2018
ourimpact
In an era of tremendous growth in our community, we are leading unprecedented impact. It’s no secret that our Jewish community is one of the fastest growing in North America. Our local Jewish population is expected to nearly double, with thousands of families with children, Millennials, Boomers and seniors calling the Palm Beaches home. We have the responsibility of providing for the evolving needs of the vulnerable while ensuring an abundance of meaningful experiences for anyone and everyone looking to connect with Jewish life. There are so many accomplishments to celebrate this year that fulfill this purpose. To name just a few:
You now have a new city hall of your Jewish community. Federation’s new, modern and accessible headquarters is now at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Building. You created a more compassionate community, with families, teens and children joining together to demonstrate their commitment to positive Jewish values. You joined together to volunteer, travel, advocate, celebrate and provide leadership, reinforcing your commitment to the Jewish community and inspiring others to take part. Your giving to the Annual Campaign and your legacy giving through our Jewish Community Foundation is empowering us to change thousands of lives here, in Israel and in 70 countries across the globe. Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do to build the Palm Beaches into one of the most active, vibrant and impactful Jewish communities anywhere. Sincerely,
Ira M. Gerstein Board Chair

You are
transforming his life and so many more
You are empowering Jewish Federation to create an inclusive community for people with disabilities.
David from Greenacres is 16 years old, fun-loving, adventurous – and one of hundreds of kids in the Palm Beaches diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. David is building his unique Jewish identity through our community’s day camps and Hebrew school for children with disabilities. He is learning about Jewish values and traditions in a warm, nurturing environment – even getting personalized training for his bar mitzvah later this year.
200
local children, teens and adults with disabilities have connected to Jewish life through programs at schools, camps and residential services.
What’s next We are building a more inclusive community for people with disabilities in Israel. Federation’s partners at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) launched Israel Unlimited, a new program providing opportunities for people with disabilities to lead independent, dignified and fulfilling lives. Israel Unlimited is focused specifically on inclusive opportunities on Israel’s university campuses and changing negative attitudes in less educated communities.
How you are transforming lives: • Building Jewish identity by providing scholarships for children to enjoy life-changing Jewish experiences at overnight summer camp • Connecting children with disabilities and their families with Jewish identity and education • Mentoring children from single-parent homes • Strengthening Jewish identity in young adults through Israel travel experiences • Advancing the integration of Ethiopian-Israelis into Israeli society with language, education and job resources
You are
empowering their lives
and so many more
You are empowering Jewish Federation to stand up to harassment, abuse and bullying.
How you are empowering lives: • Enabling adults with disabilities to live fulfilling, independent lives • Encouraging healthy relationships with peer mentorship and domestic abuse counseling • Empowering better reading skills in public schools through Coalition for Literacy
Alyssa, a 17-year-old who lives in Jupiter, is sharing tools with other teens to stand up to sexual harassment they may face. Alyssa is a volunteer trainer with the Dating Abuse Prevention program through Federation’s partners at Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service. She is ensuring that her peers have a forum to share personal stories, and that they are empowered to build healthy relationships that do not tolerate abusive or harassing behavior.
1,400
teens have participated in programs to learn how to lead healthy relationships and prevent dating abuse and bullying.
• Promoting diversity and tolerance to children throughout the Palm Beaches • Providing Jewish teens with leadership opportunities in the Palm Beaches and in Israel
What’s next Jewish life is thriving in the former Soviet Union – where it was once nearly wiped out. Federation is working with our global partners (The Jewish Agency for Israel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) to provide new opportunities for young people in the former Soviet Union to connect to and celebrate their Jewish identity. We are expanding Jewish day camps for children and teens to learn about Jewish traditions and Israel, while building strong bonds among one another. These efforts are encouraging younger generations to one day become an inspiring community of informed and proud Jewish people.
You are
creating a more compassionate community
You are empowering Jewish Federation to provide opportunities that build bridges between the Jewish community and other faiths and perspectives. Lily from West Palm Beach is opening her eyes to new perspectives. She took part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, coordinated through Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center, where she volunteered with kids at the local Boys & Girls Club. Not only is she leading Jewish values in the greater community, she’s part of a larger effort to bring people together and participating in civil dialogue in an increasingly divisive world.
500
volunteers participated in Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day that brought together members of the Jewish and African-American communities.
What’s next In summer 2018, teens with Federation’s Jewish Teen Initiative traveled to Atlanta for the Project Tikvah volunteer service experience. The teens learned about the city’s racial history and led volunteering projects to benefit underserved residents in the greater community.
