Jeremy Corbyn has insisted he doesn’t want the support of anyone directing abuse at his MPs over their attendance at the community’s rally against anti-Semitism – but has provoked anger by describing the small band of counter-demonstrators as “good people”. In his first interview with the Jewish media since becoming Labour leader, Jewish News pressed him on his long record of associating with those with anti-Semitic views and the unprecedented criticism levelled at his approach to anti-Semitism by community leaders this week. Luciana Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree, last week highlighted how Corbyn questioned the removal of a mural with anti-Semitic imagery in 2012, and then joined dozens of her fellow MPs at a rally organised by the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council on Monday. She has since been bombarded with abuse alleging a Tory plot and accusing her of smears. “I support her,” Corbyn said. “None of it can be done in our name or my name. I don’t want anybody who is abusing anybody.” He also insisted David Lammy should not face deselection for supporting the rally, as has been urged by some on social media. But, in comments that will cause considerable concern in the mainstream community, he described Jewish Voice for Labour – who were involved in a small counter demo against the main communal event as “nice people”. They put out a statement attributing the event to the local elections rather than the fight against anti-Semitism. Key members were also shown by blogger David Collier to be part of the hatefilled Palestine Live Facebook group. But Corbyn said: “JVL are committed to fighting anti-Semitism and making sure there is a Jewish voice in the party. We already have the Jewish Labour Movement. JVL was established last year and I think it is good that we have organisations within the party that are giving that voice to people. I’m not a member of that or JLM but they’re good people, they are in the party because they love and believe in it.” He revealed he had instructed incoming secretary general Jennie Formby to make the full implementation of the Chakrabarti report her first priority and was looking at how to speed up the disciplinary process. One hundred and fifty cases of the 300 referrals for anti-Semitism since 2015 had seen expulsions or resignations, he said.

Jewish News (JN): More than 1,500 people felt compelled to come onto the streets of London on Monday to protest you and your party’s handling of anti-Semitism – some of whom are ready to call you an anti-Semite. How does that make you feel? Jeremy Corbyn (JC): I’m not an anti-Semite in any way, never have been, never will be. I’ve opposed racism in any form all my life. It’s the way I was brought up, it’s the way I’ve lived my life. I recognise the hurt that’s felt within the community and that’s why I responded immediately with an invitation to the Jewish Leadership Council and the Board of Deputies to come and meet me. I did say that processes in our party had to be speeded up and that all of the recommendations of the Chakrabarti report had to be carried out so we could address the issue. Let me say this very bluntly: anti-Semitism is a cancer in our society and it has resurfaced across Europe and in Britain in recent years. It has to be challenged at every single stage. JN: Were you ashamed to see such large numbers angrily take to the streets? JC: It makes me determined.

JN: I’m interested in how you feel as a human being, when you see that stuff every day… JC: I am concerned. Of course I want to do something about it – and that’s what I’m doing. JN: There are MPs who have been comfortable saying they’re ashamed of the party that they’ve been attached to their whole lives. You don’t seem to feel you can go that far? JC: Look, I want to be proud of our party, I want to deal with these issues and that’s what I am doing. JN: How do you explain, then, to our readers who really don’t understand how an antiracist has repeatedly come to be associated, to repeatedly lend support to people with anti-Semitic views while still saying you have this zero-tolerance approach? JC: I have zero-tolerance of racism. I want to see, as I’ve repeated, a peace process in the Middle East. I want to see a society free of the scourge of racism, and our party conference last year passed a very strict and very clear rule

on this. And that has been repeated to all party members. There is also an education process in place, which we will develop even further, because we want people to understand what it is like to be accused of something because of your ethnicity, because of your faith, because of where you come from. It is very hurtful but also very dangerous and corrosive to our whole society. So today I say quite clearly, anti-Semitism is completely wrong, as is any other form of racism. JN: One example is Raed Salah who had been accused of a blood libel among many other things, yet you called him “an honoured citizen”? JC: I met Raed Salah after he’d appealed the case. He came to Britain as an Israeli citizen and was given normal access and normal entry. There was later a ban order placed on him by the Home Office, which was challenged in court. He was released, essentially on house bail. He then challenged in court the whole process and actually he won the case on his right to be visiting Britain. I

JN: In the last few days alone, we’ve seen a candidate removed for alleged Holocaust denial, MPs who came out to protest against anti-Semitism being targeted by a blog that supports you and Jewish councillors in Haringey speaking out about the terrible treatment they faced. Surely this makes you profoundly concerned, even ashamed? JC: Any abuse makes me profoundly concerned and any abuse that is done is certainly not done in my name. People have a right to speak out and a right to demonstrate and that surely is something that is intrinsic in any democratic society. I will not tolerate abuse of people for their beliefs.

I questioned him on the whole blood libel issue, which he emphatically denied and the conversation I had with him was along the lines of ‘what kind of future peace can there be,’ ‘what kind of relationship can there be between Israel and the Palestinians’. Does it mean I agree with everything he’s ever said? Obviously not. He was

later convicted in Israel on that case, but it was not a pending case at that time. But I did make my position extremely clear to him and I felt it was right to have that discussion. You have to have discussions with people you disagree with within the Israeli-Palestinian community. JN: You’ve said he didn’t say anything antiSemitic to you but it didn’t change the fact

he faced accusations and you said you’d be happy to welcome him for tea in Parliament. JC: That was when he was here and then the order was placed by the Home Office after he’d arrived, which was a little unusual, because he was already here. I met him, I set out my views, I asked him for his views and we had a discussion about future prospects for peace and a two-state solution to the Middle East crisis.

JN: Another expression of regret you’ve made is in relation to your description of Hamas and Hezbollah as ‘friends’. Can you see that to call a group that wants me dead, wants our readers dead, wants all their relatives in Israel and around the world dead, means British Jews are bound to be profoundly concerned? JC: The context was a discussion about a future peace in the Middle East. I used that language. I obviously realise this can be misinterpreted and indeed has been. I clearly do not support their views but recognise – and I’m sure everyone else does – that there has to be a peace process that involves all groups in the Middle East, and that indeed is what many people have attempted to bring about over past governments.

JN: However, you seem to be willing, over many years and consistently, to overlook the inconvenient truth of the background of people you’ve associated with, what you knew to be allegations against them, what you knew to be the Hamas charter, because you supported the Palestinian cause. Surely there are people in the Palestinian cause who you felt able to associate with who hadn’t said or didn’t stand for horrific things. JC: People turned up at Palestine meetings that I’ve been at and indulged in language of Holocaust denial, or have indulged in antiSemitic language, or who have abused people because of their faith. We chucked them out. I’ve been at meetings where I’ve voted for people to be excluded because of their language and the use that they put to it. There is no place for that kind of thing in bringing about a serious peace process.

Continued from pages 2 & 3 JN: On Hezbollah you have attended a number of Al Quds Day parades. Hezbollah supports obliterating the state of Israel. You’ve said you support the existence of Israel and that anything other than that is anti-Semitic, so why would you attend… JC: I’d argue that there has to be a just solution for the whole region. That means the settlement policy should end, the occupation of the West Bank should end, to have an effective two-state solution. As you know my party’s policy, which Ed Miliband led us on, was for recognition of Palestine alongside the state of Israel, and that was included in our manifesto as well. Indeed, that’s what Parliament voted for. JN: Hezbollah’s flag has a gun on it. You’ve marched with that flag repeatedly. JC: I do not support Hezbollah. JN: So you shouldn’t have been at the march? JC: I’d rather the flag hadn’t been. JN: And what about you? JC: I was on a march for the rights of Palestinian people. There are many people in Israel who would recognise there also has to be justice for the Palestinians. That means the settlement policy and the occupation has to end.

