‘We’ll stay and fight’ Members of the Jewish Labour Movement voted overwhelmingly in favour of staying in the party at two hastily arranged Emergency General Meetings in London and Manchester on Wednesday night. The more than 200 people crowding the Western Marble Arch Synagogue in central London heard passionate pleas to stay and fight from three Jewish Labour MPs, Dame Louise Ellman, Dame Margaret Hodge and Ruth Smeeth. Also attending were supportive MPs Wes Streeting, Bill Esterson and Ian Austin – who quit the party last week. Ivor Caplin, who chaired the meeting, said JLM members were “rightly angry at the situation… And it’s not just Labour members that are angry and frustrated, it’s the Jewish community too.” He went on to thank Stella Creasy and the 140 Labour MPs who had signed a letter supporting JLM and urging it not to disaffiliate. Caplin added to applause that “I am staying to

fight in Labour, as I did in the 1980s”. Peter Mason, JLM national secretary, said the movement had “been with Labour through thick and thin and we should stay and fight”. But he had a message to the 150 odd MPs who did not sign Creasy’s letter and for candidates in May’s local elections: “If you want our solidarity,
you must show solidarity with us.” Ellman said it was “a fight for the soul of the Labour Party. “We joined to fight racism, but you can’t be an anti-racist party if there is antisemitism”. However, she noted a change of late. “I feel it’s different in the party now. Tom Watson [the
deputy leader] and the 140 MPs who signed the letter show that we are getting through with our fight. But we must intensify our efforts,” she said. “Yes, we are in a major battle, but this is not the time to leave. This is the time to increase our efforts in this fight.” Hodge said JLM members needed to “look at the bigger picture. Labour has been around 100 years, the JLM and its predecessor Poalei Zion 99 years. I’ve been a member for 56 years. But Jeremy Corbyn has been leader for only three and-a-half-years. Smeeth pleaded with members to stay. “I really need you. We really need you. I don’t want to be a Jewish MP with the [Corbynista] Jewish Voice for Labour representing Jews in the party,” she said. In the debate that preceded the vote, where only a handful of members voted for disaffiliation, the mood was nevertheless combative. One after the other, members said that the movement should stay in the party if only to ensure that the mainstream Jewish voice is heard.

Falconer probe into Labour ‘fool’s gold’ Conservative Party, Sir Mick Davis, it was Ryan who first received rapturous applause and appreciation from the audience at JW3, as she was praised for her principle in standing up against hate. The MP, who remains chair of Labour Friends of Israel, described Lord Falconer as “a good man, who will try his best.” But, she said, “If [antisemitism] is such a little problem, why has it taken three and a half years to resolve it? “Why is it, that every day, we are presented with a new way in which this problem is going to be resolved, is going to be dealt with – and within hours of the announcement, it all unravels?” Institutional racism, she suggested, was “within the very structures, and the ideology. She “hoped against hope”, she said, “that we do not see Jeremy Corbyn in Number 10”. Both Herzog and Sir Mick paid tribute to Ryan – the three are old friends — before taking part in a wide-ranging conversation about the often fraught relationship between Israel and the diaspora. Sir Mick has been a trenchant critic of some Israeli attitudes in the past and observed that historically “Israel did not understand [the concept of] the diaspora. It was viewed as a a temporary phenomenon which would disappear”. Sir Mick acknowledged that much of the criticism against him for expressing his ideas related to him not being an Israeli citizen or taxpayer. But Herzog said he was happy with “legitimate criticism and advice” from the diaspora, citing a Hebrew expression, “the wounds of a lover”. He added: “You are entitled to say what you want, and we are obliged to hear it”.

A Labour parliamentary candidate in Harrow has denied she deliberately left her council chamber at the moment of a decisive motion to avoid voting on the issue of antisemitism . Councillor Pamela Fitzpatrick (pictured with Shadow Chancellor John McDonell), Labour’s candidate for
Harrow East, left the chamber as the vote took place but denied accusations she deliberately left the council chamber to avoid voting on
the motion. She told Jewish News: “When I left there was no indication whatsoever the vote was about to take place. I was and am completely supportive of the motion, and I’m glad it passed unanimously.” The Conservative-proposed motion said: “All forms of racism and antisemitism should be condemned.”
LUCIANA WELCOMES BABY BOY Luciana Berger has announced the birth of her second child. In a message on Twitter, the 37-year-old Liverpool Wavertree MP said her son was born at the NHS Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Tuesday. She said that she, husband Alistair and daughter Amelie
– whose second birthday comes later this month – were “brimming with happiness” at the arrival of the baby boy. She wrote: “A massive thank you to the fantastic team @LiverpoolWomens for looking after us both with so much care.” Berger was one of the seven Labour MPs who quit the
party on February 18 to found the Independent Group. The Jewish MP had been facing threats of a vote of no-confidence from members of her constituency party. On quitting Labour, she said that she believed Jeremy Corbyn’s party had become “institutionally anti-Semitic”.

Corbyn: Hodge breached trust
Dame Margaret Hodge
Jeremy Corbyn hit back at Dame Margaret Hodge this week after she accused him of misleading her on the extent of his involvement in antisemitism cases, or being misled himself. The senior Labour MP accused members of the Labour leader’s “inner circle” of interfering in the outcome of antisemitism cases to reduce the sanction imposed. She wrote to the Labour leader to set out her concerns about the party’s handling of antisemitism cases, following a damning report in The Observer on Sunday. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Hodge claimed she had been given “absolute, copperbottomed undertakings” by
Corbyn that there was “no interference in the complaints process by his inner circle”. She added: “What we then discover from The Observer, and I have seen further emails, is that a whole number of his top team are involved in decisions around individual complaints and what they do is they interfere and lower the sanctions so people aren’t suspended, they are just given a warning letter. “What is so awful about this is that Jeremy always proclaims zero tolerance of antisemitism. When it comes to the actual cases, if they are his mates he doesn’t demonstrate zero tolerance... Misleading me, or himself being misled, really undermines my trust for him.”
However, Corbyn criticised Hodge in a letter for allegedly recording a recent meeting between the two, describing it as a “total breach of trust and privacy”. He insisted a “very small group” of staff had been “asked for help in clearing a backlog of cases” by staff from Labour’s governance and legal unit and responded “in good faith”. Corbyn wrote: “The decision making remained with staff members from GLU, and there was no attempt to overrule them.” Hodge also questioned the plan for former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer to be brought in to examine the issue, saying she was “absolutely bombarded by calls from Charlie
Falconer”, who called on her to apologise following a heated clash with Corbyn last year in which she called the Labour leader a “racist and antisemite”. “We need somebody totally outside the Labour Party otherwise this becomes another Chakrabarti fiasco,” Hodge said. A Labour Party spokesman said: “Since becoming general secretary, Jennie Formby has made procedures for dealing with complaints about antisemitism more robust. “Staff who work on disciplinary matters have always led on investigations and recommendations on individual cases. Any suggestion staff in the leaders’ office overturned recommendations is untrue.”

News / Census divide
Jewish split for next census Jewish ‘ethnicity’ is set to be defined differently in England and Scotland for the next national census, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The 2021 survey for England and Wales will not include a ‘Jewish’ option under the ethnicity question because English Jews feel it evokes a “history of discrimination and persecution” suffered under the Nazis. As part of a government-backed consultation, focus groups in London and Manchester last year showed Jews “prefer to have a ‘Jewish’ option only in the religion question”, but Scottish Jewish leaders have said they were now advocating for its inclusion under ethnicity as well. The announcement from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) dashes the hopes of those who think the true number of Jews in England and Wales may be tens of thousands more than currently assumed. Ahead of the next census in 2021, a Jewish option under ethnicity had been on the table, but in a newly-published White Paper the ONS said there was “a strong consensus” against it. The only specific ‘Jewish’ option on the census for England and Wales now comes under religion, but this does not
The ONS rejected a Jewish option under ‘ethnicity’ after feedback
allow for Jews who consider themselves Jewish by heritage and birth yet choose to follow a different religion, or for non-religious Jews who prefer to list themselves as ‘atheist’ instead. The ONS said non-religious Jews “would still be likely to record themselves as Jewish under religion as this is how they were accustomed to communicating their identity”. The 2011 census recorded 269,000 Jews in England and Wales, but Canadian research suggests 27.6 percent more people think of themselves as ‘ethnically Jewish’ than ‘religiously
Jewish’, and Scottish research has shown this to be as high as 64 percent. If applied across England and Wales, the addition of the ‘Jewish’ ethnicity option could mean more than 400,000 people identify as Jewish in the UK. The ONS said there is still the option to record Jewish identity by hand in the ‘other’ box, but said there was no appetite for extending this provision under the ethnicity question. “This recommendation follows focus group testing through an external research agency on the ethnic group question,” it said. “There
was a strong consensus that a specific Jewish response option is unacceptable, irrespective of placement.” Last April, an external agency was recruited to conduct focus group testing to “assess the acceptability of the addition of Jewish, Sikh, Somali and Roma options to the ethnic group question”. Researchers said 55 Jews from London and Manchester took part in the exercise but saw the inclusion of a ‘Jewish’ option under ethnicity “as a negative attempt to single out the Jewish population”. They added responses “were framed by collective history of discrimination, where references to Jewishness as an ethnicity evoked comparisons to the discrimination and persecution suffered by Jewish people over the last century”. Researchers said participants “spoke about the racialisation of the Jewish religion and how any reference to singling out or segregating Jewish participants evoked comparisons to Nazi Germany. “This was deemed to be particularly problematic when made explicit on official government forms, and raised concerns about why the state was exclusively pronouncing Jewish
as an ethnicity.” The ONS consulted the Board of Deputies and the Institute of Jewish Policy Research (JPR), the two organisations having entered into a formal alliance in 2015. The Board and JPR felt changes in the way Jews selfidentify could cause concerns around continuity of data. This, they said, was leaving policy planners “unable to tell if changes to resulting data are due to a genuine population change or the change in approach”. The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) has taken a different approach, however, and last week said it was advising National Records of Scotland (NRS) to add ‘Jewish’ as an option under ethnicity. “We believe this is important,” SCoJeC said in a mailshot to Scottish Jews. “We know from research after previous censuses that around one in three people who identify as Jewish, and may therefore wish to use culturally specific communal welfare and social facilities, did not tick ‘Jewish’ under the religion question... “We have argued for including the option under ethnicity as well, to ensure everyone who identifies as Jewish in any way is able to do so.”

