I Love perspective drawings. They are a form of sorting things out. Also,

It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. - Abraham Lincoln. While inclusiveness is my goal in design, I always appreciate the subtle details of any scale. I have a passion in designing for people. Design and planning add to one another. Embracing empathy is why I want to be a planner. Even making one audience happier brings satisfaction to me. Where is my cap for my satisfaction? I am a Christian, I serve, there is no limit to that.

I THINK.

INTRO As a class, we were asked to develop inventory and analysis for the North College Hill community. After the two phase of inventory and analysis, the client asked us to each provide with a housing program for the community of North College Hill. The community is located north of Hamilton county Ohio. Its distinct characters would be illustrated as I tell the story. A housing program that carries on the backyard story, of North College Hill.

Scale 2: “On Site (7000 Hamilton Ave, the center of the north College Hill), What’s the walking distance to places.” Walking Distance to places including Church, Institutions, and restaurant diagram.

Defining Character (Analysis), of the neighborhood. Our client provides services helping specifically the visually impaired group. It is crucial to have empathy towards targeted audience. At previous phase, mobility issues considering the walkability of the neighborhood was my empathetic point in the analysis/design process.

Inspired by the logic of coding structure platform, I like to push my self in developing organic diagrams. Through the conservative structure of coding logic, I am able to organize my organic thinking in a presentable way. The organic element in contrast to the conservative logic, can include much more humane elements like, empathy.

3 Telling the story (Design Concept and Design), based on the inventory and analysis.

My work needs to speak for itself. One of the route I take is to push myself in making my representation of certain ideas vivid and organic. I am passionate towards earthly and human elements in idea forming and

referencing. After all, we are one of the most influencing of our beloved planet earth.

These areas has the character of relatively open urban garden for socialization. The area closer to the “red energy” are designed to hold larger open air events (barbecues, temporary stage perform, and etc.)

Why stopping at mixing pharmacy with coffee shop? The implementation of the green roof would create a wider range of functions at the relative center of the site. It can be a place for contemplating, gathering.

These areas has distinct characters of contemplation. By emphasizing on the sensor of hearing (quiet), and smelling (plants and earth), The garden are able to provide the user senses of secured and focused.

INK SPLASH, THE SITE PLAN OF MONDRIAN Contour Line Work Exercise, Foam Core Model Building Instructor: Barry Kew Undergraduate Second Year Site Planning Studio University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.

1 OBSERVATION (of the existing attributes) FORMATION (of what was not there yet) Given the abstract painting (Mondrian, Color Composition) from the instructor, I was asked to deliver the following: contour line work, and contour model, creatively.

By looking at the image for several days, I decided to choose the gray as positive space. It is uniformed throughout the painting. By tracing it in my brain, I visioned movements o f the gray paints.

Star t by tracing what w obvious flow of the color c picked the boundaries. Thes are to restrict the ink movem directions. I then figured movement lines.

as the most composition, I se boundaries ment in cer tain d out several

I tried to step back and see what would it look like without the painting in the background. The image I drew was clearer, I want to connect these ink into actual form.

How did I want to have the ink come to form? Ink flows, I need force to create movement. Ink was trapped in dark boxes in the original painting, I just need to take out all the barriers. I connected the boundaries of the ink just the way they flows when I took out the barriers.

What was the flow now became still. I was satisfied with the ridge-like forms, as I can imagine rivers run through it.

Tool, Fill, and a Story of Your Own

UC WALKING TOUR, THE GUILD LINE OF MAKING STORIES Site Documenting of UC, Walking Tour Map & Poster Design Instructor: Shilpa Mehta Urban Planning Undergraduate First Year Graphic Studio (Fall 2016) University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.

INTRO The UC Walking Tour project is a semester long project. I was asked to design a tour route as well as the tour map around the University of Cincinnati. This was the first formal graphic communication/planning project I have done, yet it always reminds me of why I do what I do. It is, to tell the story. My target audience is to those who visit me from afar. My goal is to share my stories, and have it perceived from another (the audience)perspective.

This walking tour is dedicated to those who came to visit me, wanting me to show them the campus, from an International student point of view. More importantly, from my point of view. Graphic Designer Milton Glaser once said, art is the way we deal with everything. I see them as tool, through the walking tour, my objective is to represent myself by providing the places I found attractive. Moreover, to provide them the platform, that whenever one reaches a destination, they are going to fill their curiousity with colors and textures. By not giving everything, I hope to leave the audience with something their own, alongside with the walking tour.

