonderful market of 500million people described with such enthusiasm by the Remain campaign, it has delivered acute economic stress and division. In Greece and Spain, youth unemployment has reached 50 percent. In Italy, it approaches 40 percent.
Belgium and France have been shown to be countries that have failed to confront terrorism, some of it aimed at Jews. Here in Britain, when it is pointed out that Britain’s economy was the fastest growing in the Western world in 2016, one is confronted with the retort it’s because Brexit has not happened. Divorce feels more comfortable – 2017 will see elections across Europe with right-wing parties with anti-Semitic roots in leading positions. We in Britain are fortunate that despite Brexit and the rise of extremism we have a government that fully recognises the contribution and importance of the Jewish community to economic and intellectual well-being, as Theresa May and Amber Rudd have shown. I wish Jewish News readers a prosperous, healthy and safe 2017.

THE IDEA THAT I, THE SON OF REFUGEES FROM NAZI EUROPE, WOULD OPPOSE SHELTER FOR IMMIGRANTS FLEEING WAR IS AN ANATHEMA
How our partnership helps those in urgent need PAUL ANTICONI
CHIEF EXECUTIVE, WORLD JEWISH RELIEF
T
he British Jewish community may be small, but it punches above its weight through the work of its communal organisations. We are blessed with many great charities; some are among the best in the country. As chief executives of two of the largest UK Jewish charities, we are always looking at ways of working with others for the benefit of the Jewish community and beyond. We must constantly learn and evolve to ensure we can provide quality care for the people we support. This is why World Jewish Relief and Jewish Care have joined forces on an ambitious programme to transform dementia care for Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union. The partnership, with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), brings together Jewish Care’s leading expertise as a social-care provider in the UK and World Jewish Relief’s 25 years of experience supporting vulnerable Jewish communities in Eastern Europe.
❝
WE HAVE SEEN HOW PARTNERSHIPS HAVE LED TO NEW KNOWLEDGE FOR OUR CHARITIES Although the past decade has seen increased awareness of dementia in the UK, the situation is drastically different there. Social and medical support is extremely limited and there is a lack of public knowledge about the condition. Many older people living with dementia are either excluded by society or withdraw from social activities due to stigma and embarrassm–ent. Jewish people enjoy longer and better quality lives thanks to the social care support provided by organisations like Jewish Care at home and World Jewish Relief abroad. But as people live longer, we are seeing more cases of dementia.
World Jewish Relief’s programmes in the former Soviet Union have tackled crippling poverty among the Jewish elderly, championed disability and provided medication to those with chronic health problems. Dementia affects people of all backgrounds and must form part of an holistic approach. Communities in the former Soviet Union need support to cope with dementia and Jewish Care’s expertise will enhance World Jewish Relief’s work with older people in the region. World Jewish Relief has funded Jewish Care staff to join it in planning and running seminars about dementia for homecare workers from Jewish community centres in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. The training teaches the skills needed to work with people living with dementia using a ‘person-centred’ approach, rather than treating someone merely as a patient with a diagnosis. Feedback from the 200 participants so far has been extremely positive, with demand for more training. Local ‘dementia champions’ will transform dementia care in Jewish communities and beyond. The learning has been two-way: UK teams have offered their

expertise and local staff have shared their ideas with us. We have also learned a lot about each other. As leaders of our respective organisations, our priority remains to ensure every pound we spend is on our core objectives. But through working together, we have seen that partnerships lead to new knowledge for our charities, opening up new ways of improving lives. Regardless of where we live, dementia poses similar challenges. Numbers are set to increase globally as life expectancy increases. Dementia overtook heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales last year. We are proud that through our partnership, we will transform how dementia is understood in the former Soviet Union, benefiting not only Jewish communities but wider society too. Eerie similarities with early 20th-century unravelling MAAJID NAWAZ FOUNDER, QUILLIAM
T
he tangled and deteriorating state of global security today is reminiscent of the early 20th century breakdown of the world order. On 28 June 1914 a 19-year-old Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip [pictured, inset] assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarejevo, triggering events that led to the Great War. On 19 December this year, a 22-year-old Muslim identitarian Mevlut Mert Altintas – who bears a striking resemblance to Princip – killed Andrey Karlov, Russia’s ambassador to Turkey. Turkey’s sensitive geographic location between Europe and the Middle East, her hostile relations with Assad’s regime, her
support for Syrian Arab and Islamist rebels there, her fight against Kurdish militants, her tense relationship with Russia, her membership of NATO and Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman delusions of grandeur all make Turkey the perfect place to attack for those desiring to spark the collapse of our world order. This coupled with rising identity-based polarisation across the world, and repeated random and unpredictable mass-casualty attacks – such as the Berlin truck attack that happened on the same day – make conditions ripe for those seeking to trigger a broader war. The similarities don’t end there. Ferdinand’s killer Princip was a radical, a member of Young Bosnians who were supported by the Yugoslav nationalist Black Hand. Likewise, Altintas was also radicalised. While it was his service as a Turkish policeman that facilitated how Altintas

