Protests as Trump honours Pittsburgh massacre victims The Jewish world united in grief this week as the 11 shulgoers killed by a gunman who blamed Jews for “genocide” were laid to rest in Pittsburgh, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Armed with three handguns and a semi-automatic rifle, Robert Bowers, 46, walked into the Tree of Life synagogue through an open door last Saturday at 9.45am as a baby-naming service began.

Apparently angered by Jewish support for refugees, he opened fire, killing eight men and three women aged between 54 and 97. He then shot and wounded four SWAT team officers arriving at the scene, before finally being disabled 20 minutes later.

Bowers often used an alternative social media platform called Gab. The bio on his account – now suspended – read: “Jews are the children of Satan.”

On the morning of the attack, he had criticised the Jewish refugee aid group Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) and, in a chilling last post, said he could not “sit by and watch my people get slaughtered… Screw your optics, I’m going in”.

The victims included two brothers and a doctor who treated AIDS victims. It was later declared the deadliest attack against the Jewish community in American history. US President Donald Trump said later that if the synagogue had had armed guards inside, the congregants would not have been killed.

Bowers appeared in court this week after hospital treatment. The criminal complaint against him says he made statements “evincing an animus towards people of the Jewish faith”. According to the complaint, Bowers told an officer: “They’re committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews.”

He later repeated comments regarding genocide, his desire to kill Jewish people and that Jewish people needed to die, the complaint adds.

An online crowd-funding page started by an Iranian refugee with no links to the community had raised £728,000 by yesterday morning. A similar initiative by American Muslims notched up £141,000 in three days.

Visiting Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Trump and his family were booed by an estimated 2,000 protesters, including Jewish families, who claimed his rhetoric on immigrants and minorities had fuelled the recent increase in violence. Jewish leaders had encouraged Trump to stay at home, and the city’s mayor and governor refused to meet him.

In an open letter, progressive Jews from the Bend the Arc organisation said Trump’s words and policies had “emboldened a growing white nationalist movement”, and that he was not welcome until he fully denounced white nationalism.

HORROR, SHOCK AND ANGER AS UK MOURNS Britain’s political and religious leaders reacted in horror, shock and anger at the deadly shooting in Pittsburgh, as the Jewish community united in solidarity.

“Deeply shocked” Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Our thoughts are with the Jewish community in Pittsburgh and all those affected by this sickening and cowardly act.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan echoed the dismay, saying: “Synagogues and all places of worship should be sanctuaries. London stands with the congregation of the Tree of Life in

He walked through an open door and killed 11 Robert Bowers, the only suspect in last Saturday’s Pittsburgh attack, told police Jews were committing genocide and he wanted them all to die, according to an arrest document.

After killing 11 people and wounding two more in the Tree of Life synagogue, Bowers opened fire on police before being disabled. He was said to have told an officer while being treated “he wanted all Jews to die and also that they [Jews] were committing genocide to his people”.

Bowers was charged with 11 counts of criminal homicide, six counts of aggravated assault and 13 counts of ethnic intimidation in what has been called the deadliest attack on Jews in US history.

America’s latest mass shooting drew condemnation and expressions of sympathy from politicians and religious leaders and, with midterm elections close, also reignited a long-standing debate over guns.

Pope Francis led prayers for Pittsburgh last Sunday at the Vatican, saying: “In reality, all of us are wounded by this inhuman act of violence.” He prayed for God “to help us to extinguish the flames of

The dreadful reality of anti-Jewish terrorism has struck once more, leaving Jews dead and injured simply because they went to shul to pray on Shabbat.

This is what antisemitism looks like at its most hateful and most lethal.

As always after an attack like this, journalists ask Community Security Trust (CST) how we are going to react.

Does this change the situation for British Jews? Will we be reassessing our security as a response?

But the brutal truth is that the shooting in Pittsburgh did not tell us anything new: it merely confirms the threat we already know exists.

We have seen it before in France, Belgium, Denmark and the US, whether by neo-Nazis or jihadists.

In the UK, the police have stopped various plots in which would-be terrorists were planning to attack Jews. This is why CST does its work.

CST security operations were stepped up following Pittsburgh, mainly to reassure the UK Jewish community it is pro-

tected. This is an important response, even though there was no intelligence to suggest anybody is planning a similar attack in this country.

Our people were contacted and reminded of the importance of fulfilling their duties professionally and rigorously. We spoke to police and to local and national government, all of which expressed practical and moral support for the community.

Our volunteers know the risks, as do the police officers who rushed to the Etz Chaim congregation in Pittsburgh last Shabbat – four of whom were injured.

CST sees its role as facilitating Jewish life. We want British Jews to feel free to live their lives. Terrorists want the opposite: they want us too scared to go to shul, or to Jewish shops or events.

At the vigil held at JW3 earlier this week, speaker after speaker emphasised their determination to carry on doing the very things the terrorists hate. Their words were inspiring.

This kind of resilience must be central to how we respond as a community to the Pittsburgh shootings.

We will mourn and grieve, of course, but our way of life must continue.

CST will continue to play its part in ensuring this is the case.

Ex-shul member tells JW3 vigil: ‘Home won’t be the same again’ Jessica Weinberg Neiss is not a familiar name to British Jews or any part of UK society, writes Jenni Frazer But it was she who drew both applause and tears on Monday at a vigil at JW3 attended by hundreds of people, Jews and members of Christian, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities, to honour the 11 people murdered at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.

Despite a powerful line-up — Home Secretary Sajid Javid, London mayor Sadiq Khan, American ambassador to London Woody Johnson, the new Met Police deputy commissioner Sir Stephen House, Israeli ambassador Mark Regev, and more — it was Neiss whose words most touched the packed audience.

She grew up in Squirrel Hill and was batmitvah in the Tree of Life, where she attended Hebrew school. She described the neighbourhood as “a microcosm of what’s good in the world”, with 13 synagogues within five miles.

“I am a Pittsburgher. Squirrel Hill is where neighbours treat each other with respect and people of all races and creeds and backgrounds can live together peacefully,” she said.

Neiss, who moved with her family to London only two months ago, said British people had asked her if there were security guards at her synagogue. “My response has

been, what for?” she said. “I guess that’s going to have to change.”

The murderer had “violated” her home: “He has ripped open and defiled my sacred space and it will never be the same again,” she said. She had known three of the victims, but this was “a moot point. They could have been

you and they could have been me. They were Jews, and they were only murdered because they were Jewish.”

During the vigil, organised by the Board of Deputies in partnership with JW3, tribute was paid to Britain’s Community Security Trust (CST), whose chief executive, David

Delew, said the attack reflected “our worst fears” for UK Jews. He wished for a world with no need for CST, but Pittsburgh showed everyone needed to have a role in security.

Board president Marie van der Zyl opened the evening with a sombre message to Pittsburgh Jews of “love and solidarity”, but reminded her audience “what begins with the Jews never ends with the Jews”. Such an attack was “an attack on all of us”. Like many of the speakers, she used the word “defiance” to sum up people’s response to the murders, and said Pittsburgh was “a call to action” to work more closely with other communities.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said “indifference” needed to be avoided at all costs. One of the responses to the killings has been “Show Up for Shabbes”, a call to Jews worldwide to take part in their own synagogue services this weekend. “Let’s all go to shul next Shabbes”, Mirvis urged. “Nothing will keep us away.”

Home Secretary Javid said the attack was “calculated and unrepentant” but warned, “antisemitism does not come out of a vacuum”.

In Britain, it was “deeply shocking there is so much anxiety (about antisemitism). We are listening, we hear your concerns.” The government, a strong supporter of CST, “would be open to new ways of offering support”.

Pittsburgh was the latest in a worldwide string of antisemitic attacks, reminiscent of the massacre at the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue in Jerusalem in 2014. In both cases, the victims were attacked because they were Jewish.

