Moreover, you want to stage these events in your own home or in your own backyard. Our database of decorators, DJ’s, florists and caterers – to name a few – will help minimize the stress of realizing your vision. At a corporate level: The life of an executive is not easy. Your to-do list is long and every task is urgent. Plus you have to schedule staff training, host local, regional and overseas associates, promote new products and services and organize special social and holiday functions. You need an event planner who offers a comprehensive service so that you can devote your time and energy to other corporate matters.
At the event management level: Event planners, designers, decorators and promoters are only a few of the busy bees behind the events your clients depend on you to organize. Often, finding the right place at the right price can be a challenge that consumes your time and saps your energy. So we will showcase places that are available for your events - from your backyard to hotels, restaurants, piers, rooftops, as well as banquet and conference halls. hether you want a change from your existing décor or you are decorating your new home, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the options available. NVPT aims to make the choices easy and most importantly, we want you to end up with a room you love.
with…... purple and bright pink bougainvillea, crotons, flamboyant pink poui and Scarlet Ibis. Our “callaloo” heritage with people from so many different parts of the world makes us appreciate all cultures and inspires us to use dramatic fabric and ethnic accent pieces from the different cultures to create OUR SPACE.
Your home should reflect your personality. Your favourite things and your grandmother’s cherished old table all have a place in your life and ought to be included in your décor.
So you need not be afraid of colour; colour will create an ambience in your home. It will ENERGIZE YOUR SPACE! Use colour, the light in your room and the pieces you’re re-using in your scheme to change your look.
So many of us are afraid to be adventurous and we decorate matching everything to a particular taste we have seen in a book. But even a contemporary scheme with clean lines is energized with an accent antique piece that can be refurbished to add drama or as a conversation piece. Most of us have furniture we still like and which is in good condition. Plus, the reality of having a limited budget, these pieces can be reused to work with a new décor and colour scheme. An old chair can be reupholstered in a modern fabric to make it “go with” your own fashionable “invogue” couch. As West Indians we are surrounded by vibrant colours. It is our heritage and it surrounds us

hy is it that we spend oodles of cash to renovate, build or buy impressive real estate and neglect to capitalize on its aesthetic potential? Hear me out. We will splurge on expensive rugs, paintings and other accessories. Here in Trinidad and Tobago we do our research and have ontrend bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, electronics, etc. With every decision we add layers of style and value. But then we compromise the entire package by subordinating the aesthetic importance of our windows. Little or none of your budget is planned for dressing your windows. Because of privacy and security we seldom leave the windows totally naked. We may, however, choose to take the purely functional route and dress the window with horizontal or vertical blinds. I personally do not like vertical blinds in a residential space. Unless you have a modern or edgy contemporary decor, by itself, horizontal blinds offer little in the way of aesthetics. I am partial to 2-inch horizontal wood blinds. They a warmer and classier alternative to the PVC or aluminium mini blinds. Window dressings make a positive difference to any décor. They soften the hard lines of the window, add colour, texture, and interest to the space. For successful design, your windows must be consciously harmonized with your décor. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean that every window must be shrouded with heavy layers of fabric and trim. All I am saying is a room without window treatments is like a well-dressed woman without jewellery. Think on it. Windows form the shell of your space along with the floors, walls, and ceilings. Windows can be treated simply to blend unobtrusively into the

MY PLACE YOUR SPACE
background, they can play a supporting role, or they can play a starring role. When your window fashions are starring they act as the focal point of the room; setting the mood and style of the space. While starring they must still relate to the rest of the space. They cannot star without a supporting cast. Ensure that your window fashion honours the feel, style and architectural details of the rest of your décor. Simply: don’t wear a ball gown to a pool party. Formal traditional spaces can handle elaborate swags and cascades dripping with heavy trim. A more transitional-styled space may be better suited to less trimming and simplified lines. Drapery panels in luscious, textured or interesting print fabrics will be a better alternative in a transitional space, for instance. Be aware of the impact of the colour, texture and pattern of your textiles. And please do not forget the window or the view. It does not have to be buried to make a statement. The supporting window covering will not demand attention, but will quietly make a definitive stylistic statement. The treatment should unify the space and add interest while following the mood and style set by the rest of the décor. Pay attention to the relationship of your window fashions to the floor, walls, ceiling, furnishings and accessories. As part of the background your window treatments will demand no particular attention to themselves. They are often very understated, simple, yet elegant and may be of similar colouring to the walls. They function as a backdrop to the rest of the décor. Drapery panels with similar colouring to the walls
are an example of a background treatment. Other elements in the room will have the opportunity to shine. Window treatments also impact on the exterior of your home. Yes you read right. How can your drapery impact on curb appeal? Your window treatment can work well with your interior dĂŠcor but work havoc with the exterior. Picture this lovely redorange exterior with lime green drapery showing through one window, teal in another, and chocolate brown in another. Besides looking totally dissonant from the outside, it conflicts with the architecture and it seriously discounts the aesthetic value of your home. Are you guilty? Step outside. What is the colour of your exterior; what is the colour of your window trim; do your treatments blend in or compete? Line your treatments in neutral colours that do not conflict with the exterior colour. Well-designed treatments will harmonise with the exterior. How do you rein in wasted potential? You do so by deliberately considering window treatments in your planning, budget and interior design. Vow to never under-dress your window or leave it naked. Just as there is a difference between just putting on clothes and actually dressing, recognise that we can capitalise on potential decorative equity by consciously and tastefully incorporating window fashions into our dĂŠcor. Browse magazines and the internet for inspiration and educate yourself on the possible styles, fabric, colour, textures. Dress those windows!!!
