Corbyn couldn’t have been unaware of the message this would send at such a hyper-sensitive moment. It certainly wasn’t lost on Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, who can’t be accused of shying away from engaging with all parts of the community. For her, Corbyn’s presence at this seder was a step too far. She walked in – and then walked out. That’s how toxic his brand has become in large parts of the community. Last week, following our exclusive interview with Jeremy Corbyn, Jewish News declared the Labour leader’s reassurances on tackling anti-Semitism in his party were simply “Not good enough”. His failure to condemn the characterisation of some allegations as “smears” compounded worries. His description of the fringe group that staged a counter-demo to the main ‘Enough is enough’ event as “good people” left many fuming. How could he go out of his way to endorse a group that itself had gone out of its way to claim a situation that brought thousands of British Jews on to the streets was exaggerated, driven by a political agenda?
