on our streets, are we left with the sickening feeling that Labour’s leader – who chillingly referred to the Iranianbacked terror group as his ‘friends’ – simply didn’t want it to happen?

Rather than jump for joy, Jeremy Corbyn’s party grotesquely requested fresh “evidence” that Hezbollah deserved a ban and speculated the decision may be more to do with Sajid Javid’s leadership aspirations.

Asked if he’d support a ban, lonely Shadow Home Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds,

packed off to the Commons for the debate, simply shrugged when asked about his party’s stance by the home secretary.

When it comes to Labour and Britain’s Jews, everything must be painfully and uneasily laborious.

That aside, it was a good week, the week our wait came to an end.

Jewish News readers will well know how long and hard we’ve campaigned for this day.

And here it is. As of Friday, Hezbollah is a terror group from top to toe. Expressing support for it could land you up to 10 years in jail.

That means no more legal loopholes for those who fly the group’s yellow flags, so adorned subtly with a rifle.

That sight has been among the most insidious elements of the Al-Quds Day March in London.

The Government, finally, has taken action, which we salute. Good riddance, Hezbollah flags. Your presence on our streets demeaned our democracy.

Finally, a full Hezbollah ban

Home Secretary Sajid Javid this week announced the government’s decision to proscribe Hezbollah’s political wing, a ban that comes into effect tomorrow.

The military wing of Hezbollah is already proscribed, but the law currently draws a distinction between it and the political side.

A draft order, subject to Parliament’s approval, will impose a sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment to members or anyone inviting support for Hezbollah, Ansaroul Islam and Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam Wal-Muslimin (JNIM).

In a joint statement, the Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust, said: “We welcome the home secretary’s move to proscribe Hezbollah in full. The Jewish community, including our organisations and leading community newspapers, have long led the call for this ban.

“The previously held false distinction, between the ‘political’ and ‘military’ wings, was denied by even the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah, who said: ‘The story of military wing and political wing is the work of the British.’

“This has led to a situation where

Hezbollah supporters were free to parade the flags of this antisemitic terrorist organisation on the streets of London. following this announcement, we call on all of the relevant authorities to ensure this will no longer be tolerated.”

Joan Ryan, chair of Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), said: “The government’s decision in its entirety is a huge victory for LFI’s long-running campaign against this antisemitic terror group.”

Chairman of Campaign Against Antisemitism Gideon Falter said: “We are delighted that our efforts, and those of our friends and allies, have finally borne fruit.”

However, the Labour Party questioned the motives behind the move.

A spokesperson said: “The Home Office has previously ruled there was not sufficient evidence that the political wing of Hezbollah fell foul of proscription criteria, a position confirmed by ministers in the House of Commons last year. Ministers have not provided any clear evidence to suggest this has changed.

“Decisions on the proscription of organisations as terror groups are supposed to be made on the advice of civil servants based on evidence that those

organisations fall foul of the proscription criteria.

“The home secretary must show this decision was taken in an impartial way, and driven by clear and new evidence, not by his leadership ambitions.”

However, Labour faced scathing criticism for its comments, with Labour MP Wes Streeting saying: “There is a strong and proud social democratic tradition in the Labour Party of confronting and facing down murderous, hateful ideology.

MAYORAL HOPEFUL WILL BAN AL-QUDS DAY MARCH The Conservative hopeful to become London mayor has pledged to end the pro-Hezbollah annual Al Quds Day march – in the same week the government banned the terror group in its entirety, writes Jack Mendel.

The frontrunner to oust Sadiq Khan has hit out at the “very obviously uncomfortable” anti-Israel march through the capital each year, insisting he would “just stop it” if he is elected to City Hall next year. “It’s unnecessary, it doesn’t need to happen – it sends the wrong messages,” he said.

Anti-Israel demonstrators had previously been allowed to march through London waving Hezbollah flags, with stickers signifying support for the Shi’ite group’s political wing, which until this week, was legal in the UK. Its military wing had already been banned.

Prior to the ban, Bailey said: “I don’t see the distance between the two wings of that party. They seem the same thing. If you ban one

half, it seems bizarre not to ban the other.”

Criticising Khan, who had insisted it was the home secretary’s job to ban Hezbollah, Bailey said: “The mayor is right, he can’t ban it [the march], but he absolutely has the power to stop it.” Asked if he would prioritise it, he said: “Yes. You just ban it.”

Moving onto the issue of antisemitism, Bailey said: “As a black person, I fully understand prejudice and racism in a personal way,” but added London needs to “get round these issues by stopping trading on people’s differences”.

He also spoke of the “privilege” of visiting the Jewish state with Conservative Friends of Israel, heralding the potential for bilateral trade ties.

“It was a real eye-opener for me. I met a wide range of Israeli people and I remember coming back to London and having those Shaun experiences to swap with Bailey the Jewish community.”

UK group wants parties banned New Israel Fund (NIF) has urged Jews in the UK to back calls for Israel’s Central Elections Committee to ban far-right parties with whom Benjamin Netanyahu entered into an electoral pact.

Zazim, a community action group in Israel, launched a petition this week calling for the ban on Jewish Home and Jewish Power, the latter comprising disciples of Rabbi Meir Kahane, who advocated Jewish theocracy and the forcible deportation of non-Jews from

Israel. He was convicted of manufacturing explosives and later assassinated.

NIF said Jews who had been left horrified that these groups could soon take their place in Israel’s parliament could join 13,000 Israelis who signed the petition, but that they would need to do so in the next two days. “I returned from Israel, where Israelis are speaking up in outrage at the news of Kahanists being embraced by the political mainstream,” said NIF UK’s Adam Ognall.

Government boosts communal security Home Secretary Sajid Javid is to increase the government’s financial commitment to Jewish community security by £600,000 to £14million per year.

Ahead of his speech to the annual Community Security Trust (CST) dinner yesterday evening, Javid (pictured) said he was raising the funding from its current £13.4m in part because of the record number of antisemitic incidents reported last year.

Distributed by the CST, the money goes towards equipment and staffing costs to protect Jewish buildings and events, including schools and communal centres, with Labour MP Ruth Smeeth last week suggesting the funding should be agreed on a multi-year basis, rather than on a year-by-year basis as at present.

On the spectre of online antisemitism, Javid also explained that the upcoming Online Harms White Paper will help clean up the “darkest corners of the internet” by setting out plans to compel tech companies to do more to protect UK citizens.

CST chief executive David Delew paid tribute to the government’s commitment to the security of the British Jewish community, which now stands at £51 million since 2015, adding

that he was “extremely grateful” for the funding boost.

“At a time of rising antisemitism, when Jewish people are increasingly worried about growing hatred and division in our society, this vital support will give renewed reassurance to the Jewish community that we do not stand alone,” said Delew.

The dinner marked 25 years since the creation of the CST, and deputy chair Sir Lloyd Dorfman, who last year described Jeremy Corbyn as “Tinkerbell” compared to some of his inner circle, reflected that for most of those 25 years the problem of antisemitism has come mainly from the far-right.

“At CST we are strictly not party-political,” Dorfman told the audience. “But we must applaud the bravery of those Labour politicians who continue to fight antisemitism on the inside, as well as those who have recently broken away in protest.”

CST chair Gerald Ronson saluted Labour MPs past and present for their stand against antisemitism in the Labour Party, namechecking John Mann, Ruth Smeeth, Dame Margaret Hodge, Dame Louise Ellman, Ian Austin, Joan Ryan, and Luciana Berger – the latter three having recently resigned from the party.

WATSON TO MONITOR FUTURE COMPLAINTS Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson has told party colleagues that his team will “log and monitor” all complaints of antisemitism in the party. In an email to MPs and peers, Watson asked for all complaints of antisemitic abuse from within the party raised to general secretary Jennie Formby to also be shared with him, as first reported by The Times. The email, since confirmed to Jewish News, reads: “In order to properly monitor the scale of the problem, I would like to see any issue or complaint you raise with the general secretary.”

561 CRITICISE CORBYN FOR LACK OF ACTION

Broadcaster Jonny Gould and Tal Ofer are among the 561 signatories rejecting claims Labour is a “force for good” in the fight against antisemitism. The letter published in The Guardian “acknowledges” the Labour Party was previously “a force for good in promoting anti-racism”, adding: “Sadly, that is no longer the case.”

It is a response to another letter published by The Guardian last week urging readers to back Labour, claiming Corbyn is a “crucial ally against antisemitism”. Last week’s letter was signed by “over 200 Jewish supporters of the Labour Party”.

LANSMAN: PROBLEM IS NOW ‘MUCH LARGER’

Labour has a “much larger” group of members with hardcore antisemitic views than previously thought and must be more proactive in rooting them out, Momentum founder Jon Lansman has said. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Lansman, who is Jewish, said the problem was in part due to the trebling in size of Labour’s membership since Jeremy Corbyn took the helm, with some 300,000 new members. He said: “I do think we have a major problem and it always seems to me that we underestimate the scale. I think it is a widespread problem. It is obvious we have a much larger number of people with hardcore antisemitic opinions polluting the atmosphere in a lot of constituency parties and online.”