contract is a legally binding document between two parties. In event planning, the contract is a written agreement outlining specific terms and policies related to the even and stipulates that the client agrees to pay the event planner in exchange for services rendered. As a new event planner, you may be starting at a company that has contracts in place. If this is the case, take a close look at the language used. Do you understand all of the material? Can you answer questions a client may ask you about a contract? If however, you have to draft your own contract and don't know where to begin, the Internet is a great resource you can utilize to find contract templates for event planners. Some websites allow you to download templates for free. Although all event planning contracts have similar basic information, you can alter the ones your download to reflect the terms, policies and services that apply to your event-planning specialty. It is important to keep the terms of your contract clear, precise and current. To ensure that your contract is easy to read, use common language and avoid any legal jargon, which may confuse or mislead your clients.
Basic contract information An event-planning contract should have basic information regarding the event. If it applies, be sure to include the following in your contract: • • • • • • • • • • •
Date of event Time of event Location of event Vendor charges Cancellation policy including cancellations because of weather of other acts of nature No-show charges Guest count and final count due date Billing information Server charges, whether by the hour or in gratuities Parking and valet arrangements Your fees
Include any other relevant services and charges such as details of the menu, room setup, clean up, etc. The contract should be signed by both parties and initialed on every page, if it exceeds one page. Cancellations Occasionally, a client will have to cancel or postpone an event. Your cancellation policies will vary by the type of event-planning business you have. The event will also determine the penalties for cancellations and your contract should outline the terms and penalties.
pg 8
MY PLACE YOUR SPACE
For example: • Canceling within a week after signing the contract may have no penalties. • Canceling one month prior to the event may forfeit any deposits plus 25 percent of the estimated costs. • If after planning an event for a year or longer, a client cancels the event at the last minute, the penalty may stricter – forfeiture of the deposit and up to 50% of the total costs you quoted. Breaking a contract There are many reasons why a client may break a contract - relocation, a change in circumstances, death in the family or a loss of income. In some cases a client may fail to honor the deposit agreement outlined in the contract. This would also constitute breaking a contract. Unfortunately, even you may be forced to break a contract with a client because of overbooking, personal or business emergency or some other extreme and unavoidable situation. Of course, not before making every possible effort to keep your obligations to your client. In that case, return your client's deposit and offer to locate another event planner who will be willing to accept the project. If your client agrees to work with the new event planner, pass on all the relevant information to your replacement to ensure that the event is as successful as possible and your client/former client is satisfied. Event planning is very stressful and time-consuming but deeply satisfying when you can deliver everything your client signed for in your contract.
Far from the white sand of tropical beaches, tourists and chilled beverages served in coconut shells lies an oasis, free of airfare. While it sounds too good to be true, with a little diy and a green thumb, a backyard paradise is possible. From gardens to patios, fire pits and swimming pools, a summertime oasis is only as far as the door leading to the backyard and with some helpful tips and tricks, finding paradise is simple.
Define your space Any avid DIY-er or part-time handyman who is worth their weight in sawdust, knows that, before any deconstruction begins, a plan must be hammered out. When it comes to building a backyard oasis, the same principle apply.
summer, fall, and even winter,” said Zimmer, an employee of the familyowned Oakshade Nursery in Shamong.“Landscapes look great in April and May, but look dull and boring in July and August because people will purchase things that are in bloom. This results in a landscape that is very spring - heavy in flowering with no other interest the rest of the year.”
“Measure the space out and put it on paper; use simple circles. If you want to have an area that’s a vegetable garden, how big is that going to be?” said Steve Chepurny owner of Southampton Township’s Beechwood Landscape Architecture and Construction. “You want to be able to define those spaces and stay within the confines of what you find, so mapping something out on paper, where you can see it two dimensional, is important.”
In order to avoid the seasonal quandary, Zimmer suggests visiting local garden centers with employees who understand landscaping nuances and can offer suggestions that fit budgets accordingly.