LABOUR GROUP AXES ANTISEMITISM PLEDGE

Left-leaning members of the Southend Constituency Labour Party reportedly struck out of a motion deploring the Pittsburgh synagogue attack this week a pledge to fight antisemitism. The original motion stated “antisemitism exists in society and… all forms of antisemitism must be eradicated” and called on Labour “to lead the way in opposing antisemitism and fighting racism in all levels of society”. However, according to reports in The Red Roar, this was changed following debate at a constituency meeting on Tuesday to one that simply “commits to reach out to the local synagogue with our condolences”.

Councillors were contacted by Jewish News , but none had replied at time of publication.

A BEFITTING RESPONSE TO UNSPEAKABLE EVIL MICHAEL GOLDSTEIN PRESIDENT, THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE

I want to ask you to do something in response to the tragedy in Pittsburgh.

I spent last weekend on the United Synagogue Tribe trip to Poland, an educational trip for Year 12 students, visiting Warsaw, Lublin, Majdanek, Lizhensk, Lancut, Krakow and Auschwitz.

We retraced the tragedies that beset our brothers and sisters a little over 70 years ago, but also caught a glimpse of the rich culture and thriving religious life the same people experienced before the Holocaust destroyed it.

There were many questions in the group on how humans can subject each other to such horrors; why we, as Jews, were the victims, and how it is possible such mass murders could be repeated.

It was even more shocking, therefore, that after we had spent a wonderful Shabbat in Krakow where we ate, sang, danced and prayed, we heard the tragic news from Pittsburgh.

I have never been to Pittsburgh nor the Tree of Life Synagogue, but we cried for them because they are family.

As Jews, we are not just bound by a common religion. Our heritage dictates we are one family. Antisemites will never understand this. They can hate us but we will never go away. The past few days emphasise that you can try to erase us from the face of the earth but we will come back stronger.

It may not be Pesach time but we have been singing Vehi She’amda: each generation they may try to destroy us but the Almighty is there to support us and we will get stronger.

With this in mind, I invite you to join me in a show of strength this Shabbat: come to shul. As the Chief Rabbi says, the more hatred we face, the more relentless our pursuit of peace.

So, wherever and whatever you are, join your fellow Jews in shul.

We are blessed by CST and supportive police forces. Take the opportunity to thank them for what they do, take time to understand the security protocols in your synagogue and, if you are able, take part in security training.

Melvin was often the first to arrive at the synagogue and the last to leave.

Fellow members of the congregation said he was a kind man and a pillar of the shul, filling just about every role except rabbi. Friend Myron Snider called Melvin, a retired accountant, “unfailingly generous”. He added: “He and I used to tell jokes to each other. They were clean. Most of the time. I won’t say all the time.”

Friend Law Claus remembered Jerry, a personal physician, as more than a doctor for him and his family for the past three decades. “He was a trusted confidant and healer,” he wrote in an email to his former

co-workers. He said Jerry had an uplifting demeanour and would provide wise counsel. “He could be counted on to provide sage advice whenever he was consulted on medical matters, usually providing that advice with a touch of genuine humour,” Claus added.

Joyce and her late husband, Stephen, were intellectual powerhouses, but those who knew them say they were the kind of people who used that intellect to help others. The 74-year-old spent most of her career at the University of Pittsburgh, retiring in 2008 from her job as a researcher looking at learning in the classroom and in museums.

Richard was a popular and devoted member of the shul, going every Shabbat morning without fail. He was preparing to begin a new chapter in his life. The dentist, who did charity work – seeing patients who could not afford dental care – was set to retire in the next few months.

They died together in the shul where they married more than 60 years ago.

A neighbour told CNN they were the “sweetest people you could imagine.

They were the sort of people who regularly stepped up to help in their small neighbourhood and in the Jewish community”.

The oldest victim, Rose was a muchloved member of the shul, attending services with her daughter Andrea, who was injured in the attack. The mother of three children, with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Rose proudly cooked family meals for Jewish holidays.

“Irving greeted shul-goers and visitors with a warm smile and friendly handshake,” Tree of Life president Barton Schachter told CNN. “He was a guy that, when you walked in, he was the first person that would meet you and help you find a seat. He liked to make sure you knew where you were in the prayer book. He felt it was his duty.”

RICKMAN TO BE NEW ORT BOSS IN THE UK

The executive director of Mitzvah Day is to become chief executive of the UK branch of ORT, the Jewish educational organisation.

Dan Rickman, previously head of fundraising at Magen David Adom, will take over from Adam Overlander-Kaye, who is moving to lead fundraising at Jewish Care.

After three years at Mitzvah Day, Rickman said he would continue to don the green T-shirt every November, after the charity celebrates its tenth anniversary next month.

Mitzvah Day founder Laura Marks said the charity was now moving into “the next phase of its life”.

SNP MAN SUSPENDED IN ‘ANTISEMITIC’ ROW

A blogger has had his SNP membership suspended following the publication of a post described as “vile” and “antisemitic”. The blog was aimed towards GMB organiser Rhea Wolfson and included references to Hitler “accusing ‘the Jew’ of gradually assuming leadership of the trade union movement”.

The Scottish Labour Party and the GMB wrote to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon calling for an investigation. An SNP spokesman said: “A complaint has been passed to the disciplinary committee and the individual has been suspended.”

35% say Corbyn only deals with terrorists Just one in five Britons believe Jeremy Corbyn has worked to deliver peace in the Middle East, while more than a third say he seems only interested in talking to terrorists, according to a damning new poll.

Respondents were asked to rate contrasting statements about the Labour leader’s positions on Israel-Palestine for a BICOM/ Populus survey.

Of 2,035 people polled, 19 percent agreed with the statement, “Jeremy Corbyn has worked hard to deliver peace between Israel and Palestinians”.

Meanwhile, 35 percent agree he “only seems interested in talking to those organisations deemed to be terrorists by the UK Government, EU and US State Department”.

The Labour leader has been criticised for inviting members of Hamas and Hezbollah to Parliament, referring to them as his ‘friends’.

Both are considered, in part or in full, as being terror groups by the UK, US and EU. Amid the Labour antisemitism row, the survey also revealed that 38 percent of Brits think the Labour leader’s “actions and past history point to him being antisemitic”.

However, 25 percent of people agreed that Corbyn “is a committed campaigner against racism of all kinds including antisemitism”.

This comes after Jewish News and the Jewish Leadership Council commissioned a ComRes poll in July in which a third of Britons were found to believe Margaret Hodge was right to label Jeremy Corbyn an antisemite, over his handling of the party’s row.

On questions of Israel and Palestine, Sorene said the numbers were “largely unchanged”.

Some 48 percent of respondents “do not support boycotts of Israel and find it difficult to understand how others do given everything else that is going on in the world”, while 14 percent of those polled said they would support BDS, a rise of three percent.

RABBIS’ DISMAY AT AFFILIATION TO JVL Leaders of two United Synagogue communities expressed “dismay and strong opposition” after their local Labour party affiliated to Jewish Voice for Labour.

Senior members of Muswell Hill and Highgate shuls, including two rabbis, undersigned a letter this week, outlining disappointment at Hornsey and Wood Green Constituency Labour party (CLP)’s recent move.

Some 50 members of the CLP voted for affiliation, with 29 against and 13 abstentions, last week, despite opposition from community groups.

Jewish Voice for Labour is a vocal opponent of the party’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, and held a counter-demonstration to the Enough is Enough rally against Labour antisemitism.

In the letter, addressed to MP Catherine West and Celia Dignan, Chair of the CLP, signatories cite concerns over JVL, because

they “opposed the adoption of the IHRA definition by the party and has given support to individuals who are no longer in the party due to their repeated offensive statements”.

They accuse the group of having “consistently downplayed and in certain circumstances denied antisemitism” while branding claims of Jew-hate as being part of a “smear of witch hunt”.