CORBYN’S ‘HEARTFELT’ PLEA FOR JLM TO STAY

Jeremy Corbyn has told the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) it is his “heartfelt wish” for the organisation to remain affiliated to the party and called for a meeting – an offer rebuffed until action is taken on antisemitism. The message came a week before meetings where some JLM members are expected to push for ties to be severed after 99 years. Corbyn wrote: “I know your decision to call an extraordinary meeting to discuss the future of your affiliation will not have been taken lightly. I deeply regret this is under consideration. It is my heartfelt wish that your members choose to retain the historic relationship that first Poale Zion and latterly the JLM have had with the party.”

Williamson suspended over antisemitism row

Chris Williamson has been suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation.

Anger erupted after video emerged of the Derby North politician telling activists Labour had been “too apologetic” over antisemitism, hours after Jewish News revealed he had booked a room in Parliament for a screening of suspended activist Jackie Walker’s film.

A Labour spokesman said: “Chris Williamson is suspended from the party, and therefore the whip, pending an investigation.”

Sources indicated that once his pattern of behaviour was reviewed yesterday, the general secretary decided to suspend him.

In a clip published by The Yorkshire Post, Williamson told a meeting hosted by Momentum the party had “given too much ground”.

He suggested Labour’s response to complaints of antisemitism had contributed to the party being “demonised”.

Williamson also said he had celebrated the resignation of former Labour MP Joan Ryan – who defected to join the Independent Group of MPs last week – by singing Kool & The Gang’s 1980s pop classic Celebration.

In a letter to Labour’s chief whip Nick Brown and general secretary Jennie Formby, Watson accused Williamson of bringing the party into “disrepute” and called for his expulsion.

Watson also tweeted: “Chris Williamson has produced a long-winded and heavily caveated apology. It is not good enough. If it was in my gift I would have removed the whip from him already.”

Labour MP Wes Streeting echoed Watson’s words, tweeting: “I do not believe this is sincere. I believe you have deliberately baited Jewish people in our Party and across the country.”

Dame Louise Ellman described Labour’s initial decision to issue Williamson with a notice of investigation as “meaningless” and a “failure of leadership yet again”.

Following speculation at the weekend that Ellman was on the verge of quitting the party, she said: “I’ve not taken any decision. I’m fighting this within but am becoming increasingly angry.”

Earlier this week, Williamson provoked fresh outrage after he booked a room in Parliament on behalf of Jewish Voice for Labour for a screening of suspended Jackie Walker’s new film.

It is believed that the screening of the film, which was due to be shown in a committee room of the House of Commons next Monday, has now been cancelled.

Last summer, the Jewish Labour Movement called for the whip to be withdrawn from Williamson for a pattern of behaviour that has included repeatedly sharing platforms with suspended and expelled activists and retweeting from accounts with hardcore antisemitism.

He was also one of the few highprofile figures to continue to publicly support Pete Willsman’s efforts to be re-elected on to the NEC after the latter’s Jewish Trump fanatics rant was revealed.

Jewish MP Ruth Smeeth, who first raised the issue of the room booking, told Jewish News: “It’s

outrageous that a member of Parliament is giving a platform to an organisation that seems more intent on characterising the antisemitism crisis within the party as smears rather than being part of solution.

“Giving these people and Jackie Walker a platform at the home of British democracy is a complete and utter disgrace. I’ll be complaining to the leader of the Labour Party and the house authorities.”

Walker – who was suspended from Labour after saying that “many

Jews were chief financiers of the slave trade” and then again over remarks during an antisemitism training event at party conference more than two years ago – is currently awaiting a disciplinary hearing.

The party initially said it was issuing a notice of investigation against Williamson but not suspending him; however, fellow Labour MPs including Watson continued to demand the whip be withdrawn.

CHILDREN’S CHARITIES AGREE TO MERGER Two Jewish charities working with children and young adults with disabilities in Greater Manchester have agreed to merge. JSENSE, which helps school staff working with children with special educational needs, and JADDS, which helps parents whose children have conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and dyslexia, said on Tuesday that they would “combine expertise”.

They said: “The merger will give the new charity a fresh focus to deliver holistic provision for children with educational needs.”

SINGIN’ INTHE RAIN DIRECTOR MOURNED

Filmmaker and choreographer Stanley Donen, best known for co-directing the 1952 musical Singin’ in the Rain, has died.

The Hollywood director died last Thursday from heart failure at the age of 94. He was born in South Carolina to Mordecai Moses Donen, a dress-shop manager, and Helen Cohen, the daughter of a jewelry salesman. His films include Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Indiscreet (1958). Donen is survived by three of his four children.

In a candid interview this week, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who was jailed for fraud, said he “missed the opportunity to do what I think is essential for the future of the state of Israel”, writes Jenni Frazer.

Ehud Olmert (pictured), the former mayor of Jerusalem, served as Israel’s prime minister from 2006 to 2009. He stood down as prime minister to fight a string of corruption and bribery charges against him, but was convicted and spent 16 months in prison, leaving in 2017.

He failed to get President Reuven Rivlin to erase his criminal record, which would have allowed him to return to front-line politics.

As the star guest of the Zionist Federation (ZF), this year marking its 120th anniversary, Olmert was interviewed by Rageh Omaar, ITV’s international affairs editor.

It was a pugnacious performance delivered with humour, in which he declared that politicians from “almost all” the Israeli parties regularly consulted him for his advice.

He dismissed a question about what the departure of Tzipi Livni meant for the future of the two-state solution, with a growl: “What has it to do with her?”

Of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing corruption charges, Olmert was scathing: “Whatever he is suspected of is much bigger, much wider and much more devastating than anything I was ever accused of.”

“I was never indicted for anything I did when I was prime minister. Everything he is sus-

pected of is what he [allegedly] did while sitting in the prime minister’s office. And yet I was not the one who said he should resign because of the suspicions.

“What I criticise him for is what he is doing now to prevail [in the elections] at a cost of things which I think are damaging the national interests of Israel. For instance, do we need to go to Chad? Don’t we have other places to go? Chad? Chad, which is boycotted by almost everyone in the world, and needs the good relations that Israel has in America to build up their position? That’s not the kind of international relations we should be doing.”

He also said: “I think the present government is not doing what I think is very important to secure Israel as a democratic and Jewish state.

In this respect, the opportunity to do what I think could have influenced the course of history is something that I regret.”

Olmert gave an example of when he was prime minister, in the immediate aftermath of Operation Cast Lead in January 2009.

Sex ed to include parental opt-out

Orthodox Jewish educators won a major victory this week after the government’s proposed new guidance on sex education in schools included an opt-out for parents, writes Adam Decker.

The government had proposed that relationships education is taught at primary school, relationships and sex education at secondary school and health education at all state-funded schools. But some Jewish groups say parents should decide whether to teach their children relationship and sex education (RSE) and have welcomed the “flexibility” of a parental waiver included in the newly-published draft statutory guidance.

“Parents have the right to request their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE,” the document states, adding: “Schools are free to determine how to deliver the content.”

Some strictly-Orthodox schools have fallen foul of current guidance on educating children about homosexuality, but the Equality Act 2010 means discrimination on the grounds of a person’s sexual orientation is illegal and Ofsted inspectors have repeatedly downgraded schools for not teaching pupils about it.

This week’s draft guidance, which is due to come into effect next year, states schools “may teach the distinctive faith perspective on rela-

tionships, and balanced debate may take place about issues that are seen as contentious”.

It adds the school “may wish to reflect on faith teachings about topics, as well as how their faith institutions may support people in matters of relationships and sex”. However, it also states that “teaching should reflect the law, including the Equality Act 2010, as it applies to relationships, so young people clearly understand what the law allows and does not allow, and the wider legal implications of decisions they may make”.

Board of Deputies’ vice president Edwin Shuker said groups within the Jewish community hold a range of views about relationships and sex education. “It is a positive step that the proposed legislation will retain a measure of flexibility that will allow Jewish schools to act according to their ethos, although we note the new guidance will continue to pose challenges for strictly-Orthodox secondary schools.”

Shimon Cohen of the Torah Education Committee, a coalition of Orthodox schools that led the lobbying effort, said: “We are encouraged by the government’s commitment that these matters will not have to be addressed at primary level and that at secondary level, a right to withdraw remains, with headteachers empowered to discern how these issues are addressed.”

ELDERLY MAN IS BRUTALLY BEATEN IN BOREHAMWOOD A man was arrested in Borehamwood on Monday after witnesses reported him shouting antisemitic obscenities.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Police said: “Stephen Passfield, 57, of Farriers Way in Borehamwood, has been charged with racially or religiously aggravated harassment in connection with an alleged antisemitic incident in Clarendon Road.”

