The only other things that make him happier are his home life and dogs. He always says “that working hard is easier when you surround yourself with good people”. The Okanagan:

A Year Round Sanctuary There are a number of things that pop into my head when I close my eyes and think of the Okanagan. Five things to be exact, a lake, a beach chair, a golf club, a boat and wine. That’s it, that’s all. A short list that provides the greatest cross section of this beautiful area that we are lucky enough to call home. Don’t get me wrong, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of other combinations, these are just the ones that apply to me. I could just as easily have said ski boots, aviation technologies, university, orchards and beautiful homes. How about spas, art culture, dining, landscape and lifestyle? The five that I chose directly reflect my personality and my wants and needs. Probably depending on how you feel on any given day, what time of the year it is and how much sleep you had the night before, those five words would change regularly.

The beauty of the Okanagan, is that while those five things change everyday, everything that you need is here from one day to the next, to accommodate all your changing needs. Most people choose the Okanagan because of its warm, sunny, summer days that last well into the night. To be truthful, winters are pretty mild here too. You definitely do not have to go far to find as much winter as you can handle (if you want to!). Every region has a ski/snowboard resort that rivals some of the best. Starting in the North Okanagan (Vernon) you will find Silver Star, renowned for dry Okanagan powder, an incredible terrain park with

features for everyone and a great, colourful village. Big White is centrally located in the area, just 45 minutes north east of Kelowna. They too benefit from cold, dry snow, several family oriented activities aside from skiing and snowboarding and play host to many local, provincial, national and international events. As we creep further south we discover Apex Resort outside of Penticton and Mt. Baldy near Osoyoos. The runs in this part of the world might be shorter than Verbier, but you can still get that lactic acid burn in your legs nonetheless. Whether you like flying down groomed runs, slashing through the glades or boosting out of the half pipe, there is so much variety here you just can’t lose! There is no question that summertime rules in the Okanagan! If you are not at the beach, go to the beach. If you are not on a boat, get on a boat. If you are not on the golf course, book a tee time. Well, I am sure that you get the idea. Outdoor lifestyle is king in this part of the world. There are certainly people who want to be in the thick of it, and you can find them at Gyro Beach, Kelowna’s hottest waterfront park. But there are dozens of hidden waterfront treasures that I can’t tell you about (because my circle

of friends will kill me!) that are yours to be discovered. Because Kelowna has the greatest percentage of calm wind observations, it is home to Canada’s first Sesitec System 2.0 cable system for wakeboards. It is located on the West Kelowna side of the bridge. Of course beach culture is not for everyone. That means that you are more of an adventurer and explorer. For you, you will head into the hills and discover what the vineyards, orchards, bike trails and campsite have to offer. In case you haven’t heard, the Okanagan has garnered some worldwide status in the wine industry (in the spirits industry too). The cool nights and smokin’ hot days are perfect for grapes and many other fruits that are an agricultural mainstay in the region. Essentially the Okanagan Valley runs North/South. So for the adventurer heading East or West gets you into the more rural parts of the valley where you can find fishing lodges, pristine wilderness lakes and campsites. Aside from agriculture, adventure and lifestyle, the Okanagan also offers many varieties of sport. The weather dictates what you do and when, but when it is mostly sunny you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. That’s the Okanagan way. Soccer, tennis, golf, cycling, softball

and football, from organized leagues to weekend fun, there are enough fields, courts and courses for everyone visiting or living in the Okanagan. And, if it is too windy to participate in these sports, my suggestion would be to head down to Rotary Beach on Pandosy St. and watch the kite boarders at play. It is truly an experience to watch these multi coloured kites dance through the air in choreographed chaos! The further south you go, the hotter it gets, for real! There are four main bodies of water in the Okanagan. Kalamalka Lake runs South of Vernon but East of Okanagan Lake. What makes this lake so unique is the crystal clear azure blue waters. It not only looks tropical, there are several weeks a year, it is tropical. This beautiful body of water is a definite favourite among locals. Okanagan Lake runs from Vernon to Penticton, with Kelowna sitting smack dab in the middle at the lakes only crossing, the W.R. Bennett Bridge. Okanagan Lake in turn funnels into Skaha Lake. For an interesting afternoon river float, grab an inner tube and cruise down the channel with 3000 of your closest friends. Some people float on full on party rafts while others choose individual tubes with floating coolers to accompany them to “stay hydrated”! Skaha Lake is a little smaller and it comes to a halt at Okanagan Falls. And finally south of that is Canada’s hottest lake, Osoyoos Lake. Some people (myself included) have been known to make the trip to Osoyoos and visit one winery and jump in Osoyoos Lake. Then start to make your way north

