Student council puts a lot of work into events like Rock around the Clock.

There are about 38 dedicated members who meet every Tuesday morning, in small groups periodically on Thursday mornings and Thursday during lunch to plan various activities for the student body. They organize Homecoming, the blood drive, a week of giving, dodging diabetes, a talent show, bike to school week, intramurals and team tailgate, just to name a few.

The biggest of their projects is homecoming week, which they started planning last May. The students judge at Rock around the Clock, as well as set up and clean up the whole event.

They go early to set up the homecoming dance and stay late to clean up.

Without these fine individuals where would we be? Well, we would have nothing to do once a month on a Sunday for one thing.

And do not forget their leader, who has dedicated more time to students than even student council can understand. “She’s like our own little version of wonder women,” senior Katie Lashier said. The one and only Chris Beguhn. She is literally at everything, doing everything, making things happen. Like all others in the series, Fallout New Vegas puts the player in a post-apocalyptic version of a major city in America. Through scavenging, negotiating and, of course, shooting, the player travels the wastes finding out the truth behind New Vegas.

This game can take anywhere from five hours all the way to 80 hours depending on how much the player wants to do. The environment is so massive; players of all experiences will be entertained for hours on end, but with there being so much in this game, glitches are a necessary evil.

Extremely long loading times are common as well as the occasional complete game failure.

Enemies fall through the ground and people’s heads spin for no reason. Even with all these problems, this game has a lot to do and will keep every type of gamer entertained, only a little patience is needed.

Barron’s ACT Review

a bit more difficult than the actual test in order to make the student fully prepared.

Guest Opinions Today’s pop culture dance is the grind.

What else is there? Bottom line is, this is just how we teens dance now, and that’s how it’s going to be. If they take the grind away, we would all be dancing face-to-face. Unless it’s one of the two slow songs they actually play at prom, face-to-face dancing is just plain awkward. I’m not a good dancer, so grinding is awkward enough for me, but now my dance partner and I are face-to-face, with all of the chaperones creeping on my now super awkward dance? No, thanks.

If they take away the only point of prom, which is grinding with your hot date, nobody would go. Unless you are comfortable doing the cupid shuffle or the douggie all night long. Give it time and the dance craze will change, but for now let’s not have a super lame prom with no grinding.

Quite honestly, the idea of banning grinding is just dumb. The dancing is what appeals to the people who are attending a dance, and if you take away the dancing then no one will want to go to the dance and the turnout will be treacherous. If students don’t go to a dance they will still want to have a fun time. And realistically we all know that students that don’t go to a dance because grinding has been banned will probably end up resorting to much more inappropriate measures.

My viewpoint on the topic is that yes, this dancing style is part of your genera-

tion. You see it on TV, music videos, etc. and you are desensitized toward its inappropriateness. Some students find that dancing in this manner is completely acceptable but at some point, it becomes inappropriate for a school

setting. As an educator, we simply can not promote some of the extreme

dancing that occurs and there needs to be some standards set. Hopefully stu-

dent council and administration will come up with clear guidelines for dancing,

communicate these expectations with the student body and individuals will be held accountable to these standards. If certain people are not following the

Iowa Sleep Disorders Center helps make the best of your rest You check in at the front desk, go to your room and get all settled in. Then someone comes in to attach

wires to your head, chest and finger. They hook all those up to various machines. Finally it is lights out by 9 p.m. This is not what you typically think of when you think of a doctors visit, right? This is exactly what a doctors visit to the Iowa Sleep Disorders Center is like.

The Iowa Sleep Disorders Center does tests like this every night with different patients in

small, hotel-like rooms. The results of these tests are analyzed and subsequently used to help patients adjust their sleep patterns to remedy whatever is causing them to lose sleep.

The sleep center focuses mainly on the elderly, however sleep is vitally

important at any age, especially for teens. Teens need around nine hours of sleep a night and, according to a Stanford study, the average teen only gets around seven and a half. The sleep center deals with disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, and circadian rhythm disorder. Circadian rhythm disorder is the most common sleep disorder among teens. It occurs when the “internal alarm clock” (the reason people wake up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning despite the want to sleep in) gets out of sync. This is where the sleep center can help. They help people to get his or her schedule fixed with either medications or sleep therapy.

Patrick Kearney, band director, began visiting the Iowa Sleep Disorders Center when he found himself struggling to keep his eyes open in the middle of the day. “I was waking up a lot (at night). I wasn’t able to sleep continuously for more than about a half-hour,” Kearney said.

At the sleep center Kearney was diagnosed with sleep apnea and given a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. This improved his sleep and gave him the ability to teach himself how to sleep better. Despite the success of his treatment, Kearney must return to the sleep center for periodic treatments. “I haven’t gone back for another full sleep study,” Kearney said, “but I do have to go in about every four to six months.”

5 Broomball @ Brenton

For something to do on Sunday nights, register now for a Broomball League, offered at Brenton Plaza. Broomball is played on ice, with regular shoes, so skating expertise is not necessary.

The goal is to get a ball into the other team’s net using a stick with a triangle-shaped piece on the end. The cost is $80/person, and registration is open now online. If Broomball doesn’t sound right for you, Brenton also offers public skate everyday, even holidays.

Hours are 11-11 on Fridays and Saturdays, and costs $5 for admission, $3 for skate rental.
