News / Labour antisemitism / Hunt at CFI NEWS IN BRIEF
‘SHOAH REVISIONISM STILL IN THE PARTY’ Labour MP John Mann has warned that Holocaust revisionism remains a problem in the party. He told a Holocaust Memorial Day debate in Parliament: “It is a problem all over Europe. It’s a problem in my political party. It’s a problem in this country. It’s a problem that we are not facing up to sufficiently robustly or successfully.” Mann has been a frequent critic of Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour leadership’s handling of the antisemitism crisis in the party.
THORNBERRY URGES AN SRAEL ARMS BAN Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry has urged the Foreign Office to threaten Israel with an arms sales ban and an end to joint military exercises if it continues airstrikes in Syria against Iran. She told Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt the UK should protest “in the strongest terms – including at the UN – if Israel engages in airstrikes over Iraqi soil, in breach of international law”. Thornberry also urged Hunt “to confirm that the threat of an arms sales ban should also be on the table.
MPs’ deadline for Labour to answer 11 key questions Labour MPs are pushing for a deadline to be set for Labour’s leadership to disclose how many outstanding cases of antisemitism need to be investigated and how many members are awaiting training on Jew-hatred, writes Justin Cohen. These questions are among 11 put forward in a motion set to be debated at a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party next Monday, with MPs warning the party it risks seeming to be institutionally antisemitic if urgent action is not taken against hate. The motion, proposed by Catherine McKinnell and seconded by Ruth Smeeth, comes amid anger over the party’s approach to disciplinary cases and the speedy lifting of suspensions of at least three members in recent days. Among them was former MP Jim Sheridan, who said he no longer respected the Jewish
community because of their work with “Blairite plotters”. He apologised and his suspension was lifted last week, but at the same time he claimed his accusers had “over-reacted”. Welsh Assembly member Jenny Rathbone was also readmitted after a two-month suspension for suggesting the security concerns of Jewish worshippers at a heavilyguarded Cardiff synagogue could be “in their own heads”. Noting Jeremy Corbyn’s apology 10 months ago for the pain caused by antisemitism within his own party and General Secretary’s pledge to introduce new procedures to tackle the issue , the motion said: “In the months that have followed the PLP (Parliamentary Labour Party) is dismayed that there remains such a backlog of antisemitism cases that are still to be investigated and a decision reached – in particular the high-profile

cases that it was promised would be concluded by July 2018. The PLP is concerned by reports that a number of cases of alleged antisemitism activity from high-profile members have been dropped. “The PLP calls on the party leadership to adequately tackle cases of antisemitism, as a failure to do so seriously risks antisemitism in the party appearing normalised and the party seeming to be institutionally antisemitic.” The motion calls for a report by the leadership to be delivered to the PLP meeting the following week providing answers to questions including how many antisemitism complaints have been received and how many times the general secretary and officers of the party’s governing body have ensured no further action is taken. The proposers also ask how many staff are investi-
gating complaints, how much has been spent on legal fees to pursue cases, which organisations have been commissioned to provide antisemitism training and what is the timescales for responding to antisemitism complaints. The motion also demands to know which Jewish community organisations have been consulted on the antisemitism code of practice. After it is debated next week, a simple majority will be enough to carry the motion by a show of hands. Only if a majority call for a secret ballot will it be held the following day. Jewish leaders have criticised Labour for readmitting three members accused of antisemitism “without so much as a slap on the wrist”.It follows the party’s
UK’s ‘black moment’ Jeremy Hunt has described Britain’s 1939 white paper capping immigration to Palestine as a “black moment” in history, in what is believed to be the first such remarks by a British foreign secretary, writes Justin Cohen. The Secretary of State made the comments in his first address to Conservative Friends of Israel since succeeding Boris Johnson, before rushing back to the Commons for key votes on Brexit. Hunt hailed the “on the whole strong relationship” between Britain and Israel that started with the Balfour Declaration, but in a stark moment of candour said there had been “black moments” including the white paper, which limited the number of
Jewish immigrants to Palestine to 75,000 for five years during the Jewish world’s darkest hour. He said “there have been some black moments when we have done the wrong thing such as the 1939 White Paper which capped the number of visas issued to Jews wanting to go to the British mandate of Palestine.” Only last week, at an event when the foreign secretary unveiled a statue of British Holocaust hero Frank Foley, Israel’s Ambassador Mark Regev had recalled how his aunt had been denied a visa as a result of the white paper. Hunt told the audience in Parliament that he would never forget honouring the wartime hero, adding “if we don’t learn

lessons history will judge us to very poorly indeed”. In his speech, Hunt pledged that Israel’s right to defend itself was “absolutely unconditional”. But he made no direct reference to a call from his opposite number Emily Thornberry to halt arms sales if the Jewish state expands its operations against Iranian targets from Syria to Iraq. He described the Jewish state as the only nation surrounded by countries dedicated to its “total destruction”. While stressing the government’s commitment to a twostate solution, he insisted disagreements with Jerusalem came “from the vantage point of friends”. Just days after it was revealed the principles of a post-Brexit trade deal with Israel were in place, he also hailed bilateral “mushrooming trade”. And on a night when Brexit was never far from guests’ minds – with the various votes broadcast in the room – he joked that Israel provided “Inspiration to see how you’ve thrived despite the challenges on the borders”. Among the other speakers were chairs Stephen Crabb and Lord Pickles.

News / Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 NEWS IN BRIEF
#FIRSTSURVIVOR PLEA CONTRIBUTORS SHARE HOLOCAUST MEMORIES Twitter users responding to a rabbi’s appeal have taken to social media to mark Holocaust Memorial Day by sharing their first memories of meeting Shoah survivors. Rabbi Zvi Solomons asked people to share under the hashtag #FirstSurvivor. Judy Stone, a Forbes contributor and clinical researcher, who tweeted: “My mother (at first) didn’t want her grandchildren to know her so it wouldn’t hurt so much when she died. She really started loving life when she hit 90. My daughter sang For Good to her at a pageant and her funeral.” World Jewish Relief president and UK National Holocaust Centre Henry Grunwald chairman said: “My father, Eugen, arrived in the UK from Czechoslovakia on 4/8/39. He was lucky. He had a work permit. Almost all of his large family were murdered in the death camps.” Another contributor was David Pinto-Duschinsky, Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Hendon, who added: “My #FirstSurvivor was my father. Smuggled out of the Munkacs ghetto as a baby and hidden in an orphanage for deaf and blind children in Budapest. Most of the rest of the family perished. Brought to this country after the war as a child refugee.”
‘Even today, the battle goes on’ Senior politicians and community leaders have joined 200 survivors of the Holocaust and genocides to honour the millions of people who were murdered. At a national memorial service in Westminster, Britain’s Jewish community was assured it was an “intrinsic part of what makes Britain great”. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust chair Laura Marks told guests trustees had been questioned over recent months
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis
about whether the guest list was “appropriate” given the reported prevalence of antisemitism within mainstream politics. She said: “We know through independent studies that people who attend Holocaust Memorial Day events learn more, empathise more deeply and go on to do more to build a better future.” Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn arrived 20 minutes before the service and was seen chatting and taking photos with guests. He said afterwards he found the ceremony “deeply moving”, calling it “a powerful reminder of why we must stand against racism and oppression everywhere”. Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said he was “deeply” troubled by the prevalence of modern-day prejudice. “We still imagine that these barbarities belongs in the history books,” he said. “Yet today, 74 years since the Nazi death camps were liberated, antisemitism is on the rise, here and abroad, and Jewish communities are once again living in fear. “I want to reassure our Jewish com-

munity that you are an intrinsic part of what makes Britain great, and the government will always stand by you to challenge bigotry and intolerance and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that future generations never forget where hatred can lead.” Ahead of the ceremony, special envoy for post-Holocaust issues Lord Eric Pickles – who is also co-chair of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation advisory board – told survivors at a reception that “democracy is the best bastion against tyranny”. He said: “The battle of the Holocaust continues to this day. There are serious
numbers of people who want to pretend it didn’t exist. There are serious numbers of people that want to lie about the Holocaust. And we are here to counter that with truth.” TV actors Nina Sosanya and Sanjeev Bhaskar gave readings during the service, which was interspersed with poignant short films from survivors and musical tributes. Also among the dignitaries present were London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Home Secretary Sajid Javid, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who also gave an address.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 / News
Survey: 1 in 20 are Holocaust deniers One in 20 adults in the UK do not believe the Holocaust happened, while one in 16 feel it has been exaggerated, a jaw-dropping new survey claimed this week. The poll, commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), asked more than 2,000 Brits about the world’s worst genocide – and their level of knowledge has shocked educators. Five percent fell into the ‘Holocaust denial’ category, while eight percent said it had been exaggerated, demonstrating how antisemitic conspiracy theories perpetuated online have filtered into the general psyche. “Such widespread ignorance and even denial is shocking,” said HMDT chief executive Olivia MarksWoldman. “Without a basic understanding of this recent history, we are in danger of failing to learn where a lack of respect for difference and hostility to others can ultimately lead… We cannot be complacent.” Among the less cynical, almost two thirds either did not know how