and visit one vineyard and jump in Skaha Lake, then one more vineyard and Okanagan Lake and finally to the soothing waters of Kalamalka Lake. Your day will be rich with wine culture coupled perfectly with beach culture. Along these pristine mountain flanked lakes are quaint little communities that each have a charm of their own. In between Vernon, Kalamalka and Okanagan Lakes is an area called Lake Country. Very aptly named considering its surroundings. It is made up of four communities. The two business communities are Winfield and Oyama, both full service towns with fuel, food, hotels and marinas, while Carrs Landing and Okanagan Centre are the other two that make up Lake Country. They are located on the West side of the area, on Okanagan Lake, and are more rural with homes, cottages and waterfront parks. Lake Country has some beautiful spots and should not be missed. After crossing the bridge in Kelowna and starting to head south you come to Peachland and Summerland. Peachland is an adorable lakeside town that has beaches stretching the entire length of the town, the best Sunday walk in the area. With big developments in the hills above the town site, Peachland has some of the best views in the valley. Summerland has an old English charm to it as well as a fun waterfront with resorts, parks, beaches and restaurants. Winding further south you pass Penticton, and come to such gems as Okanagan Falls and Oliver. These are the moisture rich soils that are famous for

some amazing wine. This region is on the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert. The hills are scrub brush and ponderosa pines while thermometers are consistently in the mid 30’s for many months of the year. Oliver is proclaimed as The Wine Capital of Canada, so if exploring wine and wineries is your thing, then this is heaven! There are many wineries that are part of a rising trend known as Eco-Tourism. And, it’s not just grapes and bottles. It’s full service shops, accommodations, concerts, weddings and tasting rooms. The growing popularity of Okanagan wine has had a huge positive impact on the region. So, if you think that the Okanagan Valley is just wineries, beaches and ski hills, you are correct! But it also offers so much more, in so many other aspects. Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle. It can be as hurried as you want or as lazy as you want. That is one of the great characteristics of the Okanagan Valley, YOU get to set the tempo. It can be as “big city” as you want or as bucolic as you want. That is the real beauty of a midsized growing community. The oppourtunity is there to try something new but is also established enough to keep things traditional. The Okanagan Valley, truly an amazing place to live or visit, among lakes, wineries, golf courses and orchards. Outside, is where you want to be! So, put down your work, leave the boardroom and get to the Okanagan Valley. Where

a grand scale of crystalline lakes, pristine golf courses and vineyards for as far as the eye can see await you. And now it has never been easier to get here. At the Kelowna International Airport (YLW) the biggest news of the year comes with a smile! United Airlines Express now offers year-round daily service to Los Angeles, California (LAX). Finally these two similar regions will be united. For Okanagan residents, California currently accounts for the largest trans-border market because there are so many similarities between the two areas. The wine industry and the high-tech sector account for 28% of outbound travel to the USA. Mayor Walter Gray says “Having daily non-stop flights between Kelowna and Los Angeles will open the doors for both business and holiday travelers.” As one of the top 10 busiest airports in Canada, YLW’s total economic impact is 2,730 jobs and $610 million in total economic output to the province. When Jim got his first guitar at the age of ten, the first song he learned was Gordon Lightfoot’s “That’s What You Get For Loving Me”. Today, twentyfive years after the formation of Blue Rodeo, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor are widely respected as one of Canada’s best songwriting teams.

In 1998, Jim released All in Time which went on to sell Gold in Canada. His next album, 2006’s The Light That Guides You Home, was released to critical acclaim and won the Juno for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. On September 27, 2011 Jim released Skyscraper Soul, his 3rd solo album. His voice, always a voluptuous instrument, has never sounded better and Cuddy proves once again that his songwriting ranks with the best Canada has to offer.

It was one of the best shots I hit all year. The ball, cleanly struck with my trusty 7-iron (it’s not really all that trusty), never left the flag. It flew right over the stick, took one hop, and sucked back to three feet. “Dude, that was awesome! You should be on tour, man!” said J.D., my hilarious playing partner on this memorable round at Predator Ridge. Of course, considering I was on tour – albeit my own personal “tour” of the best courses in the Thompson Okanagan – I had a fitting response. “Dude, I’m already on tour. It’s called the Okanagan CPGA Tour. Except the CPGA stands for Can’t Play Golf Anymore.” After having a good chuckle, we hopped in the cart and drove to the green where I promptly missed the three-footer for birdie. “What did I tell you, man?” I said as we waved the cart gal over for another round. “I’ve got the hands of a sturgeon.”

But there was a silver lining. We were in the Thompson Okanagan – on the spectacular Ridge Course at Predator Ridge, no less - and the sun was shining and the beer was cold. Life was good. Jabby putting strokes and hosel fades were all part of the fun. And, no question, “fun” is what the golf scene in the Thompson Okanagan is all about. Boasting some fabulous new courses and incredible scenery, the sun-soaked Thompson Okanagan is one of the hottest golf destinations in North America. There are over 30 championship golf courses in the region, enough to play a different course each day for a month. While modern classics such as Tobiano, Tower Ranch, Sagebrush, and, of course, the Ridge Course at Predator Ridge, often take the starring roles these days, the lengthy list of long-standing favourites might be the region’s best attribute.

