BLACKSBURG EXHIBITION

THE CHINATOWN STUDY

The Blacksburg Exhibition is a semester’s-end celebration of the work of Chicago Studio. The ten days prior to the exhibition are used by the students to test any outstanding questions around the project. The following pamphlet summarizes, through photographs, ten days in Blacksburg, VA used to further test architectural questions around the case study - a new transit hub. Many of the social and contextual questions about the transit hub were sufficiently dealt with in Definition Without Boundary. The experience of the transit hub, however, was still not understood -the architectural expression of the built structure still not explained. The effort of the students during their time in Blacksburg was to model the hub at a scale large enough to begin to understand how the

architectural components might come together and how the architecture relates to its surroundings. Formally, the project changes slightly as a higher level of consideration is brought to the design. Factors previously left aside are paid careful attention as the scale of engagement increases with the physical model. Again, the purpose of the model is not to show the transit hub in a hyper-realistic sense, but to understand the most basic physical and atmospherical implications of its architecture.