Passfield has been released on bail and is next due to appear before St Albans Magistrates’ Court on 2 April.

attacked and beaten by an unknown thug in broad daylight at Highbury Corner with police investigating reports that it may have been motivated by antisemitism.

The victim, in his 70s, was set upon near the Tube station at around 2.15pm on Tuesday by a shaven-headed attacker believed to be in his 30s, who fled the scene.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted about the Islington attack on Tuesday evening, saying the man had been “assaulted because he was Jewish,” adding: “This racist attack has shaken our community. I have spoken with local councillors and we will be supporting the police.”

A police spokesperson said: “The incident is believed to have taken place in Highbury Fields, N5. Our enquiries are ongoing.”

Organ donor change welcomed

The new organ bill will ‘help save lives’

Jewish groups this week welcomed a “landmark” Bill set to be signed into law that changes the way organs are donated in the UK – after ministers said families of the deceased would be consulted, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Community representatives welcomed the reassurance following a House of Lords debate on Tuesday, at which the Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Bill passed its third reading.

It had its first reading in 2017, after the government received a record 11,000 public responses to the consultation, and paves the way for the NHS to set up a system in England modelled on the one being used in Wales, which is based on opting

out of organ donation rather than requiring people to opt in.

Researchers have found that although 90 percent of the British public are happy for their organs to be used to save a life, only 33 percent get round to signing the organ donation register.

Health bosses say the change in onus will save hundreds of lives every year, with more than 6,000 people awaiting transplants.

Jewish groups’ initial concerns have now been mainly allayed by the government, which said the families of the deceased will be consulted prior to organs being taken, a change welcomed by Board of Deputies vice president Amanda Bowman.

Uni suspends ‘denier’ A University of Essex computer and electronics lecturer who reportedly shared a Holocaust denial post on Facebook has been suspended while an investigation into his social media activity is carried out.

Dr Maaruf Ali last week opposed the creation of a Jewish Society on campus and is being investigated after a torrent of antisemitic posts was discovered, including one denying the Holocaust and another appearing to call for jihad.

Among the posts discovered, one read: “In all of German-occupied Europe, there resided 2.4 million Jews before the war, according to the World Jewish Encyclopedia.

“After the war, 3.8 million Jewish ‘Holocaust survivors’ were receiving pensions from the German government. Tragically, the remaining six million were lost.”

Vice chancellor Professor Anthony Forster said: “To see the University of Essex associated with antisemitism has been a deeply shocking event and one that has filled me with great sadness.

“Antisemitism is antithetical to the values of the University of Essex and has no place at our university.

We have a zero tolerance policy to harassment and hate crime, which is at the very core of our values and beliefs.”

In a statement, the Union of Jewish Students said it welcomed the vice chancellor’s condemnation of antisemitism and commended the action taken, including suspension of the staff member and a full investigation.

It added that assurances of the establishment of a Jewish society at the university, which the Students Union had threatened to oppose, were also “most welcome”.

The St John Ambulance Service, where Ali was a volunteer, has also suspended him and announced they would be “investigating” him internally.

A spokesman said: ‘The views expressed in these posts on a personal social media account are that of the individual and not of St John Ambulance.

“As an inclusive organisation, we expect all volunteers to treat each other and others with humanity and respect and these values are reflected in our volunteer charter.”

“The Bill is a landmark in the transplant system in England, moving the system from an opt in model to an opt out model,” she said.

“The ministerial reassurances, most notably that there will always be a discussion with the family who can indicate their loved one’s wishes, go some way to protect our religious freedom. It is also possible to explicitly request for faith issues to be taken into account on the register.”

It follows a letter to the Board from Health Minister Jackie-DoylePrice, who said: “Organs and tissue will not be taken without full consultation with persons in a qualifying relationship.”

Jewish peer and bioethicist Baroness Deech said the letter “provided

faith communities with the comfort that the change in the organ donation system will respect beliefs while helping to save lives”.

Both political parties supported the Bill, as did charities such as Kidney Care UK and British Heart Foundation, but MPs who championed the change in England said past efforts to do so were hindered by former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks.

Former paymaster general, Geoffrey Robinson MP, said last year: “Gordon Brown wanted to introduce an opt-out system, but came up against a fairly immovable block in the then Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Sacks, who said that at no cost could he commit the Jewish community to supporting it.”

POST-BREXIT BOOST FOR UK-ISRAEL TRADE Whether or not Brexit happens on 29 March, the “future is bright” for UK-Israel trade, according to the head of the Jewish state’s economic and trade mission to the UK, Embassy of Israel, writes Joe Millis.

Minister Yariv Becher, who was speaking at a round table event arranged by Israel Bonds this week, is busy ensuring that British and Israeli businesses are in the right place at the right time to deal with each other.

Last week – the same time International Trade Secretary Liam Fox spent three hours in Israel signing a continuation agreement for bilateral trade for the post-Brexit era – Becher brought eight Israeli financial tech (fintech) firms to London to meet UK bankers.

The UK-Israel continuation agreement, “ a copy-and-paste of the current Israel-EU agreement, ensures that whatever happens come 29 March, nothing changes”, said Becher.

“If Britain exits the EU, we have an agreement in place. If it doesn’t, we continue with the current deal. And if there’s a transition period, the deal comes into effect once that period is over,” he added. “So the future’s bright whatever happens.”

Bilateral trade – which last year hit a record-breaking $10bn – is not only about high-tech or fintech. “It covers everything from tahini to cyber,” said

Becher. “In fact, most of the trade is not high-tech or services, but it’s goods and commodities. About three-quarters of our exports to the UK are chemicals and pharma. About half of the UK’s exports to Israel are minerals.”

The UK’s Foreign Direct Investment into Israel is also on the rise, and currectly stands at $260bn, and it’s not just venture capital, said Becher.

“Defence, security and aerospace giant BAE invests in Israel as does Johnson Matthey, the chemicals and sustainable technology company.”

Israel’s bilateral trade with the UK has been on an upward trend, said Becher. “In 2016, it was $7.5bn, in 2017 $9.5bn and last year $10bn. This year it’s already heading towards $11bn and I hope the trend will continue.”

SANCTION FOR FOOTIE FANS Shock over rabbi attack Punishments handed to antisemitic football fans could be ramped up under a widespread government review of discrimination in the sport.

Sports Minister Mims Davies chaired a parliamentary summit of football executives, former players and charities to draw up plans.

Football chiefs will “look at the sanctioning regime and consider if improvements are needed

to further act as a deterrent” as part of the review.

The proposals have been backed by the Football Association, the Premier League and the English Football League, which all had representatives at the summit on Monday.

A joint statement from the three bodies said “recent events have demonstrated that there is clearly much more to do” to oust racism.

British Jews reacted with “deep shock” this week after one of Argentina’s chief rabbis was badly beaten before being tied up with his wife during a violent robbery at his home in Buenos Aires.

Unconfirmed media stated that Chief Rabbi Gabriel Davidovich reported that his attackers knew who he was as they beat him, saying “we know you’re the AMIA rabbi”.

This led Benjamin Netanyahu to call the break-in a hate crime, but World Jewish Congress’ Robert Singer said: “It is not clear if this was an antisemitic or a barbaric criminal act.”

Davidovich, who was hospitalised with broken ribs and a punctured lung, is the chief rabbi at the Jewish cultural centre in the capital that was bombed in 1994, killing 85 people.

Jewish Book Week tribute to the ‘Chekhov of Israel’ A glimpse of the late Amos Oz’s impish humour – as voiced by his daughter, historian Fania Oz-Salzberger – enchanted a packed audience this week at the opening event of Jewish Book Week 2019, writes Jenni Frazer.

In a special panel assembled to pay tribute to the renowned Israeli author, who died last December, the newlyknighted Sir Simon Schama enthusiastically read excerpts from some of Oz’s work.

Jonathan Freedland, the Guardian writer and author, said he had interviewed Oz “more times than I can count.

At least since I was 18, and almost every other year after that”. Oz had been, in a world with very few heroes, definitely one of his, and Freedland drew attention to Oz’s great intellect, artistic sensibility, “and, above all, his morality”.

on his desk. “One I use when I want to write a story, and the other I use when I want to tell my government to go to hell”.

The author’s long-time translator, Nicholas de Lange, worked with Oz for more than 50 years on 17 of his books. He told the audience, in an emotional presentation, how unhappy he was to be discussing his late friend: “There is an Amos Oz-shaped

hole in my life.”

He paid tribute to the writer’s British publisher, Chatto and Windus, its editor, Alison Samuel, and to Oz’s literary agent, Debbie Owen, who was present in the audience with her husband, former Foreign Secretary Lord Owen.