managed to get so close to Ambassador Karlov, and explains his firearms training, it was his ideological outlook and Muslim sense of outrage that affected his actions. Video that has emerged after the killing shows the assassin chanting in Arabic, ”Allahu Akbar, we are the ones who pledged allegiance to Muhammad for Jihad, Allahu Akbar” and then in Turkish “Don’t forget Aleppo, Don’t forget Syria, I will not leave alive.” This was an act of terrorism, no doubt. Killing civilians for a political purpose to intimidate people into a change of policy, whether the killer was affiliated to a group or alone, is the basic definition of a terror attack. Shouting “Allah Akbar” does not necessitate jihadist group affiliation, but it certainly implies that Sunni Muslim emotions and identity politics were in the mix. From the video evidence, it is therefore near impossible to avoid the conclusion that this was a case of Islamist radicalisation that occurred inside the Turkish police. And though it is important to note that the radicalised Sunni Muslim assassin Altintas was also killed by other Sunni Muslims in the Turkish police, given his projihad sloganeering, it is near impossible – and in fact rather post-truth – to claim that the attack had “nothing to do with Islam”. It would be fairer to say that just as this had something to do with Aleppo, it had something to do with a radicalised version of Islam, too. One of the best ways to avoid potential trigger-events such as this being exploited by opportunist leaders to spark further conflict is for all sides to recognise how our own political biases inform our reactions. The left would do well to remember here that “Don’t forget Aleppo” are not the only words the assassin shouted. Likewise, the right should note that
pledging allegiance to “Muhammad’s jihad” is not the only thing he declared either. He said both. And by saying both, Altintas confirms that the radicalisation process involves four factors: grievances, recruiters, identity and ideology. To address radicalisation, we must address all four on a non-partisan basis. Over the last month I have been highly critical of Putin’s Syria policy. The death toll and humanitarian disaster of Aleppo is indeed tragic, while Putin is certainly a despot. But difficult times such as these make it even more incumbent on us not to forget our moral compass. We must not allow our support for Aleppo and our disdain for Putin to sway us into sounding sympathetic to terrorists killing diplomats, just because we don’t like their government’s policies. We didn’t appreciate the same being done after the 9/11 attacks and the 7/7 bombings in London and elsewhere, and Turkey doesn’t appreciate the same being done after she is attacked by Kurdish terrorist groups, despite her policy towards some Kurdish groups leaving much to be desired. With this in mind, all indications are that despite the eerie similarities between Princip and Altintas, we may well be spared a repeat of the Archduke Ferdinand scenario. Turkey’s relations with Russia were on the mend before this killing, and so far Russia seems to be reacting with calm. It is not assassinations in themselves that spark war, but the willingness of world leaders to exploit them. Thankfully, our leaders seem to understand that it’s not helpful for anyone to tempt a repeat of that early 20th century unravelling. But then, nobody thought Archduke Ferdinand’s death would result in such a global conflict either. And before we knew it the ‘civilised’ world had caused over 17 million deaths in that Great War.
What we’ll offer you
You will receive a great basic salary and open-ended commission structure, as well as: • Full in-house training programme • Friendly, fun and supportive working culture • 20 days holiday per year, plus bank holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur • Instead of just being a number, you’ll be a member of a small but determined team, with the ability to have a real impact and shape our business If you would like to join the Jewish News as a Sales Executive, please email your CV and covering letter to Sales Director, Russell Bahar – russellb@thejngroup.com Assassin Mevlut Mert Altinas stands over the body of Russian envoy Andrey Karlov

