viva Cartagena! Creating ONE Life’s inaugural fashion feature, “Urban Cool,” truly did take a village— of talent from all over the world. With stunning locations already scouted, we flew our team to Cartagena to get to work: a photographer from Los Angeles, a hair and makeup expert from Bogota, a stylist from Palm Beach, a model from New York City and the latest luxury fashions from the showrooms of New York and Cartagena. See the breathtaking results of our global effort on page 42.

Tom Austin

“Living Art,” p. 32 In this issue, Miami native Tom offers a peek inside the partnership of developer Eduardo Costantini and artist Jeff Koons at Oceana Bal Harbour. Tom has also penned articles for the Miami Herald, Men’s Journal and People. Look out for his new book, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of Miami Beach, this year.

Michele Meyer

Richard’s passion for photography began at an early age, after he snapped his first photo of the statue of Atlas in New York City’s Rockefeller Center with his Kodak Instamatic. A decade later, he decided to turn his childhood passion into a career. Richard has a knack for connecting with his subjects, transcending both geographic and cultural barriers. “I love the collaborative nature of working with people,” he says. “Whether I’m shooting celebrities or models, or using real-life subjects in location settings, I need to find the best way to relate to them,” he says. “This has to happen. In the flow of the stories we’re shooting, and to tie the entire story together, all the elements must come together.” Traveling the globe on editorial and advertising assignments for clients ranging from Vogue to Sony, Richard says everything boils down to the team on hand. “The shoot is only as good as its weakest link, and all the artists need to be on the same page and focused,” he says. “Model/ subject, stylist, hair, makeup and set designers are like musicians in a symphony. We create visuals like an orchestra creates music.”

“Haute Havens,” p. 60 Founding fashion editor at Visa’s Luxury and longtime contributor to Allure and Women’s Wear Daily, Michele has covered the catwalks of Paris, Milan, New York and Los Angeles. Of pulling together the world’s best destination boutiques for this issue, she says: “I lived, breathed and mentally shopped those stores, spending a year’s income—fortunately, just in my imagination.”

Sean McCaughan

“The Miami River Heats Up,” p. 116 Sean is the editor of Curbed Miami, where he has been covering local real estate, architecture and design for the past three years. A native of Miami, he is looking forward to the metamorphosis of the Miami River, which he affectionately calls “a watery highway through the urban jungle.”

EXPLORE It was Apollo 8 Commander Frank Borman who said, “Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.” Our passion to pioneer and experience the unknown is what satisfies our true sense of adventure. And in this issue of ONE Life, we take you on a journey around the world to inspire your own exploration of new places, tastes, travels, philanthropy, design and more. We tantalize your taste buds with flavors from the most intriguing restaurants in key cities around the world; Sydney’s The Dining Room, Cartagena’s Vera and London’s Spring are just a few showcased in the coming pages. Adding more stamps to our passport, we venture into the heart of philanthropy in Africa and savor the finest wines from all over the world that are on every collector’s hot list. Each culture has a way of distinguishing itself through fashion. For our debut editorial fashion spread, we chose a location in stunning Cartagena, Colombia. We also explore destination boutiques near and far, from Texas and Florida to Milan, Paris and São Paolo. At home in South Florida, I am delighted by the endless new activities and bold transformations taking place. Blessed with beautiful weather to bask in year round, our cityscape is being enhanced by celebrated global architects, and we are emerging as one of the most culturally rich areas in the world. One visionary making waves in Miami is Argentine art cognoscente Eduardo Costantini. We look at his latest project, Oceana Bal Harbour, and discuss the Jeff Koons sculptures and diverse collection of impressive works that will adorn the residential masterpiece. We also offer a glimpse into Costantini’s lifelong dedication to the art community

and how he is interweaving art and real estate. With a renaissance taking place on the Miami River, we examine the renewal of an area rich with history. The river is now poised to elevate Miami to that of the world’s preeminent river cities, including London, Paris and Hong Kong. Moving luxury inland, the $1 billion Metropica mixed-use project in Sunrise is a refreshing alternative to city living, offering the natural beauty of its neighboring Florida Everglades as well as an abundance of shopping, entertainment, dining and nightlife. It’s sure to be a destination that defines the modern way of life. As we celebrate the spring and summer months, I encourage you to travel the least trodden path, ignite your passions, expand your horizons and live this one life to the fullest. Remember, life is truly your own exploration.

A Worthy Tale If there were a Golden Age of children’s book illustrations, it would be anchored firmly in the beloved works of A.A. Milne, illustrated by E.H. Shepard, and the prolific queen of the animal kingdom herself, Beatrix Potter. Close your eyes and you’ll certainly be able to visualize the lush pen and ink or watercolor illustrations that accompanied their whimsical and universal fables: a doe-eyed bear, paw stuck in a honey jar here; a naughty rabbit up to no good in a garden there. These iconic characters have stood the test of time, continuing to mark the fleeting passage of childhood as lovingly now as they did a century ago. In London recently, nostalgia proved valuable at the English Literature, History, Children’s Books and Illustrations auction—with Pooh taking top honors. The illustration For a Long Time They Looked at the River Beneath Them... from the book The House at Pooh Corner tripled its pre-sale estimate, selling for nearly $500,000 (£314,500)—a new world record for an original book illustration sold at auction. “The illustration is central to the Winnie-the-Pooh books, and in turn has become one of the most familiar cultural references of the twentieth century,” said Dr. Philip Errington, director of Sotheby’s Books and Manuscripts. “It goes to show that the very finest book illustrations are becoming increasingly recognized as works of art in their own right.” The piece—which had been in private collection for nearly 40 years—appears in the book’s sixth chapter, in which Pooh invents the game “Poohsticks” and which has a strong message of friendship and forgiveness. The previous record had been set in 2008, when the final scene from Beatrix Potter’s The Rabbits’ Christmas Party sold for nearly $450,000 (£289,250). Potter was also represented alongside Milne and Shepard in London, with her A Rabbit’s Tea Party fetching $115,000 (£74,500).

