She has developed great relationships with her students and takes the time to teach her students and share valuable life lessons, tips and experiences she has encountered throughout her career. “Elaine’s knowledge has been extremely valuable to my learning, not only through her stories, but also her approach in teaching and leadership,” said Bridget Kieckhoefer, nominator and 2016 UWEC HCAD graduate. “As much as she enjoys teaching and sharing her experiences, she also allows me to take on tasks and challenges similar to what an administrator does so that I can gain understanding in all different areas of the position.” In addition to mentoring students, Dyer encourages innovation and creativity in all aspects of healthcare. “Elaine is continuously looking for ways to improve different areas of healthcare in

Wellness: Keeping Your Home Safe Preventing falls in the home is vital Kari Knox, Wellness Coordinator

As we hear over and over, falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors. In fact, more than half of all injuries among seniors are a result of falls and most of those occur in the home or surrounding area. The bad news is that a fall can result in a serious injury such as a hip fracture, as well as a loss of independence. The good news is that falls can be prevented and there are steps seniors can take to make sure they stay safe and self-sufficient at home. Fall prevention starts with knowledge. As the body ages, normal changes occur, such as the reduction of vision, hearing and sense of touch, which can

balance, and flexibility and keep muscles toned.

increase the risk of falls. Other risk factors include reduced balance, physical fitness, sideeffects from medications and unsafe conditions around the home. There are many ways to reduce fall risk; for example, keeping physically fit can prevent a decline in mobility, strength,

People who cannot hear or see properly are at a greater risk of falling. Check hearing and vision regularly and wear appropriate glasses and hearing aids. Be aware of the side-effects of medications. Those that cause dizziness or weakness can affect balance and perception. Some of the greatest risk factors are unsafe conditions around the home, especially in the kitchen, bathroom and on stairways. Here are a few tips to help “fall proof ” a home: • Remove throw rugs or scatter mats; the edges are hazards. Another option: secure them to the floor or ensure they have non-skid backing to keep them from slipping • Have handrails installed on the stairs • Ensure stairways are well lit and free of clutter • Keep walkways free of telephone and electrical cords and other clutter • Install grab bar(s) and non-slip surfaces to make the bathtub or shower less slippery • Use a bath seat, if standing up in a shower is difficult see “Wellness” page 4

July 3rd Fireworks Fest Food, fun and festivities by the lake

Liz Brach, Donor Stewardship Coordinator The 2016 July 3rd Fireworks Fest brought entertainment, food and fun to the Rubenstein Pavilion as more than 220 community members, residents and family members gathered to celebrate Independence Day. The Easy Days Quartet strolled the floor as they sang and Pinwheel the Clown entertained the children with face painting and balloon animals. The overall success of the annual July 3rd Fireworks Fest enables our intergenerational programming, through the Martin F. Stein Fund and the Gene and Ruth Posner Foundation, to grow and transform the live of our residents and community children. We are proud to bring the wisdom and experience of our older adults together with the energy and enthusiasm of our children. Our many sponsors helped to make this an unforgettable evening, and we thank them for supporting this event. For information on future sponsorship opportunities, contact Liz Brach at 414.721.9255. n

Year award. The most rewarding part is seeing all of the students wanting to get into this occupation even though the rules and regulations seem to be tightening on a daily basis. It was truly heartwarming and I am genuinely honored. Dyer received her BSN from Mt. Senario College in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. She earned her Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Cardinal Stritch University. The award was presented at the Annual CHAASE Banquet at UW-Eau Claire on Thursday, April 28, 2016. n

Intergenerational Programming Summer Update See what our residents and students have been up to

Julie Shlensky, Posner Chair for Intergenerational Programming Here’s an update on all the wonderful intergenerational activities our residents have been enjoying this summer. • Senior friends from the Jewish Home and Care Center attended graduation and a dinner in honor of their little friends at Mequon Jewish Preschool on June 1st. • 6th and 7th grade girls from Yeshiva Elementary School visited participants at the Adult Day Center. The students helped make purple jewelry that was sold at a sale held to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. • Teens from area high schools have been trained as Memory Care Assistants for the Memory Care Center at Sarah Chudnow Community. The teens get to know the residents by playing games and doing art activities with them. They then create

t

a memory board for each resident to keep in her room to share her life story with others. • Fifty campers from B’nai B’rith Beber Camp in Mukwonago took a walk to the lakefront with residents from the Jewish Home and Care Center • Residents at Sarah Chudnow Community and 60 campers from the JCC Gesher Camp were entertained with singing and dancing by the Israel Scouts Friendship Caravan on July 11.
