editor’s letter

DearReader,

This issue is dedicated to all the dreamers. Remember to never stop believing in yourself. The world may try to discourage you, but always remember that you have the ability to achieve your dreams.

My parents, who showed incredible tenacity, instilled in me the belief that anything is possible. Despite challenges, my father - a Black man who didn’t speak English - came to this country and successfully opened multiple businesses. What I got from his example is: you are enough, and you have the power to create a bright future for yourself- but it starts with a dream.

Blessings

SPRING 2024

This issue of Jez Magazine is dedicated to dreamers from all walks of life.

The dream of fourth-generation skincare wizards, Jami and Klaus Heidegger, the brains behind cult favorite Kiel’s, was to create skincare that is high-performing, result-driven and supersedes everything on the market.

THE RESULTS:

RETROUVE’ (@retrouveskin www.retrouve.com)

Now in its tenth year, it is a skincare line primed for results.

Retrouvé products boost hydration, brightens, and smooths the appearance of fine lines to promote a more beautiful complexion.

I love the convenience of their travel-size combos.

Each of these bestsellers contains a synergistic blend of ingredients to boost the skin’s suppleness.

Daytime travel kit

Nutrient Face Serum (15 mL)

Dynamic Nourishing Face Cream (15 mL) $244.00

Nighttime travel kit

Apply this skin-revitalizing and potently moisturizing duo before bed (where skin does the majority of its rejuvenation) and wake up to visibly recovered, transformed, radiant, healthy-looking skin. It is especially beneficial for balanced to very dry or mature skin types.

Intensive Replenishing Facial Moisturizer (15 mL)

Revitalizing Eye Concentrate Skin Hydrator (15 mL)

$332.00

Their newest addition, Balancing Face Oil Is a light-textured Balancing Face Oil that helps to balance and replenish natural oil levels in the skin. Fast-absorbing, this luxurious oil leaves skin feeling hydrated and satiny-smooth. $190.00

All of it is a must-have!!!

Jez Magazine was founded on a dream. Through sheer will and the support of our creative community, that dream represents the reality before you. Sharing impactful ideology reflecting the evolution of Culture, Philanthropy, and Fashion, supports our primary focus to foster global goodwill. Our dreams say a lot about our past, the present and of course our future. What do you dream? We decided to explore that question further with some of our favorite people.

And boy, were we blown away. And yes, almost everyone we talked to have dreams of falling or flying or being trapped. We travel in our dreams, accomplish goals, face fears and gain introspection on life while sleeping. And for some, the color spectrum permeates every dream sequence. Truly fascinating.

Our friend, Actor Sam Vartholomeos, was delightfully expressive while sharing his thoughts on dreams with us. Recently heralded for his mesmerizing performance in Apple TVs original psychological thriller series, The Crowded Room, Vartholomeos is testament to the power of dreams fulfilled. Fully immersed in the theatrical arts as a teenager, Sam was destined to achieve his goal early on. His determined pursuit eventually landed him in highly visible roles in features such as Star Trek: Discovery, and Bridge Tunnel, jettisoning him forward in his career. Truly humble and candid, we’re thrilled to share his insight on dreams with you.

Learn more about Sam Vartholomeos @samvartholomeus. (Additional perspectives from participants on dreams follows this interview. Responses have been edited for clarity.)

JEZ: As a child, what did you dream about most often?

SAM: I have enough trouble remembering what I dream about as an adult, so I’ll have to try thinking back. (Laughing) I do recall having extremely vivid dreams much more often than I do now. Maybe the excessive visual stimulants we experience daily skew our imaginations, so they don’t have to work nearly as hard to keep us entertained. My imagination was on overdrive as a kid. I remember being heavily affected by whatever happened to me that day or week, and that would be the basis of my dreams at night. Sometimes I’d see myself in the office waiting room where my mom worked. At other times I’d be swimming with Orcas after watching FREE WILLY.

JEZ: Do you dream of world peace and the end of war? Do you dream of angels? Of meeting God?

SAM: I dream of simpler times, especially when I visit my grandfather in Greece. He lives on a small farm in a village on a mountain where life is an idyl. He eats vegetables from his garden and eggs from his chickens. He says “good morning” to everyone he passes on the street. He goes to church every Sunday and thinks every chirping bird he hears is my late grandma visiting him. That’s peace - in the simple beauty of life, there lies God.

JEZ: Did you ever dream of running away? Of being chased? Of falling? Of flying?

SAM: I have this reoccurring dream that comes three or four times a year. I remember dreaming it when I was a kid and it’s stayed nearly identical

since. My mother used to work in an Ophthalmologist’s office with a large waiting area. In the dream, I find myself in that waiting room, and whenever I move closer into the room, it seems to get longer, and longer, and longer, to the point where I never really enter the room or escape it. The walls start to warp, and I’m mute despite all my efforts to scream for help. It gives me an inescapable, haunting feeling and I always wake up in a cold sweat from it. If there are any good dream interpreters out there, please contact me. Or exorcists…

JEZ: Did you ever dream of having a different family? A new partner? A new lover?

SAM: It’s always easy to think the grass is greener on the other side, isn’t it? In my short time on this planet, I’ve found that to rarely be the case. My imagination ran wild as a kid as it still does now, and I find the stories I make up in my mind about the other side are far more entertaining than the reality. Whether it’s family, friends, or lovers, I’ve learned to cherish the people around me, and not to be so quick to quit relationships.

JEZ: Some people dream in color. Have you?

SAM: I’ve always had trouble with color unfortunately. When we were younger, my brother and I took an online color blind test and discovered we were both color blind! I’m being a tad dramatic here - I say we’re color challenged. We sometimes mix purple and pink, or red with orange. Certain shades of similar colors can be confusing to the eye. Maybe that’s found its way into my dreams because I can’t say I’ve remembered specific colors or hues in them.

