LEADERS GUIDE
The Business & Philanthropic Leaders IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF THE PALM BEACHES.
1
Caler Donten, Levine AD
I am proud to introduce to you the inaugural edition of the Jewish Business & Professional Leaders Guide. The Jewish Professionals Network – a division of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County – is focused on “Doing Good is Good for Business”. This guide is truly representative of our mission. For me, being active in and giving to Jewish Federation has been a valuable aspect of my career and social life. Federation believes in convening the community, collectively responding to important issues and thinking sophisticatedly to create effective solutions in one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in the nation. The professionals listed in this guide demonstrate these key principles through their leadership and focus on growing our area’s economy at such a crucial time. It is an honor to be listed among them and refer their business to you. When we gather together, network with one another, and do good – “tzedakah” – we fulfill our responsibility as business & professional leaders to ensure our community is a great place to grow our professional, social and family lives. We are investing in our Jewish community – its infrastructure, life-changing programs, and in turn, ourselves. Thank you for all you do. Sincerely,
Craig S. Storch 2015-2016 Chair, Jewish Professionals Network Principal, Bernstein Private Wealth Management

Why I believe in the mission of Jewish Federation: I believe in supporting the entire Jewish community, from cradle to grave, locally and around the world. Jewish Federation of Palm Beach assesses all communal needs and responds to those needs for a vibrant Jewish community. I am honored to be involved.
What makes me a leader in my field? My legal practice is exclusively dedicated to the handling of Alternative Dispute Resolution construction-related claims – as a mediator, arbitrator and third-party neutral in the areas of construction contracts, construction insurance coverage, lien law, delay damages and construction litigation. I am Board Certified by The Florida Bar in Construction Law; thus, I consider myself an expert in matters relating to the design and construction of improvements on private and public projects. Less than one percent of the attorneys admitted to The Florida Bar are board certified in construction law, and only seven percent of the attorneys in Florida are board certified in any area of law. Some of my honors include: recognized by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers, Construction Law, 2012, 2015; Chambers USA Ranking, Florida Construction Lawyer, Tier 1 and Star Individual, 2003-2014; Who’s Who Legal: Construction 2015, International Who’s Who of Construction Law, 2015.

Why I believe in the mission of Jewish Federation: Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County is uniquely positioned to use the power of the collective to support the vital services needed for a thriving, safe and meaningful Jewish community locally, nationally and globally. I am proud to be a consistent supporter of Jewish Federation.
What makes me a leader in my field? From the founding of American Commercial Realty Corp. in 2002, I have focused on managing select properties owned by its affiliates, as well as properties owned by third parties. My experience in this niche spans for more than three decades, managing properties in Florida, the Midwest and Southeast. These properties include shopping centers, mixed use developments, multi-family residential properties and retail developments. Prior to ACR, I was Vice President and Director of Real Estate for Baer’s Furniture Co., Inc., where I oversaw the company’s expansion from five stores and one warehouse in two counties to 14 stores and four warehouses throughout southern Florida. Prior to this, I served in senior positions in asset management, property management and leasing with companies headquartered in New York and Colorado, during which time I oversaw staff and properties in approximately a dozen states. I am active in my professional industry by being a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, having previously served as the head of its Palm Beach County division. 9

What makes me a leader in my field? I co-founded a private equity firm, Sterling Partners, 32 years ago that invests in growing companies in healthcare, education and business services (data centers, financial services and logistics). Sterling is known for building great partnerships with company leaders to build great businesses. I co-chaired the firm’s Operating Committee and developed the firm’s governance practice, including serving on many portfolio company boards and recruiting other board members. In January of 2015, I started Caretta Ventures, which invests in smaller companies with strong potential, mission and purpose. When my wife and I had children of our own, we started volunteering as a family on weekends to create meaningful and interactive real world opportunities to learn these values. In 2012, we formed Karma for Cara Foundation in memory of our daughter who cared so much about helping others. The foundation recognizes amazing examples of service, provides micro-grants to teens who need funding for their service projects. We also publish a children’s book “Cara Cookie Volunteers,” to teach young children about their first volunteering experience.

Why I believe in the mission of Jewish Federation: Through our giving, Federation provides support to agencies here, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world. I was fortunate to be a part of Federation’s Leadership Succession Initiative, spending a week in Israel with great local friends. We learned how Federation-supported programs help Ethiopian Jews create a new life in Israel, and how our dollars provide needed support and counseling to women and children in ultra-Orthodox sections of TZAHAR, our community’s Partnership2Gether region. We saw our dollars providing education and training for those in need to become active professionals. Federation touches more Jewish lives than any other organization in the world, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Why I believe in the mission of Jewish Federation: Jewish Federation is the optimal place to coalesce the resources and needs of our local, national and global community.
What makes me a leader in my field? We engineer, underwrite and administer consequential life insurance assets for affluent folks who definitely do not need life insurance.
We promise more than people expect, we deliver more than we promise, and we don’t miss deadlines. My team developed Flah & Company’s “Return on Insurance®” Process, where life insurance is used as a single‐purpose asset, whether for philanthropy, maintaining the integrity of precious collections or the generational transfer of wealth values. FlahCo has been quoted in national publications, including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. I am an accredited instructor in various states for Bar, CPA and CTFA continuing education courses. I am a former board member of Partners Financial and a current and past advisory board member of several major insurance carriers.

Why I believe in the mission of Jewish Federation: To me, Jewish leadership is all about identifying the greatest needs in the community and stepping up to fulfill those needs. In 2005, when I moved to Palm Beach County, I saw the importance of supporting educational resources for Israel’s Ethiopian Jewish population. Together with Federation’s global partner the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), we set up a program to help Ethiopian-Israeli children gain rewards and recognition through academic and community achievement. We have a responsibility to take care of Jews at home and around the world. Federation is the system that helps to make it all happen.
What makes me a leader in my field? I run BG Strategic Advisors, a leading investment banking and merchant banking firm focused on transportation, logistics and the supply chain sector. We provide advice and capital to outstanding companies in this field. We have been responsible for over 30 successful transactions with large firms like UPS, entrepreneurial firms, and private equity firms. Prior to founding BG Strategic Advisors, I founded 3PLex, an Internet solution that enables thirdparty logistics companies to automate their business. I raised $28 million from blue-chip investors, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, BancBoston Ventures, CNF, and Ionian. This generated 3PLex feature stories in The New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, ABC, The Journal of Commerce, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and other media. 3PLex is now a part of IBM. 35

I present at local and statewide conferences for others in my field on innovative ways to teach, such as incorporating Skype into lessons. I recently attended the summer workshop at the Library of Congress. Additionally, I am a part of the inaugural Leadership in Education class through Leadership Florida. 70
