‘BACK TO THE BAGEL’: 25TH YEAR OF BAGELFEST

July 13, 2010

Some say Bagelfest is just warming up

By HERB MEEKER Staff Writer

he secret to Bagelfest’s success over the past 25 years has been a simple phrase: “Go for it!” When the community festival started there was just a free feed of those chewy delights made in Mattoon. But the community has never backed down from adding more to Bagelfest. “Individual things started when because people would call the Chamber of Commerce office and say we

T

need this or that for Bagelfest. We always told them, ‘That’s a good idea; go for it,’” said Joan Record, who used to help coordinate Bagelfests through the Chamber and helped as a Bagelfest volunteer. The Bagelfest schedule this year represents that communal brainstorming through the years, which added a foot race, beauty pageants, a baby contest, a parade, talented dog contest, kids games and musical entertainment over a few days and

nights. And many events honor the bagel name, from Beautiful Bagel Baby, Bagel Bow Wow to the parade theme this year, “Back to the Bagel.” The irony is Bagelfest started as a way for Lender’s Bagels to introduce itself to Mattoon. Now the festival helps Mattoon get its name smeared in a good way across the globe, thanks to the odd mix of a bagel factory in the heart of the corn belt. “We’re not aware of any other

bagelfests. Now Bagelfest is iconic for Mattoon,” said Mattoon Tourism Director Angelia Burgett. “People ask why in Mattoon, or even the Midwest do you have a festival for bagels? People in Mattoon have been quoted in papers and on broadcasts in England, to San Francisco. For Mattoon it shows we are a very hospitable city and that shows at Bagelfest time.”

Craig Morgan, known for 2003’s ‘Almost Home’ and other hits, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday on the main stage in Peterson Park.

Craig Morgan will take the stage at Bagelfest fresh from completing a tour with Carrie Underwood and launching a new show on the Outdoor Channel. The country star, known for 2003’s “Almost Home” and other hits, is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Saturday on the main stage at Peterson Park. Reserved seating is $15 and general admission lawn seating is $10. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.mattoonbagelfest.com or at the Peterson House. Morgan toured this spring with Underwood and promoted his new single, “This Ain’t Nothin’,” during the tour. His new All Access Outdoors show recently debuted on the Outdoor Channel. The program follows Morgan as he hunts big game and rides motocross in North America, often accompanied by special guests. This ongoing success builds on “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” from Morgan’s 2005 album “My Kind of Livin’,” being the most played country song that year, according to biographical information posted on Bagelfest’s website. His 2006 album, “Little Bit of Life,”

produced top 10 hits with “International Harvester,” “Tough” and the title track. He was nominated for Top New Male Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in both 2006 and 2007. “People know the music,” Morgan said. “When they come to my shows, they might know the latest single, or they may know a previous single. But sometimes I can read their lips, they’re going, ‘Oh, I didn’t know he sang that one,’ or ‘I forgot about that song.’” Morgan, who was raised in Tennessee, served 10 years on active duty in the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Morgan wrote and and performed country music while in the Army, including opening for a Sawyer Brown concert in South Korea. He regularly goes overseas to perform USO shows for military service members. After concerts, Morgan can often be found sweeping the stage and helping load the truck. “My dad and mom raised me to be grateful and thankful and appreciative. They always told me, if somebody loans you something, give it back in better shape than what you get it in,” Morgan said.

Country family trio The Band Perry to perform on Friday By DAWN JAMES Staff Writer

With hit songs such as “Hip to my Heart” and “If I Die Young” rising on the country music charts, The Band Perry takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday at Peterson Park as part of this year’s featured entertainment at Bagelfest. Tickets for the concert are $10 and are available at www.mattoonbagelfest.com or at the Peterson House. The two-brother, one-sister trio features siblings Kimberly, Neil and Reid Perry, who have been playing together professionally as a band since 2005. Listening to their parents’ favorite tunes growing up, the band was introduced early in life to a variety of music styles including rock, country and soul. “Daddy rocked us to sleep with the Rolling Stones; Mama woke us up with Loretta Lynn. So we get it honest,” Kimberly said on their website. Kimberly is the lead vocalist and guitarist and said as a musician she was influenced by artists like Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. Reid, who plays bass and also sings backup vocals, said he was influenced most by the Beatles and Paul Submitted Photo

