Women’s tennis (4.0), softball (3.74), women’s track & field (3.71), volleyball (3.68) and women’s soccer (3.67) filled the top five GPAs over the spring term. The 3.23 GPA was

the Redhawks highest for any semester since 2014-15. In all, 68 student-athletes received their degrees, including 18 in the fall and 50 in the spring. Tutors are available for all student-athletes as needed. In addition, both attendance and academic progress is monitored through regular checks with faculty. A special course is required for all first time student-athletes at Southeast. The course, which offers three credit hours, is part of a comprehensive program developed to address study skills and life skills topics, and thus, enhance retention and academic success for studentathletes. Entering student-athletes are evaluated for academic

preparedness and assigned to appropriate categories. Student-athletes can also receive individualized academic programs which include meeting with a mentor bi-weekly to discuss academic progress. The Holcomb Success Center staff works to get athletes involved in campus and community projects, as well. This is done to provide a support structure and greater opportunity for academic success. rady Barke is in his fourth year as Southeast Missouri’s Director of Athletics. Barke served as the Interim Director of Athletics since July, 2015, before being named to the permanent position of Director of Athletics on June 7, 2016. During the 2018-19 season, the Redhawks finished fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, improving three spots from where they ranked the previous year. SEMO accumulated a total of 98.75 points in the overall scoring and was awarded 12.5 points for winning the softball OVC regular season and tournament titles. The Redhawks tacked on a combined 43 points between second-place finishes in women’s cross country, women’s outdoor track & field, football and men’s outdoor track & field. Academically, SEMO’s athletic teams were once again strong in the classroom.

12 2020 MEDIA GUIDE

A total of 229 individuals achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average during the 201819 academic year equating to 67.7 percent of the entire student-athlete population. Forty-five of those studentathletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs. The women’s tennis team led the athletics department with a 3.87 cumulative GPA and registered a perfect 4.0 in the spring semester. SEMO’s 3.23 spring GPA was the department’s highest in any semester over the last 10 years. In all, 68 student-athletes received degrees, including 18 in the fall and 50 in the spring. Additionally, the women’s cross country and volleyball programs earned NCAA Public Recognition awards based on their multiyear Academic Progress Rates for the fourth year in a row. The upcoming 2019-20 campaign marks SEMO’s second year with Under Armour. Barke reached a multi-year agreement with the Baltimore-based global leader

in performance footwear, apparel and equipment that made Under Armour the official outfitter of Southeast Missouri Athletics on July 1, 2018. As part of the multi-year agreement, Under Armour provides on-field and training gear for 15 sports. Additionally, Under Armour outfits members of the athletic department including coaches and staff. Most recently, renovations have been made to the nutrition area that serves as a fueling station for SEMO student-athletes at the Holcomb Success Center. Construction for a new hitting facility at Capaha Field is underway and scheduled to be completed by the start of the upcoming 2020 baseball season. During his first year in 201617, Barke introduced Andy Sawyers as the Redhawks head baseball coach and worked tirelessly on two major renovation projects. Nearly a month after Sawyers was hired, Southeast Missouri

State and the City of Cape Girardeau officially broke ground on Capaha Field. New synthetic turf, new fencing and a digital scoreboard in the outfield were added as part of the $1.8 million project that was completed before SEMO’s season-opener. On Feb. 3, 2017, SEMO formally dedicated Holcomb Success Center. To honor the long-time service and philanthropy of Dr. John and Judy Holcomb, the University named the facility the Holcomb Success Center located in the Student Recreation CenterSouth. Indoor turf, weights, equipment and lifting platforms were added as part of the renovation at a cost of $500,000. The facility now has more space and equipment to handle Southeast’s larger teams or multiple teams training at the same time. Barke helped secure the Holcomb’s gift, the largest single cash gift in SEMO Athletics history.

TENNIS Major improvements were also made to the second floor of the building where athletic academic services are housed. This space provides student-athletes with places to study and features a computer lab with 30 work terminals and rooms for group meetings. Staff members assist student-athletes with life skills development, academic advising and academic progress toward degree requirements and NCAA eligibility. Fundraising continues to increase under Barke’s leadership. The 2018-19 campaign marked the fifth consecutive year of growth for the Redhawks Club general fund. It is the highest level of giving to the Redhawks Club general fund since 2003-04. Barke also worked with donors to establish two new endowed scholarships for student-athletes and raised over $60,000 to support the