FACEBOOK’S TRIBUTE Yad Vashem teamed up with Facebook’s Israeli branch to help social media users to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. The project saw online users randomly matched to one of the 4,800,000 names recorded in Yad Vashem’s central database of Shoah victims. The users’ names, together with the names of the Holocaust victims they are matched with, are then added to Yad Vashem’s virtual “I Remember
Wall“, which can be shared on the users’ Facebook pages. Facebook Israel country director Adi Soffer Teeni said: “As we commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we dedicate ourselves to turning personal memory into a collective one. “Through the use of technology, we can each connect with the name and the story of one victim of the Shoah.”
MP REGRET OVER RIDLEY Labour MP Liz Twist says she regrets the distress she caused by taking part in a Holocaust Memorial Day event with a notorious anti-Israel activist. She was at the University College Union in Newcastle event with Yvonne Ridley, who has accused Israel of exploiting the Holocaust and described the country as a “festering pustule”. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust chief executive Olivia Marks-Woldman said

many Jews were murdered or else grossly underestimated the number. One in five thought fewer than two million had died. “I find these figures terribly worrying,” said Steven Frank, a Holocaust educator and one of only 93 children who survived Theresienstadt. “The only way to fight this kind of denial and antisemitism is with
the truth. I tell people what I experienced. If we ignore the past, I fear history will repeat itself.” It was not all bad news – 84 percent said it was important to know about the Holocaust so we can learn the lessons from it, 76 percent felt more Holocaust education was needed and 25 percent felt it could never happen again.

“it is an abuse of Holocaust Memorial Day to cause distress and offence to Holocaust survivors and to members of the Jewish community, to use it as an opportunity to whitewash previous promotion of, or tolerance of, antisemitism and Holocaust distortion.” Twist told Jewish News she agreed with Marks-Woldman’s comments, adding: “It was clearly a mistake on my part.”

Lord Dubs has urged the government to take in more refugees from Syria and elsewhere, saying “There are children who need safety.” Corbyn faced criticism for tweeting the video, with many reminding the Labour leader that he had consorted with Holocaust deniers and antisemites.

News / Holocaust Memorial Day 2019
50,000 learn Holocaust lesson Schoolchildren across the world have been urged to use the words of a Holocaust survivor as a “weapon” against hate in a live webcast. TV judge Rob Rinder introduced Harry Spiro as one of a “dwindling number” of people who are still around to bear first-hand witness to the atrocities in the Second World War. Spiro, 89, told children hate “will not solve anything”, as he shared how he survived Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany after being rounded up from Piotrkow, in Poland, as a young boy. Rinder urged an estimated 50,000 students watching the webcast, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust, to use Spiro’s story as a “weapon” against prejudice. He told history students gathered
at Stoke Newington School, in north London: “More than ever today, as we all know, you will listen, you will see, you will hear and experience some of the appalling hate on Twitter. “Some of you in your own lives may even experience forms of prejudice in a variety of different guises, be it sexism, Islamophobia, antisemitism – whatever it is. “This is our chance collectively to listen to Harry’s words and to become empowered. What Harry’s going to be giving us today are facts, a story we can use as weapons, as an important example against hate.” Spiro, whose entire family were murdered, came to the UK in 1945 following the Government’s decision to allow 1,000 Holocaust survivors to settle in the country. Rinder’s grandfather, Morris
Malinicky, was part of the same group, known as ‘The Boys’ and was a friend of Spiro’s. Asked why he continues to share his testimony, Spiro said: “After all what I went through, yes I lost everything… students don’t understand when I say to them ‘no, I do not hate the Germans’. I don’t hate any nations to the extent to kill them. Yes, it was a terrible thing what they did to me personally, but by hating, no, you will not solve anything. “Because over centuries people were killing each other, hating each other and look where we finished up. “But now what I see about the young generation – they take notice, they do learn… maybe, eventually, we will succeed and overcome this terrible hatred. What motivates me is by seeing what is happening now.
Holocaust survivor Harry Spiro speaks out ‘as an example against hate’
Nations are still ... hating each other, killing each other, and I think ‘wait a minute what are you doing?’.” Students from around 1,300
schools and organisations across the world – including in Portugal, Italy, Holland, the US and Malaysia – tuned in to hear Spiro speak.
HMD event at Downing Street TWITTER HELPS TO REMEMBER Jewish civil servants held the first Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) commemorative event for staff at Number 10 Downing Street. Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill spoke at the get-
together as attendees heard testimonies from a Holocaust survivor and Eric Eugene Murangwa, a former international footballer who survived genocide in Rwanda. HMD commemoration
across government departments has been growing in recent years, with coordination efforts led by policy official Michael Livingston, a Scottish Jew, while he was at the Home Office.
Organisations in the US and Europe helped the World Jewish Congress promote its #WeRemember campaign to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day. In New York, social media
giant Twitter got involved by hosting an event and designing a unique emoji for the campaign, while in Brussels, NATO headquarters also helped share the message. Now in its third year, the

Amnesty calls on travel sites to avoid West Bank UK Jewish leaders this week condemned Amnesty International after it published a report urging online travel sites to ban listings from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The Board of Deputies of British Jews and Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) issued a joint statement, saying the rights group “has a long record of double standards on Israel”. Titled Destination: Occupation, Amnesty’s report said rental sites Airbnb, Booking. com, Expedia and TripAdvisor are driving tourism to settlements that most of the world considers illegal. Airbnb announced last November it would remove West Bank settlement listings, but has yet to implement its decision. The company says it is working to identify the “precise boundaries” of areas subject to the policy. Amnesty called on Airbnb to

immediately implement its ban and to extend it to east Jerusalem, which Israel captured with the West Bank in the 1967 Six-Day War. On Twitter, Israeli cabinet minister Gilad Erdan called the Amnesty statement “an outrageous attempt to distort facts, deny Jewish heritage & delegitimize Israel”.
The Palestinians seek these lands for a future independent state. This comes after Amnesty International UK refused to host a JLC event last January, on the grounds the human rights group is “campaigning for a ban on Israeli settlement goods”. The discussion at Amnesty’s
offices on the United Nations Human Rights Council’s relationship with Israel was cancelled, causing anger from British Jews. The Board and JLC issued a joint statement condemning the report, saying: “Amnesty International has a long record of double standards on Israel. We will not forget how Amnesty recently left Jews out of its work on racism and refused to allow the JLC to host an event at its offices. No surprise then, that they now see Jewish access to Judaism’s holiest site, the Western Wall as a reason to criticise Israel.” Paul Charney, chairman of the Zionist Federation, said: “This report once again shows Amnesty International’s lack of neutrality when it comes to Israelis and Palestinians, by whitewashing any culpability the Palestinian leadership and perpetrators of terrorism have with regards to the conflict.”
Teenage girl found dead in Manchester The body of a 16-year-old girl, reportedly a member of the Charedi community, was discovered hanged in a derelict building in Manchester on Monday. Police said the teenager – reported as Sarah Goldman, a pupil at Yavneh Girls, on the King David High School campus in Crumpsall – was reported missing from her
home in Prestwich at around 9.30am and discovered 20 minutes later in an empty building in Salford by a family member. The school said in a statement: “Sarah was a lovely, bright, intelligent and wellmannered pupil and she will be hugely missed by everyone.” The exact cause of death is yet to be established.
ATTACKS IN BARNET UP BY 54 PERCENT The number of antisemitic incidents in Barnet shot up by 54 percent last year, the Mayor of London’s Office has reported this week. Incidents logged in the borough, which has a large Jewish population, went from 126 in 2017 to 194 last year, an increase of 54 percent, prompting London politicians to urge the government to restore the police funding that was cut during austerity.
The number of incidents recorded by police had been on track to compare similarly to 2017 until a sudden surge in September, with double the number of antisemitic crimes committed in October compared to August. London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore said the figures showed the need for Jewish security groups, adding that feelings around Israel and Palestine were contributing factors.

If someone has a blood cancer, such as leukaemia, then the only chance of saving their life could be a stem cell transplant. But those stem cells have to come from someone with a matching tissue type, which, if you are Jewish, is far more likely to be from someone who is also Jewish. How do you know if you are a match? With a simple swab of your cheek, your saliva can be analysed, and your tissue type recorded on the national register. Anybody who needs a match has their tissue type compared with all those on the registries around the world.
There’s a slim chance you’ll match someone (4-5% over 10 years) but if you do, you could be the one person who can save that person’s life. Then, 90% of people donate through their bloodstream over an afternoon.

