Jack Bacon Mount
In 1935 Jack was born in Alhambra, CA, as the youngest of five children of Robert Benjamin and Fannie Louisa Mount. Brothers Kenneth, a Naval airman, and Wayne, a Naval Commander, preceded Jack in death. Peggy Weickert and Joe Mount are Jack's surviving siblings. Jack graduated from Alhambra HS, Fullerton Junior College, and USC, playing basketball at all three schools and preparing his career in education. He traveled on two basketball missionary trips to the Orient with Overseas Crusades.
Jack lived out a full educational career. He served for 37 years in the Alhambra City School District, moving through the ranks as teacher, coach, counselor, dean, assistant principal, and principal. He was principal of San Gabriel High School for 19 years. Jack and Sheila's love affair began at Alhambra First Baptist, where they met in 1957. Their devotion continued through Jack's final days. They have two children, Jeffrey Tyler Mount and Jodi Lynn McDowell, and four grandsons: Jack Mount, Ben Mount, Joshua McDowell, and Justin McDowell. As a husband, father, and grandfather, Jack modeled commitment, patience, and character. Jack loved his family and circle of deep friendships with kindness and cheer. These persons included his extended family in Allison Mount and Scott McDowell, his many friends after 36 years at Lake Avenue Church, his school colleagues, and his long time friends. His quiet strength, twinkling humor, and faith in God blessed all who knew him. Jack retired in 1996 to enjoy time, family, and friendships at his home of 50 years on La Presa Drive and at his mountain cabin at Bass Lake, CA. At all times, Jack was an avid handyman, painter, plumber, woodworker, and landscaper. He loved golf, sailing, tennis, and boating. He loved the mountains. In his later years, Jack was guided by his faith in God and Isaiah 40's promise: “Yet those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles.” His story certainly continues in Jesus’ presence where the promise can be fulfilled for eternity.