SEMO football program and summer school scholarships. More than $250,000 in pledges for the Redhawks Club unrestricted booster fund has been raised with Barke as Director of Athletics. Over $200,000 was raised in Sponsorship & Marketing contracts each of the last two years. The 2018-19 season was the fifth-consecutive year of Sponsorship and Marketing revenues. Barke has also worked hard to enhance Redhawks branding around the community. Redhawk banners, S-E! M-O! billboards, Welcome to Redhawk country and Your Redhawks yard signs are prominently displayed all over Cape Girardeau. Barke created the Redhawks Trivia Night & Auction, a sold out event that generated over $40,000 in net revenue its first year. In addition, he launched the Redhawks BRIDGE program which provides student-athletes with

#LETSSOAR both leadership and life skills experiences through interactive programming that will prepare them to be successful in life after athletics. Barke, senior associate to the president and secretary to the Board of Regents at Southeast, officially began as Director of Athletics on July 1, 2016. Barke served as Interim Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Student Support Services before being named the Senior Associate to the President and Secretary to the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents in 2013. He began his tenure at Southeast in 2008 as Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance & Eligibility. Barke previously served as a governance intern with the NCAA national headquarters in Indianapolis, and as a law clerk with the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Department of Athletics Compliance Office.

Barke has served as a member of the National Association of Athletics Compliance (NAAC), chaired the NAAC Education Committee, and was a member of the NAAC Board of Directors. He has facilitated the NCAA Regional Leadership Academy, and served on both the NCAA Sports Wagering Task Force and the Olympic Sports Liaison Committee. Barke has a juris doctorate degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law, an MBA from Southeast Missouri State University, and a bachelor of science degree in biology from Webster University. While a student at Webster, Barke was a member of both the basketball and golf teams and was inducted into the Webster Athletic Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Halley, are parents of three children, Mabrie, Jackson, and Kolbe.

SEASON PREVIEW

GOSOUTHEAST.COM

19

SEASON

A

fter a historic 2019 season that saw Southeast Missouri women’s tennis finish as semifinalists at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the 2020 Redhawks will look to build upon that success. The pieces are there as SEMO’s seven returners include five who heavily contributed to Southeast’s first OVC Championship match victory in 16 years. “When we beat Belmont last year in the tournament, I was most excited about the win because I knew five of the six starters would be back again next year,” head coach Mary Beth Gunn said of that experience. “It’s a huge advantage to have that many starters return for the next season because they know what it feels like to compete at this tournament, and they are hungry to get back there again and finish stronger than the previous year.” Those returners include senior Kseniya Zonova (Kharkiv, Ukraine), junior Maja Lundell (Stockholm, Sweden) along with sophomores Romana Tarajova (Dolný Kubín, Slovakia), Manuela Barriga (Bogotá, Colombia), Sneha Sinha (Germantown, Tennessee), Teona Velkoska (Prilep, Macedonia) and Grace Powderly (Cape Girardeau, Missouri). Southeast also added two freshmen in Vivian Lai (Taipei, Taiwan) and Lera Valeeva (Ekaterinburg, Russia). “We have a large sophomore class that is very close with one another,” Gunn said of the makeup of this squad. “Now that they have a year of experience, I am excited to see their growth this season. Kseniya has proven herself on the court; she has had an impressive career here and she showed up to preseason training ready to play. Our two freshmen are both very strong players and our leaders have done a great job teaching them what it means to be a Redhawk.”

20 2020 MEDIA GUIDE

Southeast registered a 12-10 record last season while posting a .500 mark during OVC play (4-4) in Gunn’s fourth season. Their goals for the 2020 campaign encompass their stability at the helm as well as on the court. “Now that our program has begun to see some continuity, we have been able to build our culture and belief in ourselves,” Gunn said. “We have a strong base of talent, experience, and pride in our program. These elements make us a formidable threat to other teams in the conference. Our main objective is to play each match with focus, intensity, and energy. We have the experience to handle the big moments which make us a contender for the OVC title this year. Our focus is on growth and how we can get just a little better each day so when it comes to conference play, we are ready for the challenge.” Besides two new freshmen, Gunn has also added graduate assistant Phoebe Boeschen to her staff. Boeschen helped Missouri State capture the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Championship and was the fifth-ranked tennis player in the state of Missouri coming out of high school, according to TennisRecruiting.net. “Adding Phoebe to our coaching staff has made an immediate positive impact on our program,” Gunn said. “She has high level playing experience and a conference title, so she knows what it takes to win a conference championship. She is very knowledgeable about tennis and having her coach on court is making us better at being able to read plays and find solutions in match play. She is also an asset in recruiting future talent with her experience and connections to this region.” Southeast enters the 2020 dual season after strong tournament play this past fall. Velkoska and Lai along with Tarajova