Earn your green thumb From trees - ornamental, shade and evergreen - to shrubs, perennials, annuals and ground covering, incorporating plants into the landscape can wilt a gardener’s ambitions. According to Steve Zimmer, a landscape designer with 10 years of experience, homeowners should ask themselves two questions when considering vegetation: What do I want my property to look like and how much time and effort am I willing to put into its upkeep? “It’s all about picking the right complement of plants that can achieve that continuing interest through the landscape; not only in spring, but also in
pg 10 MY PLACE YOUR SPACE
“Google is great to look up stuff and get ideas, but listen to the experts and truly seasoned gardeners,” he said. “They will guide you in the right direction.” May flowers According to Susan Schlenger’s website, a successful landscape incorporates a host of different kinds of plants with factors such as, height, color and texture that impact the final product. Schlenger, who has over 15 years of experience in landscape design, suggests on her site, www.landscape-design-advice.com, using landscape trees - Japanese cedar, white birch or flowering dogwood - to add height. Evergreen shrubs can be used as a background for colorful perennials, which only bloom once a year, and taller plants, such as a butterfly bush, can create additional interest.
Embrace the outdoors A paradise isn’t only palm trees and coconuts, or in the case of New Jersey, azaleas and fringe trees. A paradise encourages individuals to abandon the living room couch, embrace the backyard and relax in the comfort of their own oasis. A simple grill and outdoor furniture, which are available in a variety of elements including aluminum, wicker or teak, aren’t the only accessories to add to a deck or patio, however. “Integration of fire is the biggest craze that’s been going on for the past five years,” Chepurny said. “Whether they be gas-fed tiki torches, fire bowls or fire pits - wood-burning or natural gas-fed - people really want to be outside and they want to enjoy the ambiance of being outside.” Exterior TVs have come down in price as well, according to Chepurny. Make a splash What’s an oasis without a crystalline body of water? Considering that Jersey’s summers keep getting hotter, a pool may be the final flourish needed to perfect that backyard paradise. Before buying that pool raft, homeowners should consider what type of pool suits their individual needs, fits within their space and adheres to local zoning regulations. While different types of construction - vinyl-lined, fiberglass or concrete - depend upon available funding, vinyl-lined pools provide homeowners with the most pool for their money, according to Tom Decker, the construction and sales manager at Atlas Pools and Spas, located on the Black Horse Pike in Cardiff. Vinyl-lined, unlike fiberglass pools, which are reasonably limited in size and shape, are not only affordable but also create the free-form look of concrete pools. While concrete pools provide the homeowner with a flexibility in size, shape and depth - considering that it is formed in the backyard - the expense is one reason individuals opt for other pool options. However, Decker encourages homeowners to research their town’s particular
zoning regulations before planning too far ahead in the pool process. After understanding zoning laws, identifying property lines and measuring the space available within a yard, installing a pool takes about four weeks, with ideal weather conditions, according to Decker. “The greatest thing from exercise to family unity and keeping the kids home; there’s nothing better than having a backyard swimming pool,” he said. “It gives us an opportunity, each and every day, to go out back and have our own little paradise.”
• What's the decor like? Does it fit your style and wedding colors? Will you have to spend a lot of money on flowers and decorations to make it beautiful? • Do they have an in-house caterer, and do you like that food? (While an in-house caterer can be easier and cheaper, sometimes the food is not as beautiful as the room. So make sure you taste it!) Do they have a limitation on which outside caterers you can use? • Do they have adequate coat check and bathroom facilities? • Is the wedding venue wheelchair accessible? If not, are there many stairs to climb? How close is the parking to the ceremony and reception rooms? • What's the cancellation policy? • Is there a payment schedule? What kind of deposits are required? • Are there any hidden costs? (Before you sign the contract, read it carefully.) • What are the overtime charges? • Do they have a liquor license? • Will they allow you to bring your own liquor? (This is usually cheaper, even with the customary corkage fee.) • Is there room in the wedding venue for a band and/or dancing? • Does the wedding venue already own a sound system with adequate speakers or will that need to be rented? • Is there a space for the bride and groom to change and/or relax? • Where will you take photographs? Is there a park nearby, or do the coordinators have recommended spots on the grounds?
pg 12 MY PLACE YOUR SPACE
• Who will be supervising and troubleshooting before the day of your wedding? Who will be supervising and troubleshooting on the day of your wedding? Can you meet them now? • Where can your guests park? Are there extra fees for parking? Do they have valet parking? • Is the wedding venue convenient to public transportation, especially in big cities? How long will it take your guests to get there? • Especially in museums or private clubs, are there limitations on decorations? Do they limit food and drinks to only certain areas of the wedding venue? • Are candles or other open flames allowed? • If its an outdoor location, do they have any backup plans for inclement weather? If not, is there a place that you can put up a tent? When Looking at Separate Wedding Reception Venues and Ceremony Locations • How far is it from one location to the other? • Do the two places have the same level of formality and a coordinating style? • Do they both accommodate about the same number of guests? • Does the wedding reception venue have any experience with weddings from your ceremony location? When Looking for Wedding Venues for Both Ceremony and Reception • Do they own enough chairs for the ceremony, or will they need to be rented? • Does the wedding venue have an entirely separate area for the ceremony? {It is not uncommon that while the guests are at the cocktail hour, the caterers will transform the ceremony room into the dining room and/or dance floor.)