It’s obviously a just cause… JC: I’ve seen Jewish people on all the Palestinian events, particularly those organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and I work with them. Indeed there are a number of rabbis who attend and that’s absolutely right and proper

JN: It looks as if you care more about Palestinian rights than the allegations from the mainstream Jewish community about anti-Semitism and those associated with it. JC: Not at all. Anti-Semitism is a poison and evil and wrong that brought about genocide of the Holocaust against the Jewish people. It’s what our parents’ generation fought to defeat. There has to be a process to bring about peace in the Middle East and that has to involve justice for the Palestinian people and an end to the occupation and the settlement policy so Palestinians can also grow up in peace and their own security. The best security is peace. JN: In almost every case of suspensions and expulsions from Labour we’ve seen people who considered themselves activists for Palestine, but who crossed the line into antiSemitism. Is there a problem within the pro-Palestinian movement in general? JC: I don’t think it’s a general problem. There are anti-Semitic people who latch onto all kinds of causes, but in my experience in the Palestine Solidarity Campaign they were absolutely assiduous and specific. They’re not accepting Holocaust denial and they’re not allowing anti-Semitic behaviour to take place. Of the Labour Party cases, some of which I inherited on becoming leader, there’s been 300 references since 2015, 60 are still under

investigation, 24 have gone to the National Constitutional Committee, 24, roughly, went to a final warning, and 150 were either expelled or resigned. That represents 0.02 percent of the party membership. There are other cases pending. I’ve said to our newly-appointed general secretary that her first priority has to be the full implementation of the Chakrabarti Report and there has to be an appointment of an in-house lawyer, a legal team, to ensure there is a proper approach to all of these cases and of the – I understand – 70 cases due to be dealt with. They must be dealt with as quickly as possible. I’ve looked again at the procedures of what is, after all, a member-led organisation and it means getting lay members to deal with committees and appeals. I’ve looked at ways in which we can speed that up. I’m leader of the party and very proud to be, but there are rules and processes I have to follow. JN: Some people suggest that to raise your past connections amounts to a smear. Is it legitimate for me to ask you about these connections or is that also a smear? JC: No, it’s perfectly reasonable to raise any question about one’s public profile activities. So I don’t see that as a smear. I hope I get a fair hearing, I hope I get a recognition that all of my life I’ve opposed racism in any form, be it National Front, the BNP, English Defence League, whatever else, in my time as MP for Islington North and before that at council in Haringey, or before that as an anti-racist activist in rural Shropshire in the 1970s. I go back a long way on this. JN: Nevertheless, do you understand why our readers would have such concern about your suitability to be their prime minister? JC: They have asked the questions and that’s reasonable. I’m opposed to anti-Semitism in any form and I’ve made that abundantly clear and I think your readers will accept the letters I sent on Sunday in relation to the statements put out, my offer to meet the Board of Deputies (BOD) and the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) constitute that. And I’m also very proud to work with the Jewish community locally and continue to do so. I was the one person who was clear on commemorating the contribution made by Jewish people to my community. I was among those who helped prevent building over the Jewish cemetery. There’s been a massive contribution made by Jewish activists and intellectuals to the Labour movement in Britain; they were there at the founding of the party.

Can you make it clear you don’t support anyone expressing such views? JC: Absolutely. Luciana has suffered terrible abuse and I support her. None of it can be done in our name or in my name. It’s just not acceptable. The two women who have received the most abuse appear to be Luciana Berger and Diane Abbott. It’s equally wrong. JN: I’m talking about the specific abuse Luciana received as a result of standing up against anti-Semitism at this rally. JC: She should not be abused. JN: Our readers might think that if we had been talking about racism aimed at the black or the Muslim community, you would have done something before now. JC: I’ve dealt with racism in any form within our party and indeed racism within our society. I represent a very mixed community. Islamophobia is a problem and has been a growing problem and I’ve locally met people from the mosque and so on to deal with that and indeed Muslim women groups because they have suffered the most in exactly the same way as many Jewish people have suffered abuse as well. Abuse is wrong whoever it is against. JN: In the letter this week from the community leadership, they point out the specific difference between anti-Semitism

and other forms of racism in that Jews are viewed as all-powerful. JC: Yes I do recognise that. It’s completely unacceptable and I do not allow or subscribe in any way to those kind of theories. JN: Are you ready now to separate those two, to recognise that when you are talking about anti-Semitism, there is this difference? JC: There is a difference and I understand and accept that. In the conference speeches I’ve made it clear I do recognise the specificity of anti-Semitism. JN: Luciana Berger highlighted the antiSemitic mural and your comments around that in 2012. She’s been accused of being in the wrong party for bringing it up, accused of being a racist because of her links to

JN: There have been calls for David Lammy to be deselected in Tottenham because he turned out to support the rally against antiSemitism. Again will you make it clear that you don’t want anyone deselected? JC: It’s up to the local party, but not for that, no. Obviously the local parties must decide what they want to do in the future. David Lammy is a colleague, a friend of mine, I admire what he stands for and what he does and he should not be condemned for that. JN: Some of your key supporters are still calling allegations of anti-Semitism smears including Chris Williamson. Are they smears? JC: I am not an anti-Semite in any form, therefore it’s unfair to say that and I hope people would understand that. I’ve recognised there is an existence of it [anti-Semitism in the party], I’ve recognised the vitality, the

importance, the crucial nature of getting rid of it. JN: Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) organised a counter-demo to the main from the Board and JLC. They put out a shocking statement saying it was about local elections and not the fight against anti-Semitism. Will you distance yourself from that comment? JC: JVL are committed to fighting anti-Semitism and making sure there is a Jewish voice in the party. We already have the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM). JVL was established last year and it is good we have organisations within the party that are giving that voice to people. [JLM and JVL] are good people, they are in the party because they love and believe in it. JN: For many people, the fact Ken Livingstone hasn’t been expelled remains the biggest sore. Do you think he has a place in the party? JC: Ken was suspended in April 2016 for two years and a further administrative suspension after April 2018 was imposed by the outgoing general secretary. That now has to be subject to investigation. Ken will have a right to be heard. JN: Do you want him to remain in Labour? JC: It’s not up to me to decide, there is a process and the process is going on. There are legal considerations around all these processes. More than 1,500 people packed into Parliament Square this week for an unprecedented display of “fury” against Labour’s actions towards anti-Semitism, writes Justin Cohen. Politicians from across the spectrum joined community leaders demanding the end to “fake” statements and the start of decisive action to tackle the scourge in his ranks, for which he apologised on Monday night. As the simmering anger over the twoyear anti-Semitism controversy surrounding Labour moved on to the streets for the first time, participants held banners proclaiming ‘No to anti-Semitism: enough is enough’. Jonathan Goldstein, the chair of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) – which organised the event with the Board of Deputies – hailed the huge turnout from the Jewish community and allies, just 24 hours after the event was announced. “We’re here to tell Jeremy Corbyn that enough is enough. The presence of politicians of all stripes is a reminder that we’re not alone in this fight. You are our heroes,” he said. “Anti-Semitism has no place whatsoever in a mainstream political party. The time for talking is over. The time for words is over. The time for action is here.” Speaker after speaker spoke of their sorrow at having to resort to such an event. Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush said he had never before seen such anger towards a major political party, adding: “I hope today’s event will never be repeated.” Community members were “tired of fake statements” against anti-Semitism from the leader that weren’t backed up by sufficient action, he said. by Shami Chakrabarti and the initial suppression of the probe into the Oxford Labour Club, he added: “Jeremy Corbyn needs to lead a cultural shift at every level of the party. This is his chance if he can take it. “Finally, finally, Jeremy, take some responsibility because it’s you and your leadership who are responsible for this and have the power to do something. The Labour Party must go back to being the enemy of racists not the refuge of racists.” He name-checked many of the MPs who joined the event before attending the weekly

Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) meeting, including Luciana Berger, John Ryan, Angela Smith, Chuka Umunna, Wes Streeting, Liz Kendall and John Mann – each receiving a round of applause. They were joined in the square by current and former Tory MPs, including Sajid Javid, Sir Eric Pickles, Theresa Villiers and Mike Freer. The final straw that provoked the demonstration was Corbyn’s reaction to revelations he had questioned the removal of an anti-Semitic mural in 2012 – for which he has now apologised. Mann, who led the fight against Ken Livingstone following his comments about Hitler and

Zionism, apologised “on my behalf and on behalf of every MP that you’ve had to take the time to come here today”. He added: “What on earth is going wrong with our party when this event has to be considered? We are not prepared to accept anyone staying in our party who is a racist.” He called on Corbyn to “say tonight that every anti-Semite is expelled immediately. Nothing less will do”. And he warned: “The very existence of the Labour Party is at stake.” While no speaker went near calling for an end to Corbyn’s leadership, there were occasional outbursts from the audience urging such a move.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn may have apologised for ‘hurt and pain’ caused by ‘pockets’ of anti-Semitism, but many of his followers fervently reject the problem exists in the party at all. They’re wrong, and I can prove it. As Jewish News’ online editor, I have first-hand knowledge of the existence of the scourge. This week I compiled a Twitter thread documenting no fewer than 41 of these instances. There are far, far more and the problem ranges from brazen examples to more subtle forms of Jew-hate. It’s undeniable. Jeremy Corbyn himself calls

Hamas and Hezbollah ‘friends’, while supporting convicted blood libel Sheikh Raed Salah. But there are also subtle, new forms of hate, shrouded in newfangled rhetoric often referring to ‘Zionism’ or the Middle East conflict. Corbyn was a member of both Palestine Live and the History of Palestine Facebook groups, which were riddled with anti-Semitism, often hiding behind pro-Palestine activism. Palestine Live was exposed by blogger David Collier, while the History of Palestine included posts about Israel harvesting organs. Corbyn supposedly didn’t know about or see the anti-Semitic content present in these groups, but was seen commenting in them nonetheless.