A long breakfast table got Bagelfest rolling By HERB MEEKER Staff Writer

The long breakfast table was one of the early Bagel Breakfast traditions. When the Bagelfest celebration started a quarter of a century ago, the free breakfast was served in the downtown area of Broadway Avenue. There was a long continuous table stretching for several blocks. Volunteers kept serving bagels and refreshments and there were many times you would get to meet Murray Lender of Lender Bagels. How many factories get a chance to serve up part of their product for free? All that table space in the center of town helped expand Bagelfest to a communitywide festival through the years. It now draws people from across the country to Mattoon for more than free bagels. “Bagelfest started as a community festival when there was a request from Lender’s to the Mattoon Chamber to have a long table for serving bagels along

Broadway Avenue,” recalled Joan Record, who has been a very loyal Bagelfest volunteer through the years. “They had served bagels with the opening of their plant and they wanted to do more.” Thousands of people came to the long table in the early years of the festival, as a communal feed helped spark ideas for other fun events for Bagelfest. The long table is no more, but some things are still the same on the free meal that hands out thousands of free bagels to the crowd each Bagelfest, with free fixings included. The breakfast was a fun way of introducing Lender’s products to its new factory town. Two decades ago, many people thought of bagels as something only consumed in big cities or in Europe. Now, many area residents include the bagels in their menus, especially at breakfast. “Back then bagels were a novelty here. I’m not sure if it was because they were free or new to us. But thousands of people were willing to stand in line to get them,”

shade for munching down the bagels. The breakfast will start at 8 a.m. Saturday with the help of many Lender’s employees and volunteers. The bagels will be served through 10 a.m.

Record said. A few years ago, the breakfast was moved from Broadway Avenue near the celebration’s new location at Peterson Park to the DeMars Center building in the northwest corner of the public park. This offered two advantages: air conditioning for people in need to get out of the summer heat and some cool

PERRY Continued from Page 1 McCartney. Brother Neil, who plays the mandolin, the accordion, guitar and sings back-up vocals, named Sam Bush, Bryan Sutton and Chris Thile of Nickel Creek as some of his top influences as musicians. Kimberly said she began playing with a band at age 15 and that was 11 years ago. She said she can still remember not being able to sleep at night because she was so excited when she was first getting started with that band. In the beginning, Neil and Reid worked for Kimberly’s band, polishing cymbals and changing guitar strings. It was not long before the two were ready to start their own band. They became the opening act for their bigger sister’s band. Kimberly said, “They were like the mini-Beatles.” At the time, Kimberly wasn’t able to drive so her parents had to drive them to their performances, she said. Having played together a great deal throughout the years, the group has developed an enriched sound of family vocal harmonies and has found their niche in writing songs and making music. The group has nearly completed its second album. Kimberly said its first independent album had an edgier Rolling Stones type of sound. She credited that album as having played a valuable role in helping them get noticed in and around Nashville. In 2005 the Coca Cola Bottling Company hired them to

open all the dates of their “New Faces Of Country” tour that year. Kimberly said it was a great opportunity to meet top country artists and to be introduced to country radio. In 2008, the group met Bob Doyle, a longtime manager of Garth Brooks, and partnered with Josh Pegram to start writing songs and preparing for a new album, the band’s website said. Last summer, they signed with Republic Nashville as their recording label. By October they are planning to put the finishing touches on the album. Kimberly said, “‘If I Die Young’ was the first one we have penned for this album, and it’s really connected with a lot of folks on a lot of different levels,” she said. She said the song has really taken off in its first four weeks of radio. The group anticipates 10 or 11 tracks on the first album. Resonation Station to perform at bandshell By DAVE FOPAY Staff Writer