Old Masters, New Again

Every so often, a news item emerges with a familiar theme: From the shadows, an old Master

painting is rediscovered, its value and glory reverberating throughout the art world. Often, these restitution stories have to do with recovering looted artwork stolen during wars, or following a natural disaster. Other times, rediscovering a masterpiece is simply a matter of luck. Such was the case with Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, an oil landscape by Romantic artist John Constable. In 2013, the work was purchased for a tidy sum of $5,212 when it was believed to have been painted by an astute fan of Constable. Just a year and a half later, a restoration unveiled the fact that it was a Constable original that had been retouched. The piece went on to fetch a prodigious $5.2 million. Restitution has always been a big, if tricky, business, but lately the market is experiencing a healthy bump. “Masterpieces are emerging across the collecting categories at Sotheby’s,” says James Mackie, senior director of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art department in London. “The market is particularly strong at the moment.” While there are no concrete figures to support the number of masterpieces that emerge from the global shadows, dramatic discoveries continue to pop up in the news. In February, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia announced the discovery of two previously unknown Cezanne pieces— a graphite drawing and a graphite drawing with watercolor—hidden beneath the brown paper backing of two Cezanne watercolors that had undergone a routine conservation treatment. El Greco, the central figure of the Spanish Renaissance, also found his way into the news recently as his legacy marched into its 400th year: A portrait of what was thought to be Saint Peter sold in 2012 for $1.26 million as a work loosely “attributed by El Greco.” Since then, it was authenticated as a fully autographed work and firmed up to be a depiction of Saint Joseph rather than Saint Peter. At the end of January, the work more than doubled its last price, reaching $2.74 million. The early history of this painting remains mysterious, as is often the case with rediscovered Masters, although it is thought to have spent the better part of the last century in the possession of a French collector.

UPCOMING SALES

Sotheby’s set records in London on the evening of February 3 with its highly anticipated Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist Art auction, culminating in a grand total of $280.18 million—the highest total of any auction held in London. At its centerpiece was a collection of five works by Claude Monet, whose total sales rang in at $55.74 million. Among the works was Le Grand Canal, painted in 1908, and Les Peupliers à Giverny, an homage to the iconic poplars that dot the French landscape, painted in 1887. “You can almost hear that ripple of the breeze, the lovely shimmering wall of leaves,” said Ann Dumas, curator of the Royal Academy of Arts. “We can see it as a summation

In the business of creating memorable experiences, celebrity party planner Colin Cowie aims to instill every one of his special events with a touch of magic.

By Jean Nayar

The always in-demand Cowie loves styling events for important causes—like this gorgeous “starry night” African-themed party for the Ubuntu Education Fund, at Gotham Hall in NYC (left).

Trotting around the globe is standard operating procedure for style guru Colin Cowie. Known for masterminding chic events and glamorous weddings around the world, the 52year-old South African–born party planner is the visionary behind the perfect parties of rich and famous Hollywood A-list clients like Tom Cruise, Jennifer Aniston, John Travolta, Elton John, Quincy Jones and Michael Jordan. From flowers to food to decor, he and his team handle every detail to make their dream parties unforgettable. “We start with the DNA of the people and create a magical experience, focusing on what guests will touch, taste, smell, feel and hear,” says Cowie. “As of late, I’m into mono-floral arrangements all in the same color—one vessel filled with white tulips, the next white calla lilies. “When it comes to food, farm-to-table isn’t just the biggest trend in restaurants right now, but it’s also the hottest focus in events,” he adds. “Today’s savvy clients aren’t just asking for organic greens—they are asking for the exact farm that their greens come from.” The author of several books, including Colin Cowie Wedding Chic and Dinner After Dark, Cowie also has license agreements with a slew of corporate partners, including most recently online retailer Blue Nile, which will launch his new line of wedding jewelry this spring. 20

Cowie may be in demand all over the world, but he always makes time to lend his talents to causes dear to his heart—like the Ubuntu Education Fund back in his home country. The organization provides household stability, health and educational services to children in need in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and Cowie recently applied his magic touch to Ubuntu’s fifteenth anniversary gala fundraiser at Gotham Hall in New York City. For the event, he tapped his childhood history to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a starry African night with African-style shebeen structures amid tables topped with authentic blue and purple sheshwe linens, a menu of South African delicacies and entertainment by fabulous musicians, including jazz legend Hugh Masekela. So what’s the ultimate secret to Cowie’s success? “My parents were gracious hosts, and I learned from them,” he says. “Making people feel welcome and happy was something that was instilled in me from a very early age.” Aside from that, it’s pretty simple, says Cowie: “We do believe in magic and that dreams do come true.” ◗

The Dining Room, Park Hyatt Sydney Sydney, Australia

It has always had the view: a waterfront, direct vista of the Sydney Opera House. Over the years, though, the chef and menu at The Dining Room at Park Hyatt Sydney have gone through various transformations, hitting a peak after French-born Franck Detrait took over the kitchen in late 2013. The result is a mix of modern Australian with Above: Seared Bluefin tuna, beetroot and raspberry condiment, dashi and sumac. Asian tones and a serious French overlay, the culmination of Detrait’s Burgundy and Provençal origins and time spent in some of Paris’ top kitchens. The extraordinarily vivid ingredients available in Australia are paramount, and Detrait skillfully combines them in dishes such as seared Bluefin tuna with beetroot and raspberry condiment, dashi and sumac as well as Murraylands lamb loin with spring onion, baby pak choi, pistachio and tarragon sabayon. He follows it all up with creative desserts such as chocolate Gran Cru with hazelnut and quinoa, served with raspberry sorbet. To complement such complexity on the plate, The Dining Room—recently named “Metropolitan Restaurant of the Year” at the New South Wales TAA Awards—keeps things simple in terms of design. The room is airy, refined and neutral, with cream-colored, contemporary furniture and slim, hanging accent lights. The main decoration is the wall of windows showing off the city’s most famous sight. 7 Hickson Road, +61 2 9256 1234, diningroom.com.au

