publisher’s note

I’m often asked how I came up with the idea of producing a luxury publication. What was my inspiration? Well, I have been living on Long Island’s Gold Coast for almost 30 years and found that there is no other place I would rather live. I am proud to share all that Long Island has to offer: its vineyards and farms, its miles of beaches, the sense of seclusion you can find, all within close proximity to the Big Apple. I also enjoy being part of the ‘summer playground’ of the great industrialists of the turn of the 20th century. The Vanderbilts, Woolworths, Astors, Pratts and Morgans, among others, maintained a huge presence here with their vast vacation homes. While much has been lost through demolition, legacies continue with museums, refurbished estates, donated parklands, and oral and written histories. I figure if those wealthy families chose Long Island as a vacation destination, then it’s good enough for my family. On the literary front, F. Scott Fitzgerald found inspiration for his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, on our Island’s Gold Coast. With the resurgence of interest in the Gatsby lifestyle thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s new movie, we revisit those days in our article, “Gatsby’s Long Island,” written by Monica Randall, 25A’s resident expert on all things Gold Coast. I was pleasantly surprised when starting 25A magazine to receive such recognition and so many invites to celebrity parties in such a short time. I am not surprised, however, that 25A magazine has grown and gained such a faithful following. For that, I say thank you. Keep reading 25A and enjoying all the photos we work hard to bring you. Let’s have fun at all those parties this summer!

The Truth about Beauty….. Father’s Day Guide to Grooming Essentials By Cori Goldfarb, founder Truth + Beauty

T

here’s no question that, now more than ever, men have gotten more open to pampering themselves. They’ve begun to discover the perks of grooming products and services (something we women have known all along!). But many dads are reluctant to indulge themselves with a rich moisturizer or scrub….or, they might be a bit confused about the array of options out there and what each can do. Whether pampering your Pop or beautifying your Beau, check out my favorite picks of cosmetic services and products specifically designed to meet every man’s needs. Brotox– Neck ties, move over! This year, the hottest gift for dads is “Brotox”! It’s true! There’s been an astounding 56% increase in the number of men getting this cosmetic treatment; in fact, the 2011 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report says it’s now the single most common cosmetic surgical procedure among men. It’s gotten so popular among males that the term “brotox” now appears in the online Urban Dictionary!

Kyoku for Men Daily Facial Cleanser – Personally, I love the Kyoku line for men. The scent is both masculine and sexy, and the results are smoother, tighter skin. Beginners should start with the Basic Facial Cleanser that promises to wash off grime and promote skin cell regeneration. A bonus: it even combats post-shave inflammation! Baxter After Shave Balm- The well-groomed man will want to be introduced to Baxter. This west coast line is designed to provide men with intelligent skincare solutions, tackling all the challenges of shaving, cleansing, anti-aging, and other basics. If your man already moisturizes, opt for Baxter’s TSA approved travel kit. It’s perfect gift for the man who has everything! The Dad in your life may seem like a difficult customer to shop for, but my guess is he’ll appreciate a deviation from the standard necktie this year…along with the opportunity to put his own best face forward!

Shine Dental Associates of the North Shore, established in 2011, is dedicated to providing the highest quality of dental care to its patients. With a main office in Syosset, along with a sister office, Island Dental Associates in Franklin Square, the practice accepts most insurances and specializes in general and cosmetic services as well as implants, root canals, periodontics, whitening, orthodontics and sleep apnea. Additionally, Shine Dental strives to afford optimal dental health and care for infants, children and adolescents in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. In addition to free consultations, the group provides comprehensive emergency dental care in its state-of-the-art office facility. To ensure the most timely pain relief, emergency cases can usually be accommodated the same day and the group accepts walk-in patients as well. Shine Dental also offers home care through the Visiting Dental Care of New York division of the practice. Established by Dr. Eric Weinstein, D.D.S., P.C., who owns Shine Dental along with Drs. Vikas Mittle and Dr. Concetta Mangiaracina, the doctor visits hospitals, extended care facilities, residences and nursing homes to provide all types of dental services 26 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

at the convenience of his patients and their caregivers. All six of Shine Dental’s on-staff residencytrained dentists have attended numerous continuing education dental seminars and are constantly furthering their education and working to keep up with – and stay ahead of – rapidly advancing techniques and procedures in the dentistry field. They are members of several dental associations, including the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Academy, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Hygiene Association, the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, the New York State Dental Academy and the Nassau County Dental Society, to name a few. 25A recently spoke with Dr. Weinstein and asked him what makes Shine Dental the dental group Long Islanders should turn to: 25A magazine (25A): What sets Shine Dental above other dental groups on Long Island? Dr. Eric Weinstein (EW): We offer the latest in general, cosmetic, implant and specialty dental services and everything is done inhouse. We do not outsource; all our dental work is done under one roof. We have 24/7 emergency care and a specialist on staff.

We also provide home care. 25A: What is a popular misconception people have when it comes to going to the dentist? EW: The biggest misconception is that dentistry is really painful, but given the right dentist, there is no pain. People also think the procedures are really expensive, but we accept insurance and have reasonable fees. 25A: Many people hesitate when it comes to going to the dentist. What does Shine Dental do to alleviate patient fears? EW: We offer a calming experience and our entire staff works to alleviate fears of phobic patients. Also, we have televisions in all procedure rooms and offer sedation and nitrous oxide. 25A: Why should someone come to Shine Dental? EW: We are a modern state-of-theart facility with reasonable fees dedicated to making patient care our top priority. We utilize the latest technology in sterilization. Overall, we offer an experience that will make you want to visit the dentist. 25A Take Your Workouts

Outdoors By Pam Polestino

T

aking your workouts outside can prove to be more difficult than training indoors. The inclines, and the declines, you will encounter make for a more challenging workout and a higher calorie burn. Fresh air, sunshine on your back, possible heat and or humidity, all add to you having to step up your game! It is best to have an interval workout without any equipment, or with one tool of your choice. My favorite outdoor workout is at the park with a medicine ball. Before you get started, layer up. Wear a tee or a tank, and a loose fitted light weight long sleeved top. This will protect you from sun and also help keep you warm until your body is truly warmed up. Wrist bands are a great option not to have to carry a towel, as you will sweat! Hydrate first and find your perfect park. Start with walking laps; if the park is too large, take your laps around the basketball court. After about three minutes, increase to a fast-paced walk or a jog, depending on your fitness level. When you are six minutes in, your sweat must be on! Take your medicine ball and use alternating legs, walking lunges, on one side of the court. As you lunge, press your medicine ball over your head, retract as you change legs. Once you are ready to turn around and head back to your starting point, change the ball press to a bicep curl with each walking lunge. With these two laps, you have incorporated various muscle groups. Your next exercise is down to the ground in pushup position. Place the medicine ball under one hand. After each push up, roll the ball to the other side and place the opposite hand on top for the next repetition. Make sure your abdominals are held in tight. You want to complete as 28 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

many as you can while moving slowly. When you cannot do anymore, you know your set is complete. The cardio burst is next! Keeping your hips shoulder-width apart, or a little less, squat to the floor with the medicine ball held in front of your chest. As you come up from the squat, jump up and ‘shoot’ a hoop with your ball. You can release and catch the ball, or just hold it tight, depending on your fitness level. Thirty to 45 seconds should challenge your heart rate. Since we always travel forward when we walk, it’s very important to work laterally. Start in a semi-squat position with your legs bent, ball held in front of your chest. Travel side to side, (right to left) with tiny steps, perhaps 12 feet back and forth, 20 seconds in each set. Each time you rest between sets, rotate your ball left to right in front of your body to feel the rotation in your waist. The last exercise is the most fun! Take your medicine ball and throw it from over your head, like a soccer player would throw into a game from the sideline. Throw it as far as you can on the grass or sand and sprint to get it. Walk back to your starting point. Repeat several times to give you your best burn. Walk it out, cool it down and breathe deeply. You will never look at a park the same way again!

Protein For The Pro’s

By: Lindsay Brustein Rosen, MS, RD

Getting enough protein is vital, whether you’re trying to build muscle, burn fat or develop stronger stamina. Protein is essential for the growth, maintenance and repair of all cells. Although the typical American diet provides enough protein, some sources seem to be more interesting. Instead of relying on the typical piece of grilled chicken, filet mignon or protein smoothie, let’s add some variety and flavor to our daily diets with these six delicious and nutritious protein sources:

1) 0% fat plain Greek yogurt

4) Quinoa

Greek yogurt, which has the whey strained out, is thick and creamy compared to regular yogurt. It is a very versatile protein source and can be used in place of sour cream, in smoothies, or to make dips and spreads. Greek yogurt provides a significant source of protein for a relatively small portion: a six-ounce container contains 18 grams of protein. Enjoy a fat-free container by itself, or combine it with berries, nuts and seeds for a tasty breakfast or snack.

Quinoa is an excellent source of protein (it contains eight grams of protein per cup) and is rich in dietary fiber. It contains riboflavin (which improves energy metabolism within brain and muscle cells) as well as lysine (which is essential for tissue growth and repair). Quinoa has a low glycemic index, meaning that it won’t spike your blood sugar. Make a quinoa salad with veggies and low-fat feta cheese or enjoy it alone as a side dish.

2) Flaxseed

5) Lentils

Flaxseed is a complete protein source, meaning that it contains every amino acid that your body can’t make on its own. Among its many health benefits, research suggests that flaxseed supports heart, vascular, cellular and blood sugar health. One small tablespoon contains nearly two grams of protein. Simply add a tablespoon to your breakfast cereal, yogurt, smoothie/shake or even ice cream. You can also sprinkle some ground flaxseed over soups or salads for a nutritional punch.

Lentils are packed with fiber (15 grams per cup) and protein (18 grams per cup). This combination helps keep blood sugar stable, which in turn stabilizes energy and hunger levels. Enjoy some lentil soup or sprinkle fresh Parmesan cheese over a one-cup serving of cooked lentils.

3) Edamame Edamame is similar in its protein content to animal-based protein sources, including meat and dairy. Eating half a cup of shelled green soybeans adds more than 11 grams of protein to your diet. Opt for the pre-cooked frozen versions that are still in their pods. Toss some in a Ziplock bag in the morning before work and they’ll be thawed and ready to eat for your afternoon snack.

30 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

6) Shrimp Shrimp contains roughly 60 calories and 12 grams of protein per three-ounce serving, along with a plethora of vitamins and minerals including vitamin B12, vitamin D and selenium. Aside from the health benefits, shrimp is a convenient protein source; it takes less than 10 minutes to turn frozen jumbo shrimp into a delicious meal. Toss shrimp with a little garlic and olive oil and serve alongside veggies and a serving of brown rice for a well-balanced meal.