But it was Oz-Sulzberger – whose brother, Daniel Oz, a well-regarded poet, was also present – who spoke about

her father as the “Chekhov” of Israel, who delighted and charmed the Jewish Book Week audience, many of whom had regularly attended presentations by Amos Oz. She spoke about her father’s early days on Kibbutz Hulda, and recalled with some amusement de Lange’s gift, to her aged eight, of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, a present which made her rush to her father’s old English dictionary.

She remembered her days as a graduate student in Oxford with Sir Isaiah Berlin as her mentor, often visited by her father. And she reminded listeners of Oz’s mantra that the “eleventh commandment” should be “Thou shall not cause pain”.

Though Oz was no longer here, Oz-Sulzberger declared, those who were left were “actively committed to the Oz road of humanitarian Zionism”.

The organisations are partnering on the ‘Jewish Voices’ event for the finale of Jewish Book Week next month, and have asked people to send in “their favourite Jewish words – be they in a letter, joke, song lyric or passage from literature.

a well-penned letter to The Times, to correspondence with someone famous, to a one-liner from your mum that neatly encapsulates Jewish humour, guilt or chutzpah”.

he trust that bought a ruined castle in north Wales last year is calling on the Jewish community to help to design an interactive exhibition showcasing how it became a safe haven for hundreds of Jewish children, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Between 1939 and 1941, Gwrych Castle, a Grade I listed country house near Abergele, was given over by its then-owner, the Earl of Dundonald, to between 250 and 300 children from Central Europe who had fled Nazi tyranny on the Kindertransport.

It became a model kibbutz and the UK base for Bnei Akiva, led by Arieh Handler, who taught the youngsters agriculture, forestry and other skills needed to work the land in Israel, in the years before the State of Israel was established.

Following the war, the castle – known as “the Showpiece of Wales” – was thrown open to the public, but fell into disuse in the 1980s and was stripped of its assets in the 1990s.

Historian Dr Matt Baker set up the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust and last June bought the castle and its 250 acres following a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

Baker told Jewish News the trust viewed it as a “priority” to include an “engaging and interactive” exhibition to the period when the castle provided sanctuary to Jewish teenagers forced to leave their homeland.

“It’s a question of when, not if,” Baker said.

“The castle plays an important role not just in the story of the Kindertransport but of the foundation of Israel. It was a safe haven for these children for two years. We want to celebrate their lives but do so in a way that resonates for today’s younger generations who will be visiting.”

John Edelnand, aged 94, was brought to the UK on the Kindertransport from Germany and stayed at the castle for two years.

Today he lives in Luton and told Jewish News he supports plans to bring it back to life.

“I came over when I was 14, we stayed at a farm in Kent for a week before Mizrachi organised for us to go to Gwrych,” Edelnand said.

“There were about 100 of us.

We spent two years there. I still send [the trust] cheques when I can.” Baker said Dundonald had given over “90 percent” of the castle to Jewish children after being inspired by his mother.

“She was very active during the First World War, getting ambulances, setting up hospitals, even setting up a prisoner-of-war camp to show the German officers how prisoners should be treated. He’d seen all that, so in 1939 he saw the need to help those fleeing Nazi Germany, and decided that this was how the family could help.”

Recent archaeological digs have unearthed buried cutlery Baker’s team believes may stem from the time of the Kinder. “The archaeologist suggested this may stem from a practice in Orthodox Judaism, we’re not sure, but they date from that time.”

Baker said the team had visited other historic venues such as Stowe “to see how they bring the place’s history alive” but said they would value Jewish input on Gwrych.

“We would love to work with Jewish groups to build connections. We’re very open to help support and ideas. If it comes from the Jewish community, that steer, then that would be incredibly helpful,” he said.

“The castle already gets a lot of visitors, many more once the work is completed, so this is now the design stage. Telling the history of the castle, the Kindertransport and the role the castle played, is an absolute priority.

“What we do will depend on how much money we raise. It’s not limited by imagination.”

Unesco expert rejects memorial Unesco’s official adviser on World Heritage Sites has opposed the building of a Holocaust memorial near Parliament, in a letter to Westminster Council.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites, said the memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens would have a “massive visual impact” on the park.

The letter also raised concerns two lines of trees could be killed, along with 27 percent of grass areas. This is owing to the memorial’s proposed underground chamber, which could cut many roots and deprive others of air and moisture.

The Environment Agency also objected to the memorial, saying its underground structure could “adversely affect the construction and stability of the flood defence”, rendering surrounding areas

susceptible to floods.

Historic England warned destruction of archaeological treasures beneath the park could create “a clear risk of substantial harm to remains of national importance”.

The Holocaust memorial and learning centre, which would honour victims and survivors, has received crossparty support from parliamentarians.

The Holocaust Educational Trust has paid tribute to Holocaust survivor Edgar Guest who tirelessly educated schoolchildren about the horrors of the Shoah.

HET chief executive Karen Pollock this week described him as “a friend” and recalled how, at the age of 14, he was moved to the Budapest Ghetto where he had to clear the streets of corpses in order to get an extra cup of soup every day.

D-Day hero who saw Nuremberg trials dies The family of a decorated Jewish soldier who fought at D-Day and witnessed Nazi trials say they will “continue his legacy” by teaching schoolchildren the horrors of the war, after he passed away on Sunday aged 94.

Speaking to Jewish News after Tuesday’s Waltham Abbey funeral service for Leslie Sutton, his grandson Daniel Halawi paid tribute to “an amazing man” who was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest accolade, in 2016.

Born in Brighton, Leslie fought in a ground crew regiment of the RAF, training on the Isle of Man before landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. One of his brothers did not come home, but Leslie survived and returned to the south-east, living in Essex and teaching schoolchildren about the realities of war.

His wartime experience took him into the world of private security, and it was in this capacity, while protecting French President Charles De Gaulle, that he attended the Nuremburg Trials, later commenting on how he had seen “his-

The owner of British Airways is inviting “disruptive” Israeli start-ups to pitch to its senior team in three weeks’ time, as the company sets its sights on Israeli partners.

The pitch day is part of the company’s ongoing accelerator programme, Hangar 51, which brings start-ups into the group that is headquartered in London.

On the day, Israeli entrepreneurs will each have a 30-minute slot to present their idea and explain how their technology could help the airline, which carries 105 million passengers every year. Those who impress could win investment from IAG’s multimillion pound digital fund to scale their business.

Jewish News meets... Michael Wegier

Wegier reflects on a weighty legacy Michael Wegier, the outgoing chief executive of UJIA, says he is proud and frustrated in almost equal measure, writes Jenni Frazer.

His pride, he says, is for the tenacity with which young British Jews stayed on their Israel programmes in the tumultuous violent summer of the 2014 Gaza War. “Almost no-one came home, or didn’t go. It is one of the proudest things we have ever done”.

And the frustration? “That we couldn’t crack the gap-year problem”.

But Wegier, a 14-year veteran of UJIA roles culminating in his sixand-a-half-year stint as chief executive, even has plans to tackle that – the problem being a decline in numbers of those who spend a whole year in Israel between school and university.

Wegier is better placed than many to look at the complex relationship between Britain and the diaspora, not just because of his profession, but because he made aliyah in 1990 and has been back and forth between Britain and Israel since 1983.

Besides a huge sea-change in the

number of Israel-related charities between now and 30 years ago, Wegier says there is a major change in the way money is raised – and used for.

“Then, the bulk of fund-raising was done as peer to peer, by volunteers.

Now it is driven by professionals, and UJIA has the largest professional team in the community,” he says. “We are not raising less money. JIA probably raised as a percentage of all fundraising more than UJIA raises today but the overall sector has grown”.

Additionally, Wegier says, the messaging has shifted radically in the way people are asked to support Israel.

“Israel is a first-world country, but you can go to the periphery and find people who are really struggling. So UJIA’s messaging there has shifted – it is about helping the most vulnerable.

But we partner with Israeli philanthropists and we fund programmes together, in Israel and in the UK, projects where the Israeli taxpayer and Israeli philanthropists are partners.”

Among the programmes Israelis are helping to fund and about which

Wegier is most enthused is Onward Israel, a two-month internship which people can attend after school or during or after university. Participants can work in hi-tech or social action or NGOs. Feedback for the programme is immensely positive, says Wegier.

Part of the change in the way UJIA works, he goes on, is an acknowledgment of the change in relationship between Israel and the diaspora.

He characterises it as “hugging and wrestling, and how to ensure that our children and grandchildren have the same deep and powerful relationship with Israel as we do today”.

Things have changed for Wegier himself, he admits. “I came back in 2002 to find that the community was far more exciting than the one I had left. It was more dynamic, there was much more going on, particularly if you lived in the big communities of London and Manchester.”