Arrest after Hendon woman found dead
Crime scene: Great North Way in Hendon
A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead at a property in Barnet. Police were called at 10.19am on Saturday to a report of a disturbance at an address in Great North Way in Hendon. Elize Stevens, 50, who worked for the S&P Sephardi Community as its welfare officer, was found inside the address with fatal knife injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.55am. Ian Levy, aged 54, of Lime Court, Great North Way, has been charged with the murder and was due to appear on Monday at Willesden Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge. He was arrested at the scene. Mrs Stevens and Levy are understood to have been known to each other. Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance. A statement was sent to the entire S&P community on Monday morning from CEO
David Arden. It said: “It is with great shock and sorrow that we inform you of the untimely death of our dear colleague and friend Elize Stevens, whose life was taken. Elize was the tragic victim of a violent and horrific crime which occurred on Shabbat. “Elize had not been working with us for long, but in the six months since she joined, we were all impressed by her friendly nature, warmth and dedication to the job of welfare officer, and in that short time she has accomplished a great deal. “She will be greatly missed by all her colleagues who had grown to know her as she became an essential component of the S&P team. We wish her family a long life free from any further sorrow and grief.” Arden said her surviving three children and grandchildren “have to cope, not only with the emotional distress of their mother’s sudden passing, but also with the financial implications such desperately sad circumstances involve”. The S&P Community has opened an account for donations and will make details available about a funeral and shiva. S&P vice president, David Ereira, told Jewish News: “We are very shocked and disturbed by this tragic news. Our thoughts are with the family.” • Anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to call the incident room on 020 8785 8099 quoting CAD 2535/02MAR, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. EMOTIONAL TARRANT MEETS SHOAH SURVIVORS IN HENDON Chris Tarrant has called on society to “never stop telling what happened to the Jewish race,” during an emotional visit with Holocaust survivors yesterday. The 72-year-old broadcaster was invited to speak at Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors’ Centre in Hendon about the making of his critically-acclaimed Channel 5 programme, Railways of The Holocaust, which aired in October. The 90-minute special focused solely on how the railways were used to perpetrate the Shoah. The former host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire said: “I asked what this plaque was and was told it was one of the trucks Stalin used to transport his political prisoners, Jews and gypsies, to the Stalags in the extreme north of Siberia. He took about 300,000 people up there. “We went inside this truck and I said, ‘My God, can you imagine travelling five miles in this, let alone probably 10,000 miles, the dead being thrown out the doors as they are travel-

ling, the toilet just a bucket in the corner.’ That’s when I said we ought to look at the railways in the Holocaust.” Interviewing survivors, Tarrant was particularly touched by the story of Arek Hersh, who agreed to travel to Auschwitz with him for the programme. “His parents were murdered when he was eight and, out of a family of 18, only two survived. All the others were murdered. “He was in a ghetto where he saw death every day, before being sent to work on a railway. Can you imagine a little 11-yearold boy whose job was to put people who were murdered by
Nazis into a wheelbarrow and take them to a place of burial?” Hersh declined to go into the gas chamber, leaving Tarrant to enter with a cameraman. He said: “We were both absolutely shocked. I couldn’t speak to anyone afterwards. Although you know the stories, you just can’t believe the evil.” Tarrant said he feels compelled to educate others about the Holocaust, adding: “We must never stop telling this story. We must always tell what happened to our children, our grandchildren and the next generation and must never stop teaching it in schools.”

News / Bitter pill / Chabad opening
Al Quds organiser sells Israeli products A pharmacy whose managing partner is the Al-Quds Day organiser sells Israeli products, Jewish News has discovered. Nazim Ali, whose 2017 comments at the annual anti-Israel march in London heralded a long legal fight and who claimed Zionists were “responsible” for Grenfell, is managing partner of Chelsea Pharmacy Medical Clinic, which was this week shown to stock products from Israel’s Teva Pharmaceuticals. A visit to the Sloane Avenue pharmacy by an undercover shopper on Monday revealed it stocked Teva products including Salamol Easi-Breathe, which is used by asthma sufferers. While the marketing authorisation holder is Norton Healthcare Ltd, a Teva UK spokesman confirmed this week it was a Teva product. News that Ali’s Chelsea Pharmacy stocks Israeli products will come as an embarrassment to the director of the Wembley-based
Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), the principal organiser of the pro-Hezbollah rally. It was in his IHRC role that Ali angered the Jewish community two years ago by appearing to blame the Grenfell tragedy on “Zionists” and calling the Israel Defence Forces a “terrorist organisation”. Addressing Al Quds Day counter-demonstrators at the time, he said: “These people do not know what justice is because it is their supporters who are supporting the Tory Party. That’s who they are: Zionists who give money to the Tory Party to kill people in high rise blocks.” A private prosecution against Ali was brought by Campaign Against Antisemitism but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stepped in to end the group’s efforts hours before Ali was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Undercover shopper Jonathan Hoffman said: “This vividly

The rabbi behind a Chabad centre opening this Sunday has said his aim is to “connect all 12,000 Jews in Elstree and Borehamwood to their Judaism”. Rabbi Chaim and Leah Hoch moved to the area in 2011 and have been holding events in their house or in a marquee in the garden, so Sunday’s grand opening of the Jewish Life Centre marks a fundamental shift for the couple. The rented 1,250 sq ft firstfloor space in Keystone Passageway, near Shenley Road, includes a kitchen, office and multi-function room the rabbi said would be “open to eve-
ryone, regardless of affiliation, knowledge or whether they go to shul or not… in fact, we’re especially keen to welcome Jews who don’t go to shul”. He added: “We think there are between 10,000 and 12,000 Jews in Elstree and Borehamwood and think most are interested in connecting [to Judaism] in some way. Our goal is to reach every single one.” The couple say they need £250,000 for the first year, which includes refurbishment costs, then £150,000 per year after that, but are hopeful the government or local authority may help.

SHUL PRAISE FOR HEALTH CAMPAIGNER
One of the country’s largest Reform synagogues has praised a mental health campaigner and a doctor who helps stroke victims learn to walk and eat again. Dr Jackie McRae and Jonny Benjamin, who was talked out of taking his own life by a stranger in 2008, were recipients of the inaugural Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue Awards. Also acknowledged was Gideon Futerman, 15, for his “amazing” efforts in combatting global warming, and Shelly Dannell, for “turning young lives around,” while senior Rabbis Danny Smith and Steven Katz were honoured for lifetime contributions to their community.
Heartfelt tributes to ‘beloved’ rabbi Tributes were made this week to Rabbi Jeremy Collick, formerly of Edgware Masorti, who has passed away at the age of 61, days before he was due to make aliyah with his wife Cindy. Collick, who retired in 2014 from the community after 30 years of service owing to ill health, will be remembered for his guidance and warmth. He joined Edgware Masorti Synagogue in 2000 after serving Edgware and District Reform Synagogue and Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue. Edgware Masorti Synagogue said in a statement it was “saddened to record the passing of our beloved teacher and rabbi”. The shul said: “He was already well known to many of our members who were delighted to see him take up our leadership. “Sadly, in 2014, with continuing ill health, he had to retire as our rabbi. “However, in all the years that followed, he was a continuing force for advice, guidance and teaching for the community. “He was in every sense a congregational rabbi caring for the sick and anxious. “To quote him, while he himself was in hospital, he wrote: ‘I was never sure that my visits made a real difference to those I was trying to