Ten years ago, before the golf boom of the mid 2000s, none of the aforementioned courses existed. The heavy hitters – which, by the way, are still top-tier courses in every sense of the word today – dominated the golfing landscape. Courses such as Gallagher’s Canyon, The Harvest Club, Fairview Mountain, Nk’Mip Canyon, Rivershore, The Dunes, and The Okanagan Golf Club were on the front pages everywhere. And, make no mistake, these courses still belong on your must-play list. Interestingly, in 2014 another new course will join the fray. A bold Greg Norman design, Ponderosa Golf Course in Peachland is poised to deliver on its promises. The layout, a complete redesign of the existing course, tops out at 7,100 yards and tumbles through towering pines high above Lake Okanagan. While the views are outstanding throughout, the most compelling aspect here is the quality of the golf holes. Meticulous shaping, beautiful bunkering, and a variety-filled collection of holes will, no doubt, yield a world-class golf experience.

Although this exciting new course was not on my “tour” (the course is scheduled to open in spring of 2014), I did get a chance to test my rusty swing at a number of other top Thompson Okanagan courses. On my eight-day journey I managed to “attack” seven different courses with my daring and deadly skill…or lack thereof. Batting leadoff was the unforgettable Tobiano on Kamloops Lake. As Canada’s Best New Course in 2008 by SCOREGolf Magazine, Tobiano has always set the bar high. And, from the moment you catch a glimpse of this postcard-pretty course on the drive in (the course is located twenty minutes east of Kamloops on the Trans Canada Highway/Highway 97), you know you’re in for a treat. Designed by talented architect Thomas McBroom, Tobiano doesn’t take a liking to big banana balls (my specialty) and

uncommitted putting strokes (the greens are particularly demanding here!). However, after a bogey-filled front nine I managed to find a bit of game on the incredible back nine. The run of holes from the 13th through the 16th – which includes a couple of lakeside gems that ride high atop the bluff – is my favourite at Tobiano. And, as luck would have it, I managed to play this stretch in one-under par, a minor miracle for sure. “Miraculous” is not a bad way to describe the very existence of the one-of-a-kind Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club. Located an hour south of Kamloops in the Nicola Valley near Merritt, Sagebrush is a private boutique club (non-members, via “invitation,” can play unlimited golf with lunch at “The Hideout” for $250) that serves up a quintessential Okanagan golf experience. The course, built on a vast, rugged, and rock-peppered mountainside, was designed by Albertan Rod Whitman and is considered one of the best layouts in the country. In 2012 SCOREGolf Magazine ranked Sagebrush 11th on their list of the Top 100 Courses in Canada. The day I played Sagebrush the temperature soared to 38 degrees Celsius, which is not uncommon in summer, and I basically had the place to myself. Sagebrush, which was modeled after the in-the-middle-of-nowhere private clubs like Sandhills in Nebraska and Sutton Bay in South Dakota, considers 40-60 golfers a very busy day. With wide fairways, perfect for my erratic behavior off the tee, I managed to keep the ball in play and had a decent score. My “Can’t Play Golf Anymore” status was seemingly revoked for this round! Somewhat surprisingly, I got off to a good start at Tower Ranch as well. Another Thomas McBroom design that tumbles through an amazing setting, Tower Ranch features what may be the best finishing stretch in the Thompson Okanagan.

The 17th hole, especially, which soars along the bench and affords amazing views of Kelowna and beyond, is awesome. Of course, by this time in the round I had spent all my good shots and proceeded to limp home with a terrible score, but a good attitude nonetheless. After rounds at The Harvest Club, a player-friendly route that swerves through an orchard, Gallagher’s Canyon, one of my all-time favourites in the Okanagan, and Sunset Ranch, a long-standing local favourite and one of the best values in the region, it was time to head to Predator Ridge for the grand finale. Without a doubt, Predator Ridge is unequalled in the Thompson Okanagan. The luxurious course-side accommodation, the spa, the fitness center, the restaurants, the two spectacular golf courses, it all adds up to one of the best golf resorts in the entire country. While the original Les Furber-designed Predator Course is a super-fun layout that, at times, feels like Old World links golf, the dramatic Ridge Course is the trump card here. The course, designed by architect Doug Carrick, is a wild, roller-coaster ride through mountainous terrain high above Okanagan Lake. The views are stunningly good and the golf holes are highly memorable and exceedingly playable. In short, this is resort golf at its finest! After being paired up with J.D., a professional musician touring through the area with his rock band (we talked about music non-stop), and having one of the most enjoyable and laugh-filled rounds on record, my game completely fell apart. Yes, I did hit that nice 7-iron and, naturally, failed to take advantage. However, I took advantage in other ways. Because, well, when you’re “on tour” in the Thompson Okanagan, it’s not hard to do.

It was 2005 or so, Heidi Noble and her husband Michael Dinn had just made the plunge, deciding to move to and live in Naramata, in the Okanagan Valley, full time. Chef Andrew Richardson, himself in transit from a stint at The French Laundry, on his was to Michelin stars in England, was finishing lunch, and Heidi was explaining their faith in the Valley, how it was still young in terms of wine tourism, but soon would be a true destination spot. They had started making wine, almost as a passionate hobby at first, under the name of Joie Farm Winery, and were running a cooking school. It seemed poised to graduate into a grander set of tourist options. She was right, and then some, but she was not alone. Visitors both regular and casual to the Okanagan Valley

this summer can be forgiven for what they do not know: this region, full of nice restaurants and hotels, all manner of artisan cheese and baked goods shops, and sculpted, manicured vineyards on nearly every horizon, was not so long ago bereft, to a large degree, of all of the above. At the dawn of the 1970s, there were only two commercial vinifera grape growers in the Okanagan, supplying half a dozen wineries. Today, the wineries number nearly 200, quality is advancing at every vintage, and grape growers have supplanted fruit growers by the dozens. The visitor of today need not know the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history on an intimate level in order to appreciate their twoweek experience, but it is a fascinating tale, and of

course cannot be told by any one voice. Some of the area’s major roads are named after very early wine pioneers: Pandosy and Casorso among them. Howard Soon is Chief Winemaker for Peller Estates Okanagan, which includes Sandhill, Peller, Calona (one of those two originals from the ‘60s), and Red Rooster. He muses about his early days: “The Capozzis had a long run, and were really dedicated to the idea of making real wine in the Okanagan. But they were more or less out of it when Calona started making commercial wine. It was nothing like you see today, with vineyards almost everywhere, and winery signs on every corner. Back then, it was hard to even have a serious conversation about running a winery as a successful business.” Christine Coletta, co-founder and co-owner of Okanagan Crush Pad, smiles at the thought of her first foray into the local wine world. “Those were the days of cocktail drinks, when the idea of having a glass of wine with dinner was pretty new. But there were people in place, Like Anthony, and Harry McWatters, and Howard, who believed in it. So

the idea of a Vintner’s Quality Association (VQA) took hold.” There was also a BC Wine Institute, and David Scholefield, then head buyer for the BC Government’s Liquor Control Board, along with such people as Ian Tostenson on the tourism and marketing side, and Art Kendall, all became strong advocates for giving Okanagan wines a chance. Coletta says “restaurants like Bishop’s, Raintree, and then Raincity Grill, began showcasing local wines, along with local foods, and the idea began, that there was a “new” Okanagan to explore. But it involved a relentless telling of the story.” Howard recalls the very first big wine dinner, held at the Calona winery, still in place at its Richter Street address in Kelowna. “All sorts of media and VIPs were invited, and it was a big deal, the first of its kind. I think people were shocked at how good it was, and began to see what the possibilities were.” Senator Ross Fitzpatrick, founder of CedarCreek Estate Winery, notes that “with the coming of the Free Trade Agreement, in 1989, there was a rush to pull out vines, but our thought was that if we had to compete with California, we just had to make quality wine, and wine that expressed our region.” It was a call to arms, in a way, and

wineries like CedarCreek, Quail’s Gate, Gehringer, Sumac Ridge and Hainle stuck with it, using ever-evolving vineyard and winemaking practices and growing the quality levels. An illustrative example of how the industry has grown, and how it somehow still remains true to its artisanal roots, is Ex Nihilo winery. “Out of nothing”, into a boutique winery of high quality wines, created by passionate people. In this case, winemaker Rob Thielicke (who also works with Joie Farm) and David Fredericks make wines that reflect the vision that owners Jeff and Decoa Harder and Jay and Twila Paulson, had always dreamt of, from their early visits to Napa Valley to today’s reality in Okanagan’s Lake District. There are many such examples, and they make a tour of the valley, sub-region by subregion, an entrancing, educational, edifying experience. Howard Soon, Master Winemaker at Sandhill, and overseer of all things Peller Estates, says, candidly, “back the 1960s, there were really only three or four people growing vinifera grapes. At that stage, you just could not imagine all the vines, restaurants, hotels, and the explosion of wineries. It’s like a different world today.” Howard should know, since he has been at Calona wines (purchased

by Peller in 2008) for over 30 years, and has seen the evolution, steady, but not slow. “It took some pioneers, for sure, the Fitzpatricks at CedarCreek, the Stewarts at Quail’s Gate, Mission Hill of course, and a few really small operations who brought quality to the top of the list.” There is serious, and likely fruitful, talk these days of creating sub-appellations for the region, to reflect the wide variance in terroir, from north to south, and the attendant differences in what grapes will flourish in what soils. People like Michael Bartier, who works at Okanagan Crush Pad doing custom winemaking jobs for various small producers, and who makes two commercial wines of his own, the B & S wines, and Haywire. Wine consultants from around the world are beginning to study the region, and while still in its relative infancy, it is safe at this point to say the Okanagan will continue to evolve as a small but dedicated area for fine wines. With all this growth in the wine industry, comes exciting new developments in tourism. It is not any longer a camper trailer by the lake, for week of slow sunning and slower campfires, although that is still very doable. Restaurants like the dining room at The Eldorado hotel,