In response, UJIA stepped up its game. One of Wegier’s challenges has been to confront “those who might say UK Jewry are better off donating just

to Jews”, and has urged the charity to help bridge the poverty gap between Jews and Arabs with better investment in Arab areas.

Task Force, an external grouping, has now been absorbed into UJIA, and has just appointed its first Arab Israeli, Sana Knaneh, from the Galilee, an educator doing her Master’s at LSE, who will work with youth movements “to teach British Jewry about the Arab citizens of Israel”.

Overall, Wegier is still frustrated about UJIA’s inability to improve the numbers of gap-year participants.

His ambition, despite the fact UJIA currently operates on a £12million budget, is “to make gap year like Birth-

right” with every young Jew going on a gap-year programme but with costs kept down to £1,000 per participant.

This would mean UJIA would have to raise an additional £2.5million a year. “We could do it, once, but ideally we would need to do that every year.”

It’s a huge ask for an already overstretched community, but Wegier says all the surveys show a gap year in Israel has the greatest effect on future communal leaders and professionals alike.

Together with SI3, UJIA’s newest social-impact project, where “green philanthropy” loans are given to small businesses in Israel, Wegier’s mission of “how to connect” will, he hopes, be his legacy to the community.

Rivals unite for the fight As Britain’s two biggest political parties continued to fracture and split, Israel’s fiercest electoral forces merged, with Benjamin Netanyahu agreeing terms with the far-right while centrists Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid tied the knot.

In a move seen as hugely significant, Gantz, a former IDF chief of staff, and Lapid, a former TV presenter, combined their two parties – Lapid’s Yesh Atid and Gantz’s new Israel Resilience.

They are joined by two other former IDF chiefs of staff – Moshe Ya’alon and Gabi Ashkenazi – and Histradut (labour federation) chair Avi Nissenkorn, in what many now see as a formidable grouping set to shape Israeli politics for the next decade.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu looked increasingly desperate as he cut a deal with Jewish Home and Jewish Power, the latter taking its inspiration from Rabbi Meir Kahane.

In what appeared to be a last throw of the tactical dice, Netanyahu promised ministries to the two groups and a seat on the Likud list.

This could mean therefore that if he were to retain power, one of his ministers is likely to be fanatical settler and “proud homophobe” Bazazel Smotrich, who demands Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank.

Once arrested for organising violent protests, Smotrich opposes any construction permits for Palestinians, wants to legalise illegal settler outposts, supports the segregation of Jews and Arabs in hospital, says Palestinian stone-throwers should be shot and thinks LGBT+ Jews control the media.

Gantz blasted the embattled prime minister as having “lost his Zionism and his dignity” as he courted the limelight with Lapid. The two men are now Israel’s centre ground and an early poll by

Channel 12 suggested they may get slightly more Knesset seats than Netanyahu’s Likud, with 32 compared to 30.

In the event that Gantz, Lapid, Ya’alon and Ashkenazi are asked to form a government, they have agreed that the position of prime minister will rotate, with Gantz serving the first two and a half years and Lapid taking office for the next period.

In a joint statement, the pair said they had been “motivated by national responsibility”, adding the confident statement that their joint list “will serve as Israel’s new governing party”.

They added: “The new governing party will present a new team of security and social leaders that will ensure the country’s security, and will reunite the parts of the people and heal the divided Israeli society.”

All polls suggest that the country’s leftwing has been decimated in the past two years by fractious Labor leader Avi Gabbay.

Part of the reason has been his conduct, which included lying to his party to have secret meetings in the Gulf and which has led to three of his current Knesset members resigning, and others berating him publicly at the party conference.

Long a force in Israeli politics, Labour is now expected to comprise only about six percent of the Knesset from April.

By contrast, Gantz’s star shines ever brighter, prompting a worried Likud to label the former army chief “left-wing”.

In a sign that Netanyahu’s party had returned to its former ballot-box tactic of stoking voters’ fears using racist threats, Likud added that Gantz’s party would be beholden to Arab parties, who would “block” laws they didn’t like. Commentators heard echoes from Israel’s last election, when Netanyahu tweeted on polling day that Jews should rush out because “Arabs are voting in droves!”

Bad company

When the recent former head of Israel’s armed forces accuses Israel’s serving prime minister of having “lost his Zionism and his dignity” you take notice.

True, General Benny Gantz is currently challenging Benjamin Netanyahu in an election campaign, but still, there are some things you just don’t say, unless the person you’re saying them about has completely lost the plot and/ or done something so outrageously beyond the pale that all bets are now off.

In other words, for the highly-respected former IDF Chief of Staff to say Netanyahu has “lost his Zionism”, it had to be bad. And it was.

Netanyahu, facing indictment, had just met the representative of a far-right fringe group that takes its inspiration from Rabbi Meir Kahane, who wanted Israel to be a Jewish theocracy and forcibly deport non-Jewish citizens. Netanyahu offered the Kahanists a Knesset seat and a ministry, if they prop him up.

The Jewish Defence League, which Kahane founded in the US, is classed as a terrorist organisation by the FBI and Israeli Kahanists have adopted a plethora of policies that would make the rabbi proud, such as their insistence that Palestinian child stone-throwers be executed.

Netanyahu doesn’t care. Not when there are votes to be won and allies to be courted as his day in court beckons. That he held such a meeting when he should have been in Moscow discussing Israel’s border with Syria just deepens the resonance of Gantz’s claim.

When the historians look back on the political career of Netanyahu, whenever it ends, they may see this deal with the devil as the day he bought himself time by selling the moral defence of Israel’s supporters around the world.

Stephen Vishnick’s assertion in last week’s Jewish News that “one must question how hard Labour executives are actually attempting to treat antisemitsm” makes for interesting reading.

He finishes his missive with “hopefully, but unlikely prior to the next election, many Labour MPs will split from the party”. He must have had divine inspiration – a group of Labour MPs resigned and became independent days later.

This should be a mortal blow for Mr Corbyn, but I envisage the far-left members of the party licking their lips at the prospect of replacing the leavers before the next election with fellow travellers.

Only time will tell if more moderate MPs jump ship, but it is obvious Mr Corbyn, through lack of leadership and mired in his antiquated dogma, has turned a once great ethical, humanitarian party into a vitriolic gang of nasty antisemites.

Had he thought about it, he would end up boycotting himself and other adherents of boycotting the boycotters.

I’d boycott Baum, because he’s advocating a boycott. But then

MPs from all parties made fine speeches; however, I noticed my MP, the member for Ilford North, was not in attendance.

Ilford North has a large Jewish community. MP Wes Streeting says he is a friend of the Jewish people – if that is the case, why did he not attend? He said at a meeting in Ilford North last year that Jermy Corbyn was not an antisemite. Does he still hold this opinion?

The Jewish residents of Ilford North are very upset that he did not attend the debate and will show our feelings at the ballot box.

I’ve followed with interest articles regarding Jew-hate aka antisemitism in Jewish News.

Sir Bob Russell has had three letters printed in the Mail on Sunday regarding the plight of the Arabs living in Judea and Shomron, commonly known as the West Bank. His attacks on Israel and even equating the alleged conditions of the Palestinians with the Holocaust has been noted and commented upon.

Of course, Sir Bob’s attitude of late is nothing new.

I responded to his first two letters, which were never printed and, lo and behold, last Sunday (24 February) another, his third letter, Plight of Palestine, was printed.

I am left wondering if any of our so-called leaders have bothered to protest by writing letters denouncing his hate and, if not, why not? Did any of the usual Mail on Sunday readers bother to write at all?

A spot of troll bashing to kill the conspiracies JENNI FRAZER

F

ebruary, o’best beloveds, has been conspiracy month, in almost every way possible. People are behaving badly almost everywhere you look, most recently in the response to the MPs who finally snapped and left their political homes over the twin gorgons of antisemitism and Brexit.

Let’s begin on 10 February, when a man whom I will not name, posed this startling question to Labour’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, on social media. He wrote: “My deceased partner was expelled from her synagogue for criticising the Israeli govt.

Who was being AS [antisemitic]: her for criticising the govt or the synagogue for banning a Jewish woman? You’re the expert, Tom”.

Astonishingly – or perhaps not so astonishingly in the current climate – almost 2,000 people “liked” this contribution to the national debate. In the nearly 100 replies to this post, just a handful wanted to know the essentials: which synagogue and when did this

happen? I have never heard of anyone being expelled from a synagogue for their views – even the late Sir Gerald Kaufman remained a member of St John’s Wood and he was hardly any fan of Israel.

But the tweeter, asked directly, never replied. Which either means that this was a blatant lie, left to sink into the conspiratorial narrative about the way Jews really behave, or some random synagogue is nursing a very big and dirty secret. I know which I would pick.

