Lake Land College reaches 20,000 students ment, Lake Land continues to grow because of the many avenues of courses and programs offered that allow a diverse group of students to achieve their goals. Of the students enrolled in college programs, 10,085 were enrolled in specific courses or short-term training or, in other words, not currently pursuing a traditional college degree or certificate. Many of these courses and programs are offered off-campus, on-site at business and industry, extension centers and in high schools. "This flexible, often customized, curriculum has been a strong growth area for the college as it seeks to continuously meet the needs of individual students and education and business partners throughout the community,"
Mattoon Large 2 Bedroom, 1 Bath Duplexes, Low Utilities, Close to Schools
said Tina Stovall, vice president for student services. "It also allows Lake Land to continue our dedication to small classes and personalized services in our classes." Of the 9,918 students enrolled in traditional degree and certificate programs, 2,752 were preparing to transfer to a four-
area, the most popular majors were nursing, early childhood education and criminal justice.
The Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center is the center of LLC's campus. It is now a center for the college's green efforts! The renovation project, started in the fall of 2009, is a part of the college's ongoing "Envision. Educate. Engage for a sustainable future" initiative. The nearly four decade old building is now "green," by being on the expanding list of buildings connected to the campus's geothermal loop. The renovation made the space much more energy efficient, but also more student friendly. "The LRC renovations brought our college new innovative, technology-supported learning spaces for our students," said Tina Stovall, vice president for student services. "Students have been involved in the planning process and we have worked to incorporate all that they asked to see in a Owner: Tim Paap

Questions to Consider Before Pursuing an Advanced Degree Pursuing an advanced degree has long been considered a good career move. While the decision often depends on an individual's field of work, most employers are impressed by applicants with advanced degrees. In the current economic climate, however, the value of advanced degrees has become a point of contention. With so many people unemployed, one argument goes that an advanced degree can make a given applicant stand out from the rest. On the other hand, companies with limited budgets may look at applicants with advanced degrees as luxuries they cannot afford. Though both sides of that debate make valid points, in the end it's up to the individual to decide if pursuing an advanced degree is worth it, and whether or not it will help or hinder his or her ability to find new work or advance with a current employer. When making that decision, individuals should ask themselves the following questions to make the best choice possible. Who Is Footing the Bill? Most people are aware of how

expensive an undergraduate degree can be. But those who are just now considering an advanced degree may feel some sticker shock when researching programs. According to the Finaid.org, a Web site devoted to providing student financial aid information, graduate students accumulate an additional $30,000 to $120,000 in debt to their pre-existing debts from undergraduate studies. The median additional debt for a Master's degree is $25,000, while doctoral students can expect to accrue an additional $52,000 in debt. With such heavy financial stakes, it's important for individuals consider who will be footing the bill for their advanced degree. Some employers offer tuition reimbursement, but such offerings are usually capped. Employees can choose a course here or there to fall below the maximum, but that typically means it will take significantly longer to complete a degree. Some graduate programs even mandate a graduate degree is completed in a certain amount

Lake Land College Non-traditional student makes life changes at LLC students receive 'Almost Freebies'
Three years ago, Barb Beliz realized she needed to make a change in her life. “I had worked in a factory for 13 years and I wasn’t going anywhere. I wanted more for my life and for my family,” Beliz said. “I hated the way I felt when I came home. I made good money, but money is nothing to me. I want something that adds quality to my life.” Beliz and her family went through some transitions, but she kept her goal in mind. She found herself facing the decision to enroll in college as a single mother of two. “I just did it. I didn’t give myself a chance to think about it,” Beliz said. “ I filled out the intent to enroll and the financial aid papers. I had been thinking about it for two years , so I didn’t give myself a chance to back out.” “I want a career. I want to do something with my life. I didn’t just want a job. I had always wanted to go back to Lake Land, I just didn’t know what I wanted to
Barb Beliz study,” said Belize who attended LLC as a teen. This time around she found herself drawn to the healthcare
field. “My ultimate goal is to work in the cancer center.” Holding on to that goal has been tough, Beliz admits. “It’s so much harder than I ever thought it would be” to be enrolled in college and be a single mom. But, she has the support of her mother, who did the same thing 20 years ago. And, just as her mother found there are many people doing the same thing at Lake Land. “At first I thought I would be the oldest one in my class, but there are quite a few people my own age and even older.” Shortly after she started classes, she applied for the Federal Work Study program, which is a form of financial aid in which a student works on campus. She is enjoying her new position in the Communications & Creative Services Office. “Working on campus in between classes is so much better than working at night,” Beliz said. “I can see my children now and have enough time to study.”