News / Memorial debate / Traveller help
Mayor backs planned Protection call for Travellers Holocaust memorial Rabbis and Jewish human rights groups have urged Home Secretary Sajid Javid to better protect Britain’s Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. An open letter, signed by rabbis from all denominations as well as the Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE), expressed “deep concern at the Government’s portrayal and treatment” of Europe’s largest ethnic minority.
Blueprint of the proposed memorial opposite Parliament
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has thrown his weight behind the proposed Westminster Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre – while saying he’s “deeply concerned” plans may be rejected by the local council. A planning application for the memorial, which has been backed by more than 170 MPs and peers, is currently being considered by Westminster City Council. Critics of the proposal, including Historic England and the Royal Parks, which
manages the site have cited the impact the memorial will have on the park – fearing the memorial’s construction could compromise flood defences and cause “substantial harm” to the Westminster World Heritage Site. Khan, who chose to attend a Yom HaShoah event as his first official engagement as mayor, gave his backing to the plans, saying: “As the years pass and we see the scourge of antisemitism and hate crime increasing once again, it becomes ever more important
that we work hard to ensure younger generations learn the lessons from history. The National Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre will be important to London” and a symbol against racism. That’s why I’m so deeply concerned that this vital centre may not be approved.” Last week the leaders of Britain’s two parliamentary chambers, Andrea Leadsom MP and Baroness Evans of Bowes Park, wrote a joint letter expressing their support for the memorial.
It follows a Home Office announcement earlier this month regarding a crackdown on “illegal traveller sites” as a way of “protecting our local communities” as an example of language she said evidenced “the last bastion of acceptable racism”. Mia Hasenson-Gross, director of the René Cassin human rights group, another signatory, said the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities “share a history of per-
secution with Jewish people”. Among those signing the letter include senior Orthodox Rabbi Herschel Gluck, senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill United Synagogue, and Rabbi Aaron Goldstein, chair of the Conference of Liberal Rabbis and Cantors. Others include youth groups such as RSY-Netzer and the heads of University Jewish societies.

Camp Simcha raised £1.85million for its vital services at a sumptuous dinner in Mayfair this week, writes Mathilde Frot. Nearly 1,000 guests filed in for Monday’s reception and dinner in the Grosvenor House Hotel’s Great Room, which was decorated in the style of a circus tent, with colourful ceiling drapes and balloons. There were children’s entertainers, including mimes and clowns, and LBC presenter Nick Ferrari helped lead a silent auction. Camp Simcha’s president Jonathan Goldstein announced the plans to support families of children suffering from a serious mental health condition, such as OCD, anxiety or eating disorders, while working “hand in hand with colleagues in the other key agencies”. The charity will initially support a pilot group of families who have a child who has been hospitalised or on extended school absence as a result of their mental health condition. Clinical psychologist Karen Millett, who worked with Camp Simcha during the consultation, said: “When a child’s mental health condition has become so severe they are hospitalised or off school, parents become understandably

David was diagnosed with Lissencephaly, a rare brain disorder, told guests: “Our childhood has been spent in the company of doctors, nurses and carers. “Camp Simcha gave me back some parts of my childhood I felt I was missing out on, the normal things other kids take for granted, and they gave my parents vital opportunities to take a breath.”

CHARITY AUCTION IN MEMORY OF LINDA Friends of a Jewish woman who died from ovarian cancer last year are holding an auction day later this month to raise money for the hospice that cared for her. Linda Ullah, known to many as Linda Saffer, worked in the pens department at Selfridges for 25 years and her mates this week said companies that supplied the famous store had stumped up expensive gifts for the auction on 24 March. Friends Sandie Donovan and Rayna Bowman are hosting the day in Linda’s memory in order to raise money for St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds, where the 59-year-old spent her final weeks before she passed away in October. “Linda lived in Gants Hill for most of her life and moved to Spain for eight years with her husband Sean to open a fish and chip shop,” said Rayna. “She didn’t have any children but adored my twin girls, who she called ‘The Dollies’.”

Vatican opens ‘Hitler’s Pope’ archive
Pope Pius XII. In 1933, he agreed with the debated concordat with the Third Reich
The Vatican has agreed to open its archive on Pius XII, the wartime pope accused of staying quiet as Jews were led to their deaths in the millions during the Holocaust. Campaigners have long urged the Catholic Church to reveal what the pontiff knew and did during the Shoah, to set the historical record straight on a man dubbed “Hitler’s Pope”. Jewish groups say he turned a blind eye to genocide. Pope Francis said in 2016 he was receptive to the idea of opening the archives, describing Pius XII as “a great defender of Jews” who hid Jewish families in convents and even in his own house, with 42 Jewish babies born there. In 2010, before he became pope, Francis co-authored a book, On Heaven and Earth, with Rabbi Abraham Skorka, the pair being good friends from their days as
religious leaders in Buenos Aires. In it, they said it was “reasonable” for independent researchers to be able to read the thousands of closed-file documents hidden away in Vatican vaults. “Let them be opened up and let everything be cleared up,” they wrote, addressing criticism of Pius that he never denounced Hitler. “Let it be seen if they could have done something [to help] and until what point they could have helped.” Once elected, Skorka urged the pontiff to use his influence to push for openness, a battle finally won this week as Francis revealed the secret archives would open on 2 March next year. “The church is not afraid of history,” he said, adding that Pius’ legacy had been treated with “some prejudice and exaggeration”. The late Jewish historian Sir Martin
Gilbert defended Pius, saying the pontiff helped directly to save 4,700 Jewish lives in Rome, that 477 Jews were given refuge in the Vatican and arguing that Pius should be included in Yad Vashem’s Righteous Among the Nations. The demand for open access increased in 2009 after Pius was declared “venerable”, the second of four stages on the way to sainthood, and this week, the international director of interreligious affairs at the American Jewish Committee, Rabbi David Rosen, welcomed the long-awaited move. “It is particularly important that experts from the leading Holocaust memorial institutes in Israel and the US objectively evaluate as best as possible the historical record of that most terrible of times, to acknowledge both the failures as well as the valiant efforts made during the period of the Shoah,” he added.
Fury over Nazi caricature HOW HISTORY CAN HELP float at Belgian carnival TEACH MORAL LESSONS A parade float that depicts “Nazistyle” Jewish caricatures standing atop piles of cash has unleashed a storm of controversy after it was paraded through a Belgian city centre, writes Michael Havis. One is smoking a cigar and appears to have a rat on his shoulder, and both are surrounded by coins and money bags. The Coordinating Committee of Jewish Organisations in Belgium called on carnival chiefs to denounce the float. “At best it is a lack of discernment, especially given the rising context of antisemitism in our country and in the world,” said a spokesperson. “At worst, it is the reproduction of antisemitic caricatures worthy of the Nazi era.” The float’s appearance coincides with a rising tide of antisemitism sweeping Europe and European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas called on the Belgian authorities to take action. “It should be obvious to all that portraying such representations in the streets of Europe is absolutely unthinkable, 74 years after the Holocaust,” he said. Vismooil’n told a Belgian blogger last month the float addressed the impact of rising prices.

