JEWISH FEDERATION OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY
2015 Annual Report
THE JEWISH FEDERATION funds & supports a comprehensive network of organizations that do two things: CARE FOR PEOPLE IN NEED
here at home, in Israel and around the world.
NURTURE & SUSTAIN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY today and for future generations.
By working with a broad cross-section of community members to raise and distribute funds, we ensure that the programs, institutions and values that enrich our Jewish community remain vibrant and strong. From feeding the hungry to 2
helping the unemployed, from supporting families with special needs to funding Jewish education and Israel experiences and advocacy, the Jewish Federation is focused on addressing the most pressing issues facing our community every day.
A MESSAGE
from our leadership
Dear Friends, When you are raising money for pressing needs year after year, it’s true that not everything can be an “emergency.” Yet, right from the start, the needs this year just felt more urgent. We had barely closed our 2014 campaign when rockets began raining down in Israel. We quickly switched gears and, within days, opened an Israel Emergency Campaign. For seven weeks during Operation Protective Edge, we sent nearly daily updates to the community, organized a solidarity gathering and took seriously our role as a trusted partner in fundraising, raising more than a quarter of a million dollars. As the conflict wound down, needs at home became apparent as our college students heading off for the semester were about to face increased anti-Israel sentiment on many of their campuses. To address this, we brought in a representative from the Israel Action Network to talk about BDS and published a four-page pullout section in HAKOL on the topic. A follow-up session was held with the students over winter break. Then, January brought news of the shootings in France, including at a kosher supermarket. A month later we learned of an attack at a Denmark synagogue. Again we provided the community with an on-the-ground perspective from our overseas partners, who used Federation funds to increase security at Jewish institutions and help the communities recover. All the while, the crisis in Ukraine that began the year before wore on, and, through our partners, we provided the necessary means for the 350,000 Jews there to survive the winter. This is all not to mention our needs at home:
Educating students at the Jewish Day School; providing a central place for Jewish life at the JCC; caring for our most vulnerable through Jewish Family Service. Our Jewish Senior Life Connection program expanded this year to include PrimeTime at the J, which provides a broad range of activities to keep seniors active in mind and body and connect them to Jewish life. Our Young Adult Division also expanded in both capacity and activity, and reinvigorated its tikkun olam initiative, collecting food for families in need at Thanksgiving and participating in a community-wide mitzvah day on Super Sunday.
Mark H. Scoblionko President
None of this would be possible without you, our committed donors, who have supported the Federation for so many years. To honor those commitments, we launched the Silver Circle Society this year, which recognizes donors who have given to Federation for 25 years or more. May we all aspire to join this elite group. In times of “emergency” or not, the Federation will continue to be there to address the needs of the community, whatever they may be, but it’s because of you that we are there. Thank you for your ongoing support.

The Federation distributed more than $3 million this year to help Jews at home, in Israel and around the world.

It is difficult to explain what it feels like when you tell your 8-year-old that he can go invite his friend from across the street to come over and play and as he finishes crossing the street, a siren goes off. You watch him turn back to you, his face panicked, and start running and you run to him and you pray that a car won’t kill us both because he is running without looking around and I have to get to him and I grab him and we run inside to the shelter.
- Yonit Peleg, Yoav resident & Partnership2Gether coordinator
When Israel needs us, WE ARE THERE. In the summer of 2014, rockets rained down on Israel for 50 days. Residents of southern cities such as Sderot, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Be’er Sheva, and those living in our sister region of Yoav, were left constantly fleeing to bomb shelters. Locations further north, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, also heard the sirens sound. Schools and camps were closed, businesses couldn’t operate and the economy was at a standstill. The Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley partnered with local synagogues and Jewish communities across North America to “Stop the Sirens,” providing emergency aid to alleviate the pain and suffering of Israelis living in harm’s way. The money we raised through the Israel Emergency Campaign helped provide care for homebound elderly and disabled adults during this time of terror, respite for tens of thousands of children fleeing rocket attacks and crisis counseling for Israelis who were overwhelmed by anxiety and in need of relief. It provided emergency grants to families directly impacted by the rocket fire. In Yoav, our Partnership2Gether community, 70 percent of people do not have shelters in their homes. More than 40 percent of the public shelters they must rely on are unusable. The funds we raised are continuing to help refurbish these bomb shelters. In partnership with the municipality, our funds will also enable the creation of an emergency response center. The goal is that the next time the sirens sound, our Yoav family will be better equipped to respond.
$250,000 was raised by our community to help Jews in Israel during Operation Protective Edge