Imagine an acoustical version of one of Chuck Berry’s or the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ songs and you might have an idea of what to expect from Resonation Station. The Mattoon-based group is scheduled to play from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Rotary Bandshell at Peterson Park. Band member Collin Richey said they’ll do “a little bit of everything,” covering other bands’ music and performing their own, as well. “We pride ourselves on singing three-part harmony and putting our own flavor on whatever song we’re doing,” he said. Resonation Station features Richey on acoustic guitar, banjo and percussion; Jordan Schilling on acoustic and lap steel guitar; and Jeremy Taylor on acoustic guitar, harmonica and percussion. Bass player J.B. Faires will sit in on the Bagelfest performance, and all four will provide vocals. Richey said the band performs “a little bit of everything” that has “American roots,” rock, blues, bluegrass and more. Songs they often

cover include those recorded by the Grateful Dead, Chuck Berry, Martin Sexton, Huey Lewis, Men at Work and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band’s original songs are more “new age bluegrass,” as Richey described them, explaining that the sound will be similar to that of the band Old Crow Medicine Show. He said all the band members are in their 30s and listeners in their 20s and older will probably most enjoy the performance. Richey said he and Taylor have written and recorded music together before and while Resonation Station hasn’t recorded anything together, that might change soon. “We plan to get back into that and see what happens,” he said. Having Schilling join them marked the first time they could include the lap steel guitar in their performances, Richey said. Resonation Station has been performing for more than a year, though its members “have been playing for 15 years,” he said.

Mattoon High School Art Club students will share their talents with children and adults with the annual Bagelfest event, “Arts in the Park,” again this year. The art club students, led by MHS art teacher and club sponsor Janahn Kolden, have two new ideas for the young participants during Bagelfest. The art club booth will be located in front of the Peterson House this year. The event is free and for all ages, but especially geared to children. Activities will kick off following the conclusion of the parade on Saturday, which begins at 10:30 a.m. The arts booth will be open from about 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. This year’s activities will involve a beading project for the older children and a Japanese wind sock for the younger children. “We’ve got it geared for anyone,” Kolden said. Working with larger, more extensive art projects is the norm for Kolden and her volunteer students. But, these simpler arts and crafts offer just as much for the beginners. “Working with the younger students will be fun,” she said. “It will be instant gratification for me.” This year marks the fourth year the MHS Art Club will join forces with the Mattoon Arts Council, which is the sponsor of the event. The council provides all the supplies, while Kolden and her team of art club students man the booth and assist participants with the hands-on activities. All supplies, plus tables and chairs, will be provided beneath a tent in the park. In past years, the children have been able to work on art projects such as creating barnyard, wild animals and masquerade masks; air-dry modeling clay creations; and splatter painting. All ages are welcome.

TV chef and cookbook author will give demonstrations from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen area of the DeMars Center in Peterson Park.

‘Food Dude’ Kevin Roberts to share his bagel recipes By DAVE FOPAY Staff Writer

Cooking can be just as easy, and just as fun, as grabbing something at a fast food restaurant, Kevin Roberts believes. Now, he’s getting the chance to show how to follow that philosophy using Mattoon’s best-known baked good. The TV chef and cookbook author will do demonstrations at Bagelfest from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen area of the DeMars Center in Peterson Park. “The whole concept is kind of quick, simple, tasty, healthy,” Roberts said of his cooking approach in general and his planned Bagelfest demonstrations specifically. Roberts is based in San Diego and has appeared most recently on “The Today Show” and “The Early Show,” as well as on The Food Network. He’s also the host of the upcoming TLC network show “BBQ PitMasters” and regularly lectures on food and cooking on college campuses. Roberts focused his own college studies on health, nutrition and kinesiology, so he “knows cooking from the inside out,” according to his website. He said he plans to recreate one of his college demonstrations at Bagelfest, namely a recipe for breakfast that he calls “the biggest thing” to try to impress on younger adults. There also will be recipes for kids, including one he called “Little Lender Bagel Pizzas,”

and corn beef sliders on bagels for lunch. Festival visitors will be able to sample Roberts’ preparations and he’ll have copies of his cookbooks available. He’ll sign copies of those books and one created specially for Bagelfest, with recipes for Lender Bagels, starting at about 1:45 p.m. One of his earlier books, called “Munchies,” is for young adults, he said, and the other, “Kissing in the Kitchen,” is aimed at helping couples who want to cook together. “It’s just all quick, simple fun,” Roberts said, adding that he wants to make cooking more accessible and fun because it’s been “lost in the fast food world.” He also said he’s in the process of opening his fourth restaurant in the San Diego area, eateries he described as “a high-end sports bar concept.” Roberts is know as “the Food Dude” and a schedule of his appearances, including at Bagelfest, along with recipes and more, are available on his website, www.fooddudetv.com. The biographical information on his website says he was raised by a single mother who worked in restaurants in Los Angeles. It says he taught himself to cook at the age of 8 as an act of “self-preservation,” because “it was either cook or starve.”