A man named ‘Ali Mosabbir’ added Corbyn to the History of Palestine group. On Friday, as the scandal over the anti-Semitic mural was breaking, he revealed his views in a single tweet. He said the election of Miriam Mirwitch, a Jewish woman, as chair of the Young Labour, was a plan to turn it into the ‘Jews Labour Party’. While he states he is a member of Labour and Momentum on social media, the party says he was expelled in September 2017. These are the circles in which Corbyn lives. There is anti-Semitism found in comparisons to the Shoah. After saying in 2016 that Hitler had supported Zionism, this year, Ken Livingstone marked Holocaust Memorial Day by appearing on Press TV

to ask “has the Holocaust been exploited to oppress others?”. He is suspended from Labour – so remains in the party. Why? Other examples include Vicki Kirby, who posted incendiary tweets about “the real oppressors” Israel, in which she said “Hitler now seems to be their teacher”, calling him a “Zionist god”. She is purposefully flipping the oppressor with the oppressed, implying Israel is the new Nazis. On a local level, Labour council candidate Alan Bull said the Holocaust was a ‘hoax’. It’s clear anti-Semitism. Whatever form anti-Semitism takes in Labour – you can rest assured that accusations of anti-Semitism will be accompanied by denial.

Whether that’s MP Chris Williamson saying anti-Semitism has been ‘weaponised’ and calling suspensions ‘ridiculous’ – or claims of antiSemitism being dismissed with the stock phrase: ‘criticising Israel isn’t the same as anti-Semitism’. Jews have had enough of being dismissed as leading attention-seeking and politically-motivated ‘smears’. This problem won’t go away until it’s tackled at the root – from the top down, from the example set by the leader – and that is why the Board and JLC demonstrated in Westminster. The inadequate platitudes that bang on about procedures for getting rid of Jew-hate have to end. Action is needed before there are no more Jews in the Labour Party.

Claire Kober, the former leader of Haringey Council, said she agreed with every word of the statement from the Board and JLC that accused Corbyn of repeatedly “siding with anti-Semites rather than Jews”. This letter was handed to PLP chair John Cryer before the weekly meeting of Labour MPs. “I’m sick of the culture of victim blaming. I’m sick of the toll it’s taking on my Jewish neighbours and friends. Im aghast that Ken Livingstone remains a member of the Labour Party,” she said, adding that it should not be left to Jews to call out anti-Semitism. Taking to the stump, Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger highlighted a series troubling incidents inside the party in the last

week alone, including the suspension of a candidate over alleged Holocaust denial. She told the crowds: “Going forward, I want to address Jewish audiences with my head held high. Prevarication is not acceptable, being a bystander is not acceptable. The time for action is now.” Wes Streeting, MP for Iford North, described the rally as “a moment of great pain” for the MPs and peers present. He wrote: “I acknowledge that anti-Semitic attitudes have surfaced more often in our ranks in recent years. Early action has nevertheless been taken, and we will work to speed up procedures, to deal with cases of anti-Semitic abuse.”

PRECONDITIONS SET FOR MEETING Jewish leaders last night issued a set of preconditions to be met before they would agree to meet with Jeremy Corbyn. In a joint statement on Wednesday from Jonathan Goldstein, chair of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board of Deputies, the Labour leader was warned that the Jewish community “needs to hear you say, publicly and in your own voice, that we had every right to protest about anti-Semitism, and that Labour MPs had every right to support us. That our concerns about anti-Semitism are sincere and not a “smear” as has been widely alleged (including on your own Facebook page); and that anyone directing abuse, intimidation or threats at those of us who oppose anti-Semitism is damaging your efforts to eliminate it and to start rebuilding trust. We firmly believe that this must happen urgently, and certainly before we can meet.” Meanwhile, a Jewish Labour peer has urged the community not to accept invitations to talks until they see concrete action – while Lord Mendelsohn, president of the Commonwealth Jewish Council, praised the Board and JLC “for their courage and leadership to confront anti-Semitism”. He urged the community “to hold firm and wait for Labour to demonstrate it is prepared to change by a concrete show of its determination to expel those guilty of anti-Semitism”.

‘Enough is enough’ Here’s the abridged text of the open letter to Jeremy Corbyn from the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council: Today, leaders of British Jewry tell Jeremy Corbyn that enough is enough. We have had enough of hearing that he “opposes antiSemitism”, while the mainstream majority of British Jews, and their concerns, are ignored by him and those he leads. There is a repeated institutional failure to properly address Jewish concerns and to tackle anti-Semitism, with the Chakrabarti Report being the most glaring example. Corbyn did not invent this form of politics, but he has had a lifetime within it, and now personifies its problems and dangers. He issues empty statements about opposing anti-Semitism, but does nothing to understand or address it. When Jews complain about an obviously anti-Semitic mural, Corbyn supports the artist. Hezbollah commits terrorist atrocities against Jews, but he calls them his friends and attends pro-Hezbollah rallies in London. The same goes for Hamas. Raed Salah says Jews kill Christian children to drink their blood. Corbyn opposes his extradition and invites him for tea at the House of Commons. These are not the only cases. He is repeatedly found alongside

people with blatantly anti-Semitic views, but claims never to hear or read them. Again and again, he has sided with antiSemites rather than Jews. At best, this derives from the far left’s obsessive hatred of Zionism, Zionists and Israel. At worst, it suggests a conspiratorial worldview in which mainstream Jewish communities are believed to be a class enemy. When Corbyn was elected Labour Party leader, Jews expressed profound fears as to how such politics would impact upon their wellbeing. Our concerns were never taken seriously. Three years on, the party and British Jews are reaping the consequences. Routine statements against anti-Semitism “and all forms of racism” get nowhere near dealing with the problem, because what distinguishes anti-Semitism from other forms of racism is the power Jews are alleged to hold, and how they are charged

with conspiring together against good. There is not a single day in which Labour Party spaces do not repeat the same fundamental anti-Semitic slanders against Jews. We are told our concerns are faked, and done at the command of Israel and/or Zionism (whatever that means); that antiSemitism is merely “criticism of Israel”; that we call any and all criticism of Israel “anti-Semitic”; that the Rothschilds run the world; that ISIS terrorism is a fake front for Israel; that Zionists are the new Nazis. Those who push this offensive material regard Corbyn as their figurehead. They display an obsessive hatred of Israel alongside conspiracy theories and fake news. These repeated actions harm British Jews and to the British Labour Party. Jeremy Corbyn is the only one with the standing to demand all of this stops. Enough is enough.

Events in recent days, triggered by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s response to a Facebook post about an anti-Semitic mural, have concentrated the minds of Labour Party members. For too long, the mainstream left has chosen not to confront the fact that Labour has seen an exponential growth in anti-Semitic sentiment. For too long, we have chosen to mutter disapproval of this virulent form of racism, rather than to confront it. Now, however, it is no longer possible to ignore the reality that Labour is badly tainted by a strain of left-wing thought that prefers to deny Israel’s right to exist and which pursues the ancient conspiracy theories relating to the Jewish community. It’s time to stand up to this

and to insist that the Labour leadership should root it out. Enough is enough. That’s why Monday night’s Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) meeting was so important. First of all, many Labour MPs joined the demo on Parliament Green. Then they moved on to the PLP meeting, to take to the party leadership the message they had heard so loudly and so clearly outside. The meeting was powerful and emotional. Colleagues talked about what we needed to see from the leadership. We made it clear we needed to see actions as well as words, actions giving us confidence that Corbyn and the people around him have finally understood the evils of antiSemitism and the importance of removing it from within our ranks.