Is Hair Loss Preventable?
 By Roberto Sedyias

I

f your dad is bald, there’s a pretty good chance you will be, too. Many just accept this as a fact of life, but not everyone. For decades now, men have tried to find a cure for hair loss, or baldness. In some cases it is pure vanity but for some, premature hair loss makes them look years older than they are and they try to hang onto their thatch for as long as possible. They aren’t alone in this search; hereditary baldness also affects women. This was a very touchy subject at one time, and women resorted to wigs and hairpieces to hide their thinning locks, but nowadays it is much more accepted and recognized. Looking at other member of your family can often determine the age and the pattern with which you may suffer hair loss. The genetic pattern in passed down and the chances of you bucking the trend are remote. The male pattern usually starts with a receding hairline, followed by a small bald patch on the crown. In complete baldness these will eventually join up and the head will be totally devoid of hair. Some only suffer the receding and general thinning, still keeping a reasonable amount of hair. If they have just a small amount of hair remaining, many men choose to shave their heads, as that looks better than a few tufts and a bald patch. Women’s hair tends to thin all over and the scalp may become visible. There are many products on the market that claim to stop hair loss in its tracks and make amazing claims. The sad fact is that many of these are complete scams and a big waste of time and money. There are now prescription medications available but many people will see little or no results.

32 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Non-hereditary hair loss is a whole different ball game. If you start losing your hair, there is a reason for it. Far and away the most common reason for this type of hair loss is a condition known as alopecia. There are many theories as for why one should suddenly have small, bald patches that are tender to the touch. It can be hereditary, it could be caused by stress or lifestyle, but there is still no scientific proof as to the actual cause. It is widely thought to be a malfunction in the autoimmune system, in which the body attacks its own hair follicles, resulting in hair growth being stunted or stopped altogether. Thankfully, there is a wide range of creams and applications that can stop alopecia from progressing. Your doctor will advise you on the ones that are best for you and often a combination of medications will be prescribed. Lifestyle can play a major part in the health of our hair. Many people now walk around with a natural shine to their hair; this could be due to smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet or something as seemingly innocuous as hair products. Perming, dying, hair spray, gels, mousses, styling aids and extensions can all severely damage our hair in the long run. It is no coincidence that in every drug store there is an array of supplements purely for hair and nails. These are the two areas that first show signs of an unhealthy lifestyle. Make the most of your crowning glory. No one really knows how long he or she will have it, so it makes a lot of sense to take care of our hair while it is at its best!

Cosmetic Surgery For Men: Luxury or Necessity? By Gerald A. Acker, MD

I have now done more than 18,000 operations. While cosmetic surgery for women is readily accepted, surgery for men is now a rapidly growing sector of my practice. Facial plastic surgery for men is profoundly different than for women. Men do not use makeup, they have short hair, have beard patterns and do not tolerate visible scars or hairline elevation. Men do not want to be beautiful. They do want to be strong, powerful and youthful. I have operated on and repaired executives, entertainers, plastic surgeons and world class athletes. These patients, and almost all my patients, have surgery to enhance or maintain their personal, social or occupational relations. For example, I know of a 60-year-old man (who looks 40), who is in a sustained relationship with a 28-year-old. In this patient’s upper facial procedure, the hairline moved down, thereby simulating the result of thousands of hair transplants, while lifting the face simultaneously. Additionally, patients look to surgery to repair a true and perceptible deformity or injury. This category includes broken, twisted noses and facial scarring. Surgery on such defects is generally considered reconstructive and is thereby covered by insurance. Paramount to male surgery is safety, as livelihood and social position are so intertwined with appearance. Complications are poorly tolerated and need to be averted. I do all major surgery in-hospital with an anesthesiologist and a pre-op medical workup. I use no bandages, expect little to no pain or bruising and afford patients the comfort and safety of an overnight stay. All patients are seen before discharge. A hospital also provides optimal oversight and security for patient care. I feel responsible and am available to every patient, as I do with all my surgeries. Men want surgery to be predictable and planned, and expect it to be permanent to semi-permanent. Many of the techniques that I have evolved come from my training as a cancer surgeon and as an art historian. There are many operations that are permanent and truly do last forever. This is in contradiction to fillers or Botox, which are impermanent

and require continued re-treatment. Most importantly, men and women must never look operated on, robotic, taut or windblown. As an artist and surgeon, I try to recreate the strength, vitality and qualities of a human being as they were at their best. Body surgery for men entails enhancing the male physique. Traditionally this involves reducing or changing volumes of the torso, chest and flanks to define the male silhouette. Muscle mass has become particularly compelling with the advent of male underwear and swimsuit models. The downtime for these procedures is extremely brief with many patients returning to work after a weekend. Surgery after massive weight loss also falls into this category, with recovery dependent on the magnitude of surgery. It is extremely gratifying as a cosmetic surgeon to relate to my patients’ surgery, whether it is supportive, enhancive, additive or reductive. The real rewards of surgery are the tangible career advances and interpersonal changes of these patients in a youth-oriented and appearance-driven society. Dr. Acker graduated Columbia College Summa Cum Laude and John Hopkins Medical School – Phi Beta Kappa. He continued surgical training at the John Hopkins Hospital, Chief Residence at the Mt. Sinai Hospital and Chief Residence in Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital University of Pennsylvania. During this time he did fellowship at the Cancer Center of the National Institute of Health and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Acker is double boarded. He has been Chief and Director of three departments of plastic surgery in New York extending over twenty years. In 2001 Dr. Acker’s Team won the first Paragon award as the Best Doctor/PA team in the United States. Dr Acker has been voted as one of the leading Doctors of the world by the International association of Plastic Surgeons. He has also won the Good Samaritan Award from the American police Hall of Fame.

Nestled deep within Sands Point, lies a modern-day estate, reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era...

Sands Point, NY Sands Point, located on the northernmost tip of Port Washington, is known for its beauty and classic estates. It is one of the most coveted pieces of real estate on the Gold Coast of Long Island. Until recently known mostly to those who live nearby, as well as F. Scott Fitzgerald fans, a resurgence of interest has developed in the area due to the hype surrounding the remake of The Great Gatsby. The movie

34 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

depicts Sands Point, Fitzgerald’s East Egg, as a town of “established money” that “glittered along the water.” Nestled deep within Sands Point stands a modern-day estate, reminiscent of the Gatsby era. Situated on two acres overlooking Long Island Sound, the property mixes the elegance of yesterday with the convenience of today.

Featured on NBC-TV’s Open House, this estate has been recognized as one of the most beautifully designed homes on the North Shore of Long Island. Entering the rotunda, which serves as the central hub of the main floor, you can’t help but notice the attention to detail the architect has included. The combination of open spaces and

the warmth of wood envelopes you with a feeling of welcome. Looking up as far as the eye can see, you are treated to open space that leads to a circular tray ceiling with a central domed skylight. All this is outlined in wood. This theme continues throughout the room. Inlaid and wood floors take the eye to every corner of the room while the use of molding around the doors leads you to a new space. Included on the main floor are the living room and formal dining room situated off the den, each with fireplaces, and a luxuriously appointed eat-in kitchen. A full bathroom and additional powder room can also be found on this floor.

Cross the room from the front door and ascend the staircase, which splits to either side, giving you a choice of direction. Mirroring the floor plan of the main floor, the rooms on this level are situated off the balcony surrounding the rotunda. In addition to the master suite, three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, each sharing the magnificent water view, circle the area. The master bedroom, with its high, spacious ceiling in keeping with the architect’s concept, continues the feeling of openness, which is further enhanced by a terrace that offers a place to just relax and enjoy the spectacular view. Continue up one more level, through a circular staircase, to an open space and even airier feel. It can be left as is, for the minimalist, or completed to your liking. Head down to the finished basement for some recreation in the fully equipped home theater or a workout in the home gym. Visitors can have their privacy as well. The two-bedroom, two-bath private quarters are the perfect place for your guests to unwind. Built in 1999, the architect felt that it was important to build for the future by ‘going green.’ Incorporating solar power through Millen technology, the builder used six-zone heating and automated lighting, for a perfect mix of beauty and brains. The home is as stunning outdoors as it is within. Relax and enjoy the view from the slate patio or take a dip in the heated, in-ground pool, complete with its own waterfall. Surrounded by lush greenery and a view of the Long Island Sound, it’s easy to forget you are not on vacation but are settled in your own home, sweet home.

On top of the world. A Private Tour of Beacon Court’s Penthouse By Chase Backer. Photography by Jason Feinberg

New York City is home to the largest skyscrapers in the world. Nestled between midtown’s 58th and 59th streets is the newly built Beacon Court, with some of the most incredible views of the Big Apple from the penthouse, if you’re lucky enough to live there. In Pebble Beach last summer cruising with Rolls Royce, I was fortunate to meet Michael Fux, a worldrenowned entrepreneur and serious car aficionado. Our shared passion for automobiles, as well as design and elegance, offered me the opportunity to discover more about his luxurious lifestyle when he invited me to visit his apartment in Beacon Court. Arriving at the building, I was struck with a feeling of ultimate grandeur. Michael met me with a warm smile and gave me a tour of his penthouse apartment. Occupying a half-floor of the building, the space immediately takes you aback with the panoramic views that only Manhattan can offer. Every room is basked in white with natural light reflecting from the floors, creating a work of art in itself. Sculptures, as modern as the apartment, provide subtle accents of color. It was like being in a museum! Everything from the exceptional pieces of art to the pristine layout of the exquisite home was simply breathtaking. Each room had incredible views of the city skyline, Hudson and East rivers, Long 46 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Island and New Jersey. We overlooked New York City in all of its beauty. “I can be anywhere in the city and see the building,” says Fux. “Sometimes at night, I leave a blue light on in the bedroom and I can quickly spot the apartment.” From floor to ceiling, the bedroom offers panoramic views of the city. Michael’s passion for living speaks through the possessions he has acquired throughout the world, such as his exotic car collection and rare works of art. He has residences that are located in New Jersey, Florida, Carolina, the West Coast and the East Coast. I have a feeling his favorite place is New York City. June 2013 | 47

Golfing In and Around The Hamptons A Look at the Links Out East By Victoria Caruso

The view from the Sebonack Golf Club’s 2nd Hole.

T

he Hamptons offer pristine beaches, quaint shops and designer boutiques, antique stores, wineries and four-star dining. But for those who like to spend their time on the back nine, Long Island’s East End is a golfer’s paradise with close to 20 golf clubs – private and public courses – to choose from.

