BAL AN C I N G AC T Educational Architecture, Hudson River, NYC The project strives to design public community space regarding balancing act between water and landscape. The project uses tides of Hudson River.

It creates a moving playground - as a shifting walkway on the harbor and a floating structure on the water.
Gold Award - International Design Award Bronze Award - American Architecture Prize
BALANCING: The balancing act structure connects a pier to Hudson River. By applying the law of the lever, the strong beams are used to supported the weight of the structure, which sits on the edge of the pier.

The structure could be separated into two parts. One part is floating on the water and free to move depending on tide's levels. This part will drive the other end, which is above the ground to move vertically.
DRIFT: Durning drifting in New York City, a family played on their balcony. They used to snow- the simplest material to make their own playground. The whole family used snow to build slides and different landscapes for various play activities.

DIAGRAM: By categorizing five behaviors of children play, the final diagram focused on associative play and cooperative play. I came up with different landscapes to create a space for both behaviors. Hudson River Tide Height in One Year
WATER This project used a variation of Hudson River's water level as a generator to shift the landscape and bring strong visual sense.

MOVEMENT WALK PATHS The walking paths split into six different heights and slopes parts. Based on the different water level and tide trend, those pathways could be moved in the vertical and tilting way. People can walk or do some skating on these walk paths. The movement is also seen by passers-by on the ground.

WATER SUSTAINABILITY At the end of structure, the six pathways combines into a puzzle shape and each one contains a water filter into it. After filtering, the Hudson River dirty water will become to fresh water and flow into the swimming pool under the walkpaths. At the Winter time, The swimming could shift to a skating playground.

TH E L O O P Taoism Vegetarian Restaurant, Soho, New York, NY
THE LOOP features an artful blend of TAOISM VEGETARIAN CUISINE in New York city. The design inspiration is a Taoism’s YIN & YANG principle, which perceives two opposite forces, but could coexist.
The design creates two main structure to highlights a Chef Workstation and a series of Chinese Wine Bar. The two structure also helps to separate different functional space.

Taoism- it is a spiritual, philosophical tradition of Chinese origin that emphasizes living in harmony with the nature. Two opposite forces against with each other, but it creats a balanced loop.
PLAN: The restaurant highlights two features. One is a Chinese wine bar at the entrance. It creates a lively and casual space for people hang out. Another one is a chef workstation at the end of the restaurant. It displays how the chef magically transform the vegetable into a meat. Along the window side. CHINESE VEGATARIAN CUISINE: All meals made by tofu, soy bean, mushroom, bamboo shoots and all kinds of vegetables. BUT the food taste or shape are exactly as same as the meat dishes. This dishes first served for royal family at the ancient China. Section C
ATMOSPHERE: -Create a gradient feeling transform from white to black. - The bronze lighting sticks used for bar and chef workstation to create an echo. - Even though color, function, experiences are opposite, but material, pattern could help to balance the different and create a harmony dining space for costumer.

HIDE AND SEE Paramatric Playground New York, NY
The design strives to create a typology playground by using parametric technique. 225 pieces of modulars follow the samilar geometric shape. The playground could be cut and fabircated in five days by two people.
The playground applied the geomtric shape with aperture features to captuing light and shadow. Meanwhile, the four heights of entrance will give children different hide and see. experience.

READING NOOK Retail Book Store Jinan, China
This project strives to design a retail book store for art museum. The central piece used as display platform and storage cabinet. The book shelf creates interlocked directions.
It will attracted the vistor from outside and inside. This project had been build and focued on construction, material and details.

Spice up your kitchen is a group work about creating a multi-functional community space for a church. The thesis envisions the effective and systematic space.
By layering different community activities and participants in one space by designing a system of dynamic furniture, pantry space and storage.

The thesis aims to transform underused space to interactive playground while create a collaborative connection between communities and retrieves the notion of playfulness and the unexpected.