• If not, how long does it typically take for the staff to change over the room? Hopefully, these questions will help you cover the basics while you're looking at wedding venues. In your search for a wedding venue, there will probably be even more questions that arise for you personally. For example, you may want the menu to reflect your heritage, or with a large wedding party, you may need ample parking for limousines.
our wedding guest’s experience begins the moment that the envelope is received. Handwriting makes it personal and special, much like the guest whom you have chosen to share your day with.
A few ambitious brides have already confessed to me that they have considered looking for a fountain pen and attempting to teach themselves the art in order to cut down on this cost – but be warned, it’s a little more difficult (and a lot more time consuming) than it looks!
It may seem a little old-fashioned in an era of digital printing, but weddings are one of the few places where tradition truly lends to the event experience and in recent times, the tradition of calligraphy is finding a comeback in a big way.
Most local brides and grooms hand deliver their invitations, so luckily the cost for fully addressed envelopes can be cut down, as only the recipient’s names are necessary. The calligraphy font can be customized to complement or match up with the font used for your printed invitation (once your calligrapher is willing and able!) More ornate fonts can be chosen for a lavish and formal event, while a simpler font without flourishing would be a good choice for a casual affair.
Calligraphy can provide a personalized dimension to a number of aspects of your wedding, from menu cards to dessert signs, and even written vows. But of course, if your budget does not allow for all of these little personal touches, priority can be given to the items that will make the greatest impact, such as your envelopes and placecards. The experience of seeing your own name beautifully handwritten just for you makes the event all the more memorable.
Whether you are planning a contemporary wedding with quirky pinterest-inspired elements, or a totally classic affair with every tradition in place, calligraphy is a beautiful art that can reflect, and enhance, the tone of your special day.

or the wedding ceremony that's everything you ever wanted, you must choose an officiant who will set the perfect tone. So, do your research and choose the right one for your special occasion. Non-secular A Justice of the Peace can officiate at your wedding, whether or not you want to get married at the registration office. You can find a listing in the phone book or ask for a referral from a couple who had a Justice of the Peace officiate at their wedding. Arrange meetings with at least two so that you can compare their procedures and policies and their willingness to work with any special plans you may have, such as an unusual program, composing our own vows, the location or venue, etc.). At these meetings you will see if you are comfortable with their personalities – a crucial element for a wedding. Alternatively, you can ask a friend or relative to officiate, once they have the required state certification.
Secular It's easier if you are getting married in a house of worship where you are a member. You meet with your religious leader to discuss availability, share your plans and ask advice. If you are not religious but want to get married in a church or by a religious officiant, you should call to find out if it is allowed. Some may only agree if you are willing to attend pre-marriage counseling sessions or take introductory instruction classes to become a member. Remember that every officiant has his own style. Attending the worship service for a few weeks can be a window into his manner of dealing with people – something you may not see at a pre-arranged meeting. A crucial question to consider is if a religious officiant is flexible enough to work with any plans that may veer from the norm. This aspect of planning your wedding can be stressful but it is necessary if you want the happy and memorable wedding you've always dreamed of.

Its towering arch of bamboo stalks, reminiscent of grand cathedrals, is perfect for a variety of events - weddings, photo shoots, picnics and gatherings of family and friends. Not only is the Bamboo Cathedral growing in popularity with wedding planners and photographers, but also as a must-visit destination for tourists. Golf Course –Tucker Valley What does the CDA do with 82 acres of land in Tucker Valley? It maintains the Chaguaramas Golf Course, complete with 2,900 yards of undulating terrain, a 9-hole course, a club house and the best driving range in the country, where both amateur and professional golfers can practice and perfect their skills. The facility also caters to nature lovers who enjoy observing the diverse vegetation and resident animal life. Like many of the other CDA venues, the Golf Course facility is also ideal for weddings and social events. Recently, the CDA released a Request For Proposal for the redevelopment and operation of the Golf Course. The plan is to expand the existing Golf Course into an 18-hole facility and build a luxury resort and spa.