How you are creating a more compassionate community: • Celebrating Jewish culture and holidays with community-wide family programs • Building connections among young adults through Birthright and MASA experiences in Israel • Providing scholarships and incentives for Jewish teens in the Palm Beaches to connect with teens throughout the country • Bringing together teens and Holocaust survivors to create a new generation of advocates against bigotry and hatred • Empowering students in the Palm Beaches to connect with students in Israel through school twinning projects
caring You are
for her
and so many more
You are empowering Jewish Federation to ensure vulnerable seniors and Holocaust survivors are aging in their homes with dignity and independence.
Fran, a Holocaust survivor and widow in Boynton Beach, is living with dignity thanks to a volunteer companion who visits her every week. In addition to bringing kosher meals and medicine, the companion spends time with Fran, whose immobility prevents her from interacting with others. The two have developed a meaningful friendship, offering Fran a break from isolation and enabling her to live in her home independently.
30,000
kosher meals are delivered each year to frail seniors and survivors by Federation’s partners.
How you are caring for seniors and survivors: • Enabling Holocaust survivors to age with dignity through home healthcare, companion services and meal deliveries • Healing trauma with grief counseling • Equipping caregivers of survivors with training to understand unique sensitivities of survivor companionship • Providing isolated seniors with companionship and community programs
What’s next To better understand the rapidly changing and growing needs of the Palm Beaches’ significant senior and Holocaust survivor population, Federation is leading an expansive community demographic study. With thousands of seniors moving to the area, the study will provide critical insights into Jewish community behaviors and preferences. The study’s results will enable Federation and our partners to best address the needs and desires of seniors and thousands of community members.
You are
inspiring their lives and so many more
You are empowering Jewish Federation to innovate how we educate children in our community. Brianne, a student at a Hebrew school in Boynton Beach, was struggling to connect to Jewish values through her school’s curriculum. The school introduced the groundbreaking new ShalomLearning online platform, which provides fun interactive activities and curriculum on digital devices. Brianne now better understands Jewish traditions, holidays and values in a way that is meaningful and relevant to her.
2,000
students connected to their Jewish identity in innovative ways through new educational initiatives in local schools.
What’s next
To bring our local community an expanded Jewish educational experience, Federation is strengthening our commitment to our educational partners. Together with our partners at Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Preparatory School, we’ve formed a strategic educational alliance with David Posnack Jewish Day School – recently named the #1 Jewish day school in Florida – enabling Meyer Prep to benefit from Posnack’s successful educational model. In addition, Friedman Commission for Jewish Education joined Federation as our community’s center for Jewish learning, which will grow signature programs like PJ Library® and the Melton School and deliver a centralized approach to provide the highest quality educational experiences for all ages.
How you are inspiring lives: • Inspiring Jewish teens to live the value of tikkun olam through Jewish Teen Initiative service projects • Fostering Jewish life and learning with deliveries of free Jewish books and music to young families through PJ Library® • Building a foundation of Jewish early childhood education through scholarships and incentives • Developing the next generation of leaders in the Palm Beaches and Israel through the Emerging Leadership Program
saving You are
so many lives
You are empowering Jewish Federation to provide emergency relief in times of crisis.
Beth and Jeff are now residents of the Palm Beaches – but it wasn’t an easy road. Their home in another community was destroyed by this past year’s devastating hurricane season. Through the support of contributions to Federation’s Hurricane Emergency Fund, Beth and Jeff were provided emergency supplies to weather the storm. After, Federation ensured they were relocated to the Palm Beaches and provided with food, medicine and trauma counseling. Today, they are building their new home and life in our community.
20,000
people impacted by crises such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma received relief and aid this year from Federation and our partners.
How you are saving lives: • Combatting food insecurity by providing grocery store gift cards to families locally and globally • Providing safe paths to Israel for at-risk families around the world • Caring for families in the Palm Beaches with mental health and bereavement services • Equipping Jewish community institutions with security and emergency-preparatory expertise
What’s next In Israel’s periphery, Federation is creating opportunities for at-risk new mothers to provide a nurturing environment for their newborn children. Baby Futures, a program of The Jewish Agency for Israel, connects mentors with dozens of mothers in Israel’s partnership region of TZAHAR (Tzfat, Hazor HaGlilit and Rosh Pina). The mentors provide early intervention for mothers to put their children on a path to a healthy, successful life.
