"Oh, my children, my poor children/' he exclaimed. -..:•• His is one of the saddest cases ever before the naturalization court.here. "the. story of the last seven years of his and his family's lives in an epic of hunger, separation, war, sorrow, and the death: of three of his family by starvation in famine-ridden Galicia. Somewhere on the: Atlantic ocean are five of his children, sailing toward their father, sisters and brothers in the land of promise. . .They do not know, that the. gates of America have been shut against them today—because of a technicality. Technicality is Bar Schell is an expert shoemaker and has worked continuously since he arrived in Omaha in 1913 with thre6 of his children. But a technicality stands between him and his five other children. For he has not resided in one place continuously lor the last five years, as the naturalization law requires. Three

years ago 4e- went" to Braddock, Pa., where he was manager of a shoe section in a department store. He stayed two years. This stood' against him in naturalization' court this morning and the government examiner stood sternly for the technicality: M. Fanger, brotber-in-law of Schell and owner of a _ store in Council Bluffs, .was one of Schell's witnesses. He said thai while "Schell was in Braddock he visited him frequently when he ;went to.New York on business. He knew he was there all the time. But the law doesn't recognize such knowledge. .