Chacachacare The leprosarium and home base to one thousand US soldiers are no more. However, the largest and most westerly off-shore island of Chacachacare still attracts local and foreign visitors to its striking views, Bocas Lighthouse and 7 beaches, apart from Chacachacare Bay, which is the main landing area. The clear and shallow Perriquier Bay is ideal for children. The deep La Tinta Bay is a diver’s paradise, while sea bathers of any age can enjoy Sanders Bay. Cocos Bay is noted for its pebbled bed, Bulmer’s Bay is stony and campers favour Rust Bay. Finally, Bande du Sud Bay sits on the southern side of the island and borders the Salt Water Pond, which is too saline for bathing but is a naturalist’s delight. All of the beaches of Chacachacare are accessible by boat and water taxis are available all day from a private pier in Chaguaramas. Blue Grotto Caves – Gaspar Grande Island Take an enjoyable ride to Gaspar Grande with CDA’s certified tour guides pointing out historical features and videos to whet your appetite for the experience to come. Every step of the journey is an adventure: the walk way, the signs with interesting facts about the island and the Caves and the spacious visitor centre overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Paria. A metal staircase takes you down into the cave and provides a safe and comfortable vantage point from which to explore the underground wonder and learn about the existing life forms. Special lighting plus sunlight seeping through tiny fissures highlight the breath-taking colours of the Blue Grotto Caves and reflect them into the crystal clear pool, giving the impression that you are engulfed in aquamarine. The cave is also popular for photographers who want to capture its natural beauty and to use it as a backdrop to their photo creations.
and relaxing experience of sailing, once you observe all the safety protocols. Boardwalk On May 3rd 2013, the CDA launched its most recent project – the Boardwalk. With its two decks and winding beachfront walkway, it runs along the Chaguaramas shoreline. It offers multiple areas for adults to stroll, sit, relax and chat, while children frolic safely. Creative souls can slip into spaces and create to their heart’s content. The natural ambience of the Boardwalk makes it the perfect setting for fashion shows, weddings, photo shoots, product launches, outdoor theatre, concerts, children’s activities – face painting, puppet shows, etc., and big screen features such as sports matches, movies and karaoke. Plus, the paved and lighted parking bordering the deck is a huge bonus for drivers. With all these features, plus free Wi-Fi and continuous security patrols, the Boardwalk is Trinidad’s newest hotspot. Take note though - this is not the end of the Boardwalk. Plans are afoot for Phase 2 and Phase 3, each with even more features and facilities. It is obvious that the Chaguaramas Development Authority is realizing its long-term vision for the western peninsula.
“To be the premier provider of the ultimate customer experience in a world-class Eco-tourism destination, business and entertainment centre”.
Chaguaramas Bay - Sailing Sailing may not be the activity of choice for the average Trinbagonian, until they try it. But the CDA has ensured that sailing is available and safe for anyone with an adventurous spirit and a love for the sea. With all the venues at your disposal in the expansive western peninsula, Chaguaramas Bay offers the fun

1. Create a “shot list” One of the most helpful tips I’ve been given about Wedding Photography is to get the couple to think ahead about the shots they’d like you to capture on the day and compile a list so that you can check them off. This is particularly helpful with the family shots. There’s nothing worse than getting the photos back and realizing you didn’t photograph the happy couple with grandma. 2. Family photo coordinator I find the family photo part of the day can be quite stressful. People are going everywhere, you’re unaware of the different family dynamics at play and people are in a festive spirit (because they have been drinking a few spirits). It gets to the point where it is quite chaotic. Get the couple to nominate a family member (or one for each side of the family), who can be the “director” of the shoot. They can round up everyone, help get them in the shot and keep things moving so that the couple can get back to the party.
memory cards. Think about alternative routes to get to the venues on time and get an itinerary for the full day so that you know what’s happening next. If you can, attend the rehearsal for the ceremony where you’ll gather a lot of information about possible positions to shoot from, the lighting, the order of the ceremony, etc. 5. Set expectations with the couple Show them your work/style. Find out what they want to achieve, how many shots they want, what key things they want to be recorded, how the shots will be used (digital, print etc). If you’re charging them for the event, make sure you have the agreement on fees up front. 6. Turn off the sound on your camera Beeps during speeches, the kiss and vows don’t add to the event. Switch off the sound before hand and keep it off. 7. Shoot the small details
3. Scout the location Before the big day, visit the locations of the different places where you’ll be shooting. While I’m sure most pros don’t do this – I find it really helpful to know where we’re going, have an idea of a few positions for shots and know how the light might come into play. For one or two weddings, I even visited locations with the couples and took a few test shots, which made made nice engagement photos. 4. Preparation is key So much can go wrong on the day that you need to be well prepared. Have a backup plan (in case of bad weather), batteries charged and blank

Photograph rings, backs of dresses, shoes, flowers, table settings, menus etc. – these provide an extra dimension to the finished album. Flick through a wedding magazine in a news stand for a little inspiration.