Michael’s bear necessities Francine Wolfisz speaks to We’re Going On A Bear Hunt author Michael Rosen about the TV version of his popular children’s tale
F
rom the swishy-swashy grass to the splash splosh of the river and squelch squerch of thick, oozy mud, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt has delighted a generation of youngsters since Michael Rosen’s beloved book was first published in 1989. Now the hit bedtime story has been adapted by the makers of The Snowman into a charming, 30-minute animated film, which airs on Channel 4 on Saturday night. Featuring the voices of Olivia Coleman, Pam Ferris and Mark Williams, the simple story revolves around siblings Stan, Katie, Rosie, Max and the baby, plus Rufus the dog, who decide to go on an adventure in search of bears. Rosen, a former children’s laureate and poet, described the animation by Lupus Films, which comprises 100,000 beautiful drawings, as “utterly amazing”. Having sold more than eight million copies worldwide and been translated into 18 languages, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt was awarded the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize the same year it was published and is still a bestseller more than 25 years later. But if you ask Rosen why the book has been so successful, he will modestly defer to illustrator Helen
Oxenbury, with whom he collaborated on the original book. “In one respect I’m the least qualified person to answer this,” jests Rosen, who grew up in a Jewish family and spent much of his childhood living in Pinner. “I’m utterly ashamed of this, but when I first saw Helen’s drawings, I had no idea what the pictures were to do with the story. “It was only when the book came out that I realised that in the greatest of children’s books, what actually happens is you start off with a situation where a parent is sitting with a child on his or her lap, they are sharing the book and the parent is saying the words, but the child is looking at the pictures. “The words don’t say anything about the drama that Helen has created. The child will say things like ‘teddy’, ‘dog’, or ‘grass’, and they begin to anticipate it, so they are the interpreters of the story and it’s a tremendous way of giving power to the child.” That said, the “pounding rhythm and repetition” of the words are signature Rosen, inspired by an American folk song he once heard and decided to adapt for performing at schools. Rosen, who turned 70 earlier this year, explains: “The thing that really caught me about We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is the repetition and how Above: Scenes from the new film based on Michael Rosen’s book; left, Rosen at work on the voice of the bear
if you do it with young children they learn it as they go along. “So even in a first performance you just start with ‘We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going to catch a big one’; however you do it, by about the third verse they know it. That’s very infectious. Anyone who performs wants things to be infectious, particularly with children.” It was during one of these lively performances that David Lloyd, head of Walker Books, approached Rosen and asked him to write the children’s book, teaming him up with Oxenbury for the illustrations. The talented father-of-five was again approached for his scriptwriting skills in this latest film adaptation, in which he voices the bear and for which he has tweaked the storyline to show a relationship between the children’s grandfather, who has recently passed away, and the animal. On this issue, co-director Joanna Harrison said at the film’s recent launch event: “One of the lines is ‘It’s OK to be sad’, and my godmother once said to me you can’t have happiness without sadness, the two go hand in hand. If you want happiness, you have to accept you are going to get sadness.” Call The Midwife actress Pam Ferris, who voices the character
of Grandma, adds: “It’s stating the obvious, but [as the book says] you can’t go over it, you can’t go under it, and in life there are just some things you have to go through – and grief is one of them, there’s no way round it.” Personal tragedy is something Rosen himself has experienced, following the death of his 18-year-old son Eddie, in 1999, from meningitis. His unexpected loss inspired him to write Carrying The Elephant: A Memoir of Love and Loss, as well as Michael Rosen’s Sad Book, both of which deal with bereavement. Yet for all its poignancy, We’re
Going On A Bear Hunt certainly ends on a happier note. “The story shows there is this danger – and you survive this danger,” he concludes. “So what you learn through fiction is that you do survive, there is a utopian, optimistic feeling at the heart of it, that you can survive, you can get through this stuff. And that’s what you get from it each time you read it or hear it. That’s the real power of the story.” We’re Going On A Bear Hunt airs on Channel 4 on Saturday (Christmas Eve) at 7.30pm.