The segment, presented by King Lion, appeared on Omega, which calls itself “London’s finest Reggae Radio Station”, on 17 February. It was first reported and shared online by the Israel Advocacy Group, which branded it “the most outrageous antisemitism ever broadcast on British airwaves”. The unnamed presenter for the programme said: “Rabbi Finkelstein is as I said a rabbi off the East Coast of the United States. Netanyahu probe / World News
Corruption allegations leave Bibi on the brink
Israel’s attorney general has recommended indicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (pictured) with bribery and breach of trust in a series of corruption cases. The shook up Israel’s election campaign this week as it could spell the end of the prime minister’s illustrious political career. Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announced his decision after more than two years of intense investigations and deliberations. Police had recommended indicting Netanyahu for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three cases that ranged from accepting expensive gifts from wealthy allies to allegedly trading influence for more favourable press coverage. “The attorney general has reached his decision after thoroughly examining the evidence,” his statement said. The final decision on indictment will only take place after a hearing, during which Netanyahu will be given the opportunity to defend himself. That process is expected to take
many months and be completed long after the 9 April elections. An indictment would mark the first time in Israeli history that a sitting prime minister has been charged with a crime. Former prime minister Ehud Olmert served time in prison for corruption, but had already resigned by the time he was charged. He said: “I’m disgusted by the enormity of the corruption and the total moral collapse of this man. It is a sad day for our country and our people.” Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing and calls the various allegations a media-orchestrated witch hunt aimed at removing him from office. He has vowed to carry on and is deadlocked in the polls, 40 days before
Israelis go to vote. Netanyahu scheduled a press conference last Thursday to respond to the attorney general’s decision. In a last-ditch effort to prevent the public release of an indictment, Netanyahu’s Likud party petitioned the Supreme Court to have it delayed until after the elections, which was rejected. Despite opposition calls for Netanyahu to step down, Likud and his other nationalist coalition partners have lined up behind him so far, all but ruling out sitting in a government led by his primary opponent, retired military chief Benny Gantz. While Israeli prime ministers are not required by law to resign if charged, the prospect of a prime minister standing trial while simultaneously running the country would be unchartered territory.
Mandelblit’s decision could either galvanise Netanyahu’s hardline supporters who see him as a victim of an overzealous prosecution or turn more moderate backers against him who have tired of his lengthy rule tainted by longstanding accusations of corruption and hedonism. US President Donald Trump, with whom Netanyahu has forged a close connection, offered the Israeli leader a boost ahead of the expected announcement. “He’s been a great prime minister and I don’t know about his difficulty but you tell me something people have been hearing about, but I don’t know about that,” he said. “I can say this: he’s done a great job as prime minister. He’s tough, he’s smart, he’s strong.” The most serious allegations against Netanyahu involve his relationship with Shaul Elovitch, the controlling shareholder of Israel’s telecom giant Bezeq. Police said t h e i r investigation concluded N et a ny a h u and Elovitch engaged in a “bribe-based relationship”.
What now for Israel’s great survivor? VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS Benjamin Netanyahu has no intention of resigning unless he has to, which he legally doesn’t, so he will still lead Likud into elections unless there is a putsch from within. The big immediate question is
whether Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit will release all the documentation from the police investigations, as would normally happen. Bibi’s lawyers know the press would have a field day if he did, so they’ve been clambering to stop this from happening for fear of its effect at the ballot box. The legal process is an arduous
and onerous one, hence why past prime ministers have resigned to fight the charges. But Bibi’s lawyers may succeed in arguing it should not come to trial (which is what he’ll tell anxious would-be coalition partners ). All eyes will now be on his potential partners and what they say about serving in a Bibi govern-
ment if he has been indicted. Crucial to the parliamentary equations may be Moshe Kahlon, who leads centrist party Kulanu. Kahlon has been clear Bibi could not continue as prime minister if indicted, and that he would not serve under him if he had. With some important seats, Kahlon could yet be kingmaker – or, more likely, king breaker.
BIBI IS DOWN BUT NOT OUT BY JAMES SORENE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BICOM
Israel’s Attorney General, Avichai Mandelblit, is an unlikely villain in Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption drama. The IDF Advocate General – before Netanyahu appointed him Cabinet Secretary and then Attorney General – is not a high-flyer with slick suits and soaring ambition, but a respected public servant committed to the rule of law. As such, Mandelblit’s recommendation that Netanyahu be indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of trust packed a bigger punch. Bibi says this is all a witch hunt, that Mandelblit has succumbed to pressure from leftists intent on bringing him down. For opposition leaders, Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid, the indictment is a gift that powerfully reinforces their message that Bibi’s time is up What happens next? Netanyahu is innocent until proven guilty and does not have to resign. He can stand in the election and, if he pulls together a majority coalition, can become prime minister. After the election, Netanyahu will be entitled to a hearing and then the Attorney General will make a final decision to indict. The case would proceed to a criminal trial and, if found guilty, Netanyahu could be forced to resign, but this could take more than two years. The political impact was immediate as polls showed Likud in second place to Gantz and Lapid for the first time. But the smaller parties on the right are stronger, and Likud could scrape together a fragile coalition. With Bibi in a weak position, the smaller parties will demand a very high price to stick with him if his case proceeds to trial. With five weeks until polling day, Gantz and Lapid’s clearest route to power is to win over a chunk of moderate Likud voters appalled by the corruption cases and receptive to their joint ticket. Bibi is under immense personal pressure and facing strong opponents who match him easily with their security experience. His campaign rhetoric is increasingly divisive and toxic in a desperate attempt to fire up his base. This may be Bibi’s last act, but one thing is certain: with his record of electoral success, it’s far too early to count him out.

Israel – from 23,360 miles away! Israel’s tiny Moon-bound spacecraft, named Beresheet, (Hebrew for Genesis) posted its first selfie this week – 23,360 miles from Earth. The spacecraft, which is currently orbiting the Earth before it enters its final
trajectory, sent the photo back to engineers in Yehud, Israel. Beresheet is Israel’s first major space exploration programme and a successful touchdown on the Earth’s satellite would be a first for
a privately-funded initiative, because all past Moon landings were paid for by nation states. Last week, Israeli engineers tinkered with the craft’s trajectory and mechanics, performing
“computer resets” and “corrective measures” in which Beresheet’s engine was activated for four minutes to put it back on its way to the Moon in an elliptical orbit, where the farthest point from Earth is 81,300 miles away.
Google launches inventive exhibit The National Library of Israel (NLI) has joined an international project run by Google to launch an enormous online exhibition of the world’s greatest discoveries and inventions. Among the material it has made available to the internet giant are thousands of pages of hand-written manuscripts by British scientist Sir Isaac Newton, ancient maps of Jerusalem, and unique texts from Sidney Edelstein, a chemist who charted the race to master red dye. They form part of Google Arts and Culture’s new Once Upon a Try exhibition, featuring collections, stories and knowledge from more than 110 institutions across 23 countries, highlighting humanity’s major breakthroughs and those making them. Users can dive into an interactive world encompassing CERN’s Large Hadron Collider and experience life on-board the International Space Station, while navigating Middle Age terrains and original letters from great minds such as Albert Einstein. NLI director Oren Weinberg said it was imperative to use “innovative methods to open universal, digital access to historic treasures”. Amit Sood, director of Google Arts & Culture, said: “We invite everyone to participate in the first phase of an online collection that celebrates innovation and science. Through inspiring and at times surprising stories, you can explore the inventions and discoveries that have shaped our world.”

Schindler’s belongings expected to fetch £19k
Schindler’s Longines wristwatch and a compass said to have been used by the Holocaust hero while fleeing Russian troops in 1945
Personal items belonging to Oskar Schindler, the German businessman credited with saving the lives of more than 1,000 Jews during the Holocaust, are set to fetch £19,000 at auction this week. Schindler’s remarkable act of saving lives by employing Jews to work in his enamelware and ammunition factories was recounted in the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark by Australian author Thomas Keneally and became the basis of Steven Spielberg’s multi Oscar-winning Schindler’s List in 1993. Among the Schindler items included in the sale from RR Auction in Boston are his Longines wristwatch, featuring a white face with gold-tone hands and time markers, silver-tone case, and black leather strap, as well as a compass manufactured by Bezard/Gotthilf Lufft, said
to have been used by Schindler and his wife Emilie while fleeing Russian troops and heading for American occupied territory in 1945. The lot also includes a 1938 Sudetenland Medal awarded to Schindler, who had aided in the annexation and occupation of the Sudetenland as a spy for the German government. Two fountain pens in a hinged Parker case belonging to Schindler and a thin wooden business card, giving his address as Frankfurt am Main, where he moved in 1957 are also going under the hammer. FRENCH RABBI WARNS COMMUNITY IS FLEEING A French rabbi this week warned that half of his regular congregants have been driven out of the city by antisemitism. “It’s a troubling phenomenon that began about 15 years ago,” Rabbi Nissim Sultan from Grenoble in eastern France said in an interview with the Bleu Isère radio station. “I mean the departure of half the people who make up the core of our community. They left to Israel, elsewhere in France, the United States and Canada.” Each antisemitic graffiti, he said, “raises awareness to a global reality that means we fear for our children at school, on the street. So as responsible parents, we take measures.” Grenoble, an eastern city of 160,000 near Lyon, has several hundred Jews. Approximately 20,000 French Jews have left for Israel since 2014, a major increase over the previous

