1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” (Paul Klee)
9
10
Guangzhou Opera House/ Zaha Hadid, 2010 The lines intersect into a reputation geometric pattern, which then form a transparency surface insets into the original surface of the building. This illustrates that sometimes the boundaries between point, line and plane are seamless.
11
Design Concept My design idea for this exercise was use the connection of similar geometric shapes to represent the relationships between point, line and plane. The first relationship I wanted to illustrate was a point is the beginning of everything. Thus, after cutting some simple random geometric shapes, I joint all the geometric shapes together at a central point. Starting from that point, the design showed the transition from point to line to plane. Apart from that, I also indented to illustrate the seamless boundary relationship between line and plane. As in most of the time, lines comprise plane. However, it could also happen that planes form lines, which was represented by the hollow sinking cube in the model. When I was making the model, I found that creating angel and slopes as well as making intersection and connection would make the space richer in layering.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL
View of the sky, view of the horizon, view of the ground.

18
The Cloud Pavilion, Sperpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013/ Sou FUjimoto The repeated basic geometry shape formed the frame and infill of the pabilion at the same time.

Design Concept For this exercise, I was interested in exploring the hierarchy relationships of separation, interaction and integration between frame and infill. Especially for the integration, the infill became part of the frame, together they formed an invisible frame. At the same time, the transition from regular to chaos through the framing system was also shown in the design.

22
USING EXPERIENCE My design also focus on special experience through the journey for the users.

1.3 MASS My mass drawing tried to capture the moment of falling cubes to represent the relationship between mass and gravity. Besides, the contrast between the solid cube and lightening cube illustrate that mass is not only something solid, but also it could be something void as long as it has volume. The space aimed to create timeless atmosphere and lose sense of direction for the users.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION
29
2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE My site preference is located at the corner of the herring island. I chose this site because it is the lowest point of the herring island and actually there is no walk path or entrance to access this place. I found it by accident when I was taking pictures around. I managed to get down there and walk a way through this place. The end of this little journey was the point access to the river. For me, this site is a little secret of the island and the journey I discovered it (the image shows below) was a process of a secret being exposed. The sun direction shows how the light would change. It’s important as light quality would be the main element of my design.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN
Being inspired by the site, I came up my design concept is to design a pavilion that embody the process of a secret from being concealed to exposed. A secret being concealed is undercover in the dark, while a secret comes out would be exposed in the air. Thus, my design would be a place transferring darkness to lightness, using the contrast between solid enclose space and fully exposed place.

Earth means the solid base of the ground, suggesting that this studio earth is meant to be building the basic solid foundation for our architectural study, as it’s the first studio in our bachelor study. After this semester, I do feel the huge progress I have made. Starting with the three tectonics, the studio pushed us to develop conceptual designs through mode making and drawings. Nevertheless, I did find it quite struggle to generate the design ideas for these tectonics as the brief were quite open. In this situation, the president study was necessary for me to have a sense of what these exercises were about, what idea/ message this studio tried to communicate and which direction I would like my design to go with. When I look back to my design for these exercises, I found myself have been improved in design development process. As I was quite struggle to generate ideas for the tectonics, I always started my design process with a lot of experiments. Through these experiments, I found the direction for my design and figure out the idea behind. However, I found it in such way, sometimes my design would not be able to present the idea very specifically or the ideas behind actually remain unclear. Thus, at the beginning of the secret place design, I think it’s better for me to have a chance and time to come up and determine the design concept first by making the conceptual model. In this time, as I already determined the concept, the design process would be more fluent and objective. Over all, the studio Earth pushed me a lot in terms of conceptual design development, model making and presentation skills orally and visually. I think these skills will provide a solid base for me in the future study.