Tail-waggers needed at Bagel Bow-Wow By DAWN SCHABBING Features Writer

Kevin Kilhoffer/Staff Photographer

Six-year-old Kaitlyn Smith of Mattoon, dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, holds China Pierce, as Toto, while listening to a question during the Bagel Bow-Wow Contest at Bagelfest 1009.

BAGELFEST Continued from Page 1 The enjoyment of visitors to Bagelfest have produced good memories for Record through the years. “I’ve always enjoyed seeing the number of volunteers always willing to stand there and hand out bagels. And it was fun watching people enjoy the bagels, too,” Record said. Bill Hamel, who with his wife, Glennie, has helped through the years with Bagelfest, remembers one man who spread the joy each year at Bagelfest. “They said that there wasn’t a hand that Murray Lender didn’t shake. He would sit down and talk to everyone he came across,” Hamel said. “He was really dynamic You wouldn’t think he headed the Lender company.” “We have a lot of photographs and memories of Murray,” Glennie Hamel said. “It’s been a wonderful friendship over the years.” Murray Lender has not attended Bagelfest for many years, but some of his family, including his son, Carl, daughter, Haris, and granddaughter, Raquel, will join in the breakfast serving line and the parade, which still includes an entry from Lender’s, now owned by Pinnacle Foods. Pinnacle executive Ray O’Brien is carrying on part of the Lender family tradi-

tion. This will be the fifth straight year he has attended the festival. He emphasized it is a trip that mixes a lot of pleasure during the bagel breakfast and the parade. “I like the breakfast. When you sell bagels and people like your bagels, then that is fun. And I like seeing people along the parade route. Lender’s is part of the fabric of the community,” O’Brien said. Now that Bagelfest has reached this milestone, the question is, how long will it continue in Mattoon? The city and some local companies or organizations sponsor many events, but the free bagels are a key part of the recipe for drawing the celebration. O’Brien is optimistic that his company and the community will keep Bagelfest rolling into the future. “There’s 25 down and why not 25 to go?” O’Brien said. “How many things have a history of going on for 25 years?”

One-hundred and one babies are entered in this year’s Beautiful Bagel Baby contest held as part of Bagelfest. The first 101 kids to register on June 16 were accepted into the competition, said Renee Fonner, promotion director at WMCI. This year’s contest theme is a play on the overall theme of “Back to the Bagel,” celebrating 25 years. “They can dress them up in their favorite decade of the past or take them on a walk in the future,” Fonner said.

An average tail-wagging count is between 25 and 35 contestants for the annual Bagel Bow-Wow Contest, planned again this year for the 25th annual Bagelfest celebration in Mattoon. Dogs and pet owners will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rotary Bandshell in Peterson Park. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. Organizer Bernie deBuhr said the dog event has been a part of Bagelfest for about 20 years. The location has changed a few times, in order to accommodate the pets (and owners) during some of the hottest days of the year. The contest will feature judging in four categories, deBuhr said. Included will be the “best good old dog” category, which seeks out the dog that’s the friendliest, happiest or most playful, deBuhr said. The “best bagel dog” will be dressed in the Bagelfest theme, which is “Back to the Bagel” this year. There are also categories for the dog with the “best trick” and “owner-pet look-alike.” Judges for the contest will be representatives of Soggy Paws pet care; K-9 Estates pet boarding; and Albin Animal Hospital veterinary office. Owners need to bring proof of vaccination, and all pets have to be on leashes during this event. The contest is open to all, and not limited to Mattoon residents. The local Mars Pet Care pet food plant donates the prizes. DeBuhr said prizes usually include a gift bag for all entries and larger prizes for the category winners.