Meet Labour’s bright new hope During the most painfully tough days yet for relations between Labour and the Jewish community and moderates and the hard left, the election of Miriam Mirwitch as the national chair of Young Labour has been a rare bright spot. The 24-year-old LSE graduate admits she’ was a “little shocked” to have triumphed following an exhaustive campaign, but she is no stranger to politics or to Labour – joining the party aged 16 at the end of the Gordon Brown era, as the Conservatives and Lib Dems went into coalition. “I started to notice the effects of austerity and cuts on my local community. I was a n g r y,” Mirwitch says. “I saw an

increase in homelessness, the effect on the NHS, and I wanted to get involved, especially when Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) was scrapped. I wanted to get out there and change things.” The Jewish Labour Movement member – awarded recently as activist of the year – describes herself as “proudly, visibly Jewish”. Softly-spoken, she says: “I get a lot of anti-Semitism online, sexism and abuse from the far-right, memes on eugenics and such. Some of it is because I’m Jewish. I don’t really talk about Israel online but a lot of trolls obsessively make up my views on Israel. I just don’t interact with them.” She prefers not to go into her views on Israel in detail (“I know the trolls will attack me”). But there is no avoiding the elephant in the room for Labour Jews amid continuing controversy over anti-Semitism in the party’s ranks. It comes in the week MP Chris Williamson, who has previously suggested that the many instances of antiSemitism in the party were “dirty lowdown tricks used for political ends”, appeared alongside Jackie Walker, who once said Jews were the chief

financiers of the slave trade. Williamson and his fellow travellers have made the case in the past year that anti-Semitism has been “weaponised” against Labour’s generally pro-Palestinian leadership. “It’s really offensive,” Mirwitch says. “You wouldn’t say any other form of oppression was being weaponised. It is right to call out prejudice, no matter what side of the political spectrum you find it on. Ee’re taking a harder line on anti-Semitism now and I think the last conference showed that.” So does this New West End Synagogue member think the party’s annual conference was a giant leap forward? If so, to what extent is this down to Jeremy Corbyn? “Jeremy has taken amazing steps forward with the Jewish community,” she says, presumably knowing that this is going to be a hard sell in light of this week’s demonstration of by the Jewish community outside Parliament. “Things like the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) motion on the way in which anti-Semitism and other forms of oppression are responded to by the Party, that went through at Conference and he supported it.” She notes Corbyn supported adop-

She says she wasn’t surprised. “I think he’s done really good work in the past year reaching out to the community but obviously we still need to do more. Jeremy’s supporting the JLM a lot more now. He even came to the Chanukah party.” Will Corbyn ever endear himself to a community overwhelmingly supportive of Israel? Will it ever be won over? “I think we will. I think we have been in a lot of areas… He’s been doing a lot of positive work,” Mirwitch says. What of her progress? Does she see herself as an MP? “I don’t know where my life will be in 10 years. And I wouldn’t want to be an MP for the sake of it.” But she is far from the only young Jewish woman making waves. “I’m really positive about how many fantastic young Jewish women there are in the party, like Rhea Wolfson, Izzy Lenga, Ella Rose, doing fantastic work. “That Young Labour elected a Jewish woman – who’s very visibly and proudly Jewish – as its leader, I think that says a lot about how far we’ve come.”

Two hurt in Golders crash Two men were taken to hospital yesterday after a car ploughed into a pharmacy. Passers-by said a silver car mounted the pavement in Golders Green Road, northwest London, which was packed with people doing their Passover shopping. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called to the scene at 11.46am and crews treated two people at the scene, before taking them to hospital. The Metropolitan Police said: “The two pedestrians – both men, aged 45 years and 80 years – were taken to a central London hospital. UK VOTES AGAINST UN ISRAEL AGENDA The UK has demanded an end to the UN Human Rights Council’s dedicated agenda item on Israeli actions in the West Bank as it warned “little had changed” in the year since it dramatically called out bias against the Jewish state. At the end of the council’s 37th session in Geneva, the UK mission to the UN voted against two of five resolutions targeting Israel including an ‘accountability’ motion urging an end to arms sales and one demanding a withdrawal from the Golan.

LABOUR CANDIDATE IS SUSPENDED Labour has suspended a prospective council candidate who called the Holocaust a ‘hoax’ and shared anti-Semitic posts online. The party acted against Alan Bull after the Twitter account ‘Labour Councillors Against Antisemitism’ highlighted a series of allegedly anti-Semitic posts he shared on social media. One post claims: “International Red Cross report confirms Holocaust of six million Jews is a hoax”, while another says Israel and Isis work together.

Coroner is accused of violating human rights A coroner was at London’s High Court on Tuesday for a legal challenge against her decision to adopt a “cab rank” queuing system for burials. Mary Hassell, senior coroner for inner north London, established a policy so that deaths in her jurisdiction are dealt with on a first-come, first-served basis. It says no death will be prioritised based on the religion of the deceased or their family by either the coroner or her officers. The policy is being challenged by religious groups who say it ignores “deeply-held beliefs” that require their dead to be buried as soon as possible. They argue Hassell’s stance is unlawful and breaches the Human Rights Act and the Equality Act. Lawyers told the court Hassell’s jurisdiction covers the boroughs of Camden, Islington, Hackney and Tower Hamlets, which between them have “sizeable” Jewish and Muslim minority populations. Sam Grodzinski QC, representing the Adath Yisroel Burial Society, told the court there was evidence

Bishop backs speedy burial A senior Christian leader this week backed Jewish and Muslim calls for Mary Hassell to fast-track the release of bodies for quicker burial for religious reasons when able. The intervention from the Bishop of Edmonton, Rt Revd Rob Wickham, came as judges determine the legality of policies from Hassell’s office. Ahead of the hearing, however, the Bishop of Edmonton appealed to Hassell to act in accordance with religious sensitivities. “The death of a loved one usually brings much grief and vulnerability for any family and community… “At these moments, it is of great comfort when people are able

Holocaust is subject for humour, insists Baddiel David Baddiel has defended a man who taught his pet pug to do a Nazi salute in response to the phrases “gas the Jews” and “Sieg Heil”. The Jewish comedian lent his support on the grounds of free speech to dog owner M a r k u s Meechan, who has been found guilty of religious and racial aggravation, after teaching the animal to give the

offensive gesture. Meechan is due to be sentenced next month. Speaking on the podcast Ricky Gervais is Deadly Sirius, which airs on SiriusXM, Baddiel said: “As far as I’m concerned, you can definitely do jokes about the Holocaust. You can do jokes about anything.” He continued: “It looks funny, it is funny” and urged Gervais to “Google it – it’s a hilarious picture.” He added: “The still of the dog getting his paw up…. pugs have got very short legs, that they find very difficult to balance on at the best of times. If they’re having to do a Nazi salute and think about the Holocaust at the same time, it must be really difficult”. Meechan was convicted of hate

crime in contravention of the Communications Act 2003. He filmed himself in 2016 training the pet to give salutes before putting the footage on YouTube and receiving three million views. COMMISSION BACKS JLC PROBE The Charity Commission has given the green light to the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC)’s investigation into its own conduct following allegations of financial impropriety by former chief executive Jeremy Newmark. The watchdog agreed to the JLC’s terms of reference for its independent review into the handling of Newmark’s 2013 resignation, which at the time was reported to be on the grounds of health. The organisation’s conduct in relation to whistleblowing claims of financial impropriety on the part of Newmark will be reviewed by a three-member

panel comprising retired judge Dawn Freedman, former KPMG vice-chairman Derek Zissman and charities lawyer Michael Scott. All three have confirmed they have no links to the JLC or Newmark. Their remit is to consider whether decisions made by the JLC’s trustees at the time were “reasonable” and “in the best interests of the JLC”. The panel has not been told to consider whether trustees should have referred the matter to the police.

WJR SHOWS UKRAINE PROJECTS British supporters of World Jewish Relief (WJR) have returned from east Ukraine, where the charity helps the country’s struggling Jewish community become financially selfsustaining. The 10-strong group visited Kryvyi Rih, a post-industrial town famous for its steel production, learning

about WJR’s Livelihoods programme, helping unemployed Jewish people find sustainable jobs to lift their families out of poverty. In nearby Dnipro, they met elderly Jews who come together every week as part of the Warm Homes programme and people with disabilities who WJR supports.

Doubts over Polish Shoah law The Polish attorney general’s office has described as partly unconstitutional a law passed last month that criminalises the blaming of Poland for Nazi crimes. Zbigniew

Ziobro’s non-binding opinion has no immediate legal consequences, but may be taken into account by the Constitutional Court in reviewing the law. The legislation, enacted earlier this month, imposes fines or up to three years in jail on anyone who ascribes “responsibility or co-responsibility to the Polish nation or state for crimes committed by

the German Third Reich”. President Andrzej Duda signed the legislation after it was passed overwhelmingly by both houses of the legislature. The attorney general’s office said penalising acts committed abroad independently of the laws in place there, was against the constitution, which opposes “excessive interference”.

It said the law was “dysfunctional” and could have “opposite results than those intended” and “undermine the Polish state’s authority.” The law’s passing prompted a crisis in Poland’s relations with Israel, the United States, and Ukraine. Critics include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called it “baseless”.

TV RELIGION ROW A Jewish television presenter was ordered to resign from her job after refusing to cross herself while on the air. Colombian Cathy Bekerman said Yamid Amat, newscast director of Channel 1 TV, “told me to cross myself... I did not do it and he asked me to resign at that moment”. The Confederation of

Jewish Communities of Colombia demanded a public apology from Amat “in light of his discriminatory and violative behaviour of freedom of religion guaranteed in the Colombian Constitution” . Amat later published an apology, which Bekerman, who is planning a return to TV work, was said to have accepted.