But in the end what really counts is the course itself and its no wonder that several have received national recognition. Among them are the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, its neighbor National Golf Links of America, both in Southampton, and the Maidstone Golf Club in East Hampton, which were all established in the late 1800s.

For those seeking to join an elite, private club, the options are as vast as the courses themselves. In fact, from Westhampton to Montauk on the South and Greenport/Shelter Island on the North, the Hamptons are home to some of the oldest golf courses in the United States … and the world.

All three of these members-only clubs have consistently been ranked as top courses in both the United States and the World. Additionally, the two Southampton clubs have hosted numerous national tournaments, with Shinnecock set to host the 2018 U.S. Open and the National on tap to host this year’s Walker Cup.

Over the years, many private clubs have spent millions to completely rebuild or completely revitalize their clubhouses into state-of-the-art social centers that caterer to both female and male members of all ages. Others have added five-star dining facilities that can host social events, broadened their services to become more family-oriented or expanded up amenities such as offering electric golf carts, caddies and 9th-hole refreshment stations.

In recent years, newer clubs such as The Bridge and the Atlantic Golf Course have also been receiving attention with both Bridgehampton clubs recognized as top U.S. and New York courses by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine. Additionally, the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, which opened in 2006, earned a place on Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Golf Courses in America” and Golfweek’s “100 Best Modern Courses.”

48 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Located between Shinnecock Hills and the National, Sebonack’s course features holes that offer panoramic views of Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond.

the number of these courses decreases the farther east a player heads, finding a beautiful, challenging and well-maintained course is not impossible. In fact, Island’s End Golf & Country Club in Greenport, the Shelter Island Country Club, the Sag Harbor Golf Course, the Calverton Links Golf Course, Poxabogue Golf Center in Wainscott and Riverhead’s Indian Island Country Club or Cherry Creek courses are all open to the public. And let’s not forget the 18-hole municipal Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course. Operated by New York State’s Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, “The Downs” has been named one of “America’s Best Public-Access Courses” and “America’s 100 Best Courses for $100 or Less” by Golfweek and Golf magazines, respectively. The course’s greens are small, mostly elevated and well bunkered, the fairways are ample in width but the rough is penal and the surrounding bramble attracts golf balls, from which they never return.

© Golf Shots Unlimited 2006 An aeriel shot of the 4th hole at the Quogue Field Club

Interestingly, some of the earliest and recognized private clubs on Long Island were not initially intended to be golf courses. Such was the case with the nationally ranked Maidstone Golf Club, which was originally established as a tennis and bath club. Today, it remains one of the only top ranked Long Island courses set on the ocean, offering its members the option of lounging on the beach, hitting the courts or playing a round on one of its two recognized courses.

According to Kevin Smith, Head Golf Professional at ‘The Downs,’ The course plays up to eight percent longer than it’s stated yardage due to the ever-changing wind. “With the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound, conditions are constantly changing throughout the day, your round or even during the play of a hole,” Smith said, adding that the course is also naturally beautiful and is home to many forms of wildlife such as deer, fox and wild turkey. “As someone who has played many of the top courses in the world, I always compare them to ‘The Downs’ and without a doubt she holds her own and surpasses most all of them in challenge and beauty,” said Smith. “All of this and, yet, very affordably priced. It’s a course that you can never get tired of playing.”

Long Island’s East End is also home to the Quogue Field Club (QFC), a picturesque, old-fashioned links-style 9-hole course that consists of front and back nine tee locations in order to play the loop twice for 18 holes. The course, which opened for play in 1901, was designed by Scotsman R.B. Wilson – who learned club making from Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews in Scotland and served as golf professional and greenskeeper at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in 1896 and 1897. “Unlike so many modern era courses, the QFC course accommodates all levels of player,” said QFC member and 23-time Men’s Club Champion Michael Confort. “Beginners, juniors and high handicappers enjoy no measurable forced carries from tee to fairway and all but a couple of the putting surfaces are open in front. The single digit player is challenged by four par fours over 400 yards, water on six holes and out of bounds on 10 holes.” Additionally, said Confort, “The changing winds on eastern Long Island give the course many different looks, but almost always send the golfer home with a smile on his face.” For those who aren’t in the market to join a private club, golfing at one of the East Ends public or municipal courses is always an option. Although

The 18-Hole municipal Montauk Downs Golf Course has been named one of among America’s best courses

Whether you’re playing on a public course for the day or lucky enough to become a member of a private club – or just tag along with someone who is – one thing is for sure; some of the best greens can be found in and around the Hamptons. Fair winds and following seas, no matter what the weather By Jason Feinberg

Azimut 48 Flybridge

I

grew up on the water and have always had a sweet spot for boats. I’ve piloted or owned small open bow riders, cabin cruisers and 50-foot yachts. I still even operate a fireboat from time to time. So I’ve been in a lot of different sea conditions. But today was special. Today, I was being treated to a private ride on one of the most luxurious production yachts being built today – the Azimut Flybridge 48. I headed over to MarineMax in Huntington to board the modest 48. To say its sleek lines and European styling were impressive is an

50 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

understatement. With Captain Mike Lennon at the upper helm, we headed out. It was a fairly brisk, windy day, more like February than May, but any concerns I had about getting wet and cold were unwarranted. As soon as we cleared the channel, I expected to hear the roar of the engines as Mike throttled up and the bow rose in a manner I found oddly similar to a breaching whale. But to my surprise, there was hardly any sound difference from when the engine was idling. This, I was told, is due to the Azimut’s submerged exhaust. The wind was out of the north and we were headed straight into it. The mighty 48 didn’t bounce even

slightly, not even a cross spray to the flying bridge, despite the fact that the Seakeeper wasn’t turned on. The Seakeeper is essentially a counterbalancing system that stabilizes the motion of the yacht, allowing it to sit virtually still in the water. If it wasn’t needed this day, I can’t imagine the sea conditions the Aziumt can endure with its help. On our way back to the marina, we headed below where Mike took control of the interior lower helm. This is the point where you might have difficulty distinguishing the difference between a luxury yacht and a luxury home. The appointments in the three-cabin lower deck are rich in woods and leather and beautifully crafted. I must say, I have friends living in New York City apartments with not as much room as the 48. The living quarters include a galley, dining area, salon and sleeping quarters, single or double occupancy. The 2013 Flybridge 48 sleeps eight comfortably … much more comfortably than that NYC apartment. Back on land, I spoke with Andrew Schneider, US brand manager for Azimut Yachts at MarineMax. “You get hooked on Azimut,” he said, between a bombardment of phone calls. “Sorry, that was a client … Sorry, that was another client.” From the conversations I overheard, I could swear the calls were from family or close friends. It’s that style of relationship that made it easy to understand why 66 percent of Schneider’s customers return and that’s not a bad figure when you are talking about yachts in the millions of dollar range. It also makes sense why MarineMax has one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the industry. In fact the company, which has a huge support network throughout the east coast, prides itself on its customer relationships. Each question I asked about Azimut was followed with, “Oh let me show you this trip” and Schneider would flip through scores of photos on his computer and phone to show me photo after photo of group vacations that the company organizes with their customers. “This couple has a 55S, this

one a 64Fly. This man is building an 80.” It was like the proud doctor showing you the babies he’s delivered. It was easy to see that this is Schneider’s passion and the core of what the MarineMax team does for its clientele. They are with you every step of the way. Azimut has a number of different models. The Flybridge and S collections start at 40 feet and go up to 100+ on the Flybridge and 86 on the S. Both have sleek European styling with a sporty feel adding to their elegance. The Magellano collection has a more modest design with an almost vertical bow and an entirely different styling than its cousins. The most popular in the lineup are the 55S and 64 Flybridge. But please don’t let that deter you from that 80-footer you’re dreaming of. The appointments are plentiful. From outdoor grilling and dining areas to big screen TVs and surround sound, as I noted earlier, it becomes hard to distinguish between the yacht interiors and some homes. Even with no boating experience, a customer is fully at ease with the experienced staff at MarineMax, who are there to guide you through all the steps. After all, this isn’t like buying a car. It’s essentially a floating home that can cruise at about 25 knots (28 mph) with some of the most advanced technology available on today’s watercraft. But once you toss the lines and head out to sea, you’re in your own world with your own destination. In August, Azimut owners will set sail and set course to Newport, Rhode Island for the 2013 MarineMax/Azimut Newport Gala. This exclusive four-day annual event is strictly by invitation only and is the perfect opportunity for Andrew Schneider to add to his photo gallery of folks who may have started out as customers but have grown into extended family and friends. or more than half a century, there’s one name that has become synonymous with luxury automobiles on Long Island — Rallye Motors. Celebrating its 55th year in business, Rallye Motor Group has expanded in recent years to include a variety of top luxury brands, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Acura and Lexus.

worked for more than 30 years in all aspects of the car business. He believes the company offers customers a truly unique experience. “When you purchase a car from Rallye Motors, you’re purchasing a vehicle from somebody who cares about you as an individual. It’s not just about selling a car. Cars we can replace, but customers we can’t replace.”

staff’s expertise in the business provides the kind of service that meets the high standards set by Mercedes-Benz. From the convenient tech wizard station on premises to the 24-houra-day road collision center in Carle Place, all Rallye’s technicians receive ongoing MercedesBenz factory training in the latest repair techniques on the most recent models.

On May 8, 1958, the Rallye Motor Group first opened its doors for business in Glen Cove. Owners and founders Peter Terian and George Moss built the company based on the belief that customer satisfaction and excellence are of the utmost importance. President and CEO Joseph Stanco, who has worked for Rallye Motor Group for 32 years, said the company has remained true to the vision of its founders. “It’s all about customer service. As the leader in the luxury brand on the North Shore for 55 years, our philosophy is [that] the manufacturer makes the car, but Rallye Motors makes the difference,” he explained.

What many people may not know is that Mercedes-Benz is the original automobile maker with a legacy in innovative style and safety that dates back nearly128 years, noted Klipstein. Earlier this year, the company came out with an initiative called “Customer One,” which is focused on providing premier customer service and satisfaction. “Customers are demanding. They expect the best and we understand that and we do everything we can to fulfill and exceed their expectations,” he said.