Special Report / Eilat breakthrough
Fresh hope for coral reefs An Israel discovery could offer a glimmer of hope for the world’s dwindling coral reefs. As the outlook for reefs across a warming planet grows grimmer, experts in Israel have found corals of the northern Red Sea may survive, and even thrive, into the next century. There is broad scientific consensus that the effects of climate change have devastated the world’s reefs. Sky News this week reported how rising sea temperatures are having a huge impact on the reefs surrounding the islands of the Seychelles. The broadcaster was taken to Cousin Island by the environmental organisation Nature Seychelles, where it found the surrounding reefs are being “reduced to rubble” by warming waters. “The coral is dead. Most of the fish long gone. It’s a graveyard, and climate change is the cause,” Sky News said. Studies published in the journal Science say carbon dioxide that humans pump into the atmosphere spikes the temperature and acidity of seawater, which both poisons the marine invertebrates and hampers their growth at alarming rates. But the corals at the northern-
most tip of the Red Sea are exhibiting remarkable resistance to the rising water temperatures and acidification, according to research conducted by the Eilat-based Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences. Experts hope the lessons learned in the Red Sea can help coral reefs elsewhere in the world. Warmer water causes corals to eject the brightly coloured plants that serve as their primary food and oxygen source, causing reefs to “bleach”, or turn bone-white. “We have not witnessed a single bleaching event in the Gulf of Aqaba,” said Maoz Fine, an expert on coral reefs at Bar-Ilan University and director of the research. While other hardy coral species can be found in the Indian and Pacific oceans, Fine said “nowhere else in the world are reefs this far away from their bleaching thresholds”. He said plenty of other refuges remain unknown, but “this is the only spot we know of with a warranty ensuring these reefs stay safe for the next several decades”. At the lab, Fine examined coral fragments in water treated to simulate future global scenarios, pointing to their ruddy colour as a sign of good
Coral – the brighter the colour, the healthier the reef
health. The Gulf of Aqaba has become a refuge for tough corals projected to outlast far worse future conditions. Fine’s latest study, just published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, found further cause for optimism – the coral species’ thermal resistance carries over to their offspring, indicating that future generations will also remain immune to bleaching, with implications that could extend beyond the Red Sea.
His research credits northern Red Sea coral resilience to a natural selection event some 18,000 years ago as glaciers retreated at the end of the Ice Age and reefs moved in to recolonise the southern part of the sea, where temperatures ran exceedingly high. Only corals that could bear the heat managed to reach maturity and migrate north, where they resettled in conditions several degrees cooler than their thermal threshold.
Further research is under way to determine how existing in temperatures below their tolerance levels may lend corals physiological benefits. “All corals were obliterated except for the best genotypes, the winners of the climate change lottery,” Fine said. Today, these hardy corals continue to survive as Red Sea waters warm. “Not only does this give us an incentive to protect this special refuge as much as possible, but also allows us to find hints as to the most important genes for thermal resistance,” he said. Some cutting-edge labs in Hawaii and Australia have even started crossbreeding corals that have survived or recovered from mass bleaching to create gene banks of “super-corals” that they hope can survive future elevated temperatures. Jacqueline De La Cour, operations manager for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch, said: “If corals are surviving and reproducing in the Gulf of Aqaba under stressful conditions, we can reseed the hardy corals in nearby bleached areas.” “Entirely new ecosystems that can withstand climate change would be established.”

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
The real Pius XII The Vatican is to be applauded for agreeing to open its secret archives on Pius XII, aka ‘Hitler’s Pope’. Independent researchers can now verify the Catholic Church’s claims that Pius did all he could to defend Europe’s Jews during the Holocaust. That Pius saved Jewish lives or supported the German Resistance to Nazism is not questioned by most historians. But there remains the lingering suspicion that he didn’t go far enough, once he knew genocide was taking place. Jewish groups have said Pius was uniquely placed to persuade Hitler against pursuing his final solution – or to persuade Europeans not to support it – by speaking out against it publicly at the time, something Pius never did. Pius had been papal nuncio to Germany before he was elected pope in 1939, so he had connections. Moreover, Hitler had been raised a Catholic and millions of people in both Germany and occupied areas such as Poland and Austria were practicing Catholics. Had Pius spoken, they’d have listened, so goes the argument. But no one knows for sure. The debate has raged for years, with no lack of sympathy – Jews know the Church had its own problems, with priests being rounded up to such an extent that there was even a special clergy barracks at Dachau. As such, Jewish groups have reserved judgement, but have never stopped asking for access to evidence that would either clear Pius’s name or show that he could have done more. They will now have their chance. It will tell us, once and for all, what Pius did or didn’t do – and when. If it shows that he genuinely did everything he could, Jews around the world would have no problem with this late pope’s path to sainthood. SWEET SOUND OF OUR FUTURE I applaud the Chief Rabbi‘s innovative idea to teach children a new melody for Lecha Dodi (Come My Beloved), uniting us in song for last weekend’s Shabbat UK. Twenty-seven participating primary schools sang and danced happily and excitedly, meaningfully waving Israeli flags. The pride in their heritage was evident on their young faces. One could not but be moved to witness the abundant joy, love and excitement in the various rooms with the Chief Rabbi taking centre stage, the catalyst, encouraging exuberance. Furthermore, to see the children in action

YOUR COLUMNIST REVEALS A BLIND SPOT ON ISRAEL
‘I know you don’t approve, Mr Lammy, but people have been so moved by the sight of the feeble, bewildered fellow that we’ve received a huge increase in donations... to the Labour Party!’
I refer to the column published in Jewish News on 28 February by Noah Libson of Yachad regarding support for Israel. This somewhat naïve article states that our backing for Israel should never be blind. However, it is Yachad that has a blind spot because it cannot see, due to its self-righteousness, that it provides fuel for the enemies of Israel. Criticism of the Israeli Government is alive and kicking in Israel, thank you very much. It does not need a boost by Jewish organisations outside Israel by hoodwinked individuals who do not lead their daily lives

singing this catchy tune in our shul, Edgware United, on Friday night, touched our hearts and enhanced the evening service in an amazing manner. in the country. Such people do not know the full circumstances of politics, security and the many factors that shape Israeli life. I suggest Mr Libson would do better to criticise governments of other regimes in the world, such as Syria, Iran, Yemen etc., which are far worse, or even, dare I say it, the UK Government. As usual, the Yachad article was one sided. It mentioned groups such as Breaking the Silence, but omitted to mention Reservists on Duty or My Truth – groups with quite a different persepctive on the issue.

He’s up my street I take issue with Alexander Sussman’s unjust criticism of Ilford North MP Wes Streeting for “not attending an important debate on antisemitism in the commons” (Jewish News, 28 February). Since his election to Parliament in 2015, Mr Streeting has been an excellent MP for this area, speaking on many subjects, including Jewish affairs. I am sure he had a perfectly
valid reason for not being able to attend [Editor’s comment: He was on a foreign trip at the time of the debate]. As far as the comment that “residents will show their feelings at the ballot box” because Mr Streeting did not attend, it will make little difference in Mr Sussman’s case. I’m willing to bet he’s never voted Labour.

LET’S BE MORE FORGIVING Week after week, I read in Jewish News about antisemitism in Mr Corbyn’s Labour Party. I also read about Mr Netanyahu’s alleged corruption. Mr Corbyn and his support of Hezbollah frightens me and many other Jews I have spoken to. Instead of criticising Israel, maybe we should be a little more forgiving, and a lot more supportive. I am not saying we should condone corrup-
tion anywhere, but perhaps Mr Netanyahu deserves a bit more consideration than Mr Corbyn. Israel must be there should we ever feel the need to leave the UK. If that time comes, Mr Netanyahu or any other Israeli prime minister could easily become my best friend, whatever might emerge from the present investigation.

YOUR BEGUM CARTOON WAS IN POOR TASTE The cartoon published in Jewish News last week concerning the case of Shamima Begum was in poor taste. I’m aware a similar cartoon appeared in The Times with Jeremy Corbyn launched into space in Israel’s moon rocket. That could be considered fair game, since Mr Corbyn’s party’s antisemitism is a cause that directly concerns Israel. Shamima Begum, on the other hand, is a young girl with a small baby in a hostile refugee camp.

LET’S BE UNAPOLOGETIC What is it with Jews who constantly denigrate the world’s only Jewish state? Israel is central to our religion. Israel is our historic homeland, our present homeland, and future homeland too. The Board of Deputies, the Jewish Leadership Council, and even (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) the Zionist Federation appear to have been infiltrated and subverted by the left. I am fed up with the left being given a platform, while true
unapologetic Zionism in the guise of Herut is denied a platform on campuses across our country. Enough already. It is time for the vast silent majority of Jews, those of us who have Israel in our hearts, to loudly stand up and take back the ground lost to the left. Let us proudly say that whether Israel elects a right-wing, a leftwing or a centrist government at the next election, we shall remain unapologetic Zionists.

The Hezbollah problem We must, of course, welcome the decision by the UK’s home secretary to designate the entire Hezbollah organisation a terrorist entity It was, of course, interesting to see the reaction of Jeremy Corbyn and his Labour Party to this longoverdue announcement. However, it was tinged with disappointment, as owing to Mr Cor-
byn’s well-documented vocal and otherwise support of this entity, any punishment is unlikely to be levied retrospectively. The possibility of Mr Corbyn having to languish in prison for up to 10 years conjures up an image well worth savouring.