Vera

Cartagena de Indias, Colombia You might not expect to find an authentic Italian restaurant within the walls of a Colonial mansion in the historic center of Cartagena, but Vera is exactly that—delivering expertly prepared, coastal Italian cuisine as the main restaurant of the boutique Hotel Tcherassi. Chef Daniel Castaño is Bogota-born and raised, but his culinary background is in the New York kitchens of restaurants Babbo, Lupa and Otto under the tutelage of famed Italian chef Mario Batali. As a result, Castaño’s pastas—like fettuccine aragosta, prepared with lobster, garlic and tomatoes, as well as risotto with Portobello mushrooms, fontina cheese and thyme—would pass muster with even the most discerning visiting Italian. Main courses are also on point, whether strictly traditional, such as snapper with artichokes, or veering slightly into more unusual terrain like steak with Gorgonzola, onions, macadamias and cherries. Adding to the appeal is the setting: sleek and contemporary, in contrast to the 250-year-old stone walls encasing the room. And out-

United States to draw inspiration from places in Europe or Asia, but rare for the imitation to go in reverse. But that’s what has happened here. Mott 32—located in Hong Kong’s Central District and honored as “Best New Restaurant 2015” by Hong Kong Tatler—takes its name from the address of New York City’s first Chinese convenience store, which opened in Chinatown in 1851. It draws part of its design inspiration from the industrial buildings in New York as well, fused with Hong Kong’s colorful, imperial look. The result is high style that’s subtle, intricate and atmospherically lit in a low, romantic light.

The menu is primarily Cantonese with touches of Beijing and Sichuan, driven heavily by farmto-table ingredients. The dishes are traditional but with modern spins like black truffles in the kurobuta pork and quail egg siu mai, as well as barbecue Iberico pork with yellow mountain honey. Regulars know to order the Peking duck in advance; the apple wood–roasted duck is prepared over 48 hours in a custom-designed oven and drying fridge to create succulent meat and perfectly crisp skin. In the crush of openings in this energetic, big-city restaurant scene—one that is sometimes more obsessed with the celebrities in attendance than the creations on the plate—Spring is a refreshing change. The bright, airy, serene restaurant located in a wing of the grand nineteenthcentury Somerset House feels like a garden, with ceramic blossoms by Brazilian artist Valeria Nascimento on one wall and a winter garden atrium as the centerpiece. This environment should feel familiar to chef Skye Gyngell, who won a Michelin star at The Café of garden center Petersham Nurseries and then temporarily withdrew from sight (and the pressure of that star) in 2012. Spring’s opening is a double emergence: a room opening to the public after 150 years of use as office space and a chef returning to the restaurant world with a place that’s wholly her own. Gyngell’s approach is seasonal to the extreme. “I shop at Marylebone Farmers Market, Maltby Street and Spa Terminus and gain cooking inspiration just walking through the market stalls,” she says. That translates into daily changing menus featuring dishes such as roasted squab with slow-cooked chard, warm Chianti and anchovy dressing; scallops with polenta, agretti and salsa rossa; and a salad of fennel, blood oranges, hazelnuts and pink radicchio. Gyngell wanted an intimate place where she could control all the elements and make her own ice cream. And here she has it. In the casual Salon area of the restaurant, you can sample her skill in blending unique flavors like Marsala and fig. Already home to many private art collections, the Miami Design District will soon house its first museum when the Institute of Contemporary Art (pictured below) debuts in its new permanent location during Art Basel 2016. The joint effort between Norman and Irma Braman and Craig Robins will boast nearly 55,000 square feet of exhibition space—including a 15,000-square-foot sculpture garden.

Nile Nosh From the moment Los Angeles import Cleo premiered at South Beach’s The Redbury, it has been consistently packed. Dine on an eclectic Mediterranean menu, under the watchful eye of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra herself (in the form of a large, lit photograph). The warm, fresh-baked bread is worth every calorie to scoop colorfully garnished dips like carrot harissa. Vegetarians, often overlooked in Miami, are given respect through dolmades, flatbreads such as artichoke and wilted arugula, and a salad of grilled halloumi atop kale with pieces of citrus and toasted hazelnuts in a tangy dressing. Meat eaters can choose from staples like moussakah and lamb tagine, while seafood lovers enjoy fresh oysters, ceviche, Moroccan fish tagine and more. Be ready to shout “Opa!”—Cleo has quickly become the local go-to for plate-smashing birthday blowouts. 1776 Collins Avenue, 305.534.2536, sbe.com/cleosouthbeach

Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta—the team that started the renowned Bar Lab, which creates avantgarde cocktail programs around the world—are the brains behind the progressive Indian Creek compound’s first full-service bar and restaurant. A blackboard at the restaurant’s entrance alerts diners to what’s in store for the day, listing local ingredients like oyster mushrooms from Paradise Farms and Zak the Baker bread. The city’s melting-pot culture comes through in beautifully presented, authentic dishes as varied as shakshouka, and a ropa vieja and arepa platter, served on mismatched plates for a vintage, Old Florida vibe. For Eduardo Costantini, the 68-yearold founder of Consultatio Real Estate and MALBA contemporary art museum in Argentina, everything in life and business begins with art. For a start, the luxurious sales gallery of his new project— Miami’s Oceana Bal Harbour—is adorned with art pieces personally selected by Costantini, including works by Lucio Fontana, Wifredo Lam and Pablo Fonseca. On a busy afternoon, sales associates work amid the balm of some very accomplished art, as Costantini takes the long view. “To me, art is a constant, in my blood,”