8. Use two cameras Buy, rent or borrow an extra camera for the day and set it up with a different lens. I try to shoot with one wide-angle lens, which is perfect for candid shots and in tight spaces (particularly in the preparation stage of the day and before the ceremony) and a longer lens - between 70 and 2oomm – can be handy if you can get your hands on one. 9. Consider a second photographer Having a second photographer is be a great backup strategy. It means less moving around during the ceremony and speeches and allows one photographer to capture the formal shots and the other to get candid shots. It also takes a little pressure off you to be the only one to get every shot. 10. Be Bold but not obtrusive Timidity won’t get you “the shot”; sometimes you need to be bold to capture a moment. However, timing is everything and thinking ahead to get in the right position for key moments are important to avoid disrupting the event. During the ceremony, I try to move around at least 4-5 times but time this to coincide with songs, sermons or longer readings. During the formal shots be bold, know what you want and ask for it from the couple and their wedding party. You’re driving the show at this point of the day and need to keep things moving. 11. Learn how to use diffused light It is important to know how to bounce a flash or diffuse it is. You’ll find that in many churches the light is very low. If you’re allowed to use a flash (and some churches don’t allow it), decide
and be ready to take the shot without having them stand around for too long. I found the best way to get everyone in place is to get the the bride and groom there and have a couple of helpers to herd everyone else in that direction. 18. Fill Flash When shooting outside after a ceremony or during the posed shots, you’ll probably want to keep your flash attached to give a little fill in flash. I tend to dial it back a little (a stop or two), so that shots are not blown out. Fill in flash is a necessary, particularly in back-lit or midday shooting conditions, where there can be a lot of shadow. 19. Continuous shooting mode Having the ability to shoot a lot of images fast is very handy on a wedding day, so switch your camera to continuous shooting mode and use it. Sometimes, the shot that really captures the moment is the one you take a second after the formal or posed shot when everyone is relaxing, 20. Expect the unexpected
if bouncing the the flash will work (remember if you bounce off a colored surface it will add a colored cast to the picture), or if you should buy a flash diffuser to soften the light. If you can’t use a flash you may either use a fast lens at wide apertures or bump up the ISO. A lens with image stabilization might also help. 12. Shoot in RAW
14 Consider your backgrounds One of the challenges of weddings is that people are constantly moving around as a result, the background of your shots are always changing. Particularly with the formal shots, scope out the area where they’ll be taken ahead of time, to identify the best backgrounds. Ideally, you will look for uncluttered areas and shady spots out of direct sunlight where guests are unlikely to wander. 15. Don’t discard your “mistakes” The temptation with digital photography is to check images as you go and immediately delete those that don’t work. The problem with this is that you might get rid of some of the more interesting and useable images. Keep in mind that you can crop and manipulate images later, to give you some more arty/abstract looking shots that can add real interest to the completed album.
Many photographers feel that they don’t have the time for shooting in RAW (due to extra processing) but a wedding is one occasion when it can be particularly useful as it allows much more flexibility to manipulate shots after taking them. Weddings can present photographers with tricky lighting, which makes it necessary to manipulate exposure and white balance after the fact – RAW will help with this considerably. 13. Display your shots at the reception One of the great things about digital photography is its immediacy as a medium. One of the fun things I’ve seen more and more photographers doing recently is taking a computer to the reception, uploading shots taken earlier in the day and letting the couple look at them.
16. Change your perspective Get a little creative with your shots. While the majority of the images in the finished album will probably be fairly “normal” or formal poses, make sure that you mix things up a little by taking shots from down low, up high, at wide angles etc. 17. Group shots One thing that I’ve done at every wedding that I’ve photographed is attempt to photograph everyone who is in attendance in the one shot. I’ve done this by arranging for a place where I can position myself high above everyone right after the ceremony. This might mean using a tall ladder, standing on a balcony or even climbing on a roof. The beauty of take shots from a height is that you can fit a lot of people in one shot. The key is to get everyone to the selected spot quickly
One more piece of advice that someone gave me on my own wedding day, “Things will go wrong – but they can be the best parts of the day”. In every wedding that I’ve participated in, something went wrong with the day. The best man couldn't find the ring, the rain came pouring down just as the ceremony ended, the groom forgot to zip up his fly, the flower girl decided to sit down in the middle of the aisle or the bride couldn't remember her vows…. These moments can feel a little panicky at the time – but it’s they are the moments that can actually make a day and give the bride and groom unforgettable memories. Attempt to capture them and you could end up with some fun images that sum up the day really well. I still remember the first wedding I photographed where the bride and groom's car crashed into a Tram on the way to the park where we were going to take photos. The bride was in tears and the groom stressed out – but after we’d all calmed down, people began to see some of the funny sides to the moment. We even took a couple of shots before driving on to the park. They were among everyone’s favorites. 21. Have Fun Weddings are about celebrating; they should be fun. The more fun you have as the photographer the more relaxed those you are photographing will be. As the photographer, if you smile you will encourage others to relax and smile too. (Warning: I always come home from photographing weddings with a sore jaw and cheeks because of my smiling strategy).