No better time for the Westminster memorial ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
T
here could not be a more appropriate time for work to begin building on the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation’s national monument to the Shoah in Westminster. The British Jewish community is in a high state of anxiety at present. The Jewish press is filled with reports of antisemitic incidents recalling, on a small scale, the type of attacks Jews faced in the 1930s. That is frightening enough and it is possible to console oneself with the knowledge that there have always been extremist elements in the UK, but physical assaults are comparatively rare. What’s far more disturbing is the way Labour has become a refuge for antisemitic and anti-Zionist behaviour. It is disgusting that the language of the Holocaust is deployed to demonise Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. It is bleakly disturbing that the ‘independent’ group of MPs placed antisemitism at the centre of
their reasons for leaving Labour. The very idea that Tom Watson, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, felt the need to set himself up as a monitor of how the party is dealing with antisemitic complaints tells its own story. Labour has been slow and ineffectual, and the party’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism has been quickly forgotten. Britain made mistakes in relations to Jews and then Palestine in the run-up to, and during, the Second World War. More, for instance, could have been done in the conduct of the conflict, such as bombing rail connections to the death camps. But we should never forget that it was British troops who liberated Bergen-Belsen, that it was a British journalist, Richard Dimbleby, who brought the horrors of the death camps to our screens. And that Britain opened its arms to children of the doomed when it provided the Kindertransport. The great debates of the war were held at Westminster and war strategy set at the nearby Cabinet War Rooms. If there is to be a national memorial,
❝
IT IS ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE THAT A NATIONAL MEMORIAL SHOULD BE ADJACENT TO PARLIAMENT it is entirely appropriate that it should be adjacent to Parliament. This especially so at a moment when Jeremy Corbyn, Chris Williamson, and others feel that their role as MPs gives them the right to make the lives of one of Britain’s longest established and most loyal minorities feel like outsiders. The most serious objections to the memorial come from two quarters. The first is the Royal Parks, which has a role in protecting green spaces in London. It suggests the memorial will have an impact on a ‘popular public amenity’ space in an area where there are few public parks. That is balderdash. Within a stone’s
throw of the proposed site are other green spaces at College Green and Parliament Square, St James’s Park and Green Park. As an amenity, the proposed memorial, the result of a bipartisan commission’s findings, will provide more amenity than a scrubby lawn. The second ‘public’ objector is an adviser to Unesco on World Heritage Sites. Its intervention is so predictable it is almost risible. Unesco has an appalling record of antiIsrael behaviour, including the passage of resolutions denying Jewish links to Western Wall. It also comes from the same family of UN agencies as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which has just berated Israel for shooting protesters on the Gaza border. Israel’s treatment of the Gaza protesters could be described as heavy-handed. But to put in in perspective, it is as nothing compared to genocide taken place not many kilometres away in Syria. In today’s febrile antisemitic atmosphere, the symbolism of a ‘never forget’ memorial, right next to the mother of parliaments, could not be more potent.
On abuse, we haven’t even started talking YEHUDIS FLETCHER

I
live my life fairly publicly in some respects, hoping people learn from the mistakes made when I was sexually abused by Todros Grynhaus. I hope that by speaking out about how I have been affected by abuse, educators, leaders statutory workers and members of the public will recognise red flags people ignored when I was younger. I hope they make different decisions from those made when I was a child, decisions that culminated in further abuse being perpetrated on other victims long after I had blown the whistle. I know by putting my experiences in the public sphere, I am giving people permission to talk about them. I also know not everyone has the benefit of the information I have, and not everyone sees things the way I do. I don’t encourage gossip or lashon hara, but I do encourage constructive debate and questioning. I speak and write publicly, not because I think everyone should agree with
me but because we haven’t even started the conversation yet. Brave survivors from the charedi community have put three charedi men in prison in the past four years, one after the other. As a community, we’ve not talked about this. We need considerate, empathetic dialogue that listens carefully to both survivors and professionals. It’s not enough to dot i’s and cross t’s on policies. Until we talk, we won’t be introspective. Until we talk, we won’t heal. Until we talk, we can’t stop it from happening again. Lots of people see me writing and talking about abuse, and are shocked and upset. They know me, they believe me, and they now have to process this happened to someone they know. Someone whose childhood they were part of. Someone who doesn’t fit the stereotype they might have had in their mind of what an abuse survivor should sound like and look like. So they reach out. They want to talk. They message me on Facebook, or Twitter. They say they’ve heard me speak, or that they have read something I have written. Most people say, “I’m so sorry.” I never

WE NEED DIALOGUE THAT LISTENS TO BOTH SURVIVORS AND PROFESSIONALS
know how to answer. “Thank you” doesn’t make sense. I don’t need to thank people for their sympathy. I say “Thank you for listening” or “Thank you for reading my work.” I don’t think people realise when they do this they put their burden on to me. They may not do it intentionally, but most people who contact me in this way want something from me. They want me to make them feel better. They want reassurance I don’t count them among those who were guilty of being silent bystanders. Guilty of the biblical commandment ‘lo sa’amod al dam re’echa’, do not stand on your brother’s blood. There is also the minority of people who absolutely have done something wrong. They know they are on the wrong side of this
fight but because they know me and believe me, they want to reach out and convince me (and themselves) they are circumspect, and nuanced, and want me to know they definitely do condemn real abuse, like my abuse. They just don’t want to condemn the abuser they love. Or the abuser they respect. Or the abuser in whose abuse they might have been complicit. Or the abuser they want to be able to continue to expose their children to. They want me to somehow help them to feel better about that, so they reach out and tell me how sorry they are. I don’t want their sympathy. I want their learning. We need to talk but it needs to be a responsible, constructive conversation. That means coming from a starting point where we accept baselines, the first of which is that abuse can be perpetrated by people you know, trust and love – most abuse is perpetrated by a person the victim knows. The second is that abusers groom their victims into compliance. By the time abuse happens the psychological effects of grooming mean victims often don’t say no, and don’t tell anyone what has happened. Let the conversation begin...

Things we still can’t say about inequality JUDITH FLACKS-LEIGH HEAD OF COMMUNICATIONS & CAMPAIGNS, JEWISH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
N
early 18 months since the #Metoo movement emerged, companies and organisations have begun to take a much closer look at their own policies on sexual harassment and gender equality. The Jewish community is not immune from having these issues, and it is something the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) is looking at closely. Despite the #MeToo movement ripping off the initial plaster, we still hear plenty of anecdotes from women who privately describe what they can and cannot say about sexual harassment and gender equality in the workplace. The first step is to update workplace policies and to set up the parameters for women to flourish in the workplace. Nevertheless, even when workplace policies are updated, and employees have been repeatedly told that
forthcoming concerns and complaints will not be ignored, it means very little if there is a looming threat of repercussions. We may be moving past the initial shock of gender inequalities and lack of reporting mechanisms for sexual harassment, but we find ourselves trying to navigate a space where employers have to balance workplace policies with a culture of openness, understanding and flexibility. If there is no culture in which people feel safe to talk about their experiences and needs without being fearful of professional repercussions, what is the point? Are we failing to make written policies work before the ink has even dried? The frustrating reality is that most women still cannot talk about gender inequality at work too much. We cannot be too critical of male-only spaces and highlight conversations that women are cut out of; we cannot talk too much about how difficult it might be to juggle care responsibilities, a challenge women typically face more than men. Why? It might make our employers, previous employers, colleagues (past, current
❝
WHEN #METOO KICKED OFF, IT FELT LIKE A WEIGHT HAD BEEN LIFTED FOR MANY
and future) very uncomfortable to think that we could be talking about them and possibly even more uncomfortable to think that there might be more they could do to understand and help. When #MeToo kicked off, for many people it felt like a weight had been lifted; that finally, taboo topics of sexual harassment, gender discrimination and inequality were out in the open, laid bare for everyone to see, to analyse, to reflect on and to address. But on closer inspection, things are still not really out in the open. We don’t want to highlight the gender-related issues women face every day. Women don’t want to be treated differently and not get the promotion or be
criticised for being critical and thought of as ‘slacking off’ if they need to work flexibly for care-giving. The reflectiveness needed by our managers and colleagues to address this issue from all angles is the piece that still needs to be grasped. The theme of International Women’s Day this year is ‘Balance for Better’, and we have to ask what exactly it is we are trying to balance. The JLC’s event to mark International Women’s Day (tomorrow) this year took a deeper look at this question. The balance between policy and culture is one we also have to address so women can actually talk about the things they feel like they still cannot say. This is a challenge for our community as much as it is elsewhere. Even when looking for examples of companies or organisations that show best practice in the area, it would seem there are few we could call on to lead the way. At the JLC, we hope that by having the conversation about what balancing policy and culture in the workplace looks like, it will lead to meaningful change for women working in Jewish communal organisations.