and Barriga each captured doubles titles while Lai also won a singles championship. At the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regional Championship, Tarajova and Zonova each tallied singles wins over Power Five schools. “We were fortunate to get in a lot of tournament play this fall,” Gunn said. “It was a time to try new plays, work on some new doubles teams, and get the valuable match experience we need going into the spring season. It was also a great confidence builder since we were able to earn wins over Power Five schools and win multiple tournament titles.” PLAYERS Zonova returns to SEMO for her senior season. The 2018 All-OVC performer led the Redhawks in singles (14-7, 6-2 OVC, no. 2) in 2019 and played doubles (10-6, 4-2 OVC) at the second position with Sneha. Zonova who possesses a 37-20 career singles record was also selected eighth in her second straight OVC preseason watchlist ahead of this season. “Kseniya is a huge reason why our team has grown and been successful since her arrival in Cape in Fall 2015,” Gunn said of Zonova. “She is a strong leader on the court and her energy and will to win urges her teammates to keep going in the hard matches. She is a threat to any team that we will play this semester.” Lundell rounds out the upperclassmen on the 2020 team. “Maja’s game has good variety and this makes her tough to beat on the court,” Gunn said of Lundell. “She has a big serve and she can play big spin balls from the baseline and she can come in. As a junior she does a great job helping the underclassman grow and get better because she always is wanting the team to do well, not just herself.”

PREVIEW Tarajova leads the returning fivemember sophomore class. In her inaugural collegiate campaign, she was named OVC Freshman of the Year and earned First-Team All-OVC honors. Tarajova was second on the team with a 13-5 singles record (5-3 OVC) at the top spot and competed at no. 3 doubles with Barriga (95, 4-1 OVC). She was also selected fourth in the OVC Preseason Top 10 Players List. “Romana is a powerhouse player who had an amazing year in 2019 and we are looking to build on that this year,” Gunn said of Tarajova. “Now that she has more dual match and OVC tournament experience, she is mentally prepared for the big matches that she has ahead of her. She has also been working hard in doubles to contribute in this area as well as her singles game.” Sinha was third on the team in 2019 with a 12-6 singles record (5-3 OVC), playing at the fifth and sixth slots. In doubles, she appeared in the second position, teaming up with Zonova for a 10-6 mark (4-2 OVC). “Sneha is a tough player to beat because she plays very smart tennis and knows how to use her weapons to her advantage,” Gunn said of Sinha. “She’s not afraid to come in and take the ball aggressively, and this sets her apart from some of her opponents. She also brings a great energy to her matches which intimidates her opponents.” Velkoska was fourth on SEMO, fashioning a 11-8 singles mark (6-2) in the fourth and fifth lineup spots. In doubles with Isabella Krupa, she paced the Redhawks with a 13-8 record (4-3 OVC) primarily in the second position. “Teona is a fighter on the court, and she brings passion to the court every day,” Gunn said of Velkoska. “She has improved her serve and it really helped her get some big wins this fall. She was a big asset for

us in doubles and singles last year, and I’m excited to see what all she will accomplish this year.” Powderly who is a local from Cape Girardeau is the fifth and final sophomore. The daughter of Southeast alumni, Powderly, is the lone Missourian on the roster. “Grace does a great job pushing her teammates to be their best every day,” Gunn said of Powderly. “She is the hardest working player I have ever coached. She has focused a lot on adding power and variety to her serve and it’s starting to pay off for her. She is an energy leader for our program, and she brings intensity and integrity to our team.” Lai had a strong fall in preparation for the 2020 dual schedule. The freshman from Taipei, Taiwan, led the Redhawks with an 11-4 singles record and a 9-4 doubles mark. Lai also won a pair of doubles titles with Velkoska along with a singles championship. “Vivian has done a fantastic job of transitioning from junior tennis to Division I tennis,” Gunn said of Lai. “She has a good sense about doubles positioning and this helps her cover a lot of ground. From the fall tournaments, she has proved that she is a high level player who is ready to compete in dual matches and make an immediate impact for our program.” Valeeva signed with the Redhawks in December ahead of the 2020 dual season. The Ekaterinburg, Russia native, graduated from Gymnasium 5 in 2019 and her arrival increased the SEMO roster to nine student-athletes. “Lera is a great addition to our program, both on the court and in the classroom,” Gunn said of Valeeva. “She brings in a big lefty game and added with her height, she has a big serve that is difficult to return. Our focus is to help her learn and

grow as much as she can before we start conference matches.” Southeast opens its 2020 campaign on Sunday, Jan. 26 with a doubleheader at Louisville. The season includes 19 matches. SEMO hosts three-straight OVC contests from March 27 through April 4 against Austin Peay, Murray State and Jacksonville State at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. PRESEASON POLL “The conference has several teams this year that are at a similar talent level and we are looking forward to the close matchups,” Gunn said. “We are a team that can fly under the radar and create some big upsets this season.” 2020 OVC PRESEASON POLL 1. MARY BETH GUNN M

ary Beth Gunn sets to begin her fifth season as head coach of the Southeast Missouri women’s tennis team in 2019-20.