News / Ofsted dispute / Volunteer awards / Health survey / Book award
Orthodox educators accuse Ofsted of ‘obsessive attacks’ Committee (PAC) last Wednesday. In a letter to PAC chair Meg Hillier MP, he said Spielman had an “ill-informed view that the pupils at our school continued to fail to receive a rich education,” which he described as “absurd and quite frankly, false”. In 2006, the school was graded “outstanding” and in 2014 it was listed as “good” but after a damning inspection in March last year it was categorised as “inadequate”, despite high grades in English and maths. At the time, Bibelman publicly railed against a “secularist plot” after inspectors admonished the school for not teaching the girls “key information” such as the basics of reproduction in science lessons. Inspectors also said the school’s Ofsted’s Amanda Spielman
The chair of governors at one of Stamford Hill’s largest Orthodox schools has accused the Chief Inspector of Ofsted of “obsessive persistent attacks” against the community, after she said his school provided girls with an “extremely limited education”. Theo Bibelman of Yesodey H a t o r a h Senior Girls’ School criticised Ofsted head Amanda Spielman after her comments during a meeting of the Public Accounts

“leaders do not prepare pupils well for life in British society”, adding that the redaction of books such as Sherlock Holmes and Elizabethan England was “detrimental to learning… pupils do not have equal opportunities for learning compared to pupils elsewhere”. They were particularly scathing about the school’s redaction of helpline numbers, saying this “prevents pupils protecting themselves, because they are unable to seek independent, confidential advice if required”. Spielman told the PAC the school censored texts that would be “absolutely normal for a teenager to see in any book available in this country”, but Bibelman accused the chief inspector of singling out Yesodey Hatorah. “That Ms Spielman chose to name our school without prompt… speaks volumes and indeed confirms many, if not all our concerns,” he said. “What is beyond our comprehension is why Ms Spielman felt it

appropriate to name our school specifically and yet refuse to disclose the name of any other religious school for fear of breaching confidentiality.” He added: “Ms Spielman’s obsessive and persistent attacks on the Orthodox Jewish community are a testimony to the inflexible and uncompromising attitude of Ofsted and the body’s total lack of understanding of the basic tenets that uphold our culture and community.”
• Faith leaders are being encouraged to convert more of their schools to academies. Education Secretary Damian Hinds this week told representatives from all major faiths that becoming an academy would see them join hundreds of schools benefiting from higher standards. More than a quarter of statefunded faith schools already have academy status with more academies due to be launched.

VISITING THE HIDDEN CORNERS OF ISRAEL
Young Jewish volunteers will be able to achieve national awards specific to the Jewish community, after a funding boost led to a major reform programme. Supporters behind the Westminster launch last week said the new awards would be “age-progressive, faith-sensitive versions of nationally
recognised volunteering awards in Jewish secondary schools” and “specifically tailored to the needs of Jewish young people”. The announcement came during a meeting of 150 people including heads of charity, teachers, rabbis, youth development workers, civil servants, national awards representa-
tives and donors from Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG). During the event organised by Jewish youth development charity Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (JLGB), attendees heard how GPG money will help pay for a mobile app and digital platform to help streamline and coordinate Jewish youth volunteering.
CHAREDI HEALTH SURVEY DOUBTS A leading Orthodox rabbi has cast doubt on whether a Hackney-wide health survey will meet the needs of Stamford Hill’s Charedi community, writes Mathilde Frot. The East London council has announced researchers will carry out a door-to-door survey of residents in the borough over the age of 16
between February and March. Questions will include levels of physical activity, diet, smoking and drinking habits, mental health, general well-being and awareness of public health services. Rabbi Avroham Pinter, chairman of the Charedi Health Forum, told Jewish News: “I do not think it’s
going to be particularly effective with the Charedi community. “It’s also the wording of it and some of the issues raised are not going to be particularly Charedi-friendly. “Some of the issues being covered are not prevalent in the Charedi community, such as alcoholism.”

An Oxford don’s biography of the young Dutch Jewish girl his grandparents saved from the Nazis has won the Costa Book of the Year Award. Professor Bart van Es bagged £30,000 for The Cut Out Girl, after judges praised the “sensational and gripping” account of Lien de Jong, whose mother
gave her to an unknown family working secretly in the Dutch resistance in August 1942. De Jong’s parents were both taken to Auschwitz hours later, where they were killed, but Lien – then aged eight – survived, after the underground network smuggled her out of The Hague, then under
Nazi occupation. She was one of 4,000 Dutch Jewish children smuggled out by the resistance families, of which the author’s was one. The judges’ panel, chaired by BBC News journalist Sophie Raworth, described the book as “the hidden gem of the year”.

he leading lights of Russianspeaking Jewry have said a new Holocaust memorial and learning centre will be built at Babi Yar in the capital Kiev, and will open 82 years after the Nazis massacred 33,771 Jews there over a single weekend. It follows an exhibition at the House of Commons on Monday, hosted by MP Mike Freer, in which the project’s backers said 10 architects were currently vying to win the design competition, but warned that some Ukrainian politicians remained wary. Prisoners, nationalists, communists and Roma were also killed at the site, and authorities have until now committed only to discreet memorials for each group, but those behind the project say a new centre is important, not least because the Soviets tried to “erase the memory of the Holocaust both ideologically and physically”. Speaking to Jewish News, former Israeli minister and ex-Jewish Agency chief Natan Sharansky said: “They tried everything to raze it from the memory in Soviet times. They even tried to build a stadium on it.” Born in Ukraine, Sharansky was a wellknown human rights activist and refusenik in the Soviet Union, after being denied a visa to Israel in 1973, and spent nine years in prison, often in solitary confinement. He said he first sought to travel to Babi Yar in the 1970s. “First I tried [to go] for the anniversary [of the massacre] in 1976. I was a dissident activist in Moscow and was invited, but we were arrested on the train. That was my first attempt.” Sharansky said the site was “always a big symbol, always very emotional, very important for our struggle for remembering”, and recalled reading the famous 1961 poem about Babi Yar by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, written in part to protest the Soviet decision not to recognise it as a Holocaust site. “I was a young boy,” said the now 71-year old. “Suddenly here was somebody speaking about it openly. It gave such a pride. This was when we had the ‘Khrushchev thaw’. It lasted 24 hours. Then they started a big campaign against Yevtushenko. That was the end of the thaw, the end of a relatively short period of free speech.” Sharansky finally managed to visit with an Israeli delegation in 1997, a site many Jewish Ukrainians feel so powerfully about, and in 2015 he was asked to become chairman of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre, which he accepted.
“We want not only to commemorate, but to collect Holocaust documents, with so many disappearing, and we want it to be an educational centre for schoolchildren to come, like they do for the Holocaust Museum in Washington or Yad Vashem. “There’s nothing like that in Ukraine, Russia, practically nowhere in Eastern Europe. Hundreds of thousands of people disappeared, and that’s it? Today, people say it can never happen again. Look how easily it happened with educated people.” He says Kiev’s mayor – former heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko – is a big supporter, who gifted the land to the foundation during his first days in office, but other politicians are lukewarm. “There are mixed feelings, because we are going to bring back the truth, including the truth about collaborations,” Sharansky says. “Recently in the parliament, some said [the new centre] is a Russian provocation, asking why these Russians like [Mikhail] Fridman and [German] Khan are giving money to it. “I had to remind them that these so-called Russians have six, eight, 10 relatives lying dead there. It’s nothing to do with the [Ukraine-Russia] conflict.” I ask him whether their fellow Ukrainian Jewish philanthropist, Viktor Pinchuk, whom I saw earlier at the Commons exhibition, had also lost relatives there. As I do, Pinchuk walks past. Sharansky grabs him, and tells me jokingly: “Here, you can ask him!” I do. “Yes, it’s true for me, too,” he says. “Relatives, friends, neighbours of my parents, all died there, so it’s personal for me, but also it’s a responsibility we have. To prove we’re really European; as Ukrainians, we have to tell the truth.” Then he jokes with Sharansky, saying: “I hope it will still be a big prize to be European!” Does Pinchuk think the centre will happen – that it will get built? “It’s real. It’s happening. This week [there is an] architecture competition, 10 designs. Can you imagine? It’s not just blah blah blah. We’re here. We donors spent millions of dollars each on this project in the past two and a half years. Believe me, it’s real.” Editorial comment, page 18 The exhibition opens at JW3 on 4 February, facilitated by the Genesis Philanthropy Group

