Meet the Committee: Medical Ethics Committee A resource to residents and family members Liz Brach, Donor Stewardship Coordinator Founding Date: June 6, 2007 Mission: The Medical Ethics Committee is a multidisciplinary committee that provides educational programming, policy review and case consultation in order to assist Residents, families and caregivers to address ethical issues that may arise in Resident Care. What exactly is the Medical Ethics Committee and what do they do? The Medical Ethics Committee is comprised of interdisciplinary staff and community volunteers who have been involved in the medical field. “The people on this committee have expertise from varied backgrounds, and it truly makes for some rich and interesting conversation,” said Robyn Shapiro, Committee Chair. “Committee members are always very interested in the subject matter and enjoy giving their input.” Typical meetings of the committee consist of case study review, education on the facility and medical news, policy development, policy review and policy consultation. One of the current policies the committee reviewed is development of new rules regarding CPR. The State of Wisconsin Department

of Health Services had issued potentially unclear directives on when CPR should administered, and the committee met to discuss hypothetical cases that were not initially contemplated by the rule, to ensure proper implementation of the directive, and to help re-write internal policies and procedures. Another important worldwide issue taken into consideration is the topic of sexuality among residents who may not have decision-making or cognitive abilities: what constitutes consent; what is staff involvement in these situations? What should our actions be in accordance with our stated policies, procedures and intentions?” Michael Sattell, President/CEO says, “The Medical Ethics Committee serves to strengthen the ethical decision-making ability of the Jewish Home and Care Center, Chai Point Senior Living, and Sarah Chudnow Communities’ staff and provides direction for ongoing policies and procedures in accordance with our overall mission of providing the best senior care based on Jewish faith and values. The committee can offer a safe and confidential deliberation for families and residents that may seek a resolution of a difficult ethical dilemma.” see “Medical Ethics,” page 4

Our Hidden Gems: Meet David Weber David has been involved with JHCC for about ten years Beth Draper, Volunteer Coordinator

This is the second in an on-going series of articles highlighting some of the hidden gems in our treasure chest of people who give their time to our organization. David Weber is a member of the Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation board of directors, serving on both its investment and grant committees. His involvement began in 2007 when his mother became a resident of the Jewish Home. Nita Corré, who was the president of the Jewish Home and Care Center at the time, invited him to join the Foundation Board of Directors. David understood the importance of supporting the Foundation for the Jewish Home where his mother still resides. “The investment committee has been the primary focus of my work with the Foundation,” he said. This committee works to monitor investments and draft spending policies to insure that the organization is spending and investing wisely. “I have also just begun to work on the grant committee. I find my involvement very interesting and fulfilling.” David enjoys contributing as much as he can to the organization; he understands that volunteering in this way is a significant investment of time but says that “if you really want to volunteer you can always make the time. It means choosing your priorities.”

David works as an attorney at Mawicke & Goisman, S.C., in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration, and business matters. He and his wife, Sally, have one son, Ben, who lives in New York City.

Why does he serve on the Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation Board? “I get the satisfaction of contributing to an organization that I have tremendous respect for. The Foundation and Jewish Home leadership, staff, and volunteers are an incredibly dedicated group and I am happy to be able to provide whatever support I can. The Jewish Home and the Foundation provide important services and support for many seniors in our community.” Do you know another “hidden gem” within our community? Meet the Fund: Elizabeth Laskin Educational Fund The Laskin Fund was founded to benefit both residents and staff Liz Brach, Donor Stewardsihp Coordinator Founding Year: 2002 Background Story: The Elizabeth Laskin Educational Fund was set up in the Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation by the family of Elizabeth Laskin. Mrs. Laskin was a resident of the Jewish Home and Care Center. Her family was very appreciative of the care she received, so much so that they donated funds to be used on educational programming for future staff. How it impacts resident care: The Elizabeth Laskin Educational Fund supports onsite continuing education for staff and community in the areas of dementia and memory loss, leading to better overall care and quality of life for residents. On June 1, Nechama Solomon, BSc, MPH, and clinical nutritionist visiting from Israel, educated staff members about her RiMoN Program, an interdisciplinary approach to improving memory care for residents of long-term care facilities. R stands for ‘releasing emotions through EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique.’ M stands for ‘Movement to Music.’ And N stands for ‘nutrition for older adults with dementia.’

Medical Ethics

Stella Plous Award

continued from page 1

Congratulations to Princess Ferguson on receiving the 2016 Stella Plous Award for CNA of the Year at the Jewish Home and Care Center.

How can the committee help residents and families? The Medical Ethics Committee is a resource to residents and family members and is available to provide consultation in individual cases where needed. Says Robyn Shapiro, “The Medical Ethics Committee is concerned with quality of life and autonomy of Residents. The committee revises and develops policies to better the care for Residents, and provides a forum for discussion. We are a resource for our residents, and we are available to them when they need us. I love being involved on the Medical Ethics committee. The committee is an excellent illustration of the sensitivity, care, and commitment that the Jewish Home and Care Center demonstrates towards the adherence to high ethical standards. To me, this is what the Jewish Home stands for.”

The Stella Plous Caring Award was made possible by a bequest to the Jewish Home and Care Center from Stella Plous. The fund was set up to award a Certified Nursing Assistant who has been employed by JHCC for at least one year, and who demonstrates the qualities of caring, compassion and dedication that marked the life of Stella Plous. u