ou can tell you’re in for a treat when your taxi arrives at the gates to your hotel, you drive down a long, pretty lane to a delightful main building – and there you find three hotel staff are waiting to greet you. And so we arrived in Barbados, probably my favourite Caribbean island because of its very British atmosphere, yet a million miles from actually being in Blighty. My affection was only going to get stronger with a stay at the Coral Reef Club on the west coast. Quite simply, it turned out to be one of our best hotel experiences. The property has a superb setting, wonderful food and service, plus a lovely colonial charm. It is as luxurious a hotel as you will find here, apart from the worldfamous Sandy Lane. It was the start of a relaxing week away from it all in glorious weather, with Barbados generally warm and sunny all year round. A nine-hour flight is nothing to complain about when you know what’s waiting for you. If you want the best beaches, head for the

west coast , which is the side to stay on. If you want friendly people, you will find them everywhere on the island. For those who prefer exploring a bit, the rugged east is well worth a drive around, including a stop at the attractive fishing village of Bathsheba. It boasts a dramatic coastline, nice restaurants and local rum shops. Back on the west coast, Holetown is a short stroll from the Coral Reef Club and here you can enjoy a bite to eat and a little shopping, including some top-end designer names. I was firmly in Mrs Silver’s good books for arranging this holiday, but we skipped a page when browsing at those designer prices. Barbados was a British colony up until 1966 and there are clues to this in numerous places. It’s always a bit odd spotting a red telephone box or post box when so far the UK; on the other hand, it can be somewhat comforting to be reminded of home. If you really want to push the boat out, Sandy Lane is not far away, in the heart of the west coast. We had lunch there and a tour and I can confirm it is luxury personified. I particularly like the story of the guest who complained the view from his balcony was slightly obscured by branches from a tree. The next morning, you could hear the electric saw sorting out that issue. Sandy Lane does not miss a trick, but obviously cannot afford to when you realise the number of celebrities who have stayed there over the years. The likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and David and Victoria Beckham are on that list. We were shown around the children’s club,
which will keep your kids busy and trouble-free for hours. The spa was like something you’d imagine in heaven. Mrs Silver questioned why I was suddenly walking a bit faster as she tried to obtain a price list. That massage can wait, dear. Good food is an important part of a holiday and another memorable dining experience as you head north can be found at the charming Cobblers Cove hotel. Here, the Camelot Restaurant is quite rightly award-winning. Going south, but still on the west coast, you will not find a juicier steak than that served at the Grille at the Hilton, while the Asian fare at Accra Beach Hotel is excellent. We spent the second half of our stay at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, which is also ideally located a few minutes’ walk from the Hilton, and really ticked all the boxes for what we needed next in our explorations. It boasts one of the best beaches on the island and wonderful staff, whose friendliness was typical of what to expect in Barbados . The property is a great choice because it is not top dollar, but still allows you to have a marvellous time. A short drive away is the Barbados capital, Bridgetown, and it’s worth spending a couple of hours walking off all that food. While my wife liked the duty-free shopping, I preferred the
historical sites, such as the Parliament Buildings, which dates back to the early 1870s. There is a small Jewish community these days in Barbados and its members are proud of their heritage. This is epitomised by their efforts to maintain a functioning shul – the Nidhe Israel Synagogue in Bridgetown, no ordinary place of worship, as it happens to be one of the oldest shuls in the Western Hemisphere and dates back to 1654. A short distance away in the area known reasonably enough as Trafalgar Square is a bronze statue of Admiral Lord Nelson. I was fascinated to learn it was erected in 1813, nearly 30 years before Nelson’s Column in London. The great man visited Barbados in 1805 (the year he died at the Battle of Trafalgar) and was a hero to many locals then for his battles against the French, who occupied some of the nearby Caribbean islands. I earned plenty of Brownie points from Mrs Silver for our holiday. To paraphrase the great Nelson himself, every (married) man should do his duty... and book for Barbados.