Jamie’s getting pita the action in Israel
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was spotted in Tel Aviv this week, tucking into Israeli cuisine for what’s rumoured to be his latest TV show. The Naked Chef was welcomed by Sultana vegan restaurant on Ibn Gabirol Street, where he sampled a vegan schwarma on Tuesday. Posting a picture of the smiling 43-year-old on its Facebook page, Sultana restaurant wrote: “Yes, the rumours are true. Chef Jamie Oliver has visited us for a TV show that will be aired later this year. He was charming
Jamie with Nurit Goren and at the Sultana restaurant
and enjoyed the schwarma and the atmosphere, and that’s just about all we can say for the time being.” Nurit Goren, who runs tours in Carmel Market, was lucky enough to meet Oliver in person and have a quick photo taken with him, during a visit to nearby Julie, which specialises in Egyptian cuisine. They spent a “wonderful five minutes together,” Goren
told Times Of Israel. “It was literally the fulfillment of a dream,” said Goren. “I’ve been watching his cooking shows since I remember, since I was a little girl.” Jamie has also been spotted tasting vegetablefilled street food at the Panda Pita pop-up stall, as well as Venezuelan fayre at Arepita’s Town.
BBC TO CELEBRATE JEWISH WONDERS The BBC is to shine a light on Judaism as part of ‘Year of Beliefs’, a series of programmes examining faith in modern Britain across TV, radio and online, writes Mathilde Frot. As part of its programming, the three-part series Earth’s Sacred Wonders on BBC One will take viewers to Masada in Israel, the site of one of the oldest synagogues on earth. In Male Circumcision on BBC One, the journalist Adnan Sarwar (pictured) will explore issues around male circumcision. Big Questions on BBC1 will feature daytime debates pertinent to the Jewish community, but more details have not yet been confirmed. The series Year of Beliefs seeks to explore faith and belief “at a time when society is more diverse, more complex and more divided than ever before”, according to the BBC. As part of the new programme series, the BBC has also commissioned a new
survey of attitudes to some of the most pressing ethical dilemmas of our time according to age, gender and geographical region. The public broadcaster says it will mark Rosh Hashanah and other nonChristian festivals in the next year to run alongside its Christian programming, which the BBC says is “the cornerstone” of its output during Easter and Christmas. Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, said: “With the new Year of Beliefs series we want to capture the complex variety of faiths and beliefs in modern Britain.”

Malaysia loses top event for Israel ban Malaysia has been stripped by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) of the right to host a major international swimming competition after the country refused to allow Israeli athletes to compete. Athletes from around the globe had joined politicians including Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson in expressing concern over the prospect of the World Para Swimming Championships going ahead in Kuching this summer without guarantees that the Israelis would be treated equally. But after a meeting in London on Sunday, the governing board of the IPC decided to remove the event from Malaysia, saying guarantees had not been offered by the country’s home ministry over visas or the use of anthems and flags. IPC president Andrew Parsons said:

Election 2019 / Israel decides
To Bibi or not to Bibi? That i
Israel’s next election is due to be held on 9 April. Analysts think Benjamin Netanyahu will: a) be indicted at some point this year, b) still win the vote, c) be unable to command a majority when the indictment is announced or d) refuse to step down when it is. This could mean another election shortly afterwards. In any case, here’s the who’s who...
HAYEMIN HAHADASH (New Right) The new right-wing party formed by Education Minister Naftali Bennett and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, formerly of religious-nationalist party Jewish Home, represents the religious and secular ultra-nationalists. The pair have just brought in some big name American Jews, including journalist Caroline Glick, so will continue to gain more media limelight than their polling justifies. Predicted 8-10 seats YISRAEL BEITENU (Our Home) Led by former Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, this struggling right-wing party won six seats in 2015, similar to previous years. Its base is Russian-speaking Israelis and its modus operandi is to sound a bit more hawkish than the hawks. The loss of Orly Levy-Abekasis, who left to set up her own party (Gesher), appears to be a deep and self-inflicted wound. Predicted 4-6 seats LABOR Israel’s leading centre-left party has lurched to the right and seen its base dwindle. While it had 24 seats in 2015, when it was part of the Zionist Union with Tzipi Livni, most think it will halve in size this spring. Former leader Isaac Herzog never captured voters’ hearts, but new leader Avi Gabbay hasn’t even captured his party’s – three talented Labor MKs left last week (one saying Labor had

“stopped talking about peace”) while another heckled him at the party conference, calling him a “liar”. To be fair, the heckler had a point – Gabbay absented himself from Labor’s Chanukah do, saying he was “sick,” but was later pictured fit and well, holding meetings in the Gulf. Predicted 8-16 seats.
elected to the Knesset as a member of Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu. She left two years ago, after he snubbed her for a ministerial job. An independent-minded centrist campaigning on a popular social policy platform, she’s one to watch – her father, David Levy, became Israeli Foreign Minister, so it’s in the blood. Predicted 4-8 seats
YESH ATID (There is a Future) After its stunning political debut in 2013, winning 19 seats, the centrist party of former TV presenter Yair Lapid dropped to 11 seats last time. Since then, Lapid has been a fierce Netanyahu critic while still sounding hawkish in key areas. His focus remains socio-economic, while his call to end Charedi Jews’ military exemption is still resonant. If Likud finally loses power (unlikely), Yesh Atid will be in the mix. Predicted 13-15 seats.
HOSEN YISRAEL (Israel Resilience) This year’s big news story is the new party of ex-IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, quickly dismissed as a “hologram” by Yair Lapid. Gantz, who has also teamed up with former Chief of Staff and Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon, was also attacked as “a leftie” by right-wingers this month, after saying he’d amend the controversial Nation State Law, which critics say treats nonJews as second-class citizens. Gantz knows the sacrifices Druze Israeli soldiers make, so he probably takes the law personally. All signs suggest he will be a power-broker, and there’s already talk of backroom deals. Predicted 14-16 seats.
KULANU (All of Us) Centrist and focused on economic issues, the party led by Moshe Kahlon won 10 seats at the last election and joined the coalition, but the honeymoon is over, and one of the party’s biggest names – former Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren – is now leaving. Predicted 4-6 seats. GESHER (Bridge) Founded by Orly Levy-Abekasis, the daughter of former Foreign Minister David Levy who became a TV and fashion star before being

LIKUD (Consolidation) The right-wing party may get more than twice as many seats as its nearest rival and continue to control a quarter of the Knesset. But a recent Channel 10 poll showed the public torn on their preferred prime minister – 41 percent said Benjamin Netanyahu, 38 percent said General Benny Gantz. If that translates into votes on party lines, Likud could slip, and if the Attorney General rules on Bibi’s indictment before the polls open, it gets very interesting. Not that it isn’t already: the judge overseeing the election has just told Likud to stop blocking a law extending propaganda restrictions to online content. Predicted 30-33 seats.
MERETZ (Vigour) Stalwart of old-school left-wing liberal values and champion of green issues, its critics have long predicted the party will fold, saying you cannot be both Zionist and left-wing because the two are “contradictory”. Yet here we are in 2019 and the party is still there, fighting the good fight. Predicted 4-5 seats. ISRAEL-ARAB PARTIES At the last election, Joint List won 13 seats, but Knesset Member Ahmed Tibi is now withdrawing his Ta’al faction (Arab Movement for Change) to run independently. Both Joint List and Ta’al are predicted 6-7 seats. CHAREDI PARTIES United Torah Judaism won six seats at the last election, but is expected to grow slightly now that Agudath Yisrael (a Chasidic party) and Degel HaTorah (whose roots are among the more strict Lithuanian orthodox) have said they are on board. Shas, until now the biggest Orthodox party with seven seats at the last election, may slip a little. The two parties are expected to win 12-13 seats, as their demographic only grows.
NO SEAT WONDERS? MAGEN YISRAEL (Shield) The new party launched by former IDF Brigadier-General Gal Hirsh in January. Most feel he would be best joining Gantz. HABAYIT HAYEHUDI (Jewish Home) Formerly led by Naftali Bennett, last time it won eight seats and joined the coalition. But Bennett and his number two, Shaked – both opposed to a Palestinian state – left to set up their own party, followed by most donors. The party will probably crash. HATNUAH (Movement) Led by ex-Israeli Foreign Minister and twostate supporter Livni, the party was in the Zionist Union with Israel’s Labor, but in a bizarre conference in December, Labor’s Avi Gabbay ditched her on live TV – sitting next to him, she hadn’t been told. In a put-down, she later told the press: “The days when you proved you were a man by humiliating women are over.” Livni remains a draw for some, so expect her to pop up as someone’s running mate, but for her party to fold. ZEHUT (Identity) Led by veteran right-wing agitator Moshe Feiglin, it favours annexing the West Bank, paying Palestinians to leave and promising citizenship to those who “prove” they want to be Israeli. He also wants to legalise cannabis and abolish the Chief Rabbinate’s monopoly on Jewish life-cycle events and kashrut. TKUMA (Resurrection) An extreme right party led by fanatical settler Bezalel Smotrich, who seeks Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank. Once arrested in connection with violent protests, he opposes construction permits for Palestinians, wants to legalise illegal settler outposts, supports segregation in hospital, says Palestinian stonethrowers should be shot, and thinks LGBT Jews control the media.

A crucial archive We commend those creating the first Holocaust memorial and learning centre in any Russian-speaking land, details of which were brought to the UK this week in a showcase exhibition at the House of Commons. The site in question is Babi Yar, near the Ukrainian capital Kiev, (or Kyiv) and supporters made the point in London that while the US, Israel and much of Europe takes Holocaust commemoration seriously, some states in the former Soviet Union are still in the old mindset, turning a blind eye. Ukrainian schoolchildren learn ad hoc about the Babi Yar massacre, where Nazis shot dead more than 33,000 of the city’s Jews in one weekend, but their learning is neither deep nor systematic. In short, a memorial and learning centre that jointly acts as an archive is much needed. The money is there. The Kiev mayor has already given the land. Architects are already designing. Yet there may be obstacles. No national politician has yet stood in the way, but the content has not yet been decided. Expect problems if it addresses complicity. The time is now for Ukrainians to be as brave, tell their truth about the Holocaust, and show they are European in both value and deed.

