South Wales’ Legare Institute

2 Year (Year-in-Practice)IMArchWSA: Location WalesTalbot,Neath-PortResolven,: Project BuildingCommunity&CenterHistorical/Educational: Tutor AlderJames:

The project revolved around the key strategic idea of proposing a business transition from the former mining industry to an alternative and innovative agriculture industry utilizing Resolven’s abandoned mine tunnels and access shafts. The Miners Welfare Hall is to be rehabilitated in a sensible manner in order to maintain and restore its architectural value and portray the heritage and history of the area. In order to achieve versatility and dynamism within the building’s key spaces detailed tectonic and mechanical studies and explorations of materials, mobile junctions, and mechanisms have been undertaken.

During the second semester of my MArch I course at the WSA I was an intern at MoederscheimMoonen Architects, a small architecture studio in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I had wanted to get first-hand experience at a dutch practice as I had heard about their sustainable design approaches towards new urban development and I was attracted to the idea of being able to compare various working scenarios in completely different contexts during my placement year. At MMA I had the chance to work alongside a group of talented individuals with very different skills and gain experience in foam modeling and use my CAD and visualization skills in the various design projects I was able to assist in.

Miguel Ángel Ramón During the first semester of my MArch I course at the WSA I was an intern at Miguel-Angel Ramón’s small architecture studio in N-W Spain. Working alongside a veteran architect has been a remarkable experience. I’ve had the chance to join him at many site visits prior to design and during construction execution, meet with clients in person and work in the office with my colleagues developing plans, preparing them for their later endorsement, and creating 3D models and visuals for the various projects being undertaken by the firm.

10 Year 3BScWSA: Location WalesValley,RhonddaCymer,: Project Camp/HostelYouth&CenterCommunity/Visitor: Tutors WarrenHamish&HughesBarnabyBeeston,William:

The ‘Scape’ The proposal aims to explode the existing site’s economy, built around the tourist industry and the local businesses: An E-Bike Hire, a tourist rental apartments building, and the town’s Kiosk. It is a piece of infrastructure designed to attract more visitors and bring revenue to TheCymer.building hosts spaces for eating and resting, a community hall and plenty of multifunctional rooms, and a children’s weekly/summer camp in the repurposed adjacent former chapel in order to allow youngsters to explore and learn from the rural environment; and when not used as a school-camp facility, the ‘Camp-Inn’ can be used as a hostel for travelers and visitors to the valley.

Deriving from my first impressions of the site and contextual analysis, my conceptual ideas developed with two intentions: appropriately respond to the site’s lack of natural light, and maintain and enhance the existing innate connections and routes between the citizens and the built complex (Town Hall + market).

28 Year 2)(Semester2BScWSA: Location WalesTaff,CynonRhonddaPontypridd,: Project HallMarket&HousePerformance: Tutor SmithPippa:

The building’s main goal is to activate and revitalize the heart of Pontypridd encouraging the town’s inhabitants and surrounding villages to congregate and gather for the enjoyment of periodic and public-led organized events within the internal theatre spaces, the upgraded market hall, and the large ‘agora’ (town square) proposed.

The Hall of Light

The design concepts that drove the development of the project were ‘Apricus’ (bringing light into an enclosed space), and ‘Nexus’ (keeping the existing links within the site whilst creating new ones).

The Bridge House

34 Year 1)(Semester2BScWSA: Location WalesTaff,CynonRhonddaPontypridd,: Project HousingSocial: Tutor BurtonTim:

The ‘Bridge House’ is a creative-reuse design proposal for an underused car park aiming to serve as transitional social housing for homeless or at-risk teens and young people. It is designed to provide protection and privacy whilst encouraging social interactions between all its residents through open-plan design, shared amenities, and openness to the street and town outside.

46 Two in One Working as a student group and with the guidance of local carpenter Chris Williams, our ‘Vertical Studio’ focused on designing and building three signature furniture pieces for the new-built ‘Grangetown Pavilion’. The featured multifunctional piece may be used both as a chair and a stool depending on the way it’s positioned. After traveling to the US as part of an exchange program I was able to take art and graphic design classes at my school. This awakened my interest in the graphic design world. I began to learn different 2D digital design software and I started making non-commercial book covers for amateur ‘Wattpad’ writers. Eventually, I started participating in ‘99d’ contests and designing book covers for published authors all over the globe. These are a few selected examples of book cover designs I’ve made for published paperback and My full portfolio