At Hillside, we are moving toward a small, very focused portfolio. Coming from 23 years with a winery holding a large and diverse portfolio, I find that each decision I make now has greater import—there is no room for error. Although a tad nervewracking, this is challenging and exhilarating… especially when the final wine hits the bottle. Oh, and my new fitness routine?— showing up for work! What is your vision for the Okanagan Valley? Our region and vines being so young, we are recognizing terroir differences and flavor complexity in the wines only now, as the vines come “of age”. What is your all-time favorite wine pairing? Hillside Cellars 2012 Gewurztraminer... and fresh air. Why do you blend wines? A good blend highlights the qualities of the component wines in addition to creating new aroma and flavour characteristics such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A great blend takes the wine to a different level (there’s magic here) and happens only when the components are exceptional themselves. Each vintage and vineyard block must be respected for its unique qualities. After graduating from university, I worked in the Shuswap as a Park Ranger. In 2000, I decided my goal was to live in the South Okanagan, so I changed careers, went to work in the vineyards and learned about wine at Larch Hills Winery in Salmon Arm. I earned my Viticulture Certificate at OUC in Penticton, and while continually learning how to start a new vineyard from scratch, I began building up my sales portfolio for various wineries. Eventually I became Noble Ridge Winery’s Vineyard Manager. In 2006, I was hired by Dirty Laundry Vineyard as their Operations Manager, and today my position is Sales & Marketing Manager/Viticulturist. I work with 22 family vineyards, as well as the 3 DLV vineyards in Summerland. The premise is, I overlook what we buy and grow so we know exactly what goes into our bottles… and it better be good. In your opinion, what grape is best suited for the Okanagan?

I feel some of the best varieties are in the Pinot Family. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and even Pinot Noir in the gravelly regions, all grow & show quite well. Gewurztraminer also does extremely well and is the signature grape for Dirty Laundry. For the reds, I believe Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah do very well in the far southern regions of the Okanagan. Multiple awards from various competitions are proving this case.

We understand what Robert Mondavi intended when he coined the expression “Wine is Life”. Here at Dirty Laundry, in the sun drenched hills of the Okanagan Valley, one’s whole being is captivated by the beauty and serenity of the vineyard and the ebb and flow of the industry in which the fertility of the terroir merges with the talent and inspiration of the viticulturist and winemaker to produce the finest of Valley wines.

Who do you look up to most in the industry?

I have always admired Calona Wines and Sandhill’s owner/ winemaker, Howard Soon. I met him when I was in the vineyards of Larch Hills and I was impressed by his knowledge & kindness. 12 years later, I still hold that respect for someone who works so hard, has succeeded in his quest to be a great winemaker and maintains the respect of his peers as an all-round ‘nice guy.’

Tinhorn Creek, Poplar Grove, Therapy, all have a few rooms available. Spirit Ridge, down at the Nkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Mip Cellars Winery site, is a larger, very nice resort. And this is becoming more and more common, making a visit to wine country all the more pleasant for your dreams to be dreamt amongst the vines. At CedarCreek, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo and The Sam Roberts Band are among the performers at a delightful, canopied, outside venue a few paces off the winery itself. At Mission Hill, a summer concert series is now a fixture, with LeAnn Rimes and Pink Martini playing in the amphitheater. At CedarCreek almost any Saturday of the season, another rising trend: make your vows among the vines. Dining

options are also plentiful at many wineries. Summerhill, one of the busiest of them all, with its now-famous pyramid and splendid terrace view of Lake Okanagan, is just one example, where honest, really good food, and wines by the glass options make for a memorable visit. Okanagan Spirits makes small batches of such delights as eaux-de-vie and absinthe, and some pretty fabulous vodka, gin and whisky as well, and the awards keep rolling in, even on the international stage. Well worth a visit, as is the delightful Elephant Island fruit wine winery, where the wines are not overly sweet and cloying, but rather sharp and focused, tasty representations of the fruit they were born from. All in all, a week seems too short a time to get it all in. Planning is a must, and even then you may well have to adjust and prioritize anew, since there will be so much to see and do, and some of it will happen as the day unfolds, unplanned. Just make sure to leave enough trunk space for your return home, to bring back some liquid memories of the visit, which in turn will motivate you, over the winter months, of how much you want to go back next year.

I was born in Summerland and grew up farming my family’s apple orchard so I was no stranger to the beauty and bounty of the Okanagan Valley. About ten years ago, my wife Barb and I decided that the Okanagan Valley was the most beautiful place we had ever been. My passion is great wine and I knew that the Okanagan Valley could produce the fruit that would allow us to make world-class wines. We decided then and there to move back to the Okanagan Valley. How do you consistently produce such high quality wines? Courage in our vineyards and patience in our cellars. To make great wine, every aspect of our vineyards must be nurtured. It takes a courageous team to make the right choices in the vineyards and collective patience to wait for nature to fully develop our grapes. The Poplar Grove red wines are kept in our cellar for at least 3 years before they are released to ensure they are ready – we don’t rush the process.

What is your vision for the Okanagan Valley? The Valley has attracted so much talent, all with an incredible amount of commitment to the land and to continuous improvement to the winemaking processes. I see wineries creating interactive experiences for wine lovers who are looking to connect with the art and science of making wines in a memorable way. I also see a growing integration of local culinary know-how. Nothing beats taking in the valley view while sipping an outstanding Okanagan wine paired with a locally sourced culinary creation. What is your all-time favorite wine pairing? Last summer, the Vanilla Pod, one of my favorite restaurants, moved from its original location in Summerland to join us at Poplar Grove. On July long weekend, as friends and I were sitting on the Vanilla Pod patio waiting for the fireworks, we opened a bottle of the 2007 Legacy and had it with Chef Bruno’s seared rare beef tenderloin topped with warmed olive oil and finished with sea salt. It was a perfect Okanagan summer evening.