JEZ: Have you ever dreamed of being a celebrity? A CEO? A billionaire?

SAM: If being a superhero is a celebrity, then yes, I’ve dreamed of being a celebrity. In some of my dreams I’ve imagined myself having incredible strength and flying to any destination I want. Or of having the ability to play with time as I choose, similar to Doctor Strange. Or like Adam Sandler in CLICK. I’ve dreamt of being an Actor, but I’ve never dreamt of being a celebrity in real life.

JEZ: Have you ever dreamed of moving to a different City? State? Country?

SAM: I’m a first generation Greek American, and I’m very happy my parent’s families settled in New York, because I can’t imagine living in any other state in America. You can’t find the energy that New York city exudes anywhere else in the world. Too bad we can’t bottle it! There’s definitely a reason people risk everything to come here.

If we’re talking international, Greece has been a part of my dreams in recent years. So many of my summers were spent there with my grandparents. It’s the only reason I can speak Greek. I can go on about all the reasons to move there: the food, the culture, the people, the weather, the atmosphere, the history. Did I mention the food yet?

I’ve been to London a couple of times, and that’s definitely a city I’d consider moving to for the British experience. But only after investing in a good umbrella.

JEZ: Did any of your dreams ever come true?

SAM: I still have a way to go as far as reaching my goals in life, but getting to do what I do has been my dream from as far back as I can remember. I thank God, my parents, and everyone who’s helped me along the way that I get to call myself an Actor.

During the pandemic, a friend asked me what would be my dream job? I said a regular role in a series on a New York based show. Four months later I booked a leading role on a series called BRIDGE AND TUNNEL written and directed by THE New Yorker, Ed Burns. How’s that for manifesting a dream?

Coat by HELEN YARMAK

Shirt by HARDCORE FASHION

JEZ: Living in NYC. Was that a dream come true? Why or why not?

SAM: I’ve already talked about my love for this city, but one thing I wish I could share is a practical perspective on how it feels to grow up somewhere else and come to New York for the first time.

Imagine. Experiencing Times Square. Taking a bite of your first slice of real pizza. Nearly getting your teeth kicked in by a subway performer. And on and on. New Yorkers often take our lovely city for granted, so I’ve been learning to stop and smell the garbage. (Laughing)

JEZ: Have you ever created an invention in your dreams? Solved a crime? Won the lottery?

SAM: My dad takes the numbers he sees in his dreams very seriously. Maybe I should start writing them down and play the lottery. You never know. (Laughing)

We felt our Dare to Dream feature would be the perfect means to pay tribute to ideas nurtured by our dreams for that’s where creativity is born. And that the launch of the JEZMagazine App would be the perfect vehicle to encourage everyone to never stop dreaming.

We discovered that even though we may not dream specifics that guide us to success, when sleeping, the ideals and experiences that make us who we are surface through the dream state. Thanks to our contributors for your candid responses. Your answers serve to remind us of our singular humanity. And that dreams really can come true.

JEZ: Do you dream of world peace and the end of war? Do you dream of angels? Of meeting God?

Elliott: I don’t dream of peace, but I aim to let it be in my life daily. I don’t dream of angels, but I know I’m surrounded by them. My newest angel is my dad. I believe I meet God every day and that’s not a dream, it’s an experience.

JEZ: Did you ever dream of running away? Of being chased? Of falling? Of flying?

Elliott: I know I’ve dreamed of flying. I am sure I had a nightmare or two where I was chased. As for running away, yes. I dreamed it and I did it.

JEZ: Have you ever created an invention in your dreams? Solved a crime? Won the lottery? Elliott: Yes! I’ve “created inventions” and then didn’t move on them for whatever reason. Then, several months later I saw them on TV or scrolled through Instagram and saw ads for them. LOL. I think that happens to every creative/visionary on this planet. We just have to catch it when it drops and make a faith move. I didn’t solve a crime in my dreams because I don’t have those type of dreams. I’ve also never dreamed of winning the lottery, but I have won a sweepstakes in my dream and then it happened in real life. I won a free sportscar and $10K from Pepsi!

world peace and I hope and wish for it myself.

JEZ: Have any of your dreams ever come true?

Evan: I’m really happy to say that they have. I’ve been able to create art and make a living off of it for the last 10years. I’ve created pieces I love and in my own art studio. When I was younger this was not something I thought I could achieve. I thought it was just a dream.

JEZ: Living in NYC. Was that a dream come true? Why or why not?

Evan: I grew up in New York City and have spent my entire life here. I feel blessed to be from NYC because you see and learn about the world from the inside out. I never

dreamed of living anywhere else. As I have gotten older, I’ve learned that no matter where I go, I will always want to come back to NYC. But I constantly have dreams of traveling and seeing more of the world.

JEZ: Have you ever created an invention in your dreams? Solved a crime? Won the lottery?

Evan: I’ve dreamt many creative design ideas, painting ideas, and songs. My creativity is heavily influenced by my dreams. I love keeping a dream journal and writing or drawing my dreams first thing when I wake up. It helps my creative process flow. I’ve even invented a few things in my sleep, I’d love to tell you more, but I need to patent them first!

I have come to a point in life where my dreams are more vivid than ever, but I have no time to sleep these days. I have to live my dreams and make them reality. I’ll sleep when I’m dead!

JEZ: Have you ever dreamed of moving to a different city? State? Country?

Caviar: I’ve always wanted to live in the South of France for at least one year. And in my dreams, I’m sailing 3 months out of the year on my yacht as a billionaire of course!

JEZ: Have any of your dreams ever come true?

Caviar: My dreams are coming true now! I own my own businesses. I’m traveling and spending time with my daughters because I have freedom.