The Muslim teacher bridging the divide Stephen Oryszczuk meets Zain Hussain, an inspiring Muslim educator teaching Hebrew to Jewish youngsters at a Wimbledon shul Among the very few Hebrew teachers in the UK is one remarkable young man teaching Jewish youngsters at a Wimbledon cheder. Zain Hussain, 22, is studying for a masters in international politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies having earlier completed an undergraduate degree in Arabic and Hebrew, during which he spent half a year in Jerusalem and half a year in Jordan. Softly spoken, well-educated and interested in other cultures and religions aside from his own Muslim faith, Zain has now found himself teaching Hebrew to Jewish youngsters in the Wimbledon and District Synagogue on Sunday mornings. How on

earth did that come about? “I needed money,” he says, giggling. “A year abroad drains your bank balance! I knew the headteacher there so asked about part-time jobs. I went for the interview and got it. Lucky for me, there aren’t too many Hebrew teachers about!” Zain teaches two classes – one aged 8-9, the other aged 11-12 – but says no one knew he was Muslim “for a long while”. So, how did he ‘come out’? “I just told the older class ‘I’m Muslim.’ It came out in conversation, mind. I didn’t just decide to announce it one day.” He giggles. He giggles a lot. I imagine he’d be amazing with kids. So, how did they react? “They were shocked. Some of them

thought it was really funny and strange.” He laughs again, infectiously. “They asked understandable questions, like: ‘If you’re a Muslim, why are you here?’ But most didn’t find it negative, I don’t think. It was just… it was interesting. It wasn’t a problem. I don’t think anyone had any issues.” He continues: “It starts as ‘just a job,’ but I’ve grown into it. Me and my friend, who’s also a Hebrew teacher, we held an assembly recently. It was about identity and being a minority because as Muslims and Jews we’re minorities.” He asked the youngsters “which of you is the only Jewish person in the class? A lot talked about negative instances, anti-Semitism against them. I told them about Islamophobia, things that had happened to me and my family. They found it very interesting. We could advise them how to deal with situations. I just think conversations like that make students more interested”. He’s obviously got his teeth into it last year he organised the first interfaith exchange between his mosque, Minhaj ul Quran in Forest Gate, and the Cheder. It went well, he says, but this year’s will be better. Aged 22, he’s in a hurry. “The first Sunday they came from the cheder to the mosque. Both sets of students were about bar mitzvah age. They learnt a bit about Islam and discussed different Islamic themes such as peace and acceptance. The Jewish students gave a lot of their own input in terms of their religion and culture, so did the adults. Then we ate. “The next Sunday students came from the

mosque to the cheder. The rabbi spoke about the fundamentals of Judaism. The Muslim kids got to see some Torah scrolls. Then we had a workshop on Hebrew and Arabic calligraphy, how they share a history, and the students got to practice writing Arabic and Hebrew. Then we ate.” Overall the students enjoyed it, he says, but next time he wants to pack more into the day and “centre it on how, as Muslims and Jews, we can make society a better place, not just the theology aspect of it. The two religions have many similarities”.

Israel will echo with the sounds of silence A concert of music composed in concentration camps is to be held next month, writes Stephen Oryszczuk A unique concert in Jerusalem is to feature music rescued from the Nazi concentration camps for the first time in public. Italian composer professor Francesco Lotoro has made it his life’s work to track down and orchestrate the written and oral pieces composed by prisoners, salvaging 8,000 musical works from around the world over the past three decades. Among the pieces will be a melody taught by famous Jewish musician Ilse Weber to children at the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where she worked as a nurse. When Weber’s husband, Willi, was deported to Auschwitz in 1944, she voluntarily transferred to the

camp with their young son in an attempt to keep the family together, but both were killed upon arrival. The melody was never written down or recorded, but more than 70 years later, Aviva Bar-On, one of the Theresienstadt children Weber treated, will sing the piece from memory for the first time since the war. Other pieces include one by Willy Rosen and Max Ehrlich, deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz, where both were killed. Just before their transfer, they managed to smuggle a folder of their manuscripts out of the camp. Decades later, the folder was discovered in an attic in the Netherlands,

about to be thrown away. The various pieces, which will be performed in Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Czech and Romani, were composed by inmates of a number of camps, including Auschwitz, Theresienstadt and Westerbork. The concert, on 15 April, will be staged by Jewish charity JNF UK as part of Israel’s 70th birthday celebrations. It will feature the debut public recital of a selection of the rescued works, led by the Ashdod Symphony Orchestra. Children from two musical schools in southern Israel – many of whom lost relatives during the Holocaust – will also perform

Composer Francesco Lotoro has spent 30 years tracking down music rescued from Nazi camps

He added that through the concert “we are striving to both restore life

and dignity to these artists… and through the next generation of young musicians, look forward, with hope, to the future”. The concert will also symbolically fall on the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen. ISRAEL FAST-TRACKS US EMBASSY WORK Israel’s National Council for Planning and Construction will waive the usual rezoning approval and construction permits for the work in turning the US Consulate in Jerusalem into the American embassy. The council said it would authorise the waiver in order to allow the work to be completed before the planned 14 May move of the embassy from Tel Aviv. The move is timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding.

SETTLEMENT BUILDS UP BY 17 PERCENT West Bank settlement construction rose by 17 percent in 2017, with most of the new housing in isolated spots, according to Peace Now. In its annual settlement construction report released this week, Peace Now said that 2,783 new housing units began construction in the West Bank in 2017, approximately 17 percent higher than the yearly average rate since 2009. The report does not include housing construction across East Jerusalem.

Shoah survivor was ‘stabbed and burned’ Two suspects have been charged with the anti-Semitically motivated murder of an elderly Jewish woman. French Jewish group CRIF said 85-year-old Mireille Knoll was killed last week in Paris’ eastern 11th district. She had been stabbed several times and her apartment set on fire. In the summer of 1942, Knoll reportedly escaped the infamous round-up of 13,000 Jews in Paris, which included 4,000 children – with the cooperation of the French police – into the Vélodrome d’Hiver. stadium. Almost all these people were subsequently murdered at Auschwitz. Dutch Schindler who rescued children dies Johan van Hulst, a Dutch seminary leader who saved hundreds of Jewish children during the Holocaust and later became a senator, has died at the age of 107. Van Hulst was the director of a Protestant religious seminary

in Amsterdam which had a garden that bordered on the nursery of the Hollandsche Schouwburg. The Nazis and collaborators imprisoned Jews there before sending them on to concentration camps. Van Hulst and other resistance activists smuggled the children to safe houses over several months. He was recognised as a Righteous Among the Nations in 1973.

US senators urge Poland to amend restitution bill Mireille Knoll’s murder was described as anti-Semitic

measure from October that would require claimants to be citizens living in Poland and excludes all heirs except “first-line heirs” (spouses, children or grandchildren). “We are concerned [it] would discriminate against virtually all American survivors and heirs on the basis they are not currently citizens of Poland,” it says.

Leaders who lead Another week, another angry statement about Labour anti-Semitism written by despairing community leaders, impotent in the face of the party’s lacklustre attitude. Meanwhile, we are reduced to shouting at the TV news and talking around the dinner table about our fears being mocked and belittled. However, this week, the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council changed the narrative, in dramatic and unprecedented fashion. Within 48 hours, they came up with plans for Monday’s ‘Enough is enough’ rally, organised the logistics, encouraged thousands to attend (members of the Jewish community alongside MPs), and attracted wall-to-wall media coverage. None of this was easy or inevitable. They put aside the fact such action against an official Opposition was unprecedented and Jeremy Corbyn could yet be prime minister. The result was an awesome public display of community unity, making clear that Jews fearful about Labour are the mainstream majority, no matter how many tweets sent by their co-religionists who insist the issue is exaggerated. The events will make a difference where it counts most – the highest levels of the Labour Party. In response to the initiative of protest and publicity, Corbyn finally acknowledged that anti-Semitism cases have often not been dealt with quickly enough. These are all-important words that ought to have been said two years ago. Our community has gone further than ever before and has forced the Labour leader to go much further than he previously dared do. The sight of upwards of 2,000 people demonstrating against his party’s record on racism must surely have shaken a man who proudly talks of his mother taking to Cable Street to oppose anti-Semitism. The acid test will be whether he acts when the media glare subsides. And when he says there needs to be a greater understanding of anti-Semitism, is he ready to include himself him in that? Judging by his flat responses to our questions to him on Wednesday, we’re not hold out much hope. Another aspect of Monday’s demonstration giving hope to our community is the Board and JLC emphatically joining forces to pull off a devastating master stroke. It’s all too easy to knock those who choose to put their heads above the parapet and lead. This week, especially, let’s recognise what they do and loudly applaud it.