YES, WE CAN COUNT ON BRAVE RACHEL Regarding the article “Riley reveals her personal fight against antisemitism”, (Jewish News 17 January), Rachel Riley should be congratulated on her efforts to combat abhorrent behaviour. Antisemites generally are enjoying the life of Riley at present, freely spouting their cruel, racist remarks on social media and other forms of communication. Yes, some of the politicians are eventually sanctioned, but this is often mild and hardly acts as a deterrent. Most just carry on poisoning society with their invective and, as in this case, seek to paint those like Ms Riley as perpetrators rather than victims. In particular, she has been accused of being a bully who is spreading smears. When it comes to antisemitism, an appropriate “smear test” definition is “any demonisation of, prejudice against and hostility to Jews and the state of Israel which merely seeks to spread the cancer of antisemitism”. Ms Riley is using her status to counter such accusations publicly and campaign against this racism. J D Milaric By email

Hadassah sets example I have an addition to your recent coverage of the example set by hospitals in the field of co-existence, Hadassah Mount Scopus and Wolfson Hospital in Holon being the ones quoted. My daughter is an ICU nurse in the Carmel Hospital in Haifa. When we visited to celebrate the BeneMitzvot of our grandchildren, we were introduced to both Arab and
Jewish doctors and nurses who work together in amity towards their aim of caring for all regardless of faith or ethnicity. On one occasion, our daughter received an urgent call from the hospital to help free up a bed to accommodate a patient from Gaza in need of intensive care.
NETTA BRINGS JOY TO US ALL
Can there be anything and anyone more abhorrent, disgusting and hypocritical than Jeremy Corbyn being pictured signing the Holocaust Memorial book? This is the man who, as reported in Jewish News, laid a wreath near terrorists who butchered Israeli Olympic athletes yet now cries crocodile tears for the slaughter of six million Jews on one particular day of the year. Let no one think the Jewish community and wider “decent” public haven’t seen through this sham of a stage-managed propaganda stunt.
Thanks should go out to all right-thinking people who champion Netta Barzilai. Having won the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, she is leaving happy smiling faces everywhere she performs and her forthcoming appearance at Carnegie Hall in March will no doubt be very special – hopefully recorded for all to enjoy. This appreciation of Netta does not of course include those who wish to interrupt her performances with their antisemitic anti-Israel slogans, insulting one of Israel’s best cultural exports to date. It is beholden to the Israeli organisers of this year’s Eurovision contest to ensure the event is truly spectacular and presents visually both Tel Aviv and Israel in general as the beautiful and democratic nation that it is.

CORBYN’S SICKENING STUNT
I WAS BARRED FROM EXHIBIT I applied for a ticket to the event at the Eton Road mosque (Jewish News 24 January) as my knowledge of the Holocaust in Albania is minimal. When I arrived, at the venue I was told my name was not on the list. I asked why and was told it could be an administrative error. I asked for more information and was told it was unavailable. I said I am Jewish and all were invited, but this fell on deaf ears. I explained my reasons for being there and pointed out that the title of the exhibition was ‘Love Your Neighbour’. Apparently they did not
love me. I was upset at being turned away. Maybe my mistake was saying I’m a Zionist. It seemed the community in Redbridge was told not to say why I was denied entry. Certainly there were other Jews admitted but not me. This exhibition was sponsored by Yad Vashem. I explained my family perished in the Holocaust, but that too fell on deaf ears. Even when I needed the toilet, I was refused entry to the building.

THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERS May I take one small issue with Leonie Lewis’s piece on 24 January about her 12-year legacy working for the Jewish Volunteer Network. It’s not only charities benefiting from skilled volunteers but also schools and private enterprise. The Baby Boom generation brings relevant skills that would be wasteful to discard. I like to think that in some small measure, I have made a contribution to my non-charitable organisation
as a volunteer. I’m certain there are many charities and volunteers who owe Ms Lewis a tremendous debt of gratitude for arranging many successful “marriages” and on their behalf may we wish her a fulfilling retirement. If she’s looking for work, The London School of Jewish Studies Library would be happy to have her services!

No more ‘apologies’ – back under your rocks JENNI FRAZER
I
have reached the stage where every time I even so much as see a picture of the Labour leader, I am obliged hurriedly to turn the page. For me, Jeremy Corbyn has become the equivalent of an extremely treife recipe in a cookery book: Nothing to see here, move on. And yet, with Holocaust Memorial Day this week, I felt constrained to stop and examine Corbyn’s latest pronouncement, to sieve it for something heartfelt and genuine. It can’t be the case that throughout his long years in Parliament Jeremy Corbyn has never actually come face-to-face with a Holocaust survivor. And he knows — or his advisers must — that to some extent he is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. He has to make a statement about Holocaust Memorial Day, because that’s what responsible political leaders do. But oh, Lord, the mealy-mouthedness of it. He tweeted a picture of himself signing the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment. He wrote: “In memory of the millions of Jewish people, and others, who
perished in the Holocaust. Let us never allow antisemitism or any other form of racism to disfigure our society.” “And others”…. “or any other form of racism”. It’s as though he can’t bear to ascribe a uniqueness to the tragedy of the Shoah. Well, in fact, of course, Corbyn can’t, and that’s because in 2011 he and the man who is now Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, put their names to an Early Day Motion that called for Holocaust Memorial Day to be renamed “Genocide Memorial Day – Never Again For Anyone”. The pair made their suggestion on no less a day than HMD itself. These days, Corbyn is obliged to give lipservice to condemning antisemitism, but – as with most of his pronouncements – it has a hollow ring. It is said that fish smells from the head, so we should not be surprised at the week’s other two cynical developments, the actions of Derby MP Chris Williamson and the former Labour MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, Jim Sheridan. I can actually feel my lip curling when I consider these two beauties. Williamson, Corbyn’s standard-bearer for smears, seems to make an art form of chal-
❝
I DON’T WANT CREATURES SUCH AS THIS WRAPPING THEMSELVES IN THE FLAG OF HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY TO AVOID BEING IDENTIFIED FOR WHAT THEY ARE lenging claims of antisemitism. So for him to hype his own signing of the Book of Commitment is the outside of enough. The Jewish Leadership Council’s Jonathan Goldstein, demonstrating admirable restraint in my view, told Williamson exactly how it is: “No-one in the Jewish community is fooled by those who try to whitewash their own prejudices by using HMD as their smokescreen. You cannot be opposed to antisemitism while simultaneously promoting antisemites”. And so we come to Jim Sheridan, reinstated to full Labour membership after a complaint against him for declaring his “loss of respect and empathy” for the Jewish community over the ongoing antisemitism furore. Sheridan not only declared himself
“delighted” at his reinstatement, but had the gall to repeat his view that “my accusers were misguided and overreacted to what was intended to highlight my personal frustration and criticism of those intent on undermining our leadership in Scotland and the UK”. Just in case we had missed the point, he added: “I would also like to reiterate my sincere apologies to the Jewish community whose historic struggle I have supported all my political life.” You know what, Jim? I don’t want your slimy apologies. And I don’t want creatures such as Williamson and Corbyn wrapping themselves in the flag of HMD to avoid being identified for what they are. was privileged to be a part of the Ben Azzai Programme back in 2017, which provided the chance to visit Tzedek’s poverty relief work in Tamale, Ghana. While on the trip, we met so many inspiring people and learnt about sustainable international development work. We were introduced to inspirational local people who volunteer their time to help those more disadvantaged than themselves. For example, a nurse who, while working six long days a week, also set up a blood drive and mentors 25 victims of unsafe abortion: 22 are now back in school. We met youth leaders who encourage younger children to stay in education so their lives will be improved in the long run. It was absolutely fascinating to hear from a local tribe chief about the huge impact of Tzedek’s Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) project. It costs very little to start up and is run by the women in each village. This project is an excellent example of a sustainable development project, since it requires no further

