WELCOME TO KAMLOOPS & THE THOMPSON OKANAGAN Welcome to Kamloops and the Thompson Okanagan! Ranches, rivers, canyons and lakes make this high country region prime for exploration & adventure. Kamloops, derived from the Secwepemc (Shuswap) word “Tk’emlúps”, which means “where the rivers meet”, and in this case referring to the flowing together of the North and South Thompson rivers. Water is not the only thing meeting in Kamloops-- the Trans-Canada, the Yellowhead and Highway 97 all meet here, as do the two national rail lines, CP and CN. Kamloops is the Tournament Capital of Canada and has for many years been synonymous with first-class events. Known as BC’s Friendliest City, the community opens its arms wide and welcomes visitors, spectators and participants to come bask in its warmth and renowned hospitality and enjoy what the city has to offer--great golfing and restaurants, wild fly-fishing and whitewater rafting, and a winter wonderland of snow sport activities. Sun Peaks, a world renowned ski resort, is located just 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops.

6 2013/2014

If you’re just starting out, or maybe it’s a family day, Harper Mountain can provide for you as well. Just a quick 20 minutes from Kamloops, Harper Mountain offers over 1400 vertical feet of elevation and 400 acres of fun! Kamloops is a chic urban jewel set amidst a wild western landscape in the heart of BC—there’s nothing else quite like it. Barriere, just 45 minutes north of Kamloops on Hwy 5, is a unique community full of character. With its laid back attitude, Barriere is there to accommodate those who genuinely enjoy pristine lake views, powder drenched slopes and lush, abundant forests. Offering a wide variety of recreational opportunities, lake fishing in the area is considered some of the best in BC. Every year the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo entertains spectators with its rodeo, agricultural shows and royalty

pageant. In the wintertime, visitors bustle up to Barriere as the area is quickly becoming a winter sanctuary for snowmobile and cross-country skiing enthusiasts. The summer, just as promising as the winter, offers all manner of water sports as the gorgeous lakes melt. Cache Creek, a village that centers its image with the 1950’s and 1960’s in mind, is at the junction of the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 97. The Bonaparte River runs through Cache Creek, adding to the scenery of rolling desert hills, covered in sagebrush and cactus. While mining and forestry are large players in the Cache Creek economy, tourism is the number 1 leader. Before the Trans Canada Highway, Cache Creek was still a busy town. In the mid 1800’s, those who followed the gold rush heading to the Caribou Gold Fields, found Cache Creek to be an excellent stopping point— something travelers can still find today.

Kamloops Waterfront Park PoYang, flickr.com

Logan Lake has become famous for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and being the friendliest and cleanest community in the province. Residents invite visitors to come enjoy their beautiful mountains, lakes and forests that surround the community. The locals also live here because they enjoy the diverse recreational opportunities that include cross country skiing, snowmobiling, curling, hockey, fishing and ice fishing, golfing, hiking, ATV riding, and biking. Recently the community has added the 18-hole Copper Ridge Disc Golf Course, and a new ‘state-of-the-art’ Bike Skills Park for its youth. Logan Lake has become a leading example of what a Fire Smart community can look like, by developing one of the first Community Wildfire Protection Plans in BC. In addition to protecting the community from wildfire, these efforts have allowed the community to build an extensive trail network that is continually being improved upon.

Chase (located on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake) is the western gateway to the recreational brilliance of the Shuswap Region. Named after Whitfield Chase who was the first non-native settler to farm the area and later incorporated in 1969, Chase has grown into a tourist destination full of excitement with deep historical roots. Sunshine, lakes, mountains and golf courses make Chase a year round vacation paradise. Little Shuswap Lake is a prime spot for boating, fishing and relaxing. If you are more inclined to go hiking, there are many trail systems to explore and enjoy. There is also Talking Rock Golf Course, a new championship design golf course that offers golfers a first class golf experience complete with amazing views of the surroundings. The entire region is collectively known as “The Shuswap”. Shuswap Lake is a huge “starfish” shaped lake with many fingers and arms to discover and venture into. Salmon Arm is located on

8 2013/2014

the southern tip, while Sicamous is located furthest east, around the meeting of all four tips, the Cinnemousun Narrows, or just simply, the Narrows. Chase flanks the region to the west, while Seymour Arm is the northern most tip, with Anstey Arm just over the other side of the mountain. Houseboating is insanely popular in this part of the world—consequently, Sicamous is the “Houseboating Capital of Canada”. While Houseboating may be the most popular thing to do here, camping is a very close second. The Shuswap region boasts more than 1,000 km of shoreline to explore, and roughly 8 provincially designated parks, with multitudes of camping areas beckoning the adventurous. Many offer sites and limited amenities, but for those who are in the true spirit of camping, there is walk-in/wilderness camping available as well. All of these communities, each unique, come together to form an outdoor enthusiasts dream. These are year round destinations with something for everyone. From snowmobiling to ice

fishing, and watersports to golf, we invite you to enjoy all that this region has to offer. Sun Peaks is a year round destination resort. Located just 45 minutes North of Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort offers an adventure for every person in every season of the year. Sitting at 4,100ft in the village, this resort shares its mountain fresh air and panoramic view with all its guests. Sun Peaks provides 15 hiking trails, 30 biking trails, plus a dirt jumping zone and a prestigious 18-hole golf course for the summertime visitors. Come visit in the winter for some award-winning skiing and snowboarding. With over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain, Sun Peaks is the second largest ski area in British Columbia. Offering 11 various lifts to get you around to the 2 alpine bowls, 122 trails and 12 gladded areas, one could not possibly be bored on this hill! Come off the hill after a day of fun and find yourself in the sprawling village of Sun Peaks. Here you can find shopping, dining, accommodations and even a

TOTA/Allen Jones

nightclub. No lack of entertainment here! So grab your gear, jump in the car, and head up to Sun Peaks Resort, where the adventure awaits. Tobiano, where golf, lake, community and lifestyle collide! A new community with unobstructed lake and mountain vistas, with plans of expanding to 1100 homes, a full service marina, a world class equestrian centre and a 450 room hotel. And of course, they also offer what some claim to be one of the most spectacular golf courses on the planet. Tobiano has something that will appeal to all your visual senses and outdoor needs. The Equestrian Neighbourhoods offers spectacular, big sky views in all directions, this is where ranch meets resort. Located on Kamloops Lake, you will be overwhelmed with calm water, rusty cliffs and lush fairways. If you are contemplating investing or living in the Kamloops area, Tobiano should be your new home.