Creationists like to pretend that science supports them Amnon Goldberg is certainly persistent. He has written numerous letters to Jewish News promoting young earth creationism. His latest told us Professor Stephen Hawking preached “erroneous science” and had been suppressing “true scientific evidence for recent creation and a geocentric universe” (Jewish News, 22 March). Well, if only Mr Goldberg would tell us what this evidence is and how exactly Professor Hawking has erred, we’d love to know. As it is, I fear he actually has no scientific evidence but has only his belief in his interpretation of the Torah. He is, of course, perfectly entitled to his particular belief in the Torah, but he is not entitled to suggest that science supports it.

NO POINT MOANING IF YOU BACK THE PARTY

The fundamental problem for all creationists is that they cannot accept anything that conflicts with their view of the Bible. So they like to pretend that science supports them. At root, they put faith in a holy book higher than scientific statements. This is the case even though we know science to be far nearer to truth than biblical statements when considering how the natural world functions. Why can we believe this? Because science works. It has provided massive advances in human welfare over the past 300 years. It works. If science wasn’t truthful, it couldn’t work.

Will the time ever come when Jewish peers, politicians, councillors and donors who are members and supporters of the Labour Party recognise that tweeting and writing letters about how let down and annoyed you are is meaningless? Jeremy Corbyn is the leader of your party. As members and supporters of the party he leads, you advocate him governing our country. That is what you stand for.

THE RELIGION OF ATHEISM Fraser Michaelson implies that the “scientific community” would be “very interested” in seeing evidence of special creation, yet he falls into the trap of defending as “science” something that is better described as religion, specifically the religion of atheism (Jewish News, 22 March). To illustrate the point I am trying to communicate, consider “science” explaining the existence of a laptop computer without simply admitting that the laptop had at least one de-

signer and creator. In short, to deny intelligent design as being “unscientific” is itself unscientific, since it denies all the evidence. But Mr Michaelson asked for some evidence of Elohim having created the universe. Okay, on the macroscopic scale the Moon, and on the microscopic scale, DNA and RNA molecules.

Does the Labour Party’s wrath know no bounds? ALEX BRUMMER CITY EDITOR, DAILY MAIL

here is much both inspiring and discordant in the Haggadah. Nothing is more jarring than the incantation before the praise of the Hallel when the door is opened for Elijah and we implore God to “pour out his wrath upon the nations that do not recognise you… and destroy them from beneath the heavens”. Such sentiments are unfashionable in today’s politically correct world, and former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks notes that the prayer is “not a call for vengeance but a prayer for divine justice”. But in the run-up to Pesach this year there have been sharp remainders that descendants of Amalek may not have the message quite yet. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’s assertion in Jerusalem that some Muslin leaders are keeping shtum over anti-Semitism gained widespread traction. But it is no cause for surprise given the anti-Zionist and antiJewish vitriol that is currency across much of the Middle East, including in Palestinian textbooks. What most of us brought up believing

in the tolerance of Britain find more alarming are views in the political mainstream that echo those of the Middle Age when”pour out thy wrath” was added to the narrative of the Haggadah. Only under enormous pressure from the Jewish leadership and demonstrators at Westminster, including more than 30 MPs, has Jeremy Corbyn finally recognised antiSemitism in Labour. Previously he insisted he doesn’t have a racist bone in his body. Corbyn’s support and hospitality provided to his ‘friends’ in Hezbollah and Hamas are a case in point. In case the Labour leader hasn’t noticed, Hezbollah is building up missile sites in southern Lebanon and on the Syrian border targeting Israel. Having been party to the human rights assaults on the Syrian people perpetrated by autocrat President Bashar al-Assad, Hezbollah is battle hardened, has a good supply of weapons from its Iranian supporters and is ready to take the fight to Israel. As the BBC’s veteran world editor John Simpson observed in an essay on the Today show, the Hezbollah build-up threatens to become the next flashpoint in the Middle East. A Netanyahu government, on its back foot as

IT IS THE DOMESTIC VENOM INSIDE THE LABOUR PARTY THAT HAS BEEN HARDER TO TAKE a result of corruption allegations against the prime minister, might well be tempted into military action to take out the missiles in what could be yet another Middle East war. If Corbyn’s only flirtations with anti-Zionism were confined to the Middle East, they could at least be put down to geopolitics and world view of appeasing absolute rulers such as Vladimir Putin. But it is the domestic venom inside the Labour Party that has been harder to take. As the commentator Rod Liddle noted in The Sunday Times, Labour has shown “extraordinary tolerance to people who have said the most outrageously anti-Semitic remarks”. The party produced a whitewashed report into anti-Semitism and Corbyn, possibly

accidentally, found himself part of a Facebook group that accuses Jews of being in control of the media. The Labour leader’s latest offence was his support in 2012 for the graffiti artist Mear One, who produced a mural in Tower Hamlets showing a cabal of hooked nose money men playing monopoly on a table held up by naked sons of toil. Then mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, ordered it to be scrubbed clean. Even the most passionate believers in freedom of speech cannot believe that a mural, reminiscent of some of the worst tropes of the 1930s in Germany, is helpful in calming racial tensions in east London. Nor should it be endorsed in any way by the leader of major political party. Unfortunately, as Jews in Britain open the door to Elijah this year they might imagine the image of another bearded figure, wearing a Leninist-style hat peering in. For many Jews, loyal to Labour’s values of social tolerance and justice, the Corbyn leadership and the despicable views it fosters are deeply alienating. Fighting from inside is one answer but, as brave Liverpool MPs Luciana Berger and Louise Ellman have found to their costs, it is a deeply disturbing space.

love stories. They’re wonderful things, helping us navigate our way through life and deal with the challenges that it throws up. One of the most popular stories, well covered stories of recent years, is that Labour is an anti-Semitic party. Like all the best stories it started with small details of lowly Labour members who posted stupid things on Facebook. There was a dark guilt-by association sub-plot as prominent Labour figures were criticised for fleeting encounters with people who said offensive things. Recent days have seen the denouement of the story – the grand finale that we should have seen coming all long. It is no longer just that the leadership of the Labour Party has been soft on anti-Semitism – Jeremy Corbyn himself is, drumroll, an anti-Semite! Now the villain of the tale has finally been unmasked the coda is inevitable – Jeremy Corbyn will be forced out, the Blairites will return to great fanfare, and everyone will live

happily ever after in a centrist Eden. This story is now out of control. It is distorting, rather than helping us understand reality. We need to restore some perspective. The Labour Party has thousands of Jewish members, many Jewish councillors, a number of prominent Jewish MPs and several Jewish members of its ruling council. Many people at the heart of the Corbyn team, such as Jon Lansman, James Schneider and Rhea Wolfson are also Jewish. Ed Miliband, the previous party leader, was Jewish (and suffered anti-Semitism at the hands of the press and the Conservatives). I have been a member for five years and, as a Jew, have had only positive experiences. So what?, say those enraptured by the tale? That counts for nothing — the leader is an anti-Semite! Nonsense. Jeremy Corbyn has been MP for Islington North since 1983 – a constituency with a significant Jewish population. Given that he has regularly polled over 60 percent of the vote (73 percent in 2017) it seems likely that a sizeable number of Jewish constituents voted for him. As a constituency MP he regularly visited synagogues and

has appeared at many Jewish religious and cultural events. He is close friends with the leaders of the Jewish Socialist Group, from whom he has gained a rich knowledge of the history of the Jewish Labour Bund, and he has named the defeat of Mosley’s fascists at the Battle of Cable Street as a key historical moment for him. His 2017 Holocaust Memorial Day statement talked about Shmuel Zygielboym, the Polish Bund leader exiled to London who committed suicide in an attempt to awaken the world to the Nazi genocide. How many British politicians have that level of knowledge of modern Jewish history? There’s more. Jeremy Corbyn is one of the leading anti-racists in Parliament – I would go so far to say that he is one of the least racist

MPs we have. So naturally Corbyn signed numerous Early Day motions condemning anti-Semitism, years before he became leader and backed the campaign to stop neo-Nazis from meeting in Golders Green in 2015. There are many threats to Jews – and we are right to be vigilant. These threats come primarily from resurgent nationalism, antiimmigrant sentiment and a Brexit narrative that seeks to restore Britain to a mythical age of ethnic purity. The idea that Britain’s leading anti-racist politician is the key problem the Jewish community faces is an absurdity, a distraction, and a massive error. Worst of all, it’s a bad story that we’ve been telling for far too long. Let’s start to tell a better one.