Calling the affiliation “reckless and irresponsible”, they fear that “the time has passed” for dialogue to resolve the problems.

One of the distinguishing factors of the First World War compared to previous conflicts was the all-encompassing nature of the fighting.

Millions of men were called to arms and women were also asked to step up and serve.

Female military nursing units were formed in the decades before the First World War, but like all areas of female employment those units were expanded and bolstered by demands.

Jewish women were just as keen as their non-Jewish peers to ‘do their bit’ and help the war effort. One of those who volunteered to serve was Emily Hartman, a single woman from a good family, born in Shef-

field in 1895. She joined the join the Voluntary Aid Detachments and served in a military hospital in Manchester, before being transferred to another military hospital in Bermondsey.

Her work brought her into contact with many sick men and in October 1918 she contracted influenza while serving at the hospital. The flu became pneumonia and on 20 October she died from the illness.

Emily is buried in Eccesfield Cemetery Sheffield. She is a casualty of the war due to her active service.

She may not have served on the frontline but her contribution still led to sacrifice and should be remembered.

Rabbis could be asked for donor consent

Rabbis may be asked whether they agree to their congregants’ organs being donated when they die, as part of the government’s plans to smooth the transition to an opt-out organ donation system.

The added reassurance was detailed in a minister’s letter to the Board of Deputies, to allay concerns about the move to a system whereby deceased people will be deemed to have consented unless they have opted out.

Minister for Mental Health Jackie DoylePrice said families and faith leaders could be approached by NHS staff, and that the faith of the deceased “will be respected”.

She said there would be an option on the Organ Donor Register to allow people to state their decision to donate organs is contingent upon their faith being respected and adhered to in all respects.

“To respect these wishes the deceased’s family and, where requested, faith leader should be consulted to determine whether organ donation is a possibility for them and to discuss how donation can proceed while ensuring religious obligations are observed,” she said.

FAR-RIGHT MEETINGS ON AUSCHWITZ TRIP

The British-born head of a Holocaust charity that sponsored a US Congressman’s trip to Auschwitz has criticised him for taking part in far-right meetings. Steve King met members of the Freedom Party in Austria, founded by a former Nazi SS officer, and gave an interview to Unzensuriert, which is linked with the party. The Iowa politician’s trip to Poland was sponsored by From the Depths, run by Jonny Daniels.

“It’s been quite shocking to me on a personal level,” Daniels said. While his group had paid for King’s trip to Poland, it had not funded his travel to Austria and was unaware of what he was doing there, he added.

GERMANY HONOURS ISRAELI CHARITY An Israeli humanitarian aid group is to be given one of Germany’s highest honours by Angela Merkel for its work helping refugees.

IsraAID, which has operated in Germany since 2015, will receive the Integration Award on Monday for its Brückenbau (Bridge-building) project, giving psychological support in Arabic for refugee women living in shelters. The refugees IsraAID helps are typically Syrian, Iraqi and Afghan, in a project run in partnership with the Central Welfare Board of Jews in Germany.

Germany opened its doors to one million asylum seekers and refugees at the height of the Syrian crisis.

Jewish women ‘less charitable’ than men Women in the Jewish community give to fewer charities than men and tend to give less, according to research released by World Jewish Relief (WJR).

Results from the survey of 750 British Jews commissioned by the charity show just over one in 10 women have given £1,000 or more, compared with almost one in five men.

The study by Survation found that Jewish women are more likely to give smaller amounts of less than £50, with 11 percent having hit four figures. They also have a narrower focus, with more than half giving to four or fewer causes.

The numbers alone may not tell the full story, said WJR’s chief executive, Paul Anticoni, because “some donations given to us on behalf of a family are made by the man”.

He said: “In our experi-

ence, our supporters are fairly balanced between men and women, with men making up a slight majority of our donors…

We have found that women

in our community are as generous with their time, advice and donations and we value them highly both as board members, staff, supporters

and volunteers.”

The results showed that Jewish women were nine percent more likely than men to be motivated by religious responsibility in their decision to give, and one in three are likely to give to charities supporting vulnerable women, compared with one in five men.

Women are also more likely to choose not to specify how much they have donated in the past, and while four in five women give to Israel-related causes, fewer than two-thirds of men do the same. Men are more than twice as likely not to have donated at all.

The gender differences uncovered by WJR would appear to be at odds with earlier research into charitable giving in the UK Jewish community.

An extensive 2016 report from the Institute of Jewish Policy Research (JPR) found

that age was the most important predictor of charitable generosity (giving according to one’s means) with older people more generous than younger people.

Income and Jewish identity (observance, socialisation and cultural practice) were also important, according to the JPR authors, but gender “had a far smaller impact”.

WJR said its new initiative – Women of World Jewish Relief – is aimed at “encouraging women of all ages to proactively engage in the charity’s work, give according to their means and encourage their friends and family to do the same”.

Launched this month, it seeks to demonstrate “the vulnerability of many of the women supported by WJR” and show how British Jewish women can “reach across borders to connect with women in all parts of the world”.

The Charities Aid Foundation’s annual survey reliably and repeatedly informs us that across the UK more women than men are engaging in charitable activities. This made our survey results all the more staggering, suggesting that women in our community tend to give to fewer charities and tend to give less.

I’m absolutely convinced that there

is no gender-based generosity gap in UK Jewry. From both my personal experience and from World Jewish Relief’s, women are just as generous as men both in terms of time and donations. Our database shows that women are making up an increasing percentage of donations, to the point where the sexes give in almost equal numbers.

So how has this survey of the community created such a surprising outcome? Could the skew be the result of stereotypically male braggadocio when faced with a survey on charitable giving: “Oh yes, of course I give to tens

of charities and of course the amount must total in the £1000s.” Could it be in the male psyche to overinflate one’s giving habits? Quite possibly.

Or are Jewish households more traditional than the rest of the UK? Across the country, men have habitually run household finances and held the cheque books. I wonder whether our community is just catching up now in terms of a greater equality as to who nominates the charity to give to and who writes the cheques. Additionally, a more prosaic factor is that in many Jewish households, men are more

likely to be higher-rate taxpayers and can therefore gain the associated tax efficiencies of charitable giving.

Another finding of the survey was that one area of Jewish giving where women gave significantly more than men was supporting vulnerable women. Unsurprising perhaps, but a reminder that personal affinity and connection with the cause are key drivers of all charitable giving.

As such, I’d love even more women to support World Jewish Relief’s renewed focus on supporting the world’s most vulnerable women.

Gallery to sell 700 art pieces The Ben Uri Gallery and Museum is to sell off 700 artworks as part of a strategic pivot into the world of research and mental health.

Announcing the move, chairman David Glasser said the decision to “redefine” the art collection was made to remain independent, explaining that the alternative was to merge with a university or other institution.

The sell-off, which represents roughly half the gallery’s collection, will begin at Sotheby’s auction house next month, with the pieces representing 10 percent of the insti-

tution’s total insurance value.

Selling the artwork will allow the gallery and museum to extend its involvement in researching the contribution of immigrants to British visual arts since 1900 and to concentrate on its work using art as dementia therapy.

Glasser said art not sold would be given “free of charge” as intermuseum or community gift transfers, “selected on the basis that they – unlike Ben Uri – will be able to generate meaningful public benefit from them”. He added: “The majority of the works identified

for new homes have rarely been exhibited.”

Ben Uri was founded 103 years ago in the “Jewish ghetto” of Whitechapel and was the cornerstone of Jewish cultural activity in London until the late 1970s. In 1984, it sold one of its crown jewels – Merry-Go-Round by Mark Gertler – to the Tate. In 1995, the gallery lost its home, after the synagogue housing it was sold, and a new board of trustees took over in 2000.

A year later, the charity found temporary accommodation in a rented gallery in St John’s Wood,

but Glasser said now was the right time to redefine its future, adding that “the charity’s long-term value would be best served by redefining our public engagement and consolidating resources”.