Hundreds expected to Run for the Bagel By HERB MEEKER Staff Writer

The annual Run for the Bagel foot race drew more than 500 runners and walkers last year and organizers hope the 25th anniversary of Bagelfest draws a similar number. “Last year, we had 530 participants. That was a record year and the cooler weather helped. So far we’re expecting more than 400 this year,” said Jill Rohr, race director for the Run for the Bagel, which celebrates its 23rd year in 2010. The 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer competitors get started at 7:30 a.m. Saturday on the course near the bus station at Broadway Avenue and 19th Street. The one-mile competitors start out five minutes later at 7:35 a.m. The run and walk, sponsored by the Mattoon Area Family YMCA, heads toward the west end of Mattoon and then heads back. There will be traffic control and water stations along the way, Rohr said. “We have two water stations along the course. We have race course maps on the YMCA website,” Rohr said. The participants compete for honors, including medals, plaques and trophies, in different age categories. Those age divisions show how the Bagel Run crosses a lot of demographics. “Looking at our records from last year we have a lot of participants in the 10 and under division, and we also had a 78-year-old in one of the adult divisions. We draw all ages each year, as well as people from across the state,” Rohr said. The Bagel Run is about more than trophies and bragging rights. The registration fees — $22 for sign-ups prior to Wednesday and $27 until the day of most races — help pay for YMCA programs. The registration fee for the onemile fun run is $5. Signing up for the running and walking events is easy by signing up through the local YMCA or online at the YMCA website. Registration is completed before the races, as well from 6 to 7 a.m. prior at the race start. Awards will be distributed at 9:15 a.m. after the races in the YMCA facility at Richmond Avenue and North 16th Street, just a few blocks away from the starting point of the event. Rohr said the races are a popular way for the community to get into the spirit with the start of Bagelfest activities on Saturday. Many residents along the route cheer on the competitors.

Wells Fargo stagecoach to make rare appearance in annual parade By DAVE FOPAY Staff Writer

Bagelfest parade viewers Saturday will get a rare opportunity, as the Wells Fargo Stagecoach will be a featured entry. Even rarer than being able to see the stagecoach, apparently, is the chance to see it with horses actually pulling it. The only other reasonably nearby appearance scheduled for it this year is in Chicago, and that will be for display only, according Billie Lawyer at the Charleston office of the financial services company. “We’ve never had the stagecoach in this area,” Lawyer said. The local office submitted an application four or five months ago for the stagecoach to appear at Bagelfest and approval came less than a month ago, Lawyer said. An appearance depends on the number of requests, a parade’s theme and the area from which the request comes, she added. Wells Fargo has used the stagecoach to represent the company for more than 150 years, according to information from the company. The public appearance program began in 1958 and the coach now appears regularly in more than 700 events nationwide. The parade is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with entry lineup starting at 9:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of Western Avenue. The route will take the parade south to Broadway Avenue, where it will travel east and end at Peterson Park. The Wells Fargo stagecoach will be available for pictures from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., according to the company. Parade entries can be reserved until Wednesday by calling the Mattoon Tourism Office at 258-6286 or by going to the festival’s website, www.mattoonbagelfest.com. The Bagelfest parade is traditionally the largest parade of the year for Mattoon, according to the city’s tourism office. There were more than 100 entries in last year’s parade. Other entries already set for the parade include the Lender’s Bagels float that will recognize the 25th annual Bagelfest celebration; First United Methodist Church baking bagels; and Mars Petcare, with representatives handing out pet food to parade viewers.