What does it mean by World Class Distillery designation? Annually, the World Spirits Organization in Klagenfurt Austria hosts a competition encouraging distilleries from all over the world to enter their products for peer review. In March 2013, we entered ten of our spirits which received great acclaim. The Spirits Organization saw fit to award us the designation of World Class Distillery, along with Distillery of the Year and Spirit of the Year for our Blackcurrant Liqueur. Where do you source your raw material from? We use a large volume of fruit to make many of our spirits. Located in the Okanagan Valley we have a great source of fresh fruit grown right on our doorstep. In addition to the Okanagan Valley, we do source some of our berries from the Vancouver coast and local grains that are processed at neighbouring breweries.

A Mid Summers Eve In Spring... It’s almost five o’clock on a Friday evening. I’m sitting in the shade on my deck, looking out at Okanagan Lake. We have a fantastic lake view that looks across at downtown Kelowna. It’s 30 degrees - in the shade - and the weather app on my phone says it feels like 29C. It’s like that here. Humidity? That’s not something we think about in the Okanagan Valley. Next to me is today’s constant companion - a CabernetSauvignon from Sumac Ridge - perhaps one of the most storied wineries in the Okanagan. It was started by the Godfather of the Okanagan wine industry - Harry McWatters. But that’s another story for another time - or

another writer. This is how many of us live here in the Okanagan. And yes, some of us get to have a glass of wine while we are working. I’ve written extensively over the years on the Okanagan lifestyle. I’ve boasted a little about the climate, the laidback lifestyle that is only one step faster than Island time, and the plethora (yeah, I just used plethora) of things we have at our fingertips for recreational and social enjoyment. And I could go on...and on. I love it here. And who wouldn’t? I did mention it is 30 degrees in the shade, right? It’s a nice way to start a weekend, although it’s been like this all week.

Living here is, as I’ve professed for the last 13 years, sweet. Very few people leave. I thought about it once, but after five minutes with my pros and cons list, I poured another glass of wine and settled in for the long term. I don’t have a friend back East that asks “When are you moving home?” And without taking it as a sign, I can say the only person who ever wanted me to move back home was my Mother. But all mothers want their baby close to home. Five-twenty. I checked again. It’s still 30 degrees. From my viewpoint here in West Kelowna, I can see the Dilworth Mountain neighbourhoods with their amazing views back towards me. At night, the city lights stretch down the lake and disappear into the water. Friends live up near the top of Dilworth. We’ve sat out on the deck to sip wine and watch the sun set on many evenings. It never gets old. They, too, are living the lifestyle every day. Just off to my left is Wilden’s Skylands. The neighbourhood looks up and

down the lake and across the city. They may be some of the finest views in the city. I also have friends who just built a new home in Wilden. They called it the perfect family neighbourhood. Beautiful homes, quiet streets and lots of trees and wildlife - the kind you love to see. His kids love it. A few kilometers north on Highway 97, about 20 minutes from Kelowna International Airport, is Predator Ridge aptly names after the beautiful birds of prey that claim the area as part of their natural habitat. Predator Ridge was a breakthrough community in the Okanagan Valley. It redefined the concept of community living. My first summer living here the “Skins” game was held up there. Canada’s Mike Weir played alongside Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Sergio Garcia - who purchased a home at Predator Ridge - a testament to how wonderful the courses are there, and how private, or perhaps unintrusive the locals are at Predator Ridge Resort.

A little south of where I live, in Peachland, is Ponderosa. It used to be little more than a small, easy-playing golf course. However, like so many great golf resort communities here in the Valley, another whale, or should I say shark, put his name on a new course. Greg Norman redesigned Ponderosa a few years ago, and the real estate development followed suit. It may be one of the true hidden gems in the Okanagan, but we’re not shy about sharing the news. It’s like most communities here - an incredible place to live and play. Six-Fifteen. Still enjoying the Cab-Sav. We just dipped to 28C. It is simply sublime here. When you look into living here in the Okanagan Valley and you will at some point, possibly just out of curiosity

- you’ll discover that the biggest name in Okanagan real estate isn’t a community, or neighbourhood, or residential developer. It’s an actual name. Jane Hoffman has been here a long time. She’s established, perhaps, the most well known and most respected real estate partnership in Kelowna. She’s known for having a huge percentage of the over-a-million listings in the valley. But not everything she lists is over a million, because there are homes in all price ranges. That might be why we tend to use the expression “Cashing out of Toronto (or Calgary or Vancouver or, even, Winnipeg)”. It seems developers, real estate agents, and even bankers are very upbeat about the Okanagan Valley. Prices have held fairly well over the last five years, and the only naysayers seem to be the few in government who are trying

