he secret to Bagelfest’s success over the past 25 years has been a simple phrase: “Go for it!” When the community festival started there was just a free feed of those chewy delights made in Mattoon. But the community has never backed down from adding more to Bagelfest. “Individual things started when because people would call the Chamber of Commerce office and say we
T
need this or that for Bagelfest. We always told them, ‘That’s a good idea; go for it,’” said Joan Record, who used to help coordinate Bagelfests through the Chamber and helped as a Bagelfest volunteer. The Bagelfest schedule this year represents that communal brainstorming through the years, which added a foot race, beauty pageants, a baby contest, a parade, talented dog contest, kids games and musical entertainment over a few days and
nights. And many events honor the bagel name, from Beautiful Bagel Baby, Bagel Bow Wow to the parade theme this year, “Back to the Bagel.” The irony is Bagelfest started as a way for Lender’s Bagels to introduce itself to Mattoon. Now the festival helps Mattoon get its name smeared in a good way across the globe, thanks to the odd mix of a bagel factory in the heart of the corn belt. “We’re not aware of any other
bagelfests. Now Bagelfest is iconic for Mattoon,” said Mattoon Tourism Director Angelia Burgett. “People ask why in Mattoon, or even the Midwest do you have a festival for bagels? People in Mattoon have been quoted in papers and on broadcasts in England, to San Francisco. For Mattoon it shows we are a very hospitable city and that shows at Bagelfest time.”

Craig Morgan, known for 2003’s ‘Almost Home’ and other hits, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday on the main stage in Peterson Park.
Craig Morgan will take the stage at Bagelfest fresh from completing a tour with Carrie Underwood and launching a new show on the Outdoor Channel. The country star, known for 2003’s “Almost Home” and other hits, is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday on the main stage at Peterson Park. Reserved seating is $15 and general admission lawn seating is $10. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.mattoonbagelfest.com or at the Peterson House. Morgan toured this spring with Underwood and promoted his new single, “This Ain’t Nothin’,” during the tour. His new All Access Outdoors show recently debuted on the Outdoor Channel. The program follows Morgan as he hunts big game and rides motocross in North America, often accompanied by special guests. This ongoing success builds on “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” from Morgan’s 2005 album “My Kind of Livin’,” being the most played country song that year, according to biographical information posted on Bagelfest’s website. His 2006 album, “Little Bit of Life,”
produced top 10 hits with “International Harvester,” “Tough” and the title track. He was nominated for Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in both 2006 and 2007. “People know the music,” Morgan said. “When they come to my shows, they might know the latest single, or they may know a previous single. But sometimes I can read their lips, they’re going, ‘Oh, I didn’t know he sang that one,’ or ‘I forgot about that song.’” Morgan, who was raised in Tennessee, served 10 years on active duty in the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Morgan wrote and and performed country music while in the Army, including opening for a Sawyer Brown concert in South Korea. He regularly goes overseas to perform USO shows for military service members. After concerts, Morgan can often be found sweeping the stage and helping load the truck. “My dad and mom raised me to be grateful and thankful and appreciative. They always told me, if somebody loans you something, give it back in better shape than what you get it in,” Morgan said.
Country family trio The Band Perry to perform on Friday By DAWN JAMES Staff Writer
With hit songs such as “Hip to my Heart” and “If I Die Young” rising on the country music charts, The Band Perry takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday at Peterson Park as part of this year’s featured entertainment at Bagelfest. Tickets for the concert are $10 and are available at www.mattoonbagelfest.com or at the Peterson House. The two-brother, one-sister trio features siblings Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry, who have been playing together professionally as a band since 2005. Listening to their parents’ favorite tunes growing up, the band was introduced early in life to a variety of music styles including rock, country and soul. “Daddy rocked us to sleep with the Rolling Stones; Mama woke us up with Loretta Lynn. So we get it honest,” Kimberly said on their website. Kimberly is the lead vocalist and guitarist and said as a musician she was influenced by artists like Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. Reid, who plays bass and also sings backup vocals, said he was influenced most by the Beatles and Paul Submitted Photo