He added “this could be achieved either through a strategic merger, most likely with a university, or alternatively, independently concentrating on three core areas of focus”, including Jewish and other immigrant contribution to British visual arts since 1900, a “redefined collection,” and work on arts and dementia interventions.

£1.7m boost for school trips to Bergen-Belsen The UK Government has allocated £1.7million to fund school trips to Bergen-Belsen until April – one week after the Home Office said it would give charities like the Anne Frank Trust £1.5m to tackle hate.

The Treasury said it made the one-off fund available ahead of the 75th anniversary of Bergen-Belsen’s liberation in 2020.

The money will be given to the Department for Education, with organisations specialising in Holocaust education able to apply for funds to support projects in schools and visits to the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany.

“Visits would be part of pupils’ education on the horrors that took place during the Holocaust,” said a Treasury spokesman. “Projects and visits will be delivered by the charities themselves.”

Gaza rockets injure six Israeli jets have struck more than 80 Hamas terror targets in Gaza after dozens of rockets were fired from the coastal strip at civilian communities in southern Israel.

Nearly 40 rockets were fired at southern Israel from Gaza last weekend, triggering dozens of Code Red rocket alert sirens in the communities, according to the Israel Defence Forces.

The Iron Dome missile defence system intercepted 17 of the rockets fired. Two other rockets landed inside Gaza, and the rest of the rockets landed in open areas in Israel, injuring six Israelis.

Among targets struck by Israel’s Air Force were a building that served as Hamas’ general security headquarters and several observation posts.

Islamic Jihad in a statement issued last Saturday claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, Ynet reported.

The hate is beyond us – our response is not

None of us can imagine the hate that inspires a man to walk into a place of worship and shoot dead all he can because he sees Jews as facilitating the ‘genocide’ of white Americans by supporting refugees.

It’s beyond us, but the response is not. Just as the best response to hate is to love, and the best response to terror is not to fear, so too the best response to an attack on a people and a religion is to show that they’re not going anywhere.

That is what #ShowUpForShabbat is all about.

It grew organically from grief, American Jews pledging in the aftermath of Pittsburgh to go to shul on Shabbat, to fill the synagogues as a show of defiance.

That’s exactly what we’re going to do here in the UK. We’re voting with our feet.

If this is an attempt to send Jews fleeing for the hills, it will be met with a steady stance, a solidity that says ‘no chance.’ That’s what ‘Je Suis Juif’ was all about. That’s what the Kippah March in Berlin was all about. Cower? Not today, thanks. Run and hide? You obviously don’t know much about Jews.

When attacked we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and square up to those who mean us harm. Jews joining from around the world, standing as one. It’s a steadfastness that those who hate us underestimate, or simply don’t understand. It’s not by chance that we’re still here after thousands of years as target practice.

By filling our shuls this Shabbat, we’re not just countering the killer – we’re countering the motivations of the killer, reaffirming our unity, healing together and sending a message of support to Jews in Pittsburgh and around the world.

This act of hate will not be forgotten, nor will rhetoric that fuels hate of any minority be forgiven. It will be met with defiance, as hate always is.

Those worshippers in Pittsburgh may have felt helpless as the bullets flew, but the Jewish people are not.

Giving plague victims aspirin So, Rabbi Danny Rich believes ‘the Jewish community risks being accused of desiring regime change in the Labour Party’. Such blanket attributions to a whole nation, race or religious denomination are the stock-in-trade of racists and if anyone should seek to accuse all of us in this way. No doubt he will discover the evidence and share it.

That said, he is still wide of the mark. The time is long past since Jeremy Corbyn was seen as a lone Svengali casting his malevolent spell over a noble political party.

Labour has been infiltrated root and branch by the extreme left, and antisemitism is no longer the main issue. The disgusting baiting

of Shaun Bailey, the Tory candidate for the 2020 London Mayoral elections, by some members of Momentum has shown them to be strident general-purpose racists.

The notion that regime change would cure Labour of racism is tantamount to giving a victim of bubonic plague an aspirin.

With two non-Jewish Labour MPs having quit because of infiltration and antisemitism, it beggars belief there are still Jewish MPs deluded enough to believe they can clean out Labour’s Augean stables or that if they sit it out, the nightmare will end.

Labour can no longer function as an effective opposition to the Tories’ shambolic failures. The 172 MPs who in 2016 voted ‘no confidence’ in Corbyn should form an alliance, select a leader, set out a credible, relevant manifesto and stand against his apparatchiks sent in to replace them.

RABBI RICH IS TOTALLY WRONG Councillor and member of the Jewish Labour Movement Rabbi Danny Rich says “Community must find a way to work with Labour” (Jewish News, 25 October).

But why? His allegiance and loyalties are clearly biased towards a Labour Party riddled from the very top to the very bottom with antisemites. His argument is “working closely with those that might form the next government does not mean that when ones sees antisemitism, it shouldn’t be called out”.

Where has Rabbi Rich been for the past three years? Acts of antisemitism have been called out far too regularly, but what has that achieved? When will he and all the other self-righteous Jewish appeasers accept that Comrade Corbyn isn’t

for turning? He is neither interested in engaging with the Jewish community nor resolving the antisemitism that he accepts, turns a blind eye to or personally engages in when it suits.

The gullible public even accept his mixed explanations (lies and counterlies) for past misdemeanours that would have had any other self-respecting politician resigning by lunchtime. But not so for our man who is against all forms of racism!

The community does not need to find a way of dealing with Labour other than exposing it for the antisemitic haven it has become. If Rabbi Rich says he is a religious Zionist member of Labour, then he is in the wrong party.

‘Kosher’ Corbynistas Jewish News was right to warn of the “existential threat” to British Jewry a Corbynled government would pose. He speaks about the “abominable tragedy”of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but pointedly fails to condemn the knifing and hacking to death of worshippers in a Jerusalem synagogue in 2014 – weeks after he met with the leader of the same terrorist group who carried it out.

who is also a life-long Democrat, referred to Corbyn as a “virulent antisemite” [when interviewed on Channel 4 News]. Corbyn hasn’t done anything like enough to counteract these criticisms.

Those Jewish Labour MPs who solicit our sympathy for the abuse directed at them by party activists should instead work to ensure a Labour government is not elected.

OFFENDED BY WORD ‘RABBI’ I take offence at the article entitled Rabbi: Close ties with Labour ‘an obligation’ – not at the man’s opinion, which is his right, or your right as a newspaper to publicise it. However, this man is not “one of the UK’s most senior rabbis”.

Many of us would not consider

him a rabbi with legitimate smicha.

Not only is this a misrepresentation, but to imply he’s up there as a senior UK rabbi, knowing he is a selfnamed rabbi by a fringe organisation is poor editorship.

SCOTTISH FOOTIE FANS VERY MUCH ENJOYED THEIR ISRAEL TRIP It may be the case that some people called for Scottish football supporters not to go to the UEFA Nations League match in Israel, but I shared the return flight to Luton with many who did go, several of whom were still wearing their kilts (Opinion, Jewish News, 25 October).

Despite being a little disgruntled at losing 2-1 to Israel in Haifa (and the fact that the easyJet flight was an hour delayed and had run out of sandwiches), they were very friendly and chatty.

The group I spoke to said they had visited several tourist sights in Israel and had very much enjoyed their stay.

Israeli Government is at risk of self-combustion JENNI FRAZER

I

t’s been a roller-coaster week for Israel and the Jewish world. Leaving aside the horrors of the shooting in Pittsburgh – at a place the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau, could not bring himself to describe as a synagogue – we have had interactions with Jordan, Abu Dhabi, and – worryingly – Brazil.

