WINTER STATIONS COMPETITION ENTRY - 2018 (PARTNER)
embark As the seasons change and animals migrate to ancestral breeding grounds, people have adapted to these migration patterns, the ultimate architectural consequence of human interaction with these migratory systems is development of the teepee, a structure meant to be quickly assembled and dis-assembled as humans move from region to region. The shingles of the teepee are curved using the kerfing patterns. The technique of kerfing, otherwise known as living or lattice hinge, allows rigid panelized materials to become flexible by cutting relief patterns into the material, via laser-cutting or CNC routing. At a distance, the facade of the teepee appears impermeable. However, through an intimate relationship with the structure, one begins to discern the kerfing pattern used to warp the shingles as being representative of life and its relationship to migration.