The newly re-opened Magdalena Grand Beach Resort in Tobago
ccording to tradition, the first benches on both sides are always reserved for the closest relatives. The bride’s family and friends sit on the left side in the church and the bridegroom’s family and friends on the right. Although parents of the bride and groom may be divorced and perhaps also remarried, they still have their roles at their child’s wedding. If the relationships are amicable, divorced parents and their new spouses may sit beside each other. If not, they can sit a few rows behind. Once guests are seated, the bridegroom’s family arrives and sits on the first pew on the right. The bride's family follows and occupies the first pew on the left. Then the bride and her father walk in procession to meet the bridegroom who is waiting at the altar. Other considerations Silence in the church reenforces the significance of the wedding vows and helps to create and maintain an atmosphere of reverence and respect. In general, it shows a lack of reverence and respect

to speak loudly in a church and speaking softly is especially important during a wedding ceremony. A ceremony usually takes about an hour and during this time a all attention is trained on the bride and groom. It is difficult for small children to sit still for long periods. They may get restless a begin to cry. To, avoid disrupting the ceremony, parents of babies, toddlers and young children may want to consider leaving them with a babysitter. Mobile phones have become so much a part of our lives that sometimes, we forget that it is inappropriate and insensitive to keep them on at certain times. A wedding is definitely one of those times when we should be switched them off or set them to vibrate. While taking photos is integral to creating a visual record of a wedding. Some officiants may requests that no photographs be taken during the ceremony, in which case the bridge and groom will pose for photographs at the alter, after the ceremony. Others may allow only the designated photographer to take photos.
he Port of Spain Central Lions Cultural Centre was first conceived over 40 years ago as a multipurpose centre for the citizens of Port of Spain replacing the Princess Building which had been destroyed, and at the same time providing funds to help the less fortunate in the Port of Spain area. In its 40 years of existence it has seen many changes but still remains a centre for use in the wider community. From its inception it became very popular for dances, particularly at Carnival time. Today this is no longer the case as the carnival dances of today have more or less outgrown the Centre, which has a capacity for approximately 2,000 persons, and there are only a few all inclusive fetes. The Port of Spain Central Lions Club which manages the Centre, recognizing the move away from the rental of the venue for dances and considering the complaints of our neighbors about the noises, we took the decision to concentrate on smaller functions such as seminars, graduation ceremonies, weddings, dinners, in house cook-outs etc., by providing the facilities for these, virtually creating a one stop shop. Our packages include up to 500 padded chairs and slipcovers, 25 banquet tables and 40 straight tables all with table cloths, a fountain and a podium. Also, there are plant pedestals, a bridal arch, and a raised platform for the bridal party, screens, a variety of potted plants and “Princess Chairs, for the bride and groom. All of this comes with two security guards, and one armed. The Centre itself has been redone with porcelain tiles on the wall and the floor. There are two drink bars, a food bar equipped with hot water and the already adequate ladies and gent’s toilets with toilet attendents have also been upgraded to first class standards. The Garden has been fully landscaped, and well kept, with the addition of a gazebo to conduct ceremonies, a fountain and waterfall with a bridge over the fountain, which transforms the ideal photo backdrop for wedding photos. Finally, we wish to remind the general public that in keeping with our constitution, all funds raised through the Centre goes back to the Community and not the Club.
Every bride wants to look her best for her wedding day, but with all the wedding planning to-dos, sometimes it's tough to stick as closely as you want to your workout regimen. Luckily, there are a few easy shortcuts you can take to look trim in your wedding dress without hitting the gym every day or driving yourself crazy with diet fads.
Flatter Your Figure Though alterations will ensure your dress fits, choosing a wedding gown that shows off your best assets (and camouflages your less-than-fab spots) will make sure it flatters. Trying to hide your hips? Go with a romantic empire waist gown or a strapless, full-skirted style. Want to suck it all in? A corseted ball gown is a great option to show off your bust, whittle your waist, and hide hips and thighs. And if you want to show off your curves (or create some), try a mermaid-style gown. A good bet for every body type: an A-line silhouette, which fits at the bust and waist with a skirt that gently flares out from the hips.
you can find garments that won't cling to your gown's fabric but will still nip and tuck you in all the right places.
Get a Good Support System Undergarments that fit well are key to a sleek silhouette. To avoid the dreaded bra bulge and create the right amount of cleavage (nothing that will scandalize the grandmas), get a professional bra fitting to be sure you're wearing the right size. Then, buy a few bras - check the store's policy, but you can generally return them with the tags - so you can try them on with your gown and find exactly the right one.
