sounds warning Concrete manufacturers should think again before buying cut-price imported cement as it offers little, if any, advantage in the marketplace and contributes nothing towards our local economy. This was the message from Grant Neser of Afrisam, in an address to the South African Readymix Association (Sarma), at its annual conference held in Broederstroom recently. He added that any small price advantage that imported cement suppliers may offer is usually negated by underweight bags and lack of technical support and technical expertise. “In the case of high value building and construction projects imported cement manufactures offer no backing in the event that a problem is experienced. This leaves all the risk on the contractor or concrete supplier should things go wrong,

Contractors visit new training facility The SA Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA) and its training arm, the SA Paint Industry Training Institute (SAPITI) recently staged an extremely successful ‘Open Day’ for painting contractors at SAPMA’s new Centre of Excellence in Springs. The contractors were given a tour of the complex and training facilities during which they saw students currently undergoing training, and were briefed on future plans for the Centre of Excellence. The entire training curriculum was explained and demonstrations of the training procedures were staged. The Chemical Industry Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) also spelt out the benefits of paint applicators utilising the government’s Work Skills Development Plan to obtain financial assistance for the training of applicators. Deryck Spence, executive director of SAPMA, says the painting contractors were extremely impressed with what they regarded as a long overdue training facility for the coatings sector. “Several of the contractors indicated that they wanted to send staff for application training as soon as possible, and also showed strong interest in joining SAPMA,” states Spence, adding, “We offered generous discounts in training costs for the contractors in attendance, and we are planning another Open Day for contractors later this year.” The Centre of Excellence’s first intake of students took place on July 1 this year and the students are currently undergoing training incorporating practical paint application in the course, NQF level 2-6 Technical Training and Business Training for the Retail Sector, which is also open to non-technical students. Training at the Centre of Excellence will be expanded in 2014 to include waterproofing, spraypainting, corrosion and powder coatings.
Kenny Hall (left) and Andrew Ferguson of Kyalami Painters were among the painting contractors who were introduced to the training facilities during an ‘Open Day’ at the new SAPMA/SAPITI Centre of Excellence in Springs by Deryck Spence (right) of SAPMA.

Swartland presently sets the benchmark with regards to energy efficiency in windows and doors. “Swartland is at the forefront of performance improvements in South Africa with regards to composite gaskets, double-glazing, and the use of water-based coatings on products. Not only are its windows and doors designed to offer the best insulation qualities currently on the market, but they are also manufactured from a very green and renewable material – wood. This ensures that Swartland’s windows and doors are an outstandingly environmentally-friendly choice, as well as being some of the most energy efficient on the market,” he says. In fact, a recent SAFIERA (South African Fenestration and Insulation Energy Rating Association) test confirms this, stating that the company’s double-glazed windows are one of the most energy efficient tested windows currently on the market in South Africa.

What makes a Mica Member? A good Mica Member is a committed retailer with a passion for a brand. Mica is all about the business and its commitment to building a brand that gives its members an advantage in the market. The group’s members are involved in their businesses and love what they do; they are also, where possible, shareholders in the Holding Company and Brand. This flat structure and commitment to the group is what makes us different. Our members are offered the opportunity to shape their futures and the business through the different forums and member structures, so a Mica Member who wants to get the best out of the brand needs to be someone who participates at whatever level possible and grabs opportunities to grow with both hands. This is not a standard franchise, but a voluntary trading organisation, and to flourish, the members need to participate.
innovate to be at the forefront of new developments in the retail and hardware industry and thereby maximise the overall benefit of the group to all members and suppliers. In short – “To be the first choice destination for the home improver.” The strategic future of Mica is to incorporate store roll-outs, consumer loyalty and retention programmes, research and development, retail improvements, training and overall brand dominance through living up to its mantra – “Let us show you how.”
Henry Oberholster – Mica’s new MD “Henry Oberholster is a great fit for the Mica Managing Director role,” says Debra Schmidt, Marketing Manager from Mica, adding that, “He has come through the business, as a successful store owner and then a key Operations Team Member at the current Support Centre. Henry knows and understands the dynamics of the business well, and most importantly, understands its personality. Mica is not simply a business, it is a family and to be the “patriarch”, I believe you need to have lived as part of the Group.” Oberholster (see our interview with the man himself on page 44, Ed.) brings to the table a wealth of retail experience, much of which has been gleaned as part of this group, and is in a great position to grow the business in the future. Under his guidance, the Mica footprint has already started to grow with seven new stores due to open before the end of 2013 and this is because the team clearly understands the retailers’ needs and has been able to translate the Mica offering into something that they find both attractive and effective.