On 20 February, looking at responses to the formation of the Independent Group (TIG), I found this little gem from someone called Simon. He wrote: “The main criticism I’ve heard… are that they are registered as some sort [of ] business so they don’t have to declare anything. And one of them has received huge sums of money from pro Israeli lobby groups [sic]. Not a good start”.

I asked him what he meant, and which MP, and received this reply: “It’s just what I was told today. £1m was the amount quoted at me”.

Oh, well, if it’s “just what he was told”,

that’s perfectly okay. In fact, as it transpired, our Simon was citing an apparently reputable source – Ruth George, the MP for High Peak in Derbyshire.

Four hours after commenting on a Facebook posting by a Labour councillor that appeared to support the claim that Israel was funding TIG, she issued this statement: “On my earlier response to a Facebook comment, I unreservedly and wholeheartedly apologise for my comment.

I had no intention of invoking a conspiracy theory and I am deeply sorry that my ill-

thought out and poorly worded comment did this. I withdraw it completely”.

Even supposing we take Ms George’s apology at face value, it is extraordinary that she even gave five seconds’ credit to this suggestion that Israel was funding the new group – although it is a conspiracy theory all too eagerly leapt on by far too many people.

However, I was cheered considerably at the news that two adornments to our community – that’s TV presenter Rachel Riley and actress Tracy Ann Oberman – steered by the expertise of leading libel lawyer, Mark Lewis – have decided to hit back, in spades.

The two women are taking legal action against a slew of would-be anonymous Twitterers for what they say are defamatory posts, and a barrage of vicious antisemitism.

Up to 70 online trolls are in the frame for potential lawsuits.

I hope the trolls are well and truly unnerved, and will think carefully in the future before casually subscribing to conspiracy theories about Israel and Jews.

To coin a phrase, #enough is enough.

I

n December, the Union of Jewish Students passed a motion, proposed by me, to commit to engaging with Israeli civil society organisations as a means of preserving and protecting Israeli democracy. These organisations are an essential part of a healthy democracy, yet are operating in an increasingly hostile environment, threatened by anti-democratic trends and subject to attempts at delegitimisation.

The motion was met with backlash, with some saying that aligning with these groups would be misrepresenting Jewish students, and there were various attempts by those on the right to stop it from even being debated.

While this small group of people failed to stop this important motion, this is a typical reaction to any critical voice about Israel in Jewish communal spaces.

Last year was a tumultuous one for the British Jewish community in many ways. One of the key themes was an introspective look

at our relationship with Israel, especially the vast differences in opinions between different generations. It is true that Israel plays a big role in the lives of young Jews passionate about the country.

Yet, being engaged and passionate does not mean blindly backing every decision of the Israeli Government. Love for Israel also means analysing the actions of the government and not necessarily agreeing with them.

Supporters of Israel take pride in the fact that the country is the only democracy in the Middle East, and rightly so. Democratic countries that follow enlightened principles of justice, liberty and protection of human rights are a source of pride.

But let us not forget that part and parcel of any democracy is the protection of dissenting voices. If we are to truly celebrate Israel’s democratic character, we must respect not only its elected government, but voices that are critical of it, too.

Breaking the Silence is such a voice. This non-governmental organisation has been giving former IDF soldiers a means to recant their experience in the Occupied Territories since 2004 but, in recent years, it has been on

the end of countless governmental attacks, many of which are based on completely unsubstantiated claims.

While on the Yachad student trip, I was lucky enough to participate in a tour run by Breaking the Silence in 2017, and it is not an over-exaggeration to say that it was one of the most powerful tours I have been on.

I was shocked to see how the division of the city of Hebron had utterly destroyed the livelihoods of people who had lived there for generations. I learnt how the categorisation of streets in Hebron, some of them into roads where Palestinians are not even allowed to walk, now meant that people couldn’t even walk out of their own front door. The reality of the occupation was utterly human rather than political for the first time in my life.

Merphie, an ex-IDF soldier who took me around Hebron in 2017 is coming to the UK next week to speak about her work and experiences at university campuses and in Jewish communities across the country. I urge you, whatever your pre-existing opinions on Breaking the Silence, to come and listen and debate. In fractured times like this, it is incumbent on all of us to do just that.

For those of us who are passionate and engaged with Israel, it is vital that we hear and learn from the parts of Israeli society that we do not agree with, or that anger us.

If we celebrate the fact that Israel is a democracy, we must allow the conversation about it in our community to be open to those who vehemently oppose the actions of the Israeli Government.

I quit party to continue my fight against racism IAN AUSTIN MP

I

grew up listening to my dad – a refugee from the Holocaust – teaching me about the evils of hatred and prejudice. One of the main reasons I joined the Labour Party as a teenager in Dudley more than 35 years ago was to fight racism, and I could never have believed that I’d be leaving because of racism too.

I learnt important values growing up in Dudley. The importance of our democracy, of fairness and tolerance. Knowing what’s right and what’s wrong. Basic decent British values.

I have fought intolerance and prejudice all my life.

My first campaign when I became an MP was to work with local councillors and community groups to drive the BNP out of Dudley.

Last year, I organised a Rally Against Racism in the Birmingham hotel where Enoch Powell made his “Rivers of Blood” speech 50 years before.

I’ve stood with Muslim constituents targeted by the BNP or the EDL, and I will always fight for a more tolerant and united society.

The Labour Party has been my life, so this has been the hardest decision I have ever had to take, but I have to be honest and the truth is that I have become ashamed of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn.

I am appalled at the offence and distress Mr Corbyn and the Labour Party have caused to Jewish people.

It is terrible that a culture of extremism, antisemitism and intolerance is driving out good MPs and decent people who have committed their life to mainstream politics.

It is wrong that Luciana Berger has been bullied out of the Labour Party by antisemites.

It is wrong that the party threatened Dame Margaret Hodge when she spoke out on antisemitism, like they threatened me when I raised the issue with the party chairman.

They had to back down because we had done nothing wrong, but the hard truth is that the party is tougher on the people

complaining about antisemitism than it is on the antisemites.

I have lost count of the number of Jewish friends – longstanding supporters of the Labour Party – who have torn up their party cards.

I have even seen Holocaust survivors take part in protests against the Labour Party.

I will never forget the burning sense of shame when a man who had been imprisoned in Auschwitz asked me how I could stay in the Labour Party with all the antisemitism.

When it comes to racism, I know whose side I am on.

Mr Corbyn and the people around him have turned a mainstream party into something very different.

He has spent his entire political career working with and supporting all sorts of extremists and, in some cases, terrorists and antisemites.

I always thought he was unfit to lead the Labour Party and I certainly think he is unfit to lead our country.

Mr Corbyn and John McDonnell cannot be trusted with our national security and would undermine our democratic institutions.

I could never ask people to make Mr Corbyn Prime Minister. That is why I have decided to leave the Labour Party.

Other decent MPs, councillors and members – good friends of mine – have chosen to remain. I know they share my concerns; it is not for me to call on them to leave and I wish them well in their fight to improve things inside the party.

How has once great party come to this?

ast week, eight MPs resigned from the Labour Party, with many citing the totalitarian ideology of the party leadership, and the antisemitism within its ranks. How did a great party – imbued in social justice and opposition to bigotry – find itself having to fight off accusations of racism, totalitarianism and bullying?

Nearly a year ago, the British Jewish community protested outside Parliament over Jeremy Corbyn’s inability to confront antisemitism in his party. The unprecedented action of a reticent community was spurred by the extraordinary position in which we found ourselves with respect to Her Majesty’s Opposition, where antiJewish hatred has been legitimised.

Corbyn has not just spent his political career feting and apologising for antisemites. He is personally responsible for propagating antiJewish canards, be it suspecting ‘Israel’s hand’ in terrorist attacks in Egypt, or his stubborn support for a mural replete with anti-Jewish imagery. He has allowed a culture of toxicity to engulf the Labour Party, where its elected officials and ordinary members spew vile anti-

Jewish racism daily with little fear of retribution.

He now presides over an institutionally antisemitic party and the blame lies squarely with him.

Yet this is not just a UK problem. We need only look across the Atlantic to see how progressive politics have morphed into anti-Jewish racism. Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar recently claimed that American politicians support Israel because they are paid to do so. Her “It’s all about the Benjamins, baby” tweet will go down as the antisemitic dog whistle of the year.

The reality is that US politicians are proIsrael because American voters are pro-Israel and because American and Israeli values are one and the same. As in the UK, progressives’ shift towards greater criticism of Israel gives rise to an unclear dividing line between criticism of Israeli Government policies and antisemitism, such as regarding Israel itself as a racist endeavour.

Those who wish to show solidarity with Palestinians often fail to distinguish themselves from those who don’t accept Israel has a right to exist at all and those who use antisemitic tropes to express their opposition to Israel and perceived Jewish influence in the US. Few people deny that criticism of Israel is illegitimate, but tropes about rich Jews buying Congress goes against the anti-racist credentials of progressive parties, be it the Democratic Party

or the Labour Party. If Omar needed any confirmation that she had strayed into murky waters, she got it when none other than former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, also a fan of Corbyn, came to her defence. The mainstreaming of an anti-Jewish canard damages our society’s fabric.

