ello Hopkins Student Body, Now that we have all survived hurricane Sandy, it is time to get back on track. Natural disasters can be distracting, especially if they give you a four-day weekend, so stow away those portable radios, pack up the flashlights, remove yourselves from the cots in the rec center and GO VOTE. If you forgot amidst all the alarmist chaos, there is a pretty important election coming.

If you still cannot remember, maybe a few of these buzzwords will jog your memory: the economy, Mittens, Big Bird, Romnesia, apology tour, horses & bayonets, Nobama and the all time crowd favorite … binders full of women. Remember now? Yeah, we thought so. For most of us, this will be our first time voting on a presidential election, which is a pretty exciting prospect. This is what our Founding Fathers fought for; this is what distinguishes us from not that many other countries in the world; this is what Paris Hilton told us to do and then did not do herself. How could we not capitalize on this every four-year opportunity? Joking aside, it is easy to bemoan the importance of voting: “I am a Democrat and come from a largely red state”; “I am a strict conservative living in California “; “I did not register to vote because I do not want jury duty.” All of those seem like perfectly valid reasons, but they are not. Cue Scott Brown, the Republican senator of Massachusetts. Crazier things have happened and, even if you do not live in a swing state, every single vote counts, so please Hopkins students – get out there and vote! In the second debate, a concerned student asked the candidates about the current state of undergraduates. As you may have heard, 50 percent of recent college graduates do not have jobs or do not have jobs consistent with their college degrees. This is an alarming statistic and a statistic that directly affects us Hopkins students. We have a say in our futures and we must speak up. Overall, this issue of the magazine is meant to entertain you and better inform you, to make you laugh and to make you think. We tried to make it as politically balanced as possible, though that is often difficult to achieve in 1) a publication 2) a college campus. Please bear with us. Whether or not you agree with the opinions of those featured in the magazine, these are all important issues and, oftentimes, it helps to hear another perspective. Plus, whether you are red or blue, elephant or donkey, conservative or liberal, it all comes down to one question: Obama/ Biden, Romney/ Ryan or a third party candidate? Only time will tell. Happy Voting! Anne Badman and Emily Nadelmann
