Understanding the Community


संघर्ष Can the light always lead you to places, you always want to be at? Places you always need to be at, and what if they are different? To some of us, that place is confided in a human form or materialistic aspirations but for some, it may be extended to an art form or occupation. This struggle of an artist can be put together as;

“My light is my will to go beyond boundaries, My place is my commitment to my work and I am explicitly torn between where I want to be and where I need to be.

The craft and its value for an artist seem all celebratory, warm, and always welcoming. Peeping right through their door, you hear a voice; “જરાક અંદર આવી ને તો બેસો”. This is where the curiosity increases and you want to find out that what is it that holds aall of these so perfectly. This dedication and commitment to their art is something rare and unusual. For all the people residing here, their nature of adaptability towards circumstances, life, and all in between are difficult to be unnoticed. But, wait is there anything beyond that? Yes, it’s the Struggle…

The Struggle of choosing between their want and need. This is what they have been doing for years now; struggling to fulfil their basic needs and continue to evolve their art or occupation. This Journey of survival is what goes unnoticed by most of us. Survival of themselves and their art in these difficult times – where their basic needs are difficult to get fulfilled. But, just like a beam of light waiting at the end of the tunnel, these people continue to work with the hope that there's a better tomorrow where people like me and you will strive a little bit to make a notable difference for them.

Community Analysis Chitara Family Cluster The Chitara family has been practicing the art of Mata Ni Pachedi for 7 generations, passing on the art form as a legacy. Their workshop is based in Vasna in Ahmedabad, where they work together and collaborate with institutions like NID, CEPT or the government for projects such as teaching or exhibiting their craft. Kirit Chitara is currently the youngest practicing painter of the Chitara family. Only 7 families are left who practice the art and searching for odd jobs to fulfill their family needs.

Raw materials required in the Making of mata-ni-pachedi For deciding the space requirements

FABRIC 1. The traditional products are all printed on gray cotton fabric, which is commonly known as ‘mader path’ in Gujarat. 2. Usually a coarser count fabric is used for the traditional products, the count carries on from 28s-32s. 3.For initial treatment of the fabric, it is treated in ‘Beda powder’.

RAW MATERIAL FOR BLACK COLOR 1.

After the treatment of the fabric, drawings are painted or printed with black color which is prepared of natural materials. The materials used for black are-

2. Jaggery (gud); Iron dust (loha); Tamarind powder (kachuka powder); Castor oil (Arindya) tel; Copper Sulphate(Hirakasi)

MORDANT 1. Alum solution is used as a fixative. 2. Tamarind powder is used as the gum. 3. Other mordants being used are Potassium, Tin Chloride, Copper Sulphate etc. DYESTUFF 1. Traditional maroon color extracted from Alizarin is still used. 2. The artisans of Vasna cluster have learnt dyeing with other natural materials as well. 3. Dyestuff (for traditional maroon color)
