The Graduation Project The Gallery of Indigenous History and Culture (GIHC), Goat Island
Brief: It is proposed that Goat Island to undergo a major facilities upgrade to promote as a cultural space and tourism destination. The Galleries are located in the Magazine Precinct, Goat Island, Sydney Harbour. Despite the rich archaeological discoveries and histories, there is a scarcity of indigenous traces. The study of Indigenous history since the white settlement resonates with the painful experiences inflicted on the culture and the life of indigenous peoples and their sense of identity. The design proposal is driven by the designer’s emotional response to the journey of continuous struggle to protect the aboriginal peoples’ indigeneity throughout Australian history. This project celebrates the perseverance and survival of the culture. The GIHC aims to increase native cultural awareness and encourage diversity and harmony. Five major buildings of the Magazine Precinct are proposed to be dedicated as the places of storytelling. The stories are about the historical events as well as the cultural and spiritual aspects of the indigenous peoples. Each building tells the story of the lives of indigenous people in five stages to demonstrate the emotions and empathy with the events. The spaces are the manifestation of abstract and symbolic expressions offering the visitors to experience by “being in the moment”.

The five buildings in the Magazine precinct follow the sequence of historical events since white settlement. They are a vital integration of the site usage and learning experience which would contribute to promoting Australian tourism and indigenous cultural awareness.
The study of the historic events having occurred between the time of white settlement and the present time, showcases multiple aspects of the cultural and social relationships we have with the indigenous people today. Lack of understanding and respect for each other’s cultural values became the crucial point of conflict that created many painful experiences and deaths for all involved in later years. The way to live as one with nature that indigenous people believed was ignored and invaded.

Concept ModelsAs History Interpreted
This led to a prolonged battle for survival of the indigenous culture and became a significant influence on our perceived Australian cultural identity. This struggle continues today on a daily basis and is reflected in our contemporary society.
The diagrams and models show the historical events interpreted into emotional responses. These were arranged in a sequence symbolising the past and the present relationship of Australia for this issue and the future direction the designer hopes the country will go. Then the sequence is then divided into five narrative segments and inserted into each building to tell the story of strength and perseverance in a story-telling format.
“We are enshrining today fundamental truths, the truth that aboriginal people are the first peoples of NSW, the truth of the spiritual, economic and cultural ties that bind aboriginal people to the land.”
Age of the endocast of a primitive hominid-like skull recovered in NSW 2005
Physical evidence of literature and permanent architecture were more valued and considered as the proof of civilization in the European countries. Therefore, lack thereof meant the land was available to be claimed which gave the white settlers sense of entitlement to the land.
In the last few decades, as a nation we have started to witness a positive and progressive cultural, social and political advancement focusing on reconciliation, acceptance and integration.

Ship Repair Shop
The oral/aural literature -information has always been the most impor tant form of communication of Australian indigenous people for many years . This has been playing a vital tool to connect between the groups and individuals of the past, present and future. Dance moves and singing during ceremonies and stor y telling is enriched with indigenous iconography illustrated on natural resources and as body paintings . The exchange of stories and messages are sophisticated and complex yet delivered ef for tlessly between the communicators of deep cultural understanding.
The Ship Repair Shop provides the first contact of arrival. It houses open gallery spaces, reception area, retail store and cafeteria area. The main structure is assembled with an Australian hardwood such as Spotted Gum, western red cedar and manna gum for construction and finished and the floor finish is black terrazzo with mirror pieces.
Open Cafe Area The patrons are encouraged to sit and enjoy refreshments and the indigenous art at the same time.

The symbol of water well appear prominently in many of the indigenous drawings as water is an essential part of life. The indigenous people had an extensive ground water system which allowed them to survive on one of the world’s driest continent for thousands of years. A lot of old Australian road system adapted the ground water. This symbol is positioned as a central reference point connecting the lower, middle and the higher part of the building to provide a fluid path of travel.

Administration Building
According to the Dreamtime, the humans harmoniously coexisted with the spirits and the nature. White body paintings and pyrography on musical instruments are often seen during ceremonies. One of the most commonly found musical instrument “Digeridoos“ are painted in white to symbolise their spirituality and belief in the way of living.

Is an optical effect observed in an optical device (e.g. lens, mirror , etc) that occurs due to the increased refraction of light rays when they strike a lens or a mirror near its edge, in comparison with those that strike nearer the centre. It results in an imperfection of the produced image. It signifies an acknowledgement and acceptance of diversity.
Traditional method of marking a place of importance such as grave yard or ceremonial place. Ornaments are found on tools and equipments as well as on bodies of living people. The digeridoos are stained in white timber varnish and decorated by burning techniques (Pyrography).

The columns are positioned to create an atmosphere where one is to feel the chaos of being invaded of their space and lacking in sense of control. This space represents the early stage of colonial period, the beginning of cultural clash. The end of the columns are utilised as display unit with concealed light box.
Cooperage
Stolen of their land, children and mostly respect for their way of life resulted in fight to protect their way of life. The display units are arranged to simulate the uneasy paths that is full of obstacles to the survival of indigenous culture.
Colonial Magazine
This building represents the hope and opportunities that lie ahead with a positive outlook in the future. Amongst the various cultural and social issues, the Aboriginal culture plays a very important role of Australia’s national identity and must be preserved and nurtured.
Taylor Square Bike Hub
The bike hub is centrally located at the main intersection of three major bicycle routes. The City of Sydney proposed the project to promote cycling and help reduce 10% of traffic congestion by 2016. The central row of columns and two different floor levels allow the spaces to be naturally subdivided. Although the building is a significant heritage architecture with strong federation features, each spaces were deliberately treated as an individual as if to reflect on the wide range of bicycle designs. The idea comes from the dynamic and colourful culture of the suburb residents for their life style, backgrounds and atmosphere that changes significantly from day to night. The building offers facilities for cyclers and social places for everyone.