32

says Costantini. “I’ve been collecting for 40 years. Art energizes our buildings. It’s not just a marketing tool, and we’re not in this for the short run. We have a curatorial team, like a museum, and art is integrated into the design of our projects.” When the famed Argentine developer got involved with his first U.S. effort—the 142-unit Oceana Key Biscayne—he was quick to infuse the building with art. “We included two specially commissioned murals by the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes,” says Costantini, who also lent one of his pieces to Milhazes’ exhibition at the Perez Art Museum Miami, her

Developer Eduardo Costantini knows it’s not money but art that makes the world go ’round. And he’s bringing his philosophy to Miami’s newest luxury residence.

first solo museum show in the United States. “To me, the real enjoyment is the conception of the project, considering the interaction of the art and the design. Good architecture and art changes people, lifts them up, and that’s an effect you want to create as a developer.” The larger, 240-unit Oceana Bal Harbour has an even more ambitious art program. “Oceana Bal Harbour will have more than 10 pieces of museum-quality work in the public areas, along with two Jeff Koons sculptures,” Costantini says, pointing out that all of the art will be “owned by the residents of Oceana Bal Harbour.

34

“Koons is a truly international artist and appeals to Oceana residence owners, who are often art collectors in their own right,” he says. Costantini himself is a lifelong collector. In 2001, he took his love of art to a new level by donating his entire collection— some 200 pieces—and founding MALBA, a contemporary art museum in Argentina that now houses more than 500 works. Costantini—who presides over a $3 billion real estate portfolio—comes from humble beginnings. He grew up with 13 brothers and sisters in a town outside Buenos Aires. By 28, he managed to save enough money to pursue a master’s degree in quantitative economics at the University of East Anglia, England, which he received in 1975. After returning to Argentina, he went into banking for a while before entering the real estate business. Since then, he has spearheaded some of his country’s largest projects— including the development of the Nordelta “city within a city” in Buenos Aires, a planned community with some 30,000 residents and various neighborhoods, schools, a medical center, shopping malls, cinemas, banks, restaurants, sports clubs and five-star hotels— as well as multiple projects in Uruguay. At the moment, he’s developing another planned community in Argentina, Puertos del Lago. For Oceana Bal Harbour, Costantini worked with some of the world’s top designers. “Our residence owners are citizens of the world, and we’ve assembled an international team for Oceana Bal Harbour,” he

says. “Piero Lissoni is our interior designer, and Enzo Enea is creating the landscape design. Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica has done the building itself. Miami has become a global city, and the Oceana team is perfect for a project with global ambitions.” Aside from serving as an ideal showcase for contemporary art, Oceana Bal Harbour, which is set back from Collins Avenue, is a thoughtful structure in all respects: The garage is underground, which beautifies and cools the property, and the entire project is LEED certified. The 28-story building is parallel to the ocean and Biscayne Bay, situated on a 5.5-acre site with 400 feet of beachfront. The central breezeway of the building, which connects the ocean and the bay, is 50 feet wide and 60 feet tall. Apart from opening up the property and creating a sustainable outdoor meeting space, the breezeway serves as a choice setting for a Koons sculpture,

032-COSTANTINI-ONELIFE-0315-new.indd 35

which will be visible from Collins Avenue. Pluto and Proserpina—one of two Koons pieces for which Costantini put up $14 million—will be displayed in the breezeway’s reflecting pool. Before it lands in its permanent home, the larger-than-life sculpture is traveling the globe as part of “Jeff Koons: A Retrospective.” A centerpiece of the retrospective, Pluto and Proserpina began its journey at the Whitney in New York. The sculpture is on view at Paris’ Centre Pompidou through April 27 before moving on to the Guggenheim in Bilbao in June. In 2016, coinciding with the opening of Oceana Bal Harbour, Pluto and Proserpina will be unveiled at the condomimium, along with another Koons sculpture, Ballerina. (Ballerina will be on display at Costantini’s MALBA in May.) For Costantini, giving residents joint ownership of the art collection at Oceana Bal

Harbour is a continuation of his belief in the unifying power of contemporary art. “Within Miami, a city that is becoming an art center, we are located within a neighborhood, Bal Harbour, where art is especially important,” he says. “The art collection at Oceana will also establish a sense of community, which is an important aspect of all my projects.” When architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia became involved with the project, he knew art would be a primary element from the getgo. “Eduardo was looking to create a sister project to Oceana Key Biscayne with major exterior art pieces,” Fort-Brescia says. So Fort-Brescia carefully designed a space that would let the work shine. “From the beginning, we were keen to create a minimalist design solution, going back to the principles of ‘less is more,’” he says. “There’s a conceptual clarity in the creation of simple volumes, and this creates an ideal setting for the exterior artwork. Inside Oceana The inspiration behind the design

Few, if any, sites in Miami offer the luxury of space, light, air, greenery and beachfront, and architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia took full advantage of Oceana’s circumstances. “The most unique aspect of Oceana is the amount of open space, a park surrounding the building,” he says. “Waterfront sites for residential towers in Miami are often perpendicular to the ocean, but Oceana is parallel to the beach, with units having direct views of the ocean. In many cases, units have dual views of the ocean and the yacht basin on Biscayne Bay.” Those ocean views—along with the location’s warm weather and abundance of light—had a big influence on Fort-Brescia’s design. “Our first focus was on broad terraces that could accommodate an array of furniture—outdoor living is the ultimate luxury,” he says. “We then sought to connect the interior spaces with the exterior decks, using large glass panels that could slide open. It’s important to bring in as much natural light as possible into the spaces, [but] in line with sustainable thinking about construction, we protected the glass surfaces from direct sunlight; the balcony overhangs are continuous.” In line with Oceana Bal Harbour being a LEED-certified project, Enzo Enea’s landscape design creates comfortable microclimates with native plant materials and plants that require less maintenance and water usage, allowing for a more sustainable approach to landscape design. “The plants we’re using,” Enea explains, “include sea grape, wild tamarind and fakahatchee grass. These plants will not only thrive in this extreme beach environment but will also be used for a series of comfortable outdoor rooms, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.”