Omar has since apologised, but she’s allowed a toxic atmosphere to follow, where such sentiments are accepted. We can’t put the genie back in the bottle – for many, this is as a good thing.

France is another example, where the gilets jaunes, the yellow-vested protestors, are also embroiled in allegations of antisemitism.

What began as a protest against fuel tax rises has quickly broadened to include an array of grievances and has become more and more radical. Last week, prominent Jewish French philosopher Alain Finkielkraut was called a “dirty Zionist” who should “go back to Tel Aviv”.

The question is why protest so often goes

hand in hand with conspiracy theory, illiberalism and hatred of the Jew. We live in an increasingly polarised and politically fraught world and this usually spells disaster for the Jew, a convenient scapegoat for the ills of the world.

Jews are learning hard and fast that antiJewish hatred comes in many guises. Many will look at Omar and think, because of the bigotry she has faced as a black Muslim woman, that she is an ally, in the same way many assume Corbyn must be because of his left-wing politics.

It is to our detriment we deny agency to individuals based on their ethnicity or their ‘values’. We must be show zero tolerance because a climate of antisemitism doesn’t emerge overnight. If we can’t hold our elected representatives’ feet to the fire to ensure that an incident doesn’t become a pattern, we stand no chance of winning this fight.

We have history to tell us what happens next.

Year 5 pupils at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School enjoyed a weekend Shabbaton at Skeet Hill House in Kent. Madrichim from the Young United Synagogue’s Tribe helped organise Mitzvah Board Game and Parasha Plays sessions, and the pupils also enjoyed treasure hunts, quizzes, swimming, zip lining and obstacle courses. “This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to experience Shabbat and to enjoy a weekend away together,” said Deborah Harris, the school’s Jewish studies lead. “We are extremely grateful to Tribe for all their help and support, both before and during the weekend, to ensure it was a success.”

Wessex Liberal Jewish Community celebrated the 90th birthdays of two of its founder members, Nat Roseman and his wife, Joan, who married in 1955 and were instrumental in setting up the community with the support of Liberal Judaism. The couple marked their joint celebration with a 180th party for their far-flung family. “Nat is the main lay leader of the community, taking services with great warmth and knowledge whenever there is no rabbi present,” the community’s Michael Hart said. “Joan showed that she is equally skillful when she gave the D’var Torah before the scroll reading at the special service for her birthday.”

Meditation on grief and fate Stephen Applebaum speaks to Samuel Maoz, the director of a film that explores the trauma in Israeli society – as well as his own

A

s a veteran of the 1982 war in Lebanon, Samuel Maoz probably never expected to be called a traitor.

But when Israel’s Culture Minister, Miri Regev, denounced his second feature, Foxtrot, over a scene in which the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) covers up the deaths of a carload of Palestinian youths, such accusations were hurled against him, as well as against the film’s lead actor, Lior Ashkenazi, on social media.

Maoz has since revealed he was also threatened with acid attacks, while Ashkenazi’s five-year-old daughter was the subject of death threats.

The film-maker was aware he was dealing with touchy subject matter.

“I knew if I had made a film about a horrible crime happening in the police, the next morning nobody would give a damn,” Maoz tells me.

“But I chose the army, because in Israel everyone does it, so the army reflects society. And I knew that [made it] a sensitive topic.”

His award-winning first film, Lebanon, drew on his experience as a tank gunner during the first Lebanon War, and the haunting memory of killing an innocent farmer mistaken for the enemy. “I knew this was the moment I f***ed my life,” he says.

Foxtrot reflects the trauma Maoz was left with, and the trauma he believes has been transmitted from generation to generation of Israelis since the Holocaust, compounded by the country’s conflicts with her neighbours, creating an “anxious society and a distorted perception”.

Today, the country has nuclear

arms and is strong enough to repel most threats.

In a recent interview, Maoz said: “You cannot compare the situation to the Holocaust, but we still continue to treat this danger [from outside] as if it were the same [existential danger].”

This is the meaning of the film’s surreal mid-section, set at a military roadblock in a muddy wasteland, which he designed as an allegory to compel his countrymen to look beyond the specifics and see the “broad picture”.

The bored young soldiers barracked in a freight container that is gradually sinking are part of an “unhealthy situation” that is “getting more and more crooked,” says Maoz.

When they kill out of fear and the evidence is covered up, “it expresses, for me, regret and denial”, he says, adding: “We prefer to bury the wound in the mud that we created rather than confront it and ask ourselves penetrating questions.”

nazi) – like Maoz a second-generation Holocaust survivor and Lebanon war veteran – whose demons are laid bare after his soldier son is reported dead.

Maoz wrote the character, having wrestled with the legacy of his own wartime experience for decades.

When he made Lebanon in 2009, the film had poured out of him, he says, because it came from a “need to unload, to expose the world as it is, naked, without all the heroic stuff. And it was probably a need to forgive myself”.

Foxtrot, a meditation on grief and fate, was more difficult because he no longer had the same need.

“Lebanon is like a punch in the stomach, it’s a shocking film. Here, I wanted to do something more complex, more philosophical, more elegant. So it was harder.”

While his inspiration seems to be a case of mistaken identity that ensnared the family of someone from his unit in Lebanon, the film’s emotional core is the anxiety he expe-

rienced when he thought his eldest daughter had been murdered by terrorists.

She always got up late for school, he says, and as a punishment, he’d refused to pay for another taxi and insisted she went on a bus like everyone else. I told her she needed to learn the hard way how to wake up on time,” recalls Maoz.

“The bus was Line 5. And about half an hour after she left, I hear on the radio a terrorist blew himself

up on Line 5, and dozens of people were killed. I tried to call her, but the cellular operator crashed because of the unexpected load. So I experienced the worst hour of my life. It was worse than all the Lebanon war.”

Luckily, she’d been late and the driver had refused to let her on. “So I asked myself, what can I learn from it,” says Maoz, “because I did something that seemed right and logical to do?”

The answer, he realised, is nothing.

“That is the tragedy. And this is, maybe, the gap between the things we control and those beyond our control.”

This is also the philosophical quandary in which Michael finds himself.

Like the director, he makes a decision that seems correct, but has unforeseen consequences. He, and by implication Israeli society, is trapped in a pattern that, like the eponymous foxtrot dance, always ends where it began.

“Why do we behave the way we do?

That’s the big question I’m asking,” says Maoz.  Foxtrot (15) is released in Curzon cinemas from tomorrow

Keep Calne and carry on Barry Borman explores the dramatic beauty of Wiltshire, unwinds at a fine country hotel and discovers the village where Downton Abbey and Harry Potter were filmed

I

t’s not surprising that it’s been used as the backdrop to a number of films and TV programmes, including Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey and Larkrise to Candleford. Snuggled in the midst of the village is The George Inn, dating from 1361, with exposed beams, a roaring log fireplace in winter and a “dog wheel” – rotated in times past by specially bred dogs to cook the meat on a revolving spit.

Lacock Abbey, founded in 1232, was decommissioned in Henry VIII’s reformatory blitz. Its historic medieval cloisters remain and, indeed, posed as Hogwarts School in some of the Harry Potter films.

Time it right (there’s only a few weeks leeway each year) and a visit to the Bowood Estate, near Calne in

Wiltshire, delivers a triple whammy: A booking at the Bowood Hotel and Spa includes free entry to the stately Bowood House, coupled with access to the Woodland Gardens, which become a riot of colour in the spring.

The weather looked promising, so we quickly checked in at the hotel, collected our free entry voucher and headed straight there, less than a fiveminute drive away and usually open from the end of April until early June.

Within 30 acres of gorgeous countryside, criss-crossed with an attractive network of grassed paths including a “Walk of the Week,” offering the best vistas, the gardens enchanted us with a spectacular multi-hued profusion of fragrant rhododendrons and azaleas.

The estate is owned by the Marquess of Lansdowne, whose prede-

cessors originated the planting and, saving the best for last, we climb the hill to the family mausoleum, built by the celebrated architect Robert Adam in the 1760s. From here, there’s a dramatic panorama across the layers of spring colour, together with farreaching views along the Downs.

It’s very convenient to pop back to the hotel for some light refreshments or a full-blown country house cream tea and then, only five minutes away, we arrive at Bowood House itself.

There, ensconced on a sunny bench in the south-facing formal terrace, we admire the precisionsheared topiary and gaze out over 2,000 acres of one of Capability Brown’s finest parks.

Later, we stretch our legs exploring the shores of the graceful lake, which comes complete with Doric Temple, charming cascade and grotto.