LLC campus beta site EIU School of Continuing Education offers three online degrees for state-of-the-art wind turbine For the past five years, Lake Land College has been making a name for itself within the arena of green technology. The college's initiative called "Envision. Educate. Engage. for a sustainable future" utilizes a holistic approach of geothermal, solar panels, daylight harvesting, thin client technology and energy efficient lighting has generated $300,000 in energy savings in one year. After a lot of forethought and planning, Lake Land and Tempest Wind Energy based in Chicago have committed to a partnership to create a 100 K watt wind turbine. As part of the deal, the company is working with the college to create a unique turbine that is suited to the college's needs in order to maximize efficiency. As it develops further generations of the blades, the company will install them on campus free of charge. This will generate more electricity for the college as well as provide a living laboratory/experiment for our students to evaluate the performance of the new blades. "To see the resumes of the experts at Tempest, who are constructing the wind turbine, is impressive. These guys have traveled all over the world and are bringing that experience to LLC," said Blake Leitch, Mattoon, LLC student trustee. "And, it will help the college save money, which will mean more savings for students as well."
The construction of the wind turbines were propelled through grants from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Community Based Job Training Grant. "We would like to thank Governor Pat Quinn and the DCEO for investing and believing in our sustainability project. Receiving the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants are essential to our vision of creating one of the nation’s largest geothermal diversification loops, generating energy through wind and leading a holistic approach to energy reduction and generation,” Lake Land College President Scott Lensink said. The college has one 750 watt educational turbine on campus. The long-term goal is the energy generation from the wind turbines will contribute to the overall sustainability plan of going off the grid.

The long-term goal is the energy generation from the wind turbines will contribute to the overall sustainability plan of going off the grid.

of time, which might make it impossible for employees to fund their graduate degrees through a tuition reimbursement program with a cap on how much will be reimbursed. Individuals without substantial cash resources set aside for an advanced degree or those with an aversion to adding significant debt might determine that an advanced degree is not worth it. Is It Worth It? An advanced degree does not pay off in every field. Data collected by the United States Census Bureau in 1996 revealed that someone with a master's degree in liberal arts earned just $5 more per month than someone with a bachelor's degree in the same field. Social sciences master's degrees also did not fare too well, earning less than the average bachelor's degree in the same field. So while conventional wisdom suggests an advanced degree is always worth it, that's clearly not the case with certain degrees and fields of work. Consider the price versus the payoff when determining the viability of pursuing an advanced or professional degree. While medical students often borrow upwards of $100,000 for their degrees, USCB data showed that's clearly worth it, as the payoff for doing so is nearly $1 million. If the payoff is so high compared to the price, chances are it's worth it. If not, that's a decision only the individual can make. Is This Really What You Want? The high rate of unemploy-
ment has naturally led many people back to the classroom. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics published a graph in 2008 that illustrated a good correlation between unemployment rates and fluctuation in the number of graduate school enrollees. That's not surprising, as many people use unemployment as a motivator to pursuing an advanced degree or view that advanced degree as a tool that will keep them from being laid off in the future. However, the decision should not be reached hastily, particularly by those who are unemployed. As noted above, graduate school is a major financial commitment, one that should only be made if it's truly what an individual wants and not just an attempt to avoid returning to the unemployment office down the road.