With upcoming celebrations to honor the dealership’s milestone birthday, customers are welcome to visit the showroom to experience the Customer One service for themselves, Stanco said. “On behalf of all our staff, we would like to thank each and every one of you who has supported us throughout our history and we look forward to another prosperous 55 years.”

ankind’s beginnings were primitive and yet, they too included steak. Flash forward to the 21st century and what is one of a man’s quintessential summer activities? The barbeque, and more specifically, grilling up steaks. What makes a steak so fabulous? The cut, the way it’s cooked and the seasoning or marinade, up to you. The steak is defined by the cut, where it is from on the animal; there’s the Delmonico or Rib Eye, the Loin, Filet, or T-Bone, and last but not least, the Skirt steak. Each cut of meat is prepared differently and grilled for different periods of time. As a rule, a steak which is 1 inch thick is grilled 2-3 minutes on each side if you like it rare. Add another minute for medium, and 2 extra minutes for well done. As for the grill, begin by preheating it on the medium/high setting for

56 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

about 12 minutes. Brush the steak with some oil then season just before cooking with salt and pepper so that the juices don’t get drawn out by the salt. Follow the grilling guidelines above based on thickness. A thermometer is a great investment and the rules are simple; rare steak should have an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, medium steak should register at 155 degrees, and a well done steak should measure 170 degrees. The Filet Mignon is tender, lean, and great with a sauce; the grill only enhances it further. Rib eye takes well to the grill and is higher in fat content. The cuts are naturally larger as well. Skirt Steak is a personal favorite of mine. The fat adds flavor, and it is more price friendly. The Porterhouse is the best of two steaks combined; a larger filet with a full strip on the bone. It’s one of the more popular sharing steaks and while it is pricier, it’s worth it. Here are some of my favorite recipes.

2 garlic cloves sliced 1 tablespoon rosemary leaves 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt Freshly ground pepper

1/3 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup olive oil 1/3 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder 3 Tbsp dried basil 1 1/2 Tbsp dried parsley flakes 1 tsp ground white pepper 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp minced garlic

Combine all ingredients. Pour marinade over meat. Cover, and refrigerate for up to 8 hours. Cook meat as desired.

1. In a blender, combine the garlic, rosemary, oregano, mustard and vinegar and puree until the garlic is minced. With the machine on, gradually add the oil and blend until creamy. Season lightly with salt and pepper. 2. Add the meat to a glass or ceramic baking dish and pour all but 1/4 cup of the vinaigrette on top; turn the meat to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours.

3. Light a grill and oil the grates. Remove the steak from the marinade,

letting the excess drip off. Season with salt and pepper. Grill the steak over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until lightly charred and an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 125°, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer the steak to a carving board and let rest for 5 minutes. Thinly slice the meat against the grain and serve, passing the remaining vinaigrette at the table. Great sides for steak include a lettuce wedge salad with bacon and gorgonzola, an heirloom tomato salad with evoo and fresh herbs, cream or sautÊed spinach, jumbo Idaho baked potatoes with all the fixings. On Long Island’s North Fork, you can enjoy both together. First-class wineries in the East End offer relaxing and entertaining opportunities for you and your four-legged friends. These wineries offer vineyard dog walks and allow dogs inside the tasting room and outdoor areas. Pooches get plenty of attention as you attend to you palate. Even though your dog might not help you decide which bottles to purchase, you can rest assured your wine-tasting experience will be a dog-gone delight! Here are the five best dog-friendly wineries, listed from west to east.

Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard The Rubin family started the Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard (BHFV) in 2007, the same year they started rescuing unwanted horses. BHFV provides a great outdoor setting with plenty of shade and seating and offers tours to see the horses. On weekends, expect to find a live band entertaining visitors. Friendly dogs are allowed to join the tours so long as they are leashed. Make sure to try the gold-medal-winning Riesling. www.baitinghollowfarmvineyard.com 2114 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY

Palmer Vineyards Adirondack chairs overlooking acres of vineyards provide a pictureperfect escape. The tasting house of one of the longest running wineries in Long Island provides a warm atmosphere for you and your dog. Staff members greet you and your pup with smiles and you can enjoy their popular wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Duck Walk Vineyards This eco-friendly vineyard is ideal for a Sunday morning wine-tasting. Although dogs are expected to stay on leash in the tasting room, no rules seem to apply for friendly dogs wanting to explore the large outdoor space. Duck Walk uses geothermal energy for heating and cooling, pumping well water from deep beneath the vineyards, a zero-emissions system that has reduced their carbon footprint. www.duckwalk.com 44535 Main Road, Southold, NY

Croteaux Vineyards You will not find a more enchanting winery in North Fork than the Frenchowned Croteaux Vineyards that specializes in dry and fruity rosÊ wines. The tasting barn and garden provide an idyllic setting overlooking the vineyards. While the winery is dog-friendly, pooches must be leashed at all times and near their owners, and must get along with Sergeant. A night to remember with superb italian fare

talian cuisine is characterized by its extreme simplicity and noted for its regional diversity and abundance of difference in taste. It is known to be one of the most popular cuisines in the world. Needless to say, Huntington, the restaurant mecca of Long Island, is overflowing with these ‘pasta and sauce’ spots. Opening a new Italian restaurant on an Island full of them is a precarious business and the competition is fierce. As the Italian saying goes, ‘Piatto ricco, mi ci ficco,’ meaning ‘Rich plate, I dive in it.’ Some of the most popular, longest-running Italian restaurants will contest to this: good food with reasonable prices equals success. La Notte in Huntington Village uses this philosophy and has recently carved its name onto the culinary landscape. Opened in November of 2012, this welcoming spot takes the address of the former Bel Posto, Tello and Mangiamo, not forgetting Orlando’s, a name most revered in the world of Italian cuisine. Owner Joseph Competiello, a Queens native, is a well-established veteran of the restaurant

business. Working with his father for nearly 30 years at their restaurant in Forest Hills, Joseph was taught everything he needed to know before branching out on his own. The skill sets he learned over the years have proved to be invaluable to the success of his own business. For Joseph, it is not just a job; it is a passion. His philosophy is simple: give customers the best service and the best quality at a fair price. Joseph is very much concerned about the happiness of his guests and continues to put them first. He exhibits an honest interest and loyalty that is hard to find in this competitive industry. Invoking images of Antonioni’s 1961 Italian film La Notte, this charming spot immerses its diners in a striking production of drama with rich visuals. Behind its white stucco exterior is a warm, bi-level dining area framed with exposed brick walls and dark wood that creates a rustic look to complement the cuisine. The convivial bar is set beneath a painted night sky, perfect for a romantic rendezvous. La Notte’s diverse menu is a true reflection of Competiello’s

deep experience and love for traditional Italian cuisine. Blending old world favorites with contemporary twists makes for an exceptional dining experience. Every table is served fresh Italian bread paired with olive oil for dipping. The night we dined, starters included clams oreganata and shrimps La Notte followed by traditional spaghetti with white clam sauce. A refreshing salad of radicchio and mild onions was crisp and cleansing to the palate. Entrees included a fragrant grilled Branzino fish and double cut pork chops, which were moist and flavorful. Desserts completing the meal were a creamy cheesecake and decadent chocolate mousse cake. La Notte impressed on all levels. It was a night worth remembering.

The Object of Gatsby’s Desire: Why Carey Mulligan Needed to Play this Role

udiences around the world lined up to witness the incredible visual experience that is Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby on opening weekend. One of the most hyped movies of the year, Gatsby promised a dazzling display of wealth, a haunting and moving soundtrack, and of course – an epic performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. However, not all critics are currently in agreement that the movie delivered on all counts – some believe the movie did not do justice to

64 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

the original novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald (which has been a difficult task for other adaptations in the past). Despite a mix of reviews regarding the adaptation of the novel, the performances, the casting, etc. – the movie is undeniably a spectacle. If you want a glance into what affluent life was like in the 20s set in Long Island, love intricate costumes, lavish displays of wealth, glittery parties and a compelling soundtrack, this movie promises to dazzle on all fronts. While most of the attention is (understandably) on Leonardo DiCaprio,

who arguably emulates the F. Scott Fitzgerald character as well as audiences expected him to, some of the other players are certainly worth being recognized, as well – specifically Carrie Mulligan, who seemed to be one of the most convincing players of the movie’s cast. For those who are fans of the book, most know Daisy as the object of Gatsby’s affection who, despite a promise to wait for Gatsby after the war, married somebody else: a powerful and wealthy man, and spends her days constantly masking her marriage’s imperfections, her innate character flaws and her sardonic nature. There are plenty of Hollywood actresses that come to mind when you think of a glamorous, beautiful and troubled character who is also worthy of many men’s desires, but Carey Mulligan leverages her performance in Gatsby to prove that she was indeed the right choice. Not only is she extremely beautiful, but she possesses that subtle and vulnerable quality that lends itself well to the role of Daisy.

While Mulligan worked consistently throughout the years, 2009 was the year when movie audiences realized this actress was here to stay. Her role in An Education brought her Oscar recognition, when she was nominated in 2010 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. Her role as Jenny, a teenager whose life changes when she meets a man twice her age, had the industry realizing that Mulligan was a force to be reckoned with, and the roles began flowing in more frequently. Yet again, Mulligan was playing the object of desire for a more powerful man. In this case, a dishonest playboy who helped her discover her sense of self in this coming-of-age film. Mulligan has certainly proved that she is able to play the vulnerable girl well. She also has proven that she possesses that certain quality that makes charismatic and/or powerful men fall in love with her in the

PatrickMcmullan.com

What many people don’t necessarily realize is that her years in the industry leading up to Gatsby were preparing Mulligan for the role – audiences have seen her acting ability over the years in a number of acclaimed roles. English-born, Carey appeared in a number of British TV before diving into the American acting scene on Broadway. Her debut in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull began to get her noticed. She played the character of Nina, an aspiring young actress. Critics noted Mulligan’s liveliness and vulnerability, as she was playing the object of desire for multiple characters in the play. It seemed as though her role in the play was a precursor for what was to come in the Great Gatsby.

