BRIEF To identify the design principles present in the slected narrative and translate into a structure not exceeding 300mm x 300mm.
01
Good communication of design concept, priciniples of design and relationships of volumes (dominant, sub-dominant, subordinate) should be there.
SHAPE CITIES
DESIGN CONCEPT
IDENTIFYING DESIGN PRINCIPLES
THE STRUCTURE
Thekla, the city in the narrative, is a city under construction. Hence, I want certain parts of the structure to look unfinished, with exposed volumes that are not connected with each other. The principle of contrast is highly emphasized and shown in the structure through sizes and heights.
Little of the city can be seen from outside. But there is a lot of things going on within the city itself, once you step in. DOMINANT CONTRAST The action shows rhythm.
Repetitions of actions. Mention of “construction” and “destruction”, which are total opposites.
SUB-DOMINANT
SUBORDINATE

SPATIAL CONCEPT
RENDERED FLOORPLAN | NTS
This spatial layout is based soley on my client’s time caricature and her routines within the house.
The proper functioning if a design is directly related to the purpose of those who inhabit and use it. It is important for designer to analyse the user’s activities and habits carefully. Final 1:20 scaled model is made using 3mm thick cardboard using jointery methods. BUBBLE DIAGRAM

CLEANSE
CONVENIENT
There are 4 main spaves within the apartment, with the cleanse space as the centre. This is because for the client, cleansing is linked to other activities as well. Hence for her convenience, cleanse is put at the central space. Rest and study space are bigger as compared to other spaces since these areas are where most activities takes place for the client.

FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT BRIEF Conceptualize and plan a spatial experience through interpretation of the narrative “Alice in Wonderland”.
RESEARCH
IDEATION
RHYTHM
PROTOTYPE 1
Repetition
Alternation
Hard to differentiate different stories.
FLUIDITY
The space has to within the boundary of a 9-grid square of 9000mm by 9000mm, addressing min. 3 dialects of tectonic space.
Slopes are not the best way to represent fluidity. Find other stronger elements that show fluidity
NARRATIVE (CHP5) RHYTHM: A strong pattern of Alice’s changes in sizes FLUDITY: Alice’s neck movements. Quoted from the narrative, “... her neck would bent about easily in any direction, like a serpent.”
Progression
The space is too open, hard to see a transition in spaces. There is little sense of enclosure.
Placement of the walls does not show a strong sense of rhythm. Research more on rhythm and how to present it in the space.
PROTOTYPE 2
OPENNESS & ENCLOSURE
Fluidity is too superficial. Find images to get inspirations and look for elements to present it.
The space is still too open. Think of where to add the roof and the outer walls as well. Use the grids
OPENNESS & ENCLOSURE: Alice feels conflicted in the beginning due to her size changes. We perceived it as being enclosed, as she’s trapped with uncertanity. At the end, she accepted her size changes. We perceived it as openness, as she has let go of the confusion.
Use grids for the stairs. Follow the grids so that it does not look like it is placed there.
Rhythm is better shown.
FINAL MODEL
FLOORPLANS | NTS
We cut out openings in the form of a wave to show fluidity. We used the outer walls strips to show progression and rhythm in the fence on the second storey. Using the grids, we added more walls and a roof. The walls placement are placed in such a manner to create open and enclosed spaces. We also show openness in the space as not every part of the space is filled up.

1200MM x 1130MM x 1200MM (L x W x H) Hinges are used as additional support. L brackets and flat brackets are also used to strengthen.
The floor panel is activated by cranking. After the floor panel is lowered down, the user has to push the “mopping” bar as they crawl through this space. As the bar is pushed, it pushes the bar that latches the steps to the wall away. As the latches are unlatched, the steps fall one by one as the user continues to push the “mopping” bar.
1 : 10 WORKING MODEL | 3MM PLYWOOD
To support the weight of the steps, we designed a sliding support for it. Mechanism inspired by door latches and push bars. Model done in 3mm thick plywood. We made use of laser cutting to cut the model pieces.

SYNOPSIS What is Utopia? It differs between people. Common perception about a Utopian society usually revolve around wealth, health, fairness and peace. Often, it also involves the idea of kinship; of having loved ones around to share both sadness and happiness together. Our belief in a Utopian society stems from kinship. We believe that spending time with your loved ones is what truly brings happiness to a person’s life. Our belief of Dystopia is not knowing what is most important to you. Many people are obsessed with the idea of ownership of property as it is often a sign of status. They feel a sense of thrill when opening their delivery boxes. However, this sense of excitement is short-lasting. Thus, they would continue to buy, and the cycle repeats itself. By surrounding yourself with all these purchases, could you truly be happy?
15 DTR3 FILM PROJECT
In the film, the idea of Utopia and Dystopia is shown through our protagonist, Sarah. For Sarah, her Utopia is her family and her dystopia were her perception of what she thought to be most important. Like most teenagers, Sarah is obsessed with the idea of ownership. It causes her to buy more but it seems to never be enough for her. Her parents disapproved of her spending habits and had tried to persuade her to change her habits but to no avail. As a result, it has casued a strain to their relationship. As days passed, her room looks more like a storage room with all kinds of shopping bags and delivery boxes lying around. When she does not have enough money to spend, she always borrow from her friends. One day, as she was cheking out of an online shop, she realises that her bank balance is reflecting a $0.00. She tries to borrow money from her friends. However, all of them demanded her to pay them back the money that she owes. She realised that she is unable to pay them back due to the lack of money. Will she manage to get herself of this mess she created? Through this short film, we want to question the idea of whether a person’s perceived Utopia is a Utopia or Dystopia. The film begins with the idea that the world of consumerism is the Utopia as it is thought to be the solution to personal happiness and satisfaction. As time passes, the person is unknowingly exchanging more valuable things in their life for this short-lasting happiness. This is when the perception of consumerism as a Utopia changes as the act of consumerim does not allow for the continuation of happiness. At the end of the film, we hope to show that the act of consumerism should not be one’s utmost priority.
NOTES This is a group project, my part cosists of being the cameramen, doing the script and storyboard. Refer to 04_Tan_JH.mp4 in Portfolio folder for the short film.