The house itself has been the Lansdowne family’s home since 1754 with Adam’s elegant Orangery now transformed into a picture gallery housing family portraits and a collection of notable Old Masters.

Also of interest is the laboratory where scientist Joseph Priestley, who tutored the sons of the Marquess, discovered oxygen in 1774.

Priestley, a resident of Calne, was not only a scientist, but also an outspoken Hebrew-speaking theologian.

In that capacity, he published Letters to the Jews, arguing that Jews

should either admit the legitimacy of Christian beliefs or convert.

This prompted a vigorous response from the English Hebraist David Levi, who published Letters to Dr. Priestley, upholding orthodoxy and highlighting the inconsistencies of Priestley’s stance.

Levi’s book was published in 1794

by New York’s first Jewish bookseller, Benjamin Gomez, the first time that a book defending Judaism had been published by a Jew. A copy of this book recently sold at auction for a price in excess of $2,000.

For those with kids in tow, there’s Tractor Ted’s Little Farm which, on selected Bank Holidays, transforms itself into a huge, all-singing, alldancing celebration of all things to do with tractors.

It offers a whole range of hands-on rides and drives which judging from the number of participating fathers delighted more than just the children.

After a full day on the Bowood Estate, we welcomed retiring to the hotel, stunningly cocooned within its own “en suite” championship golf course, for some welcome relaxation and pampering.

We chose a room overlooking the practise greens and a lake festooned with ducks, the balcony a personal retreat on which to unwind, chilled beer in hand, drinking in the serenity of the sunset.

The more active can bike-ride in

the gym and sweat it off in the sauna, finishing with a revitalising plunge in the spa’s beautifully-appointed infinity pool.

In the evening, the Shelburne Restaurant, overlooking the parkland, offers fine dining with a thoughtfullycurated selection of dishes and a separate vegetarian menu, followed by a tranquil nightcap in the seductive, olde-worlde library.

The next day we discover the National Trust village of Lacock. No more than 20 minutes’ drive away, it boasts black-and-white half-timbered houses, picturesque winding lanes and quaint shops transporting visitors back through the centuries.

Following its closure, Lacock Abbey became a privately-owned house and was acquired by William Henry Fox Talbot in the 19th century.

Fox Talbot was determined to discover how to “fix images” and his revelatory work at the abbey resulted in the world’s earliest surviving photographic negative.

Amazingly, the subject matter of this historic image can still be seen, a latticed window in the building’s south gallery.

There’s much more of interest to see in the on-site Photography Museum, featuring an exhibition of his life’s work and a fascinating collection (before we forget what they look like!) of original cameras.

Slow roasted lamb with dried cherries

Serves 4

COOKING TIME 3 HOURS

INGREDIENTS

When rolled lamb is cooked slowly, the meat becomes amazingly succulent and tender; each mouthful just melts in the mouth.

With no bone, this is easy to carve, with no waste and very little fat.

I have flavoured this with rosemary, sweet paprika, cumin and a sprinkling of cinnamon. The cherries add a pleasant sweetness in the sauce that is served separately. It is a great Friday night meal.

Enjoy with rice or cous cous.

Ingredients 1kg rolled lamb – netting removed, but retain the string 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 tablespoon dried cumin 1 teaspoon dried cinnamon Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 200ml red wine 100ml chicken stock 100g dried cherries 2 leeks – sliced thinly 4 sprigs fresh rosemary

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C /325°F /Gas mark 3.

2 Dust and season the lamb with paprika, cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper.

3 Heat the rapeseed oil in a shallow pan and sauté the meat on both sides to seal the spices. Transfer to a deep ovenware dish.

4 C ombine the wine, chicken stock, dried cherries, leeks and rosemary and pour into the ovenware dish.

5 Cover with a lid or foil and roast for three hours.

6 Remove the lamb from the gravy and leave for 20 minutes covered before carving.

With

7 Transfer the gravy to a saucepan.

8 Combine two tablespoons of water with the corn flour, add the red wine and simmer, stirring continuously for five minutes to thicken and reduce. Sieve and then season.

Gravy: 1 tablespoon corn flour 100 ml red wine

9 Serve the gravy separately.

Vayakhel-Shekalim What does it say about... Prince Philip’s driving?

BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS The Haftorah this week reminds us of the half-shekel donated by every adult to the upkeep of the Temple in ancient times.

Traditionally this half-shekel was donated at the start of Nissan, although today we have the custom to give it on Purim so we won’t forget, and it goes to charity.

The Kings of Israel and Judah were sometimes godly and sometimes wicked. One of the worst was Ahab, married to Jezebel. His daughter Ataliah had all the Royal Family of Judah slaughtered except for Joash, which precipitated a revolution, and the last remaining member of the Royal family was hidden in the Temple. Joash thus ascended to the throne aged seven and decreed all the money brought to the Temple should be used on its repairs. Twenty-three years later, his decree seems to have been ignored and he proposed a solution to this problem – the money seems to have stuck to some people’s hands.

The High Priest Yehoyada had a chest made with a hole in the top – the first recorded instance of a tzeddakah box – and whenever someone brought money to the Kohanim, they’d drop the money into it, and it was distributed to the workmen.

They were not subjected to any kind of audit. The wages of those workmen were distributed in specie (coin) and they received them without scruple, knowing they were entitled to payment, and without diffidence from the great reliance they placed upon the integrity of their employers. This should be the kind of honesty we can expect from every employer, and it is appropriate it is recorded by reading it every year in shul.

In recent weeks Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, voluntarily gave up his driving licence following a collision with another car. So, what does the Torah say about balancing the needs of others while respecting our elders?

The commandment to honour the elderly (Leviticus 19:32) reminds us that while many may have forgotten their wisdom in later years, it does not diminish their value.

“Be mindful of the elderly person who has forgotten his teaching for reasons that are not his fault, as it is said that the broken tablets rested with the second set of tablets in the ark (Brachot 8b)”.

Maimonides states that we must honour the elderly, even if we do not consider them a sage, because of their

life experience. “Rabbi Yochanan would stand in deference to an aged gentile, explaining, ‘How many experiences has he gone through!’ Rabbah would show them respect as well and Abbaye would offer the gentile elders a hand and help them walk (Kidushin 33a).”

BY RABBI MIRIAM BERGER The Torah tells men to be careful sitting on a chair I have sat in as, had I been menstruating, the chair can transfer my impurity to them (Leviticus 15:26).

For decades, I followed a Progressive Jewish line that taharat ha-mishpachah, family purity laws, from which this is taken, is a nonsense in our time; that such disgust around menstruation is part of an oppressive patriarchy of which I need to take no part.

Periods have played no significant role in most of my life; they didn’t bring me discomfort or stop me doing anything and I was fortunate not to be one of the millions of women around the world who find sanitary hygiene products prohibitively expensive.

They were a mild inconvenience, until I was battling with infertility and each period represented a small bereavement, the end of the potential life I dreamed I was carrying.

So in work or out with friends, no one would know the chair I sat on was supporting my body through grief.

I am determined to help women in this situation to refind mikveh for our time, so that each month is grieved for and each new month is begun with renewed hope and vigour.

BY RABBI DANNY RICH The re-emergence of Shamima Begum with her newborn son in a refugee camp in Syria raises many conundrums including the theological and political. Begum was born, raised and radicalised in the United Kingdom. She left in 2015 at the age of 15, using her sister’s passport, to join the so-called Islamic State terrorist group in Syria.

According to what she has been reported as saying, she retains an arrogance of youth and what I would describe as, a “perverse sense of morality” which may arise from her age, her immature intellect, exposure to propaganda or indeed probably a combination of all three.

In a recent interview she asked for “forgiveness”, although it is unclear what sin it is that she has committed. There is no evidence that she has been directly involved in atrocities of any description.

I suspect what she means by forgiveness is either that the British

public and institutions should treat her kindly and fairly, or she is acknowledging her part in encouraging others to flee and join the so-called Islamic State’s barbarity.

Forgiveness in Jewish thought involves first approaching the person that one has wronged with a genuine intention to make reparation with a desire not to repeat the offence. It is only, thereafter, that one can make atonement with God who welcomes the genuine, repentant sinner. There is, of

course, the rabbinic idea of causing another to sin, but it would be unlikely that a foolish decision by a 15-year-old girl under the influence of radical speakers would itself fall into this category. If, however, she is appealing to the Jewish and British sense of justice, of mercy and generosity, she will receive my sympathy, even though some of what she says hardly aids her own case.

She is still relatively young and the mother of an innocent, newborn child. She was also – even willingly – the victim of pernicious propaganda for which, of course, the perpetrators bear most responsibility, but so do the social media sites which fail to filter their material appropriately.

As I think of Shamima Begum and expressing forgiveness, I am drawn to Hillel’s words in Pirkei Avot (2:4), which declares: “Do not judge others until you are in their place.”  Rabbi Danny Rich is Liberal