In peace or in crisis, WE ARE THERE. This isn't the first time Aza Grigorenko, 88, has been forced to leave her home because of war.
workers from the local Hesed social welfare center to her home.
As a teenager during World War II, she and her mother resettled in the eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk. There, Aza met her husband and gave birth to her only son, Alexsandr.
But when the current crisis in Ukraine intensified, Alexsandr came back to Slavyansk to relocate his mother. Mother and son now share a tiny two-room apartment in St. Petersburg and receive food, medicine and healthcare from their new local Hesed.
Even after Alexsandr moved to St. Petersburg, her husband died and she became increasingly frail, Aza stayed. The Federation’s overseas partner, the JDC, has cared for her for the last decade, sending healthcare
As a citizen of a foreign country, Aza is not eligible for state social support. Alexsandr is not sure what else he can do. JDC is their only lifeline – their only support.
UNREST IN UKRAINE The desperate situation in Ukraine speaks to the most fundamental reasons why Federations are so critical. We have not turned away. We are on the ground, and we are making a difference.

When anti-Semitism is on the rise, WE ARE THERE. Harassment of Jews throughout the world is at its highest level in seven years. In Europe, news reports describe a significantly deteriorating situation. Fatal attacks in France and Denmark this year, as well as vandalism against synagogues and other Jewish facilities throughout Western Europe, were shocking and disturbing. Here is what we are doing: RAISING AND ALLOCATING FUNDS Federations have raised close to $1 million to supplement funds provided by the French Jewish community to address important needs in France. This money is being used primarily to help the community address urgent security needs, and also to assist with post-trauma counseling. FUNDING ALIYAH FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO RELOCATE TO ISRAEL 7,000 people made aliyah from France in 2014, triple the number in 2012 and equivalent to 1 percent of the entire French Jewish community. This is the largest number of French olim in a single year in Israel’s history, and it may double again in 2015.
ENHANCING OUR CAPACITY TO ADDRESS SECURITY The Jewish Federations’ Secure Community Network (SCN) has developed an unprecedented level of security expertise and close ties with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and today is assisting Jewish communities worldwide. Within hours of the attacks in France and Denmark, SCN staff was on the ground, providing on-site crisis management expertise and helping strengthen local security efforts. COLLABORATING WITH OUR PARTNERS The Jewish Federations convened a meeting of key organizations that provide funding and services to Jews in Europe. Together we examined the rapidly changing situation, shared information and explored potential areas for collaboration.
‘A Jew Without Fear’ Carole Sebbah grew up in a loving family in beautiful Nice,
France. But as a Jew, she always felt a deep connection to Israel. With the rising tide of anti-Semitism in France, she reached out to the The Jewish Agency to help her make aliyah. “Today, I’m proud to say that Israel is my home and my country,” Carole said. “With the help of Federation, I have made aliyah and can finally be a Jew without fear.”
When disaster strikes, we are there. In the wake of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal in April 2015, we immediately started collecting funds for emerging relief efforts. Amid a quickly rising death toll and widespread destruction in Kathmandu and the surrounding region, our partners assessed the unfolding situation on the ground to ensure survivors’ immediate needs were addressed.

When seniors in our community need us,
WE ARE THERE.
PrimeTime at the J keeps seniors engaged On a windy Wednesday in February, five friends sat kibbitzing around a card table in the Auxillary Auditorium of the JCC. Their Mah Jongg tiles were clicking away. Empty bowls from that afternoon’s hot lunch – vegetarian chili with herbed rice and corn10
bread – were stacked on a nearby table. It was PrimeTime at the J.
address the social needs of active seniors in the Jewish community.
The Jewish Community Center, in partnership with the Federation and Jewish Family Service through Jewish Senior Life Connection, launched PrimeTime this year to
From PickleBall to current events, brunch and learn programs to bus trips, PrimeTime helps keep seniors engaged and involved in local Jewish life.
Pilot program helps spread the spirit of Shabbat After singing, toasting and enjoying each other’s company, seniors at Country Meadows broke challah with Jewish Family Service volunteers in June as part of a pilot program to bring Shabbat into local residential facilities. The hope is to enrich the spiritual lives of seniors who may feel separated from their faith. Cantor Kevin Wartell of Temple Beth El created a service that incorporated songs and prayers that had the whole
room singing, praying, swaying and sharing their stories with one another. The residents and volunteers could follow along with the service in transliterated Hebrew with an English translation. “This is truly a community effort,” said Carol Wilson, who coordinates senior programs at Jewish Family Service. “We want to make sure that every member of our community is able to partake in the spirit of Shabbat.”
The GO Program and Groups on the GO One of the most pressing needs of seniors in our community is transportation. More than 30 seniors have signed up for The GO Program for free door-todoor rides to doctors’ appointments, grocery stores and more. An expansion of this has been Groups on the GO, through which we provide funding to agencies to offset the cost of senior transportation to events.