Ask Dr Ellie Our resident GP Ellie Cannon answers your questions...
Q My resolution for 2017
is to quit smoking for good. What's the best medicallyadvised way to do this?
This is great news for your health. From studies examining quitting smoking, we know that the best ways to quit are when you include personal support and some sort of nicotine replacement. There is tremendous power in having someone checking, supporting and guiding you, whether it is a pharmacist or a nurse in your local surgery: in fact you are four times more likely to quit with somebody's help. Quit smoking groups, which meet regularly in many areas, are also a good source of support. Search NHS Smoke Free for your local organisations.
Most local pharmacists also offer a Quit Smoking service, and combining this with attendance at a support group would be a good method to try. Many people do manage with willpower alone, but it is not proven to be the best way. E-cigarettes are now agreed by doctors to be a good way to help you to stop. The medical profession agrees they certainly have a place in helping people to stop smoking and do not carry the risks of smoking tobacco – which is really the problem part of the cigarette, rather than the nicotine. There are many supportive apps that you may prefer rather than face-to-face support, while quitting is also great news for your wallet – according to the latest NHS figures, the average smoker will save £1,696 a year from quitting. That’s a lot of spending money!
Q Should children take
vitamins? My four-year-old seems fussier than other kids and certainly doesn’t eat a lot of vegetables. But are vitamins worthwhile?
Yes, they are really worth it. Department of Health guidelines recommend all children aged up to five are given vitamin drops containing at least A, C and D, as it is tricky to get enough in their diets. Some foods, such as breakfast cereals and some drinks, are fortified, but rarely have enough to meet the requirements of a growing child. Vitamin D is particularly crucial as it is responsible for the metabolism of calcium and health of bones, so
Q I have received a letter
about aneurysm screening. I have never heard of this before. Should I go? Yes, you should. This is to check for an aortic aneurysm, which occurs when part of the huge blood vessel called the aorta in the abdomen slightly bulges and the wall stretches, making it prone to tearing. As time goes on, the bulge gets larger and the wall gets weaker (like an inflated balloon). Eventually, if there is any rise in pressure, the weak wall cannot withstand the strain and ruptures, causing massive internal bleeding. The chances of this are low for each person but it is normally a catastrophic event and fatal. In England and Wales, there are 6,000 deaths each year from torn aortic aneurysms. Four percent of men have an aortic
obviously vital for children because their bones are doing a lot of growing. Added to that, vitamin D is made in the skin when the sun shines. Given the lack of sunshine in the UK and our sensible use of sunscreen, it is pretty impossible for anyone to make enough vitamin D. On the topic of fussy eaters, which is a common complaint I hear from mums in clinic (and a particular fear of Jewish mothers of course), most ‘fussy eaters’ I meet are not fussy, just discerning. As we eat a vast array of food nowadays, we expect our children to do likewise, whereas a young child’s palate can be quite unimaginative. That's OK. To reassure yourself, write a list of items your child gets through: many mums find the list is surprisingly long and they can stop focusing on what he doesn’t eat but rather on what he does.
aneurysm but most of these will be small and not immediately life-threatening. They are more common in men, smokers, those with high blood pressure or those with a family history of aortic aneurysms. Most people do not know they have an aneurysm: this makes the condition one of the “silent killers”. Since aneurysms grow slowly, routine ultrasounds can be used to identify those at risk. The NHS AAA Screening Programme started in 2009 and offers screening to all men in their 65th year, most of whom will be reassured and discharged. Men with a small aneurysm will enter a surveillance programme to be monitored. Men over 65 who have not been previously diagnosed with an aneurysm can self-refer directly to the programme without going through their GP. The screening programme is thought to reduce death rates from aneurysms by almost 50 percent.