to control inflation. And even though I know people who just sold their home for double what they paid for it nine years ago, it is, by all comparisons in the country, still very affordable here. What I’d love to see people try to assess in the Okanagan Valley is not the cost of living, but the cost of lifestyle. There’s an equation worthy of discussion. And while I have to admit this is completely unscientific, I would hazard a guess that the benefits to living here far outweigh the disadvantages. They have for me. And anyone I ask says the same thing. This may be the best place in Canada to live. Yes, we all become a little more bias after being here for a while, and most of us can’t imagine ever leaving. Here’s the thing. I was in Toronto recently, and I paid the hotel concierge to go down the street to get me a bag of chips because it was too cold to go out. I’d never do that here. You’d probably never do that here. And why would

you have to do it? People waterski, stand-up paddle board, and run and hike year round. Friends of mine ride mountain and road bikes twelve months of the year. Me? I might be a little soft and stick to the ski resorts in winter. But one friend posted on Facebook the other day that he missed the winter rides when it was 8 or 10 degrees. That’s a tough lifestyle to beat. Oh...it’s almost seven and still 27C. The lake and city are quiet, but in a little over an hour the street lights will be on, the parks and beaches will still be populated and restaurant patios and decks on homes throughout the Okanagan Valley will be brimming with life; happy, relaxed faces; amazing local and regional wines; and people from all over the world who now call the Okanagan Valley home. I think it’s time to open a Pinot Noir. There’s one from Hillside Estate Winery in the cellar. It sounds perfect.

Whether you are getting here by air or by car, it has never been easier. The Kelowna International Airport is continually growing and expanding to meet demands, and has actually seen the world’s largest aircraft land here. And it seems that almost every stretch of road has been made wider or is currently getting wider. All the traditional sports are highly visible here, cycling, soccer, skateboarding and skiing/snowboarding. But there is also a little bit of a “cool sport” movement going on in Kelowna. Wakesurfing, stand up paddle boarding, and kite boarding are also becoming regular sights on the waterfront. Because the days are so long and the summer season stretches on, Kelowna is an obvious choice for boating, golfing and just sitting on a beach soaking it all in. If sitting on the beach is too relaxing for you, get out and play one the many awe-inspiring golf courses in the area. Long, lush fairways flanked by hillsides and creeks. Will surely challenge golfers of every skill level. The seasons are fairly cut and dry. Short, mild winters in town and long, hot, dry summers, while the shoulder seasons are very short and uneventful. While driving west across the bridge from Kelowna it quickly becomes evident that most (if not all) big box stores are visible, some of them the largest ones in Canada! There is a large part of West Kelowna that lives along the water. Any areas that aren’t, are likely to be rows upon rows of grapes.

There are many very well established wineries in West Kelowna. Quails Gate & Mission Hill should be at the top of your wine tour list. Picturesque Quail’s Gate boasts a vineyard restaurant & patio with stunning views and delicious bites. Once again, beach life reigns supreme. Ideal for unwinding and camping, there are several camping and RV sites at Bear Creek Provincial Park, a very popular destination during the summer months.

A Sun Kissed Delight Peachland used to be a small town along the way that people just passed through. Now, it has become the destination. The waterfront in Peachland runs along the entire length of the downtown area, pebble and sandy beaches for miles. Great for walking, running, family outings or just kicking back under a tree and gazing out into the sun drenched abyss. On the hillside above Peachland is the Okanagan’s newest and greatest development project, Ponderosa. This grand development includes an 18 hole golf course and master planned community all under the endorsement of world famous golfer Greg Norman. The massive panoramic views make you feel like you are over looking the ocean. And as far as I’m concerned, if it is good enough for Greg Norman to put his name it, it is good enough for the rest of us!

Unwind Under The Sunny Skies

Zip Zone Adventure Park has zip lines that fly over Deep Creek Gorge at heights of almost 400 feet. For the more casual thrill seeker, Hardy Falls is a 20-30 minute walk over a network of bridges. Whether you need adventure or a more relaxing time, Peachland is simply amazing!

Early spring only makes sense in a town called Summerland. This lakeside community is the gateway to some of the finest wineries on the planet. The further south you go, the deeper you get. In support of this industry they have developed “Bottleneck Drive”. This features 12 unique wineries mapped out, one after the other. This is still super exciting for the non-wine drinker, as there is a lot more to these wineries & vineyards than just grapes! Biking and walking trails flank the lakeside, winding along through parks, marshes and waterfront resorts and restaurants. Like many of the other communities in the Okanagan, Summerland has deep agricultural roots. While driving up into the hills, be sure to notice that much of the surrounding area is orchard or vineyard. Be sure to stop at a road side stand for the freshest produce and vegetables. This kind of flavour will change your day! The olde English style downtown area sits above the waterfront. Enjoy shopping in the boutiques, restaurants, spas and various farmers markets. Golf, hike or just relax and soak up the scenery, Summerland, where summer never ends!

