Summer is here! With Memorial Day in the books for 2016 I am excited for the next few months here at The Alpine. The pool is in full swing, the golf course is in great shape, and the social calendar is full for the summer. First, I would like to extend a warm Alpine welcome to our new Executive Chef, Elio Scanu! Chef Elio comes to The Alpine via Salt Lake City, Utah. He has an extensive culinary background in both banquet and a la carte dining that he brings with him. In 2013, Chef Elio conceptualized and opened an Italian restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City called Vivace which was named Best New Restaurant in Utah by Salt Lake Magazine. Chef Elio has experience from all over the world. He has been a part of restaurants in Venezuela, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Utah to go along with training that he received in Italy, Switzerland and New York. We are excited to have him on the team so please extend him a warm Alpine welcome as he joins our family! There is a lot going on at the Club in July and August so mark your calendars accordingly. After the Fourth of July BBQ, we have the famous Italian Festa followed by a Lobster Night, Cigar Dinner and the Summer SoirÊe. Also on the calendar are the always popular Dinner for Two and Sunday Chicken Dinner so there should be something for everyone in the family to enjoy in the near future! We encourage you to check in with us while you enjoy a cocktail by the pool, share a photo of your veal chop for dinner, or tell your friends about your Club. Lastly, I want to close this month with one of my favorite summer cocktails and of course a cigar to pair with it. I have always been a fan of bitter flavors and the Negroni is one of my favorite drinks of that variety. I enjoy the wood undertones that the Gin brings out of the Campari. The Negroni pairs nicely with the Davidoff Escurio Corona Gorda and the hints of oak that shine through in this cigar. This is an Olympic year so I thought it was fitting to choose the newest Davidoff cigar that was inspired by the city hosting this year’s competition, Rio, Brazil. A Fond Farewell Dear Members, I write this letter to the entire Alpine Country Club family. After a large amount of thought, I have decided to leave the position of Food and Beverage Manager, and after making the hardest decision I have ever had to make, I believe this decision will allow me to grow and further my career. I started my journey at Alpine 11 years ago as a 15 year old busboy by the pool. It was my first and only job up to this point. I was fortunate enough to be asked to transition into the dining room at the end of that season. Shortly after, I made the jump over to the banquet team where I spent the next 8 years. I worked my way from Banquet Server to Banquet Captain to Banquet Manager. I am also thankful that I was a part of Alpine’s 50th Anniversary, it was a weekend full of rich history and traditions. I was able to work with some of the greatest professionals in the business and with that team we were able to make Alpine the Best Wedding Venue in the state 3 years in a row. In 2014 Alpine decided to hire Troon Golf which presented me with an opportunity of a lifetime. I would like to sincerely thank The Alpine Board of Directors and the Corporate Team from Troon, Shannan Metcalf and Rob DeMore. Because of these first class individuals I was promoted to Food and Beverage Manager. This allowed me to be the face of the F&B team for the past 2 seasons and I was truly blessed to work for and with some of the greatest individuals one could ever ask to be around. Alpine’s success will always be built on one of its greatest assets, the employees. A facility this large has a lot of moving parts, so communication and teamwork are a necessity. I will always be thankful for having the privilege to work with a team of dedicated, hardworking individuals. Jeff Beier, Nic Haun, Liane McDonnell, Amanda Greenwood, Jarad Fuoco, Stephanie Sauro, Douglas Foss, Kelly McCusker, Scott Gabrielson, Ed Kirby, Brian Schaffer, Josh Hey, Bob Clarke, Edgar Guzman and our three newest additions Tricia Mallozzi, Megan Kenney and Jessica Sherman. Thank you all for your support, without it I would not have become the manager I am today. Lastly, I would like to thank the Ala Carte, Banquet and Kitchen teams because without you we would have not been able to achieve all the success we have had over the years. When I was young my family always told me “treat everyone with respect and honesty and you will build relationships that will last a lifetime”. I feel I have achieved that here at Alpine with the membership and the staff and for that I will always be thankful. I have received tremendous amounts of support and thanks from everyone, and those kind words mean everything to me. My 11 year journey at Alpine has come to an end but the Club will always be part of my life. The membership and staff will always be family, and The Alpine will always be called home. Enjoy a Healthy L The Importance of Screenings Terrance Healey, M.D. Greater than 220,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year and approximately 160,000 people will die from the disease. Lung cancer accounts for more deaths per year than breast, colon, prostate cancers and lymphoma COMBINED! The majority of lung cancers occur in current or former smokers. Smoking cessation remains the best fight against lung cancer however despite the resources devoted to this effort the mortality from lung cancer has not changed. In 2011, highly publicized results from the National Lung Screening Trial indicate that lung cancer screenings can detect lung cancers with computed tomography (CT) early enough to reduce lung cancer death rates by about 20%. Chest X-rays CANNOT routinely detect early stage lung cancer! The low dose radiation technology behind CT scans is sufficiently sensitive to detect small tumors. As of 2015 this test is covered by all insurance plans including Medicare. CT

lung cancer screening is the first and only cost-effective test proven to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths. Who is eligible for lung cancer screening with low dose CT scan?

1. Age 55-80 2. Current smoker or former smoker who quit within the past 15 years

3. At least 30 pack-years smoking history

(1 pack per day for 30-years, 2 packs per day for 15 years, etc.)