Countdown to hatred? Not on Rachel’s watch RICHARD FERRER EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS
R
emember when Rachel Riley was just the lovely numbers lady on Countdown who only set social media alight when she spelt out something rude? (Longwinky, anyone? Classic telly). Well, her Longwinky days are over. In recent weeks Rachel has been promoted from teatime times table expert to flag bearer in the bitter fight against ministates. Sorry, I jumbled my letters, I meant antisemites. With a surname like Riley, Rachel really didn’t need to put her head above the parapet and risk her career and possible safety. Her ‘Jewreka!’ moment arrived after seeing last year’s unprecedented Westminster protest against Labour Jew hate and ‘Israel is a racist endeavour’ posters appear across London. “Knowing how decimating the Holocaust was in the years preceding Israel’s inception I found this description of Israel’s existence deeply offensive,” she says. Like Neo popping the red pill, there was
no going back. Rachel began wearing her religion on her sleeve, loudly identifying as Jewish and calling out Jeremy Corbyn’s indulgence of antisemitism. Few high-profile Jews use their public platform to bravely speak about what really matters. Claudia Winkleman mostly tweets about yoga, food and shoes. But for Rachel, the new Jewish Queen Boudica, there was no conundrum. “They picked the wrong woman,” she said last week. “Whatever they throw at me, I’ll throw right back.” Nothing energises the infantile indignation of Jezza trolls like a celebrity pointing out Dear Leader’s obsessive, antisemitism enabling anti-Zionism. So out came the heavy artillery. Rachel was a “hypocrite, a lying propagandist, fascist, right-wing extremist, Nazi sympathiser, a Twitter cancer, hate preacher, conspiracy theorist, thick Tory” and a “titsteeth-and-arse clothes horse dolly bird”, which adds misogyny into the mix but wins points for originality from Dictionary Corner. “It’s got to the point where I can’t look at my Twitter feed,” Rachel says. “It’s a constant stream.”
❝
FEW HIGH-PROFILE JEWS USE THEIR PUBLIC PLATFORM TO SPEAK OUT Welcome to the s*** show, Rach! Us mere Jewish mortals have been wading through this fetid swamp ever since Corbyn was elected. Research shows trolls are at their most trollish between 2am and 3am. By happy chance, most don’t have to get up for work. Rachel eloquently returned fire last week with a powerful and deeply personal speech for Sunday’s Holocaust Memorial Day, reflecting on her first visit to Auschwitz and how “you need to know nothing to propagate Jew-hate but everything to combat it”. Her words will be read and reflected on by approximately zero Corbynistas. She’s got her work cut out. Research this month by the Community Security Trust
shows “Holocaust hoax” Google searches are 30 percent above average on Holocaust Memorial Day each year. And a survey this week by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust found five percent of Brits fall into the ‘Holocaust denial’ category, while eight percent think the Nazi genocide has been exaggerated. This politicised blurring of history is commonplace. When did you last hear someone deny the Battle of the Somme or England winning the World Cup? You don’t, because anyone spouting such baloney would be considered a cuckoo conspiracy theorist who also thinks Charles killed Diana and Paul McCartney died before the release of Abbey Road (although that one might be true – have you heard Mull of Kintyre?). Yet Rachel’s Twitter timeline has become a free-for-all for flat-earthers hell-bent on rewriting history. Tellingly, there was a colossal 80 percent rise in this garbage last April, when Corbyn held talks with Jewish groups. This is the twilight zone into which Rachel has entered. She’s certainly up to the job. Her courage and strength must now inspire others to follow her lead.
British Jews are living in the new Anatevka MARK LEWIS
MEDIA LAWYER AND ACTIVIST
A
ged eight, I watched Fiddler on the Roof and was horrified when the cossacks stormed through Motel and Tzeitel’s wedding. I cried as the Jews of Anatevka fled the pogroms of Czarist Russia. My family had fled the east a century earlier owing to antisemitism, but that was the old days, when my great-grandfather’s father had worn a large yarmulke and spoke Yiddish. We spoke English, went to English schools, supported England at sport and were loyal to the Queen. When I was five, a Roman Catholic school teacher intervened in a squabble between me and her son, calling out, “It’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish you all off.” Only 27 years had passed since the end of the Second World War. There were odd episodes of antisemitism – a swastika painted on my garage door by the far-right National Front, verbal abuse by Pakistani teens who yelled “death to Yahud [Arabic for ‘Jews’]” as I entered synagogue and the odd barbed comment from teachers
and pupils – but we were British Jews and beat off such occurrences. There were many more episodes of grassroots antisemitism; In this politically incorrect era, antisemitism was accepted. As teens, we campaigned for the release of Soviet Jewry so refuseniks could flee to Israel. “Anatoly” Sharansky needed Israel, while I merely needed it to be there, just in case – but Britain hadn’t killed Jews for 800 years. I can’t put my finger on when leftist antisemitism emerged as a force of Jew-hatred on par with far-right and Islamic antisemitism. Initially, Labour was good for the Jews. It stood up for the underdog. But the perception of Jews as the underdog changed as that of Israel as the underdog changed. Its successful rescue mission in Entebbe and the election of the first Likud prime minister conveyed to many the image of a tougher Jewish state. British Jews were now seen as the capitalist oppressors, with dual loyalties. A change in the Labour Party’s electoral system led to Jeremy Corbyn’s election, and the explosion of social media brought on
❝
CORBYN MOVED THE ROCK AND THE HATERS HAVE CRAWLED OUT the widespread dissemination of Nazi-era antisemitic propaganda reminiscent of Goebbels. Attempts to challenge Jew-hatred were dismissed as smears. The relatively few complaints that were upheld led to a revolving door of suspensions so those expelled were soon brought back on board. Worse, this brand of antisemitism was mainstream in the Labour Party membership and reflected Corbyn’s leadership. Corbyn will tell you “there is not an antisemitic bone in [his] body,” and that he is “against all racism”. Yet there are still daily revelations of antisemitism and the abusers torment those who speak out, including television presenter Rachel Riley and actor Stephen Fry.
And support for Labour grows when the opposite should be expected. Nearly 40 percent of voters continue to support the party that admits to its antisemitism problem. Many in the British Jewish community say they will leave if Corbyn becomes prime minister. It is too late. He has moved the rock and the antisemites have crawled out. They are not going back. I’m sure there are those who think my pessimism premature, but why wait? There may not be pogroms, but life will be uncomfortable for Jews. No shechita (animal welfare grounds), no brit milah until 18 (let the child decide), no dual nationality, no visits from Israelis (belligerent). Britain is the new Anatevka. It’s time to wander. Only this time there is somewhere to go. Mark will speak on 10 February in Tel Aviv at British Antisemitism – It’s Personal: In Politics, On Campus, In Media. Tickets: ukantisemitism. eventbrite.com

Are you getting the Holocaust compensation you deserve? Deborah Cicurel speaks to lawyer Brian Kramer about helping survivors and their families claim benefits from Germany and Poland
I
f you, your late spouse or parents are survivors of Nazi atrocities, you could be entitled to compensation, even if you or they received some form of compensation in the past. Brian Kramer, P.A., based in Boca Raton, Florida, is one of the leading law firms in the country dedicated to obtaining reparations for Holocaust survivors and their families, whether they are now making claims for the first time, have been previously denied or have already obtained some compensation. “I have a passion for justice, and while true justice is unattainable given what survivors and their families endured, every pension obtained, or property restituted is just one way to ensure that subsequent generations do not forget the injustices of the past”, says lawyer Brian Kramer. This is not solely a financial issue it is largely one of morality. “I help Holocaust survivors and their heirs to obtain pensions, retroactive lump-sum payments and the restitution/compensation of stolen property. Kramer reports many survivors were never clear if they were eligible and therefore haven’t pursued all claims, or because new laws have been passed which entitle many people to new or additional benefits. “The key thing is that I help heirs too, who often don’t know there’s a potential entitlement for them, and so it’s really about getting the word out and telling them there is potentially money out there,” Kramer says. “Many survivors and heirs think ‘oh yes, my mother or my grandmother got money from Germany’, but even if they got something, it doesn’t preclude them from receiving a lunp sum, because the survivors often didn’t receive their full entitlement.” Kramer says many claimants might be nervous to try to claim more from the German government, but the reality is that he has helped hundreds of survivors receive additional money. “Many survivors (even those now deceased), who worked in one or more ghettos during the

war are are entitled to specific benefits from Germany. This is particularly relevant to British Jewry and, among those of Hungarian, Romanian, Czech and Slovak descent, because the laws expanding eligibility to such ghettos was only recently expanded.” This is because the “acceptable” list of ghettos has been expanded to include survivors (or their heirs), who were interned in ghettos across occupied and annexed German territories, including Shanghai and Transnistria, even for a short time. He adds: “I often encounter children of survivors, who were unaware that their parents worked in a ghetto” or sometimes the survivors themselves not have realized that where they were during the war is now classified or recognized as a Ghetto for restitution purposes. Not all ghettos looked like Warsaw or Lodz – “thousands more across Europe were without the stereotypical walls.” The bottom line, says Kramer, is that all European Holocaust survivors born before 1935 (or their heirs) should call and enquire about potential German benefits and all Polish-born survivors (regardless of age) should call and enquire about both Polish and German entitlements. In short, if your parent was a Holocaust survivor, who died in the past 10 to 15 years, you should call Kramer to enquire about potential benefits. In order to make a claim, you might think a victim would have had to be in a concentration camp, but Kramer says that is not true. Also, recently amended Polish laws enable many survivors who were born in pre-war Poland or even in Siberia to collect a quarterly pension. Kramer feels strongly that if you are entitled to anything, even a nominal amount, you should take it. For example, he says, the new Polish pension “is not a lot of money, but if it is something that you are entitled to, you should take it.” Kramer says, “it’s your right. And, if you don’t want it, give it to tzedakah.” He notes, since not all benefits are retroactive, as each month passes money which belongs to Holocaust survivors is being lost. It is also worth adding that despite good intentions, many people claiming to help survivors apply for benefits lack the experience and knowledge to get the job done properly. For example, with respect to Polish pensions an
improperly completed application could be denied or never even receive a response. Kramer noted that he had many clients advised to contact him (by word of mouth), to appeal a prior denial or to find out why they are not receiving a response. Kramer has successfully appealed many cases using information, archives and resources that may be unknown to others. “Having been to Poland multiple times and spoken to the clerks and ministers who process these claims, his office is very conscious of how to best prepare an application.” Finally, Kramer urges anyone who thinks they are the heir to property stolen or confiscated by the Nazis or Communist regimes in Poland to contact him ASAP. There are real deadlines approaching, which must be considered, particularly people with potential claims to properties in Warsaw. Kramer urges anyone who may be entitled to compensation to call him and find out. “I’ll do a free case evaluation and give them my opinion on whether I believe there’s anything additional for them to pursue. “I don’t charge for that. I do the research and spend my time so there’s no investment on their part.”