This past season, Gunn led the Redhawks to their first OVC Championship win in 16 years. As the fifth seed, Southeast overcame #4 Belmont, 4-1, in the first round to finish as semifinalists at the 2019 conference tournament. Gunn also coached her second OVC Freshman of the Year at SEMO in Romana Tarajova. Tarajova became the third Southeast player to win the award and second in three years as Oleksandra Doroshenko garnered the award in 2017. Tarajova was also named to the First-Team All-OVC after she fashioned a 13-5 mark at the top singles position. In the classroom, the team was recognized as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team for the fifth consecutive season as all nine Redhawk student-athletes earned ITA ScholarAthlete awards. The team posted a 3.87 GPA during the 2018-19 school year and each player was selected to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Six members of the 2018-19 squad earned the OVC Academic Medal of Honor for registering a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the academic year. The team also garnered an OVC Team Academic Achievement Award as the tennis program with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher. Gunn coached two All-OVC players in 2018. Oleksandra Doroshenko was named to the First-Team All-OVC and Kseniya Zonova garnered Second-Team All-OVC honors. The duo was the first pair of Redhawk players to be named to All-OVC Teams since Nikole Novikova and Elizabeth Nyenwe both claimed First-Team All-OVC laurels in 2011. Gunn led SEMO to a remarkable turnaround in her second season. After going 1-19 overall and winless in the Ohio Valley Conference the year before, the Redhawks went 13-8 and finished fifth in the OVC with a 5-4 mark in 2016-17. SEMO advanced to its first OVC Tournament in 10 years as its fifth-place conference finish was the Redhawks best in 20 seasons. SEMO ended a string of 10-consecutive losing seasons with its winning campaign a year ago, the program’s first since 2005-06 (12-11). The Redhawks also celebrated their first OVC winning record since 1996-97 (6-4). Gunn coached OVC Freshman of the Year in Oleksandra Doroshenko. Doroshenko, who also earned Second-Team All-OVC accolades, became only the second player in program history to win the coveted award. She led the Redhawks with 16 singles victories and 14 wins in doubles play. Doroshenko ended her 2017 spring by tying the fifth-most singles victories and fourth-most doubles wins in a season at SEMO. She was named OVC Female Athlete of the Week twice and became the first SEMO player to beat an SEC opponent during her stellar rookie campaign. SEMO’s spring success followed a tremendous fall season. The Redhawks finished their 2016 fall campaign with a 56-47 (.544) singles record and 36-25 (.590) mark in doubles play. SEMO accumulated its most wins and best winning percentage in any fall season of competition. Gunn was hired as SEMO’s ninth head women’s tennis coach on November 10, 2015. Prior to joining the Redhawks, Gunn coached at Western Illinois, Limestone College and fellow OVC member UT Martin. She was the head women’s tennis coach for four months at WIU and served as both an assistant coach at both Limestone College (2014-15) and UT Martin (2009-13). Gunn helped with recruiting, administration, fundraising, organizing tournaments and other duties as assigned during her stints as an assistant coach. While at UTM, Gunn also served as the Director of the Skyhawk Tennis Camp from 2009-15 and was an Academic Counselor in the Department of Athletics from 2011-13. Gunn was on coaching staffs for two conference championship teams. She helped lead UTM to the OVC Women’s Tennis Championship in 2010-11 and Limestone College to a Conference Carolinas women’s tennis title in 2014-15. Gunn was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015. Gunn earned both her bachelor’s degree in English & History (2008) and master’s degree in Education (2011) at UTM.