Looking first at Jordan, with which Israel signed its historic peace treaty in 1994, there were clear signs Jerusalem was caught on the hop by King Abdullah’s announcement that his kingdom would not extend a 25-year deal, which allows Israel to use two areas along the Jordanian border.

The land – Baquora in the north and Ghumar in the south – is mainly used by Israeli farmers, and Israel had been planning to negotiate an extension to the deal.

The land agreement expires in 2019, but each country has to give a year’s notice if changes are to be made.

The king is under a great deal of internal

pressure not to renew the deal. Who knows what will happen now after Israel – at Jordan’s request – sent its rescue workers and medical aid teams to help in the awful tragedy of Jordanian schoolchildren, caught in flash floods at the Dead Sea. Eighteen young people, out of a group of 37 on a day trip from their school, were swept away and died in the floods. And Israel did what it does best in such circumstances – it gave as much help as it could.

In the same week, Israel’s much-discussed behind-closed-doors relationships with other Arab countries sprang into the limelight, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly visited Oman and talked to its absolute ruler, Sultan Qaboos. Bibi (and, inevitably, his wife Sara), were accompanied by the head of Mossad on this trip.

Intriguing, at a minimum: Oman is a great ally of both Iran and Qatar, and the trip took place against the increasingly muddled messages coming out of Saudi Arabia and Turkey over the Khashoggi murder.

One thing is clear: Israel is carefully weighing up its position in a region where the tectonic shifts in power are

And so we move on to Abu Dhabi, which had the power – as few others have had – to reduce Israeli Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev to tears. The occasion was the unheard-of playing of Hatikvah, Israel’s national anthem, after judoka Sagi Muki won a gold medal at the Judo Federation’s Grand Slam competition in Abu Dhabi.

Last year, at the same event, Israel’s flag and national anthem were banned and, although Tal Flicker won a gold medal, he had to sing Hatikvah by himself.

So things are looking good, right? Wrong.

Every time Israel looks as though it is on the right side of history, someone – and, to be fair, it is usually Bibi or Regev – comes out with something crass and idiotic. Two steps

forward, 100 years back.

This time it was the usually reliable Knesset Speaker, Yuli-Yoel Edelstein. While most of the democratic world expressed nervous horror at the election of Brazil’s new hard-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, Edelstein, of whom I thought better, rushed in to welcome his election.

“Bolsonaro is a true friend of the state of Israel... We look forward to your visit to Israel and wish you all the best!”

Oh, yes, a true friend. But one who is pro-gun, pro-torture, anti-immigrant, admirer of dictators. Everything, in other words, which Israel should profoundly reject.

Sometimes, I think, if the Israeli Government had one more brain cell, it would spontaneously combust.

The haters are right. I don’t belong in Labour COLIN APPLEBY FORMER PROSPECTIVE LABOUR COUNCILLOR

I

’m dismayed at what Labour has become. We have gone from being a party that could occupy the moral high ground to one that’s rotten to the core.

Hatred and intolerance should have no place in a modern political movement, yet they have been welcomed in by our current leadership. They’ve been nurtured and have taken root and are now endemic at every level within Labour.

Jeremy Corbyn pays lip service to dealing with antisemitism. If anyone suggests that he’s in any way responsible for the growth of antisemitism within the party he replies by saying that he’s against all forms of racism and that he’s campaigned against it for years. But words are not enough.

Over time, as you might be able to perceive, I’ve grown disenchanted with both Corbyn and the Corbyn Project. He claims to be on the “right side of history” but he is not.

When Russian agents poisoned people in Salisbury, he said we needed to have more proof before responding. When Hamas encourages Palestinians to storm the border fence between Gaza and Israel, he calls for arms sales to Israel to stop. He says we shouldn’t interfere in decisions taken by other sovereign nations. His message is inconsistent. He says we should defend human rights and fight for the oppressed, yet he stood in Parliament and made an impassioned speech for the UK not to intervene to save the Yazidis.

He was against intervention in Kosovo.

He’s said nothing about the treatment meted out to Muslims or Christians by China. He always wants to intervene in Israel, however.

If he’d ever apologised for holding Israel to a higher standard than any other country, then I’d think differently of the man but he hasn’t. He is taking us all for fools.

I was a delegate at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool in September. It wasn’t a welcoming place for a Jew. At

breakfast on Monday, I was joined by two people I’d not met before. They hadn’t met each other before. They were both delegates.

The ease with which they segued from talking about breakfast to agreeing that Jews were “subhuman”, “didn’t deserve to be allowed to define what constitutes antisemitism” and should “be grateful we don’t make them eat bacon for breakfast every day” stunned me.

To my eternal shame I said nothing and left the table.

Many will say it’s not antisemitic to criticise the Israeli government and they are right, it isn’t. The Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu is a right-wing government that I do not support. That I’ve been asked in meetings to state whether or not I’m a fan of his government is antisemitic. That I’ve been asked this question, or a variant thereof many times, is shocking.

What’s more shocking still is that I’ve been told “shut up, Jew” when I’ve voiced an unpopular opinion At conference, I was fearful of the hatred that the Palestine debate would unleash.

I heard cries of “Free Free Palestine” and “From the river to the sea”, a call for nothing less than the eradication of Israel, the only Jewish homeland in the world.

I voted against the Palestine motion because it was a poorly worded motion.

I was one of about 15 who voted against.

Delegates sitting behind me called me “child-killer” and hissed at me. Not a hiss like you’d hear whilst watching a pantomime but a quiet persistent hiss like the sound gas makes when it’s escaping from a pipe.

On Wednesday, I sat with another delegate I’d not met before. They were firmly of the opinion that Corbyn was being held back from power by “the rich bankers and Jews that control the media”.

Basic facts blunt JLC chair’s surprise rebuke DANNY RICH

I

n the era of social media and in the febrile atmosphere of the Jewish community, it is perhaps both unsurprising and appropriate that Jewish newspapers should seek to explore nuance and subtle differences in the views of the various participants in communal debate.

It was, nevertheless, a little surprising that, what I considered to be a perfectly moderate call, namely that I suggested there was “an obligation for the Jewish community to work very closely with the Labour leadership; the situation today is very volatile, and working closely with those who might form the next government does not mean that when one sees antisemitism, it shouldn’t be called out…” would elicit a rebuke from the much respected chair of the Jewish Leadership Council, Jonathan Goldstein.

I appreciate that he refused to personalise the issue but his suggestion that ‘holding the Jewish community accountable for the current impasse has the danger of becoming a

form of victim-blaming…’ arises, I think, from a misunderstanding of my position.

Be that as it may, let me declare a number of interests. I am a descendant of a Jewish family who landed in England in the last quarter of the 18th century. My grandfather taught at the Jewish Free School and was captured in British infantry uniform by the Germans at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917.

His son, my late father, flew in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and, in common with British Jewry, I have thrived thanks to my ancestors’ generations bravery and loyalty to this country. Both were among the founding generations of Liberal Jews, and I have committed my life to the same cause, such that I serve as Liberal Judaism’s senior professional.

Liberal Judaism seeks to promulgate its views and practices, and, in responding to issues of the day, it does so regardless of their origin. It remains scrupulously party politically neutral. Thus I personally worked with the last Conservative-led coalition government on same-sex marriage and was an early critic of Jeremy Corbyn’s slowness in dealing

with antisemitism in the Labour Party.

Similarly, the Liberal Judaism chairman led a delegation to the ‘Enough is Enough’ rally at Westminster, and Liberal Judaism, through the efforts of its board of national officers, its clergy conference and its communities, has nothing to apologise for in its principled and robust stands on matters that directly affect the Jewish community and on wider questions too.

I repeat that at all times and in all circumstances, Liberal Judaism remains scrupulously party politically neutral.

It is also true that, having been a member of the Labour Party for nearly 40 years, I was, last May, elected as a Labour Councillor for the West

Finchley ward in the London Borough of Barnet.