Stand together to end the curse of loneliness BARONESS NEUBERGER SENIOR RABBI, WEST LONDON SYNAGOGUE

ast week, Reform Judaism hosted a conference entitled ‘Combating loneliness and isolation – all the lonely people, where do they all come from?’ It was held at my synagogue, West London, where we have been trying to deal with some of these issues for years. Everyone has seen the headlines screaming out data about loneliness in the UK, mostly, but not entirely, among older people. But action in response has been slow, and distressingly patchy. The Campaign to End Loneliness cites data showing that 17 percent of older people are in contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week and 11 percent are in contact less than once a month. It’s also the case that more than half (51 percent) of all people aged 75 and above live alone. They are not all lonely, but there’s an increasing likelihood they will become so as they get older. Two-fifths of all older people (about 3.9 million) say television is their main company,

THIS CONFERENCE MATTERS BECAUSE IF A COMMUNITY MEANS ANYTHING, IT MEANS GIVING AND RECEIVING SUPPORT while 59 percent of adults aged over 52 who report poor health say they feel lonely some of the time or often, compared to 21 percent who say they are in excellent health, and a higher percentage of women than men report feeling lonely some of the time. Loneliness also has serious health implications. Some suggest chronic loneliness is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. But whatever the data, the truth is huge numbers of people in our relatively wealthy, relatively comfortable society, are lonely, and we as a society have to do far more about it.

Reform Judaism has taken on this challenge with a major initiative, Communities that Care, offering training and support especially to smaller communities. Large communities, such as my own, already try to tackle it, with tea parties, telephone befriending and, particularly at this time of year, with phone calls in bad weather to check those living on their own are managing. Reform Judaism held a telethon during which some community members called others who might be isolated. This activity, along with the tea parties, has clearly been transformative in helping congregations shape care provision. What is a community for if it does not support the lonely and alone? Of course people come together to pray and to socialise, to study and to have fun. But some members become too old and frail to get to synagogue, and that’s where a virtual synagogue, with services livestreamed and regular befriending calls, makes the difference. We’re told that people really look forward to a call from a fellow member, and, indeed, a visit. Pesach parcels, Rosh Hashanah parcels,

the odd bunch of flowers, these are all excuses for a visit, a chat, and a chance to check all is well. For me, this is the main purpose of a strong religious community. It is living our principles and making sure our own members, and others beyond them, are cared for. Lifnei seivah takum, we are told in Leviticus – you shall stand up before the grey haired. But it’s not so much the standing that’s required these days; it’s the phoning, visiting, chatting, having a drink and – in bad weather or at particularly lonely times, such as around Christmas and New Year – just checking all is well. It is not hard to do some of this, but it does require organisation, commitment, and indeed a passionate belief that this is a mitzvah we cannot miss, for everyone’s sake. The more we can do it, the more it will become the norm. I’ll visit housebound people now. When I become housebound, the next generation will visit me. And so on. If a community means anything, it means mutual support – both giving and receiving. And that’s why this conference matters.

Single-handedly taking Pesach to the next level JENNI FRAZER

his column is being brought to you by the magic of technology. Since I have broken my arm, I am learning about a whole new world of the one-handed — and included in the things that I can do seems to be writing by voice recognition, although it is true that my computer is taking some time to get used to me. Meanwhile, out in the world of those with the requisite number of functioning limbs, things are going on much as usual. Pesach is approaching at a rate of knots and I have the impression that perhaps this year even more competitive trolley-bashing is taking place. Those accustomed to what might be called normal grocery shopping may be in for a certain amount of culture shock in the run-up to Pesach. For a start, we are all spending roughly three times as much as we might do in less frenzied weeks. This is because we are

I am at the I-have-no-idea-what-it-costs stage, although I do know that everything seems to be massively more expensive than during the rest of the year. I am also aware that there are food products which no-one in their right mind, with or without two working arms, could possibly want or need.

Nor do I understand items such as breakfast cereal that has been designated kosher for Pesach. If mama’s little darlings can’t manage without choco pops or fruity loops for a week, then these are truly FirstWorld problems. However, there is a certain unalloyed pleasure in doing any food shopping in kosher supermarkets. Of particular enjoyment are the customers whom you don’t know from a hole in the wall, but who make it their business to advise you on every item which you have so far purchased — or which they think you may be about to purchase. The air rings with gratuitous commentary on your basket containing some matzo meal and a packet of cream cheese. You won’t be entertaining then, says the man pushing past you. Another woman is equally dismissive of your brand choice. Her family, she says, always has the top-of-the-range oil or sauce — but she’s shopping for a seder of 58 people, so she is past caring.

It is a truth perhaps not universally acknowledged, but it should be, that the most competitive shopping interference can be found being carried out, on a daily, year-round basis, in Israel. I think my very worst experience was in a Jerusalem supermarket, where I found myself standing, dithering, in front of a display of cranberry juice drinks. A woman whom I did not know approached me suddenly. Was I, she enquired, going to buy the juice? And without giving me the chance to respond, she advised that there were only two uses for said substance. One is that you can drink it with vodka, she said. Or, she confided, in a voice loud enough to be heard in Tel Aviv, it was especially effective for treating intimate feminine conditions. Which was I planning? she asked. I beat a hasty and scarlet-faced retreat. By the time you read this, I can only hope that you should have finished shopping for the festival. Happy Pesach everyone.

Chicago...and all that jazz! Francine Wolfisz speaks to stage producer Barry Weissler, ahead of the revival of his smash hit show in the West End

f you’re a celebrity, you could be president of the United States; if you get enough publicity, you can make a fortune; and if you’re beautiful and rich enough – you can get away with murder,” laughs Barry Weissler. The Tony-Award winning stage producer is speaking about the hotly-anticipated return of Chicago, which opens in London in just under a fortnight and stars Cuba Gooding Jr in his West End debut. But, taken out of context, Weissler, who hails from New Jersey, might just as well be making a comment about the world as we see it today. “There’s no doubting the subject matter is very timely, especially with today’s #MeToo movement.

“The story was written originally in the 1930s, but it was always before its time. It could just as well be an immediate story of what is happening now.” Following its London debut in 1979, which ran for 600 performances, the razzmatazz-filled musical returned in 1997 to enthrall audiences for another 15 years – making it the West End’s longestrunning revival. It picked up six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy. Chicago was inspired by the captivating, real-life court trials in 1924 of two unrelated cases of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, who were both charged with murdering their lovers but later acquitted. In this fictionalised version of

events, femme fatale Roxie Hart (Sarah Soetaert) and cell-block rival Velma Kelly (Josefina Gabrielle) seek to defend themselves against their homicide charge with the help of smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn (Cuba Gooding Jr). For the roasted strawberries 450g strawberries – hulled and quartered 50g caster sugar

METHOD 1 Heat the cream and salt until hot. 2 Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick. Add the vanilla extract. 3 Slowly pour the cream mixture into the egg yolks, whisk gently to combine 4 Pour egg mixture into the saucepan and heat gently until it thickens

Mark Silver flies away to the Canary Islands and enjoys a carefree break at the Princesa Yaiza resort

t may have happened 21 years ago, but the memories still feel like yesterday. My then wife and I were dining in a very tasty Israeli restaurant in Gants Hill when suddenly there was a scream. Mrs Silver was pregnant, but still nine weeks short of the due date. Her waters had broken so we rushed to nearby King George Hospital and just two hours later Emily entered the world, weighing in at a mere 4lbs. Emily showed fighting spirit and was out of their special care unit within a fortnight. I recalled that dramatic time as I gazed in admiration at my daughter, all those years later. We did not have a care in the world as we sat by the pool in the magnificent surroundings of the Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort in Lanzarote. We were enjoying a short trip together just the two of us as part of her birthday celebrations, and I had chosen well. Situated in pleasant Playa Blanca on the south, it is about the best hotel on the island, and very popular among fellow Jewish travellers. The Brits, in general, love the Canary Islands

– especially in our winter months. Lanzarote is only 70 miles from the coast of Africa so, while it was freezing cold in London, we enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s during our stay in January. Not bad for a flight of under four hours. I was immediately impressed by the Princesa after we first set foot in the lobby area. The quality wooden decor is easy on the eye and I do like those check-ins, where you are escorted to a nice table and chairs, invited to sit down, and are greeted by a receptionist, as opposed to standing in some queue. The welcome glass of champagne did no harm either. Our walk to the room was impressive, as the corridors are extremely attractive with pastel-coloured window boxes. We changed quickly into our swimwear and headed out to the pool area. There are two giant open-air swimming pools, not to mention a large indoor one. Children were splashing about in miniature pools. The adjacent restaurant offered a varied menu and there was also a snack bar, which included freshly-made juices. Talking of food, there are no fewer than eight other restaurants, all of an excellent standard,

and we were lucky to experience four of them. If you enjoy Italian food, there are two fine choices, while the Asian venue is the scene for those memorable Teppanyaki evenings, where the chef shows off his skills right in front of you. But the signature restaurant, for me, was on a different level. I was keen to introduce Emily to a truly fine-dining experience and deliver another birthday treat. Her face dropped when she looked at the fancy menu but, after being guided through it, she too lapped up the gastronomic delights at Isla de Lobos. A stone’s throw away is the hotel’s own nightclub and we finished off the evening with a cocktail there, while listening to some proper music from a very talented singer/ guitarist – certainly not the normal loud noise you may expect at such a venue. I tried getting Emily on the dance floor, but her four-word response told me to sit straight back down: ‘’Don’t embarrass me, dad!’’ The next morning by the pool, as we reflected

