Out & About

Spring 2021

Robin has certainly been busy over the past few months.

Issue

The weather has been slowly heating up, and whilst the sun navigates the transition from Spring into Summer, Robin has been navigating his way to the far corners of the country. Travelling all the way up to Scotland, as far as Fraserburgh, and then finding himself in Southampton, it’s safe to say he’s been a very busy bee. Talking of insects, we hope Robin doesn’t run in to anymore hairy caterpillars this year after a run in with one in May turned him into the colours of the English flag, very appropriate for the Jubilee but slightly painful nonetheless! For Robin, the month of April was full of sensational food and face-to-face feedback. From meeting with clients in Birmingham over a spicy madras, to enjoying breakfast with a side of haggis whilst chatting with a broker in Scotland – Robin had a chance to enjoy some flavour sensations whilst getting to help our some of our clients make the most of our business relationship. Robin was shown some wonderful places in the North of the UK by a few Scottish Brokers. He remarked upon the beauty of the gothic architecture in Edinburgh and enjoyed learning a little about the history and culture, he was quickly won over by the city’s quirky charm. He was also fortunate enough to travel around Dundee, Perth and Hawick on his journey through Scotland, stopping off to polish off a few pints of the Scottish beer, ‘Tennants’- by the look on his face in this photo it was well worth it!

The month everyone in our office can finally bust out the greeting ‘May the 4th be with you’, and the most jam-packed few weeks for Robin attended three events in May; BIBA in Manchester, a cricket match in Birmingham and an afternoon of horse-racing in Chester! BIBA was an excellent chance for Robin and the rest of the ABACUS Agency & Marketing team to catch up with a lot of different Brokers from all over the country at our stand. On the second evening of the trip the team had a lovely meal at the beautiful Ivy Restaurant with our friends at BLINK, Zoe Williams, Steve Horner and Georgia Coffin. We all had a lovely meal, and it was a wonderful way to round off the trip.

“It was an opportunity to catch up with some good friends and enjoy a few beers and to witness one of the quickest centuries in T20 cricket.” Neal Lowe – Needham Insurance Services

“Being a Worcestershire supporter, I was not over the moon to see such a dominant batting display by our arch rivals Warwickshire. However, Robin ensured that the beers flowed, so even that accompanied by the rain didn’t put a complete dampener on the event. Thank you for a great evening.” Karl Evans – SJL Insurance Services.

Robin has observed that watching the cricket match in Birmingham made for a very interesting day. It was a match fuelled by a heated rivalry between the Birmingham Bears & Northamptonshire Steelbacks. We asked some of the brokers that joined him for the match for their take on the event and here’s what they had to say…

‘At the beginning of June Robin had an early taste of Wimbledon when he joined Zoe Williams and Steve Horner from BLINK at the Queen’s Tennis Championship. In the blazing sun he watched as British number 7, Ryan Peniston defeated Francisco Cerundolo. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Later in the month as the sun shone brightly on the ABACUS office here in Southend, Richard, Robin and Aiden (who is currently doing work experience at the company whilst studying for his Economics degree) were tying up the laces of their walking boots to join a handful of brokers for our annual hike. The hike this year was a 13-mile trail in the Offa’s Dyke region in Herefordshire. The group of trekking travellers were surrounded by nature and views of the beautiful British countryside, and by Aiden’s calculations he alone walked an incredible 14.38 miles, or 30.5K steps in one day! It was, as always, a tough but enjoyable excursion. It was a chance for Robin to take a step out of his car and make a journey on foot for a change, and he managed to come away from the trip with only a few scrapes, a handful of gnat-bites and a solitary horsefly bite on his finger. It is safe to say that in the past few months Robin has learnt that insects are not his friends, and he’ll stick to the wonderful company of insurance brokers instead.‘