Sexual harrassment in the Jewish community NAOMI DICKSON
CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JEWISH WOMEN’S AID
H
as the #MeToo moment passed? Is it just a hashtag that captured a moment or has there been real change in how we deal with sexual harassment? In partnership with the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council, I am proud that Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA) is launching a new project to create and embed a culture in Jewish organisations where harassment is not tolerated. The project will enable organisations to hold up the mirror to their own practices, and we will help them to develop their policies and processes through HR and training tools, to inform a culture change. At a time when the government has been criticised for not moving fast enough in its response to #MeToo and where industry is waking up to the need for effective sexual harassment policies, we have an amazing opportunity to be trail blazers in this area. Based on an American Jewish model,
B’Kavod, run by New York movement Gam Ani, this project will send a clear message that our Jewish community doesn’t tolerate sexual harassment, and that we are equipped to deal with it. Supported by professionals, we will train organisations from the top down and ensure that a whole-organisation approach is adopted in response to all forms of harassment. For almost 30 years, Jewish Women’s Aid has worked across the breadth of the Jewish community with women affected by domestic and sexual violence and abuse, bringing a feminist understanding of domestic abuse, and a culturally specific understanding of the needs of the women who reach out to us for help. Recently, JWA and our sector have
❝
OUR USERS HAVE WAITED ON AVERAGE 11.5 YEARS BEFORE SEEKING HELP – TWO YEARS MORE THAN THE NATIONAL FIGURE been moving towards an approach where we work with all forms of violence against women and girls. This new project therefore fits firmly within our remit. I am proud Jewish Women’s Aid holds the prestigious Quality Standard accreditation from our national body Women’s Aid, celebrating the high quality of our work. We will, of course, work on our new sexual harassment project and other new areas of work to the same high standard. We know that JWA’s service users have waited on average a shocking 11.5 years before seeking help – this is higher than the national average by more than two years. They delay calling us for a range of reasons – shame, humiliation, lack of options, children,
money – but they also delay because of community-related factors: they sometimes tell us that their perpetrator is influential and well-known, that he is powerful and has threatened financial ruin or lack of access to children. Some of these factors may well be similar for women in Jewish communal organisations who are reluctant to disclose sexual harassment. We are sensitive to these, we understand them, and are well-placed to support Jewish organisations on their way through this complicated but important issue. Through this project, we have an opportunity to set a benchmark in our good practice around sexual harassment and send out a clear message that it’s not tolerated in our community.

Henry Proffit and Ruby Bentall in rehearsal for The Rubenstein Kiss
‘No one knows the truth’ Francine Wolfisz speaks to Ruby Bentall about her latest role based on the real-life couple executed for spying for the Soviets
S
uspicion, espionage, betrayal and guilt may sound like the makings of a gripping thriller, but for all its dramatic imaginings, The Rubenstein Kiss is based on the true story of one Jewish couple, who were controversially convicted of spying for the Soviet Union. During the height of the Cold War in the 1950s and the hysteria of McCarthyism, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who lived in New York and identified with the communist cause, were accused of heading up a spy ring that passed on sensitive information about the atomic bomb. Despite protesting their innocence to the last, they were convicted and sent to the electric chair on 19 June 1953. Their intriguing story is now brought to life in a revival of James Phillips’ award-winning play, which opens at Southwark Playhouse next week. Poldark actress Ruby Bentall takes on the role of Esther Rubenstein (based on Ethel), opposite Henry Proffit as her husband Jakob (Julius), alongside Sean Rigby and Stephen Billington. Speaking during a break from rehearsals, the 30-year-old actress says her interest was piqued by the play’s exploration of the reasons behind Esther and Jakob’s treacherous actions. She explains: “You can get the facts, but
the motivation for what they did is not so easy to find. It was so dramatic what they gave up and hard to understand how their belief in the communist cause was so strong that they would just die for it. As an actress, it was challenging to get into the mindset of why someone would do that.” In the play, Esther is portrayed as a typical Jewish wife who is “incredibly warm, gregarious, loves family and having people over”. But there is another side to her as well, says Bentall. “Underneath all that, she’s also very clever, strong-willed and if anyone hurts her family, she will fight to the death for them and what she believes in. She comes across as a really lovely, sweet woman, but cross her and she’ll be incredibly tough.” As for her love for husband Jakob, Bentall is clear that Esther not only looks up to him as “the most intelligent, brilliant man” capable of firing up others to support the communist cause, but she is also someone who is by no means the meek and subservient wife. “Any time he has any doubt, Esther is the one who convinces him that he’s doing the right thing. It seems like he’s at the forefront, but actually she’s the puppet master pulling all the strings.” More than 60 years after they were executed, the Rosenbergs’ sons, Michael and
Left: Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, as portrayed in the play, above
Robert, continue to campaign on their parents’ behalf. With the emergence of supporting evidence, they accept that Julius was guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage, although not of atomic spying, and assert that Ethel was only generally aware of his activities. They argue their father did not deserve the death penalty and that their mother was wrongly convicted and should be posthumously exonerated. Bentall agrees that “no one knows the exact truth”, but adds that the play does throw up questions over whether they should have faced execution. “Their punishment was so extreme people thought they were being used as scapegoats,” adds Bentall. “It was completely out of proportion to what they had been caught doing, particularly Ethel, and there are many who believe they were used as publicity by the American Government as a show of strength
during the Cold War.” Alongside misplaced fears, paranoia and a battle of ideologies, the play also looks at how nuclear weapons have been used as a consistent threat by warring governments – something Bentall sees as being just as pertinent to today’s world, as that of the one inhabited by the Rosenbergs more than six decades ago. “We now know so much more about these weapons and yet we still fight over whether they could be a good thing, which is crazy,” asserts Bentall. “We never seem to learn anything. It really does feel at times like history is just repeating itself.” The Rubenstein Kiss runs from 14 March to 13 April at Southwark Playhouse, Newington Causeway. Details: southwarkplayhouse.co.uk

So why not pop by, say ‘hi’, have a cupcake and then work it off in the charity’s heart-racing Rollapaluza competition, where participants battle it out on stationary bikes over a sprint distance at speeds in excess of 50mph. Accompanied by music, MC and cheering crowds, you’ll hear them before you see them! It has also organised some pretty cool prizes, such as a Garmin Edge Touring Plus (a bike-specific navigation system) and Moov Now sports and activity tracker for the person crowned Rollapaluza champion. In fact, Norwood is overjoyed at the fact that all of the cupcakes it’ll have at The Big Family Show & Expo will have been entirely made in that very kitchen by some of its best budding chefs. The charity isn’t ashamed to say that it loves what it does – it’s Norwood’s passion. And for those in the midst of planning a big event and can’t wait until our show in November, there are representatives from event companies, stationary, photography and fashion – notably the gorgeous Rebecca Rinder of Hadley Bridal Collection, who will be on hand with suitable dresses to kit out eager batmitzvah shoppers. Thanks to the planning of JLGB, the younger visitors won’t have a dull moment – Laser Quest, green screen and puppetry – and Flip Out also has big plans for small children. To host an event with such a wide range of exhibitors means there is hopefully something for everyone – particularly food.

Marvellous MalaMala! Out in the wilds of the African bush, Sharon Feinstein takes a walk among the animals on the ‘trip of a lifetime’
T
hunder crashed through the bush all night, like the beat of African drums, while rain pounded rhythmically on the tin roof of our apartment. At dawn we stood on the broad terrace of Rattray’s safari lodge facing the wide river bed with its first pools of water, the sky the colour of purple pressed grapes. Our soft-spoken, knowledgeable guide, Gordon, grabbed his shotgun and prepared the Land Rover with blankets and flasks of water. For two days, I had Gordon to myself as we weaved through the spiky acacia and mahogany trees, the air fragrant with scent and iridescent butterflies. Of all the camps in southern Africa, there’s nothing to touch Rattray’s for game viewing, attention to detail and tasteful luxury. There are only eight rooms, a world-class chef, and a unique setting on the banks of the Sand River. When you return from a long game-viewing drive, there’s the offer of a deep massage and a cooling swimming pool. Out here in the plains of South Africa, we are hundreds of miles from the closest Jewish communities in Pretoria and Johannesburg, the latter boasting the largest Jewish population in the country and an extraordinarily moving Holocaust museum. Here, in the land of the safari, animals move slowly across the hush of the bush and it all seems completely still until you spot the giraffe, zebra, buffalo and slow lumbering elephants. Tawny eagles are diving through the sky. The impala, living under constant threat, jerk their heads at every sound. I longed to see a leopard, the aloof, majestic animal that walks alone. We rounded a bend and there she was, perched on high rocks watching three cheetah eat an impala they had just caught. Four cats in one sighting, which soon turned even more dramatic as the King stood on the horizon gazing across at the gathering vultures, realising there was food. Within minutes, the beautifully-built male
lion charged, scattering the vultures and chasing away the three cheetah. He picked up the carcass, his muzzle soon covered in blood, and settled under a tree to eat. The death of the impala brings life to the lion for another day. National parks can have up to 20 vehicles at a sighting, but MalaMala won’t allow more than three, so the animals are never crowded. Gordon, who has been at Rattray’s MalaMala for 11 years, tells me: “Animals live in the moment in their daily struggle to find food, water and protect themselves. “There’s no thought of future or past, it’s only the present, and a lot of people have lost touch with that. “Watching them teaches us to cherish what is important in life right now, not what might be happening next week.” Reflecting on what he has observed over the years among the animals, he adds: “Elephants and primates are the most emotional creatures, and feel a great sense of loss when their young die. “Impala will forget they’ve had a baby within ten minutes of it getting caught by a lion, while a female baboon will pick up the dead baby and carry it with her, sometimes for days. “There’s no real sympathy or feeling for the animal being killed. All they see is food, survival. We are the same. That’s the animal side to us.” A highlight always on any safari is seeing the big five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo – but there’s a special award given at this
camp, a certificate for the MalaMala Seven, and I was hugely fortunate to receive it. That’s because we found the three cheetah and a pack of African wild dogs and their babies. I first visited MalaMala, one of the oldest private reserves and the most professional, years ago with Rod Stewart and his then girlfriend. This time, as the orange sun streaked the sky behind the thorny acacias, Gordon stopped the Land Rover and served chilled wine and snacks. We listened to the lilting sound of the wood owl and watched saddle-billed storks. The privilege of being in a camp like this won’t last, with the threat of sophisticated poaching, population expansion and drought. It’s a piece of forgotten paradise and a trip of a lifetime that has forever changed my life.