Federation-supported school twinning program connects the Jewish Day School with Israel
YOAV - LEHIGH VALLEY
JDS students and staff celebrated Passover at a model seder in March with pre-K and kindergarten children from the JCC and with students from Sdot Yoav school in Israel via Skype.
In December, a group of educators from Yoav spent a week in the Lehigh Valley meeting with Jewish Day School and public school classes and teachers.
The Middle School students at the JDS engaged in the school twinning program with Sdot Yoav throughout the year, sharing greetings and gifts for Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah and Purim.
The project is a result of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley’s Partnership2Gether initiative, which creates people to people connections between the Lehigh Valley and Yoav.
To secure our Jewish future through schools, camps and family programs, WE ARE THERE.
Holocaust Resource Center connects local students & survivors Four Allen High School students listened intently as Edward Posner talked about his childhood. As the students took notes and recorded the conversation, Posner described what it was like in the ghetto of Shanghai during World War II, how he acclimated to life in the United States and his experience on a kibbutz in the 1970s.
Happy campers connect Jewishly Numerous studies have shown that Jewish children and teens who attend Jewish camp maintain greater connections to the community throughout their lives. We are proud to support our own Camp JCC, as well as provide scholarships for Jewish overnight camps.
This conversation was just one part of a project that has been years in the making. After receiving a grant from the Allentown School District Foundation, Allen history teachers Jeff Dutt and Matt Rohrbach began working with the Federation’s Holocaust Resource Center and their students to compile an oral history of the Holocaust in the form of interviews with area survivors. In total, 40 students interviewed 10 Holocaust survivors from the Lehigh Valley. The recordings will be donated to the Holocaust Resource Center as well as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. 13
THE STRENGTH OF A PEOPLE. The Power of Community. Educational Opportunities
In addition to raising and distributing funds, the Federation provides a variety of services and programs that enrich the Lehigh Valley Jewish community.
From forums on elections and interfaith topics to panel discussions with members of the Maimonides Society for medical professionals, we sponsored a host of programs throughout the year that educated and enriched the Jewish community. Yachad University courses and partnerships with local universities further enhanced adult Jewish education.
Community Building As the central Jewish address in the Lehigh Valley, we unite the community for solidarity and celebration. This year, we stood together in support of Israel, performed mitzvot on Super Sunday, marked Yom HaShoah, celebrated Yom Ha’atzmaut and brought 700 people to Jewish Heritage Night at the IronPigs.
14
Volunteerism and Networking
Focusing this year on social action, our Young Adult Division collected enough food at Thanksgiving to feed 30 Jewish families. The Lehigh Valley Jewish Professionals brought together Jews of all ages and stages for networking events at Chanukah and Passover.
Publications
Outreach We delivered books to 300+ kids through PJ Library, “shalomed 18 babies and helped 10 Bnai Mitzvah to create meaningful service projects this year.
Our award-winning newspaper, HAKOL, serves as the voice of the local Jewish community, bringing news, information, human interest and event listings to more than 3,000 households per month. This year, we published our biennial magazine Shalom Lehigh Valley in partnership with Lehigh Valley Style, reaching 80,000 people across the region. 15

Donor Advisory Funds provide many of the advantages of a private foundation while eliminating on-going legal and accounting costs, as well as exise taxes on investment income. The Jewish Federation offers two types of Donor Advisory Funds. The first, called “Legacy Philanthropic Funds,” permit donors to recommend distributions of a percentage of the fund’s value annually. The second, called “Donor Advised Funds,” our newest vehicle, permit donors to recommend distributions up to all of the fund’s value throughout the year. Champion of giving reaches many through one fund After her husband’s family business was sold, Judy Auritt Klein said, “we did the best thing we could do, philanthropically,” by establishing a Legacy Philanthropic Fund. “We raised our family in Allentown and in the Jewish community and it was wonderful! We were grateful and wanted to
express that in tangible ways,” she said. Judy and her children choose qualified nonprofit organizations to distribute funds to each year. Upon approval by the Federation Board, the staff takes care of all disbursements of funds for the family. Judy said, “They make it so easy.”

CORPORATE contributions PENNSYLVANIA’S
Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program Through its participation in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley has been able to distribute over $1.6 million in scholarships benefitting low-income families at the Jewish Community Center of Allentown and the Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley. The scholarships are awarded to children from families whose household incomes meet the Commonwealth’s guidelines. Businesses can donate to the program at virtually no cost. Pennsylvania provides generous tax credits, upwards of 90% to 100%, for participation in the EITC program. The charitable contributions also qualify for the Federal tax deduction.