June 2013 | 65

roles that she plays. Her subtle ways – from her beauty to her ability to subtly portray the complexity of characters while also able to emote intense feelings, made her the perfect actress for Fitzgerald’s Daisy. Such qualities are exactly why a character like Gatsby – despite being surrounded by wealth and women – would be so drawn to her. She has the ability to appear externally perfect, while also being very troubled internally and somewhat manipulative. It’s a depth of character that is extremely difficult to portray, and Mulligan deserves credit for doing so. Gatsby is just yet another role as Carey Mulligan moves closer and closer toward total stardom. Despite critics’ and audiences’ opinions about the movie, it’s difficult to deny her the credit that comes with portraying such a complex character that has critically flopped in previous attempts by actresses who have played her. Mulligan’s Daisy dazzles in her own right, and justifies why a character as “great” as Gatsby would desire her as strongly as he does. 66 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

Baz Luhrmann Gatsby Director

By Michele and Jeff Krasner Mark Anthony Luhrmann, better known as Baz, is from what’s commonly known as the land down under. The Australian filmmaker has been making movies from behind the camera since the 1980s, following a short stint as an actor. Baz grew up in a family with a father who owned a petrol station and a small movie theater. Inspired at an early age, Baz knew what he wanted in life. He has produced, directed and written several screenplays, including Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge (which was nominated for an Academy Award for best picture in 2002) and Australia. Baz tends to cast many of the same actors in his projects, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicole Kidman and John Leguizamo. At 50 years old, Baz doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. His latest film, The Great Gatsby, opened nationally on May10 and will most likely be one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. We sat down with Baz at a screening of Gatsby in Port Washington, N.Y., on Long Island’s Gold Coast, just a stone’s throw from Jay Gatsby’s playground, as written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

MK (Michele Krasner): Baz, what actually inspired you take on Gatsby again? BL (Baz Luhrmann): I was totally inspired by the book, not the movie of 1974, besides the fact that I grew up watching many movies, partly because my father owned a small theater. MK: How much did Leo (DiCaprio) mature as an actor since you directed him in Romeo + Juliet 17 years ago? BL: Leo was a boy at the time and grew into an accomplished actor not only as a man but as a partner. MK: What was the reason for not shooting the movie on Long Island, where the story actually takes place? BL: At the time securing film permits at certain locations were difficult because another movie was being shot at some locations. We decided to shoot on location in Australia at places that almost replicated the Gold Coast mansions. This article was made possible by Rick Eberle, publicist for the Great Neck Film Festival.

erhaps the most lavish parties ever held in the pages of American literature were the galas Jay Gatsby threw at his estate on Long Island's North Shore. It was the Gold Coast when it glittered, a time of elegance and splendor, gilded ceilings, 300-foot yachts, and 100-room castles surrounded by gardens to rival those at Versailles. The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, made the young F. Scott Fitzgerald world famous. His classic novel of the jazz age described the fabled North Shore of Long Island at the height of this colorful era. Legends have grown about the extravagances and lifestyles of the rich and famous. At the turn of the last century, vast fortunes were made by the Vanderbilts, Astors, Woolworths and Morgans, which led to an architectural phenomenon unparalleled in our country's history, if not that of the world. From Great Neck to Huntington over 600 massive estates were constructed along with the trappings of the very wealthy. Enormous glass playhouses boasting indoor tennis courts, Olympic-sized swimming pools, bowling alleys, squash courts, even a gambling casino or two were built to keep guests entertained.

Prohibition was in full swing, along with gangsters, speakeasies, rumrunning and immorality. The New York Times noted, "Gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession." Prohibition was a dumb idea, as it made overnight millionaires of the likes of Al Capone, Dutch Schultz, Lucky Luciano and dozens of other sociopaths who thought nothing of gunning down anyone who got in their way. The thugs and rumrunners were necessary to keep the bubbly flowing so that no mansion party ever went dry. As a backup, most estates had their own stills in the basement. What many of us were never told when we first read Fitzgerald's book was that it was not a work of fiction, but based on real stories and real people, whose names are simply changed. The mansions and other locations, while long gone, were a part of our local landscape. June 2013 | 69

six parties on any given weekend. These galas played out in his most famous novel: "There was music from my neighbor's house throughout the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars. People were not invited - they got into their automobiles, and somehow ended up at Gatsby's door. Once there, they conducted themselves according to the rules of behavior associated with amusement parks." --- F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925 Beacon Towers, a huge Feudal castle that stood on a bluff overlooking the Sound in Sands Point, was in reality built by Alva Vanderbilt. Fitzgerald was inspired by its size and used it as the setting for his main character's house. In the opening of his book he states: "The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard - it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side. It was Gatsby's house." Beacon Towers was bulldozed during the Second World War, but Daisy's sprawling white colonial overlooking the bay survived the years until sadly it was demolished only last year. Its name was Land's End and Fitzgerald had visited there often.

Fitzgerald, who lived in a grey stucco mansion at 6 Gateway Drive in Great Neck, was at the very hub of all that was going on at the time. His neighbors included Ring Lardner, Alva Vanderbilt, the Guggenheims and the Harrimans. There were also Broadway and screen legends: Eddie Cantor, Irving Berlin, Al Jolson and Groucho Marks. The parties held along the Sound were huge extravagant affairs. Our local Mrs. Bayard Swope described them as "an absolutely seething bordello of interesting people." The most celebrated bash was hosted by Clarence Mackay at Harbor Hill, at a cost of nearly $1 million. Nearly 2,000 guests came to honor the future King of England, then the Prince of Wales, and to dance the night away to Paul Whiteman's orchestra. Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda were considered the golden couple and often attended five or 70 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

So who was the real Jay Gatsby? During the '20s there was a well-known bootlegger who sold booze in his chain of drug stores in Great Neck. His name was Max Gerlach, known to call everyone he met "Old Sport." The character of Daisy was believed to have been Fitzgerald's own wife Zelda. She had come from a very wealthy Southern family and was known to drive recklessly when intoxicated. Meyer Wolfsheim was really Arnold Rothstein, a successful gambler and racketeer who had ties with Dutch Schultz and other shady characters. Rothstein wore a pair of human molars as cufflinks and was famous for having fixed the World Series in 1919. Daisy's golf-cheating friend Jordan Baker was based on the life of Edith Cummings, the 1923 Woman's Golf Champion.

The filming of those dazzling party scenes, while lasting only minutes on film went on for two months, throughout the entire summer of '72. It was stiflingly hot and it rained constantly, turning the water in the huge reflecting pool green. The crew had to stop every few hours to clean out the algae and to dump gallons and gallons of Clorox in to keep the water clear. The costumes worn by all the extras were vintage. I had brought several of my own that had been rescued from the old mansions when they were being bulldozed during the '60s. One night when the music got wild, some of us, out of boredom, began to drink real champagne we smuggled in instead of the ginger ale we had been served for weeks on end. Caught up in the moment, the director suddenly yelled for some of us to jump in the pool. About 20 extras danced and splashed in the water, not realizing it was filled with Clorox. Within minutes, the antique tulle silk dresses began to dissolve along with the fragile sequins that melted on the spot. Several of the girls were suddenly standing there in their bras and

The Roaring 20’s came back to life this May as Baz Lurhmann’s vision of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cary Mulligan was finally released in theaters. The new version, was filmed entirely in Austraila, which is a far stretch from Long Island. The scenic artists were able to create the original Beacon Towers on an even larger scale, using old photographs. But one has to wonder. instead of fox hunting, which was one of the mainstays of social life here on Long Island, did they chase kangaroos? Note: This article originally ran in our Autumn 2012 issue in anticipation of The Great Gatsby’s original release date.

RIDE A Prestigious Ride Back in Time with Packard and Madison Avenue Limo In the 1920s, America was in an economic boom and every car, mansion and party was more magnificent than the next. The Packard Corporation produced some of the finest and most prestigious cars of the day and while they are a rarity now, you can rent a vintage 1936 Packard from Madison Avenue Limo. This pioneering car intended for millionaires, celebrities and affluent aristocrats alike was the one of the first of its kind featuring a V12 engine and a square body that had a look of solid elegance. Out of production since the 1950s, the Packard outlasted most of its early contemporaries and left a host of classic cars for collectors. “Ask the man who owns one” was the fitting slogan for this limited-produced automobile, and the Packard is still the one for those who truly want to make an impression. www.madisonavenuelimo.com

READ Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern

3

Lovers of great American literature have undoubtedly read all of Fitzgerald’s and Hemingway’s works by now. There have been numerous recounts of the Roaring ’20s, the Jazz Age and the Modern Age, but it’s rare you’ll find a book as entertaining as this. Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern by Joshua Zeitz whisks us from the Alabama country club where Zelda Sayre first caught the eye of F. Scott Fitzgerald to Muncie, Indiana, where would-be flappers begged their mothers for silk stockings, to the Manhattan speakeasies where patrons partied ’til daybreak. This is the story of America’s first sexual revolution, its first merchants of cool, its first celebrities and its most sparkling advertisement for the right to pursue happiness. A great book takes you places and Zeitz's energetic writing really brings to life this exuberant era, so much so that if you close your eyes you can almost imagine that you’re really there. $12.99 www.barnesandnoble.com

Fitzgerald endeavored to earn a solid literary reputation but his playboy image impeded the proper assessment of his work. Not the case here with Jonathan Simon, aka DJ Gatsby, who goes by this moniker to not only capture an air of elegance that he brings in professionalism to his clients, but also to the deep passion he has for the turntables. He is classically debonair, goodlooking, popular and knows what a distinguished crowd wants and that’s just why you’ll want him for your next soiree. Hailing from Great Neck, Simon has been spinning for several years now, from private parties to weddings and celebrity and charity events. He has worked with venues such as The Gates, Hudson Terrace. M2 Lounge and The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and companies such as Hugo Boss, French Connection, True Religion, Adidas and Microsoft. Praised for creating custom sets for clients and the crowd, DJ Gatsby brings the look, the talents and wherewithal to make your party the party to be at. uring the glory days of the Gold Coast, the lords of the manor took to horses with a passion, often leaving their wives standing in the dust as they galloped off into the sunset. Whether it was playing polo, breeding thoroughbreds or training Lipizzan stallions to perform balletic moves, horses were the mainstay of social life here on the North Shore. Great legends have grown about this unique part of Long Island when huge fortunes were made just after the turn of the last century. After William

K. Vanderbilt drew worldwide attention to the area by initiating the Vanderbilt Cup Races in 1904, the new millionaires with their great wealth and power came in droves and built their estates, which led to an architectural phenomenon unparalleled in our country’s history, if not the world. And along with the castles, villas and marble palaces that were built, there were also massive stables to house the noble steeds. These special structures were often built to match the architectural style of the manor house.