a private oceanfront unit with viewing deck at oceana bal harbour; (below) the pool at oceana bal harbour

“The two gently curving towers are connected by a glass bridge,” he continues, “creating a breezeway of monumental proportions. This grand-scale gateway dramatizes the connection between the land and the ocean. The tall and broad arch sits in perfect alignment with an inland linear park, connecting the entrance of Oceana with the Bal Harbour yacht basin. The combined elements of the arch and the park result in an urban design statement of seldom-seen dimensions. And, of course, the gateway is a perfect setting for Jeff Koons.” To showcase the art and architecture, Costantini and Fort-Brescia relied on Enea 36

Landscape Architecture. The Switzerlandbased firm—who is also working on Miami buildings designed by OMA, Zaha Hadid and Enrique Norten—was the perfect choice for Oceana, says Fort-Brescia: “Enzo [Enea] understood the idea of geometric purity and translated it into the landscape. The minimalist approach appears in the pure stretch of lawns and the planning of green areas, spaces that welcome the art at Oceana.” Enea certainly understands Costantini’s vision. “Oceana was designed to celebrate art, and everything—all the colors and textures in the garden—must be curated, a kind of stage for the Koons sculptures,” says the designer.

032-COSTANTINI-ONELIFE-0315-new.indd 37

To Costantini, the importance of art at Oceana is a reflection of Miami’s place in the world, both in the realm of contemporary art and in terms of international cachet. “I read recently that by 2023, Miami will be the number three city in the western world in terms of having a concentrated population of individuals with high net worth,” he says. “We’ll be right behind New York and London. “I’ve been coming to Miami for 25 years,” he adds, “and bought an apartment here in 2008. It was such a different city 25 years ago. I could not have imagined then what this city would become. But I always trusted Miami—the city of the future.” ◗

Stellar

Cellars When it comes to collecting, oenophiles know not every fine wine is worth a spot in their cellar. Here’s a look at some of the blue-chip bottles that are always in demand. By Mark Spivak

38

“Cream always rises to the top,” noted wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr. once observed. He was referring to Bordeaux’s Château Latour, but the adage could be applied to most of the world’s blue-chip wines: the Bordeaux First Growths (Latour, Lafite, Mouton, Margaux and Haut-Brion), Château Pétrus, a handful of white and red Burgundies led by the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a few Italian reds and a cluster of cult Cabernets from California. Over the past few decades, prices for these wines have outperformed almost every stock market on the planet. Consider Château Mouton-Rothschild from the legendary 1982 vintage. When the wine was first released, it sold in the neighborhood of $400 per case. By March 1994, according to Decanter magazine’s Fine Wine Tracker, it had risen to $1,375; in November 2005, it was $6,670. The same case is now worth around $12,000. The explanation for these skyrocketing prices can be found in the timeless law of supply and demand. Production at the First Growth estates rarely exceeds 20,000 cases annually; each time a locus of new wealth develops around the world, those fledgling millionaires and billionaires seek the same wines as badges of honor. In the case of Château Pétrus, where output seldom exceeds 4,000 cases, competition and prices are higher still. By the time you get to Romanée-Conti, the flagship wine from the Burgundy estate of the same name, only 450 cases are available in an average vintage.

The Hottest

Wines at Auction Not all wine ages well, and only a small fraction tends to have collectible value. Here, a quick guide to some wines that have consistently appreciated over time.

Little wonder, then, that a superlot of Romanée-Conti recently sold for more than $1.6 million at an auction conducted by Sotheby’s wine division. The lot consisted of six bottles from each vintage from 1992 through 2010, 114 in total. The result wasn’t surprising, considering that a single case of the 1990 had sold for slightly more than $120,000 at auction three years earlier. Both of the Sotheby’s auctions took place in Hong Kong, the current epicenter of demand for fine wine. Asian collectors have been bidding up the price of Bordeaux and Burgundy for nearly a decade, with Château Lafite-Rothschild emerging as the region’s ultimate prize. Prices have now cooled, but at their peak a case of Lafite from a noteworthy vintage sold for two or three times as much in Hong Kong as in London or New York. On the surface, then, it would seem that blue-chip wine is the ultimate collectible—but, like any other investment, it has its pitfalls. Someone buying fine wine as an investment needs to have pristine storage conditions (constant levels of temperature and humidity, with backup generators to guarantee the environment). They must be prepared to hold the wine for years and sometimes decades. They must display sound judgment in choosing vintages; a case of 2000 Château Pétrus, for example, is currently worth nearly $36,000, while a case of the 2004 would sell for one-third as much. Above all, they have to realize that constantly accelerating prices are not guaranteed: Ultimately, wine is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Choose wisely the next time you bid on a bottle at auction. But even if your wine doesn’t appreciate significantly in price, the good news is: You still have the consolation of drinking it. ◗ 40

Literary Leanings Tucked away in a landmark South Beach boutique hotel, the Writer’s Room at The Betsy connects artists to the local community. By Daphne Nikolopoulos

The raison d’être of The Betsy can be summed up by three words emblazoned on a small, turquoise button: Creativity takes courage. Although it isn’t an original sentiment (Henri Matisse said it a century ago), it does demonstrate the South Beach hotel’s commitment to nurturing and advancing the creative space in Miami. The aforementioned button, which is distributed to hotel guests as a tribal badge of sorts, is a calling card for The Betsy’s PACE program, which centers on philanthropy, arts, culture and education, with a special focus on the literary arts. For owner Jonathan Plutzik, cultural programming is not a gimmick or a way to stand out among the sleek hotels lining Ocean Drive. It is a passion ingrained long ago and a way to honor his own past. “I come from a family of writers and artists,” he says. “We have a natural inclination to be supportive of the literary community.” 54

