As trees turn a rich orange and the days come alive with crisp autumn air, so too does the ghoulish atmosphere of Britain’s most haunted spots –an ideal time for ghost-hunters to discover some other-worldly locations across Britain.
The Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire, England
For a ghoulish experience in Norfolk, phantom chasers can book a trip to Raynham Hall. Built in 1619, the most famous ghostly sightings at this grand house centre on a pale white-shaped spectre, also known as the ‘Brown Lady’, who appears to unsuspecting guests. In 1936, two visiting professionals even managed to take a photo that captured the curious ghostly shape… visitors can bring their cameras along to selected open days at the hall to see what they capture!

From sighting a strange beast in the countryside to ghostly figures appearing in centuriesold castles, there is no shortage of places with a spooky atmosphere to get the pulse racing this autumn.
Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England
Wotton-under-Edge’s 12th century Ancient Ram Inn is often described as the most haunted house in Britain – a paranormal hotspot that brave visitors can experience during spooky open days. One legend says the pub is built on a pagan ritual site, while another suggests the spirit of a woman accused of witchcraft and burnt at the stake in the 1500s still roams its rooms to this day. The Grade II-listed former priest’s residence is renowned for its spooky tales and while the pub called last orders many years ago, it remains popular for ghost hunts and tours. Margam Country Park, Glamorgan, Wales
Nestled in 1,000 acres of picturesque parklands at Margam Country Park, South Wales, lies Margam Castle, a haunted Gothic mansion. Housed within its beautiful architecture is a ghoulish site that provides many spooky tales. Two spine-tingling paranormal occurrences have been reported here – sightings of the lingering spirit of a former gamekeeper and the ghosts of giggling children. The park is home to the castle, the Orangery Gardens and the ruins of Margam Abbey.

Legoland, Windsor, England
The Beast of Bodmin, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall
As well as offering a great day out for the whole family, with 55 rides, live shows and attractions, this Halloween Legoland Windsor Resort is running a spook-tacular event for all the little monsters out there! Taking place throughout October, there are lots of fang-tastic activities to keep youngsters entertained.
Muncaster Castle, Cumbria, England
Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh, Scotland
Gruesome legend has it that this area of Edinburgh was closed off after an outbreak of plague and abandoned in 1645, leaving a warren of underground streets, homes and alleyways left untouched beneath the Royal Mile. Giving a taste of social history to those curious about the darker side of Britain’s past, one-hour tours explore underground streets and dark corners of Mary King’s Close, even bringing visitors face-to-face with a Plague contact:VisitBritain MediaTeam
Those looking for a bracing autumnal walk with an unexpected story should look no further than Bodmin Moor. The open countryside and breathtaking views on offer have also given rise to ‘The Beast of Bodmin’, a local legend based on numerous sightings of a ‘black, panther-like cat’, with piercing yellow eyes and a taste for livestock! The moor is riddled with mystery too, as it’s home to prehistoric hut circles, several standing stones and a number of medieval farmsteads, as well as a wide array of plants and protected wildlife.
Planning a mysterious trip to Cumbria? Book a tour of Muncaster Castle, where many people have reported seeing unsettling apparitions, not least in the eerie tapestry room. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, Library, Dining Room and Drawing Room to marvel at the splendour of the castle’s architecture and its imposing fortifications. Face coverings need to be worn throughout the castle. Those with a taste for all-things ghoulish can also get themselves a ticket to Muncaster Castle’s Halloween events –including a twilight owl display, from the 22 – 30th October 2022.

Lock up
How was your summer? With many records broken for hot temperatures and hours of sunshine, 2022 was an excellent year for those long, lazy days of summer in the comfort of your static caravan and holiday home.
If you have access to a compressed air line, blow this through the pipes to expel any residual water left in them – and, although you’ve drained down the system, check the levels of non-toxic antifreeze in the central heating, toilet pan, cistern, cistern, shower, and sinks to doubly protect against any water that might be left;
Place moisture absorbers or condensation traps around the home – there are products you can buy or even something as simple as a saucer filled with grains of rice may help absorb excess damp and moisture in the air;
Seal up any holes on the underside of your caravan with fine wire mesh to prevent small creatures from taking up residence in your holiday home over the frosty winter months;
Visit www.cover4caravans.co.uk or please call us on 01702 606301 Cover4Caravans is the trading name of Alan Blunden & Co. Ltd. Alan Blunden & Co. Ltd are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and our registration number is 309694 facebook.com/cover4caravans
Keeping it snug
All caravans are notoriously vulnerable to condensation (and the mould that can develop if it is left to spread);
Make sure to unclog the gutters around the outside of your holiday home and safely dispose of the debris – be careful of any birds’ nests you might encounter;
all the carpets and under and behind pieces of furniture, clean all surfaces, and mop the floors in the galley and shower room;
To combat this, leave open wardrobe and cupboard doors and reposition mattresses and soft furnishings away from the outer walls and into the centre of the room;
If you take care in the way you prepare your static caravan for the winter, when spring arrives you are likely to find it safe, comfortable, and spick and span as you’d want it to be to start a new season of relaxing and enjoyable holidays.
Summary
Getting your static caravan ready for Winter
Clear any air vents and make sure they are doing their job of helping to ventilate the Checkcaravan;the skylights for any damage, cracks, or breaks in the sealant around them, making suitable repairs where necessary;
Condensation
Unclog and check seals
Draining it down Static caravan manufacturers Willerby suggest that you drain down the water systems in your home any time from the beginning of November;
Do this by turning off the water supply and opening the drain taps underneath the caravan and all the water taps inside it (including the shower and fully flushed toilet);
Your final act before leaving your holiday home over winter is to make sure that all the windows are closed, and the door firmly locked behind you.
Winter clean
Spring cleaning will be made so much easier if you’ve done a winter clean before putting your static caravan to bed at the end of the Vacuumseason;
It’s best to take all the bedding – pillows and sheets, blankets, duvets and the like home with you – together with anything of particular value, of course.
You’ll be putting your holiday home to bed – and that means keeping it warm and snug, safely insulated against the cold and storms of Thewinter;greatest threat will come from pipes that freeze up, fracture, and leave a flood of water throughout your caravan;
Since all good things must – sadly – come to an end, now is the time you to start getting your static caravan ready for winter. Here is our checklist of tips and suggestions:
