Environmental Diversity for Student Residentce Life Master Thesis Project | Adaptive Reuse of RISD Residence Hall 15 Westminster St, Providence, RI | Spring 2018

College students, especially art school students, are extremely sensitive and facing all kinds of psychological problems. According to Shauna Summers, director of RISD Counselling and Psychological Services, anxiety, stress and difficulties in handling human relationships are the three most serious and common mental health problems among students of the Rhode Island School of Design. By introducing diverse common areas, my thesis project focused on studying the impact of environmental diversity on students mental health, and how to incorporate this theory into the practice of architecture and interior design.

If there was a space on the roof or outside near the room, where you could enjoy nature, How inclined would you be to work or stay there?

How do you define "privacy" when doing creative work? 1. A space with some strangers who don’t know you and don’t care about your work 2. Separation from others 3. A secure space with a few friends 4. A released space without judgments

A Friend of Mine Exhibition Design |Client Based Adaptive Reuse Project The Chateau de Boisbuchet, 16500 Lessac, France | Spring 2017 Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVU4zrLK_TM This project is intended to create a travelling exhibition system for Alexander and his collections. My design strategy focuses on building up the communication between the audience and the objects through metaphor between the installation and five sections of human body. The proposed exhibition system engages audience to treat the objects, in the same way as Alexander did, as living creatures.

Curation| Collections, Existing Condition & Concept Development

Curation Inspiration

Sample of Collections

“When he bought a new piece, he told his biographer Ernest Jones, it was placed in the dinner table. ‘In front of him, as a companion, during the meal.’” This description clearly indicates Alexander's attitude towards the object he owns: he considers them as his own friends, as individuals with stories and thoughts, rather than things with no lives. The aim of this travelling exhibition is to let audience understand the story between Alexander and his collections and get envolved in this communication.

Concept Inspiration

The Body Itself

Metaphors for the Absence of Body Metaphors for Five Segments of A Human Body

Inspired by René Magritte’s work, "the Eternally Obvious", in which he cut a nude portrait into five selfcontained sections, my design strategy is to use five objects of the same period as metaphors for the five segments of a human body, and let them to elaborate their stories in a vibrant way. Similar designs have also been observed in Kinetic Sculptures by Moholy Nagy and ‘The Triadic Ballet’ by Oskar Schlemmer, but in a much more obstruct and vivid way.

Expo Milan 2015 in Tongji Exhibition Design | Real Project in 2 Weeks 1239 Siping Road, Shanghai, China, 200092| Spring 2015 Team Members: Jiaying Bai, Shihao Dai, Qing Deng, Shu Wang Supervisor: Jing Liang The intention of this project is to promote ideas of the constructions of each country’s pavilion in Expo Milan 2015 to people in Shanghai. Inspired by the theme of Expo Milan 2015 ( Feeding the planet, Energy for life) and the inspiration of the Italian Pavilian of Shanghai World Expo, we combine the concept of the wheat filed and the game stickers to make the interesting structure. We would like to create an exhibition experience like a tall wheat field and let visitors explore this adventure.