I am a member of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) (and was of its precursor, Poale Zion) and, for the record, I am not a member of Jewish Voices for Labour (JLV) despite demands for me to resign from the organisation!

Is it possible for me to be both a committed and professional Liberal Jew and a local voluntary and dedicated representative of the Labour Party?

There are many who believe that the conflicts of interest are unresolvable and that the line between ‘Senior Rabbi of Liberal Judaism’ and ‘Labour Councillor for West Finchley’ is unfeasible to draw and impossible to understand.

Time, of course will tell, but from a unique position it remains my view that, if members of the Jewish community and the Labour Party are able to engage in a genuine dialogue and deal with the issues not the people, then it will be possible to arrive at a place where British Jews will feel they have a genuine choice to make at the next election, whenever it may be called.

That is, surely, of benefit to both the Jewish community and the Labour Party.

Hosted by Adam Scott Murad and David Arblaster together with the Young Chai Committee, the funds raised will go towards running the charity’s vital services. Chai’s community fundraiser Danni Blumenblatt said: “This event was the perfect opportunity to get the work of Chai out to a brand new audience.” Adam said: “I was inspired by the work they do to help the community.

Freemasons from across London came together to honour the rabbi, who also has progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), and has selected Jami as one of his chosen charities for the year. Young graduates of JLGB’s Interfaith National Citizen Service (NCS) programme were celebrated last week as being able to create a brighter future. In front of more than 300 people, 65 ambassadors from different faith and cultural backgrounds received signed certificates from Theresa May as they showcased five social action projects, each designed to tackle a common societal issue to make the world a better place. The incoming NCS Trust chair, Brett Wigdortz OBE, said: “It was incredible to see what these young people have achieved.”

Pupils at Simon Marks Jewish Primary School in Stoke Newington voted for this year’s School Council. They wrote manifestos with the help of Hackney Mayor Philip Glanville, Councillors Clare Potter, Council Speaker, and Sam Pallis, who also shared their experiences of public duty. Glanville said: “It’s been wonderful to see the candidates [and] the school community fizzing with ideas.”

Headteacher Gulcan MetinAsdoyuran said: “Our guests helped to bring democracy to life for our pupils who were excited at the opportunity to find out first-hand what democracy in action looks and feels like.”

Pupils at Keser Torah in Gateshead enjoyed a visit from Emily’s Adventures in Wonderland, with the children playing with a collection of African instruments, as well as looking at a collection of African artefacts. Dressing up in authentic African clothes including a Zulu Warrior, they listened to stories about Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman and learnt about the importance of having respect for people all over the world.

Willows Activity Farm and Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice teamed up to surprise 11-year-old Nix and her sister, Addy, with a visit from Peter Rabbit and free tickets to the attraction, which is hosting a pumpkin festival until Sunday.

For seven years, Nix has been supported by Noah’s Ark, which has launched an appeal for a purpose-built children’s hospice to support more than 1,200 babies, children and young people with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions.

Netta’s vision for Hatzalah’s future

A party fundraiser for United Hatzalah at One Marylebone raised more than £500,000 for the emergency services volunteer group.

Some 500 people attended the event in central London, hosted by friends Miss Israel (Adar Gandlesman) and Miss Iraq 2017 (Sarah Idan), and featuring Israel’s Eurovision winner Netta. Its American organisers later said the format shows the way forward for the British Jewish community.

“We created real energy,” said Ami Pomeranc.

He acknowledged that the format was a break from the UK norm, “where everyone sits down at tables, all donors, all paying just £35 for tickets then weighing up whether to give”, but this can dull an occasion, he said. “You need energy. Why make donating miserable? We took the risk but people loved the idea and enjoyed the vibe. They said ‘We’ve never had a Jewish fundraiser like this.’ It worked

– we raised a lot of money for a great charity, more than we’d hoped for.”

The event sold out and, said Pomeranc, while there were some complaints, “they were [for] things like obstructed viewing from the back, queues at the bar”.

He added: “If those were the only problems, it isn’t a problem. They even liked the kosher food!”

Pomeranc now has 2019 in his sights. “Next year we’re going to do it again, with a bigger venue, two bars and more VIP tables, but still bringing that party vibe.”

‘Anne never gave up hope’ Francine Wolfisz speaks to Gillian Walnes Perry about her new book, revealing how the most famous diary in the world continues to inspire people 70 years after it was written

D

uring the 18 years he spent locked up on Robben Island, Nelson Mandela found one book taught him much about “the invincibility of human spirit”: the wartime diary of a young Jewish teenager hiding in Amsterdam.

Such was the evocative power of The Diary of Anne Frank, the future president of South Africa urged his fellow prisoners to also learn from it.

When the book had been passed around so much that the pages began to fall out, the prisoners clandestinely took turns – using just candlelight and at great risk to themselves – to copy the pages by hand and collate them together, so that younger prisoners could also benefit from Anne’s words.

Mandela’s account is just one of the many remarkable examples of how one little diary has had a lasting effect on generations long after Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen, aged just 15.

This and many other stories of people inspired around the world by the young diarist are explored in a fascinating new book, The Legacy of Anne Frank, written by Gillian Walnes Perry, who co-founded the Anne Frank Trust UK in 1990.

Walnes Perry has seen firsthand how impactful the diary has been over the nearly 30 years she spent perpetuating Anne’s messages of courage, tolerance and fighting prejudice through a mobile exhibition that has travelled extensively throughout the UK and into prisons and schools.

But, as her book details, the reach of Anne Frank’s diary beyond the UK has been immense.

Translated into 70 languages and with more than 30 million copies sold, the diary continues to help those living through turbulent times decades after it was first written.

There are the many unknowns, the children living in post-civil war in Sri Lanka or gang-ridden cities in Guatemala and Brazil, or the teenage girl who testified against the soldiers who murdered her family in Kosovo.

There are also the families living with the grief of a murdered child, such as that of Stephen Lawrence, who was killed in a racially-motivated attack, and Myriam Hyman, a victim of the 7/7 bombings in London.

Then there are the world leaders and well-known personalities who have equally been inspired, such as Luciano Pavarotti, Angelina Jolie and Audrey Hepburn, who agreed to become a patron of the trust three years before she died.

As Walnes Perry relates in her book, Hepburn said of the young writer: “Anne Frank and I were born in the same year, lived in the same country and experienced the same war. Except she was locked up and I was on the outside.

“Reading Anne’s diary was like reading my own experiences from her point of view. I was quite destroyed by it. An adolescent girl locked up in two rooms, with no way of expressing herself other

than to her diary. She expresses the claustrophobia, but transcends it through her love of nature, her awareness of humanity and her love – real love – of life.”

Walnes Perry, who was awarded an MBE in 2010 for her work in education, believes that the diary still has the ability to touch so many lives because of Anne’s astute observances about humanity.

“Anne is very honest about her own emotional turmoil and going through adolescence in a claustrophobic situation where there was no escape. That’s something that really touches young people.

“She lived 70 years ago, but she’s writing about the same things that they are talking about, including rebelling against your parents and wanting to do a better job than many of the adults.

“There’s also a feeling, right until the very end, that there was still some hope. The Allies had landed, and when she was writing those final entries, she was still thinking of the future, that they would be liberated.

She felt that she would go on and make things better in the world.”

Her father, Otto, who survived Auschwitz and first published Anne’s diary in 1947, was also

“visionary” in spreading the power of Anne’s words.

“When he read her diary, he was determined that he could use this as a force for good, so that other young people would not have to suffer like his daughters had. His is a story of inspiration that he went on to do this amazing thing.”

In bringing together these stories of people from across the globe, Walnes Perry believes she has laid bare the true power of Anne’s diary to continue effecting change more than 70 years on.

She adds: “Some have described my book as a ‘handbook of hope’.

