“ To integrate complex and multiple social conditions by re-establishing, reconstructing and revitalizing.”
Background Research
Site Situation
The big challenges that Singapore currently face are slowing social mobility and ageing, mostly of elderly with low SES background.
Located at 80 Circuit Road, Singapore 370080, the current site functions as a food and market centre.
SES (Sociaeconomic Status) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person’s work experience and of an individual’s social position in relation to others based on income, education and occupation.
With flats dating back nearly half a century, Circuit Road stands as one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore, though its reputation as an urban ghetto is prehaps why its public prominence is overshadowed by the likes of heritage towns like Queenstown, Tanglin and Toa Payoh.
Low income and education have been shown to be strong predictors of a range of physical and mental health problems for the elderly which may be due to their environmental conditions of being in the low social class.
Even though transportation is easily accessible, the site itself has very few amenities as it is being surrounded by many old housing estates and majority of them are elderly which may feel it is an issue because of their physical body and strength to walk a distance.
Due to their physical and mental health problems such as dementia, one of the major problems that they face is social isolation.

As the site is being surrounded by HDB flats, the site itself inadvertently becomes the “core of interaction”.
Issues:
Objective:
Methods:
1. Lack of space for elderly to hang around and interact with one another. 2. Too much of encloseness around and within the site. 3. Lack of healthcare facilities around the site.
To design a heterogeneous space where complex and multiple social conditions are integrated.
Blurring of boundaries between “indoor” and “outdoor”.

02 R.O-LAB
Overview This project started from using virtual reality and consisted of many different stories and parts in it. Instead of turning the unused space in the forest into a mirror maze, the function of the space is recreated into a more meaningful and interesting purpose - the R.O Lab. It is a two storey building, consisting of two main activities held inside. Research and Observation.
Part One - The Device
A device was made to show that even though imperfection can be hidden by choice (opening of side mirrors), it can’t be hidden forever (the gaps in between) and could be accumulated overtime.
“ The prolonged imperfections, vanishes into the shadowy luminous breadth.”
Part Two - The Story There lies a battle of familiarity through the inner voice - the seeing of the duplicated versions with a crack in between. Escaping visions and covering shades to extend the journey of exits appears to be difficult. Lillianna suddenly saw herself standing with a forest kind of atmosphere around her. As she continues walking inside, she find herself trapped with reflected mirrors. Emotions starts to overwhelm her as she stared at her own reflected portraits. After that, the whole reflections shifted and many different type of lines were formed with a small gap in between every two “doors”. Lillianna then saw many beautiful “things” around her instead of the imperfections. Overall, this space allows one to see many images of oneself. They can control the mirrors to either see what they want or hidethe viewsthat they do not want to see. However, it is difficult to escape out of the space with them opening or closing the mirrors and the amount of portraits and views around them.
Part Three - Reality R.O Lab is located within the empty space of the forest. It consists of two main activities - Research and Observation. People in Level 1 would discuss their observations after their dayof travel outside the lab, such as the wildlife animals and the green plants. There’s a linkway that links the main building to the garage, which makes the wildlife animals unable to attack the people inside the R.O Lab. People in Level 2 would do more in depth research so as to add on to their observations and send the entire report to the city area. At the same time, people can get a better view of what’s happening on the ground level. Section

03 CONNECTION
Overview Located at the Blue Moon Valley, it was designed to allow tourists and locals to have close intimacy to the nature and interact with one another. Through Connection, people can have a clear view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. In addition, since the Blue Moon Valley has a long stretch of river, tourists and locals do not need to walk along the river course when they can just cut across. Materials used are mainly wood and plastic since it is not too expensive. Furthermore, the use of wood can make one blend into the nature and the surroundings.

Ant Nest
Blinking and sneezing are the two chosen verbs. The actions of the two verbs are being recorded into a video. Blinking: Forth and back of the cracking of the egg. Sneezing: Blowing of dust particles.
Sketch of one of the five joints
The ant nest is being build with reference of the cross section and with only three materials to use (cardboard, aluminium foil and wire). From the five joints that made the ant nest, one joint is being selected to form into a bridge, which is the Connection.

04 WONDERLAND
Overview It is a group project done in collaboration with the Scandinavian Business Seating for InDesign Singapore 2016. Flowing with the theme “Wonderland, the event set-up is designed with extraordinary spaces being crafted by using the play of scale and visual distortion. Vistors who enter the Scandinavian Business Seating 4-level building, will experience the vast difference from the outside environment and inside, infusing the interior usage of the exquisite Scandinavian culture.

05 REMINISCENCE OF THE GREEN
Overview It is a group project done for Park(ing) Day. Park(ing) Day Singapore is a community initiative by SUTD, in partnership with Urban Redevelopment Authority to engage the public in rethinking our city. It is an annual daylong global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to transform parking spaces into public places.
Located at Sam Leong Road, Reminiscence of the Green is a temporary green intervention that invites residents or public to regain their social well-being with a mahjong game as they take a breather in this economically-challenging times.
Initial Stage We attended a briefing held by the SUTD students about Park(ing) DAy. Afterwards, we went to our site location, Sam Leong Road, and splitted into different teams to be assigned in different areas. Survey was conducted during the entire process. After the collection of surveys and questionaires, we then went on in deciding what we want to do on Park(ing) Day, preented our intial ideas and improve the ideas along the way with the guidance from SUTD students.

Exterior / Facade:
Interior: Chinese chess and mahjong were carried out to also bring back the past activities that are played regularly among the elderly.
Intervention consists of bed frames and real greenery. This was done from the feedback from the survey: Bringing back the presence of greenery from the past of Jalan Besar. We tested out to determine if it could work to our expectations.
Park(ing) Day 2016 was held on 16 September 2016 from 11am to 4pm. We arrived at the location early to set up our temporary green intervention. We started from laying the green carpet to putting the fixtures together and lastly decorating it with real plants. Mahjong and chinese chess game were being set up at the same time.
The intervention invites residents and public to regain their social well-being with a mahjong game as they take a breather in this economically-challenging times. They were also amazed with the activities that were ongoing in the interior and exterior. Some of the residents and shopowners also took their time to engage with us.

08 L.M.W HOUSE
Overview The site location for this project are units 275 and 277 of the shophouses located at Holland Village, facing Holland Road. The L.M.W HOUSE consists of living and working environment for the craft (macrame) and the craftsman. The interior is designed with the idea of interlocking spaces of one volume to another volume (by the means of stairs, hallways, etc). This idea of interlocking helps to connect the living and working environment together instead of separating the two categories.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL
The uniqueness of macrame is that it only requires different knot techniques to make a end product. These knot techniques consists mostly of interlocking patterns. From this interpretation of macrame to interior spaces, conceptual sketches of interlocking and multi-functional spaces were drawn.