OHIO VALLEY

Now in its 72nd year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which began competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gave the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. Subsequently, the league has shown its stability over the past decade, seeing only one member institution depart over the past 19 years. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart,

74 2020 MEDIA GUIDE

the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged February 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first nontraditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958 Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961 Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. After Title IX legislation passed in 1972, women’s athletics began a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC began formulating plans for women’s athletics in 1975 and established women’s championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982. The conference added women’s golf and softball in 1994 and women’s soccer in 1998. Over its 71 years, OVC teams have garnered national championships and bowl games in football, along with national team or individual titles in the sports of rifle, cross country, track

and golf. The OVC has also produced several Olympic athletes, including Murray State’s Morgan Hicks, who was a member of the 2004 United States Olympic Rifle Team and Morehead State’s Brian Shimer who competed in five Winter Olympics in bobsled (winning a bronze medal in 2002) and coached the 2010 United States bobsled team to its first gold medal since 1948. Former Morehead State football and Eastern Kentucky track and field athlete Dallas Robinson competed with the U.S. bobsled team during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. In addition, some of the greatest players in professional sports were educated at OVC institutions. The list includes former greats such as football’s Phil Simms (Morehead State) and Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois), basketball’s Clem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and Bubba Wells (Austin Peay) and two-sport star Steve Hamilton (Morehead State) to present-day standouts like basketball players Kenneth Faried (Morehead State) and Robert Covington (Tennessee State), football player Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) and baseball player Shawn Kelley (Austin Peay). Hamilton is the only athlete to ever play in the NCAA Basketball Championship, a Major League Baseball World Series (New York Yankees) and an NBA Championship Series (Los Angeles Lakers). In 2007, Eastern Kentucky’s Jacob Korir won his fourth-straight Conference cross country title becoming just the third OVC student-athlete and 13th athlete nationally to accomplish that feat. Korir was a three-time All-American in cross country, earning two top-10 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Nairobi, Kenya, native was also named a track and field All-American twice during his career, was selected as the OVC Male Athlete of the Year in 2006-07 and received the NCAA post graduate scholarship in 2008. In 2011 the Eastern Kentucky men’s cross country team earned a national ranking in the USTFCCCA poll, climbing to as high as No. 17; the ranking was the highest for an OVC

CONFERENCE team since the polls began in the early 1980s. The EKU men would qualify for the NCAA Championship, becoming the first OVC team to reach the national championship meet since 1980. Eastern Kentucky finished 26th overall at the event as junior Soufiane Bouchikhi was 47th in a field of 252 runners. On the women’s side Eastern Kentucky senior Lydia Kosgei became the first EKU woman to ever qualify for the NCAA Championship and went on to finish 37th at the national meet to earn All-American honors. A year later (2012) the EKU men’s cross country team was ranked as high as No. 11 nationally and finished 24th at the NCAA Championship. Wade Meddles led the team with a 38th place finish at the event while Bouchikhi was 40th. In 2013 Eastern Kentucky placed 15th at the NCAA Championship, the highest national finish for an OVC team since 1980. Soufiane Bouchikhi capped his career by winning his fourth-straight OVC Championship and earning National Runner of the Week honors during the season. Bouchikhi finished 26th at the NCAA Championship in 2013, earning All-American honors for the secondstraight season. In 2014 EKU qualified for its fourth-straight NCAA Championship and finished 23rd overall and in 2015 earned its fifth-straight bid and finished 17th overall. EKU is only the second OVC team to ever qualify for five-straight NCAA Championships (ETSU being the other). In 2016, Eastern Kentucky’s Charlotte Imer finished 31st at the NCAA Championship, the second-highest finish ever by an OVC female (trailing only a 24th place finish by Samford’s Lauren Blankenship in 2007). In 2017, the Eastern Kentucky women’s team earned its first national ranking as well as becoming the first OVC women’s team to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The Colonels finished 23rd at the National Championship meet. Following the 2017-18 season, long-time coaches Tom Akers (Eastern Illinois) and Rick Erdmann (Eastern Kentucky) retired. The duo combined for 118 OVC Championships and 115

OVC Coach of the Year Awards. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic Achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. Since the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America program began, the Ohio Valley Conference has had 287 student-athletes honored with the award (including 53 over the past five years). Through the early years of the league, administrators wrestled with fan behavior due to the close proximity of the Conference members and the intense rivalries which developed. Just as it did decades ago, the OVC took the leadership role on what has become a national issue. In 1995, the OVC implemented a first-of-its-kind “Sportsmanship Statement,” a policy which promotes principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one’s opponent. The statement has become a model for others to follow across the nation and has answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics. Additionally, the OVC annually presents the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Morehead State studentathlete, coach and athletics director, to a junior or senior student-athlete with significant athletic contributions who best exemplifies the characteristics of sportsmanship and citizenship. Most recently, the Conference has also implemented the OVC Institutional and Team Sportsmanship Awards, which are presented to one institution and 18 sportspecific teams voted by their peers to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct as outlined by the OVC and NCAA.

The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.