In these really quite difficult times, with antisemitism bubbling under the surface, people can read an uplifting story about all the good things people have undertaken in the name of one Jewish girl.”  The Legacy of Anne Frank

How Spielberg’s jewel moved the entire world Schindler’s List at 25: Steven Spielberg’s deeply Jewish story spoke to the masses, reports Michael Berenbaum

993 was a dramatic year in the memorialisation of the Holocaust. In April, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened its doors; 45 million visitors later, it is a fixture adjacent to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., not only telling the story of the Holocaust, but demonstrating the ongoing significance of this Jewish event – this European event – to the American people, to Western civilisation and to the world.

Then in November 1993, Steven Spielberg, widely recognised as the most influential director of this generation, released his monumental work Schindler’s List to international acclaim.

Forsaking many of the tools of his profession, including the beautifying effect of colour, Spielberg created a masterpiece. Nominated for 12 Academy Awards, it won seven, including best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and best original score.

The overture to Schindler’s List,, written by John Williams, is routinely played whenever Holocaust events are held. Its haunting tones evoke not only the motion picture but the event itself.

lose money, Schindler’s List was probably greenlighted by Universal Studios because Spielberg was Spielberg, a director’s director.

He vowed not to make money on the film, saying his task was sacred, not entrepreneurial. Yet despite its length of more than three hours, which made two screenings an evening difficult, it grossed $321million in its initial release, more than 14 times its original cost. Spielberg donated his entire share to charity.

The story of Oskar Schindler was cherished by its survivors, but little known even by experts.

For years, Leopold Page would tell his story to people who walked into his Beverly Hills luggage store hoping that one of his prominent customers would bring it to the screen.

Australian writer Thomas Keneally walked in one day. The result was his 1982 historical novel, Ark. Schindler’s Ark For decades, two New Jersey developers, Murray Pantirer and Abraham Zuckerman, named a Schindler Drive or Schindler Road in each of their New Jersey developments, honoring the man who saved their lives. Only later – much later – did residents of their developments understand who was being honoured and themselves feel honoured by their address.

Spielberg resisted the temptation to valorise Schindler (portrayed brilliantly by Liam Neeson, warts and all). Spielberg couldn’t quite end the film, so he gave filmgoers four endings: Schindler’s final speech wishing he had done more; the Jewish workers walking away into an uncertain future; a segment in colour featuring real-life survivors visiting Schindler’s grave; and a closing title card reading simply, “There are fewer than 4,000 Jews left alive in Poland today. There are more than 6,000 descendants of the Schindler Jews.”

The film is widely recognised as one of the finest ever made and gained such a moral stature that it was aired

by NBC without commercial inter-

ruptions. Ford’s sponsorship of the broadcast was perhaps an act of atonement or posthumous justice: Company founder Henry Ford, publisher of the antisemitic Dearborn Independent and the American disseminator of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, was honoured personally by Hitler.

The film had a monumental unintended consequence. Survivors kept coming up to Spielberg and saying “have I got a story to tell you,” and the film-maker listened with evergrowing fascination, vowing to record the testimonies of 50,000 survivors and preserve them for posterity. Naturally, he chose video.

The result was what was then called the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, which took the testimony of 52,000 Holocaust survivors in 57 countries and 32 languages, compiling the largest collection of oral history of any historical event.

In the years since, the collection has not only been disseminated in its entirety, but community after community has made use of the testimonies of local survivors to create films and educational material.

Spielberg has become a major moral voice of our generation, one that grew with time and with works such as Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, and most recently The Post, to name a few – films grappling with racism and slavery, war

and memory, press freedom and the courage to take a stand.

Spielberg grew more comfortable and profound in his Jewish identity and his ability to embrace that identity without being parochial or limiting his film audiences. His name is synonymous with film and moral excellence.

And his stature poses a challenge to film-makers of all generations to engage their own tradition and speak through that experience to the world.

Like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Schindler’s List demonstrated a Jewish story could remain deeply Jewish and yet speak to the mainstream not only of US society, but the contemporary culture as well.

In Krakow recently, I stood in line with hundreds of visitors at Schindler’s factory, where a museum has been created. It attracts visitors from throughout the world, all of whom were drawn to the place because of the story Spielberg told as only he could: of a scoundrel who over time became noble. These boots are made for snow walking!

Barry Borman ditches the skis and explores the beauty of the serene Swiss Alps on foot

I

f the crunch of crisp snow underfoot combined with sun-drenched scenery sets your pulse racing, then this destination is for you.

Swiss winter snow-walking paths are, like the pistes, meticulously prepared overnight and offer a great alternative to skiing for your snow-fix.

Catching an early morning flight to Geneva, the rail transfer brings us to Grindelwald shortly after lunchtime. We immediately board the rack-and-pinion Jungfrau Railway, chugging up to the Bellevue Des Alpes Hotel at Kleine Scheidegg (2,070m). This brownslatted, green-shuttered hideaway was in its heyday when Victorian Englishmen were claiming the Alps, all crystal chandeliers and Chippendale furniture.

Here, we hunker down in the oak-panelled lounge, the sun streaming through the panoramic windows, surveying the mountain prospect and cosily protected from the blustery snow flurries as we nurse our hot chocolates.

Kleine Scheidegg is the base for climbing the historic Eiger North Face and also where the Jungfrau Railway commences its meandering mountain ascent, tunnelling up to the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s loftiest rail station at 3,454m.

The Top of Europe summit offers restau-

rants, extensive glacier views and a stunningly sculptured Ice Palace. There are also hiking trails, although you’ll need to be warmly attired in winter temperatures hovering around -12°C. With our usual first morning anticipatory excitement, we take the cable car up to Männlichen at 2,230m. Crunching through the frosted snow, we’re the only ones delighting in this breath-taking isolation and we’re greeted by the famous triumvirate of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, the sun dazzling and the foehn cloud nestling on the Jungfrau’s shoulder like a bridal veil.

Our afternoon walk, on a gloriously sunlit path bounded by sparkling glaciers, takes us to the historic hotel built in 1865 and station at Wengernalp, beautifully captured in many nostalgic sepia-tinted period photographs.

Stretching out on the sun-trap terrace, we sample the local speciality of apfelstrudel mit vanillesauce, luxuriating in the long rays of the descending sun. After our two limb-invigorating walks, it really doesn’t get much better than this.

On a rainy day, you can nip back down the valley to the picturesque town of Interlaken and visit The Funky Chocolate Club. As well as purchasing from a wondrous selection of quirky chocolate products and sampling chocolate fondue, you can create your own masterpieces.

It’s worthwhile making the short trip into Geneva to visit the Grande Synagogue.

Completed in 1859 in a Moorish style, perhaps echoing Jewish oriental origins, the synagogue swiftly followed the full civic emancipation of the Jews into Swiss society.

va’s Ashkenazi community, it was listed as a historical monument in 1995. Nearby, you’ll find the kosher restaurant, Le Jardin, offering a comprehensive selection, including steak haché (a posh French hamburger) and grilled entrecote, with daily specialities.

Back in the hills, we board the gondola for First, gateway to Bachalpsee’s frozen lake. At 2,200 metres, the swish of ski and whirr of cable car are replaced with silence – a cold-aroundthe ears, frosty silence you can actually hear.

This is the true essence of snow walking: softly cocooned within a virgin white expanse, we’re sampling the mountain spa effect of gentle exercise for the body, coupled with a soothing balm for the soul.

At the top, there’s just a bench and the view, but that’s enough for us, confronting Grindelwald’s crystalline mountains etched against an azure sky.

Later, we gently meander downhill to Schreckfeld for an afternoon on the mountain restaurant’s sun terrace.

Ensconced in blanketed comfy chairs, beside the sheer valley drop and face-to-face with the

serrated pinnacles, we doze in the warm sun.

Our Grindelwald residence was the historic Belvedere Hotel, built in 1907 and family-run ever since.