Penticton & Naramata Where Beaches and Vineyards Live Harmoniously If you have never been to Penticton in the summer then you are missing out on something special. This is the consummate “hot spot”, as the town site is lucky enough to have lakes on both sides of it. On the northern edge is Okanagan Lake and the beach that runs along Beach Ave, is simply amazing. It stretches for a few kilometers and is directly across the street from a long row of hotels, B&B’s, restaurants and services. It’s like having paradise downtown! South of the city is Skaha Lake which gives you a similar experience, yet somehow it is totally different. Lush parks with great shade trees and picnic tables flank the beach. This spot is more of a destination, meaning you can’t walk out of your hotel room and suddenly be at the beach. At both locations, the beaches slowly slip into their respective lakes, perfect for wadding in the water with kids, or going a little deeper and heading out for a swim. Penticton is a real beach community and stays ridiculously hot for much of the summer. Of course, while you are surrounded by so much water, boating, fishing and water sports are all at the forefront of popular things to do. I would also suggest

floating down the canal that connects Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. This is a true adventure! For winter sports enthusiasts, Apex Mountain Resort is the locals choice. Now Naramata is a different story all together! Located on the eastern shores of Okanagan Lake, this region is world famous for producing some of the finest wines around. It is easy to spot the terraced benches above the lake with row upon row of many different varieties of grapes. The vineyards have discovered that if you build it, they will come! Many of these businesses now have elaborate tasting rooms, restaurants and guesthouses. There is a whole lot more to owning a winery these days, with added features like concerts with big name musicians, helicopter tours, weddings and fine dining. To say that the game has changed is the last 20 years would be a major understatement. Of course all of the towns in this area share similar agricultural scenes. But, aside from grapes and fertile lands, there is still a whole lot more to do here. Come experience what Wine Country has to offer.

OLIVER Heard It Through The Grapevine … As you approach Oliver from either direction, the one thing that stands out the most is that there are no obvious lakes here. It would seem that most Okanagan communities are based around bodies of water. Well, that’s because this region is home to The Wine Capital of Canada. The valley and vineyards are contained by hillsides that act as an impressive backdrop, and as a result there is a great degree of temperature variation. Hot dry days are followed by cool dry nights, which are the perfect recipe for the world’s finest grapes.

While viticulture is main profession in Oliver there are still several other activities to keep you entertained. Vaseaux Lake is a wildland preserve that doesn’t allow engines on the water, but you are welcome to bring your rowboat, kayak, stand up paddleboard or even just your binoculars. There are dozens of species of birds that call Vaseaux Lake home. They are not only there in the summer, this is a resting spot for some year round and a stop over for others that come and go with the changing seasons.

Good wine has always been in style, but great wine seems to be the new thing. Many of these vintners are now being recognized for producing some amazing products. And, it’s not just wine that they are offering. Touring wineries and vineyards is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in British Columbia. Obviously wine is the main focus, but most peoples brains think of what would taste nice with that perfect glass of wine. Lucky for you, all of these difficult questions will be answered for you as your wine tour turns into and evening of live music and chef prepared culinary delights that pair precisely with what you are sipping.

While rows and rows of vines are visible from every side of the valley, the fertile lands are also ideal for many fruits and vegetables. One of the key ingredients that local chefs will admit to using are local, fresh ingredients. The flavours from a fruit or veggie that is bought from a roadside stand is unsurpassed. As Oliver is only a little bit further south geographically, the temperatures seem to be just a tad bit warmer during the days and the hot season lasts a little longer than you would find in the North Okanagan. Habitation of Desert Lands

Spring comes early in Osoyoos, and summer seemingly lasts forever. The climate here is hotter and drier than anywhere else in Canada. With little to no humidity and cooler enjoyable nights, it’s no wonder that people are flocking to the area. The word Osoyoos translates to “narrowing of the waters”. When you first lay eyes on this quaint little town, you will see that it all makes sense. Osoyoos Lake tapers in the middle and that is exactly where the town site lies. Less than five kilometers to the south is the Canada/US border. Often, Osoyoos is the hottest place in the country, day after day after day. As a result, the lake is the warmest freshwater lake in the country. As you can imagine, that is a huge draw for boaters, swimmers and beach loungers.

Of course in an environment where there is so much sun and summer, with that comes an outdoor lifestyle. Golf, cycling and any waters port are super popular. Swimming in the lake or one of the resorts pools is also a great way to pass some time! There has been an influx of super modern upscale accommodations in the area. Places like Watermark Beach Resort and Walnut Beach Resort have the best of all amenities and comfort and style. The real gem here is Nk’Mip Resort. This is “one stop shopping” at its finest, as they provide every aspect of relaxation from spa, winery and cultural centre, to golf and an RV park. Commercial orchards are still very visible and a huge part of the local economy. For obvious reasons, with the growing popularity of viticulture (the cultivation of grapevines) some have chosen to convert their crops to wineries. And, they have done so with great success. Nk’Mip Cellars, Adega on 45th Estate Winery, Moon Curser Vineyards and Young & Wyse Collection are true in-town Osoyoos wineries, while the hillsides and surrounding areas (towards Oliver) are littered with world famous brands.

The lazy days of summer are calling you. Close your eyes and picture your chair on the shoreline while your feet dangle into the warm water of the South Okanagan, seems like a pretty tough day to beat! Oh, and don’t forget that you will probably be enjoying a glass of local wine, delicious!