SEDRA - Vayeshev
New A-Gender The most illuminating time of year REBBETZIN DINA BRAWER
RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF Our forefather Jacob appears to be the perpetually ‘wandering Jew’. Forced to flee from his bloodthirsty brother and parents’ home to save his life, he spends a significant amount of time as a paying guest in his father-in-law Laban’s house, trying to survive constant deceit and trickery. This week’s parsha, Vayeshev, takes its name from the first word of the opening line. It reflects Jacob’s desire to return home and settle down to peace and quiet. But no sooner has he expressed the wish than a torrent of divinelyordained challenges arrives, beginning with the episode of Joseph and his brothers. Rashi informs us Jacob’s idea of a more tranquil life was not a state envisioned for him by God. Vayeshev makes me ponder the idea life as a Jew is not a quest for early retirement but a series of challenges for meaning, growth and betterment of oneself and community. Jacob’s story teaches me if my goal is a comfortable existence, then I had better wrap myself in cotton wool and never dream of achieving anything. Yisrael, our very name, denotes a relentless engagement and struggle that is inherent to the life of Am Yisrael. Chanukah is the perfect time to reflect on this. The Talmud compares the Jewish people to the olive, which needs to be squeezed to produce valuable oil. The self-sacrifice of the Maccabees, against all odds, assured our survival. One dreads to think what would have happened had they decided to give up and resign themselves to their fate.
Rabbi Naftali Schiff is CEO of Jewish Futures Trust
Chanukah lights are traditionally positioned in a window, to illuminate the darkness outside. This mitzvah speaks of our obligation to brighten the lives of those beyond the nucleus of our family and community. The Talmud explains the mitzvah of Chanukah can be fulfilled by one person lighting a candle on behalf of their household, but suggests the optimal fulfilment is for each individual to kindle their own light. This suggests that each individual, man or woman, is nonetheless encouraged to set aside some oil – a metaphor for the energy and passion

that fuels our activity – required to kindle their personal Chanukah light and illuminate the outside world. This a lofty ideal, but in practice most of us, in particular women, experience an ongoing tension in trying to balance the energy we devote to personal versus public spheres. The Talmudic sage Rava addresses this tension, saying: ‘’If one must choose between a house-light (for Shabbat) or a Chanukah light, the house-light takes priority’. While Rava speaks of a case where one’s monetary budget doesn’t stretch to buying oil for both Shabbat and Chanukah lights, we can apply his principle to situations where our time, energy and emotional resources are limited. In such cases our priority should be on the inner circle of our family. But having clear priorities to our family may not be enough. While work is permitted on Chanukah, women have the custom to abstain from domestic chores while the lights burn. According to the mystics, abstaining from work enables us to absorb the holi-

The Bible Says What?!
Progressively Speaking
What does the Torah teach us about the Messiah?
Why I’m glad pro-BDS Eran Cohen had the courage to stand
RABBI DANNY RICH For many, Christmas is a time of good tidings. But I’m afraid there’s bad news for Christians and some Jews too, in that the Torah itself says little about the concept of a messiah, an “anointed one” sent by God to usher in a time of peace and widespread worship of one God. It was only following later rabbinic literature that Jewish schools of thought, from the medieval period onward, affirmed the idea of a personal messiah with royal Davidic yichus (origins). This messiah would herald a national Jewish redemption, including the gathering and return of dispersed Jews to their ancient homeland and the building of the third Temple, prior to the more universal aspects. Progressive Judaism, from its inception in the 19th century, rejected this idea of a personal messiah and its Jewish, national aspirations. It advocated instead that God and humanity were in partnership to slowly better the world, the culmination of which would be the prophetic vision of, for example, Micah 4:3-4 whereby “…
they shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not take up sword against nation; they shall never again know war. But all shall sit under the grape vine or the fig tree with no one to disturb them.” The great chasm between Judaism and Christianity is about the messiahship of Jesus, although it is a simple matter for Judaism, answered by the facts on the ground. The real messiah will bring about the national and universal changes envisaged, whereas a “false” messiah – Jewish or otherwise – is disproved merely by failure. By this criteria, Jesus cannot be considered a messiah by any Jewish measure. As the Torah only hints at the concept of the messiah, perhaps the details of who, when and how of the messiah are best left to the fevered imaginations of Jews across the world!

BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSER I love being Jewish and want Jewish students to feel the same. At a recent UJS leadership training summit, I witnessed the very opposite of the mistreatment of students that I constantly see reported on media, posted mostly by non-students. At the event students listened to each other, accepted others hold different views and learnt from them. By fulfilling the value of machloket l’shem shemayim that disagreement should be for the sake of heaven, they put aggressive nonstudents to shame. They embraced that disagreement must be motivated by wanting to better ourselves
and understand others, and not to score short-term political points. As a rabbi I’ve seen, to my deep sorrow, tension on campus become so acute that BDS has moved from the political sphere to the pastoral. As part of the UJS presidential election, they debated the candidacy of pro-BDS supporter Eran Cohen. I am glad Eran had the courage to stand in this election, which I’m sure he knew he would lose. He enabled the 89 students who voted for him to have their views represented. This shows us that some Jewish students who support BDS do want to be involved in Jewish student life and need to be listened to – however hard that may be.
❝
WE ARE DRIVING OUR STUDENTS AWAY FROM MAINSTREAM JEWISH ACTIVITIES
There are an increasing number of students telling me they are turning away from involvement in JSocs, which they regard only as debating chambers and campaigning organisations. If people who are not students continue to attack Jewish students online and in person, then they will not want to be involved at all. This has to stop. We are driving our students away from mainstream Jewish activities. I’m glad Josh Holt will be the next UJS president and look forward to working closely with him. We should learn from Israel’s vibrant democracy, where views that many find unacceptable are represented and we should learn from our students here. It’s time to let Jewish students be Jewish students. Laura Janner-Klausner is senior rabbi to Reform Judaism

Dear Jo The Right to Rent law aims to deter those residing illegally in the UK from staying in the country. Get in touch with our expert, Steven Wayne: 020 8958 1118 info@benjaminstevens.co.uk Hi Nathalie I understand your dilemma and this very much depends on what you use your phone for and what you want to store on your device. People always ask what they can get for 1GB, so I hope you find my answer below insightful. You can have one of three memory options with iPhone 6s and 7s – 32GB, 128GB and 256GB. To put this into context; 32GB will give you 7,375 songs, or 19 films, or 55 TV shows, or 4,609 photos, or 983 apps – in other words, it’s probably perfect for an average user. The next option, 128GB, will give you 30,600 songs or 81 films, or 229 TV shows, or 19,125 photos or
4,080 apps and is meant for people who are likely to store a lot of photos or videos on their devices. On to 256 GB, and that’s ideal for anyone who requires a lot of memory or someone who just doesn’t know what the delete button looks like. Do remember: the fuller the memory on your device, the slower your iPhone will work, so we always advise freeing up as much space as possible by moving photos or videos into iCloud. RCUK doesn’t just sell mobile phones or provide mobile contracts – we are your A-Z telecoms provider and our friendly retail team are always happy to advise customers and show them how they can get the most from their devices.

Jewish News has two pairs of top-price tickets for the five-star drama This House at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End. The play delves deep into the secret world of the parliamentary Whips, who roll up their sleeves and go to often-farcical lengths to influence an unruly chorus of MPs within the Palace of Westminster. The action takes place as parliament stands poised between the February 1974 general election and the 1979 vote of no confidence in the government of James Callaghan. It is an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, as fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played and sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread. The cast includes Phil Daniels (Kevin Wicks in EastEnders), Kevin Doyle (DS John Wadsworth in Happy Valley and Joseph Molesley in Downton Abbey), Nathaniel Parker (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries), Steffan Rhodri (Dave Coaches in Gavin and Stacey) and Malcolm Sinclair (Silk, Midsomer Murders, Foyle’s War, Hustle). Premiered to universal acclaim at the National Theatre in 2012, This