Nutritious and Delicious! By Liane McDonnell

Changing your eating patterns can be an amazing and effective way to lose weight. Not only will you lose weight, but you will feel very different! Clean eating gives your body natural energy, so you can wake up easier and feel great throughout the day. Every aspect of your body is affected by both what you eat and how you eat. Everything from your attitude to your sleep quality and from your brain’s recall to your hair and nails will be improved. The first step is training your stomach! Plan to eat 5 times per day, about 2-3 hours apart – breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. Did I just tell you to eat MORE? Yes! Eating more often will train your metabolism and your stomach to keep up with your new lifestyle. The key is to eat the right amount of each type of food group. So how do you know what the right amount of food is? And the right type of each food? Well, we can start with the foods we know are NOT part of this clean eating plan: processed foods, added sugar, salt and dairy. So what is left? All the great food that you have been missing out on! Proteins are your most important aspect of eating, and should be consumed multiple times throughout the day rather than a large portion all at once. This could be grilled chicken, grilled steak, shrimp, tuna or even scrambled eggs! Your next groups are fruits and vegetables, which are surprisingly filling when you have the right portion size. Carbs should be limited to one or two per day, and should be whole wheat only.

Here is a typical day for me. Keep in mind that this exact menu may not work for everyone, but it is an excellent guide to see the amounts your body needs. Breakfast – Protein and Carb: 2 large eggs (scrambled), 1/4 cup old-fashioned steel-cut oatmeal (not the packaged stuff!) I add cinnamon to it and a pinch of ginger for flavor. Morning Snack – Fruit and Protein: fruit (an amount the size of a tennis ball, typically strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew or pineapple), and a vegan protein shake Lunch – Protein and Vegetable: 4-5 oz of chicken with a raw vegetable portion (an amount the size of a tennis ball, usually cucumbers and tomatoes), topped with my own dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and lemon juice Afternoon Snack – Fruit and Nut: fruit (typically an apple) and 12 almonds Dinner – Protein and Vegetable: 4-5 oz of chicken (or steak or fish!) with a cooked vegetable portion (use frozen, never canned veggies!). I cook the vegetables in olive oil with red pepper flakes and other herbs and spices, but no salt! You can add whole wheat pasta to your dinner, but only an amount the size of ½ your fist. Use olive oil for your pasta, and no cheese! The other extremely important part of this is your water intake! You want to drink half of your weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs, you want to drink 75 oz of water each day. Continued on Page 7

Nutritious and Delicious! continued... If this seems overwhelming, break it down to mini goals throughout the day. I break my water intake into thirds: the first third needs to be finished before I leave for work in the morning, the second third needs to be finished before my afternoon snack, and the final third during and after dinner. If you are thinking that this sounds complicated, it’s not. Put your meals together the night before, and you will be set for each day. I have done this program for over a year, and absolutely love it! I love it so much that I want to share this amazing

knowledge with all of you. It takes a bit of planning ahead to start, but once you start this program it will become second nature. The first two weeks are the toughest, but after that your body will be used to your new lifestyle. The great thing about this is that you can choose what you eat. It is not a set menu. Just try this program for two weeks, and you will be so happy you did! You will never want to go back to your old ways! You will lose weight and you will feel great! If you really want to speed up the weight loss, pair this program with 30 minutes of exercise each day and prepare to be amazed!

We are a couple of months into our season and I want to start by congratulating our Champions thus far. Justin St. Andre and his guest partner Jeff Quinlan in the Founders’ Invitational, Amanda Ruggieri in The Memorial, Ken Travelyn in The President’s Cup and both Bob Cosentino and Nick Moceri in The Tradition. We have a lot more tournaments and events coming up, so make sure you sign up before it’s too late! Here are some of the upcoming events for July and August.

Summer is in full swing both weather-wise and with golf functions. July & August bring the Club Championship, the Italian Festa and the Member-Guest Fourball Tournament. By the beginning of July most, if not all, aerification, topdressing and more disruptive cultural practices are done and we are working to keep the turf healthy and growing. Major pests this time of year are turf fungal diseases, white grubs which start emerging early August and also the stresses of high temperature and humidity. We have spent most of late spring and early summer working on bunkers and repairing damaged areas from last fall. Progress was slow due to colder than normal spring temperatures but we look to have the course more playable than when we started the year.

The biggest challenge facing the turf is keeping it cooled with light applications of water, allowing plant respiration to continue. While summer is a great time for people to be outdoors enjoying all the club has to offer, this is normally our two toughest months for growing grass.

Please remember to do your part to help maintain the golf course: • Fix ballmarks and divots • Rake your bunker • Be cognizant of where and how you drive your golf cart so as not to further beat up the turf

Ingredients: 3 cups Flour 1 tsp Salt 1 tsp Baking Soda 1 tsp Baking Powder 3 tsp Cinnamon 3 Large Eggs 1 cup Vegetable Oil 2 ¼ cups Sugar 3 tsp Vanilla 2 cups Grated Zucchini 1 cup Chopped Walnuts

Directions: Sift the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon in a bowl. Beat the eggs, oil, sugar and vanilla in another bowl. Add the sifted mixture to the creamed mixture. Stir in zucchini and walnuts. Bake 50 minutes at 325 degrees. Allow bread to cool, then slice and enjoy!

Social Spotlight Jessica Sherman, Wedding & Event Sales Manager Jessica Sherman is the new Wedding and Event Sales Manager at Alpine Country Club. Jessica graduated from Roger Williams University in 2008 with a Bachelors Degree in Marketing and Public Relations. Throughout college she worked as an event manager at Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, RI. Upon graduation Jessica gained experience working in corporate sales and hospitality. Most recently Jessica worked as the Director of Sales and Marketing at Blue Hill Country Club. Jessica grew up in Massachusetts but is a Rhode Island girl at heart, and is thrilled to be back in her favorite state. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with friends, family and her puppy named Lucy. She enjoys spending her days off at the beach or watching the Patriots! She is eager to get to know the staff and members in the upcoming weeks.