Our Jewish odyssey There have been many histories of the Jewish people, but few histories of Judaism itself. Now in his fascinating new study, A History of Judaism, Martin Goodman looks at how the oldest of the three Abrahamic religions came to be, as well as its longevity. In this extract, the author – who is professor of Jewish Studies at Oxford – looks at how Judaism’s ‘uniformity’ in practice and belief paved the way for variety and diversity.
‘O
n the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, as well as a thick cloud on the mountain, and a blast of a trumpet so loud that all the people who were in the camp trembled. Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God… As the blast of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses would speak and God would answer him in thunder... This dramatic account of the divine revelation to Moses on Mount Sinai is preserved in the biblical book of Exodus. The history of Judaism comprises the continued and varied history of interpretation of this covenant by this ‘holy nation’ over some three millennia. Over a thousand years after Moses is believed to have been vouchsafed, this revelation, the Jerusalem priest and historian
Josephus inserted the earliest surviving theology of Judaism composed for a non-Jewish readership into his book Against Apion, a defence of Jewish traditions against the calumnies of gentile authors. Josephus ascribed to Moses the creation of a new and perfect constitution for humankind, asserting that this constitution was so different from all others known in his time, such as monarchy, democracy and oligarchy, that it could properly be encapsulated only by inventing a new term in Greek, theokratia, ‘theocracy’, because Moses had insisted that God should be in charge of everything… Views about Moses among the non-Jews for whom Josephus wrote his theology were markedly less enthusiastic. That he was regarded by the Jews as their legislator was widely

known among both Greeks and Romans, and in the late fourth century BCE, Hecataeus of Abdera considered him ‘outstanding both for his wisdom and for his courage’. But others attacked him as a charlatan and impostor – Josephus’ contemporary, Quintilian, a Roman expert on rhetoric, could even use Moses as an example of
the way that “founders of cities are detested for concentrating on a race which is a curse to others” without even needing to name the person he called ‘“the founder of the Jewish superstition”. The more outsiders attacked Judaism, the more a pious Jew like Josephus would claim the excellence of his tradition, which has ‘made God governor of the universe’… The contrast to other peoples was also what led Josephus to his assertion that, because all Jews are taught the laws that govern their way of life, so that “we have them, as it were, engraved on our souls”, they therefore agree in everything to do with their religion: … “Among us alone one will hear no contradictory statements about God, such as is common among
others…Nor will one see any difference in our living habits: we all share common practices, and all make the same affirmation about God, in harmony with the law, that he watches over everything.” As will become apparent…the ‘unity’ and ‘uniformity’ in practice and belief that distinguished Jews from Greeks and other polytheists in the ancient world, with their multitude of deities, cults, myths and customs, left plenty of room for variety and diversity within Judaism, not only then but throughout its history.” A History of Judaism by Martin Goodman is published by Penguin, priced £12.99 (paperback). All Belge and waffles!
Lucy Daltroff explores the vibrant Belgian region of Wallonia, discovers a medieval spa town and samples famous Liège waffles
F
rom roller-skating accordion players to poetic contortionists, a camel, and puppets carefully crafted from pieces of leather, the streets are alive in Namur. This is the capital of Wallonia, the French speaking and largest part of Belgium – and I am amazed it is not better known as a tourist destination. Admittedly, I am here for an annual street art festival bringing colour to this historic and vibrant city. As lunchtime approaches, I spot characterful restaurants with large outside courtyards, full of tables where animated conversations and excellent food are on offer, before venturing along the narrow pedestrianised streets filled with enticing cake and chocolate shops at every turn. Yet it is not chocolate, but the citadel that is the city’s most prominent asset – once one of Europe’s mightiest fortresses. It is now demilitarised and open to the public with beautiful views looking over the hills and forests of the Ardennes. Namur stands at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers and its mascot is a snail, as the inhabitants pride themselves in being laid back and unhurried. That’s not the case at the moment, with crowds now dancing and jostling in the street as they listen to a particularly popular jazz band. One of the musicians is playing the saxophone, an appropriate choice given that just 30 minutes away is the city of Dinant, birthplace of the Jewish musician and innovator Adolphe Sax, who in 1840 invented this iconic instrument. One of Wallonia’s most famous tourist attractions is the town of Spa, a watering place since the 14th century, from where the word “spa” originates – synonymous with any place having a natural water source believed to possess special health properties. A visit here would not be complete without trying the famous product – but, truthfully,
it tastes so strongly of minerals, the water is quite hard to swallow. The town, however, is easier to appreciate, with its own funicular railway from the centre to a nearby hotel and spa complex situated up a steep hill. Nearby, too, is the famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, which hosts the annual Belgian Grand Prix. Wealthy tourists sampling the local product have naturally always needed their laundry done. The pure spring water made the clothes so soft that even after returning home, clients still sent their washing back to be done in Spa. Today, this has resulted in Europe’s only laundry museum – a small but fascinating place manned by volunteers. It shows that in ancient times rivers were used and human urine was a good way to get the suint out of wool. Launderers also found that the leaves of the Saponaria plant, when soaked in water, produced a sort of soap. In the Middle Ages, clothes were washed twice a year, in spring and autumn, using wood ash and then laid out in meadows where the sun would act as a bleach. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the first, basic washing machines were invented as

a result of a cholera outbreak, when the importance of cleanliness became more apparent. During the First World War, the large copper machines were often painted grey to disguise the fact that a valuable metal was being used and to save them from being requisitioned. After leaving this informative little gem of a place, I journeyed onwards to Liège, a city that has been prominent since the Middle Ages, but really blossomed during the industrial revolution. Although it is Belgium’s third city, after Brussels and Antwerp, it also seems to be inexplicably right off the tourist track. The main shopping centre, Médiacité, was designed by the Israeli architect Ron Arad. There was also once a small Jewish community here dating from the 19th century and, prior to the Nazi invasion of Belgium, there were around 2,000 Jews living here. Around 600 people were deported to death camps between 1942 and 1944 and post-war, many families made aliyah. Today, only about 200 families remain in the city. My visit to Liège coincided with the biannual Métamorphoses Festival and I went straight off to meet Thierry, who was to give me a sonic massage. This involved lying supine and blindfolded on a table, wearing headphones and having various types of sounds played, both on top and under me. I was not quite convinced by the ben-
efits of it – but it was an interesting experience to do once! The festival also consists of acrobatics, family yoga sessions and music, much of it being held in the attractive Boverie Park, which also houses a significant museum of art. Chips, beer and chocolate are perhaps what Belgium is known for overall, but that was before I sampled the Liège waffle. No other waffle can really compare. It needs no topping as it’s so very tasty on its own: small rich and intense; crunchy within from embedded pearls of sugar, yet firm on the outside. This waffle alone is enough to entice me back to beautiful Wallonia.