Coach quits after ‘humiliating’ defeat
jewishnews.co.uk/topic/sport
RUBIN SERVES UP WITH ANDY MURRAY
Former junior Wimbledon champion Noah Rubin finished his two week offseason training by taking on Andy Murray. The 20-year-old, who won the title in 2014, lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. He said: “It was an incredible experience to compete against a fantastic player and great guy, who makes it extremely easy to learn from him.”
OLYMPIC-WINNING JACKET RAISES 80K
An Olympic team jacket worn by an Israeli judo bronze medalist was auctioned off for £80,000 at a fundraiser for children with disabilities. Ori Sasson, who won bronze in Rio, donated his team jacket to Shalva, an Israeli organisation for children with disabilities.
Rami Hadar quit as manager of Israeli basketball side Maccabi Tel Aviv after he admitted they suffered one of their most ‘humiliating’ defeats in recent years. Losing 83-58 at Red Star Belgrade, their third consecutive Euroleague loss, the defeat came against what’s regarded as one of the weaker teams in the competition. He said: “After the game in Belgrade – which was one of the club’s most humiliating in recent years, I asked the team’s management to be relieved from my position as head coach. This decision is made with a heavy heart and reflects my understanding of my responsibility for the latest results.”
Mighty Oaks stun lacklustre Lions Oakwood A moved up into second spot in the Premier Division as they claimed one of the results of the day, beating London Lions A 5-1. Leor Sidle scored twice, with Sam Cantor, Guy Helman and Jonny Quinn also on target. Joint-manager Daniel Kristall said: “We saved our best performance of the season until the end of the calendar year. I say it each week but when we have our full squad out, we are the best side in Jewish football. Hendon A will go into the New Year with a five-point lead, following their 4-0 win at Woodford Wanderers. Yehuda Korman scored a hat-trick, with Rocky Spitzer also on target. Brady ended a difficult first half of the season on a high as two goals from Sam Castle saw them win 2-0 at Camden Park. Redbridge B moved joint-top of the Division One table as Sam Sollosi and Brad Gayer scored in their 2-1 win at Oakwood B. They’re joined at the top by Finchley City as doubles from Jono Gaon and Oli Sade, coupled with Sam Leader’s strike, saw them beat Scrabble 5-2. Los Blancos continued their
recent run of good form as goals from Simon Moses, Tim Heynes and Adam Hersh saw them win 3-0 at Faithfold A. Division Two leaders L’Equipe opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the table after they won 4-0 at Catford & Bromley. Goals from Max Martin, Andy Smith, James Mandell and an own goal saw them become the first team to claim a tenth league win of the season. Third hosted second and it saw the former close to within a point of the latter as RC UK FC’s playermanager Avi Markiewicz netted in their 1-0 win over Temple Fortune. Mill Hill Dons are up to fourth spot after goals from Richard Hayim and Adam Isaacs saw them beat Boca Jewniors 2-0. A hat-trick from Lollu Hibbert, plus two goals from Gav Noe saw Real Hendon claim a 5-2 win at North London Raiders C. Hertswood Vale claimed their first league win of the season as goals from Danny Feuer, Josh Cohen and Bailey Snow saw them beat FC Team B 3-2.
Yoav Omer won gold in the boys’ title at the RS:X events at the Youth Sailing World Championships in Auckland. He said: “I can’t really describe how I feel, it’s an incredible feeling and I’m so happy to win.” Ido Bilik and Ofek Shalgi also secured medals in the 420 Class boys event.
Israel have been handed a tough draw if they’re to reach the finals of the UEFA U19 Championships for the first time. The Israelis were drawn in a qualifying group against holders France, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria in Group 5. The qualifiers will take place in March, with the group leaders advancing to next July’s finals in Georgia.
Maccabi Haifa’s youth team have been drawn against Borussia Dortmund in the play-off round of the UEFA Youth League. The Israelis will host the Germans in Haifa on 7 February, having finished top of their qualifying group, which included Shakhtyor Soligorsk and Dynamo Moscow. The winner of the one-off match will progress to the last 16 of the competition.

London Lions battled to a hard-fought victory in their last game of the year as they maintained their 100 percent winning start to the season with a 3-1 win over Knebworth. James Gershfield fired them ahead from the penalty spot on the half hour, scoring his 29th goal of the season after Jordan Marks was brought down in the box. However, they were pegged back level five minutes later when goalkeeper Reuben Rabstein made a rare error which allowed the home side to draw level. Rabstein was called into further action to prevent them falling behind, but just as the game seemed it was drifting towards a stalemate, Austin Lipman’s late double sealed the points. Manager Andy Landesberg said: “It was one of those days where things were not running
James Gershfield scored Lions’ opener
for us. It would have been easy to let our 100 percent record go, but the boys ground something out which means we go into 2017 with 15 wins from 15 games.”
SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR Continued from page 36 tremendous first half of the football season at Wycombe Wanderers, scoring 11 goals in 12 appearances. Israeli tennis is currently going through a barren spell, but there is one hope in 16-year-old Yishai Oliel, who won the junior boys’ title at the French Open. Finally, Hannah Knyazyeva-Minenko leapt into the record books by becoming the first Israeli female to win a medal at the European Athletic Championships. Winning silver in the triple jump , she also matched the best ever finish for an Israeli in an Olympic athlete competition , finishing in fifth, and is already a medal hope for the 2020 Olympics.