on a memorable evening, things suddenly became even more memorable as I glanced to my right and noticed my old Hebrew teacher lazing on a sunbed with his wife. I hadn’t seen Mr Levy for nearly 40 years. He was now in his mid-80s and my magnificent reading of Hebrew clearly had not left its mark, as he did not remember me in the slightest, but was very polite over a five-minute chat. He and Mrs Levy often pop to Lanzarote for a break while also travelling to Israel twice a year. The Princesa does not especially cater for kosher guests, but can provide vegetarian options and offer a private room for a Shabbat service. At the time of year we travelled, it can get a bit chilly, so packing a jumper is advisable. We wanted to sit outside one evening and so I asked the bar waiter if there was a heater. Five minutes later, he turned up with two mojitos! That was an entertaining moment, but there is real entertainment throughout the day. We caught a couple of shows in the evening, including a talented female vocalist. For me, no relaxing break is complete without a good massage and the hotel’s spa is top notch, complete with an excellent thermal pool, sauna and steam room. Emily was completely relaxed following her 60-minute back massage after complaining to me that she was often achey from sitting at her computer for hours on end. Thanks to the Princesa, my first born departed with her batteries fully recharged and ready for that final push at university. And just like the hotel’s standards, Emily will be hoping for a degree that is first class...

BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN Pesach is a magical time. Family and friends gather to eat, talk, argue and sing together (in no particular order!). It is a festival whose laws, customs and unique traditions remain strong even in circles where other areas of observance has waned. Perhaps the secret of its endurance is that it connects generations with past, present and future in their own homes, rather than in the more formal arena of the synagogue. Pesach affords us the chance to explore ideas of freedom and slavery on a personal level, as well as on a national level. Mitzrayim, the Hebrew word for Egypt, is related to the word Meitzarim, or limitations. A slave has no sense of self and his whole identity is that he exists to serve his master’s bidding. The identity of the children of Israel was defined by others. The miracle of Pesach is that this nation was able to grab the opportunity to redefine themselves and break free from the oppressive voice of ‘You can’t’. They tap into their divinelygranted potential for greatness and rise to the challenge of accepting responsibly to be a positive force on the world stage. Seder night is an evening of contrasts – we ‘start with disgrace and end with praise’. The matzah starts off being referred to as the bread of affliction and morphs into the bread of freedom. These contrasts are an extremely powerful educational tool to bring home the message of Pesach; an understanding of slavery leads to a greater appreciation of liberty. We don’t dwell on the past, but receive direction from it. Wishing you a happy and kosher Pesach.

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Investigators in Germany revealed last week that they are looking into whether Stanislaw Chrzanowski, a UK citizen from Telford, committed war crimes during the Holocaust. So, what is the Torah’s view on this? Justice should be sans frontières and without a date limitation. In this country, there are statutory limitations on civil actions. However, for criminal acts nothing should lie un-investigated and unpunished. According to the Torah, the blood of innocents does not become neutral due to the passage of time. At the beginning of the world, God stated clearly to Cain, who murdered his brother Abel: “The blood of your brother is crying out to me from the ground”. For this reason, the murderer bore the “mark of Cain” upon his forehead. Even Moses, who took it into his own hands to kill an Egyptian beating an Israelite rather than put him through any due process, is said by our rabbis to have had “the face of a murderer,”

even though he had a lawful excuse to kill the Egyptian. Later in history, for many years, the blood of the priest Zachariah, son of Yehoyada, bubbled on the floor of the Temple where he was murdered. The Talmud relates that Nebuzaradan, the Commander-in-Chief of Nebuchadnezzar’s army, slew the

great and small Sanhedrins, the young priests and many school children, in an attempt to appease the blood of Zachariah on the Temple floor. The blood continued to bubble. Nebuzaradan cried out: “I have slain the best of them, would you that I slayed them all?” The blood ceased to seethe. The blood of our brother and sister victims of the Holocaust continues to bubble and seethe. Just as the terrible crimes never fade from the memory of survivors and their descendants, so the crimes committed never pass a limitation date. We should support Germany in her efforts to investigate Chrzanowski.

The Bible Says What? ‘The firstborn of Egypt must die’ RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD The Bible tells of 10 plagues that struck Egypt in the battle between God and Pharaoh, culminating with: “God smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt from the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the captive in the dungeon and all the firstborn of cattle….there was a great cry in Egypt for there was not a house where there was not one dead.” The Egyptians hurried the Israelites away, giving them all they asked for – jewellery, animals, clothing, gold, because “we are all dead”. One can only imagine the grief, terror and anguish of the Egyptians on that night, our “leil shimurim night of vigil”, now seder night. As we celebrate our liberation, we also observe the anniversary of these deaths, and on the seventh day of Pesach we recall the deaths of the Egyptian soldiers, drowned as the waters closed over them as they pursued the escaping Israelites. The Bible tells the stories un-

flinchingly, recording the screams of the people facing their dead at midnight, the fear and distress of the soldiers caught on the seabed as the waters roll back. It tells of the real human cost of our freedom. And Jewish tradition picks up this theme, so our observance of Pesach not only tells the story of the Israelites gaining freedom but also the story of grief and fear experienced by those cast as our enemies. The book of Proverbs tells us “when your enemy falls, do not rejoice”, and rabbinic tradition reminds us to lessen any joy gained at the expense of others. So we recite only half-hallel for the last six days of Pesach, we take out drops of wine at our seder while recounting the plagues, and remind ourselves that freedom comes at a cost we must never forget.  Sylvia Rothschild has been a community rabbi in south London for 30 years

Progressively Speaking Do Stephen Hawking ’s theories on the universe tally with Judaism? BY RABBI LEAH JORDAN Like most, I understand the theories of the universe the late Stephen Hawking pioneered through his own writings or those of other physicists who explain science to us lay people. But even from this vantage point, the awe Hawking brought to his explorations of time and space – and tales of his glee at everyday things like ice cream and silly jokes – inspired generations of people like me. Certainly Hawking inculcated in others Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s belief that “Wonder or radical amazement is the chief characteristic of the religious [person’s] attitude toward history and nature.” Many people before me have noted just how many Jews are in physics. Beyond the world’s most famous physicist – Albert Einstein, upon whose 1915 theory of general relativity Hawking based his theorem for the origin of time – the field is awash with members of the tribe. Cue the many theories for why this

Is there something to the number of Jewish physicists that points to Jewish thinking’s embrace of indeterminacy, something to which I can attest from battles with the Talmud over the complexity of Truth? Hawking famously identified as an atheist. “God is the name people give to the reason we are here,” he said. “But I think that reason is the laws of physics, rather than someone with whom one can have a personal relationship. An impersonal God.” But on the other hand, Hawking was also known to believe very deeply in what the Jewish tradition might identify as a Divine-inspired experience of wonder. “Mah gadlu ma’asecha, Adonai,” says the psalmist. “How great at Your works, Eternal / how profound Your designs.” Or as Hawking himself so memorably put it: “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”  Rabbi Leah Jordan is Liberal Judaism’s student chaplain

Identifying “at risk” individuals can prevent bowel cancers and any polyps can be removed by colonoscopy (a flexible telescopic examination of the bowel under sedation). The recommendation would be to have a colonoscopy five years before the age of cancer diagnosis. In your case, we would recommend a colonoscopy when you are 40, or if you were to develop symptoms such as a change in bowel habit, rectal bleeding, weight loss or tiredness from anaemia.

Sports enthusiast Karina Kaufmann says she can’t wait to represent GB again, having qualified for July’s World Duathlon Championships. Having represented her country at last year’s World Triathlon Championships, she said: “I’m incredibly excited to be chosen to represent GB again, especially as there were so many amazingly strong and talented women in the field. I felt so proud to be in my GB kit last year and can’t wait to get my race suit back on.” Aiming for a top-15 world placing,

though admitting it’s going to take a lot of planning and training, she said: “I’ll need to peak at the right time! Joe Hildebrand has said he may be tempted to return to the ring after his debut fight saw him raise more than £1,500 for Chai Cancer Care. Finishing in a 29-29 draw, he said: “When I look back at the video I’m really happy with how I did and really glad I took on the challenge. I was nervous in the days and hours leading up to the fight, but as soon as I walked to the

ring, my mood shifted and it just became something really exciting to go for.” Buoyed on by 30 family and friends, he said: “They were all great and I couldn’t have done it without them. I set out with a target of £1,000 and have now raised over £1,500 so I’m really pleased. Chai is such an incredible charity and I know the money will make a real difference. I’ve not made my mind up yet about a return to the ring.”