SEDRA Pekudei
BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Pekudei means accounts, referring to the inventory required to furnish the Tabernacle, drawing it together into one piece and make it one whole structure. The detail on the High Priest’s vestments reflects the tribal glory of Israel. For example, the choshen (breastplate) carried a semi-precious stone for each of the twelve sons of Jacob. Divine counsel was applied for by the priest, who received messages from Above when wearing this adornment, which he then had to interpret. Tradition teaches that when Hannah, future mother of Samuel the prophet, was praying for a child before God at the Temple in Shiloh, Eli the High Priest consulted God and received a message indicating Hannah was drunk. He misunderstood the letters that appeared to him to spell shikorah “drunkard” instead of kesherah, “fit and proper”. This reflection on the use of the breastplate, behind which were kept Divine names, teaches the importance of seeing the best in co-citizens, without which even Divine inspiration will not help to achieve the truth we seek. Moses dedicates his brother Aaron and his sons to Divine service. During the 40 years of wandering in the desert, that cloud (Divine presence) lifted above the sanctuary to lead the Israelites on their journeys, appearing as a pillar of fire by night. The Haftara (Ashkenazic custom) recounts the First Temple’s completion and Solomon’s plea to God that the prayers of all worshippers should be heard. Sephardim read about Hiram’s efforts in building the Solomonic temple and its glorious adornments and exquisite construction.

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND “And the land was unformed and empty… ”(Genesis 1.2) This short phrase in the Creation narrative presents us with the abyss: the words tohu v’vohu are intensely difficult to translate. In the words of Rashi, at the formation of the world we look over the precipice, “with astonishment and bafflement” (trans. Sapirstein). The primordial nothingness – the nihilo from which the world was created – cannot be directly described, but is merely described in terms of the human response, and not as an existential state. The concept of zero is relatively modern in human thought; it is a 16th century word. Humanity preferred to talk in terms of “nothing” – no-thing. In Hebrew, too, the word for zero,
❝
efes, translates in Biblical Hebrew better as “but”. It is not really nature that abhors a vacuum, but people: a gap beckons, it demands; yet we do not have the capacity to be everywhere, to be everything. And in that gap we feel our painful limitations,

our mortality. Kaballah – the Jewish mystical tradition – is acutely cognisant of this gap. The Infinite God is referred to as Ein Sof – “No Limit”: the complex unfolding of Divinity from its Highest Realms to this world revolves around the relationship of the Ani- the Hebrew word for “I”, to the Ein – nothingness, to the Ein Sof. Kaballah does not believe in a “God of the gaps”; it believes that God is the gaps; not only does God transcend this universe, but is intimately involved in every aspect and facet. In the words of the great Chasidic master the Kotzker Rav, “God is wherever you let Him in”. We can be terrified of the gaps; we do not know what is lurking in the space between atoms, between existence itself. We can, however, seek out God in these zeros: from this, we can find our own sense of self – our Ani – and help bring sanctity to wherever we can. The Bible Says What?
Progressively Speaking
‘We should sprinkle blood on our clergy’
Following the scandal at Essex University, why are Jewish societies on campus important?
BY RABBI SANDRA KVIAT “Slaughter the ram and take some of its blood and put it on the ridges of Aaron’s right ear and on the ridges of his sons’ right ears, and on the thumbs of their right hand, and on the big toes of their right feet; and dash the rest of the blood against every side of the altar.” (Exodus 29.20) To modern eyes, this is a very odd ritual – the sprinkling of blood on the extremities of a handful of priests and the altar. Why the ear, finger and toe? A common-sense midrash teaches that the ear symbolises the ability to listen to people, the thumb the actions we take, and the toe how we make our way in the world. They are all pointing to the priest as a person who needs to be attuned to others around them, gentle and considerate. Another way of looking at it is that the ear, finger, toe and the
surrounds of the altar are all the boundaries of our bodies and of sacred space. The story teaches the importance of having a sacred space and knowing why it is sacred and shows the rituals needed before we use the space, to get us in tune with what can happen in it. It reminds me of a key part of the hugely popular decluttering show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, where Kondo finds a place in the house, sits down quietly, meditates and asks everyone to appreciate the space they are in. For me, this Torah commandment is the biblical way of sitting down and meditating, thanking the altar and the space around it. And the blood? That’s just our modern discomfort with what the ancients saw as the ultimate lifeforce – a form of spiritual superdetergent. Sandra Kviat is rabbi at Crouch End Chavurah
BY RABBI DANIEL LICHMAN At Essex University, a small group of Jewish students attempted to set up a Jewish Society. They were met with a campaign against them. After lonely, confusing and frightening days for the Jewish student leaders, there was national publicity about this display of antiJewish attitudes and the university leadership stepped in. The officials ratified the Jewish Society and organised a public display of solidarity. I was present as 500 people came and stood beside our community. We listened to a number of speakers and I found myself touched by such a show of solidarity extended to our community. Amy-Julie Fogiel, the president of the new JSoc, delivered an inspiring address. She is 18 years old and had arrived in the UK from France to study at the university. She explained to the gathered crowd how precious her Jewish
identity is to her. I found myself inspired by her courage and determination and was simultaneously furious that a young Jewish woman was put in a position where she had to fight to be able to organise Jewish life on campus. The vice-chancellor, Anthony Forster, impressed in the way he took responsibility for what had happened. Without any caveats and without defensiveness, he acknowledged the incident had taken place under his watch. This is a model of leadership that embodies the mishnaic principle that in a place where there is no leader, be a leader (Pirke Avot 2:5). As a senior leader of his institution, he unambiguously signalled the commitment of his organisation to challenging antisemitism. Finally, I was touched by the leader of the students’ union, Tancrede Chartier. In his speech, he acknowledged that this moment
was in fact the beginning of a conversation. There was much more for him and his fellow students to learn about antisemitism and about the lived experience of their fellow Jewish students. In another mishnah, we learn after a list of righteous acts that “the study of Torah leads to them all” (Peah 1:1). Learning is paramount. It enables the understanding that can lead to morally upstanding action. When I think of the possible responses to antisemitism that we have seen in public life, I do not find myself reassured by the violent language of ‘eradicating’ or ‘destroying’ antisemitism. Instead, Forster and Chartier offer a more hopeful way forward: taking responsibility and being open to learn. Rabbi Daniel Lichman is the chaplain for Progressive Jewish students

Dear Janine Whether you run a busy office or an even busier household, most people find themselves with a collection of old tech that they have no idea what to do with. As the world is rightfully shifting towards having a strong focus on eco-friendly activity, throwing old tech in the bin is not the answer for you, as old batteries can be dangerous to the environment. It’s possible to sell old tech but, often, auction website fees mean it’s not worth the hassle. So, what is the answer? Well... one of my companies, Alfonica – a sister company to RCUK – has developed a solution for
this problem, which could help you too. Alfonica is a corporate partner of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and, together, the brands have launched a campaign called ‘Clear out your Clutter’ – this is where Alfonica recycles people’s old tech and turns it into cash for GOSH. Alfonica is delivering collection points to offices up and down the UK, into which people can drop old tech. When offices take part, they are helping colleagues clear out their clutter, raise money for charity and help the planet at the same time. You can find out more by emailing us on marketing@ alfonica.com

Jewish News is offering three lucky readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Emilia at the Vaudeville Theatre! Emilia tells the story of the trailblazing Emilia Bassano, one of the first female English poets to be published, in 1611. A contemporary of Shakespeare’s, thought to be the ‘dark lady’ of his sonnets, she was herself a talented poet, teacher, mother, writer, wife and lover. But what of her own poems? Why was her story erased from history? For 400 years, her story has been forgotten. Now in a play full of music and song, an all-female company bring Emilia’s story to life and, through one woman’s story, celebrate women’s voices across the centuries. Following overwhelming critical acclaim at Shake-