Among those talented relatives is his father, Hyam Plutzik, a highly regarded poet and threetime Pulitzer Prize finalist who died in 1962 at age 51. “I’ve had the opportunity to connect with him through his writing,” says Plutzik, who was 7 when he lost his father. “I attach great power to the written word. It has a sense of immortality and longevity; it leaves a mark on the world.” In his father’s honor—and as a tribute to others who shape words into art—Plutzik and his sister, Deborah Plutzik Briggs, established the Writer’s Room at The Betsy (betsywritersroom.com). The studio space serves as a creative retreat for writers and poets, both established and emerging, to stay and work, at no cost, for up to a week at a time. Writers have to apply to the program and, if accepted, agree to host a literary salon—a concept all but lost in modern times—during which they can read their work or discuss their

ideas among members of the community. “For us,” says Plutzik, “that engagement creates a multiplier effect around their presence.” More than 250 writers, ranging from household names like Amy Tan to promising writers who have not yet been published, have been in residence in the Writer’s Room since its inception in 2012. Their accommodation: a small but well-appointed space with a foldout sofa, cork walls (for pinning ideas and inspiration), rows of books and Hyam Plutzik’s original writing desk. As the only program of its kind in Miami, the Writer’s Room has received international attention and support, most notably from the Knight Foundation. A longstanding advocate of the arts, the Miami-based foundation provided a Knight Arts Challenge grant of $60,000 as start-up funding for the project. The Betsy’s latest nod comes from the

Academy of American Poets, which partnered with the hotel to fund a residency program for winners of AAP’s James Laughlin Award, given once a year. The community will be invited to meet the award-winning poets during intimate gatherings at The Betsy, the most intriguing of which are hosted in the underground B Bar, whose mirrored ceilings, moody lighting and art-filled light boxes give it a vibe that’s part funhouse, part twenties speakeasy. Now in its fourth season, the Writer’s Room is booking residencies for 2016 and beyond. The demand, Plutzik says, has skyrocketed. In response, The Betsy will unveil a second Writer’s Room as part of its expansion, which will be complete in late 2016. In the meantime, Miamians will continue to experience the talent of writers and poets of diverse backgrounds. “We celebrate diversity in every possible way it can be measured,” says Plutzik. “Ethnicity, gender, language, sexual orientation, race…We want to connect with communities of all kinds.” One recent artist-in-residence perfomance that stands out for Plutzik was a public event featuring writer David Mills, during which Mills recited the work of African-American poet Langston Hughes, in honor of Black History Month. To say Mills brought down the house is an understatement. On reflection, Plutzik says, “it was tremendously powerful. I am—and everyone present is—so lucky to have this opportunity to regularly connect with poets and writers on such an intimate level. I am proud of the way the hotel has devoted energy and space to this exercise.” ◗

Paradise FOUND in south florida , residents can have the best of both worlds. here, a look at the new tropical metropolis—metropica. By Jean Nayar

There’s no great secret to the lure of Miami. It’s a coveted metropolis like New York, London or Dubai—with the raw, natural beauty of a tropical island. A city where art, food, fashion and business overflow from the city streets to the shores of the Atlantic. It’s that duality that inspires some of the world’s best designers to create in Miami; Zaha Hadid, Piero Lissoni, Sir Norman Foster and Richard Meier are just some of the masters who have lent their talents to the city’s skyline. Joining their ranks is Chad Oppenheim, a local architect with world-class stature who is bringing his high-minded point 56

of view to a new development called Metropica, in nearby Sunrise. “The idea of combining nature with urbanism fascinates us,” says Oppenheim. “When there’s a certain density and vibrancy to the urban experience, you really feel and appreciate the nature around you even more.” Given Oppenheim’s predisposition—and his history of designing some of the most vibrant planned communities in the world (think Isla Moda in Dubai and La Verbena in Costa Rica)—it’s no surprise that he is one of the talents behind the $1 billion multifaceted development. His

master plan? To exploit the duality of the area, blending the exhilarating aspects of city life with intonations of the tropical landscape all around. “Our idea is to create a fusion of urbanism and ecology by maximizing green and open spaces and connecting them with the broader neighboring ecosystem, namely the Everglades,” he says. “The concept is to create buildings within a tropical paradise, not unlike the buildings in New York City that surround Central Park.” Set on 65 acres just 45 miles from downtown Miami, Metropica (livemetropica.com) will include three condominium towers, office

space, restaurants, recreational amenities and luxury retail, with easy access to cultural hubs like the Sawgrass Mills Mall and the BB&T Center Arena, as well as the natural wonder of the Everglades. Oppenheim and his team aim to emphasize the connection with nature as a lifestyle, creating structures that stand as peaceful extensions of the natural environment, rather than fighting with it. For example, deep terraces and trellis systems are part of the infrastructure of the residential towers, encouraging residents to cultivate their own personal gardens. The grounds will also be planted with ONELIFE

an array of edible plants and fruit trees, such as mango and avocado, so that non-green-thumb residents will be able to “just reach up and grab the fruit from a tree,” says Oppenheim. Known for their socially and environmentally conscious architecture, the team was also careful to integrate sustainable features into the design. Metropica’s buildings are ultra-energy-efficient and include a gray-water recycling system as well as a rainwatercollection tank for irrigation. Metropica is the brainchild of KGH International Development LLC, a real estate development and investment company that creates self-contained communities in the United States and Latin America—including YOO Nordelta in Buenos Aires. KGH wanted to create a similar self-sustaining, quasi-urban community in Southeast Florida. “Our goal is to create a dream community, a place where people can live and work and play in a peaceful urban oasis,” says Joseph Kavana, chairman of KGH. To complement Oppenheim’s architecture, The Trillist Companies—the developer of the project’s residential tower—enlisted longtime partner YOO Studio, the London-based group that collaborates with Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders, Kelly Hoppen and other celebrated designers, to design residential interior spaces at Metropica. YOO will start by creating the interior design for the 1,250 high-rise condominiums and common spaces in the YOO