“Draw what you know.” -Barry Kew PLAN 2011 STUDIO

Critical Thinking Requires Diagrammatic Approach Compiling Thoughts can be limited to dimension. For example, linear stacks of information may not generate the optimal idea. Instead, layering the information provides a three dimensional thinking/ understanding of certain characters. Through methods like layering, the formation of drawings in a person’s mind, can be structurally cohesive.

A

nalysis Sketching/Mapping/Diagramming

In order to quickly record pop up ideas, I often let myself loose on neatness. Ideas wor th nothing if it is meaningless. To polish my ideas, I would go back and sor t previous ideas in a meaningful way. At the mean time, I often find cer tain relationships that was not discovered before. Building on the polished idea, story needs to be told with hierarchy. Using graphic representation, I push myself in using different approach (Color Contrast, Size Contrast, Grids, Shapes, and etc) to illustrate the story more vividly.

Perspective Drawings, is a form of Slow Thinking.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS It is research proven that people can be sorted by the ways they think. More specifically, I end up being in the zone of heavily using the method of slowthinking. Drawing compare to talking, is a better way of illustrating my idea while also polishing it. The thinking process drains energy, and I enjoy it just as much as a decent workout session.

Presentation Script For the North College Hill “Backyard” Site Plan

“...(Intro) While I was doing analysis for the sites previously. The empathy in me always itches on the issue of how a visually impaired person could get around the neighborhood. After several research was done, I was informed that the intense sense of high speed traffic, or the higher volume of traffic, are more amplified towards those who are visually impaired. Here is a walking friendliness map I made. The volume of the traffic are significantly higher on the nor th side of Nor th College Hill, and decreases as it moves on to the south side of the neighborhood. Here is a more abstract but stronger representation of the traffic volume transition. The parcel I selected, 6550 Hamilton Ave., locates at the looser end of the spectrum. As i mentioned earlier, because the intensiveness from the surrounding environments, amplifies on people who have visual impairments. The sense of easement when getting closer to the looser end of the spectrum can be illustrated through sound waves perception. When I zoomed in on the site parcel, I first had the idea of, providing a friendly place targeting to absorb the frustration left by the higher volume of traffic that was imposed on people who have visual impairments.. But why stop there? Relaxation is not enough for a home. I read, and think, a lot, in my backyard. ...(Stop)Backyard. Having designated housing without any facilities is called storing people. Star ting by adding garden aspect onto the site, I pushed myself forward in the thinking of my childhood fantasy. What do I want my castle to be like?

Things that satisfied my fantasy is always a sense of secure and acceptance. Here, my idea is to implement designated shuttles on site to help people who suffer from the danger of walking. Having urban Garden for contemplation and socialization. Larger open air for event hosting, and mixed use development on site to bond people even closer. I fur ther cleaned up the idea of absorption and expression, here is a circulation form of the energy transition. (Stop) The general concept of the site 6550 Hamilton Ave. is housing with mixed use facilities. The housing aspect opens to everyone who would successfully acquire the approval form the leasing office. The main user group of the mixed use building are the residence of 6550 Hamilton Ave. The site features designated outdoor event hosting space to fur ther provide a sense of a bonded community within 6550 Hamilton Ave. As people with visual impairments tends to be more sensitive on other sensors, implementing urban gardens on to the site would increase the friendliness of the site. Each residential building should be equipped with one urban garden, instead of parking lots. To fur ther assist on quickly experiencing the energy transition, shuttles bus are frequently launched on site, and circulates within the site. The shuttle parking lot is also where the general parking spot located. It should house at least 30 vehicles and still having 5 shuttle parking spots. ...(Outro)”

Research Paper: Google Glass: A Future Wearable Device that Will Make Our Life Better. Date: 7th April, 2014

“...Besides arguing about the Global Positioning System that Google Glass provided, easy notification access provided by the Google Glass is the main prohibition when meeting with driving. It is clearly listed in the Law that driving while holding a phone either to text or to call, is illegal. The image of driving while texting and phone calling appears a lot with youngsters. According to Texting and Driving Safety, among 82% of 16-17’s which percentage owns cellphones, 52% percent of them admitted the action of calling & answering the phone while driving, and 34% of them admitted that they text while driving (Texting and driving safety). As wearable devices like Google Glass, smart watches from Motorola and Samsung, and etc, are being commercialized recently, very likely new driving laws will be designed

to restrict it. In an alternative term, Google Glass wearers ought to install a device in their car that disables Google Glass from receiving the phone notification if to access notification when driving is strictly prohibited in the future law. In this case, those who are texting and calling while driving would still pull out their phone to do the same thing ignoring the law, remaining the risk level as high as before...