SEDRA Mishpatim
BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS Last week we saw the majesty of Divine revelation and God speaking to our ancestors on Mount Sinai. Many see the Ten Commandments as the pinnacle of religious and moral law. Yet they are only 10 of the 613 rules by which we Jews lead our lives. Parshat Mishpatim brings many of the interpersonal laws that make our lives better. One is that we should not lie. Many of us think that this rule is contained in the Ten Commandments, but in actuality that is not the whole truth. The Ten Commandments tells us not to give false evidence in court. Not lying is essential in our daily interactions. We rely on each other showing integrity and honesty in so many of our dealings, and if that trust broke down it would do our society huge damage. However, were we always to be honest it could also be potentially very damaging. Just think what constant brutal honesty would do to us. In that sense, there are times when white lies are essential. The Talmud in the second chapter of Bava Metzia tells us that there are some people, notably rabbinical scholars, who have the highest integrity. Yet even they may sometimes tell white lies, to avoid embarrassing situations. They can, for instance, lie about their Shabbat host’s hospitality, because if their host is too good, telling the truth would encourage huge numbers to flock to his famous table. They can lie about their marital relations, because such an issue is private. Finally, they can lie about their learning in cases where to do otherwise would be considered boastful. There is a Midrash that says even God sometimes keeps the truth hidden to allow the world to keep working without friction and embarrassment. Torah For Today What does the Torah say about... Groundhog Day BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Groundhog Day is marked in the USA and Canada on 2 February, when one determines whether spring will arrive late or early, based on whether a groundhog, re-emerging from its burrow, casts a shadow or not. What is the Torah view of such apparently superstitious practices? The Torah discourages us from worrying about the inexplicable. “The hidden things belong to the Lord our God,” we are told. Likewise, we are warned against soothsaying and divining. “There shall not be among you a cloud reader, a sorcerer, nor those who consort with familiar spirits...” Wearing a red thread to bless a person with good luck is
❝
considered expressly forbidden by the Torah. However, the Mishnah allows a person to go out on the Sabbath with amulets that apparently reflect superstitious belief, such as the wearing of a fox’s tooth. The reason to allow the wearing of such an item at all, let alone carry it into the public domain on the Sabbath, is that it was thought to improve the wearer’s health. Therefore, even if the aid is only psychological in nature, one may wear it. Nonetheless, any religious or cultic inference of any kind is forbidden as it implies the wearer’s recognition of the power and
THE TORAH DISCOURAGES WORRYING ABOUT THE INEXPLICABLE AND WE ARE WARNED AGAINST SOOTHSAYING
governance of demons and deities. What then of the popular film, Groundhog Day, which features this superstition in its storyline? The main protagonist is caught in a time loop and condemned to relive the same day repeatedly, like the groundhog that sees his shadow and so, thinking it is still winter, returns to his burrow for another six weeks. In these terms, Groundhog Day is theologically harmless. The return to the burrow by a creature is a natural behaviour in response to the weather. Therefore, whereas repetitive loops of behaviour may indicate obsessive compulsive disorder, the mere belief of winter lasting longer is based on a feature of God’s magnificent creation. The Bible Says What?
Progressively Speaking
‘Every seven years you must leave the land fallow’
How does our community tackle toxic masculinity?
BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS The last shmita or sabbatical year fell in 5775 – 2014/15. Traditionally, the land is left to lie fallow across Israel, restoring the earth’s fertility just as we are restored by the peace of Shabbat. The Torah understood that we cannot continually demand of the earth, and expect her to keep producing. But this wasn’t a simple thing for the communities of Israel to do. It requires a huge amount of faith that God will provide. It also required communities and families to support one another. Shmita wasn’t survivable if you were only in it for yourself. What could be gleaned from the land needed to be shared. Most likely communities prepared together, and shared together, to see everyone through. So shmita protected the environment, but was also a mechanism to ensure that consumer habits had their limits too. Profit and commerce aren’t bad per se, but every seven years there was a reset button that could be
pressed, returning everyone to a more even playing field, and reminding us that nothing is really ours in perpetuity. The continual purchasing many of us practice now, easily becomes mindless and is hugely damaging to the earth. We are still a couple of years off the next shmita, but perhaps it is time to start planning and thinking about how the Sabbatical might be transformational for us as modern Jews. As it says in the Talmud: ‘Those who prepare before Shabbat will eat on Shabbat; those who did not prepare before Shabbat, what will they have to eat on Shabbat?’ (Avoda Zara 3a). If we don’t prepare, we may not starve as they might have done in ancient Israel – but we might not also reap the benefits spiritually and materially that are being offered to us by this ancient idea. Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers is community educator at the Movement for Reform Judaism
BY RABBI LEA MÜHLSTEIN Toxic masculinity, previously only known to regulars in women’s studies classrooms, has made it into the headlines again, prompted by the Gillette advert (pictured), a short film entitled We Believe: the Best Men Can Be. With responses ranging from praise to outrage, the film drew public attention to the fact certain aspects of society’s image of masculinity can have a negative impact on women and men, boys and girls. Our Jewish tradition is not immune to providing examples of masculinity that can be damaging. Laws focusing on women’s modesty, as well as sexual purity, have been misused throughout time to restrict women’s freedom. The Tanakh provides us with graphic descriptions of abuse of women: the rape of Lot’s daughters and of Dina, the little-known 13th child of Jacob, as well as, most horrifically, the deadly abuse of the unnamed concubine in Judges
Chapter 19. Yet, if we study the reception of these stories and our interpretive history, the narratives were always presented as warnings about how not to behave, rather than glorifying an image of man who can control woman without bounds. Joshua Wolfsun for Lilith magazine wrote that the ‘Nice Jewish Boy’ is a well-defined, masculine archetype prized for having opposing characteristics to those associated with toxic masculinity. Instead of promoting feats of physical strength, decisiveness, and violence, the Nice Jewish Boy is thoughtful, studious, sensitive,
successful, and a caring provider. Daniel Boyarin, Aviva Cantor and others have shown this image is not new, but has deep roots dating back to the Talmud and even earlier. So in terms of what the Jewish community can do to fight toxic masculinity, the answer is perhaps rather simple: promote the image of the Nice Jewish Boy to wider society just as Gillette has attempted to do. But we must also make sure to tackle some of the underlying misogyny of the Nice Jewish Boy. Namely, that the purpose of these characteristics is to achieve the goal of acquiring a woman and therefore becoming a successful man. The reward of being a Nice Jewish Man is far greater than getting something (or someone) – it is helping to create a more just society! Rabbi Lea Mühlstein serves Northwood Synagogue

Professional advice from our panel / Ask Our Experts
Ask our Our trusty team of advisers answer your questions about everything from law and finance to dating and dentistry. This week: Understanding underwriting terms, being happy and locking in the best exchange rate...
TREVOR GEE PRIVATE HEALTHCARE SPECIALIST
PATIENT HEALTH Dear Trevor My son is getting married this weekend and I want to ensure they both have health cover, but I don’t understand the various underwriting terms the insurers use when providing pricing. Erica Dear Erica The terms they use can be challenging, but the issues are relatively straightforward. There are three main types of underwriting: moratorium, full medical declaration, and continued medical exclusions. With the first, any health or related conditions going back five years prior to the policy being taken out would not be covered for two years, and assuming no medical intervention is
TANYA MANN RENNICK LIFE COACH
TANYA MANN RENNICK Dear Tanya Following my divorce, I moved into my parents’ house and my mother died shortly after. I felt I couldn’t leave my father alone, especially as he had started to show signs of dementia, so I stayed with him. My father’s illness became worse, so I gave
up my job and became his full-time carer. As the years went by, my social life dwindled. Since my marriage, my romantic life has been non-existent. I lost my father just over two years ago, and I feel I have forgotten how to be happy, Jeff Dear Jeff Thank you for your honesty. You have already taken the most important step: you have realised that things must change. You have mentioned the word happy, so you obviously know that’s what you need to aim for. For the past few years, you have commendably lived a selfless life and now it’s time to put yourself first. You referred to your keen
required in those two subsequent years, you should have full cover. Should you not have had a medical issue in the five years before the policy started, you would be automatically covered for any new issue. Insurers cover acute conditions, but not chronic, and acute is regarded as a condition that is likely to respond to established treatment and the condition resolved. So, asthma is regarded as chronic, but not cancer. Full medical declaration is the process whereby the client provides a full medical history, which allows the insurer to stipulate any condition that would not be covered, and continued medical exclusions is used when a client switches their insurer, and any existing exclusions will be carried over to the new policy. These definitions are meant only as a general guide and as each insurer has different terms on their declaration, your intermediary will advise you whether and how they will apply to your situation.
interest in classical music, walking and sport, including your past experience as a cricket coach. Perhaps you could get back into working in this area. There are some excellent walking clubs you could join; try Meetup online. There’s one that specialises in weekends away for singles, meaning there are lots of people to discover with a common interest. Commit to treating yourself at least once every three months to a concert. Lastly, it’s really important to make a vision board showing all the things you’d like to happen in the next twelve months. Don’t get too bogged down in long-term worries; instead focus on making short-term plans of action.
NAOMI FELTHAM INTERNATIONAL PAYMENTS SPECIALIST
CURRENCIES DIRECT Dear Naomi I am thinking about making aliyah in the next six months. Before moving, I will sell my house here in the UK and transfer the funds to Israel for an apartment purchase. Unfortunately, with the slow housing market it could take a while to sell my property,
but I still want to make sure I get the best rate. If the rate shoots up in the next week to 4.9 or 5, is there a way to lock it in, even though I don’t have the funds available? Jonathan Dear Jonathan This is a great question and something we get
asked regularly. Once you register for free with Currencies Direct, you have the ability to talk to your dedicated dealer about the market and your current situation. Your dealer can offer you a number of options, including a forward contract. With a forward contract, you have the ability to lock in a rate for a small deposit, even when you don’t have the total funds available. It is technically a ‘buy now, pay later’ contract, giving you time to sell your house and get your finances together. This is something our clients use regularly with volatile currencies, such as the shekel.