Metropica tower, the first phase of a residential project that will eventually include 2,500 condos and 300 townhomes. Inspired by the geometry of architecture, the YOO designers infused common spaces with texture, color and detail by mixing and layering grids, stripes, diamonds and interlocking patterns to rich effect. A calm, pale gray, silver and white palette define different public spaces, while accents with YOO’s trademark pops of fresh color give each a sense of individuality. Richly veined ceramics arranged in a precise grid, for example, clad the double-height lobby and reference the grandeur of a bygone era with a contemporary twist. This feeling of nostalgic glamour is further expressed in the lobby with the use of highly figured stone and richly colored curtains and reiterated again with diamond-cut mirror paneling on the elevator doors and the reception desk. Offset with contemporary oversized furniture in white and silver, not only is the overall effect luxurious and bold but there is a soothing effect as well. “We worked closely with the strong forms of Oppenheim’s architecture to explore the geometric patterns and create interiors that are at once iconic, elegant and relaxed,” says Mark Davison, head of design for YOO and the lead designer on the project. As its name suggests, Metropica will ultimately merge the best of metropolitan life with the paradisal qualities of the tropics. A true “urban jungle” indeed. ◗

Haute Havens From Miami to Milan, these destination boutiques are playgrounds for couture enthusiasts. By Michele Meyer

What makes certain shopping meccas in some of the world’s greatest cities destinations in themselves? They’re where quirk meets class and entertainment meets merchandise—much more than just hip-and-honed fashion, art books and home wares but epicenters of attitude and lifestyle. The best-curated culture and couture shopping treasures in the world merit cult status and obsessive disciples. Here are six definitely worth the trip.

2

10 Corso Como, Milan Origami lanterns cascade above cubist frocks, surreal sofas and geometric rugs whose shapes, shades and textures form a confectionary of eye candy at Milan’s 10 Corso Como. “This seems normal today,” says creator Carla Sozzani, former editor-in-chief of Italian Elle who has also worked at Italian Vogue. “But it wasn’t 25 years ago when I envisioned my living magazine, where you turn corners instead of pages.” Sozzani chose an unlikely location for her endeavor—a windowless warehouse and garage far from the mode mating call of Milan’s cultural center. But she was determined to succeed, clinging to her collage of cool culled from favorite haunts in Tokyo, Marrakech, Paris and Seoul. “I wanted 10 Corso Como to be a destination where culture and commerce join,” she says. Today, ultra-stylish dominoes, umbrellas and suitcases collide with art exhibits and books by Helmut Newton and Alexander Rodchenko; futuristic fashions by Comme des Garçons and Maison Martin Margiela; and contemporary home design by Arne Jacobsen and Fornasetti. The emporium has become a pilgrimage for visiting editors and retailers. Says Sozzani: “It’s not about acquiring objects but living an experience of peace and beauty.” Corso Como, 10, Milano, +39 02 2900 2674, 10corsocomo.com 60

Choix, São Paulo On his way to work five years ago in the high-end Jardins district of São Paulo, Márcio Riba—creative director of Neogama/BBH, one of Brazil’s biggest ad agencies—fell in love with a vacant space. “I freaked out and rented it without a plan,” he says of the light-bathed 3,200-squarefoot ground floor in a 14-story, Brutalist-style office tower erected in 1974 by Brazil’s Pedro Paulo de Melo Saraiva. “I didn’t know if I wanted a restaurant, a fashion brand, a design studio or a music label,” says Riba. “Then I thought, Why not have all the things I love in one space? So I built a brand from a building.” Naming the store Choix (French for choice) is apropos given its array of fashion, accessories, home decor, artwork, books and music. “Choix’s choices are its strength,” Ribas says. “Our brands are loaded with style and personality, with small production for exclusivity and a quality level—from raw materials to finish—that’s rare today.” From the Amapô fringed fanny packs, Robinson les Bains beachwear, Uslu Airlines nail polish and Lomo cameras to the Brunno Jahara lighting, Mauricio Arruda furniture and Bruno Cals photography, everything shares Riba’s distinct sleek, chic and bohemian “gypsetter” point of view. But his biggest feat may be robbing nearby mega-malls of their hippest customers. “Consumers who look to us prefer not to buy in the pasteurized world of a mall,” he says. You haven’t truly experienced Sampa—as the natives call this bustling metropolis—until you’ve checked Choix off your shopping list. 181 rua Professor Arthur Ramos, Jardim Paulistano, São Paulo, +55 11 3078 9475, lojachoix.com.br