Broad Hollow Ambrose Clark, whose $50 million came from the Singer sewing machine fortune, built one of the largest stables on Long Island. The red brick, ivy covered, English-style complex housed some of the finest mounts in the world. Clark was gaga over his horses and they ruled the roost, free to roam his 500 acres at Broad Hollow in Old Westbury. No cars were ever allowed on the property lest they startle or upset his prized pets. When one of his thoroughbreds won the Meadowbrook Cup, NBC rushed a radio crew out to the estate. Clark refused to allow their trucks on the property and all their recording and sound equipment had to be transferred onto farm wagons before he would speak to them or let them meet his horse. The radio crews were given a tour of the vast stables where the names Tea Maker, Xanadu, Major and dozens of others were emblazoned on polished brass plaques on all the oak wood stalls. Clark rode his horses morning to night and often rode with the Prince of Wales when the prince was in the States. In 1924, Clark added a huge ballroom to his Georgian Colonial-style mansion so he could host a hunt ball for 500 guests to honor his friend, the future King of England. Clark was devoted to his favorite horse, Kellsboro Jack, who won the Grand National in 1933. Whenever the animal was under the weather, Clark would go down to the stable and lay in the straw on the floor all night, soothing the beast until it was well. Years later when his beloved pet died, he had the horse buried on the estate with an elaborate ceremony and tombstone. After that, no matter what the weather, Clark would ride down to the gravesite and stand solemnly for several minutes before moving on. Clark lived to be 83 and requested that he be buried with his horse, along with several racing horseshoes that were placed inside his coffin. His modest tombstone simply read: Ambrose Clark: Lover – of Animals. After Broad Hollow burned to the ground in the late 1960s, all of Clark’s memorabilia, horse trophies, paintings and tacking gear were sent to the sporting museum in Cooperstown. One of Kellsboro Jack’s black leather and brass harnesses got left behind. I befriended one of the aging groomsmen, who remained on the estate and loved to share stories (and scandals). He gave me the harness and it is now part of our Gold Coast Museum Collection.

William Holloway’s Fox land

Fox Land One of the more colorful stories about the area took place at Fox Land, the breathtaking antebellum plantation perched on a hill in Old Westbury. The estate’s owner, William Holloway of oil and shipping millions, named his property Fox Land because of the abundance of foxes that overran the place. Aside from his love of horses, he was at odds with his fellow huntsmen as he also loved the little foxes and thought the sport of the hunt barbaric and cruel. As such, while hunters rode through the area with hounds barking and bugles blaring, Holloway would lure the foxes

with their favorite foods, in Pied Piper fashion, and hide them in a storm tunnel until the riders and hounds were out of sight. Meanwhile, up at the manor, Mrs. Holloway busied herself collecting chimpanzees that she housed in one of the main floor rooms. She installed giant tree stumps into the parquet floors where the chimps were free to leap about hurling bananas at one another. This proved to be too much for the otherwise animal-loving Mr. Holloway and he is said to have hopped a cruise ship and did not return home for a very long time.

Marshall Field Marshall Field’s Caumsett in Lloyd Neck was spread out over 2,000 acres of waterfront property. Field was the third generation heir to the multi-million dollar Chicago mercantile fortune that bore his grandfather’s name. Field ruled his secluded kingdom like a feudal lord, having spent much of his time in Great Britain. He was a prominent polo player and his vast Georgian brick polo stables were among of the finest in the country. Designed around a center courtyard, one had to pass through large

wrought iron gates to enter. Today, invading vines obscure the clock and bell tower and Adam style fanlights over the main doors. Inside, the spacious oak stalls run the length of the long tiled hall. All the hardware and finials are solid brass and have to be polished constantly. The interior stable was used in the movie The Godfather in 1971, in the scene where Robert Duvall visits the famous Hollywood director who makes the fatal mistake of revealing his love for his prized thoroughbred, Kartume. We all know what happened to that poor horsey. In his day, Field had his own live-in vet and a private hospital for ailing cows and horses. Today the property is open to the public, but in Ambrose Clark style, no cars are allowed on the estate.

W. Gould Brokaw’s Racetrack Great Neck financier W. Gould Brokaw had his own private racetrack where he hosted races that were open to all his neighbors, rich or poor. He had his own bookmakers and his lavish estate was the place to be at the height of prohibition, where the champagne flowed and the money rolled in from betting on the horses.

The Pratt Oval Perhaps the largest stable complex on Long Island was known as Dosoris Park, or the Pratt Oval, which took up most of the north end of Glen Cove. Charles Pratt was a partner with Rockefeller in founding Standard Oil. With his unlimited millions, Pratt built 16 mansions for his family, one next to the other. They all shared Dosoris Park, which encompassed a 60-acre sprawl of private stables, garage complex and carriage house

complete with an 80-foot clock tower. Seventy-two prized horses lived there in luxury, along with their grooms and trainers. They had their own racetrack and indoor training and paths surrounding the complex. Today only part of the carriage house and clock tower remains.

Billy Woodward’s Nashua Billy Woodward Jr. may have lost his head over a horse! In 1955, Woodward’s celebrated horse, Nashua, was the top-ranking thoroughbred in the country, having won almost every race it entered. Woodward, son of an old banking family magnate of New York Hanover-Trust, spent more time with his horse than he did with his wife, Ann. On Halloween eve of that year, the glamorous couple attended a formal dinner party for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor at a nearby estate. Many years later, one of the guests claimed that Billy talked all that night about his horse, thus ignoring his wife, and at some point Ann flew into a jealous rage, hurling a valuable vase against the wall. When they got home some two hours later, Ann shot and killed her husband as he was stepping out of the shower. Days after the tragedy, Life magazine made the infamous statement that the only thing Ann could have done that would have been worse was … to shoot the horse! (See fall issue of 25A)

Harbor Hill Clarence Mackay built a castle for his 42 horses at his Harbor Hill estate in Roslyn. The huge stable complex was crowned with a 100-foot bell and clock tower steeple, and had apartments for a live-in vet and a groom for each horse. It was rumored that Mackay even had a chef

on hand to make sure his pampered equines ate well. When Mackay’s favorite $100,000 thoroughbred, Land-O-Burns, got the sniffles, his master and vet wouldn’t leave his side until the horse was well. At some point Mackay came up with the idea of moose hunting weekends. On his 500-acre property, he built a rustic log cabin surrounded by a vast forest. Mackay had a giant moose, complete with antlers, stuffed and set on a complex series of train rails that zig-zagged in and around the pine trees. Mackay and his friends would then practice marksmanship, aiming their rifles at the electrically operated beast as it darted around the forest. Once the moose was shot to smithereens, another replaced it. This peculiar practice didn’t end until the stock market crash in ’29, when Mackay and many of his gun-toting, moose-shooting friends went bankrupt.

Polo Polo is still very much the ultimate status symbol and Long Island was one of the best places in the world to enjoy the sport. In 1924, the Prince of Wales traveled across the Atlantic to watch the illustrious polo stars of the day, such as Lady Stanford, Pete Bostwick, Tommy Hitchcock, Jock Whitney and Winston Guest. For the well-heeled, exchanging polo ponies as gifts was all the rage. Winston Guest received a string of rare ponies as a wedding present when he married F.W. Woolworth’s daughter, Helena, during the 1930s. Horses were so much a part of life on the Gold Coast, they even had their own parties. Financier C.K.G. Billings of Oyster Bay conceived the most bizarre event ever hosted with an equestrian theme. About 40 of Billings’ gentlemen friends were invited to a white tie and tails formal dinner party to be held in the ballroom. Each guest was to arrive on horseback where miniature tables, complete with the finest china and linens, were attached to the pommels of their saddles. Waiters dressed as grooms at a hunt party served a 12-course dinner. Not to be left out, the equine guests were each given a fancy oat-filled feedbag to munch on and served braised apples for dessert. All dined in elegance together. The macabre event made headlines in the press the next day, and has yet to be outdone by any member of the horsey set. Today the North Shore is a very different place than it was only decades ago. You no longer hear the thundering sound of a hunt galloping through the estate properties. The baying of hounds and men in bright red jackets flying over fences is a thing of the past. The Meadowbrook Hunt Club disbanded in 1972 along with so many other English traditions. Most of the grand European-style stables are gone now, with the exception of Ambrose Clark’s at Broad Hollow in Old Westbury. Polo, however, does continue to flourish in the Hamptons. 84 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

25A New York in Bloom from the Bronx to Brooklyn By Victoria Crosby

For more than a decade, the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx has celebrated the orchid with greenhouse exhibits displaying thousands of varieties in a spectacular show in early spring. The annual event attracts an enthusiastic crowd during the month-long display. In addition to the beautiful blooms presented in imaginative ways planted among the green foliage, you can always find an expert on hand to demonstrate the growth and care of these exotic flowers and to answer any questions. The orchids on display have many colors and shapes, from the phalaenopsis, also known as the moth orchid, which can be found in most florists, garden centers and many supermarkets, and are fairly easy to care for to the more rare specimens. Numerous species of orchid can be purchased at the Botanical Garden gift shop, along with books on the subject of growing orchids as well as orchid care products. The ancient Greeks thought orchids a symbol of virility, while in Victorian England they were a symbol of wealth. More than 20,000 varieties of orchids exist and with cross-breeding new types are discovered each year. Orchids have traditionally been used in corsages for proms and weddings. Some orchids have a fragrance and others don’t, some have long spidery petals, like the Mastavillia, and others have larger more pansy-like flowers. The majority of orchids do not need much water, although they thrive in 88 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com

a humid environment, but the phragmepedium in one type of orchid that likes “wet feet” as they naturally thrive in streams. Although orchids come in a variety of colors, the astute customer should know that the sky blue orchids on sale in some garden centers are not naturally that color but have been enhanced. The closest natural color is a blue-purple variety. A walk through the warm, moist, sunny greenhouses in March surrounded by the multicolored orchids is a great way to uplift the spirit and a sure cure for the winter blues. In May, at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the lilacs and cherry blossoms attract many visitors. There are several varieties of lilacs, all extremely fragrant, in purest white and many shades of purple. The many Japanese cherry trees are heavy with pink petals like cotton candy and have blossoms that, when they fall, resemble pink snowflakes dancing in the breeze. The colors and perfume of the spring flowering trees are a delight to the senses. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit at any time of year, but most especially in spring. So don’t miss the 2014 orchid show next March and April at the New York Botanical Garden (Nybg.org) in the Bronx or the Brooklyn Botanical Garden’s lilacs and cherry blossoms in bloom next May (bbg.org).

from the heart

With summer of 2013 upon us, the days are long, the sun is bright and the promise of dating joy and relationship happiness fills the air. Welcome the opportunity to make yourself a more charismatic and giving person! By Professor JM Love

Here are a few thoughts to consider:

1

When two individuals first meet, there is so much to learn in a relationship. Everything is new, exciting and vibrant. As you get close in an emotional and/or physical way, one of the two of you could feel more vulnerable and, unfortunately, more susceptible to being hurt. Interestingly enough, age doesn’t matter much. This axiom holds true whether you are 17 or 70!