25 years of Bagelfest: The history of Lender’s Bagels Editor’s Note: The following was originally published in the 1998 edition of the Bagel Gazette. n 1927, the only thing that Harry Lender brought with him to America (besides some clothes) was the bagel recipe he developed in Lublin, Poland. Seeing too many bagel makers in New York, he settled in New Haven, Conn. There he founded Lender’s Bagel Bakery: the company that would pioneer the bagel boom and build bagel awareness all over America. Within the first two years, Harry had saved enough money to send for his family in Lublin, Poland. The

I

Lender family spent the next 30 years forming bagels by hand and baking them in their small store-front bakery. Their sales began to flourish when Jewish neighbors bought Lender’s bagels for Sunday breakfast. Soon, the Lenders noticed that immigrants of all backgrounds were frequenting the small bakery. In 1955, the family began to package and sell their popular product in local grocery stores. The Lender brothers, Murray, Marvin and Sam, who were by now the driving forces in the business, froze their first bagel in 1962. This meant that the bagel could still be made preservative-

free, yet could be shipped anywhere. In the beginning, Murray Lender, the salesman of the family, began selling bagels to supermarkets in New York and New England. He wasn’t always received with the enthusiasm he brought to these sales meetings. In fact, back then many buyers felt that the frozen bagel was the craziest idea they had heard of in years! Fortunately, the Lender persistence won out and soon bagel lovers all over the East Coast were enjoying the convenience and quality of Lender’s frozen bagels. The next 14 years saw many weeks on the road for the Lenders. Market by mar-

ket, they expanded across America, much like the original pioneers did. After California became bagelized in 1976, Lender’s Bagels continued westward and northward, successfully reaching both Hawaii and Alaska. Today, Lender’s Bagels, whether the frozen, refrigerated or bread aisle variety, can be found in virtually every supermarket across the United States. America was eating so many Lender’s bagels that the little roundies couldn’t be baked fast enough. So, in 1976, Lender’s opened America’s then-largest bagel plant, in West Seneca, N.Y. As the bagel boom continued to

mount, in 1986 Lender’s opened the world’s largest bagel bakery in Mattoon. As the decades pass, Americans continue to discover the crusty outside and chewy inside goodness of bagels. Even a dreamer like Harry Lender would never have believed that his little backyard bakery could become the industry leader. But, as he used to tell his children, “It could only happen in America!”

Kevin Kilhoffer/Staff Photographer

Lender’s Bagels fact sheet Lender’s Bagel Bakery has been baking bagels since 1927 and is the world’s largest producer.

Milestones 1927: Harry Lender arrives from Poland and founds Lender’s Bagel Bakery in New Haven, Conn. 1955: Lender’s Bagels are packaged and sold in local supermarkets for the first time. 1962: Lender’s Bagels are frozen for the first time. 1965: Lender’s opens the first automated bagel plant in West Haven, Conn. 1984: Lender’s Bagels is purchased by Kraft Foods. 1986: Lender’s world’s largest bagel bakery opens in Mattoon. 1996: Lender’s bakes the World’s Largest Bagel (563 pounds) and it is accepted

into the Guinness Book of World Records for the 1997 edition. 1998: Lender’s introduces a new blueberry flavor by baking a 650-pound blueberry bagel, thereby breaking its own Guinness record. 1997: Kraft sells Lender's Bagels to Kellogg’s. 1999: Lender’s Bagels is sold to Aurora Foods. 2003: Lender’s Bagels becomes a product of Pinnacle Foods.

Points of distinction Lender’s Bagels are shaped, not stamped out. This creates the unique size and shape of each one. Lender’s Bagels are authentic. They are waterboiled and hearthbaked directly in the oven without the use of a pan.

Four brothers make up the Christian rock band Remedy Drive.

Remedy Drive to kick off concert weekend at Peterson Park By DAWN SCHABBING Features Writer

Four brothers who grew up without television turned their energy toward music and eventually formed the Christian rock band, Remedy Drive. Remedy Drive will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday on the Main Stage in Peterson Park. This is a free concert. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating. Donations will be received to offset the cost of the evening’s event. The band will open with Mattoon’s Brad Brown and the Central Community Church Praise Band. The five band members will perform a blend of contemporary and original worship songs, Brown said. WBGL Radio is a major supporter of the Christian night and will emcee the event. Remedy Drive band members David, Paul, Phillip and Daniel Zach first formed the band The Aslan Band in 1998, but later changed the name to Remedy and finally, Remedy Drive. The group comes to Bagelfest 2010 originally from Lincoln, Neb., with six recorded albums. It recently signed with Word Records. According to the biography at its website, the brothers’ group is driven by an “innate desire to engage audiences with a dynamic rock show that combines the raw energy of scrappy Indie rock with the colorful artistic panache of the Blue Man Group.” The Remedy Drive members include David on vocals, keys and guitar; Paul on vocals and guitars; Phillip on vocals and bass; and Daniel on the drums. “We offer people a nonexpense-spared rock show,” said Phillip Zach. Remedy Drive has hits such as “Daylight,” “Stand Up,” “All Along,” “Hope” and “Something Made to Last.” The band often uses everyday activities and observations to find inspiration for their lyrics and songs.