Imagine a couture cocktail of Paris’ subtle elegance and South Beach Miami’s overt sexiness. Thanks to inclement climes in the former city, cofounder Laure Heriard Dubreuil moved to the latter, where in 2009 she opened The Webster, a spacious temple to great taste. “A very rainy winter day in Paris convinced us to move to a sunny place,” the Rémy-Martin heiress says of herself and fellow merchandising whiz and founding partner Frederic Dechnik (Milan Vukmirovic is also a founder). “Miami turned out to be the perfect fit.” Not only is the multicultural metropolis having a Renaissance moment, thanks in part to Art Basel Miami, but also, “taste has no frontier,” says Heriard Dubreuil. The former marketing exec incorporated Miami’s spiciness, her own wit and the Parisian chic she craved. Cuttingedge En Noir, The Elder Statesman and Hood by Air hold their own against classics Chanel and Dior, and flamingofestooned fashion, jewelry and accessories by Suno, Piamita and Charlotte Olympia. Adding to the balance of cultures within 20,000 square feet and three stories of a 1939 former hotel are shimmering brass rails and round mirrors lending the aura of a yacht. Spot-lit mannequins line up as if to stomp the runway, or perhaps gawk at the famous style globetrotters who surf the Webster—like Tilda Swinton, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West. Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, Paris Le Bon Marché was one of the world’s first department stores when Aristide Boucicaut opened it in 1852, and it remains one of the very best. The former dry-goods store—whose name translates to “the good deal” and which was acquired by LVMH Group in 1984—feels intimate even at 345,000 square feet. And unlike Paris’ other grands magasins on the Right Bank, Le Bon Marché isn’t clogged with tourists. The store on the city’s less-uptight Left Bank lures moneyed, well-dressed natives with its well-edited ultra-luxe and cutting-edge clothing, jewelry, accessories, home decor, kitchenware, bed linens and exhibits, including one by famed artist Ai Weiwei this summer. Exclusives include Thom Browne womenswear, Haider Ackermann menswear, 3x1 jeans, Francesco Russo shoes and a huge (and oft-imitated) La Grande Epicerie food hall and deli, where time-pressed Parisians grab meals, snacks and wine. “Our customers are very tapped into trends and come to us to find out what will be hot in Paris,” says Anne-Catherine Grimal, director of communications at Le Bon Marché. The airy building itself is a monument to good taste, designed by architect LouisAuguste Boileau and later updated by his son, Louis Charles Boileau, and Gustave Eiffel. “Everything that is the essence of Paris is nearby: a park, very good schools, the city’s best restaurants, designer boutiques and art galleries,” Grimal says. At Ruzizi Tented Lodge in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, there is a tree that sits in front of the wooden terrace on the shores of Lake Ihema. A thousand weaver nests hang from its branches. In the day’s last light, the nests turn golden. They look like Christmas baubles, the birds hovering and darting in streaks of yellow as they nurture their homes and feed their young. It is bewitching, this business of nature, all the more so in a part of the world almost lost completely to the fallout from Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. Along the Kagera River, which zigzags nearby along Rwanda’s border with Tanzania, refugees and soldiers lay in hidthe park ceased to exist as a safe and functioning wilderness for anything to thrive. Post-genocide, Akagera was halved in size, reduced from 2,700 square kilometers, to 1,120 square kilometers to make room for returning refugees. Yet there was still plenty worth saving. Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park, with rolling hills of acacia bush, scattered grasslands and riverine forests. Akagera is also home to Central Africa’s largest protected wetland, which accounts for the extraordinarily rich birdlife. In 2009, this potential was recognized by African Parks, a South Africa–based nonprofit currently managing some 5.9 million hectares in seven African countries on behalf of national governments, from Zambia to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Each territory AP is involved with has different issues; all are under threat—critical eco-systems under pressure from conflict or the pan-African poaching scourge.

In these elegant environs, it’s hard to imagine the horror that has come before, as we settle in to sundown beside silver rivers of water, where flocks of whistling ducks come to drink. We watch Kordofan giraffe wander among the acacia. We listen to the cry of hyena at night. We go on safari with elephants in herds 400 animals strong. I think of the American photographer Ansel Adams and his description of what this all means: how wilderness, or wildness, is a mystique, a religion, an intense philosophy, a dream of ideal society, phenomena of an advanced society and a unique contribution to the democratic idea. ◗ For more information on African Parks and its other projects in Zambia, Central African Republic, Malawi and the Congo, visit africanparks.org. What’s Next The Miami River Heats Up

Clockwise from top: Seaspice; the Miami Mega Yacht Club marina will include 14 berths; the Riverwalk pedestrian passage at One Brickell

Last year, when a judge ordered Miami River hotspot Seasalt & Pepper to drop the first half of its name, citing a similarity to an existing restaurant in Naples, one thing became clear: The new establishment was a huge success. After all, a less popular, lower-profile restaurant would never have been sued over its name. The owners renamed the spot Seaspice and got on with the show. The hubbub surrounding Seaspice is emblematic of what’s happening all along the Miami River, where a wave of waterfront dining options join residential and commercial megaprojects, as well as massive amounts of new construction happening in nearby areas like Downtown, Brickell and Little Havana, all within walking distance. At the southeastern end of the river, the Related Group’s One Brickell—a three-tower mixed-use project with 1,400 high-end residential units, a hotel, ground-floor restaurants and retail—is taking over the Brickell Avenue Capital Grille property. “One Brickell will open up pedestrian connections to the river, connecting it along the riverwalk to the Edge [another residential tower in the planning stages], neighboring Icon Brickell, and inland toward Brickell City Centre,” says Carlos Rosso, president of the Related Group’s condominium division. A few blocks west, the Chetrit Group is behind a megaproject immediately east of Jose Marti Park with the working title Miami Riverwalk, with four towers of mixed uses—everything from residential, to commercial, to a 300-room hotel, to a marina and, of course, a riverwalk. Farther up the river, River Landing is a pair of mixed-use towers

adjacent to the Jackson Memorial/UM hospital complex that, when completed in 2018, will include big-box stores, residential units and generous outdoor parkland. And in the Central Business District, KAR Properties has proposed the development of twin, slender, 60-story luxury condo towers connected by a sky bridge. It’s all part of the city’s plan to create a vibrant and active riverfront, with pedestrian life being central to the river’s future. Miami River Commission member Javier Betancourt explains that the group has been negotiating with these developers to execute privately built sections of riverwalk behind their properties and to develop public segments of riverwalk— under bridges, along streets—that are necessary to link everything. In the end, Betancourt says the Miami River will be a better, more active version of what it has always been: a working and living waterfront, with fishing boats and marinas coexisting among strolling couples, casual shoppers and cruising yachts. The river is, in fact, one of the few areas in Dade County that can handle mega-yachts, with several often docked on the open stretch next to the Epic Hotel and a neighboring 1.25-acre plot of land that developer Ugo Colombo recently sold to the Argentine Coto family. And more big boats are coming. Rosso says Related will likely have dockage for “a few” at One Brickell, as well as places for restaurant patrons to tie up. Also in the works just a few blocks away from River Landing is the Miami Mega Yacht Club—including 14 covered mega-yacht berths for boats as large as 200 feet, crew housing, and maintenance and recreational facilities. ◗