2

It can be a real challenge to find that innocent, and somewhat childlike, love the second time around. As we get older, for most of us (at least me) the past can hold memories of a simpler, gentler time. On the scale of love, emotional ‘baggage’ need not weigh anyone down. Rather, it can provide wisdom going into a new relationship. Indeed, embrace your past.

3

Think of any new relationship as being on the same team. We all know there is no ‘I’ in the word team. But the letter ‘T’ can stand for a perfect concept: Togetherness!

4 5 6

If he (or she) is really into you, you will know it in a rather short period of time. A phone call will be picked up immediately; a text will be sent back to you within minutes (maybe even seconds). Everything will be on an ASAP basis because you rock his/her world. And to be fair – be honest with members of the opposite sex. Don’t give out your cell number to someone unless you really want that person to call you. And of course, never ask for a phone number unless you are serious about making the call. Why feign false interest?

And finally may I remind 25A readers that there is no Robert’s Rules of Order when it comes to dating. We learn on a daily basis as we meet new people, appreciate their comments and interact as best we can. It’s a life-long learning process that we all need to appreciate. No one has the answers – including Dr. Love! Until next time, enjoy the beautiful weather and happy dating!

25A Joe DeGuardia’s Passion for Boxing Is Paramount on Long Island “I started to get good at it. I was going to gyms, tournaments and I started winning – it kept evolving. I started collecting trophies and it got into my blood.”

By Ilena Ryan Boxing is in Joe DeGuardia’s blood. Son of accomplished boxer, Joe DeGuardia, Sr., Joe followed in his father’s footsteps from a very young age. He’d box with his father every day, starting at about five years old and his passion for the sport grew from there. “I started to get good at it. I was going to gyms, tournaments and I started winning – it kept evolving. I started collecting trophies and it got into my blood.” Even though DeGuardia hung up his professional boxing gloves years ago, he is surrounded by the sport on a daily basis. Owner of the Morris Park Boxing Club and Star Boxing, a boxing event production company, DeGuardia keeps himself in the boxing world and is sharing it with Long Islanders as well. If you’re a fan of boxing, it’s likely you’ve heard of The Paramount in Huntington, NY. Some of the most electric and exciting fights have been taking place there since 2011. And every fight has sold out, with the bouts being broadcast on major networks like NBC and Showtime.

example, at The Paramount, you see people from every walk of life: the people living in the ‘Great Gatsby’ areas of Long Island to the people from regular neighborhoods – it’s great.” Ask DeGuardia what keeps him in the boxing world and you’ll get a hearty laugh. “I’m crazy – it’s a crazy business. I like the challenge. Some people say I took too many shots in the head when I was fighting. It’s an exciting business, a difficult business, but there’s a lot of substance to it. There’s nothing like taking a kid who’s got nothing and building him up and all of a sudden he’s on top of the world.” Part of that process is what Joe sees at the Morris Park Boxing Club, where community outreach is important. Neighborhood kids who can’t afford gym memberships are given access. “Kids need role models to look up to and at the gym, they see that they don’t need to be out on the streets, they could be in the gym getting their minds and bodies better,” Joe says, admitting that boxing is what kept him out of trouble back in the day.

Bronx-born DeGuardia has a soft spot for Long Island. He attended law school at Hofstra University and enjoys being able to come back to do business. “Long Island is a great place and they have great boxing fans – The Paramount is a phenomenal, fun atmosphere. It’s almost like being in the Roman Coliseum in some respects – it has vibrancy to it; it’s the perfect venue.”

DeGuardia boxed professionally through law school before he had to give it up for his legal career. Despite the fact that he retired from the sport years ago, he says it’s hard to stay out of the ring. “It still calls and I still get in the ring. You get the bug; it’s an addiction. Again – this could be a product of getting hit in the head,” he laughs.

What DeGuardia enjoys so much about the sweet science is the audiences it brings. “I often say boxing is the ultimate melting pot. For

Jeff Krasner Jeff Krasner Productions has been a leading production/promotions company specializing in the music and entertainment industry for the past two decades. Jeff got his start in the business over 20 years ago and credits Michael “Eppy” Epstein from My Father’s Place as his mentor. Jeff prided himself on being self-motivated as well as an innovative force; he found promoting musical acts a natural and comfortable position. While attending college in Boston in the late ’60s and early’70s, Jeff booked his first band, Orpheus, at age 19. It was after experiencing Woodstock in 1969 that Jeff knew that the music industry was his passion. “My first album, or LP, was for The Beach Boys, released just before The Beatles came out in the early ’60s,” Jeff said with a nostalgic smile. Some of the other artists that Jeff has been fortunate to work with in recent years include Dave Mason, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Mick Taylor, The Good Rats, Rick Danko, Johnny Maestro, Commander Cody, Jimmy Vivino, John Ford, Peppy Castro, Mark Newman, The Funk Filharmonik and a host of local bands and singer/songwriters. 25A The Windsor Court Hotel A gracious hotel in the mysterious city of New Orleans By Gwen Wunderlich-Smith

Last year, I read The Beach Trees, an enchanting novel by Karen Walker that convinced me it was just a matter of time before I visited New Orleans. The thought of eating authentic Cajun food and traipsing through the French Quarter was suddenly calling me. I felt such a strong connection to the place that I believed the opportunity would soon come.

Lounge, the celebrated Le Salon for afternoon tea and an extensive art collection with mostly works of British origin, among other amenities and services. In true French fashion, there was a fabulous and extensive spread of champagne and crudités in the sky view lounge to welcome us, elevating our first impression of the hotel. There, among new friends and excited chatter, we relaxed and planned our visit.

Then last month, I was invited to the 30th anniversary of the French Quarter Festival and my chance to experience New Orleans in its full glory! For four days, more than 800 local musicians and bands would take over 22 stages in Woldenberg Park and around the French Quarter for what has become the largest free music festival in the South. Tempting, indeed. Without hesitation, I quickly agreed to take the chance and accept the generous offer to stay at the renowned Windsor Court Hotel.

My room was breathtaking. I enjoyed a full suite, with two flat-screen televisions, a butler’s pantry, large dressing and vanity area, Italian marble bath, complimentary Internet, iHome docking stations and French doors offering privacy between the bedroom and living room. Frette linens, Molton Brown bath products and Keurig coffeemakers made for an added dip into the lap of luxury.

I had reread much of The Beach Trees in preparation for my trip so by the time we arrived in New Orleans on a warm sunny Wednesday afternoon had re-romanticized this place of so many things. That being said, I was indeed in the perfect mindset when we pulled up at the Windsor Court. Located steps from the French Quarter, the 23-story Windsor Court has long been the choice for discerning travelers to New Orleans. The award-winning luxury hotel features 316 oversized guestrooms and suites, the acclaimed Grill Room Restaurant, the storied Polo Club

After a restful night complete with hot bath, fluffy robe and a glass of Malbec, I was ready to hit the streets the next morning in search of Café Du Monde and the beignets and chicory coffee I had heard so much about. An hour later, powder covering my black shirt, I sat smiling earto-ear, having eaten the most delicious dessert I will ever taste in my lifetime. Who knows how many one could actually sit here and eat, I wondered, but with the festival calling, I decided there are some secrets better kept. With that, I headed over to the festival and relished in the

jazz, the blues and southern music that dripped in sweet syrupy charm before the rain came and I decided to give a little shopping in the French Quarter a whirl before it was time to head back for dinner. Later that evening, we enjoyed a culinary experience with Chef Kristin Butterworth and Sommelier Sara Kavanaugh in the Grill Room back at Windsor Court. An award-winning restaurant that is considered one of the best in the world, the Grill Room has the most impressive wine selection in New Orleans (over 600 labels) presided over by Kavanaugh. Several courses of contemporary American cuisine with a distinctive New Orleans flair were served throughout the evening and favorites included the spring garlic soup, smoked butter halibut cheeks and Ponchatoula strawberry shortcake. The room was so elegantly appointed and the mood so festive that with my jeweled dress and Venetian mask, I felt whisked away to another place, during a time where riches and good fortune prevailed. A fairytale ending to a great first day in New Orleans. Between my trolley ride down to Charles Street, my shopping experience on Magazine Street and my walking tour of the glorious garden district, by mid- afternoon the next day I was ready for my spa treatment back at The Spa at Windsor Court, which has just received a several million dollar renovation. The moment I walked in, I was treated like royalty and I relished every minute of my aromatherapy massage that uses essential oils for an enhanced sensory experience. After a leisurely few hours at the spa, I headed to the pool where I met up with friends and enjoyed a few cocktails in the sun, feeling content and so very relaxed. That evening, we stopped into the cocktail bar at the Windsor Court where they promote artful drinking with a culinary twist. The accomplished mixologists collaborate with their chef to bring new culinary influences to original craft cocktails grounded in pre-prohibition themes. We enjoyed Windsor Swizzles and All that Jazz before we set out to Bourbon Street and several jazz clubs for an evening out on the town. A fantastic, memorable time was had by all in New Orleans and I knew I had not even touched the tip of the iceberg in exploring all that this mysterious city has to offer. But each spark of inspiration starts great quests and I know the time will soon come when I’ll be back. During your next trip to New Orleans, I suggest staying at the Windsor, as it is the only hotel there to earn four diamonds from AAA as well as four diamonds from Forbes. It is the only New Orleans hotel to achieve that dual distinction. This is one hotel that elevates your appreciation of true hospitality and we couldn’t be more pleased. COSTA RICA

ALMA DEL PACIFICO The Hidden Oasis in Central America

I

’m never one to pass up an opportunity to travel somewhere tropical and exotic. I had never been to Costa Rica and wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew it was a surfer’s paradise but was curious as to what else this small, ecofriendly country had to offer. I would soon realize that Pura Vida, pure life, is certainly true.

Exterior Alama Del Pacifco

The two-hour ride was actually quite relaxing. The majority of the trip was along a new highway that flowed around mountains, crossed the Rio Grande and exposed beautiful landscape and wildlife. Our driver, Randall, graciously pulled over just before we reached a long narrow bridge and told us to grab our cameras. The bridge was about 75 feet above a river with a sidewalk that was only about two feet wide. Below us were 20 or so very hungry crocodiles and vultures. It was certainly a National Geographic moment. As we drove closer to the resort, the road became more rural, taking us along cliffs overlooking the Pacific where we watched magnificent flocks of scarlet macaws. I was really in no hurry to arrive at our tropical destination, but soon enough, we did.