“I want our listeners to be involved with everything we do in Remedy Drive, and our music should reflect real life,” said Daniel Zach. Brother David Zach added, “We’re all getting sold this lie that the stuff we own can make you happy and validate who you are. We want to sing about something permanent, something real that’ll never burn out or fade away. Ultimately, we want to give our listeners hope.” Remedy Drive said its influences in the music industry include Muse, The Bravery, U2 and Switchfoot.

Brown, who is the associate pastor/music minister at Central Community Church, helped spearhead the Christian music night for this year’s Bagelfest, and said he believes it is important for area churches to endorse the event. “I think it is a great kickoff concert for the whole weekend,” he said. Learn more about Remedy Drive at www.remedydrive. com.

Neoga-based Decade Late plays a wide variety of music designed to get the crowd dancing.

Come and take a tour by calling us at 234-6401.

Decade Late to perform Saturday at beer tent By ROB STROUD Staff Writer

The band Decade Late plans to get the crowd dancing and having a good time during its show from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bagelfest beer tent. “There is nothing better than doing an outdoor festival gig, especially when there is cold beverages on tap and plenty of people to share it with,” said guitar player Aaron Zumbahlen. The Neoga-based band also

includes Joe Burton, vocals; Ryan Spradlin, vocals; John Burton, bass/vocals; John Armallino, guitar; and Anthony Speagle, drums. Zumbahlen said the band focused on writing original songs when it formed in 2002 under the name Aster. He said they later switched to performing cover songs and changed the band’s name to Decade Late. “We play a wide variety of music, anything from KISS to Taylor Swift and from Michael Jackson to Eddie

Money, guaranteed to get the crowd dancing and having a good time,” Zumbahlen said. Everyone in Decade Late has their own preferred songs and artists, Zumbahlen said. They come up with different ideas and try them out during shows to see how the crowd reacts, he said. “If the dance floor goes from full to empty we toss the song and find something else. Being in a cover band is all about the fans. You have to play what they want, even if it’s not your personal favorite

song. We are pretty well open to all kinds of music,” Zumbahlen said. Zumbahlen said Decade Late’s main priority is to grow and become more in demand in the Central Illinois entertainment scene. He said they are “right where we wanted to be” when they formed the band eight years ago as a young group of music lovers.

X-Krush to rock beer tent on Friday By ROB STROUD Staff Writer

Sporting their signature mohawks, the band X-Krush is scheduled to rock the Bagelfest beer tent from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Friday at Peterson Park. However, guitarist Jon Clarkson of Mattoon said the Champaign-based band is also known for mixing in songs from Johnny Cash, Katy Perry and more artists from other genres during XKrush concerts. “Just because you have a mohawk does not mean you are limited to playing punk music only,” Clarkson said. “We are all about taking requests and whatever we have to do to entertain people.” The requests shouted out by the crowd toward the end of evening shows tend to be for Pantera and other louder music, Clarkson noted. Clarkson, who is the only X-Krush member without a mohawk, joined the band in 2006 after previously playing with the 1980s cover band Poprocks. Clarkson said the members of X-Krush, which formed 13 years ago, come from a pretty wide back-

The band recently incorporated the song “Uprising,” by Muse, into its set of music. Clarkson said doing this has involved a lot of practice sessions with keyboards and synthesizers. “It’s nice to do a new song and see how the song is received after you put a lot of effort into it,” Clarkson said. Saturday’s show will mark the third performance at the

Bagelfest beer tent by XKrush. Clarkson said Bagelfest and other festivals provide a welcome change of venue for the band each summer. “After playing in clubs all winter, it’s nice to get outside in the open air,” Clarkson said.