Second, try to keep your back straight. Again, the secret is in your shoulders. You should feel like there's a straight line dropping from your shoulders to your hips. If one starts to get ahead of the other, shift yourself and realign. Remember, it's not about standing still all the time - that's actually more likely to make you slouch! Instead, shift your weight as it feels comfortable to do so, keeping the position of your shoulders and hips in mind from time to time.
If any part of the lower half of your gown is fitted, invest in some good shapewear. Our favorites are made by Spanx - they're lightweight, breathable, and come in tons of colors and styles. They're also available in different materials, so
Give Your Height a Boost We're not going to lie and say they're comfortable, but wearing heels is one of the simplest ways to appear thinner. Think about it: Say you're normally five feet, four inches and you weigh 140 pounds.
pg 24 MY PLACE YOUR SPACE
Stand Up for Yourself Proper posture can make a big difference in how you look - and don't worry, it doesn't mean you have to stand at attention all day long. A couple of simple tips can keep you upright and looking svelte. First, keep your shoulders back. If you find your shoulders slouching forward (totally natural if you're tired or nervous), shrug them up toward your ears a couple of times to loosen yourself up and shift your shoulders back.
Put on a pair of two-inch heels and suddenly you're five feet, six inches - but you still weigh 140 pounds! It's not just about having longer legs; heels instantly trick the eye into reapportioning your weight over a taller frame. Worried about foot fatigue? Skip the spindly stilettos and go for something with more support, like a wedge heel, and don't push it too high no more than three inches. Strike the Right Pose Your wedding photos are how you'll remember your wedding day, so ensure you'll remember that you looked fabulous. Keep your shoulders back, and flatter your jawline by pushing your chin forward. If you can, keep your body slightly turned - you'll look slimmer than if you're looking straight at the camera. The most ideal look is to tilt your shoulders toward the photographer with your hips on an angle, which makes your waist and hips look instantly narrower. Especially key for brides, hold your arms slightly away from your body rather than pressing them against your sides. It can be tough (especially if you've been holding that bouquet all day) but it makes a huge difference. While it seems like a lot to keep track of, don't forget that you can practise! With all of those prewedding parties, you're going to have your picture taken pretty often- take advantage so that on your wedding day you can give 'em your best shots.
ingredient? Honey. The golden sweet stuff has natural antibiotic properties and leaves skin noticeably soft and moist. Apply about a tablespoon to your face (avoiding the eye area) and rest for 10 minutes while it dries and then rinse with warm water. (Honey can also help blisters heal – use it as you would an antibiotic ointment.)
1. Count Your Blessings In a study conducted by Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., of the University of California, Davis, people who listed five things they were grateful for each day in a journal fell asleep faster, slept for longer periods of time, and also woke up feeling more refreshed than those who didn’t keep a gratitude journal. 2. Sea Salt Bath Recover from a long day with an easy detox; Add a cup of sea salt to a warm bath and soak. The salt draws impurities out of the skin. To make it even more rejuvenating, sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oil in the water and light some candles. Remember to silence your phone unless you want to be interrupted by incessant ringing. 3. Change Up Your Nightcap Too much alcohol can disrupt your sleep patterns but tart cherry juice is practically a melatonin cocktail. To score the benefits, drink a mixture of 2 tablespoons of tart cherry juice concentrate and 8 ounces of water twice a day. Make sure it's Montmorency cherry — it has six times the melatonin of Balaton tart cherry. 4. Sprinkle Some Lavender In numerous experiments, subjects have reported sounder sleep when exposed to the scent. Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil on a cloth and slip under your pillow; use a diffuser; or iron pillowcases with lavender-scented water.

5. Breathe Deeply Breathe more mindfully. Take a deep breath inhale deeply through the nostrils and exhale slowly. This simple action blocks the stress response and cues your body to relax, making you less likely to get riled up and more likely to think clearly. Breathe deeply before you respond to anything life throws your way, and notice how doing it changes your reactions. 6. Honey Mask Build a little relaxation time into your nightly routine with a DIY moisturizing mask. The secret
7. Take a Mental Vacation When you need to reduce stress, find a cozy spot in your room and treat yourself to a vacation that’s all in your head: Close your eyes and imagine a relaxing place, such as a beach or a mountain view. Visualize the sights and inhale the scents. The more vivid a picture you paint in your mind, the more your body will respond to the invitation to relax. 8. Mantra Meditation To Western ears, "mantra" is synonymous with "catchphrase" or "mission statement." But mantra is a tool that's been used for thousands of years to help cultivate peace of mind — something we could all use a little more of. Choose a word or phrase that is meaningful and melodious — such "love," "peace," or "amen" (or whatever resonates with you) - and repeat it silently or audibly whenever you need a gentle reminder to savor the moment.