Villa Living Room

The Alma Del Pacifico Beach Hotel and Spa is a beautiful and colorful luxury resort literally located right on the Pacific. After the long flight, the first thing many travelers choose to do is reenergize themselves at the onsite spa located in the center of the property, just beyond the two large swimming pools. With a full menu of massages to choose from, you’ll come out ready to vacation! The resort is relatively small and with just 20 villas you are pretty much guaranteed peace and quiet. Each villa has its own small outdoor private pool/jacuzzi, kitchenette and living room with wi-fi, although trust me, you won’t be spending much time indoors. My Villa Bedroom

When we landed at San José Airport, there was an unusual amount of police activity. Little did I know that President Obama would be arriving in less then 24 hours and the airport would be on lockdown. I, however, would be two hours away in Playa Esterillos Este on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast at the exotic Alma Del Pacifico Resort.

favorite feature was the private pool overlooking the ocean. I was told it wasn’t uncommon for local wildlife to come right up to your door and they weren’t kidding. As I was relaxing in the pool, I looked over my shoulder to see a friendly iguana also relaxing on the edge, eating some of the fresh mango that I was enjoying! I must say the iguana had good taste. Many of the fruits and vegetables come from the hotel’s own gardens and are served in the open air restaurant that features international and Costa Rican dishes with some of the freshest seafood I have ever had. Certainly five-star! It was very tempting to just lounge in a hammock between two palm trees, watching surfers trying to catch the big one, or maybe even take a surf lesson at the resort myself, but there was much more to do than I realized. As I had seen first-hand en route from the airport, Costa Rica’s wildlife is abundant. If you like leisurely strolls through the jungle and along the ocean, head over to Manuel Antonio National Park. Here you’ll have an opportunity to be up-close and personal with two- and three-toed

sloths, iguanas, tropical plants as well as an abundance of wild monkeys while trekking along the ocean. This isn’t the drive-through safari at Great Adventure. These are wild animals in their home habitat within a few feet of you, keeping an eye on things. For more of an aerial view that will get your heart pumping, head over to the Pacific Rainforest Adventures Aerial Tram. Here you’ll be lifted skyward in an open-air gondola rising slowly at treetop level for a 30-minute ascent with breathtaking views. The top is where the excitement starts as you zip line back to the bottom. Located about a half-mile from Manuel Antonio Park is a great restaurant called El Avión. I could go on about how great the food is or the spectacular view or even the monkeys climbing about curiously watching what you order but not before I mention the complete US Military C-123 cargo plane sticking out from the front of the restaurant. In fact, it looks as if the plane landed here on top of the mountain and the restaurant was built around it. No surprise, the cargo plane has a little history. It turns out this was one of the cargo planes delivering weapons during the Iran-Contra scandal. Now the C-123 is a fully functional bar. The Swiss family Robinson would be proud to dine here!

Beach and Relaxation

Sloth

Another local restaurant for a great dinner is Los Almendros, located not far from Alma Del Pacifico. Serving Caribbean and Asian cuisine, the focus is on the freshness. The seafood is acquired right down the street from local fishermen. I politely asked my traveling companions if any of them would be ordering the last Caribbean lobster that was on the Specials menu. I was selfishly pleased when they said no until someone suggested that we all share it … thanks, Lisa! It was okay – I had an amazing sesame tuna that was cooked to perfection (and some lobster). In the evening we just relaxed at the hotel bar with general manager and part owner Fernando Alfaro. He politely asked me, “Jason, what would you like?” “I want to make a mojito,” I answered. “You want a mojito?” “No, I want to make a mojito.” Now, there was no reason in the world for me to bartend. Pacifico was more then generous and helpful, especially the bartender. But no sooner had I said it then I was behind the bar, muddling mint leaves and sugar. This is what Fernando had been talking about when he told me about the relationship the staff develops with their guests. Now I don’t know if they let any crazy American behind the bar, but we certainly had a night filled with laughter, plenty of drinks, music, a bonfire on the beach and new friends.

Surfing

There are a ton of different excursions you can take in the area. From horseback riding to yoga, jet skiing to ATVing, sport fishing to kayaking or just plain relaxing in that hammock and doing nothing. There is plenty of nothing or plenty of everything to do in Costa Rica, and oh, don’t forget, there’s that surfing thing, too. The staff at Alma Del Pacifico will be more than happy to help you set up your perfect getaway itinerary. Until next time … Pura Vida.

here’s nothing that compares with the luxury of traveling by way of private jet, especially in this age of heightened airport security, and longer lines and delays encountered by travelers for just about every commercial flight. And when it comes to private jet travel, there is nothing that compares with ExcelAire. 25A magazine is happy to offer some information from David Rimmer at ExcelAire to pique your interest in this unparalleled form of travel. What are the advantages of traveling via private jet? Convenience, productivity, comfort, service and reliability, to name a few. Private jets do what the scheduled airplanes simply cannot – fly business and leisure travelers on their own schedule to multiple destinations at convenient airports, without the hassles of flight delays, long security lines, misplaced bags and poor service. Business travelers can use the jet as an extension of their office, turning travel time into productive business time. And for leisure travelers, vacations start the minute they arrive at the airport, with personalized catering, in-flight entertainment and luxurious state-of-the-art airplanes. And everyone is treated as a valued guest. What is the most cost-effective way to travel by private jet? Without a doubt, charter is the least expensive way to travel via private jet because you pay as you fly. Unlike fractional ownership or jet cards that require customers to tie up massive amounts of cash, charter is pay-asyou-go. Also, private jet charter gives you the flexibility to use the right jet for each trip based on the length of your trip, number of seats needed, etc., rather than being tied into a specific aircraft. What should one look for when selecting a private jet provider? The most important consideration is safety; all private jet operators are not created equal. And you shouldn’t base your decision on price alone. Ideally, you should visit the private jet operator you are considering flying

with, meet their key personnel and gain a level of comfort based on what you see and hear. You should ask for the operator’s third-party safety audit ratings (Wyvern and ARG/US), question how long the company has been in business, the longevity of the pilots with the company and their experience flying the aircraft you are chartering. Also, ask if the operator performs its own maintenance or farms it out to outside vendors. Can you tell me a little bit about ExcelAire? ExcelAire is one of the nation’s leading private jet charter firms, specializing in worldwide jet charters, aircraft management, maintenance and sales. It has a fleet of more than 20 jets, including the largest fleet of Legacy jets dedicated to charter in the U.S. The company maintains almost 200,000 square feet of office and hangar space at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP), conveniently located for easy access to New York City and the Hamptons. What makes ExcelAire the provider of choice for private jet travel? Our commitment to safety and service is second to none. We have the most experience of any private jet operator in the area. We began life as an aircraft maintenance provider in 1985 and our whole culture is based on providing our clients with exceedingly well-maintained aircraft. Our jets are flown by the best-qualified pilots in the business and supported by 150 aviation professionals who are dedicated to ensuring that every trip exceeds even the highest expectations. That is the reason we have become the private jet operator of choice for heads of state, royalty, high net-worth individuals and leading figures from the entertainment world. How can I get started traveling via private jet? Email me anytime day or night at DavidR@excelaire.com or call 631.737.5801 and I’d be glad to help you charter a private jet for your next trip. I’d be happy to provide quotes or answer any questions you may have about traveling via private jet.

n July, when stifling heat descends upon our Metropolis, the beautiful and rich, the intellectuals, the sun worshipers and the artists who can escape East, to the Hamptons. Once the destiny of bohemian artists looking for big skies and open spaces, the potato fields of yore have long been uprooted and replaced by sprawling mansions filled with art and sculptures. Some might be nostalgic for times past. I love the Hamptons of today, the people, the culture and the vibe that permeates our Eastern shores. In truth, the art scene, established by the likes of Jackson Pollack, Williem de Kooning and their peers has never left. It is almost tangible in the summer breeze and salty air. It is therefore no great surprise that the Hamptons have become the home of two world class art fairs: ArtHamptons and Art Southampton.

by hundreds of artists. Many Long Island and New York Galleries will also be attending, amongst them the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery of New York, the Mark Borghi Fine Art Gallery of Bridgehampton, Palm Beach and New York, and the Richard J. Demato Gallery of Sag Harbor. Richard Demato believes that Arthamptons has been the best art fair that their gallery has been involved with, because it has giving them the opportunity to meet new clients and collectors not found elsewhere.

Westwood Gallery of New York is in many ways a mirror of what Art Southampton offers, as they show a wide variety of art from paintings and drawings to photography by established masters and emerging artists. Gallery Valentine of East Hampton is organizing an Andy Warhol exhibit at Art Southampton, and it’s VIP cocktail will be attended by some of Warhol’s former collaborators and entourage. As in 2012 the proceeds of this years VIP opening night will benefit the Southampton Hospital. Both of these amazing Hampton fairs are a delightful way to spend a sunny or rainy day, morning or afternoon, enjoying cutting edge and blue chip international art right here on the tip of Long Island. You can find out about opening hours and the many special events that are being hosted on their respective websites.

Art Hamptons July 11-14 In its sixth year, Arthamptons is set up in a 50,000 square foot modular structure, which is erected in Bridgehampton, on the enormous Sculpture Field of Nova’s Ark. This year about 70 illustrious galleries from all over the world will exhibit modern and contemporary pieces

Art Southampton July 25-29 Art Southampton is hosted in a 100,000 square foot pavilion on the 18 acre Southampton Elks Lodge. Established in 2012 by Art Miami, it has been a big success form the start. Beth McNeill of the McNeill Art Group, Southampton, gives a glowing testimony: “This year promises to bring an exciting list of galleries from around the world, exhibiting some of the most sought after works by contemporary masters and the hottest emerging artists of our time. Being a part of an art fair that reflects the sophistication, elegance and the true nature of the environment in which we live out here is thrilling.”

Southampton’s sizzling summer fun By Alyssa Nightingale

T

he majestic hamlet of Southampton is unlike any other place that one can visit. It is one of New York’s wealthiest waterfront locations, a playground for the New York Metro area jetsetters, celebrities and local residents. It is a part of what is known collectively as the Hamptons, considered one of the most prestigious communities in the country. Southampton itself is a quaint little village in the southeast part of Suffolk County, N.Y., about 90 miles east of Manhattan. Known as the oldest English settlement in New York State, Southampton’s name is believed to come from the Earl of Southampton. As of 2010, approximately 3,200 people live within the community. Several well-known residents include Michael J. Fox, Howard Stern, Calvin Klein and Felix Rohatyn, who saved New York City within a matter of hours from bankruptcy in the mid/late ’70s. Southampton hamlet is known locally and even nationally as a diverse mix of cultural groups living together in a community of prestige with an abundance of amenities to enjoy. When you travel within Southampton, you see multi-million dollar residences as well as unique upper middle class and middle class communities.