So if you’ve returned from your hiking exertions and you fancy a spot of outdoor Swiss patisserie with your steaming, freshly-brewed coffee, then the Belvedere’s rattan-couched sun terrace is the place, enchantingly back-dropped by the stunning mountain amphitheatre.

Come evening, it’s a cosily magical experience in the sumptuous dining room indulging gourmet French cuisine while observing the twinkling mountain chalets and powerful searchlights of the mechanical gridders preparing tomorrow’s snow walk.

The jewel in the hotel’s crown and “bucket list” requisite for the pleasurable rejuvenation of walkers’ weary limbs is the outdoor hot tub.

It’s most atmospheric if you take your dip in the evening, when the tub is dramatically illuminated by flaming Roman torches and accentuated by gently cascading snow crystals, which lodge and then melt as they caress your eyelids.

Our balcony was back clothed with an awesome view of the Wetterhorn, Grindelwald’s “glacier mountain”. As evening approaches, the silver-grey of night glides up the crags, encroaching the burnished amber glow of the summit pyramid.

This ethereal vision, together with memories of incandescent peaks, cobalt skies and crisp powdered snow underfoot, provides the perfect antidote to the “fast forward” of the daily grind.

He had to endure the tough separation from “his father’s house”, the aggravations of his nephew, Lot, the two occasions on which he has to leave the land because of famine, the long drawn-out wait for a son, the conflict between Sarah and Hagar and the double trial of having to send Ishmael away and almost lose Isaac also.

Abraham reveals his emotions at the displacement of Ishmael and his protest against the destruction of Sodom. But he constantly places himself in God’s hands. He trusts God to do what he says he will do.

He is promised seven times in the Torah that he will inherit the land of Israel, yet he now finds himself without owning a part of land to bury his wife. He seems to be entirely at the mercy of the townspeople. Although initially offered the cave and land for free, Abraham insists on purchasing them.

Ephron sells him his cave and land for an extortionate amount of money. It all seems an impossibly long way from the vision God has painted for him of the entire country one day becoming a home for his descendants. Yet Abraham is content.

That is the faith of an Abraham. The man promised as many children as the stars of the sky has one child to continue the covenant. The man promised the land “from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates” [15: 18] has acquired one field and a tomb. Abraham knows that “it is not for you to complete the task”. BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Last Shabbat morning, Robert Bowers walked into a synagogue in Pittsburgh and opened fire on the congregation while it was at prayer. What does the Torah say about such a horrendous act?

The first murder occurred over jealousy between Cain and Abel, resulting in the “mark of Cain” singling out one of them for the rest of his life.

The first fratricide destroyed 25 percent of the then-existing world population. Only one person killed, but it was a massacre of one-quarter of those living and billions of future descendants.

The blood of the innocent is said to “cry out from the ground”, as we learn from the story of priest Zachariah ben Yehoyada, murdered during the reign

of Yoash because he reprimanded the king and the princes of Judah. His blood bubbled in the courtyard of the Temple and did not calm and soak into the earth until the enemy general Nevuzaradan slaughtered the entire cadre of serving priesthood and the Sanhedrin.

THE INJUSTICE IN EXECUTING INNOCENT LIVES STAINS BOTH THE PERPETRATOR AND THE SOCIETY IN WHICH IT HAPPENS

The injustice in executing innocent lives, even with formal authority, stains both the perpetrator and the society in whose midst this happened.

Fanning flames of racial hatred is a protected phenomenon under the First Amendment. However, under Torah law, no-one has the right to threaten others with their lives.

Quite to the contrary: if someone threatens the life of another, it invites the mitzvah to defend oneself.

In the times of Esther and Mordechai, Haman’s troops were ready to attack Jews everywhere, and so even though they had not yet fired the first shot they had to be neutralised.

It is crucial that freedoms are not used to rob others of their safety or threaten their security.

‘God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son’

What does Judaism say about public health campaigns such as Movember?

BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH The Akedah, the passage in Genesis Chapter 22 where Abraham is asked

by God to take his son Isaac and burn him as a sacrifice, is one of the most commented upon in the Torah.

It is one of our Torah portions for every Rosh Hashanah, so every rabbi in the world has given sermons about it many times.

On face value it is horrendous that God should test Abraham in this way. At the beginning of the narrative, Abraham is all too willing to go through with it.

Then it becomes clear that Isaac has worked out what is happening and is ready to be that sacrifice. He chooses to walk on together with his father Abraham, when he has worked out that his father has a knife, fire and wood and that the only thing apparently missing is the sacrifice – which must be Isaac himself.

Abraham does not, of course, kill and sacrifice his son. He is stopped by a messenger from God, who enables

Abraham to substitute, for Isaac, a ram, caught in a bush by the horns which will in future be sounded as our shofar.

Surely parents do not meekly, obediently sacrifice their children? Surely if that were to happen the children would complain bitterly, run away and refuse to do as they are asked?

When we consider the pressures that we as a society, without complaint, put on our children, at school, through the media to which they have access, though our expectations of them, it seems that we are willing at least to sacrifice their childhoods.

The extraordinary statistics on the proportions of children with mental health challenges bear this out.

Our children comply to please us parents and to fit in. That’s where we need to listen to a messenger who says enough, nurture the whole person and not only what is required by their school or social group.  Mark Goldsmith is rabbi of Alyth

BY RABBI DANNY RICH Contributing to one’s health not only makes sense, but is a Jewish moral imperative which the rabbis of the Talmud derived from Torah itself.

The Deuteronomist (4:9) says: “Take care of yourself and guard your soul (life) well.” From this the principle that “one may not injure oneself” arises (Baba Kamma 91b).

Thereafter, Jewish tradition is replete with advice to care for oneself.

Perhaps best known is the medicallyqualified philosopher Maimonides, who noted: “We have a duty to avoid whatever is injurious to the body, and cultivate habits conducive to health and strength.” (Hilchot De’ot 4:1).

Reflecting on my own health, particularly on my current exercise programme and diet, Mattuck’s words flood back. I’m not alone, as for many of us it is both difficult – but possible – to take action that might improve our well-being.

Knowing that we have a Jewish obligation to be healthy, and conscious of how easy it is to fail, but how possible it is to succeed, I welcome gestures such as Movember.

Campaigns of this nature often seem trite, but if they help fallible humans to take responsibility for their health then they too might be, in the words of the Psalmist (11:7) “a righteous deed which the Eternal One loves”.  Rabbi Danny Rich is senior rabbi of Liberal Judaism

Jonah conquers 600-mile triathlon Sports enthusiast Jonah Marks has completed a gruelling 600-mile triathlon, after marking his barmitzvah year by raising money for charity.

Cycling 570 miles, running 63 miles and swimming 7.5 miles in nine months, he raised more than £1,000 for World Bicycle Relief, a US-based charity which distribute bicycle programs to aid poverty relief in developing countries around the world.

Choosing to raise money for WJR because “it combined his love of sport with a desire to help schoolchildren in the developing world”, he said: “I’m lucky enough that I can just get on the bus to JFS, so when I heard that some girls never got to finish school because they lived so far away that it would take them two hours to walk, I wanted to help.”

Doing most of the cycling alongside

his dad Simon, his challenge saw him take on some of the steepest parts of the Peak District and run the 10km Maccabi Community Fun Run, which saw him finish first in his age group.

“Some of the challenge has been tough”, he said, “especially earlier in the year when it was so cold out that there was still snow and ice on the road and when my dad and I got caught in a crazy thunderstorm while up a mountain and ended up riding down ski slopes! But I’ve loved it and so glad I’ve raised enough money to pay for 13 bikes.

Now I want to see if I can reach 900 miles by the end of the year.”

An all-rounder in terms of sports, he enjoys participating in, he regularly runs with his younger brother Rafi, rides with his uncle Paul and grandmother Linda and is now a member of his local cycling club, which he joined to build up his endurance.