Sika celebrates Women’s Day In August, Debbie Westwood from Sika celebrated Women’s Day by spoiling ladies at the Builders Trade Depot store in Margate. She donned her yellow dungarees (with added black boots and a black hat to give style and elegance to the occasion), and set up a Sika demo table with a display of red, orange and yellow roses and a beautiful bowl of chocolates. Westwood demonstrated Sika Cemflex, a waterproofing and bonding agent that can be used to waterproof flowerboxes, ponds, shower floors and walls to name a few applications. She also demonstrated H2O Tite, one of Builder’s own brands of waterproofing products. Both of the products are easy to use, even for ladies! Women customers were all offered chocolates and there were sweets for the kiddies, while the odd treat was given to male customers too, so everyone was spoilt!
Supporting Build it soccer When Pinetown Build it recently hosted its annual U13 Soccer Tournament, they invited Sika’s cheerleader extraordinaire, Debbie Westwood along to give her usual colourful brand of generous support. Thirteen local U13 soccer teams were led by a band of drum majorettes to the nearby soccer fields where Sika sponsored packets of chips, cool drinks and sweets for every player and Debbie, dressed up in her trademark dungarees, striped socks, red and black shirt and Sika peak cap, was there to hand them out. “There was a fantastic vibe with music playing and children singing as they warmed up for their matches,” says Westwood. She had filled her yellow bucket with sweets and Sika Fortune Cookies and offered them to supporting family members, adding to the feeling of camaraderie and team spirit. “It was a day of great fun and energy!” she enthuses.

If only you could get into your

Want a PERMANENT solution to identify your display units in stores?
By John Stanley
How often have you wondered how your customer thinks? If only you could get into the customer’s brain and understand how they thought. Can we use psychology to grow sales? That is the question. Well, it seems as if the answer is yes. Gregory Ciotti is a psychology specialist who has looked at you and I when we are shoppers and has asked what the ten key hot points are that we should know as retailers to increase the average sale per customer. How can we get more sales by understanding the brain? Let’s look at the ideas he has developed.
Break the paralysis We all know that once a customer starts buying they will continue to keep buying; our challenge is starting the process with them. Pressure selling often has the reverse effect to what we need. Research by Professor Robert Cialdini has shown that one way of breaking the habit is to offer a minimum to an offer. For example, if a promotion started with showing the consumer the minimum investment to start the process, they

quickly before I caught a plane to present a conference. I had a lot of pain. I phoned our local computer supplier up and he said he had a backlog of work and it looked like it would be three days before he could solve my problem, but he asked me to give him five

minutes and he would call me back. Five minutes later he phoned to tell me somebody would be with me in 15 minutes. How he solved it I have no idea, but he removed my pain and now I am an advocate. Fast delivery and instant gratification can grow sales
Make an enemy and be selective You do not want every customer that walks or drives past; be selective on who your customer is. Tell customers who you want and who you do not want to be customers. Examples are: • “For the lovers of fine wine” • “For those who enjoy sports” • “For the plant connoisseur” • “For the real coffee drinker”
Promote your values 64% of consumers say they shop somewhere because they can relate to the retailers values. Do customers that walk in your door know your values or are you just another retailer they do business with? The best companies build a community around the brand.
Become a Devil’s Advocate When you question people’s beliefs, people start to respect you more. Clearly you have to have done your research before you become the Devil’s Advocate, but challenge your customer’s beliefs about the products you are selling and back that up with information, examples and research.
Delight your customers Customers want consistency in the retail experience with your business, but they also want pleasant surprises from you

Homebuild is a hardware and building material voluntary trading group with the primary target focused on rural and urban markets. The overriding philosophy of the business is to continually put independent retailers in a position to out perform the competition. Its thrust for growth is twofold. Firstly to ensure the business grows its store number in all regions. Secondly, to tap the huge growth potential of its existing stores through increased retail sales, loyalty and organic growth. The Homebuild market share is small (probably 5%), but it is growing wherever it opens new stores. The company’s strategy is to grow the group sales faster than any of its competitors and ahead of the total market.

Currently EST is on a recruitment drive to entrench its national footprint. This, according to Rob Suttle, Merchandise Director, has been made very easy due to the transparent nature of the group model and the fact that all members are also shareholders in the company. This setup makes for easy communication and trust within the group. This model is highly appreciated by independent traders as there are no hidden agendas between EST and its members/shareholders.

throttle and the forged steel con-rod and crankshaft are just a few of the special features that make this product long-lasting and super-efficient.
TIPS • Ensure the right product is used for the application • A store should have an economy range and a value range to offer for each of the three types of diamond blades (segmented, turbo and Conrim). • Most diamond blades manufactured for angle grinder use, are designed for dry cutting. • Blades used only for wet cutting are indicated that way and should not be used dry. • Never sell or use diamond tools that are not made to recognized international safety standards. • Make sure you only give up on the life of the product if you choose to sell or purchase cheap products. • When a segment is over-heating - discolouring to black and/ or blue on the segment or blade, stop using it. It is too hard for the material. • The Atlas Conrim is for ceramic tiles. The Norton Clipper range has blades designed for porcelain tiles. Distributor: Norton Saint-Gobain Tel: 011-961-2000
