Studio 8

Studio 8: • Interrogation of the detailing decisions: Since the task in this studio is to draw a 1:1 detail from a given 1:10 drawing. The first thing we did is to find the main site plan with respect to this specific drawing so that we can be able to know where this part of drawing is. According to the reference number and the names of materials, we found that the block in red is the focus.

On the site, we saw the colorbond half round gutter and the cantilever structure with one end on the concrete wall. Based on the information from the drawing, we identified the location of the “box gutter”, “concrete wall”, “door” and “slab”.

Composition:

Prior to compositing the 1:1 drawing, the scale on the drawing which is 1:10 needs to be transformed into 1:1. The first thing of composition of the 1:1 drawing is to locate the drawing on A1 paper. Then I would be able to draw a 1:1 detailed drawing based on the 1:10 construction drawing.

• Building process The concrete slab is the first component that is constructed as it is the primary structure which carries main load of the structure. Then, the structure of doors and gutters are secondary structure. Moreover, for the connection area, the blot joint has been used to fix the cantilever structure on the side of concrete wall. • Sustainability and environmental analysis This site contains a mixture use of concrete, metal and timber. Concrete has the highest embodied energy which also releases a great amount of carbon dioxide while making it. It is a unsustainable material because it cannot be recycled. Metal contains a relatively high embodied energy and water while making them. However, its malleability makes it highly used for sheathing as metal can prevent from corrosion when it has coating on the surface. Timber is a sustainable material because it can be recycled and has the minimum embodied energy. • Economic implications of decisions This site only use concrete as the material of loadbearing wall and floor system since concrete has good ability of compression. The rest of structure are either in timber materials or metals which are cheaper than concrete. Additionally, the construction type is generally frame construction which uses less materials than mass construction.

• Where and why thins go wrong The round gutter on the side of cantilever has an opening at yard which it can form a small waterfall on raining days. It is better to make the gutter has a little slop so that the water can runoff out of the yard.
